happy birthday barry, hope this one doesn’t give you war flashbacks 🎉
redraw + remix of Flash: Rebirth vol. 4
[ID in alt text + below cut]
Fanart comic of Barry Allen’s birthday, page 1: Barry is rigid in shock as Iris pushes him towards his surprise birthday party. Along the side are panels of each guest wishing him a happy birthday as bloodied flashbacks play behind them of the moments when Eobard Thawne had murdered them.
Page 2: Panel 1 is a close up shot of Barry with a horrified expression, beset by a red background reminiscent of the bloodied flashbacks. He manages to get out the words: “Thanks… everybody….” Panel 2 is Barry walking away from the guests, touching his face in distress. He says, “Sorry. I’m really glad to see everyone… I just… Just gimme a minute….” One of the guests behind him suggests, “Maybe he’s a little shellshocked?” The red background continues to swarm him. Panel 3 is a closeup of Barry’s face as an off-screen voice says, “Hey, buddy….” His fingers slowly slide off his face as he looks up in its direction.
Page 3: Panel 1 reveals Hal Jordan holding a box and wearing a smile. He says, “Looks like I’m right on time.” The red swarm surrounding Barry doesn’t seem to touch Hal. Panel 2 is Hal handing Barry the box, which contains a model plane, as he says, “Happy birthday, Barry.” Barry takes it in his hands with a worn but blank expression. Panel 3 is much the same with Barry unmoving as he’s processing the exchange. Panel 4 is Barry suddenly giving Hal a fond, sarcastic smile as he says, “Great gift, Hal. I especially liked it when I gave it to you for your birthday two years ago.” The red swarm gradually dissipates from each panel, clearing up entirely in the last one.
Page 4: Simplified doodles of Hal and Barry stand in the large, empty space of the page. Hal has one hand in his pocket and the other gesturing in explanation. His expression is embarrassed but good-humored as he says, “Really? You sure? Uh… Haven’t been home in a long time, so….” Barry responds, “Too long… I’m just happy to see you, buddy.” He holds the gift close to himself with an innocent, close-eyed smile. An arrow points to him, reading: Literally snapped out of it to be a little shit. /end ID

Why oh why am I obsessed with the idea of Len meeting Henry in prison and hearing stories about little Barry Allen. Thinking about how terrible it must be to have such a loving father locked up for the murder of his own wife. To have him build respect and a friendship with Henry, maybe even offer him a get-out-of-jail-free card when Len plans to break out. Henry says no, of course, because only guilty men run and he couldn't do that to his son. They part as friends and Len always has Henry Allen aka the best father to ever walk the earth in the back of his mind.
So its like a knife to the gut to hear the name of the boy Henry talked about so proudly fall from Cisco's trembling lips.
He almost killed Doc's son. He almost killed Doc's son.
He let Cisco and his brother go while he tried to figure out his next move. Going up against the Flash was thrilling, intoxicating, everything he had ever dreamed of and more, but knowing sweet little Barry Allen was under the mask had him rethinking everything he knew.
Barry Allen, who took on bullies twice his size for other helpless kids. Who loved dinosaurs and singing with his mom in the car. Who held the key to the only happiness Henry had left. He felt sick. He's heard every story Henry could find the time to tell about this boy, this boy who lost his mother in the worst way possible, who spent every day of his life fighting for his father's freedom.
When Mick and Lisa ask what the plan is, when they demand to know the Flash’s identity, Len froze. Stuck between being another heartless villain in an innocent kid's life or being a silent hero and keeping the Doc's kid safe from the likes of himself and his family.
In the end, it's the start of his undoing. Choosing the role of silent hero in that moment, keeping Barry safe and alive, agreeing to their deal, playing his part all while making sure nothing happened to this broken boy.
When his chance to be a real hero comes along, he doesn't go see Barry or Lisa. He headed to a little cabin in the middle of nowhere and knocked on the door with a bottle of scotch in one hand.
Henry looked different on the outside, his face lighter, tanner. The prison jumpsuit Len had become familiar with was replaced by loose jeans and a flannel shirt.
"Long time no see Doc, mind if I come in?" Len offered out the bottle, stepping over the threshold when Henry accepted it with a small nod.
"As long as you leave any weapons at the door, you'll always be welcome here, Leonard."
"Even after I shot your son?" Len questioned, tilting his head when Henry let out a deep sigh at his words.
"So you do know." Henry muttered, setting the bottle down on the kitchen table and pushing a chair out for Len to have a seat before he headed to the cabinet for two glasses.
"He didn't tell you?" Len asked as he took a seat at the small wooden table pushed against the kitchen wall.
"There's a lot of things my son doesn't tell me about his other job, for my own protection." Henry said as he joined him at the table, pouring them each a generous portion of the scotch.
"That why you moved all the way out here? All you ever talked about was getting to spend time with your son again, Doc. Why aren't you?" Len palmed his glass as he awaited Henry's answer, sliding a finger over the smooth surface of the rim. Henry took a slow drink, his eyes growing sad and distant as he stared down into the honey-colored liquor.
"Barry has a life, a great life that he does a lot of good in. I don't really think I fit into that life."
"Maybe not this time around, but what if I told you I could change that?"
Henry looked up at Len's cryptic words, searching eyes dancing and a thoughtful frown pulling on his mouth.
"Why are you here, Leonard?"
"I've been offered an exciting opportunity, one where I can make some real changes in the world." If he played his cards right he could change things to play in both of their favors. "I believe you and I deserve more than the hand we were dealt. I think Barry deserves to have his father in his life, I think I deserve not to."
"Leonard, why are you here?" Henry asked again.
"To say goodbye." Len paused, thinking about why exactly he was sitting here. "To thank you, I guess."
"For what?"
"Too much, so let's just keep it at a thank you."
"Leonard-"
"I'll see you around Doc, take care of yourself." Len knocked his knuckles against the surface of the table as he stood, heading towards the door with Henry following close at his heels.
"Leonard, what are you going to do?"
Len is already at the door, one hand on the doorknob and a secretive smirk dancing on his lips.
"Nothing you need to worry about Doc, and if you see your son, tell him...tell him I'm taking his advice."
"Advise about what?"
Len pulled the door open, casting a small, hopeful smile back at his old friend.
"See you in the next life, Henry."

