BnHA Chapter 291: The Endeavor Pamphlet

Previously on BnHA: Dabi showed up atop Gigantomachia’s back and was all “you’ll never guess who I really am!” and the readers humored him and were all “who?” and he was all “TODOROKI TOUYA” and we were all “WOW └(・。・)┘ OH MY GOSH I WOULD NEVER HAVE GUESSED”, except for Shouto and Enji who were GENUINELY SHOCKED. Anyway so Touya was all “and guess what I’m doing right now!” and before anyone could even try, he was all, “STREAMING MY EMMY-NOMINATED MINISERIES ‘HELLO, I’M EVIL BUT ALSO TRAGIC AND SEXY, NOW LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT MY DAD WHO SUCKS’’, THAT’S WHAT.” And everyone was all “oh my god” and Touya was all “ヽ(⌐■_■)ノ♪” for basically the rest of the chapter, and that’s pretty much it! Oh, wait, except for the part where he also doused himself in bleach in a fit of pure theatrics, which is actually pretty much the main takeaway from the entire chapter really because it was just wild af. ANYWAYS.

Today on BnHA: Horikoshi introduces Baby Touya, the world’s most enchantingly sweet character, and is immediately all, “I sure can’t wait to tell you guys all about how his fucking jaw burnt off.” Thankfully he doesn’t (YET), and we cut back to the present pretty quickly, where Dabi explains how he took all of his brain cells that should have been used to stop him from pouring bleach over his head, and instead put them all toward his big brain plot of releasing an elaborate video detailing Endeavor’s various abuses and crimes, and even throwing Hawks under the bus as well because WHY NOT. He then leaps off of Gigantomachia’s back (like I said, no brain cells) all set to blast them with a Prominence Burn, only to be stopped by none other than THE LEGEND HIMSELF, MOTHERFUCKING BEST, PRETTIEST, NICEST, MOST OUTSTANDING MOTHERFUCKING JEANIST. Who’s no doubt outraged by the crime against hair he witnessed only moments earlier. GO GETTIM JEANY BOI.

so I haven’t had time to answer any of them because this has been the stupidest week, but I just wanted to tell you guys that I received no fewer than nine asks about Dabi’s hair. which, in a week filled with election memes and tumblr’s most cursed fandom briefly rising back up from the dead, is a pretty impressive feat for him if you ask me. like, I know I was making fun of it basically nonstop, but it sure did generate a lot of discussion so maybe I should rethink my opinions on Dabi’s PR strategies now, idk

I just want to take a moment to appreciate that Horikoshi Kouhei did one of two things here. either (1) he planned it out FROM THE VERY START that Touya would be born with red hair Because Fire Powers, but would then have his hair turn white due to trauma, thus making the Dabi/Touya connection very slightly less obvious, although Let’s Be Real Who Are We Kidding. OR, (2) the anime got it wrong and gave him red hair, and rather than allowing this plot hole to continue to exist, Horikoshi took it upon himself to concoct this elaborate storyline and pretend it was never a plot hole at all! in which case I sure hope someone at Bones is sending him a VERY nice Christmas card this year. got this man sweeping up all your messes for you. you’re just lucky he has some sort of wild compulsion to address these things

I think it’s a testament to how much Endeavor cares about Hawks that he managed to zero in on that comment even amidst all the craziness of his eldest son returning from the dead to announce how he’s been carefully plotting their destruction for years and years. like, he heard “Hawks” and his face immediately went like that. you think he’s worried that Dabi did something to him? because he’d be right to worry lol

so the Endeavor Pamphlet narration is now explaining all about how Hawks totally killed the Number 3 Hero Best Jeanist as well! yep... he sure did... totally...

interesting! we suspected as much, I think, with the clues that Ending dropped, and the little flashback right after the name reveal. still not clear how Dabi found out about it though!

looooool okay here we go, breaking out the heavy-handed holier-than-thou shit now

you know, I do find it interesting how trying to model themselves after All Might’s noble Symbol of Peace image has kind of ended up being the heroes’ undoing here. like, I could write a whole essay on this, but what it basically boils down to is that they were all trying too hard to be perfect. All Might went out there and did his thing and was amazing, and so the powers-that-be built an entire system centered around this seemingly-infallible person, and they acted like the system was infallible as well. and so most of the population ended up becoming complacent over the years, and meanwhile the people who were unfortunate enough to fall through the cracks understandably wound up disillusioned and perceiving the heroes as these false idols

