The Housemaid | Freída McFadden | 3.8⭐️
I have all but abandoned this little blog but I’ve also been in a pretty steep reading slump so can’t exactly post a review if I don’t read lol
That being said! I just bought a Kindle to help me 1. Spend less money on physical books and 2. Get me out of this slump ~hopefully~. So far it’s working since I’ve clearly just finished this book!
I was so into this book, it was definitely enticing and held my attention from start to finish. I don’t like to guess endings because I think it ruins the book and I want to be taken on the ride the author intended so if I ever guess the ending, it means the book was bad. Thankfully that didn’t happen!
I didn’t know the book was in parts or that it was multiple POVs so that was a nice surprise and I was very much falling for all the twists and turns within the book. I will say the ending was a bit too convenient and wrapped it all up with a perfect pretty little bow and the comment his mom makes at the funeral was very obvious which is why my rating was knocked down a bit.
Overall, solid book and I v much enjoyed it👍🏻

Review: The Housemaid
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
“Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own…
Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.
I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.
I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.
But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.
They don’t know what I’m capable of…
Plot:
Millie needs a job otherwise she is back in jail. Landing in jail at 17, Millie is finally free and ready to start a life, but only if she can keep employment. When fired from her waitressing job, Millie found Nina’s ad and thought it was too good to be true. For more money than Millie made waitressing, and a palace to stay in, Nina was looking for a housekeeper to help clean, do some cooking, and sometimes babysit her daughter Cecelia. Hoping Nina does not look at Millie’s record, she was astonished when Nina offered her the job. Nina’s home was grand, with a king-size bed in the master bedroom, and a full dining room, Millie was grateful but a little sketch that her room was a closet in the attic, fitted with a window that did not open, and a lock on the outside of the door. Still grateful for the employment, Millie was shocked to see the state Nina left the house in - dishes everywhere, trash is just thrown near the bin and not a single vegetable in the fridge. Millie works hard to clean up Nina’s mess, but it just seems like Nina is out to make Millie’s life miserable, threatening to fire her for throwing out a PTA note that Nina definitely never wrote. The only bright spot in Millie’s life was Andrew, Nina’s husband. Unlike Nina, Andrew was kind, grateful to Millie, and offered to help her out. Nina after all had no right to this house, as it was Andrew’s before they got married, and one that he could afford since Nina does not work. Millie can tell Andrew is breaking inside from Nina’s torment, and how Millie could be the one to free Andrew from his marriage. But Andrew is not who he seems, nor is Nina, and nor, even, is Millie. When secrets come to light, a price must be paid, one Millie is glad to pay the price for.
Thoughts:
Freida McFadden writes this thriller mystery novel with you trying to decide who is the craziest: Nina, Andrew, or Millie. With the book divided into three parts, we get parts 1 and 3 from the point of view of Millie, with part 2 from Nina talking about the past and how she ended up with Andrew. Millie had this rag-to-riches dream throughout her novel, after noticing how hot Andrew was, she was convinced that she was the girl for him. With almost diary-like entries for her narrative, McFadden really had Millie fall for Andrew with no regard for the others in their relationship. Millie mentioned several times wanting a boyfriend, wanting good sex, so why not do it with the guy who owns the house she is staying in. This ranks up the age rating for this novel, as where the thriller part is cool, McFadden does not hold back with the sex and violence throughout the novel. Millie is a strong character with zero survival skills, despite being locked up in jail for 10 years. You think she would be less trusting of people, especially with Nina acting crazy, and Andrew not acting crazy despite being married to Nina. Nina is an illogical character, who does not make any sense, making you wonder why she is gaslighting Millie throughout the entire part 1. When it comes to part 2, all of Nina’s secrets become revealed, making part 3 all thriller and no mystery. Which was fun, but it also felt like McFadden gave away the mystery of this novel too soon, but also made readers speed read through part 3 for knowing what is going to happen and want to see where it played out. The mystery is not hard to guess, nor is it unique, however, McFadden writes it with such captivating writing, and some dark humor, making you unable to put this novel down. The writing is the real driver of this novel, as at every twist you have no idea how Millie or Nina will react, and the ending gives you the dark statistician you were looking for throughout the novel. Set as the first in the series, this novel can be read stand-alone as the epilogue gives way to what the second novel will be about. Overall, McFadden writes a thrilling tale of Millie the maid in Nina’s crazy household where things are not always what they appear, and Millie must use her wit to stay alive in this crazy house.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS: Do Not Disturb by Freida McFadden
This was not my favorite by Freda but it wasn't my least favorite. I give it an 8/10. It had a good storyline, but some unreliable narration that I hate and the ending was anticlimactic for me. I'm glad I read it but I wouldn't purchase it.

I've discovered a popular thriller writer whose writing actually doesn't annoy me and her name is frieda mcfadden and her books are super fun and easy reads and several times I have either gasped or said "WHAT?" out loud at a reveal. very fun
and there's never been anything sci-fi or fantasy or supernatural seeming in any of her books I have read until now. just good old fashioned People Acting Up
well in this one I'm reading now there's a guy who keeps acting real cagey about letting his girlfriend see him naked and then it's revealed that it's because he has an eye on his back from a vanished twin. and when he goes to the doctor to get it removed they're like "we ran some tests and there's some brain tissue in your back and also we showed the eye some pictures and when we showed it a picture of a little boy whose dog died it started to cry. which shows that your vanished twin is conscious and friendly and we can't ethically destroy him"
and then the book just moves right along with the other plotlines like the med student sleeping with her professor and the spoiled rich kid getting poisoned by his crush. like wait stop go back what was that about the sentient eye on a dude's back

Doc would you put Redwall in your literary Hall of Shame along with such luminaries as Ready Player One and The Time Traveler's Wife?
Oh no, Redwall is bad in a boring way, not an openly insulting way. And it's like... fine. It was Frieda McFadden for eight year olds. Just wouldn't be like, "oh wow!" Even for kids, not to mention reading it as an adult for the first time.

