Please Care About Aquaman With Me: Wrapping Up the Nineties

Welcome back to Poseidonis! This one is a long one, but I wanted to wrap up this era, so let’s just dive in, okay? (See what I did there?)

Last time, both Garth and Koryak attempted to overthrow Arthur, who banished Koryak and gave Garth a great big hug. Also, Arthur was officially reinstated as king, but Mera refused to go back to being queen since her marriage to Arthur is no longer valid under Atlantean law. The drama!

Our last installment coincided with the end of the nearly 50 issue Peter David run, which built most of the post-Crisis Aquaverse up from scratch. After a couple of fill-in issues, he’s replaced by Erik Larsen. Apparently there was a long and vicious rivalry between PAD and Larsen, which is a fascinating internet rabbit hole to go down (do you want to see grown men behaving extremely unprofessionally on very old message boards? google this shit), which may be why Larsen promptly throws out a lot of PAD’s toys and brings in his own. Some of them never do anything interesting ever so I won’t really be talking about them here. (I’m sorry, Lagoon Boy! I liked you in Young Justice!)

Also, we’ve reached the early 2000s, so the title of this post isn’t entirely accurate, but we’re closing out this run and will start fresh with the 2003 series, so...just go with it, okay?

Anyway, the Poseidonians almost immediately discover a hidden civilization beneath their own, led by King Noble (Larsen was not working overtime on character names). He and Mera are intensely attracted to each other, leaving Arthur jealous and sulky:

He tries to win Mera back by shaving and cutting his hair to look like he did when they were younger, but it’s not that easy:

Mera points out that their marriage is no longer valid under Atlantean law because of infidelity, and Arthur agrees that yes, okay, there have been “infidelities on both sides,” which...as you’ll recall, Mera was raped, so fuck you very much, Arthur.

Anyway, even if Mera isn’t impressed by Arthur’s naked chin and sad sack demeanor, someone else is:

Yep, Debbie’s back, and she’s changed her codename to Indigo, not that it will matter because she will continue to barely do anything and disappear. Anyway Debbie had previously been a potential love interest for Koryak and is prone to saying things like “kewl,” which leads me to believe she’s about Koryak’s age, much like Dolphin and Garth are the same age. I’m not one to clutch my pearls over an age difference here or there, but Arthur seems to habitually look at women his sons’ ages as prime dating material and that deserves some side eye. However, there is a MUCH BIGGER REASON these two shouldn’t be kissing, which we will soon learn.

Speaking of Garth, he is busy being tragic and passive aggressive whenever Arthur gives political responsibility to or even pays attention to anyone else:

I am FASCINATED by this aspect of Garth’s character so stay tuned for a separate meta post on that. (Yes, more Aquaposting. I’m sorry.)

Also, Dolphin drops a bombshell:

GARTH NO. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. He spends the next couple of issues bewailing the situation to a mermaid who he once mistook for his dead girlfriend, which does not improve things. GARTHOLEMEW. TERRIBLE.

Meanwhile, my darling Koryak is in a bit of a pickle:

The woman on the left is, shockingly, Atlanna, Arthur’s mom, who literally everyone thought was dead. (She’s not actually a mermaid, the bad guy did fucked up surgery on her.) The incredibly annoying bad guy used to be called Charybdis, and he’s the reason Arthur lost a hand. Now he’s back, he looks like this for some reason, and he’s changed his name to Piranha Man because he thinks it sounds cooler. This really feels like Larsen going “No one even knows what a Charybdis is, ugh, David, you’re so pretentious” and changing everything about Peter David’s creation to be an asshole. But Piranha Man sucked when he was Charybdis and he still sucks now, so it’s really more of a lateral move rather than making him better or worse as a villain.

Anyway he has decided to capture all of Arthur’s loved ones in revenge. He manages to snag Mera, Atlan, Garth, Dolphin, and Debbie as well as Atlanna and Koryak, but Arthur rescues them and then just sort of...doesn’t know how to deal with his mom being back so he puts her in a hospital and ignores her. Also Koryak just eaves off page and like three issues later Arthur realizes he never got to talk to him. Doing great, Arthur!

Anyway. Garth finally gets over himself and proposes to Dolphin, who accepts. The Titans arrive for the wedding:

LOOK AT HIM HOLDING LIAN. PRECIOUS.