anyway, but I think one positive takeaway from this is that the new up-and-coming generation of heroes represent a breakaway from that system. like, imo what we’re witnessing is the downfall of the Perfect Hero, and the rise of the imperfect hero. and this new generation doesn’t shy away from their failures or pretend like they never happened. they pretty much can’t pretend, because their failures are all right out there in the open for everyone to see. Bakugou Katsuki, just to name one example off the top of my very biased head, has had his own personal character journey basically play out right in front of the media’s eyes. his humiliation at the sports festival, his kidnapping by the League, and all of the fallout afterward. this isn’t someone who can ever go out there and convince the world that he’s perfect. but what he can do, instead, is show the world that he’s trying. that he’s trying with everything he has to do his best, to be the best. rather than this untouchable godlike image, it’s instead the image of someone painfully human who is nonetheless striving with everything he’s got to keep moving forward, flaws and all, and work his way to the top

and ultimately I think that’s going to be a much more positive image to send out to the world when all’s said and done. because rather than merely inspiring awe, heroes like that inspire people to take action themselves. or at least that’s what I hope! and not just Bakugou, but the others as well. we’ve got Shouto, whose own personal trauma is being aired in front of the whole nation even as I sit here ranting. we’ve got Deku, who cries at the drop of a hat, and who fought to become a hero despite being quirkless (and I think it’s only a matter of time before that eventually becomes public knowledge as well). tl;dr because I’m getting way too long-winded here, but these kids have effectively been humanized in a way that the old generation never was, and I think that’ll go a long way towards building trust between them and the people they’ll someday be protecting, and inspiring the next generation in hopefully a much healthier way

anyway so where were we. ...oh yes, Dabi was explaining that heroes only protect themselves, and is presumably building up to his grand conclusion of “therefore you should all just let the villains take over and burn down the world”

In real life, probably the time I was at a laundromat in Italy and this guy wandered in with a beer, sat next to me and my male roommate, assumed we were a couple, and proceeded to give us bizarre life advice. I wish I could remember more of it, but it was so odd.

Summary: After hearing endless stories about Kirishima’s sister, the two of them finally meet. And for the first time, Bakugo feels something new in him, something he knows and hates to admit it. 

A/N: I’ve been thinking abut this for almost a month now, but didn’t bring myself to write it. Now, being thinking about this for so long, I guess it was obvious it’d end up as a multi chapter (to my own surprise, can you believe that?). I’ll try to post this constantly, also to force myself to write because I’ve been ridiculously lazy about writing for a while now and I want to break that slump. Something Bakugo Katsuki found oddly curious at first was how close Kirishima Eijiro was to his sister. Up to this point, he knew you from sight. You picked up Kirishima from school three times a week. He knew your name from the countless times your little brother talked about you. You were quirkless and you were on your last year of high school and were working with a paramedic, as their apprentice, with the intention to become one in the future. 

It was stupid how much Kirishima talked about you, thought Bakugo. The admiration was evident, although it kinda made sense to Bakugo, since, despite being quirkless, you were still determined to become someone who helped people.

“Today my sister got her acceptance letter from the college she applied to!” Kirishima cheered as he walked out of the classroom, ready to head back. 

“Congrats” Bakugo said dryly not really caring. 

“We’re going to her favourite restaurant. Wanna come with us?” 

“Why would I want to go to your sister’s dinner?” 

“She told me I could invite you! She knows a thing or two about you from anecdotes, plus she watched the sports festival” 

“Yeah?” Bakugo asked, still uninterested. 

“Yeah! C’mon dude! You’ll like her, she’s cool! Besides, there’s this delicious spicy hot curry you have to try!” Wrapping an arm around his friend’s shoulders, he knew the idea of spicy food would catch his attention.

And despite his best attempts to turn him down, the idea of trying spicy food was appealing. Considering it was free food, Bakugo agreed not as bitterly. 

By the time the two of them walked towards the entrance, Kirishima spotted your small blue car. As usual, Eijiro climbed into the seat next to yours, as Bakugou sat behind you. 

“Bakugo, this is my sis! Sis, Bakugo” Kirishima smiled proudly, as the endless stories finally took a human shape for Bakugo to see up close.

“It’s good to finally meet you, Bakugo-kun” You said looking at him from the rear mirror and smiling warmly. 

“Yeah, same… “ Bakugo hissed in a low voice. “Congrats, by the way” He said lowly more as a polite gesture towards Kirishima, than to yourself. 

“Thank you! How kind of you” you cheered smiling through the mirror once more.

There was something in your kindness that felt repulsive at first to him. He wasn’t used to that sort of gentle kindness. However, seeing you interact with his friend was a whole different story. 

The closeness, and genuine bond the two of you shared. He’d never seen Eijiro so relaxed, and the way you seemed to flow with the same natural chill, talking back and forth as if you two were the closest friends, surprised him. 