I still think The Flash CW (2014-2023) TV show did us a massive disservice by killing off Barry's father Henry. Like, He had more screen time IN prison than he did OUT of prison. He had his welcome home from prison party, And after YEARS, Was finally able to be with his son and just fucking noped out to go live by himself in the woods and fish??? What??? Your SON is right there! DO YOU NOT WANT HIM??? THE FUCK, OLD MAN? And then we see him like...TWO times, All alone in his cabin, Giving advice to Barry and then he DIES??? WHAT? EXCUSE YOU??
Anywho, That show became shit during like the 4th or 5th season and I fucking hate it now I but still have to finish it bc I have to know how it ends. What I would GIVE for Henry to have stayed alive and met the speed force taking Nora's form. I would literally kill for that.

These actors all apeared in the original 90's Flash series and returned to be a part of the CW series. If you didn't have prior knowledge of these actors former roles within The Flash, which were you most surprised to learn about?

you know I really like that in The Flash CW show we get so many good dads (flawed, yes, but ultimately good) who NOT ONLY are good but are allowed to have and show emotions and cry and say I love you
Joe, Henry, Harry, Barry - I feel like we usually end up with absent or absolutely awful fathers in these kinds of shows, it's just refreshing

An Honest Thief
Chapter 3: My Favorite Liar
Iris West/Leonard Snart
Read on AO3 here
Summary:
With or without Snart, Iris is going to finish her investigation into STAR Labs. And she's getting closer to the whole truth. But is she about to draw the attention of someone truly dangerous?
Notes:
And Iris gets the 'aro Iris West' tag.
Snippet:
Henry sits back with a father’s knowing smile. “What trouble has that boy got into now?”
“That’s a good question.” It’s hard to read someone’s expression with a six-inch-thick grubby glass screen in the way. “Henry, do you know much about STAR Labs?”
The slightest flicker of… something… passes across Henry’s face. Then it’s gone. “Only as much as you do. Their research into the effects of lightning strikes is the reason Barry woke up. Now he’s helping them with it, as a thank you.” He gives her a guarded smile. “What’s this about?”
By now, Iris knows how much of the truth she can tell, and how much she has to keep close to her chest. “I’m just doing some research for a story about the particle accelerator accident. I think it might have created metahumans. But I don’t know if I’m going to end up with enough to publish, so keep that under your hat, okay?”
Henry Allen is a very honest man. It’s one of the reasons Iris has always believed Barry’s story about the man in the lightning who killed Nora. His son is a pretty good liar, after years of practice, but Henry is not. Iris is sure she’d have known if he wasn’t telling the truth about that night.
At her mention of the particle accelerator and metahumans, Henry winces.
He’s lying.
But then, isn’t everyone?
Iris doesn’t give him a chance to deny that Barry is the Flash. She’s got more interesting questions for him. “Does Barry ever talk to you about Harrison Wells?”
“The scientist at STAR Labs?” This time, Henry’s confusion looks genuine. “Barry’s mentioned him once or twice. Why?”
Well, at least Iris knows something that—
A stray thought from a moment ago replays itself in her head. “There was a man in the lightning,” she murmurs.
Henry taps the phone receiver. “Sorry, Iris. I didn’t get that.”
“Oh, nothing.” Iris unclips her purse from below the counter. “Thanks, Henry - that was really helpful! I’ll let you know when the article is out. I’ll even bring you a signed copy.”
“That’d be nice,” he says, bewildered, and Iris scuttles away. She’s a terrible person, but it’s better than lying to him.
There’s another speedster. Or there was. That could nix Snart’s theory about the particle accelerator and metahumans - the timing is all wrong - but Iris is getting used to the way every answer brings a dozen more questions with it.
At least now she knows what she’s looking for.
The Man in Yellow.

Re-watched "Call Me By Your Name" and now I can't stop thinking about Barry living as Elliot.
No tragedy, no deaths, just loving parents and a happy childhood.
Henry is a famous and wealthy doctor, Nora is a professional writer who gardens for the soul. Summer and holidays at the cottage in Italy. All day Barry swims and sunbathes, reads books while lying in a hammock, and eats peaches straight from the trees. Henry works in his office when it's unbearably hot outside, and Nora writes her new novel right by the pool without fear of damaging the manuscript.
In the evenings they lie on the couch. Nora leans back against her husband's chest and reads books aloud. She strokes Barry's head in her lap, and Henry turns the pages for her.
They have dinner parties where they invite all the family friends. Henry plays piano for the guests, and Barry and Nora sing a duet. Then Barry and Iris run off before anyone suggests playing charades, steal a bottle of wine from the table, and get high in the attic, sharing gossip and secrets with each other.
When Nora takes offense at Barry or Henry, they know what song to turn on the old record player to make her forgive them. Nora and Henry always start dancing and Barry watches them with a smile.
When Barry is worried about something, he gathers his parents in the living room and tells them everything. Henry gives advice, Nora is supportive.
Barry and Nora smoke in the garden in secret from Henry, discussing the latest news. When he catches them doing this, he douses them with water from the garden hose, wailing about the evils of smoking. However, no one gave up the bad habit.
Barry deserves it so much, I'm crying.
