#I just love debbie a lot as a character and I think she deserves the world

so from what ive been seeing in the show so far it seems they’re gonna pair off paul with debbie and here’s why I don’t rly like it
btw in case anyone is wondering yes this happened in the comic and here’s comic paul vs show paul for comparasion
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(At least they wont have debbie fucking a hospice patient in this)
while im normally all for “yes girl get that dick” in terms of Debbie’s character it just seems ,, cheapening to chain her to another man to show she’s “whole” now. Debbie as a character/person has little to nothing to gain out of this relationship realistically. Women can live without “needing”a relationship to make them complete. Especially after what she’s gone through, like thats a 20 year relationship its gonna leave emotional scars.
Also the show seems to have this AVERSION to giving debbie actual female friends for longer than 1 scene at a time. Like im happy she has Art as a friend but she needs a woman in her life. Like I loved the scene with Olga at the start of s2 and the interaction w Carol of the SOS group but! Olga went back to Moscow and debbie can’t return to the group of bc of alana’s ugly ass ex husband. Like if they MUST pair her off with Paul just like the comic at least idk show that her past trauma is affecting her? Show her being messy and making mistakes or even Paul pointing out like “hey I don’t think you’re in the headspace for this” and breaking it off
Maybe then have debbie realize she’s better off single and begins to focus more on herself now! She could get a good friend group (or at least one female bestie pls) and in that stability of being single and with more immediate support in new friends! Show her taking up new hobbies to occupy her time outside of her job and enjoying life without ‘needing’ a partner, no characters growth should be dependent on a romantic partner!
It will make whenever nolan drags his sorry ass back to earth to see her that much more hard hitting because she doesn’t need him, he needs her. it’ll add so much more depth and struggle to him just trying to regain her trust and then if the show does do them getting back together it’ll actually feel more earned instead of happening off screen which I hated.
Also bc in the comic debbie breaks it off with paul bc after she sees nolan again she says “it didnt feel right being with paul anymore” like,, its so bs. Comic debbie has no self respect.
Ok thats all bye bye

i HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE when monica gallagher is written/portrayed as being mean!! i hate it!!! her relationship with any of her children wasn’t a “if you need to be mean, be mean to me” type of situation (because i keep seeing that on tiktok), that’s how frank’s relationship was with his kids. frank used his kids, took his anger out on them, and treated them like they were less than human- that isn’t how monica was.
one of the things that made monica’s existence as a whole hurt her kids is her kindness. monica was always so sweet, she never had a bad thing to say about anyone- that’s what hurt. she would leave her kids and make them feel like they mean nothing, then come back and treat them with such kindness, something they don’t see often, only to leave them again. she would give them everything, and then leave them with nothing. i think that’s why ian and debbie both often fell victim to her, because they were both such victims of frank. i don’t mean that the other kids weren’t also victims, but ian and debbie were in different ways. frank physically and emotionally abused ian, and he used and manipulated debbie constantly. frank would take everything out on the both of them, and being middle children they were lonely and ignored, so when monica comes back and shows them both kindness, love, and actually pays attention to them, they’re drawn to her. they are both so deprived of attention, and for monica to actually see them for once means a lot more to them than it would to the others.
so NO, monica gallagher is not mean. and that’s why she is such a well written character!! i don’t even hate monica, i just hate the circumstances. i hate frank. monica is so sad and one of frank’s biggest victims because i feel like she always had hope that she could fix everything, but she failed. she never wanted kids but frank forced her to, and she couldn’t handle it. we’re meant to be against monica, but at the same time, there’s also this pity that comes with seeing her. she isn’t frank- her intentions were never meant to harm anybody, yet she still did. she’s such a “what if?” type character, too, because you see her being so kind and wanting to fix everything, but she’s also unmedicated- and not necessarily by choice. i don’t know, i don’t like monica for the obvious reasons, but i also love her character. she’s one of the most tragic characters on shameless and as much as i fucking despised for what she did to her kids, i think she deserved a lot better.

shameless hot takes
i kind of dig the way lip ended up as a failure. i know a lot of people hate what the show did to him, how he never lived up to his potential (the same way they do it to rory gilmore) but like. that happens. lifes just like that. sometimes people who have had everything to live with grandiosity end up ruining everything up, and lips life was HARD and it SUCKED so him failing its kind of expectable i think. and its not like lips life ended, mans not even 30 and hes not just smart hes a genius, he will end up turning the table and coming straight to the top, i believe so.
frank doesn't love his children. i know people like to think frank was somewhat nice sometimes and that he was troubled but he loved the gallaghers his own way but i dont think he really did. he didnt even knew them. he was just too selfish and a narcissist and not even once a "act of love" was genuine or didnt have a gain for him or was somewhat for his benefit or interest.
of all plots, i believe gay jesus was the worst. i tried to remeber every other plot of the show and dont get me wrong the frank and his buddy pal mickey oshea SUCKED and i love ian hes my favorite character but what the fuck was that. the idea is really nice but it took so long to convey this arc of mania of him and it just was really badly written and executed and later it doesn't have importance to the plot. no surprise cameron monaghan wanted to skip shameless after that.
gallavich is not a healthy goal relationship. i mean yeah, they do love each other and they are good to each other, and i will excuse them for all the shit they did as teenagers cause they seemed to forgive each other and grow from it and i dont think they knew best but as adults they dont fucking communicate and mick broke ians leg like common. also most of time ian just seems to regret having married mick is really frustrating. i genuinely dont understand how that happened cause gallavich was all the writes had to milk and serve for the last seasons and they still fucked it up.
debbie is a rapist. she just is. just like sheila is too, i believe, and frank, and mandy, and jody, and estefania (i dont think jimmysteve is tho). they practiced nonconsensual sex and thats rape, end of story. i know the deborah debate is kind of hot ground and everybody has a different opinion about it cause she was young and didnt have the proper sex ed. but she did it not once, but twice AFTER facing consequences and getting to educate herself about what she did and why that was wrong, and i believe she would do it again if she had the motivation like she did on those circumstances. not saying matty or derick were cool guys, fuck them, matty wanted to go out with an underage girl when he met debbie and he kept going out with her after knowing she was much younger than he first thought and derick know that having sex can lead to having a baby and he and his family should have tried to be better to franny, but still they didnt deserved to by lied and abused by deb.
the gallaghers house should be debbie and carl's to decide what to do. the house is in fionas name, that much is true, but it is clear they kept contact with fiona at the begging of season 10 as she calls debbie to know about freddie and at that hall of fame episode too, so that much wouldn't be a problem. also, as fiona left, she left debbie in charge of the house's finances, and i believe the responsibility of what to do with the house is left with debbie too. i dont think fiona would be thrilled with the wouse being sold but she moved on and if her siblings are up to moving on too i dont think she would be opposed to it. that said, she would let the house deed on debbies hand i believe. taking up the fact that debbie is a mom with a little child and no other place to live, the fact she doesnt want to sell the house is comprehensible and i dont think any other gallagher can say its not, even more so lip. they tried to make the decision voting, letting the majority determinate what to do, but i dont think thats fair since lip could very easily get a house to himself and ian and mickey too, they had the money. now, about carl, is simply cause he paid for the house, therefore he should had a say on it. season 6, when the house was going to be sold, no other Gallagher than fiona was really trying to make to money to buy it. when she couldnt, carl saved the day and gave the money, and fiona was reluctant but she had no other option than to accept it, otherwise they would lose the house. even though the house is in fionas name like she likes to make it very clear, it is carls, and if he wanted to he could have put it in someone elses name, not lip cause he's in debt cause of the credit cards he has gotten to pay college, but he could have made it ians or anyone elses. he didnt cause he respects family and he respects fiona. since the house is his, and he also didnt really had any other place like debbie, they both should make the decision together.
fiona fucking sucks. i know a lot of people hates her and a lot loves her, and theres people in here that knows shes middle ground just like basically everybody on the show, which is called SHAMELESS for a reason. and i can agree with everybody. my point here is that she did nice things and stupid things and i dont hate her or love her for them, nor do i think all is forgiven because of her trauma or that shes number one worst character of the show. i think she sucks, think that she was wrong for all the liam shit, that she is an agent of chaos, that she was a bad girlfriend for all of her boyfriends just like they were bad for her (except mike he rocks), i think she make some of them worst really; i understand her desire to grown and be someone but i think it was risky to put the gallaghers house on the line so she could open the laundry (even more so cause i dont really consider it hers but carls), i understand how at some point she wanted to grow and take care of herself and be less of an parent in her sibling's life cause if she took care of herself since she was nine i think her siblings could try and take care of each other and their own ass a little so she could start living but the way she didnt really helped ian, the way she shut down debbie and was sad when debbie shuted her down, the way she left carl to his white boy fase without as much as trying and the way she said to them put VERONICA and KEVIN first at their emergency call before her was insane and she should be dragged for it idc. she was always mean to her siblings romantic interests too and that really bugs me cause mandy put lip in college and mickey cared for ian.
lip fucking sucks. most people here think the similarity between lip and frank starts and finishes on alcoholism and appearance but i think its more than that, i think both of them are narcissistic motherfuckers. i cant think of a single time lip put effort in anything for any other reason than to satisfy himself. it is the most evident when you think about his relationships SPECIALLY tami and fred, but if you think about his desire to be a father, the way he treated fiona when she was down, the whole sierra fiasco and how he treated her sons daddy, the karen ian thing; he even said that he helps his alcoholic friends because he thinks that if they cant do it then certainly lip himself won't be able to do it. i cant hold ian to the same parameters, i only think deb fiona and carl are really there for each other but ian gets a pass cause hes just selfish to some extent. he is bipolar and shit went down when he was still a child; still, joining the army and sending no news was a dick move and when he was good and on his meds and working as an EMT i think he wasnt really there for his family, tho he cared for mandy. cant really say much cause most of the time he was out of himself or in jail.

