A Pile Of Canon Divergent Danganronpa Headcanons:

The students absolutely did not get along when they first enrolled, they were all legit getting on each others' nerves and every other day was a shouting match.

Byakuya doesn't mind Ultimate Impostor's presence most of the time, but there have been times when he was seriously creeped out by Impostor.

After they adopted Kotoko, Hifumi collected all his loli/shotacon and invited Kotoko to help him burn it. Seeing the damage adults did to Kotoko has him rethinking his tastes in manga altogether.

If Kiyotaka catches anyone running in the halls he will drag them to that person's starting point and make them walk back to their destination.

When Gonta inevitably found out that Hiyoko liked squishing ants, he sat her in front of the biggest anthill he could find and unloaded ant facts on her. This bored the habit right out of Hiyoko.

Everyone has accidentally locked themselves out of the school at least once.

Over time, everyone noticed that Mikan was tripping over less and less. Though she attributes it to learning balance from Sakura, she subconsciously knows it's because she doesn't need the attention anymore.

Mikan wants to cure Nagito's terminal illnesses, but fears that Nagito's luck would kill him if she does so.

Mikan cares deeply for the Warriors of Hope, and is a key player in their rehabilitation.

The virtual Jabberwock Island from Danganronpa S is still there...but the students actually built it to get away from their oppressive dickhead superiors that they hate. It has the 50 day summer camp mode for all of them, or a solo mode for anyone to set a specific amount of time within the virtual world to unwind.

Kirumi cracks pretty easy under stress. She doesn't lash out at everyone so much as she curls up against the nearest wall and rocks herself.

Don't ask Kirumi to reenact Jackass with you, or she will absolutely overcomplicate the assignment and seriously injure herself. She does not comprehend physical comedy, much less the line where physical comedy becomes everyone around her fearing for her life.

Ryota straight up lives in the walls along with the balding Monokuma from V3. Junko and Ultimate Impostor are the only ones who know, but neither of them have been successful at getting Ryota out of his shell.

Korekiyo has been given an intervention by all the girls at Hope's Peak. It ended with eight hours of group hugging. Korekiyo is feeling better now.

Korekiyo and Kirumi have routinely fought over the air conditioning.

Masaru will bite anyone at least once, but for reasons only known to himself, he likes biting clowns the most. He will hunt down any clown that appears in his field of vision and not stop until he gets a bite.

If Gonta finds any insect traps or insecticides, he throws them down the garbage chute.

Hajime is still Izuru, but it's an open secret. His classmates love him no matter what his identity is. <3

Reserve Course students weren't so chill about Izuru, however-they wanted Jin Kirigiri's BLOOD. And the Ultimates just kinda let them do it for treating their friend as a lab rat.

One winter when the heater broke everyone slept together in the gym until it was fixed. We're talking a pile of blankets that was three feet thick.

They legit would not trade each other for the world except for Kokichi and even then Suichi would still be sad about it

Mahiru doesn't like taking pictures of Ryoma because his weirdly large eyes reflect all the light and the result always looks terrifying.

Someone kept leaving a stuffed toy clown in random places around the school...until they adopted Masaru and he promptly bit the shit out of it.

Ibuki tried playing from the rooftop once. It took 8 hours to find her, 4 hours to coax her down, and 2 hours to soothe her afterwards.

Nanokumas like to move things around when nobody's looking.

All Ultimates are prone to getting the zoomies. It ranges from Leon running around in circles to Sakura almost leveling the school.

Reserve Course students like to observe the Ultimates because Ultimates are all stupid fucking dorks and watching them accidentally stir up chaos is great entertainment.

Hope Fragments appear when a student feels their happiest. It forms within the body and gets hacked up like a hairball.

Gonta routinely has nightmares about being caught in a venus flytrap.

Fuyuhiko has become aware of Yasuhiro's debt to his family, and holds it over his head.

Peko wonders if her parents know about her becoming an Ultimate.

Junko is trying really, really hard to feign apathy towards her classmates in the name of Despair, but no one buys it.

Mukuro and Peko like to spar together, and they're pretty evenly matched.

Miu is soft (by Miu standards) towards Chihiro.

Miu becomes very anxious and needy at the mere thought of graduating from Hope's Peak and moving away from her friends.

im thinking so loudly about ibuki and fuyuhikos friendship. i think i will explode

i dont see it ever really talked about honestly, they had so much potential together as a duo. even after everything fuyuhiko had done, he genuinely showed remorse for everything (by the whole slitting his abdomen open especially) and ibuki knew that, she understood it, so she went as far as to throw him a whole party for his recovery because she cares, she believes he can be a better person bc she is STUPIDLY optimistic about everything. fuyu must've thought he didnt deserve all that kindness

iirc, i even think at some point in dialogue, ibuki says to hajime she was gonna go find fuyuhiko to bug him, and GOD i love the thought of that. fuyuhiko just going off alone often thinking about shit (you know, The Horrors) cause its not like he had anyone— but then ibuki finds him and follows him around because she doesn't want him to be alone.