He has a little heart-to-heart with Donna about where his head’s at:

“I was sort of pushed into this...and I don’t love Dolphin as much as I loved Tula...” This is gonna go great.

Anyway, Garth and Dolphin get hitched, and then there’s a very stupid plotline where basically there’s like a gangster fish that’s getting everyone high on hallucinogenic fish secretions? Sure. The fish secretions just exacerbate all the underwater romantic complications going on: Mera is attracted to Noble but still has feelings for Arthur, Arthur is still in love with Mera but interested in Debbie, blah blah blah. Everyone gets all hornt up on fish secretions, and then...

LOLOLOL OH NO. TERRIBLE. Anyway yeah it turns out Atlan is Debbie’s father too. This information is so shocking that Debbie instantly vanishes and never appears in another Aquaman comic ever again. Whoops?

Speaking of women disappearing forever, Atlanna’s doing better:

There’s a whole thing where dead people come back from hell, including Atlanna’s husband, King Trevis, who is the one who actually abandoned baby Arthur in the middle of the ocean when he was born. Atlanna basically defeats him by calling him a cuck, and then vanishes until the New 52, where everything about her will be different. Bye, Atlanna!

Also, people coming back from hell involves a lot of lava, some of which burns off King Noble’s antennae, at which point Mera promptly realizes she’s not interested in him at all, he was just releasing sexy pheromones from his antennae without realizing it. Bye, Noble!

With their romantic rivals thus vanquished or sister-zoned, Arthur and Mera admit that they still love each other and get back together. I give them about a year. (No, really. I’ve read the comics after this.) And with that, Larsen’s run is over. Bye, Larsen!

He is replaced by Dan Jurgens, who immediately plunges into a Garth-centric story (good) that starts with Arthur and Garth...on a talk show?

HI YES HELLO, I’M FASCINATED BY THIS. Garth is a prince now? This is new! He’s literally never been called a prince before. Does this mean Arthur has named Garth his heir? Is it an honorary title? DAN JURGENS, EXPLAIN.

(Also, hi, Rodunn, welcome to being a key Aquaman supporting character for about three years and then going away forever. Too bad, I like Rodunn.)

Arthur is on this talk show trying to get support for Atlantis, because the land nation of Cerdia has committed many acts of aggression against Atlantis and the UN is ignoring Arthur’s pleas. In fact, Cerdia attempts to assassinate Arthur with a bomb during the show, but still, no assistance or sanctions from the international community.

(Cerdia, btw, is sort of vaguely “foreign” with no location specified in the comics, though the DC wiki says it’s near the Canary Islands. It’s ruled by the evil Queen Charlanda, who wants to conquer Atlantis for...pearls, idk. The whole thing is very silly.)

In the midst of a devastating attack on Atlantis...Dolphin has her baby!

Awww, they’re cute.

However, almost immediately after this, the baby is kidnapped by a mysterious figure who is clearly allied with Charlanda. Arthur and Garth take the fight to Cerdia and discover that Charlanda’s secret ally is...

...Orm! Who has been manipulating Charlanda the whole time, and pretty much immediately causes her death after being confronted by Arthur. He’s also placed Garth’s baby in a tank of water that he starts superheating, which isn’t exactly what happened to Aquababy, but it’s enough to be a very pointed parallel.

Garth manages to control the temperature of the water enough to protect the baby. In the chaos of the fight, the tank breaks and Orm flees. The Arthur we’ve always known would chase the bad guy.

But now he stays to help find the baby! Awww. I’m genuinely emotional about this, you guys - the rift between Arthur and Garth that began with Aquababy’s deal never really healed properly, and this is a huge step in that direction.

Not that Arthur isn’t HUGELY PROBLEMATIC, because he promptly declares in front of the UN, god, and everyone that since Cerdia’s queen is dead, Atlantis is annexing Cerdia as a colony. See, Charlanda kept her people poor and uneducated, so they can’t possibly self-govern, so really, Arthur’s doing them a favor! This is portrayed as a good and heroic move. What the fuck.

THAT SECOND PANEL IS TOO CUTE. ILLEGAL.