rank the gallaghers
debbie - i have a huge bias towards her as i too grew up wanting a relationship with my father yet never getting it. her entire life she wanted to be loved and yet she was constantly abandoned/shunned. a lot of people hate her cause of the way she fought against fiona in the middle seasons, but they refuse to understand why (fi abandoned her just like monica, in debbies eyes). so yea , she's my number one gallagher,
lip & fi - i love them both equally, They both raised their siblings, not in the best way, but they did and i think they deserve their kudos for that. I love lip cause of his downfalls and his growth after that. he was supposed to be frank 2.0 and for a while he was, but he got better and he took the steps he needed to be lip gallagher not frank!!! fiona , she is soooo dear to me especially in the earlier seasons. imo she did get worse through the seasons and there were times were i could not stand her god/victim complex. but she did sacrifice a lot and deserved much much better from the men around her
ian - my literally me character. i cannot state enough how much i love him yet hate him. he is everything to me yet every time i rememeber how he and i are the same i want to scream and bite. he might have gotten his happy ending with mickey but there was so much more he deserved , especially getting therapy for being groomed since he was like 15 and getting closure with monica.
liam - he would be higher up if he had more to give but he is the inly one who never did anything wrong, he is my son and i hope he succeeds forever and ever
carl - i don't hate carl i just find him incredibly overrated and his plotlines never really stuck to me. but he was a great brother and deserves more credit for helping them rather than just being "hot"
monica - oh my god she is just the most tragic character to me, destined for downfall all because of franks obsession with her when she was manic. i think of her lost potential all the time and how if given the chance (meaning no frank) she would've tried to be a decent mom. she would've taken the steps, she would fail a lot but she would try
frank - i hate him, he can be funny, but i hope he is burning in hell forever and is like tantalus in the sense he can never drink alcohol cause evrytime he reaches for it, it disappears.
i dont think i missed anyone else but , i will say for all of them, they never reached their true potential and it hurts to think about it. like woaghhh, they made it but at what cost

Fandom: Supergirl
Relationships: Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor
Characters: Kara Danvers, Lena Luthor, Original Danvers/Luthor Children, Morgan Edge, Jess
Summary: A slice of life story. Lena is trying to balance her life at L-Corp with home life with Kara and her twins. However, things don't always go so smoothly.
Word Count: 8,043
Lena sat in the backseat of her town car viewing the results of her latest project at L-Corp. Her latest project was trying to use a 3-D printer to create organic limbs and organs. They were able to successfully create an organic leg today, but it exploded after 5 minutes. She knew there was damage to the lab, but was not sure the entire extent of it. Her lab assistants were all running around like chickens with their heads cut off. It was why she was in her town car being driven to L-Corp at 6:30 am in the morning. She didn’t know what made her upset more. The fact that the experiment failed and caused possible major damage, or the fact that she couldn’t take her 6 year old twin girls Liza and Alexa to school this morning. She had promised them the last several days to take them to school in the morning, but something always seems to come up at work. She walked into the living room dreading to tell them she was failing again to keep her word for a third day in a row. They were glued to the tv eating their cereal watching Kara as Supergirl fighting the Pied Piper. He was controlling the rats to attack the citizens of downtown National City. Lena shuddered. She hated rats.
“Look at Jeju go!” squealed Alexa.
“Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a pet rat?” asked Liza.
“I don’t know if Mommy would let us keep him.”
“Why not?”
“She hates rats. Remember when we tried to convince her to let us babysit Fernando the Ferret?”
“Yeah, she screamed when we brought it home. She wouldn’t get off the table until JeJu flew it away.”
“I bet Jeju would let us have a pet?”
“I don’t know. Auntie Alex says that Jeju is too whipped to not do what Mommy says.”
“What does that mean?”
Liza shrugged her shoulders and went back to watching the tv. Lena approached the girls and cleared her throat to get their attention.
“Hey, girls. Mommy has to leave early today. Jeju is going to have to take you to school.”
Liza just kept eating her cereal. Alexa came up to Lena and gave her a hug.
She said, “It’s okay mommy. We know you have important things to do today.”
Alexa then ran over to Liza jumping up and down.
“Do you know what this means?” squealed Alexa
Liza's eyes popped open after she thought about it a moment and then started jumping up and down with Alexa.
“Jeju will fly us to school.” squealed Liza
They then started to run around the room pretending like they could fly. Afterwards, Lena ran to her car in tears. She isn’t sure what hurt her more: the fact that the girls were not phased by her unkept promises or the fact that Kara was the preferred parent. Kara is always the fun parent while Lena is viewed as a Debbie downer by the girls. Before she had the girls, she never saw herself as a parent. She didn’t really have good examples growing up. Her dad ignored her for the most part and her step mother Lillian hated her. Granted Lillian and her relationship is on the road to repair, but it took a lot of work. Then, there was Lex. She shudders when she thinks of him. He would torture her constantly growing up and well into adulthood.
She had no thoughts on continuing the Luthor line until she met Kara. She broke down her walls and taught her not only how to love, but that she deserved to be loved by others. When they first got married, she was hesitant about having children. However, when she would stare at Kara, she knew that there was no one else that she would ever want to jump into the unknown with. The road to having the girls was filled with struggles. They first went the adoption route. While Kryptonians have both sex organs, their DNA is not compatible with humans. They went to 20 adoption agencies in the US and overseas, and their application was automatically denied. The Luthor name was toxic to them especially after all the evil things that Lex did. Lena had suggested just having Kara adopt the child, and then they could raise the baby together. However, Kara vehemently refused. She wanted both of them to be parents in every way possible. Lena decided to take things into her own hands. She experimented on herself with Kara’s DNA to see if she could combine it with hers so her body could carry a Kyptonian child. She nearly died in the process (which Kara was pissed about especially since she didn’t know about the experiments), but she changed her DNA enough that it could accept Kara’s sperm. They had their twins on the first try. When she first gave birth to them, she held them in her arms and promised them that she would always be with them unlike her family. She never wanted them to feel unwanted or unloved like she did as a child. She feels now like she has broken that promise on so many levels.