It made him painfully aware of his aggressive nature. Growing up as a prodigy, sure made him turn into someone arrogant. He knew this, but wasn’t precisely bothered by it. However, that same arrogance always kept his friends at a considerable distance. He found himself craving a close bond like the one he was seeing before him. What does it feel like, having someone you trust so unconditionally? 

It didn’t come as a surprise to him, that you were so friendly. Your brother, Eijiro, was no different. And it still amazed him how despite his sarcasm and mood swings, Kirishima didn’t seem to mind any of it and stuck by his side. Always with a smile on his face. You were as friendly, and ignored his rudeness with such an ease that he felt both bothered and intrigued.

And that’s how it began. After that celebration dinner something in him happened. There was this faint trace of anxiety that twisted his gut whenever he saw you or heard your name. He wasn’t stupid, and right away could put a name to whatever he was feeling. Even though he refused to admit it, even to himself. 

Since that day, Kirishima was constantly inviting him over for dinner, or you gave him a ride home after school. Bakugo was constantly seeing you. He liked it, but he also hated it. He hated feeling anxious and sweatier than usual when you were around. He hated the beats his heart would skip whenever you smiled at him. He hated even thinking about what was going on with him. He’d never felt anything similar towards anyone, and it annoyed him that he didn’t know how to deal with it

“Oi, Bakugo” Kirishima greeted him walking up to him in the hall. “Hey, can I ask you something real quick?”

“You just did” Katsuki said monotonously. 

“Clever, but no” Kirishima chuckled. “D’you mind if I give your phone number to my sister? She asked me for it on my way here, but I thought I’d ask you first, dude” 

Bakugo’s heart seemed to stop briefly as he suddenly felt dizzy. 

“What?” He growled. 

“She showed me this very funny meme, and told me she’d like to send it to you. You’ll like it” 

“Couldn’t she sent it to you and you show it to me?” Bakugo growled, suddenly nervous that you wanted his number. Was he being obvious? Getting altered this much by just a number? Bakugo suddenly felt paranoid.

“We didn’t think of it. Anyways, can I?” Kirishima chuckled awkwardly, not thinking much of his friend's behaviour. It was just textbook Bakugo.

In an attempt to read Kirishima's body language, for the sake of his consuming nerves and self awareness, Bakugo didn't conclude anything. He sighed deeply, trying to bring himself to relax.

“Do whatever the fuck you want, I don’t care” He said walking inside the classroom, trying his best to "act normal" even though he had been since the beginning. 

“Great!” Kirishima said, hopping to his seat and typing on his phone.

During the class, he felt his phone vibrating in his pocket. Briefly, a couple of times. His mind, instantly paranoid, he thought that it might be you. Discreetly, he pulled his phone out and looked at the screen, announcing a couple of new messages from an unknown number. 

'Hello Bakugo-kun, it’s me!' He read the notification. 

Unlocking his phone, he opened his messages to the sweet surprise.

'Hello Bakugo-kun, it’s me! Kirishima [Name]! How is it going? Sorry to bother you, can I tell you something just between you and me?  Also! Here, have a meme to brighten up your day!' 

Tch, how dumb...He thought, yet with a gentle smile on his face.

'I told Eiji-chan' — Katsuki began reading

Eiji-chan? I'm gonna use that to tease him, Katsuki thought looking up from his phone and looking at the red head sitting in front of him.

—'I’d give him a gift for entering UA,'- He continued reading your texts —'but I haven’t bought him anything. I am the worst sister, I swear! Then I thought "I could throw him a surprise party" and then it occurred to me, why not invite his UA friends and celebrate that all of you made it in??'

Before answering, he saved your number.

'How corny, jfc' He typed and sent it to you.

You didn't take long to answer his text. And after a few minutes his phone vibrated a few times once more.

'Thank you. I’d like to keep it a secret, though. You think you could help me organize it? Invite his friends, and organize them. I’ll get everything for the party. Will you help me?'

'You seriously are the cheesiest, it's grossing me out' He answered. 'Fine, I’ll do it'

'Yay! Thank you Bakugo-kun! ♡♡ I owe you BIG!!'

'Yeah, sure. I’m in class atm, I’m trying to pay attention'

'Oh right! I’m I'm sorry for distracting you! Have an enriching class, Bakugo-kun! Text ya later!'

As much as he tried to concentrate, it was hard in the beginning. The scene kept replaying in his head a few times before he was able to focus on the class. The set of hearts framing his name puzzled him. A torturous shame made him feel dumb, getting excited over a few texts, how lower could he sink? 

After class, he texted you once or twice throughout the afternoon. Trying his best not to desperately open your text to answer them. He wasn't going to become a desperate idiot like everyone else around him usually did when they had a cru--

"[Name]'s here!" Kirishima's voice distracted him from his thoughts as he looked at your car. "Bye bro! See you tomorrow!" Kirishima hopped like a sheep towards the car, goad that school was over. 