i think theyd slowly become really good friends just unfortunately off screen. i think ibuki would personally and deeply understand his kind of feeling of loneliness and not really fitting in/being normal, though it may be in different ways, ibuki must've had a tough life as well, so she would cheer him up about it. theyre both a little fucked up and silly, its what ties their bond

and dude you cannot tell me fuyuhiko didn't try to help the others while they were sick during ch3, but most notably ibuki in this case. she had done so much for him with the party, he wanted to return the favor, he wanted to keep her safe especially with how she was wandering out her room

but his efforts failed in the end. when she died, that mustve fucked him up so badly. like. for a while

he'd lost peko and natsumi, everyone hated him, but he didn't let it stop him from trying to be better. but now, he lost ibuki, just when they were getting close (AND hiyoko, who he was trying to make up with, AND mikan which hurt him too bc i think he cared deeply for her too and tried to help her overall during the disease ordeal to give back as well, but thats a whole other post), its like everyone was being taken away from him right at his feet. i feel like he'd just try to avoid people permanently from that point on. (which didnt work obvi bc akane and hajime flicked his forehead and said Hey Bitch I Love You) but anyway. god. it was too early for those three to go dammit

god i want more of ibuki and fuyuhiko i eat it up sm. their friendship is everything to me. i think ibuki would stick around with him in the restaurant at breakfast, and they'd run around the islands (fuyu would be as slow as a snail bc he's still healing lol), fuyuhiko would put up ibukis hair for her, and theyd perhaps even spend some time in the music venue just jammin to the same rock music.. god. just let them be together

just some v3 post-ch3 thoughts

i really do not mean to Start Shit by saying this, because i love Shuichi and Maki too, but Shuichi is like, so mean to Miu in a way he isn't to Maki. they're both Weird to him, and both just as useful (Miu is consistently right very early on, but no one listens to her), yet i guess because Miu is more vulgar...? i dunno.

overall actually it's odd to me that Shoo2 and Kaito bend over backwards for Maki, who as far as they know could be a danger, and not Miu, who IMO isn't and is just a larger Hiyoko.

i don't really blame the boys for this, though. i think on a meta narrative level it's because Miu is an OP game-breaker and if she loved and trusted everyone, or even a small Poo-dent Council of Slaves, she could just invent them all out of a ton of Situations. (look at Kaede: she wins over Miu immediately for something EXTREMELY helpful.)

it wasn't enough to write Miu as very paranoid, because Maki's closed-off, too. wasn't enough to make her shit on everyone, either, because Maki is quite cold to Kaito and Shuichi. i imagine it was probably easier for Kodaka and co to just write Shoo (and Kaito, and many others) as Inexplicably Dismissive of Miu. at least Shoo is concerned in the FTs when she's trying to Hurt Herself, though he has other kind-of mean thoughts i'm not a fan of

again: no hate on any of these characters, i love them. i think i'm just Biased and wish someone had gone "hey, if we're kind of attentive to Miu, she eases up a little and maybe we can Use Her Skills for stuff"

what if Gundham was hit with the Despair Disease? and his disease was the Remembering Disease and remembers everything that happened before, from the world-ending tragedy, to remembering his true beloved (Kazuichi)

Actually, aside from the Despair Disease, that’s actually the concept I had for A Remnant Trace, Nevermore (TW VERY dark themes in the story, please be advised) but I do love the idea of Gundham or Kazuichi having the Despair Disease! This time, lets make it a lot less dark and a bit more sad 😈

First, Mikan would either need a new disease, getting the common cold so she’s stuck in quarantine with the others, or just not have a disease all together. Either way, with her not getting it, Gundham contracts the Remebering Disease, being one of the first to contract DD. And for funnies, let switch up the sick too - replace Hiyoko with Ibuki and Hajime with Nagito. So those with the disease are: Hiyoko, Akane and Hajime, with Fuyuhiko thrown in cause with not 😂

Hiyoko has same Disease Ibuki had, Akane’s stays the same, Hajime has the Lying Disease and Fuyuhiko has a brand new disease! I’m calling it the Damsel Disease! He feels compelled to be in situations where he’ll always be saved; no matter how dangerous or convoluted to the point it was obviously planned, he must be rescued.

So it’s only Nagito, Sonia, Chiaki, Ibuki, Nekomaru, Kazuichi and Mikan the only healthy ones. Gundham, with the Remembering Disease, happens on Day 2 and he hides it extremely well! Since he’s a theater kid and a goth, of course he has shit tons of makeup and foundation! That pale pallor isn’t completely natural after all. And since his body usually runs colder than the average human (this man is anemic send help), his fever isn’t completely obvious. When he awakes on the Motives Second Day with all their memories of Hope’s Peak, he immediately goes in search of Kazuichi.

He’s so overwhelmed by the memories, that it his Devas an embarrassingly long time to get him back to virtual reality. It doesn’t take him long to come to the obvious conclusion that he won’t be believed and called mentally unstable at best, or believed and cause unnecessary chaos and ensuring Junko’s victory at worse. He has to walk to very fine line, but his need to be close to Kazuichi now that he knows what they meant to each other means he has to play this cool.