Hi! What are your top 5 qaf characters and why?
Ahhhh so hard to narrow it down!!
Um. Well. I'm going to cheat a tiny bit because there are some ties. :P
5) Ben Bruckner
Tumblr media
Is he the deepest character on the show? Not exactly. But I loved his character--how he deals with having HIV, how he's such an idealist who stumbles in practicality. That latter part is fairly relatable to me lol. He seems highly confident, but he's insecure about his health, his writing, and more. Yet he also knows that he deserves to be loved and appreciated as he is, flaws and all, and never wavers from this. This belief in turn makes him the perfect match for Michael, a character who waffles between fantasy and reality.
Ben loves Michael for who he is and understands Brian and Michael's sometimes unhealthy bond precisely because of his ideals: everyone should be loved as they are (a major theme of QaF as a whole). He just doesn't really apply that to himself, which is very, well, human. This results in him messing around with steroids, pushing people away at times, clinging at others, and in the end accepting vulnerability and failure as part of being human.
5) Debbie Novotny
Tumblr media
I love Debbie. She's kind of the group's wise and loving mom, the voice of conscience and reason and kindness. She's a good person, and the show really dug into that and explored this aspect of her character to a rewarding degree. See, Debbie being so convinced she needs to be a good person is precisely where she's most flawed and thereby what makes her so interesting. Is she a good sister to Vic and mom to not just Michael, but Brian, Emmett, Justin, Ted, etc.? Yes. But she's also super flawed and unable to see past herself sometimes, and that's why she's great.
Debbie defines herself by her relationships with others and is determined to stick up for her loved ones. Unfortunately, that means she sometimes doesn't realize that--while she often does know best, often isn't always, and she has to let go and allow characters like Michael and Vic to live their own lives. It's easier for her to let go with the other boys, but not so much with Michael or Vic, because they're clearly the closest to her.
Debbie concocts this elaborate fantasy father for Michael because she needs to be a good person who married a hero rather than a scared teen who fooled around with a drag queen who wasn't sure of his own identity . But the thing is, she's a good person as she is, despite growing she still has to do. Her choosing to raise Michael with love and acceptance, to stand by Vic and nurse him through the worst of his illness--she's heroic for those things.
I love that the narrative calls Debbie on her "good person" complex. Firstly, she almost lets it interfere with her finding love with Horvath, when the point is that she has to help Horvath grow--and thereby accept that she herself needs to grow. Secondly, of course, when Vic moves out and she has a terrible fight with him, and he dies before they can reconcile.
4) Hunter Novotny-Bruckner
Tumblr media
Hunter's iconic, from the classic "YOU F*CKED A MURDERER?" “What’s the big deal, I used a condom” scene to his comments about ending up in jail for opening Ben's letter. He's also a terrified teenager who's been through far more than he should have had to. His journey--how he pushes buttons with Michael and Ben precisely because he fully expects them to give up on him and wants to see how far he can push them and still be welcome--is so very true to trauma, especially in young kids.
Hunter's also very self-aware in ways Michael and Ben really aren't, which makes him a good fit into the family dynamic.
2-3) Michael Novotny
Tumblr media
I wrote a whole meta on Michael so there's not a lot to say that I haven't said there, but I will reiterate that Michael gets an unfairly bad rap from the fandom. Like I've barely been in it and seen a lot of negative takes on him that I think do a real disservice to the story as a whole. Michael is a jerk sometimes, sure, and whiny, but he's an integral part of the story and part of the reason Justin and Brian work so well together (as opposed to the hindrance I've seen a lot of takes posit him to be).
2-3) Justin Taylor
Tumblr media
Yeah, he and Michael tie and it varies by day, but for today, Justin's got the edge. I love his arc and his flaws. I do wish more had been done with certain plot lines (like the Pink Posse one, which falls into a category of 'makes sense and could work but doesn't develop organically and isn't fully explored').
Justin's a great character because he's not just a representation of sunshine or innocence like he could have been--what honestly most writers would have written the new young initiate to be. He's young, but he also has all the flaws of youth too. He's thereby a great foil for Brian and Michael in that he doesn't actually treat people much better than either of them do.
The show never glorifies Justin's immaturity, but neither does it patronize him. His wants and goals are taken just as seriously as the older characters, and his choice to love Brian forms the crux of what the show says love is. He's treated like a human being first before being a teenager/inner child, all while his teenager-ness is never denied (99.99% of teenage characters do NOT act like any teenagers I know; Justin absolutely does).
1) Brian Kinney
Tumblr media
Is it really surprising to anyone? He's the show's central character and one of my favorite archetypes: the Byronic hero. Mad, bad, dangerous to know, but with the additional element of a heart of gold under all those layers.
What I love about him as a character is how contradictory and human he is. He's really a wounded child who is a hedonist to avoid going after what he wants (love, justification to be alive). The crux of his issues come down to how his father told him that he wished Brian was never born and tried to coerce his mother into having an abortion. Imo, there's a part of Brian that genuinely fears/even at times believes that he should never have existed (hence his constant wrestling with the idea of growing old/dying and yet weird attraction to dying young/quasi ideation like jumping on the edge of a roof in episode 1). Brian's determined to make his existence known as part of an attempt to prove he does deserve to live because he desperately wants to.
Seeing him come to accept love--not just accept being loved and admitting he loved, but knowing that time (always his biggest fear) wouldn't change it--that was a beautiful arc. He's really well written.
Also, shout outs to: Ted, Blake, Emmett, Melanie, and Lindsay. Ted I think is in the top group for well-written characters especially, and Melanie just won a special place in my heart after she screamed “I don’t CARE what men think about their dicks!” In episode 3. Mood Mel mood.

Please Care About Aquaman With Me: Wrapping Up the Nineties
Welcome back to Poseidonis! This one is a long one, but I wanted to wrap up this era, so let’s just dive in, okay? (See what I did there?)
Last time, both Garth and Koryak attempted to overthrow Arthur, who banished Koryak and gave Garth a great big hug. Also, Arthur was officially reinstated as king, but Mera refused to go back to being queen since her marriage to Arthur is no longer valid under Atlantean law. The drama!
Our last installment coincided with the end of the nearly 50 issue Peter David run, which built most of the post-Crisis Aquaverse up from scratch. After a couple of fill-in issues, he’s replaced by Erik Larsen. Apparently there was a long and vicious rivalry between PAD and Larsen, which is a fascinating internet rabbit hole to go down (do you want to see grown men behaving extremely unprofessionally on very old message boards? google this shit), which may be why Larsen promptly throws out a lot of PAD’s toys and brings in his own. Some of them never do anything interesting ever so I won’t really be talking about them here. (I’m sorry, Lagoon Boy! I liked you in Young Justice!)
Also, we’ve reached the early 2000s, so the title of this post isn’t entirely accurate, but we’re closing out this run and will start fresh with the 2003 series, so...just go with it, okay?
Anyway, the Poseidonians almost immediately discover a hidden civilization beneath their own, led by King Noble (Larsen was not working overtime on character names). He and Mera are intensely attracted to each other, leaving Arthur jealous and sulky:
Tumblr media
He tries to win Mera back by shaving and cutting his hair to look like he did when they were younger, but it’s not that easy:
Tumblr media
Mera points out that their marriage is no longer valid under Atlantean law because of infidelity, and Arthur agrees that yes, okay, there have been “infidelities on both sides,” which...as you’ll recall, Mera was raped, so fuck you very much, Arthur.
Anyway, even if Mera isn’t impressed by Arthur’s naked chin and sad sack demeanor, someone else is:
Tumblr media
Yep, Debbie’s back, and she’s changed her codename to Indigo, not that it will matter because she will continue to barely do anything and disappear. Anyway Debbie had previously been a potential love interest for Koryak and is prone to saying things like “kewl,” which leads me to believe she’s about Koryak’s age, much like Dolphin and Garth are the same age. I’m not one to clutch my pearls over an age difference here or there, but Arthur seems to habitually look at women his sons’ ages as prime dating material and that deserves some side eye. However, there is a MUCH BIGGER REASON these two shouldn’t be kissing, which we will soon learn.
Speaking of Garth, he is busy being tragic and passive aggressive whenever Arthur gives political responsibility to or even pays attention to anyone else:
Tumblr media
I am FASCINATED by this aspect of Garth’s character so stay tuned for a separate meta post on that. (Yes, more Aquaposting. I’m sorry.)
Also, Dolphin drops a bombshell:
Tumblr media
GARTH NO. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. He spends the next couple of issues bewailing the situation to a mermaid who he once mistook for his dead girlfriend, which does not improve things. GARTHOLEMEW. TERRIBLE.
Meanwhile, my darling Koryak is in a bit of a pickle:
Tumblr media
The woman on the left is, shockingly, Atlanna, Arthur’s mom, who literally everyone thought was dead. (She’s not actually a mermaid, the bad guy did fucked up surgery on her.) The incredibly annoying bad guy used to be called Charybdis, and he’s the reason Arthur lost a hand. Now he’s back, he looks like this for some reason, and he’s changed his name to Piranha Man because he thinks it sounds cooler. This really feels like Larsen going “No one even knows what a Charybdis is, ugh, David, you’re so pretentious” and changing everything about Peter David’s creation to be an asshole. But Piranha Man sucked when he was Charybdis and he still sucks now, so it’s really more of a lateral move rather than making him better or worse as a villain.
Anyway he has decided to capture all of Arthur’s loved ones in revenge. He manages to snag Mera, Atlan, Garth, Dolphin, and Debbie as well as Atlanna and Koryak, but Arthur rescues them and then just sort of...doesn’t know how to deal with his mom being back so he puts her in a hospital and ignores her. Also Koryak just eaves off page and like three issues later Arthur realizes he never got to talk to him. Doing great, Arthur!
Anyway. Garth finally gets over himself and proposes to Dolphin, who accepts. The Titans arrive for the wedding:
Tumblr media
LOOK AT HIM HOLDING LIAN. PRECIOUS.
He has a little heart-to-heart with Donna about where his head’s at:
Tumblr media
“I was sort of pushed into this...and I don’t love Dolphin as much as I loved Tula...” This is gonna go great.
Anyway, Garth and Dolphin get hitched, and then there’s a very stupid plotline where basically there’s like a gangster fish that’s getting everyone high on hallucinogenic fish secretions? Sure. The fish secretions just exacerbate all the underwater romantic complications going on: Mera is attracted to Noble but still has feelings for Arthur, Arthur is still in love with Mera but interested in Debbie, blah blah blah. Everyone gets all hornt up on fish secretions, and then...
Tumblr media
LOLOLOL OH NO. TERRIBLE. Anyway yeah it turns out Atlan is Debbie’s father too. This information is so shocking that Debbie instantly vanishes and never appears in another Aquaman comic ever again. Whoops?
Speaking of women disappearing forever, Atlanna’s doing better:
Tumblr media
There’s a whole thing where dead people come back from hell, including Atlanna’s husband, King Trevis, who is the one who actually abandoned baby Arthur in the middle of the ocean when he was born. Atlanna basically defeats him by calling him a cuck, and then vanishes until the New 52, where everything about her will be different. Bye, Atlanna!
Also, people coming back from hell involves a lot of lava, some of which burns off King Noble’s antennae, at which point Mera promptly realizes she’s not interested in him at all, he was just releasing sexy pheromones from his antennae without realizing it. Bye, Noble!
With their romantic rivals thus vanquished or sister-zoned, Arthur and Mera admit that they still love each other and get back together. I give them about a year. (No, really. I’ve read the comics after this.) And with that, Larsen’s run is over. Bye, Larsen!
He is replaced by Dan Jurgens, who immediately plunges into a Garth-centric story (good) that starts with Arthur and Garth...on a talk show?
Tumblr media
HI YES HELLO, I’M FASCINATED BY THIS. Garth is a prince now? This is new! He’s literally never been called a prince before. Does this mean Arthur has named Garth his heir? Is it an honorary title? DAN JURGENS, EXPLAIN.
(Also, hi, Rodunn, welcome to being a key Aquaman supporting character for about three years and then going away forever. Too bad, I like Rodunn.)
Arthur is on this talk show trying to get support for Atlantis, because the land nation of Cerdia has committed many acts of aggression against Atlantis and the UN is ignoring Arthur’s pleas. In fact, Cerdia attempts to assassinate Arthur with a bomb during the show, but still, no assistance or sanctions from the international community.
(Cerdia, btw, is sort of vaguely “foreign” with no location specified in the comics, though the DC wiki says it’s near the Canary Islands. It’s ruled by the evil Queen Charlanda, who wants to conquer Atlantis for...pearls, idk. The whole thing is very silly.)
In the midst of a devastating attack on Atlantis...Dolphin has her baby!
Tumblr media
Awww, they’re cute.
However, almost immediately after this, the baby is kidnapped by a mysterious figure who is clearly allied with Charlanda. Arthur and Garth take the fight to Cerdia and discover that Charlanda’s secret ally is...
Tumblr media
...Orm! Who has been manipulating Charlanda the whole time, and pretty much immediately causes her death after being confronted by Arthur. He’s also placed Garth’s baby in a tank of water that he starts superheating, which isn’t exactly what happened to Aquababy, but it’s enough to be a very pointed parallel.
Garth manages to control the temperature of the water enough to protect the baby. In the chaos of the fight, the tank breaks and Orm flees. The Arthur we’ve always known would chase the bad guy.
Tumblr media
But now he stays to help find the baby! Awww. I’m genuinely emotional about this, you guys - the rift between Arthur and Garth that began with Aquababy’s deal never really healed properly, and this is a huge step in that direction.
Not that Arthur isn’t HUGELY PROBLEMATIC, because he promptly declares in front of the UN, god, and everyone that since Cerdia’s queen is dead, Atlantis is annexing Cerdia as a colony. See, Charlanda kept her people poor and uneducated, so they can’t possibly self-govern, so really, Arthur’s doing them a favor! This is portrayed as a good and heroic move. What the fuck.
Tumblr media
THAT SECOND PANEL IS TOO CUTE. ILLEGAL.
Also, “for all practical purposes, our prince”? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN. IS HE A PRINCE OR ISN’T HE. IS HE THE HEIR OR ISN’T HE. ARTHUR EXPLAIN. Also lol at Arthur being like “I’m afraid it’s time I put you to work on official business,” both because that is literally the only thing Garth wants in the entire world and because of what the official business is:
Tumblr media
Yeah, he wanted Garth to name his baby after Cerdia so he could Lion King-style wave him around and make the Cerdians stop being mad about being colonized. Both Arthur’s pose and Cerdian’s face here upset me greatly. The only good thing about this page is Dolphin’s outfit.
There are about five issues of the run after this, but they’re not significant, plot-wise - Arthur and Mera go to Skartaris, Garth gets kidnapped by aliens, yadda yadda. This last page is pretty indicative of the way this series ends: with Arthur sitting confidently on the throne of an empire, Mera by his side, a dynasty implied to be secure with Garth and Cerdian in the (presumed???) line of succession, allies galore.
And the second the 2003 series begins, that will all promptly be well and truly fucked.
Next up: Said fuckening, featuring the Obsidian Age, yet another deposing, and Arthur’s magical water hand!