Also, “for all practical purposes, our prince”? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN. IS HE A PRINCE OR ISN’T HE. IS HE THE HEIR OR ISN’T HE. ARTHUR EXPLAIN. Also lol at Arthur being like “I’m afraid it’s time I put you to work on official business,” both because that is literally the only thing Garth wants in the entire world and because of what the official business is:

Yeah, he wanted Garth to name his baby after Cerdia so he could Lion King-style wave him around and make the Cerdians stop being mad about being colonized. Both Arthur’s pose and Cerdian’s face here upset me greatly. The only good thing about this page is Dolphin’s outfit.

There are about five issues of the run after this, but they’re not significant, plot-wise - Arthur and Mera go to Skartaris, Garth gets kidnapped by aliens, yadda yadda. This last page is pretty indicative of the way this series ends: with Arthur sitting confidently on the throne of an empire, Mera by his side, a dynasty implied to be secure with Garth and Cerdian in the (presumed???) line of succession, allies galore.

And the second the 2003 series begins, that will all promptly be well and truly fucked.

Next up: Said fuckening, featuring the Obsidian Age, yet another deposing, and Arthur’s magical water hand!

SpongeBob SquarePants Shipping Chart (FEEL FREE TO USE)

MAJOR UPDATE (10/14/2023): Added More Characters from the Musical

For the record, I've decided to create my own official blank shipping chart of one of my Fandoms for the very first time (since there isn't much SB Shipping Charts all over online so I created my own).

I've created Two Versions in case for Half of the Fandom's POV on the Two King Neptune characters (rather if you believe they are the same Character or Not).

Queen Salacia (For those who don't know, in Roman Legends, Salacia was the Goddess of the Sea as well as the Actual Wife of Neptune (her Counterpart was Amphitrite, a Greek Goddess who was Poseidon's Wife). However, considering that the Franchise has secretly done an Alternate "Wife Swap" idea between the Consorts of the Greek/Roman Sea Gods, Salacia did appear in a Cameo of the Third Movie, regarding if it could be truly her or not. There was also a Semi-Design of Her through Concept Arts behind the Third Movie that I did found through ArtStation by 3D Developer (Michael Defeo). flavored chapstick. i say this is a problem only because what started with steve gifting her an innocent dr pepper lip smackers (bc it’s her favorite soda) snowballed into expanding beyond her simple strawberry and cherry to tootsie roll and more—up to 10+ and counting. does this obsession make sense when she always has to top it off with a separate gloss for the perfect shine? no. will that stop her? of course not. she makes more trips to claire’s than she’ll ever admit to

secretly has a thing for bill murray. can’t/won’t explain why but she’s kinda into it

11: bad/petty habits

accidentally/on purpose made an enemy of jim hopper during her sister’s disappearance because she wrongly assumed that everyone just forgot about katy and beth wouldn’t let him. it was a surprising day indeed when the 5’2 head cheerleader looked him dead in the eyes and called him a “lazy fucking asshole.” it sure made for some awkward apologies when katy did return

people pleasing people pleasing people p— she has this deep need to be loved & as a result she’s always giving more than she gets.

but there’s only so much of yourself that you can safely give away before you lose sight of who you are

she can be the most passive aggressive bitch in town if she wants to be—never unprompted, though. except for when it comes to carol perkins. not for any particular reason per-say, but she has hated carol since the 1st grade and she’s a heinous bitch so she must’ve done something to deserve it, ok?

will not hesitate to correct anyone who incorrectly states a fact or quotes

22: people who’ve influenced them greatly

in terms of fashion/general vibes, it’s a delicate and carefully curated mixture of lady di, brooke shields, & molly ringwald. she’s put-together, trendy, fashionable, and girly in a way that is enviable to her peers but still creative and uniquely beth (think: designer outfits paired with one-of-a-kind accessory finds she picked up at antique shops)

especially in her younger years/as a teen, her mother has been a big influence on beth. she means well, but it’s more for her own sake than beth’s. mrs. debbie sullivan is all about keeping up with the other pta moms in loch nora for most of beth’s life. she’s the one who taught her her love for fashion and never missed a chance to brag about beth for getting elected cheer captain or winning prom queen. but her mother seemed a lot less interested in anything than wine and her pills after the events of fall 1983