Sadly, Gundham can’t really play cool. He almost completely ruins it during breakfast when he automatically seeks and sits at Kazuichi’s table. The mechanic is suspicious and butthurt since the day before they finally came to a head about The Sonia Situation ™️ and Ibuki is trying to cheer him up now that both his bros and big sis are sick. He thought the breeder was coming over to rub the whole situation in his face, but feels shame because he somehow knows the other would never do that. How even knows that, he can’t say but it feels right.

And so the two are just staring at Gundham, wondering what he’s doing siting with them and Gundham is starting to sweat bullets because how can he explain this behavior that’ll sound believable. He’s saved from his massive faux pas when Chiaki and Sonia join them, announcing they’ve decided to become a couple before this disease gets to them. And yeah, it hurts Kazuichi a bit, but he’s genuinely happy for Chiaki. And he apologizes to both Sonia and Gundham, which is met with very little fanfare from the former and acceptance for his apology from the later.

When they split up for the day, Gundham almost steps in it again when he instinctively heads out with Kazuichi. But he covers it by stating that he knew the mechanic was making some sort of communication device and will guard against any nefarious actions. And while he’s a little freaked out about the sudden shift in behavior, Kazuichi tries to shrug it off and reluctantly lets the other follow him around. But he’s super anxious because he thinks he’s going to get killed by the breeder because why else would he start following him around?

Meanwhile, Gundham is fighting inner turmoil: Watching Kazuichi work again brings nostalgic energy flowing through the goth. He remembers the long hours of them just each other’s company - Kazuichi working on some project or another while talking to Gundham about plans for dates or friend outings. It makes him long for the other to smile at him; to excitedly present a mini toy car he made just for his Dark Devas to traverse the realm without their Overlord’s assistance. He wants that intimacy again and he finds himself asking stilted questions.

At first, he tries to make it seem as though he’s ensuring Kazuichi is doing exactly what he told them, to then being curious to the steps and parts. Kazuichi, not really being used to people outside of other mechanics being interested in this kind of stuff, is immediately suspicious again - to the point he blurts out he knows the breeder is going to try and kill him. He immediately feels bad when Gundham looks genuinely distraught over the assumption but doesn’t back down, pointing out how just the other day the goth proclaimed he’d rather die than be Kazuichi’s presence willingly.

Now Gundham is faced with an impossible hurdle: does he confess what he knows and be seen a mad prophet fallen by illness as tragic as Delphi? Not mention being confined and unable to protect those he cares for from this accursed world. Or he says nothing, making the other believe the worst of him and create a bigger rift between him and his Sun?

He is saved once again by the universe, when a sick Fuyuhiko runs past, somehow escaping from the hospital. Kazuichi runs after him, determined to keep his friend from harm and the breeder follows. They find Fuyuhiko trying desperately to climb up the motel stairs in hopes of jumping off the highest floor. At one point, Kazuichi almost had him, but the blond eludes him and makes it to the top and does a running leap into the air. Kazuichi screams, tears streaming down his face and Fuyuhiko is caught by Gundham who was still on the ground.

A sick Fuyuhiko is profusely thanking the breeder as the others come onto the scene. They get the blond off the goth and Sonia and Mikan manhandles him back to the hospital. Fuyuhiko makes an off handed comment about Gundham being much warmer than he thought, but it’s dismissed. Kazuichi waits until, the girls are gone to berate the other boy about doing something so stupid. But he does thank him for saving his sick friend and apologizes for assuming he’d try to kill him. Kazuichi figures that, if he wanted, he could’ve let the yakuza heir die and push Kazuichi over the railing too.

Gundham wonders if fate is being fickle or cruel, but he’ll take it. He uses this as a way to get the mechanic to get to spend with him - which he does after finishing the two way communication devices and making sure it was set up. They both find an easy camaraderie, with Gundham using his memories to his advantage and making the other more comfortable with him. What he didn’t know, though, was that Kazuichi kinda found him attractive already but he was trying to make the attraction focus on Sonia which failed lol. So he’s actually more open to the breeder now that she’s not available and they aren’t playing rivals.

They hang out all day and when the night time announcement comes on, they’re a little surprised that it was that late. When they part for the night, Gundham makes sure Kazuichi enters his hotel room safely before going around and ensuring everyone was accounted for inside before going in.

The next day, better progress. Ibuki is a little down because Mikan is spending more time at the hospital, but it’s only a minor thing. She understands why. Kazuichi is more welcoming to him at breakfast than yesterday and they both stick together after they’re recruited forcibly dragged over to help with their sick friends. At some point, they get separated and Gundham is confronted by one of the others (Hajime maybe) and they corner him and basically tell him they know he’s sick and want in on his obvious plan to murder Kazuichi.

Disgusted, Gundham leave them, but he can’t help now noticed how Kazuichi is still a little weary towards him. Little does he know that after Gundham stormed off, they encounter Kazuichi and basically said the same thing, but added how the other seemed to be recruiting people. Kazuichi thinks it’s bullshit, but he can’t help the space he puts between them afterwards.