Exhibit Ch - Your honor they love each other! (fuffy)
This is a pro-fuffy BTVS rewatch series. Kendra Appreciation Post! Exhibit Ch is a bonus / catchup review about Scott Hope, Kendra, and a few non-Faith episode recos. Long post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Remember how I wanted Scott Hope to get one more episode so Buffy could prioritize Faith over him? Scott is literally never seen again after 3.03. I wanna review Scott Hope. In exhibit B.10 I mentioned that Scott does seem particularly insightful. Here’s a text montage of all the great Scott moments. Imagine “I will remember you” playing in the background.
“Uh, I'm sorry. I'm a bad liar. It's not good for the soul.” (3.03)
“You're friends with Buffy, right?” - to Faith (3.03)
“Faith has been telling me tall tales.” (3.03)
“my mom says that therapy can be completely helpful.” - to Buffy (3.04)
“I hope you realize I don't actually know these people.” - jokingly about Pete and Debbie (3.04)
“It's just that you never really know what's going on inside somebody.” - about Pete and Debbie after they both die (3.04) Y’all he realized he didn’t actually know them.
“Before we were going out, you seemed so full of life, like a force of nature. Now you just seem distracted all the time, and… I’m really sorry” - dumping Buffy (3.05) Buffy agrees she has been distracted.
2. Scott - in what little we see of him - is very honest. He says he’s a bad liar, he realizes Faith’s stories are at least exaggerated, he’s pro-therapy. And he’s not just honest but he verbalizes it. The way he dumps Buffy, Scott’s so fucking honest. Scott is mentioned again in the show 3 times, twice more in S3 and then once in S7.
3. Remember Buffy’s traumatic therapy experience in 3.04? Well her next therapy session is to Holden the psych major and new vamp she very vaguely remembers from high school. In 7.07 (Conversations with Dead People) Holden says: “Scott Hope said you were gay… He says that about every girl he breaks up with. And then last year, big surprise, he comes out.” Buffy acts surprised at hearing this news, that he called her gay.
4. Granted, I could buy that Scott was repressed and gay in high school. But just because he came out eventually doesn’t mean he was lying. Also the “he says that about every girl” bit sounds OOC to me. Scott was insightful and honest when we saw him. I think this is the show queer-panicking again. “Oh no wait, Buffy can’t be gay! Or queer! Uhm….. yeah let’s add that Scott says that about every girl, oh yeah because he’s actually gay and therefore a lying liar.” Homophobic much? Silly show. Also am I picking and choosing to fit my argument? A little bit.
5. So in summary, Scott Hope is insightful and honest and calls Buffy gay, aka calls Buffy queer. She is so repressed / panicking that she is visually surprised by this in 7.07. Oh Buffy.
Alright, enough about Scott, let’s talk about Kendra!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Kendra is the Jamaican slayer that appears briefly in S2. The BTVS writers room was super white. There are several things they don’t do a great job with IMO, including the LA homeless scenes (3.01), queerness (in general and also being bi just doesn’t exist?), judaism, and sexual assault (*rages at multiple epis*). Sometimes the show is a little misogynistic (but not as bad as Angel, holy fuck that show) and a little racist. Or a lot. The racial diversity of the show is laughable, I mean late 90s California? Even in the LA episode (Anne 3.01) LA is just - mostly white? *cackles* (As a palate cleanser here’s a nice gifset featuring POC characters on BTVS and ATS.)
7. Interesting Black characters are given the short shrift, including Mr. Trick in S3. Kendra deserved better but at least we got a little glimpse of her. If you’re following along at home and but also trying to limit your BTVS intake, I recommend the following non-Faith-appearance catchup episodes: 2.09 (Kendra appears), 2.10 (Kendra heavy), 2.11 (the Ted episode), 2.21 (Becoming Part 1 - Kendra re-appears), 2.22 (Becoming Part 2 - to finish off the season). And 3.01 honestly, because limiting intake can be difficult, LOL.
8. ifeveristoday lays it out in this good short post on Kendra’s role / lore on the show, and how it could be better.
9. herinsectreflections explains Kendra is not one of Buffy’s shadow selves. This gifset by fuffygifs shows the scene parallel.
10. Kendra locks up Angel. Delight in her power over him, the way she laughs at him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. I vividly remember the scene where Buffy slow-motion runs through the school, it’s in the show openers. But what I had forgotten until this rewatch was that it’s her running to get back to everyone in the library, after her chat with Angelus in the cemetery, and she finds Kendra dead. (Because of Dru’s hypnosis powers.) My memory of the slow-mo was that Buffy’s so badass, but now it’s tinged with sadness bc she was trying and then fails to help / save her friends, including Kendra. Although really the only long-term damage is Kendra. *grumble*
12. OK the main scene I want to review is when Buffy and Kendra say goodbye in 2.10. Buffy calls herself a freak, which is a real insult in her mind. Kendra reassures her “not the only freak.” And then Buffy goes to hug Kendra, but Kendra doesn’t hug. So Buffy doesn’t. Can you imagine where this didn’t happen, like Kendra is OK with hugs. And then when Buffy meets Faith she hugs her at some point (not right away). Gah! They never hug right? Or Buffy isn't feeling like she caused Kendra's death and she's more open with Faith? (spuffygifs has the full gifset)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I gotta admit they did have chemistry.
Tumblr media
OK, a smattering of links to Kendra gifsets I found:
nerd4music
dailybtvs
original andremichaux
andremichaux with tags people left
13. OK, a few thoughts on 3.01 Anne. Already unrealistic when it aired (Buffy somehow affords a studio apt on a waitress salary?) it’s achingly unrealistic now, in terms of money. Like Buffy would need 3 waitressing-type jobs and she’d still have 4 roomates in a craaap 2 BR apt that was falling apart.
14. SMG is giving a master class in acting in SO much of BTVS. The moment when she revolts is brilliant. Check it here (credit to deansmom and harrietvane and isagrimorie) proof that SMG made the acting choice, that it wasn’t that detailed in the script. (read the prev tags too, all of this is brilliant) Also we already know Buffy but this introduction of herself is great, on par with Faith-introducing-herself levels here. (the whole deansmom gifset and tags really sets the mood pre-"aggressive chipper shit talker" Buffy introducing herself)
Tumblr media
I am not great at finding gifs on tumblr. Here are some bonus ones for prev exhibits:
Faith accidentally punching Buffy in 3.04. (Eliza apparently actually punched SMG IRL)
Faith shooting her shot in 3.05
Buffy’s unsure reaction in 3.05
No rating for this exhibit bc there’s no Faith. (Exhibit C had a they love each other rating of 2 out of 5.) Next exhibit will cover episode 3.07 Revelations. Exhibit Ch has been submitted, the prosecution rests for the day.