beth’s best friends, amy and tiffany, mean more to her than all of her other fleeting “friends” combined. they’ve been inseparable from the get-go, known by their peers as the trifecta— the redhead, the brunette, the blonde. && it’s amy who teaches her that she should never settle for less than what she wants and deserves. tiffany showed her that it’s okay to be a bitch sometimes, because she doesn’t owe anyone anything. together, they are unstoppable. i like to think of them as a teenaged cheerleader version of the powerpuff girls tbfh

her little sister katy, in more ways than i could possibly name here. her disappearance (and reappearance) alone deserve their own essay, but she admires so much about her nerdy, headstrong little sister. it’s her drive to be the best big sister she can that makes beth such a natural leader and really highlights her warmth and maternal nature. but don’t get me wrong, katy can still be a pain in the ass, as all little sisters are.

dustin henderson!!! sure, he’s the annoying lil brother she didn’t ask for, but he’s also been such a positive force in her life. especially since katy’s disappearance. she adores him and their relationship is parallel to her and katy’s. he helps her to embrace her nerdier side and not feel ashamed that she likes history. she also kind of owes him and his mischievous scheming for pushing her together with the love of her life, too

as cliche as it is, i would be remiss if i didn’t add steve harrington to this list. steve is so much more than just a boy who she likes; he is the first person to every truly understand her. steve was patient and kind and he taught her that she is so much stronger than she gives herself credit for, but she doesn’t always have to be. he makes her a better person, makes her want to be one, and vice versa

there are more ofc (did not include her historic heroes or feminist icons but just so you know, she does in fact love betty friedan. which would probably surprise her classmates but that's another story)

a bonus lil blurb/headcanon based on 5, set in 1980:

she and carol had always been frenemies at best

but when they’re among the only cliques of eighth graders invited to a high school party, none of that matters

at least not until a tipsy sophomore rounds up a game of spin the bottle

beth looks around the room, makes eye contact with steve, and agrees

then it was steve’s turn. as the bottle began to slow and neared beth, carol “accidentally” nudged the glass, causing it to fall just short of beth and land right on nicole, two seats down

it was no secret that, although they were currently ‘off,’ carol had every intention of getting back with tommy eventually

that was about all beth knew about him; it was more than enough

if carol wanted to play dirty, beth wouldn’t hesitate to beat her at her own game (er, at least in the minds of two slightly intoxicated 14-year-old girls)

it wasn’t long after that when beth’s spin landed somewhere between steve and tommy.

despite every part of her telling her that carol was certainly not worth all this, she simply agrees when tommy insists that it was closer to him (even if it really wasn’t)

and so, with a single glance at carol, she made out with him in front of the entire party

the whole thing felt wrong and awkward, because he was too slobbery and his tongue was down her throat in an unpleasant mess

but as he finally pulled away (more due to being pried apart than anything), the look on carol’s face was more than enough consolation

she missed the disgruntled, sour glare steve was giving tommy

carol pretty much avoided beth after that; apparently tommy “hadn’t kissed her like that in ages”

beth considered carol lucky for that

The Greatest American Rock Star Tournament

A lot of new people have discovered the March Madness of American Rock Bands in the past couple of days and are reblogging and commenting on polls that closed some time ago. I appreciate the energy, but unfortunately there’s also a lot of anger and threats directed at bands and the people who voted for them. I propose redirecting that energy to our follow-up tournament for The Greatest American Rock Star! Follow this blog and reblog this post so we can get as many voters as possible for the next tournament and hopefully avoid people being angry about it after the fact.

Here's the plan:

I’m making a list of solo rock performers from the United States (including artists who were born, naturalized, or just lived in the US for a long time). The list is below the cut and currently has 312 artists. I’m still accepting submissions but will cap it 320.

We're using the broadest definition of rock for the artists participating in this tournament. Genres and sub-genres will included acid rock, alternative rock, art rock, blues rock, country rock, dance music, doo-wop, electronic music, folk rock, funk, glam rock, grunge, heavy metal, hip hop, indie rock, industrial, new wave, pop, power pop, punk, rap, reggae, r&b, rock and roll, rockabilly, singer/songwriter, ska, soft rock, soul, surf music, yacht rock, and more! If you think an artist is "not rock" then the best thing you can do is not vote for them. Nobody wants to see your comments about how you think [artists name] is "not rock" and if you're too obnoxious about it you might get blocked.