Gundham comsiders telling Kazuichi the truth, the he remembers everything, but can’t find the right time to do so. Something always comes up and if he’s honest, he kinda likes being the only one with vital information. He knows their tells and can keep them a lot more safe. Also, a little part of him uses his regained knowledge to win back Kazuichi. It’s immoral he knows, but he doesn’t completely see it as wrong when the mechanic genuinely smiles up at him, or holds his hand for a millisecond when he’s excited, or calls him that ridiculous nickname “Gummy Bear”.

It’s selfish he knows, but he feels entitled to the selfishness. Even though as a Remnant he has done many unspeakable acts, does that mean he doesn’t deserve this little slice of heaven when it presents itself?

So he continues to stay silent, being vigilant while also drawing out the mechanic’s hidden attraction for him. And for a split moment, he lets himself forget what was happening around them. Why he was able to remember….

The announcement blaring throughout the island shocks him as does the knowledge of a double murder occurring seemingly the same time. Ibuki and Hiyoko, both slain in the Titty Typhoon. And Mikan had done it. It comes to light during the trial, that Mikan never meant to kill Ibuki - she had in fact was developing a crush on the musician. But Ibuki overstepped; did something that triggered the nurse’s past trauma and when she came to, Ibuki was dead. Hiyoko had witnessed it, but since she had the Obedience Disease, Mikan easily made her kill herself.

Now they were down three friends and Gundham feels immense guilt because he thinks he could’ve prevented all of this by being honest. And Kazuichi and Sonia assume that their unfortunate situation has finally made the breeder crack under pressure and they try to reassure him. He still keeps his secret to himself, even after the fever is gone he still retains the memories, but only very vivid and specific ones. He still tries to use them to keep them all safe.

god the idea of all of class 77 just having this weird special bond with eachother is so special to me 😭😭 i do wonder, though- given all of them are dealing with a LOT, and recovery isn't pretty, do you think fights/kind of lashing out would ever happen? if so, with who, and how do you think the group would handle that kind of stuff?

Oh for SUUUURE I dont go into it as much, because I too love people being special to each other and the sweetness of it, but these are messy people in uniquely messy situation so for sure they're gonna clash

Like, no WAY Sonia and Souda don't have a huge blowout at some point, maybe before anyone starts waking up even. Sonia deserves to have a moment where she just fuckin yells at him and lets it all out and makes him take her seriously enough to apologize and think about himself, and then they can continue being their own weird brand of friends.

Fuyuhiko still has anger issues, even though he's trying hard to be a kinder person, so he's definitely gonna have moments of snapping at people. I think he's a little too cowed to be arguing with Mahiru, but I could see him having it out with Hiyoko once or twice. I also think things might be a bit tense between him and Peko while Peko adapts to their new non-indentured friendship.

And yeah Hiyoko still has a major attitude problem and tbh, TBH, I think she deserves to get a little smack of "Not Acceptable" consequences. I think she might have a fight at Fuyuhiko, and OOF... Mikan. I think those two just need to be kept away from each other for a while after waking up, possibly the closest thing the group gets to repeating the murder part of the game. Mahiru employed to keep an eye on Hiyoko and Hajime keeping an eye on Mikan, shit probably gets real tense.

I think Impostor is... not NOT mad at Teru, but calm about it, so there's no huge fight, just cold shoulders and awkwardness.

And then there's Nagito. Yknow. Hes a whole topic in himself, I'd imagine Teru doesn't feel super warm towards him and there's the really bad tension between him and Hajime too. Hajime *would* sort of be keeping an eye on him, but. That's not good for Hajime's own psyche, so he is forcibly replaced by various others.

That's just already-established grievances. However, based on just. Unfortunate clashing;

Fuyuhiko has anger issues, Souda has some history of abuse. They probably need to find a balance there, where Souda never actually feels unsafe and Fuyuhiko manages to let out steam without being taken too seriously. He also might clash with and need to watch himself around Mahiru and Mikan.

TeruTeru gets sat the FUCK down and told that if he crosses people's boundaries, there will be Consequences. ESPECIALLY if he tries any shit with Akane or Mikan.

Hiyoko does not get to be Like That with Mikan anymore. She tries, just as a first reaction (her attitude is probably a defense mechanism and she does feel unsafe around Mikan), but it's not allowed to go as far as it used to. Not with anyone else either. Also Mikan probably needs to keep a distance herself.

I've talked about Mikan on her own before and the potential of her being s more complex case than the rest, on account that she might remember her entire time with Junko and not just gradual bits of it. If so, I made / am making the little Eye Yoink comic bits, which would probably be the most serious conflict. I'd just imagine that she's kind of .. generally unstable, and shouldn't be left alone with anyone too long. I kind of like the idea that she like.... well if she's the only one who fully remembers what things were like in school, that's already very alienating, and she might try to intentionally trigger other people's memories (maybe not even out of malice, just desperation and wanting someone else to Get It). But that might be a big problem for people who are just not ready to remember all that stuff. People who are already a bit grey on the moral spectrum (Fuyuhiko, Hiyoko, Peko) and people who have a hard time dealing with who they used to be (Nekomaru, Gundham, Sonia... kind of everyone tbh but some are better at compartmentalizing).