List 5 favourite shows (in no particular order) and answer questions accordingly. Thanks for the tag, @spineless-lobster !! <33
• Legends of Tomorrow
• Good Omens
• WWDITS
• Yonderland
• BBC Ghosts
1. Who is your favourite character in 2?
Aziraphale and Crowley. Yeah, they can’t be separated.
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?
Rip Hunter.
3. What's your favourite episode of 4?
Elders ‘11.
4. What is your favourite season of 5?
Can’t decide if it’s 2 or 3. Combining their best hits would make THEE ultimate season.
5. What's your favourite relationship in 3?
Nadja & Laszlo or The Baron & The Sire.
6. Who is your anti relationship in 2?
Madame Tracy and Shadwell, sorry.
7. How long have you watched 1?
I think I saw a clip from Crisis on Earth-X back in 2017 or 2018, but I actually started watching in 2020 when I was still watching Flash.
8. How did you become interested in 3?
Influenced by some mutuals and the film, so I tuned in right after s3 ended and actually contributed to the fandom during s4.
9. Who is your favourite actor in 4?
Throughout the series, it’s Martha and Larry.
I love Debbie and how Martha portrayed Imperatrix, I just wished she had a few more roles other than the two just like the other five (I think it’s a costuming thing but I digress).
I love Larry both as writer and an actor, and especially for making Ho-Tan and Kendall real.
But like, if actors in general, it’s Jim.
10. Which show do you prefer 1, 2 or 5?
Nooo, I can’t possibly choose!!
11. Which show have you seen more episodes of 1 or 3?
I mean, LoT has more seasons, but I have rewatched WWDITS a very Normal amount.
12. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Can’t tell if I want to be Debbie and Ho-Tan or be with both of them.
13. How would you kill off your favourite character in 5?
I mean, they’re all already dead, so...
I’m weirdly satisfied with Pat and Humphrey’s death, like obv they didn’t deserve it but I wouldn’t have it any other way? Kitty and Cap’s death aren’t revealed yet, but I hope Kitty’s didn’t cause her much pain bc my girl’s been through enough and I hope Cap’s either got the funniest or most earth-shattering one.
Apart from that, I don’t think I will be able to handle another ghost being sucked off (except for some, uh, cases 👀)
As for Alison and Mike, I’d rather have them die due to old age.
14. Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Yeah, and it’s called BBC Ghosts. (No but seriously, I think Yonderland might be able to fix the vamps. They would love the Parvuli.)
15. Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
I haven’t seen the show in ages and they’re all pairable, but Astra and Kendra probably? Charlie and Spooner? (I’m just spitballing, idk if they’d work)
16. Overall, which show has the better cast, 3 or 5?
Harvey and Matt are the only ones I love from that cast for reasons, so it’s gonna be the cast of Ghosts.
tagging @autisticharrywells @bluntbeard @larryrickard @starwendy @horuuuuu @hedgehog-png @ghostlyheart @rubyanjel @zaritarazi and everyone who’d like a go!! <33