For the first stage of the competition, artists will be in groups of 4 with other artists from the same decade. Since many artists have multi-decade careers, I’m placing them in the decade when they first emerged as a popular recording artist, which is deliberately vague, and I may shift some artists around a bit to balance the groups.

Schedule:

April 3-10: Group Stage

Every day I will post 9 to 10 polls of groups of 4. These polls will be open 7 days to allow them to get the most possible attention from Tumblr users. Campaigning for favorite artists is encouraged. Vitriol directed at artists and especially at Tumblr users who vote for them is not, and may get you blocked.

April 17-20: The Winnowing

Artists who advanced from the group stage will be seeded for head to head, one day polls against other artists who participated in groups whose polls started on the same day.

April 27-May 10: Bracket

All surviving artists will be placed into a bracket for head-to-head matchups lasting one day each.

Once Bitten: Silly vampire movie with young Jim Carrey, a great early role for him.

Audrey Rose: HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS Anthony Hopkins claims that a young girl who's been experiencing night terrors is actually being possessed by the spirit of his dead daughter SUCH A GREAT movie. More psychological horror than anything.

Blacula and Scream, Blacula, Scream: I haven't seen these yet, but obviously I will??? Hello???

Night of the Demons: horrible 80's teen scary movie, and actually, this ones a little gorey: dumb teens spend the night in a funeral parlor, and there's an incredible possessed dance by Amelia Kinkade.

The Love Witch: If you haven't heard of the Love Witch, then, listen, it's about a seventies-esque witch who yearns for love but it keeps going wrong. Aesthetic, funny, femme, witchy.

Ginger Snaps: HELLO, iconic actress pair Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle. Girlhood, Monster-ation, werewolves. Iconic.

Only Lovers Left Alive: TILDA SWINTON AND TOM HIDDLESTON. ICONIC VAMPIRE COUPLE OH MY GOD!! Moody vampires in love. Romantic and dark.

Bubba Ho-Tep: Elvis awaits his end of days in a senior living facility with his best friend JFK, when they discover a mummy terrorizing the senior residents. A classic.

Hansel & Gretal, Witch Hunters: Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in your gritty grimms fairytales dreams. Silly, kinda badass and thoroughly enjoyable.

Vampire in Brooklyn: Eddie Murphy is a vampire looking for his mistress... he has searched through oceans of time for her....

Elvira Mistress of the Dark and Elvira's Haunted Hills: IT'S ELVIRA.

Bram Stoker's Dracula: YA'LL HE CROSSED OCEANS OF TIME TO FIND HER!!! Keanu Reeve's horrible English accent, and Anthony Hopkins as a weird uncle energy vampire hunter. Incredible.

The Addams Family & The Addams Family Values: The dream couple, Gomez and Morticia. Little Christina Ricci. omg and DEBBIE!!! Classic family fun.

There are so many more movies that I want to see like Black Xmas, Planet of the Vampires, The Wicker Man, The Covenant, and Gretal & Hansel. These are some that I have seen. Horror enthusiasts, go check out pluto cause there's some good stuff on there!

Stargirl: The Lost Children isn't bad yet, Todd Nauck is great as always, but idk that leaves me a little bitter and angry. There are so many sidekicks/young heroes in DC that are still in limbo, but Jones is coming up with a whole bunch of new characters and i'm willing to bet Tim's spleen that almost all of them will be forgotten after and the other writers will not touch them.

Anita and Slobo. Koryak, Lorena and Debbie Perkins. Charlie, Wendy and Kitrina. Linda and Ariela. Cir-El and Chris. Sin. Lita Milton and normal Vanessa (and not the nightmare OOC who was in Rebirth). Amy Allen. Tommy Bronson. Helen Jordan (at least her uncle got back *sigh*). Toni Monetti. Sasha, Jason's sidekick in his crazy ginger villain era. Warlock's Daugther. Anima. Power Boy. Hell, even Mia could be brought back through this series. And thus get unique interactions between her and Emiko. There are so many comebacks planned in the Arrows miniseries that there simply won't be place for new relationships to form. We'll be fucking lucky if Lian and Roy's reunion gets TWO pages.

Maybe few modern readers know about all these characters. But each of them has at least a dozen people from all over the globe who still remember them and emotionally invested.