FSR I've just decided that Gundham is in a physically bad condition when he wakes up, and ofc Akane. That would probably be a bit rough to deal with, two people who base a lot of their self-worth on being strong (very different ideas of strength though). That's more of an internal struggle that might have some collateral damage but still. I can see them getting frustrated and lashing out at people like Nekomaru and Ibuki, who have obvious and abundant energy and are more okay with their unfamiliar bodies.

Ryota is just generally Anxious around absolutely everyone. Thankfully Impostor is very protective of him and takes good care of him, and people like Ibuki and Akane are quick to sort of forcefully adopt him, but I'll bet there's moments where he just locks himself in his room for a couple of days because Fuyuhiko yelled at him or Hiyoko called him a smelly shrimp boy or Gundham cursed him or something.

Nagito needs to curb The Way He Talks about stuff, at least a little, because it tends to send people dangerously close to to a bad place. He only wants what's best for everyone!...kinda? But he tends to just give off the opposite energy. Also boy needs to learn some self worth. So for his sake and everyone else's, he needs some mental assistance, but the person most qualified for that is the person that he clashed with the very most. I dont know what the solution to that is lol its probably an ongoing conflict

The good thing is, there's many of them! So I think whenever there is a big fight or a lot of conflict, someone can always step up for both parties and help keep the peace, without disrupting their routine too much. No one ever needs to be left out, at least.

Not the Pekoshima anon who originally talked about the ship, but I am so Invested in pekoshima my god, I have to talk about it. Okay so - with both Ultimate Despair's we see (discounting DR3 because. I don't like it), Nagito and Mikan, I find them very interesting. Mikan in chapter 3 obviously isn't behaving well - murder and all - but she also seems to recognize for possibly the first time ever that how people treated her was wrong (questioning why they treated her this way, acknowledging it wasn't fair, even calling the cast a bunch of bullies in scorn). Which is... such interesting characterization! It's one of the reasons I can't exactly buy how Junkan is presented in DR3 - in her FTEs, how people treated Mikan was normal to her, and she didn't seem to fully realize it was wrong. In the third trial, Mikan talks as if she knows how she was treated was wrong, and singles out Junko as being different, having forgiven her. In her final FTE, she says that Hajime has forgiven her too, implying to me that Junko did the same thing as Hajime did during their FTEs together, just with malicious intent (strengthening the Hajime/Izuru and Ryouko/Junko parallels and solitifying both Chiaki and Hajime in SDR2 as "the kindness the remnants never had" - kindness that ultimately leads to them triumphing over Junko this time). So in DR3, it didn't make much sense to me that Junko treated Mikan just as everyone else in Mikan's life has. Kicking her and berating her. Of course, with brainwashing she didn't need to be kind, but before DR3 came out, I always thought Junko operated more like... she would make you go one step forward, and two steps back. She would present herself as if solving your problems and helping you, but that was just to her own ends. We see this in Nagito too - when he's in DR:AE as a remnant of despair, his ideals have changed drastically from SDR2, and I'd go so far as to say what he preaches in DR:AE to be a better philosophy - though how far he's willing to go for it, still bad. So, the conclusion I reached was that every remnant would have some sort of ironic twist - something they improved upon, only for their other behaviors to be worse, like Nagito and Mikan.

So Hiyoko wouldn't be bully - but maybe it would be too much in the other direction, where she was obedient to a fault. Never talking without permission, sitting still like a doll, only doing what she was told.

Kaizuchi, perhaps, would no longer be obsessed with Sonia, someone who didn't like him back, and instead fixate on Junko, who welcomed his obsession...

And Peko, who used to think she was a tool... perhaps she would finally realize she was human. Perhaps she would realize this, and despair at such a fact.

Because it would mean she failed. She failed to become a tool for Fuyuhiko, and suddenly everything done to her wasn't "training a tool" but a tragedy. Her life was a tragedy. The very fact that she is human is despair, but that despair itself proves she is human. I imagine she could get very twisty and turny in her thoughts about this.

I also have the headcanon that Peko and Fuyuhiko during the despair times switches roles. Fuyuhiko always took on too much responsibility, and hey, here's your old pal Junko here to set you straight! You don't need to take so much onto yourself! It's painful, isn't it? Taking the burden of making choices. Being human. Who wants that responsibility? Why not give it to someone else? Oh hey, look at that, it's your old pal Peko! She'll take the brunt of responsibility from now on! From now on, Peko is the master and Fuyuhiko is the tool!

I just love the idea of Junko doing these ironic little twists. Helping them in some way only to fuck them over in others. Junko makes Peko realize she's human, and because of that, Peko cannot help but both love and resent her. Real toxic yuri shit going on.

This is a really good take on Junko's strategy!! My Junko analysis is similar but not quite the same. I've always viewed Junko as a monkey's paw. Whoever you are, she gives you exactly what you want, in its totality - but at the expense of your happiness.

Mikan's desire for someone to care for her becomes excessive dependency and blind devotion. Ryota's desire to become a successful animator who doesn't have to think about talking to others or existing in the real world becomes the complete destruction of that world, and his animated work as the most influential to ever exist. Nagito's desire to become a force which others can step on to find hope becomes Nagito ensuring the legacy of the greatest despair he possibly can, so that no 'fake' hopes can bypass his rigorous test - only a True Ultimate Hope can overcome and finally lead the world to victory.