In Defense of a Mickey-less Season 6
people hate me already, don’t they? lol.
so, some caveats up front so this *doesn’t* get immediate hate: I love Mickey. I love Gallavich. None of that should be in question. But I watched Shameless for the first time about a month ago and have been diving into the fandom since then and have noticed that Ian gets a lot of undeserved hate. Which confused me at first, until I realized just how much people loved Mickey. I totally get the love for Mickey. But what I don’t get is how people can love Gallavich while still holding a lot of hate for Ian, especially for things that happen in seasons 6-9, and then also 10-11.
I just do not get it. To me, loving a ship means you love both people in the ship. You emphasize with both people’s struggles. I don’t think you can truly love a ship if you actively hate or are always punishing one of the characters in that ship.
And nothing gets Ian more hate than Season 6, a season i absolutely adore because of Ian’s journey.
So, this is a defense of why I actually like that Mickey isn’t in season 6. I mean, in a perfect world, Noel Fisher didn’t leave the show, but that’s not what happened, and if you’re gonna engage with media, then you engage with the media that you’re presented with. This was very cathartic to write for me. I just kept running into fic after fic that kept writing Ian to punish him, and I just could not take it anymore lol. Sorry, folks, but this is gonna be long.
THE BREAKUP
To talk about Season 6, we actually need to start with the breakup scene in the Season 5 finale.
Every time I watch the breakup scene, I always feel different about it. Let’s set aside the BTS reasons it happened: Noel Fisher was leaving the show -- there’s nothing we can do about that.
at first, the breakup doesn’t make sense: after Ian spent that time with Monica, it seemed that he realized every word coming out of Monica’s mouth was bullshit, and his journey with her in 5x12 was necessary for him to see what his life could be like before he eventually goes home. but then watching that entire episode again changed my mind a little, if only to play devil’s advocate for a sec: Ian breaking up with Mickey right after leaving Monica does make sense.
In the scene outside the trailer, Monica goes on a monologue to Ian about how much she loves Walter and how people like her and Ian can and deserve to be happy. Ian heard what Monica was saying and basically thought if that’s the kind of love her and him are capable of, then Mickey doesn’t deserve that kind of delusional, fucked up love. For the past few episodes, Ian’s been hearing people say how much like Monica he is, and now it’s fully cemented in his brain.
we can hold two seemingly contradicting truths in ourselves: Ian saw that an unmedicated life with Monica was a bad idea, but still broke up with Mickey upon his return because he didn’t like taking the meds, and Mickey has been advocating for them since the psych hospital.
It’s also important to remember that Ian is unmedicated here. He’s just been emotionally manipulated by Monica, and has gone through trauma after trauma in season 5. He’s reeling, and scared, and still in denial about the diagnosis, and as far as he knows, Mickey believes he’s sick. He doesn’t like Mickey overcompensating caring for him, because that means confronting that there is something wrong, and he’s still in denial about that. So, he pushes him away.
THE MEDS
A common complaint I’ve seen is how it doesn’t make sense why Ian broke up with Mickey because he didn’t want to take his meds, and then when season 6 starts, he’s on his meds. And people are mad at Ian for that.
Well, there’s a bit of a time jump. Don’t know how much of one since Shameless timelines never make sense -- Debbie isn’t that pregnant but it’s clear some time has passed. It’s safe to make some assumptions that something happened in between seasons 5 and 6 to make Ian take his meds. And seeing how much Fiona is on him a lot in the season 6 premiere episode, Fiona somehow convinced him to start them.
And this makes sense. If Ian wasn’t on his meds in season 6 then it’s just a rehash of the beginning of season 5, and we don’t want that. That’s repetitive. Season 6 is a season for healing for Ian, and we need a starting point that isn’t Season 5′s starting point. Having him be on the meds but still disillusioned about it, his life, his diagnosis -- that’s a different but interesting place to start him.
THE PRISON SCENE -- 6x01
Oh, I don’t even know how to explain how much I love the prison scene. It’s bittersweet and sad, but there’s so much love there. And even though it ends with Ian and Mickey still broken up, it doesn’t feel like goodbye. Granted, I viewed this scene for the first time just a month ago, with the privilege of binge-watching and already knowing that Ian and Mickey get married in Season 10.
It is just so important to remember that in this scene, Ian is still very much healing. He’s going through a moment of discovering who he is again, and recovering from a very traumatic 1-2 years where he didn’t understand his mind and his emotions. So he’s distant with Mickey, but he still cares about him. His demeanor cracks. When Svet offered to pay him to visit Mickey, it was a way of distancing his emotions from the baggage that came with recent events. And seriously, it’s not like Svet twisted his arm. She offered 25, then he cracked at 50. Boy wanted to see Mickey real bad, ya’ll.
The lie is such a tender moment. I view it as an out for both of them. Mickey didn’t give Ian enough time to truly answer before he asked for the lie, leaving any answer that Ian gives in question. But it’s what Mickey needed to hear, and it allowed Ian to provide that for Mickey without actually promising to wait, because that’s unrealistic.
Another common complaint about this scene I see around is how Ian isn’t appreciative of what Mickey did for Ian -- getting revenge on Sammi and going to prison for him. Sigh ... I hate that argument because it doesn’t take into account Ian’s feelings at all. There’s also a consent issue here ... Ian never asked Mickey to get back at Sammi and he certainly never asked Mickey to go to prison for him.
When the trauma happens to a person, it’s not up to someone else to decide the best way to deal with the person who inflicted it. And this was a trauma -- Ian confided in Sammi in a moment of vulnerability. She helped him with his hand, told her about the army, and for the first time, acknowledged that he was mentally ill. We know he’s been having delusions and paranoia about the MPs coming for him too, so when they finally did, it was his worst nightmare come true. The way it happens is tragic as well -- ambushed in his own home, tackled and dragged out of his house.
Ian deserved a chance to confront Sammi on his own about that, but Mickey (and Debbie) took that decision away from him while he was in military prison, physically incapable of doing anything about it at the time.
IAN & CALEB
Caleb is ... fine. I didn’t hate him. He started off okay, and it was interesting watching Ian navigate a new relationship that wasn’t with old guys and wasn’t with Mickey. And, it led directly to Ian getting his EMT job, which I love, love, love. But ultimately he was kind of boring.
However, there is one scene I want to talk about: the dinner date scene:
This one gets Ian a lot of hate too because Ian tells Caleb that he doesn’t know how to be on a date and explains that his last boyfriend used his fists and insults to communicate more than anything. Which, is true. Ian’s stating a fact. He’s also clearly only focusing on the beginning of his and Mickey’s relationship, when that kind of stuff did happen more. This is a fair thing to do when you’re trying to date someone new -- you focus on the bad, because it’s easier to move on that way. He also seems vaguely amused by it. Caleb, as an outsider, is going to think it sounds like domestic abuse. Who wouldn’t!!! But who cares about what Caleb thinks -- this scene isn’t actually about how Ian is on a date with a new boyfriend, it’s strictly about showing the differences between Caleb and Ian.
Caleb is a bit pretentious -- he orders for Ian without asking what he wants, immediately writes Ian off when he’s not engaging like Caleb wants him to, and judges Ian’s past relationship based off a one sentence anecdote. I watch this scene and am just so struck by how uncomfortable Ian looks and how Caleb can’t pick up on that, and doesn’t really offer any empathy for Ian’s inexperience. He also makes a snide comment when he has to leave about how well the date is going, after Ian explained that he’s trying but doesn’t really know how to be on a date.
The only reason I like Caleb at all is that he encourages Ian to become an EMT, and I really love EMT!Ian.
IAN “BADMOUTHING” MICKEY
I feel like this is the difference between hearing and listening. The dinner scene in the above section we already went over, but let’s talk about another one:
Mandy returns in 6x09. There’s a scene back at the Gallagher house where Ian tells Mandy about Caleb. His line goes “I miss Mickey, but this new guy’s nice.” He also gets hate for this.
But I think that sentence is actually two statements. He misses Mickey. But the new guy is nice. Meaning, no matter how much he misses Mickey, Caleb’s nice enough to try and go for it. I wanted to go over this scene because I’ve seen people claim that Ian doesn’t miss Mickey in Season 6, but he literally says it right here.
Right before this, Mandy does say: “An upgrade from my brother,” but that’s coming from Mandy, not Ian. Mandy and Mickey never really had a close relationship -- I always wish they did, but I guess the writers weren’t interested in that so whatever. But her saying that isn’t really out of the realm of possibility -- it makes sense for her to say that.
Any other time throughout season 6 that Ian “badmouths” Mickey, he’s not actually. It’s always under the guise of trying to get over a bad break up, and that ex still being in prison. He’s trying to move on, gain stability, and lead a healthy life. People do that after break ups. The “I miss Mickey” line is the clearest indication that Ian still loves Mickey, and he’s still really sad about how things went down. I don’t know how you can watch that scene and not hear it -- Cameron Monaghan delivers that line perfectly.
There’s a weird exchange in 6x07 at the wedding where Ian talks about the last wedding he was at, and very bluntly refers to what happened in 3x06. Caleb laughs at it. Idk why this exchange happens in this episode -- I hate it. Caleb’s awful for laughing, but something I think people forget is that Ian experienced the trauma from 3x06 too -- yes, it’s different, but it’s a trauma for him as well that he’s allowed to talk about. I hate that this is the only time Ian or Mickey talks about 3x06. Still, I can see why he talks about it -- they’re at a wedding, and the last wedding he was at was Mickey’s -- he sort of says it all with this hysterical huff, like holy shit that happened and I’m just now remembering it did.
EMT IAN AND HIS JOURNEY TO SELF-ACCEPTANCE
This is why Season 6 Ian is so good. It’s a great season of a solo journey to self-acceptance (although I definitely could have done with out Caleb). It’s also why we needed to start Season 6 with Ian back on the meds but disillusioned still about life, his diagnosis.
It’s a season with an Ian plot line I’ve been waiting for since Season 1. Since the beginning, Ian’s character has felt pushed to the side a lot, especially amongst the Gallagher family. His scenes always seemed shorter, and he never seemed to have as many of them. And when he did, it was always about relationships and the guys he was with. Of course, he did get a lot of focus in 4 and 5, but to be perfectly honest, Season 4 never gave us Ian’s perspective, and Season 5 only gave it sparingly. In season 6, he finally gets a storyline that’s about bettering his life in some way, and it works so well because of all of the trauma from seasons 3, 4, and 5. I truly think Ian needed the time away from Mickey to learn how to be himself again, and find a new path after the army fell through. And nothing speaks to this more than the scene in 6x12 when Ian fights for his job.
Ian’s been fighting his diagnosis since he got out of the hospital. Even when Fiona and the rest of the Gallaghers kept comparing him to Monica, even when he was swinging baseball bats at Debbie’s head, and even when Mickey was caring and supportive, he was fighting it. And I don’t blame him.
As well-intentioned as everyone was, yes including Mickey, I never got the sense anyone gave Ian the time to come to terms with the diagnosis. To them, it was clear how much help Ian needed, and the solution seemed simple: take the medication, and things would be better. But it wasn’t that simple. And Ian didn’t get the proper time to come to terms with that in Season 5.
But Season 6 gives him that time. He struggles with it throughout the whole season -- he’s scared to tell Caleb he’s bipolar, he begins the season believing he’s only good enough to be a janitor now, hell, he ends up looking over a bridge. The show plays that scene kind of ambiguously but we all know what was happening there. Ian was suicidal. But even every time he says he’s bipolar throughout Season 6, he’s always saying it like he’s distancing himself from it still. Like, yep, everyone’s saying I am and I’m taking medication for it so I guess I am. That “I miss Mickey” scene also features Ian believing that Caleb will eventually leave him because of the bipolar.
But when Ian advocates for himself in 6x12 in order to get his job back, that’s when he’s truly accepted himself as someone with bipolar disorder, and that it’s not his fault, he didn’t do anything to deserve it, it’s just a disorder he has. Here, he’s finally setting aside all of the self-hate, insecurities, and doubts he had right after the diagnosis, which directly led to him breaking up with Mickey. A truly remarkable season of learning how to love yourself again. He needed to figure that shit out on his own before he could really let anyone else in. It’s after this he finally brings Caleb fully into the fold. And while Caleb was there this season and told Ian he should fight for his job, I don’t really think he matters in the long run -- Ian still did this for himself.
ALTERNATE SEASON 6
Of course, I would have loved it too if Mickey was in Season 6. But I still think Ian needed to go on a self-healing, self-acceptance journey by himself, without Mickey. I think this still could have happened with Mickey in the season, because if Ian is on his own journey, that means Mickey would be on his own journey as well.
They would have come back together slowly, and gently, but with all of the love and understanding in the world. They wouldn’t punish each other. They would acknowledge each other’s feelings without any blame. They would heal, individually, and then together.
But it didn’t happen that way. I love what we got anyway.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I really needed to write it all out. I’m sure there’s a lot I still missed. I might do something similar for seasons 7-11, because Ian still gets a lot hate there as well, and while there’s some not great stuff in those seasons, I still really love Ian Gallagher, and he deserves some compassion.

