Not every character in a book *needs* to have a rich inner life and backstory! #To do so would bog down the story and obliterate any notion of pacing. It's just not possible. #Jin Guangyao (nee Meng Yao) is unfortunately not free from this leeway rule. He is the culprit of this murder mystery plot #and thus NEEDS to encapsulate the themes of the book. And personally he's a 7 out of 10 at best on this front (in the AD). #MDZS is about rumours twisting reality and working towards truth. And about how people & situations are rarely ever black & white #JGY has his motivations. He's well written in regards to his actions making sense for his character. #What started as good traits (drive to succeed & improve his image) became twisted over time (do anything to maintain his image) #and it's a good parallel to WWX! He has the same arc (with different traits)! Bonus points for IGY in that regard. #but man....by the time we confront this guy for murder there's not a lot of grey morality. He's just...deep in the hole *he* dug. #There's a beautiful tragedy to it! More on JGY in later comics - this is getting pretty long already!

So many ideas about what direction he can go and they're all fun to think about-- personally I wouldn't be against a longterm redemption plot. But nothing easy for him, no, I want him to try some shit, have it blow up in his face even worse than this. Have him claw his way back into trust and good graces.

I don't think he's AS ATTACHED to the crew as some seem to think, and as much as I'd like him to be, BUT I do think there's some fondness there. It's not enough yet to deter him from his true goal, but it's there, and maybe even that small part was an influence in his fight. But now gets shoved into the far reaches of his mind because holy shit I almost died and for WHAT? These weak fools? Hell with that, no more feelings!

But the thread continues to fray; his cane/mike is broken (we dunno if it can be fixed easy), he came this close to death, and he's still not much closer to getting out of contract. He can keep himself together for only so long, and now we got Lilith coming into the picture as a potential road block that can't be as easily fought off as Adam.

I'm also not entirely sure if it's her with Alastor's soul anymore? It's still highly possible but with her being in Heaven all this time and not even speaking to her family....why bother with sending Alastor? I'm not getting the impression she cares that much, yet...and what would she even gain from it? The timelines coincide, but nothing else makes much sense for it.

Whatever it is, I'm looking forward to it and the even bigger mental snap that's sure to come. Give me that madness-> main villain-> broken down man offered a hand.

What makes the whole thing with Sammie ratting Ian out to the MPs even worse is that Ian and Mickey were literally the only ones who didn't do shit to her and her kid. In season 5, even if they WANTED to deliberately put Chuckie in prison themselves, they sorta kinda had their hands full with, I don't know, maybe THE FACT THAT IAN WAS IN THE WORST MENTAL STATE HE HAD EVER BEEN AND HE WAS TRYING TO MANAGE HIS BIPOLAR DISORDER UNMEDICATED AND MICKEY WAS DOING HIS BEST TO BE THERE FOR HIM AND TAKE CARE OF AND HELP HIM IN ANY WAY THAT HE COULD AND KNEW HOW. I get Sammie was mad about the whole thing Carl, I mean how could she not be, her son was put in juvie because of it. BUT WHY FUCK WITH IAN??? You see… none of the tiny interactions between the IC and Nesta bother me because of how literally impulsive I saw her being written as in this book. I think it’s hilarious and good content, but this girl literally did whatever the fuck she wanted. Sure at times she was like playing nice and seemed to be working with the team… but when amren was like you said what you said now leave I was like BITCH. BUT THEN I saw Nesta literally just say whatever came out of her mouth while azriel was like… maybe we shouldn’t be telling this random alien who keeps escaping these things, and then I read her just randomly putting on a weapon even though she legit says that it worries her in acosf and she probably shouldn’t be having it, and she just is like 🤷🏽‍♀️ a lot of the time that she almost gets caught in a booby trap. She just gives the mask away (with good reason) without consulting anyone. So it made a perfect amount of sense to me for Amren and Azriel and Rhys and even Cassian (tho he did literally nothing- basically nonexistent) to be like… uhh Nesta I’m questioning these decisions. Especially because it doesn’t sound like this is the first time.

Do they do it nicely? No. But do these interactions remind me of someone yelling at a toddler putting their hand on the stove after someone’s told the toddler they’d burn themselves? Yes.

But do I want Nesta to keep putting her hand on the stove? Also yes.