Despair - for Junko - is the knowledge that you have succeeded, and everything is even worse than if you hadn't. Because Junko is Always succeeding, and she's Always in despair. Nothing challenges her. The only thing that she can't predict is pure dumb luck, which Makoto leverages against her both in THH and SDR2 to enable her defeat. Junko, like Izuru, is one of the most successful people to ever exist, and it SUCKS. So of course she is dragging people down the exact same way she herself is dragged down. Of course she shows people obvious, glowing success, in such a way that it tears down the entire world they once knew. Because this way - if one day unimaginably, they break their bonds - they will never, ever experience true hope again. Because their hopes are what destroyed them. Their hope brings about despair.

So from that perspective, I think you're dead on the money with Fuyuhiko, who loathes his position and wants to be free of the burden of responsibility (wouldn't it be easier, to be a tool, too? Aren't you tired of telling people to die? Shouldn't you take responsibility yourself, if there's killing to be done?). But Peko's desire is to be a tool. Rather than teaching Peko how to become her own person, I personally think that Junko would put Peko through the paces of both physical and psychological torture to turn her into a complete unfeeling instrument, exactly like Peko wanted. Once you've been in a 1-foot cell with no other people for a week, once you've been given Pavlovian training to receive an endorphin rush when holding your own spilling viscera in your hands - affection, agency, memory all fade away. There's just the next order. Exactly like Peko wanted.

I'm still on the fence, but my current draft is that she is *very* jealous, but her kill in 4 isn't mostly motivated by jealousy. It's mostly because she doesn't want the closest friends she's ever had (Ibuki, Kazuichi, and Mikan) to die (tho because of who I am, Kazuichi is a lot more than just a friend to her) but the fact she kills Sonia in particular is not something she's actually sad about.

She is *very* jealous of her. Like in canon, she hates her for being everything she isn't: well-liked, tall, mature-looking, everything. So killing Sonia while messed up isn't something she'll be too sad about in the trial. She will say in the trial that she was jealous and plays up her antisocial qualities because she doesn't want anyone else to cry over her, so she'll act more like a little shit and repeat the line she says in canon where "murder is unacceptable no matter what" but the rest of the cast see through her bluster eventually.

So the motive is genuinely to help her friends but there's also a little fucked up part of her that killed her just sort of for herself and her own satisfaction.

Same anon here who brought up that stuff about Nagito's contempt for the Reserve Course being intensified in the simulation by misinformation. For a number of reasons I'm much more accepting of the premise of literal brainwashing than other fans. In fact, controversial opinion, I actually think it is a more logical and coherent premise than the idea of Class 77-B all becoming terrorists of their own free will.

Now just to be clear I do agree that the idea of insta-brainwashing via a Despair video that Junko had all along is daft. Since on top of it being kind of anticlimactic, it retroactively means she was sitting on an "I win" button the entire time in DR1. But to summarize why I don't think the idea of literal brainwashing is an unreasonable premise, it mainly comes to three points.

The first is that the precedent for brainwashing technology had already been set in the DR universe. DR1 established that it was possible to precisely erase targeted memories. DR0 took that to the next extreme by showing it was possible to create a new persona through that same technology. UDG established that helmets to mind control victims existed too. So the idea of Class 77-B also being brainwashed is far from outlandish in the setting. In fact I accidentally predicted the V3 twist before reaching the end. Since I initially assumed they would have gone through a more visceral version of what was done to the V3 cast (though possibly with some other nastiness like sensory depravation and solitary confinement).

The second is that...well, the premise of Junko indoctrinating them one by one into a cult sounds deep and clever until you seriously think about it for like 5 minutes. The timeline simply doesn't work. Junko would have maybe 10 months tops to pull something like this off. And making matters worse is that she's in a separate class, and has a whole lot of other shit to prepare in the year leading up to the Tragedy. Manipulating Yasuke and Izuru, arranging for the school council massacre, getting Monaca and the Warriors of Hope on her side, and all the while keeping up appearances as a member of Class 78. A class who were implied in the DR1 photos to be abnormally tightknit by Hope's Peak standards, like Class 77-B was with Chisa and Chiaki.

I've seen plenty of headcanons for how she'd go about it. And yes, stuff like the Twilight Syndrome incident could help things. But that only applies to about a third of the class. And overall just about every explanation I've heard treats Junko and Class 77-B like they exist in a vacuum. With none of the other people at school noticing that anything is off. Which is just nonsensical. DR0 shows a lot of the events right before the Tragedy from the perspective of people like Kyoko, Yasuke, Makoto, and Jin. And NOBODY seems to think there's something kind of off about Class 77-B, or brings up that Junko seems to spend a strange amount of time around them. Makoto of all people would be just the kind of person to try and bond with some of his senpais. And the Ultimate Detective not seeing any signs of bizarre cult-like behavior among the school's students is pretty absurd.