OUAT Thoughts Pt.73--Episodes 17-18
I have watched through S7E18; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for anyone further behind than I am.
—Maybe doing shots while trying to protect yourself against a killer isn’t the best idea. *raises eyebrow at Zelena*
—How can she even consider marrying Chad? I realize he knows now that she has a gnarly past, but he doesn’t have a clue about the fairytale stuff, and the odds of her being able to either live with that detail omitted or actually convince Chad to believe it are pretty slim.
—The idea of fairytale characters leaving their communities to be regular people in the regular world is awful. It’s an unfortunate case of the magic being sucked out of life. It’s fine when it’s one of Storybrooke curses and it’s going to be fixed, and everyone stays together, but when it’s a different curse and I don’t know how it’s going to end and people are actually leaving it just loses a little bit of the sparkle.
—That made no sense, but if you understand the feeling I was trying to convey, here is a gold star 🫴🌟 You deserve it.
—So Zelena burning Hansel’s arms was a greater offense to him than Drizella and Gothel being responsible for Gretel’s death. Alright.
—You know, I don’t like Hansel, but when he snarked on Henry’s lack of belief, considering his Truest Believer status, I couldn’t help agreeing. It’s about time somebody said it.
—Ngl, episode 18 was kind of immensely upsetting. I feel like I’m Alice or Rumple, but I haven’t found my Robin or Belle. Like Alice, I have good days and I have pretty crappy days, but I don’t have a person in my life I know is going to see the best in me and love me on the bad days. A big part of it is that Alice is not too good at what I think is considered normal communication/conversation with other people, and in real life I stumble over words a lot more than I do on here, and I’m not good at figuring out what to say to begin with, and I’m still waiting to find somebody who thinks I’m worth it anyway.
—Now that I’ve been a big Debbie Downer, on to the other stuff!
—Seeing Rumple in full Dark One mode, very clearly a broken man, is one of the saddest moments in the entire show. He’s historically been one of the most confident, secure, bright people in the show, and now all he’s got is the madness.
—Also, him choosing to continue his weary existence so Alice and Robin could be happy together? That made me cry too. Bless him.
—Robin being the messenger between Alice and Hook is one of the sweetest things I can think of. Very good girlfriend.
—Hook accepting that Rumple had changed also made me cry. Man, these two episodes were killer. But he didn’t see the entire span of Rumple’s life, like original Hook did. All he had was the word of other people, which he didn’t trust, and a singe noble act for his daughter, and honestly that being the thing to convince Hook that Rumple was alright is amazing.
—I’m gonna need him to wake up, though, because A) I miss him, and 2) he needs to be reunited with Alice fr.
—The friendship bracelet thing is awesome. Alice and Robin are the best.
—Alice taking care of Rumple in the New Enchanted Forest, and them being friends in Hyperion Heights, is now a sucker punch to the feels. Sure, she’s the Guardian, so she’s compelled to guard him as the Dark One, but there’s a more personal dimension to their relationship that I love. They were friends before, and then he sacrificed his happy ending to make sure she got hers, and it’s absolutely lovely.
—Rumple’s happy ending being death is terribly sad. Everybody else has happy endings that seem a bit implausible or unattainable at times, but they always involve living to love someone.
—It’s totally unnecessary, but I love that Alice corrected Robin from ‘mom and pop bookstore’ to ‘pop and pop bookstore.’ Did they have to put that line in there? No. Does it really mean anything? Again, no, but its casualness and the fact that it isn’t made out to mean anything big or grand is v swaggy to me. This season kinda makes me wish the first seasons had been a little bit queerer.
—It’s fun how Hyperion Heights reversed Alice and Robin’s roles in regards to how widely-traveled they are. It’s fun to watch that knowing more than the characters do.
—I’m a little bit mad at Rumple for taking the magic, because I don’t want Henry to die, but if Regina makes me choose between her and Rumple I’m gonna back Rumple. If he’s got one ride-or-die, I’m it; if he’s got none, I’m dead.
—Kinda wish we had gotten Facilier a little bit earlier, not in the show, because I think he works well with the other characters on the board right now, but in the season, because he’s shaping up to be a pretty intimidating guy, and I’m not sure I think his full potential will be explored.
—Not backing him, though, because he’s in direct opposition to Rumple, and as stated above there is nobody I will choose over him.
—I disagree with some of the personality choices they’ve made for Henry in this season (although I think I understand the narrative reasons) but I think they did an excellent job casting Henry. On a scale of “did they time travel to get the original actor at the right age” to “what the hell were they thinking,” this guy lands right on “I would believe these actors were brothers.” His expressions are spot-on.
—Seeing how much Rumple and Zelena and Hook want Alice and Robin to be happy together makes me happy.
—I’m starting to have the sads about being so close to the end of the show. I don’t adore this season the way I adore the other six, but the end of it is the end of the show that I love, and the end of the stories of the characters I love. Plus, I’m pretty sure Rumple is going to die at the end, and I don’t think I’m emotionally buff enough to handle that.
—To cheer ourselves up, my mom and I are now listening to some of the songs from the musical episode, because that is our happy place. It’s actually low-key working, because how can I be sad with the gorgeous sound of Hook’s voice?

shameless unpopular opinions:
(i post these a lot but now here’s a ton of them together because as you can tell, i am very opinionated lol)
season 10/11 have a lot of gallavich in them, and they’re so fucking amazing in those seasons, but 10/11 are definitely not the best gallavich seasons because they’re a bit more boring (not very boring but kind of), the best gallavich seasons were 3, 4, 5, and 7.
fiona’s worst season was season 7, and that one scene at the table where she asked everyone to put her at the bottom of their emergency contact lists/told them that the squirrel fund was returning wasn’t “iconic” it sucked and was literally her neglecting carl and debbie. her best season’s were season’s 1 and 2 (i like her in every season those were just the best).
season 6 carl/white boy carl was awful. he was sometimes funny, yeah, but carl was the best in literally every other season but that, especially in 1, 3, 4, 7, and 11.
i get that he was closeted and had to hide his feelings away, but mickey treated ian like shit in seasons 1-3. but in 4-11 he (mostly) treated him amazingly.
lip is so much worse than debbie.
sheila shouldn’t have dated jody and she shouldn’t have taken hymie.
ian and debbie were the only one’s that monica loved, but really only ian.
frank did more damage to monica than she did to him.
kev and v weren’t ready for kids.
i wish that sierra and lip had ended up together, but tami was the only girlfriend of lip’s who didn’t let lip walk all over her. regardless, i think she was a rebound who he stayed with just because of her pregnancy.
they should’ve killed svetlana and jimmy-steve off instead of giving them stupid endings.
thinking realistically, yev is probably not mickey’s kid. but thinking with shameless logic, he probably is.
debbie isn’t the best character necessarily, but she is one of the top 5 (or maybe 3) best written shameless characters and people don’t awknolege her enough.
every. single. character. deserved better. even your least favorite characters, like sammi or karen or debbie.
chuckie deserves literally no hate. the thing people hate most about him is his mother, but that’s unfair because literally every shameless character i can think of off the top of my head has mommy issues.
sandy was in the wrong in the break up with her and debbie.
debbie should’ve gotten some help during/after her pregnancy. yes, actions have consequences, blah blah blah, but she was still just a kid.
lip fucking sucked in season 11 and i just wanted to give debbie a big hug the entire time. idc about what she did, fuck lip for trying to sell/pretty much destroying, a house that he had no rights to whatsoever.
liam was treated like absolute dog shit.
no way in hell are fiona and lip straight. they’re both bi in my mind.