Target has the BOGO 50 percent off on books deal right now, FYI.
I like to buy all my books and then donate them to our local library. It varies how long it takes me to read books (two days? Two months?) and I can be kind of hard on them (I throw them in my bag and carry them everywhere), and I only ever read them once - so I like to buy them (love a good book buying high 🤣) and then donate them to my local library when I am done. Everyone wins that way! It is my anti-social self’s way of contributing to my small town 🤣
I am on a huge Frieda McFadden kick at the moment, so I already have Never Lie and The Teacher in my cart. I am also grabbing A Court of Frost and Starlight and The Fury. I usually avoid male authors, but I do love Alex Michelides.
I figure if my husband gets to go on a week long cruise next month, I am justified in spending a bunch of money on books 🤣

last song I listened to: Confident from the & Juliet soundtrack (I have not seen the show yet but a friend of mine highly recommends it so I listened to the soundtrack first lol not a method of consuming theater that I would recommend)
currently reading: My friends and I have a book club where we're reading all of the Hercule Poirot novels, and we're currently on Lord Edgware Dies, I've been rereading Percy Jackson and the Olympians since the show aired and I'm on Battle of the Labyrinth, and I got Never Lie by Frieda McFadden for Christmas from a friend, so I'm currently in the middle of all of these lol
currently watching: My roommate has introduced me to the One Piece live action on Netflix, another friend has encouraged me to start Schitt's Creek, so those are my two current shows.
currently obsessed with: I am so mentally ill about Baldur's Gate III right now, also my hyperfixation on Percy Jackson has been revived by the show. It's a fun time!
tagging: I'm going to tag the last 9 people from my notifications, no pressure if you don't want to answer! My tumblr circle is so small these days.

last song: "Ava" by Famy, just can't get that one melody out of my head ^^;
currently reading: Nothing atm, just finished The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden. Pretty eh, not too bad but nothing I've never seen before. also, certain elements were NOT foreshadowed very well imo :P
currently watching: uhhh nothing really, i dont really watch stuff that regularly. but i was present/in the room when my sister was watching "In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal" on Netflix, its a docuseries about 4 different korean cults so uh. yeah
current obsession: none currently, coming off of a star wars high as per usual. (in complete honesty, I can feel the dredges of harry potter wanting to sneak up on me so :/ ...pray for me.)

any book recs?
SO MANY OMG ill try to recommend some non-booktok/not mainstream series and books.
ill go by genres:
first my favourite book series in the world and forever my favourite book series is the percy jackson series <333 idc thay its for kids it’s so fun and emotional and entertaining i love it. has my all time favourite fictional couple and fictional character (percy and percabeth)
fantasy:
the cruel prince series (holly black; YA), the political intrigue and character development in this series is so good! also has one of my favourite protagonists and book couple :)
falling kingdoms series (morgan rhodes; YA), again more political intrigue and it is a bit slow at first but the plot picks up. also this has multiple povs!!
lost boy (christina henry; YA/NA?), MADE ME CRY AND IDEK WHY. retelling of peter pan but in captain hooks pov (he used to be one of peters lost boys). finished it in one night
storm and fury (jennifer l. armentrout; YA), probably the only series from her ill read. really like the main character and romance :) did not read the last book tho if im being honest LMAO
poison study series (maria v. snyder; YA ish? leaning towards NA high fantasy), i ADORED the premise of this book and rlly enjoyed the characters, world building and plot. the romance is subtle but is there and it’s all around a really interesting and immersive read.
dystopian:
all these monsters duology (amy tintera; YA), i rlly adore the main characters and the romantic subplot🫶🫶
angelfall series (susan ee), ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED AND FUN DYSTOPIANS !! love the female mc + love the male lead + made me cry + angels = perfect. the romance in this was also so cute
mystery:
malice (keigo higashino; adult) so SO clever and hands down my favourite mystery book. if you like smart, nuanced mysteries that leave you guessing at every turn then this is the one!
the 7 deaths of evelyn hardcastle (stuart turton; adult). this book is my favourite stand-alone of all time and it is so unique, SOOO clever, and so fun. it’s basically a time-loop, clue-style, body-swapping murder mystery that i guarantee you won’t be able to guess the plot twist of.
the word is murder (anthony horowitz; adult), super cool concept that is executed well (in my opinion), enjoyed the narration and the actual mystery! unlikeable deuteragonist tho
the inmate (frieda mcfadden; adult), had me stressed out the entire book🧍🏻‍♀️ also had another plot twist i did NOT see coming at the very very end.
basically anything agatha christie, queen of mystery novels, but mostly: and then there was none, and any hercule poirot novel
contemporary romance:
y’all i don’t rlly like contemporary romance but kulti, the wall of winnipeg is me, wait for it, and lukov with love (all by mariana zapata) are very good!! they are slowburn romances and HEALTHY (!!!!!!!!) relationships.
historical fiction:
veronica speedwell series (deanna raybourn; YA), a badass lepidopterist, a hot grumpy taxidermist, a setting in victorian london, murder mysteries, and BANTER !!!! what else do you need?
stalking jack the ripper series (kerri maniscalco; YA). basically all that above except forensic scientists^^^ this series also has one of my favourite book couples ever and is overall incredibly entertaining and clever.
classics:
the iliad and the odyssey🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶 (homer LMAO)
ANYWAY this was a lot but i hope i helped :) i love romance but mostly as a subplot because i enjoy plot-driven novels more (especially fantasy and mystery). some of these do center a bit on romance tho so if that’s what ur looking for then please feel free to check them out!