Not to mention that it requires that while they're still at school the Remnants never behave in such a way that's counterproductive to Junko's plans. Like Teruteru is briefly alluded to in DR0. Now am I really expected to believe that someone like him, who presumably would already be part of Junko's cult that late into the timeline, wouldn't already be doing some fucked up shit? Like increasingly creepy sexual harassment or violent mood swings? Same for people like Hiyoko, Nekomaru, Akane, Ibuki, and so on. This premise requires them all to be good little robots and rein in the Despair antics until after the riots spiral out of control. That's a level of subtlety that many in Class 77-B just don't have.

And finally...I'm sorry, but no. You can't have it both ways. You can't have the Remnants be fully responsible for carrying out their misdeeds of their own free will. And then have them be rehabilitated and redeemed via the Neo World Program. Using targeted amnesia to rehabilitate criminals is unethical to an absurd degree. If you're going to say "These people deserve a second chance", then you're going to have to commit to doing things the hard way. Detain and rehabilitate them with their memories intact. Literally the only scenario where something as extreme as the Neo World Program would ever be remotely justifiable would be an equally extreme scenario like a subject having been subjected to literal mind control.

So yeah. That's my controversial take. I disagree with DR3's depiction, but think the Remnants being brainwashed as more than just a figure of speech is perfectly reasonable. Mainly for pragmatic reasons related to story consistency, due stuff like DR0 not only doesn't have any hint of Junko secretly running a cult, but makes a lot less sense if we assume that's going on offscreen. But also for some ideological reasons too. Plus the alternative requires a level of competence and manipulative brilliance that it wildly inconsistent with what Junko showed in DR1. There is no way that someone who could convert all of Class 77-B with the constraints listed above in such a short timeframe, would be so easily thwarted by stuff like Sakura's sacrifice and Makoto's rallying speech at the end. In fact Class 78 should have all gone completely mad after a year in isolation with her if she was as brilliant as some fans hype her up to be.

OK WAIT NO NO NO i didnt mean to imply that junko should like. Run a cult or something. i agree with all of these points, i think that TOO personalized of manipulation would be unrealistic. the way dr3 did the brainwashing seemed lazy and anticlimactic for junko but also junko is smart and wouldnt put in all that unnecessary work for a class she doesnt care about.

youre right that brainwashing and mind altering does consistently show up throughout danganronpa, but i do also really really wish we couldve seen it be pulled off in a slightly more personalized manner. i used mikan as an example in that post but i didnt mean to imply i wanted them to show junko doing that to like. i dont have a clear vision of how danganronpa 3 shouldve ended. i think i’d be a lot more on board with the brainwashing if theyd just. Done it a little better, made it more climactic, made the scene more intense or something idk. it’s just so obvious to me that dr3’s ending (and dr3 as a whole but especially the ending) really seemed rushed and careless. we BARELY even get to see the remnants while theyre despaired, with the exception of komaeda. which SUCKSSSS SO BAD i wish they couldve at least incorporated THAT. like for dr being about the apocalypse we dont really get to see much of. You kinda felt out of place between all those ultimates... but you knew you shouldn't feel like this.

You were invited to a small pool party, hosted by Mahiru Koizumi. She's a really good friend of you. She invited almost her whole class and... they were all really kind!

You were glad, because you hated the stigma regarding the reserve course. All the ultimates you've met until now, have been nice and didn't care about you not having a talent.

Well, almost all of them at least.

You decided not to participate in the weird bet the pink haired guy and the big guy had... something about 'who can drink the most cola and still walk a straight line'

They probably weren't aware that there weren't any drugs in cola... not anymore.

You grimaced. You wanted to sit somewhere calmer.

Thank god, there was someone at the very back, who looked out of place as well. You haven't met him yet, but he looked decent. He had wavy, white hair, and looked really thin. He was the only one with no one sitting near him.

So you easily decided to sit next to that guy. He looked surprised when you sat next to him. "I'm sorry... I can move seats, if you want to..?"

What? "Uhm... no. Why? Do I smell or something?"

"Ah, no no! Of course not! I just didn't expect someone to want to sit next to me by choice."

Did that guy just really hate human contact or did he just have a really shit self-esteem?

"Don't sweat it! That guy's always like that. A real weirdo." The pink haired guy - Kazuichi - said.

"Haha..." that guy chuckled. "Yes, that's true. I'm neither talented or well liked. You'll probably save yourself some time, if you don't start talking to someone like me..."

He smiled bitterly. What did he mean, he wasn’t talented? If that's the case-

"Hey, don't worry! I don't have a talent either. I'm from the reserve course."

You didn't remember seeing him in the reserve course, but if Mahiru invited him, he must be nice.

But it seems like that may have been the wrong thing to say. Because his smile quickly faded. "The Reserve Course, huh?"

"Uh... yeah." you answered hesitantly now. Why did he seem so weird about it?

"You should have said so from the beginning." He sighed.

Hm? What did he mean? But before you could ask, a little guy came strolling to us, with a pot in his hand. "Here comes the Ultimate Chef's famous stew! Ordered by Miss Mahiru Koizumi herself!" He winked at her. She smiled akwardly back.