The way we don’t see Brian kiss another guy throughout the entire show that isn’t Justin after they lay down the rules 🤧 (I’m excluding Michael because it wasn’t romantic or sexual)
Hey anon!
Listen I don't think we appreciate this enough he made a promise to Justin and then was just like until death... I shall never kiss anyone but you.
This is was what I was saying before about how there's so many layers to him and why he is so fascinating to me not only as my fave but also on relatable level. To have the juxtaposition of a character who because of his traumatic upbringing and life experiences is so averse to love and the notion of it and yet he has such a huge capacity to love and displays it frequently but not to receive it. When he loves someone he loves them just like Justin with the rules.
It's so relatable to me coming from trauma that it's easier to show kindness and love to others but absolutely reject it in regards to myself and we see that with Brian a lot. He'll go to the ends of the earth for the people he cares about even hurting himself in process but actually accepting gratitude or praise for it he struggles with. It's not that he hates love but it's that he's scared of it :(
Debbie said it most poignantly in 4x10 when she's talking to God about his cancer and says the biggest organ he has is his heart. To have a character who is seemingly so selfish on the outside be the one who cares too much. The biggest examples are with his parents the people who hurt him the most and made him the way he was and he still showed kindness to them when they didn't deserve it.
It's why I will always be bitter at the ending they gave him he was such a complex character who we saw evolve and come full circle. To leave him all alone at the end because he once again sacrificed his own happiness for others was cruel.

Bingo. And the worst part is their complete lack of self awareness. I don't remember any instances in the films when he gave and she took? I almost want to rewatch them now but meh lol
Oh yes i do also get put off by the oversexualization it's so try hardish. The two flirted quite often in the series but I see people go way overboard with them to the point of lunacy.
Oh it's not that I necessarily dislike the 90s version, I just found them to be a bit over the top, overrated and not worth all the hype they generate year round. Raul Julia was just putting on his best John Astin immitation yet people call him the greatest Gomez of all time? I think Angelica Huston looked okay in the part but I don't get why Millennias and Gen Z crowned her as their Mortisha when Carolyns wonderful and decidedly more...ahem upbeat performance is right there. Christina Ricci turned an adorable and morose little girl into an unlikable psycho in training. Christopher Lloyd's Fester is a disgusting perv. I could go on. As far as i'm concerned, granny was the only character in the movies that did a great job that honored the og actress
Yep.
I think a lot of these shippers wish they themselves had someone slavishly obsess over them like the most important person in the world, so they’re giddy to see it get validated by the AF. I strongly suspect it’s why they call Herman x Lily “boring” or unhealthy, because heaven forbid BOTH parties have a need for affection and attention while simultaneously respecting each other’s independence and hobbies outside of their spouse. I get a lot of husbands do not give as much as they take irl but Tish just acts like she inherently deserves to be worshipped while never having to reciprocate, and Gomez seems fine with the arrangement. That’s not a relationship based on mutual love and respect. (Seriously, I feel like therapy would do him good... Remember when he had a complete breakdown in the movie? Is he manic depressive? Anxious? I’m worried for you, Gomez!) I don’t understand how these are usually the same people hating on couples like Disney or rom coms or whatever when they’re no different, definitely no worse, than Tish x Gomez who are completely codependent unlike those ships.
TBH I do like Raul, he’s talented and he did try to make his Gomez relatively close to Jon’s which I respect as someone who prefers the old show, but I don’t disagree, people act like he invented Gomez himself. Anjelica being so loved makes sense when you think about it, Carolyn’s Tish is pretty much a normal wealthy housewife in terms of personality- docile, prim, proper, ladylike. People don’t respect these qualities anymore (when there’s nothing wrong with any of that). While AH’s Tish is still prim and proper to a T, she is also noticably colder and snarkier and downright catty at times. Add in a worshipful rich husband and children she doesn’t have to raise* and she’s every “I’m not like those stupid preppy girls” goth girl’s dream. Carolyn’s Tish was quite different from the comic’s but ultimately she’s still nice and friendly so I prefer her. Do goths need to always be mean or something?
Fester was never my favorite character, and while I don’t really have an issue with him in the movies (besides the perv part you mentioned), I’ve actually never liked Christopher Lloyd as him, as good an actor as he is. Christina Ricci was a very talented child actor but  my gosh, her Wednesday is honestly one of my least favorite characters ever and the whole reason we have a generation of girls who think they’re interesting for hating pink or fashion or whatnot. It’s fair to say the OG kids didn’t have much personality but I’ll take that over being a murderous little bully. (And of course, the perky suburban camp kids and attractive blonde Debbie are so over-the-top evil the movie practically forces you to side with the Addams, which is a message I don’t like.) Pugsley I guess is fine. I forget he’s there sometimes lol. Same for Lurch and Thing. Totally agree on Grandmama, she’s always been my favorite character and Carol Kane is hilarious. Cousin Itt also deserves a mention for being far more open-minded than the rest of his relatives are.

hiii elliot <333 shameless for the ask game ?? ive been thinking about picking it up again <3
hiiii ethan <3 yes yes yes of course, give me an excuse to talk about shameless, i don’t know how much you care about spoilers, so i’ll try to be as vague as possible
my favorite female character
fiona! i love her with all my heart, she sacrificed so much for her siblings. she’s so much more of a parent than her actual parents ever were, and her relationship with both frank and monica is so complex and interesting, there are scenes where she confronts monica that just make me cry. and she makes mistakes, of course she does, she’s human, and that doesn’t make me love her any less (she does take a weird, very out of character turn in s8 and 9, but i mostly blame that on the writers messing up the later seasons)
my favorite male character
definitely mickey. you do not understand the level of protectiveness i feel over him. he is extremely intelligent in his own way, and i feel like a lot of the time people don’t appreciate that. he’s funny, he’s loving, he’s an asshole, but the good kind. he goes through so many bad situations and a lot of times i just want to hug him and punch everyone who treats him like shit (including ian in s3). mickey deserves all the happiness
my favorite book/season/etc
welll i mostly don’t remember what happens in which season tbh, so i can’t really answer this. shoutout to season 1 for being fucking awesome though, and honorary mention to season 4 for breaking my heart
my favorite episode (if its a tv show)
you want me to chose?
mickey’s first episode (s1 ep3). we get mandy, we get mickey being all dramatic, we get fiona, debbie and vee being resourceful as fuck
season 4 finale. it’s been built up to, and you know it’s coming, but when it actually happens. damn that was heartbreaking
season 7 finale. i don’t think i have to explain
my favorite cast member
i don’t particularly care for the cast, so i’m just going to say emmy rossum
my favorite ship
i bet you can guess… you’re right, gallavich! ian and mickey are just… yeah. yeahhhh. they love each other so much. they’ve been together (though on and off) for ten years. the things mickey would do—the things mickey does—for ian. and the way ian just lights up whenever mickey’s around. their relationship is complicated and messy and they break apart, but always find a way back to each other. AND THEY’RE HUSBANDS
a character I'd die defending
ian actually. yeah he messes up quite a lot, but so does everyone else. and i do realise that some of the shit he pulls is worth criticising. give me any situation and i have an argument ready to defend him. yes, even for his actions in season 3b. even though i’m pissed off at him. i’m allowed, no one else is
a character I just can't sympathize with
terry milkovich. i hate him i hate him i hate him i hate him i hate him i hate him i hate him
a character I grew to love
lip. i didn’t particularly like him in the beginning, but he grew on me. also he is the only character whose storyline i have been consistently invested in in all the seasons
my anti otp
there are actually a lot of ships i dislike, but i think i gotta say ian and that literal adult from season 1, that was all manners of messed up, i don’t think i even have to explain that

Fiona's Love Interests Ranked:
Jimmy: S tier for Seasons 1-3, F tier for seasons 4&5. At first he was fun and had a lot of moxie and was incredibly witty, he was great with Liam Carl and Debbie and they liked him a lot. His older brother dynamic with Lip was also really solid, and I liked watching them work together as a little petty crime duo. It was clear Fiona liked him a lot too and genuinely liked spending time with him, despite all her stubborness and protests about not needing him. It was also cool how often he helped the Gallagher's out financially. The way he left in S5 fucking sucked, just completely ruined the character for me. All the traits that made him fun and spunky and witty in earlier seasons just made him an obnoxious scumbag the third time around.
Robbie: B tier. Self admittedly pretty boring and it was pretty clear Fiona was never that into him (she's a thrillseeker, after all) and their personalities / chemistry never really felt as natural and well meshed as her and Jimmy's. Nonetheless, he was a good dude and definitely didn't deserve to be cheated on with his of shit cokehead brother.
Gus: F tier. Wish I could feel bad for him like I do Robbie but the whole sensitive intellectual Indie Music Guy thing is not doing it for me. Also Fiona definitely deserved having "The F Word" written about her but introducing her to a bar full of strangers and putting her on blast coupled with the whole passive aggressive silent treatment thing kinda made me cringe. He's also iust boring. Idk what Fiona saw in him they were not right together and I kinda don't know what they expected after getting married within 3 days of knowing each other.
Sean: D tier. If he had his own show I'd watch it but I think he's too old and bitter for Fiona and tbh he's also kind of a cranky bitch to everyone. The stuff with his kid is interesting but I wish he and Fiona had just stayed friends. Honestly can't believe she's making a decision to date her boss again after what happened with Robbie and her cool office job.
