thoughts on sound design and Divinity in ultrakill

#listening to things like #the sounds the virtues and their heavenly beam attacks make #or the hum of gabriel's light weapons #it's not the sound of an angelic choir. it's warbly and distorted and inorganic #almost like a synthesized imitation of more traditionally heavenly sound #and i don't remember if i've talked about it here. but that ties into the mechanical nature of heaven and its heirarchy #reading what the game has to say about gabriel. the wording very Very badly wants you to think of gabriel as a machine #as a weapon #the way the terminal talks about him and the way the council does #it's dehumanizing commodification #and that brings to mind the contrast the game sets up between angels and machines #because angels are counterpart to Robots in ultrakill's story. not demons #the game sets up conflict between Heaven and Earth. with hell just serving as a backdrop #and that shows in the way the game handles angels and machines #where the structure of heaven's forces is rigid and the sound of divinity is a synthetic growl #looking at ultrakill's scripture on machines on the other hand. you'll find that every robot described in the terminal has a story involving #some kind of deviation from originally manufactured purpose. form. design. aesthetic #they're really Wild Animals #they fight. they Live #they evolve and they mutate #they do whatever the hell they need to #and i find that fascinating. perfect contrast #again my fingers are crossed tighter than hell that the Violence layer plays with that animalism #or that machinekind is at least explored further somewhere else in the story #either way. can't wait #no one does hell like hakita #make it this far down i'd love to hear what you think

Thinking about book 5 again cuz i worry some of this is going over people'a heads cuz to me the whole theme is basically "don't suppress your feelings"

I've seen a range of vil defenders, vil mischaracterization, epel hate and epel apologizing;

The reason why most people more readily empathise with epel rather than vil is because we get to see him get upset (and snap first) he is put in a situation of having to do stuff he doesn't really wanna do, and even if the lesson vil is trying to teach him are good and it's just tough love, that doesn't change the fact that it is frustrating and one can only bite down that frustration so much till it boils over. Even the game acknowledged that vil had to change his strategy if he wanted to get his point across. This is why the confrontation between epel and vil is inevitable. Deuce, for all his faults and his own anger issues, gave epel space to get those feelings out, yell at the ocean, and then get back to working hard to show it to vil, because he was not just forced into the group, he made a deal with vil and DOES want follow through and win, even if he has to bear the "cuteness" for it.

Vil... Doesn't really allow himself that. He says "most people grow out of such tantrums by age 4". He couldn't let those bullies from his childhood know they got to him cuz that would mean they won. He can't let it show when it gets to him that neige always beats him cuz the tabloids would eat it up and villainize him. He can't even actually, properly, hate neige, altho he does envy him, because he's just some guy, giving it his best, and he has a more struggling home situation while vil has always had security. Neige even admires vil. These are ugly feelings and how could vil ever allow someone to see him like that? And in full irony, that act that nothing gets to him is one of the reasons why people find him unapproachable. Vil, for all his 'fuck gender roles' glory, was not immune to surpressing his feelings in an unhealthy way.

Vil put Epel under similar duress that he was under and didn't see what was wrong with that cuz he. Kinda just lives like this.

Oh and because rook observes everyone and everything he was able to see both perspectives and advise a way for them to see eye to eye.

#*clenches fist* bill really is just. such a character. #like I think it actually matters a lot that hes not just a force of evil that drives conflict but a Person whose circumstances and choices #made him into the villain of this story. theres so much he has in common with the pines when you look at it but the way he deals with #things and interacts with people around him in ways that go against the themes and virtues of the show is why hes the main antagonist #at the core of it he really is a dark mirror to mabel and ford and stan #and it Makes Sense for him to be more than just an evil for the sake of evil because he is an embodiment of weirdness in a show about #accepting and embracing weirdness #and at the end of the day despite all the horrible shit hes done there is the axolotl willing to reach out a hand to him and give him the #chance to finally grow and leave behind his terrible methods #because at the end of the day hes not done himself any favours. he only isolated himself like ford did and chose to live in idealized #denial like mabel did but unlike them he has not grown and gotten out of it. but he may yet. #im so so normal abt him

In Furman's early IDW Optimus wasn't written as carrying the Matrix because Nova was supposed to have taken it with him to the Dark Universe where it got corrupted. But then McCarthy wanted the Matrix in his story so Nova's anti Matrix was just the vague darkness thing and Optimus had the Matrix this whole time (so Nova didn't have it when he got lost). Then Roberts in Chaos Theory called Nominus a Matrix bearer, had the mysterious Senator do the noncon body mod of a Matrix casing in Orion and established that the Matrix can create life. Later he had Matrix have a map inside left by the Knights. Around the same time Dille and Metzen wrote that Orion found the Matrix by accident when he fell into an underground vault (so Zeta wasn't carrying it). In Shadowplay, Roberts further links Nominus and Sentinel's Primacy to the matrix while also establishing they carried fakes. Some issues later, Robert reveala the Matrix as the source of cold construction in a program started by Nova (so Nova was in possession of the Matrix one way or another) and that it was this that led to the Matrix being replaced with a fake by a guy who felt bad about the whole thing (presumably before Nova left?? Since the spark reserves are referred as Nova's and the guy felt bad over "Nova's heresy"). Barber writes that Nova became the ruler of the planet and named himselr Prime after unifying it after the First Civil War with no mention of the Matrix, but he does write it as an important artifacts for the mythos of the Primes in the colonies. Later Barber confirms that Zeta ruled with a fake Matrix also which was implied by everything else. Then that Solus did put the Matrix in the hilt of Prima's sword (and Nova had been Prima's lieutenant so maybe that's how he got it???). And finally finally we have Roberts reveal that Rung who is Primus who is special but not actually divine is a Matrix making machine and that anyone can tap into the Matrix if they believe in themselves enough.

There are some things I want to say about this but I don't know how.

#something about how originally Optimus would have been Prime not by virtue of the Matrix #and we kinda circled back to that anyway by making the Matrix sort of meaningless and dismantling the whole idea of Primacy #but also mmm at time it feels like Roberts is discrediting the other Primes with the fake Matrix thing so he can have both #the corrupt Primacy and Optimus as a legitimate force of good #but also it was metzen and dille that left the gap and them and jro were never really on the same page #and jro confirmed that Nova had the Matrix at some point so idk #holding the Matrix is held in a positive light at the end of LL but again Nova #not that it matters bc again Barber's story is about how the Primacy was never a good idea