When he gave everyone a bowl, you quickly forgot about your conversation with that other guy.

He was actually pretty nice. You probably were just sensitive about that topic and wrongly judged his attitude.

He always talked last and immediately stopped talking, when someone else said something.

He also went on a weird ramble about hope and how he doesn't even deserve to be in the presence of everyone.

Hiyoko rolled her eyes and told him to shut up. He did.

And he only started talking again, when someone asked for his opinion.

You felt bad about his self-esteem. He seemed to take this 'not having talent' thing way more serious than you.

At one point, they decided to play a game - some kind of scavenger hunt, that tested their abilities - and needed to split the teams, they were in.

"I think we should just randomly assign the teams... that way there will be no bias!" The white haired guy - Nagito - said.

"Hmmm... I think it'd be better to split the teams equally, based on our strengths" you said. Most people seemed to agree and nodded to you. Nagito slowly turned his head to you.

"...I'm sorry. Did you say something?" He asked coldly. But from his look it was obvious, that he wasn't asking, because he didn't understand you. He was asking to taunt you. His eyes changed, they didn't look like the same eyes, that looked at the ultimates just a second before.

But everyone seemed to ignore him and get along with your idea.

"Whooo, you're so smart Y/N!!!" Ibuki cheered.

The teams eventually split so you were in a team with Sonia, Fuyuhiko and Nagito.

Fortunately, all of them seemed to be pretty capable. You and Nagito did most of the mental work and Fuyuhiko and Sonia the physical.

At one point you and Nagito had different opinions on a riddle. And Nagito's ended up being right.

...of course he would be cocky about it again.

"We wouldn’t have wasted so much of the ultimate's precious time, if you would have just listend to me from the begining Y/N..."

You didn't want to fight and he did have a point, so you simply answered "Yeah, I'm sorry."

"It's alright, I forgive you. It just seems like you temporarily forgot your place. Below me."

You tried to take a deep breath.

'Don't hit him, don't hit him...'

"It is not Y/N's fault! They gave a valuable input to this riddle, that I could not!" Sonia declared, softly.

"Yeah, you're acting different, Nagito. Can't you just go back, to being a different kind of weirdo again?" Fuyuhiko spoke sharply.

So it looks like he didn't normally behave like that... why did he towards you then? Did he hate you? Did you do something?

It wasn't because you're from the reserve course, right? He said he didn't have a talent either...

"Haha, I know what you're thinking right now." He let out a carefree chuckle, as he looked at you.

"I think you misunderstood something... See, even trash like me has an Ultimate talent." He smiled sadly.

What? Then why did he-? What was wrong with that guy?

"I just don't get your attitude. Why do you even dislike me so much? Because I don't have an ultimate talent?" You asked him with an irritated expression.

"Hm? Dislike? I don't dislike you. I actually think, I quite like you." Nagito answered with a shrug.

... What the hell was he saying now? Was he trying to taunt you again?

"But it's only because you at least don't seem to be dumb, so don't get your hopes up too much, alright?" He gave you a closed-eyed smile.

After that evening you wished to never hear from that guy again.

But sadly, you weren't so lucky.

When you visited the classroom to see Mahiru, he always stared at you from the back of the room.

"What's up with him? Is he thinking about how to murder me?" You asked Mahiru. You were seriously weirded out by his dislike towards you.

You knew, you didn't need his approval, but it hurt...

He was not only smart, you also really liked him in some way. If it weren't for his attitude... why can't he just treat you like the others?

"Awww... don't be so harsh. He just has a crush on you."

You deadpanned her. But she laughed. "Really! You know, all he talks about is Y/N this and Y/N that... and it's kinda weird, because nobody else is starting those conversations. He just randomly starts to talk about you."

...what? "Are you sure he doesn’t just talk about how much he hates me?" You asked her kinda annoyed.

"Mhm. He's always talking about the pictures you're drawing. He says, they are way too beautiful to not be given an Ultimate title. He also randomly talks about how he likes your voice, or how situations would resolve much quicker, if you were there."

Now you were more than just a little speechless. She was just pranking you, right? There is no way... he was so rude to you!

You decided to not think too much about someone like him anymore and decided to head home.

But someone stopped you.

It was Nagito Komaeda.

You quickly looked around, if there were enough witnesseses. He surely wouldn't kill you in a public place, right?

"Y/N. I... wanted to ask you something."

He looked unsure, so you decided not to push it. "What is it?"

"I want you to go out with me... please."

What? You didn't respond to him and just stared at him for another couple of minutes.

He sighed and looked on the ground.

"See... I don't know why either. I know you don't matter at all. But somehow... I can't stop thinking about you."

The 'I know you don't matter' part didn't really help, but you were still confused. Why the sudden change? If he thinks you're below him?

"I also know, that I can be difficult. I've been told by several people. So, I hope you can see past that, because... I think I really like you."

"Nagito..." you softly shook your head. You didn't want to reject him. And in all honesty, you liked him as well, but...

"Okay. I'll date you." You decided.

You supposed you could work things out with him. He seemed to suffer because of his world view himself... So maybe you could help him through that.

You still sincerely believed, that he was a good person.