You looked at Bakugo and waved at him as he just raised his hand in response. His heart wild in his chest, he remembered he was about to admit his crush on you. And with every curse word he knew, he cursed at himself.

"Bakugo-kun!" You shouted from the car. "You want a ride home?" 

He looked at you, ans seriously thought about it. Already having a hard time trying to pretend he wasn't developing a crush on you. He looked at his feet, trying to bring himself to reject the ride this time. 

"Nah, I'm good" he said. "I feel like walking today?" 

"You sure?" You insisted. 

For fucks sake, stop! He thought, feeling his body tense up. 

"Yeah" He hissed.

"Okay then. Be careful though! Text us when you get home safe and sound" 

It was very uncomfortable how much you seemed to watch over him. Maybe it was your older-sister instincts kicking in. But not even his mother worried that much about him. 

Bakugo didn't answer. He just stared quietly. Interpreting his silence as a yes, you waved at him once more before driving off.

A freelance photographer. But I'm honestly starting to lose hope. Have you tried those coloring books for adults? Yeah; it's funny you mention 'em, 'cuz a family friend got me one for my birthday earlier this month. What is a topic you definitely don't want to talk about with anyone? I don't like talking about my sexual history, doesn't matter who you are. It's just uncomfortable. What was your first gaming console? An Atari. Is there something you're eagerly waiting for? I would love love love to take at least one "famous" or award-winning photograph. It'd be such amazing validation that I'm talented at something I love so much. What is one philosophy you have regarding life/living/purpose? That's... difficult to answer seeing as I'm trying desperately to find my purpose. I do try to live by this old quote a therapist said once: "Deal with life, or life deals with you." I think it holds an incredible amount of depth and meaning in such a short phrase. How would you design the inside of your own home? I don't know the details of it, really, besides that shit is gonna look like a Halloween house year-round. I can imagine wanting black furniture, too, and having loooots of decor expressive of what I love and find comfort in. Gotta make a house feel like a home just for me. What is a band you remember liking from your childhood? Backstreet Boys, duh. Do you ever get mad at people for not having the same opinion as you (i.e. abortion being wrong/right, meat-eating being wrong/right)? Two things: it depends on the topic, and "get mad" is the wrong term for what I feel. It's more disgust; ex., I'm repulsed by anti-gay rights people and want absolutely nothing to do with 'em, but I'm not like, mad at them. Do you edit any of your pictures? In what ways? Oh yeah, and it definitely depends on the raw photograph. I edit depending on the mood it emanates; like if you've seen my roadkill photography versus nature shots, there is an extremely distinct difference in editing style and vibe. I'd say in general though, I tend to like to brighten my photographs and add more vibrance. If you like to take pictures, what is your motivation? God, I could write an essay on this. I just love and am so thankful for the fact we can literally freeze time forever with the click of a button and look back on fantastic sights, beautiful moments, memories... It's just magical to me, and I adore contributing to that art. Would you ever consider living anywhere cold? Well yeah, that's my preference, actually. What is your absolute favorite food? The spicy shrimp fritas from Olive Garden, jfc. Would you ever wear snake-skin pants, or other animal clothing? Fuck to the absolute hell no. What foreign country would you like to go to for a shopping spree? Idk, considering I'm not well-versed in the artistic creations of other countries. Perhaps India? Japan? I dunno. What do you spend most of your day thinking about? I ain't gonna bullshit nobody, my PTSD. In some way or another, he's lurking in that head of mine through memories, flashbacks, wonders of what could have gone differently... but thank God it's no longer in the forefront of my mind after my first PHP. I've come very, very far, but especially when trying to blank out my mind to fall asleep, parts of PTSD strangle my brain until I'm just finally out. I really hope that changes someday. I can speak a very little bit of German. Took four semesters of it in high school and became very good at it, but lack of practice has pretty much ruined that. Most, probably, but in some ways I can understand it - at least, in the sense that with the assistance of modern technology and advancements in satiating our wants so quickly, kids just expect it. I definitely believe that patience is something to try to be deeply instilled in everyone, though. I don't have an ounce of it (in most situations) and wish I did. Have you ever tasted birch sap? No. How about the young buds/shoots of spruce trees? No. Which edible flowers have you tasted? One of my favorite Southern experiences is finding a bunch of honeysuckles and tasting the honey (is it technically even honey??). Tastes amazing. My family's hairdresser lives down a beautiful path that sprouts a massive amount of them, and as kids, my sisters and her two boys would go tasting them while our parents talked for so long, or if we were waiting our turn. Good memories. What has been your worst restaurant experience? I'm not sure, really. What's the most immature, adolescent thing that still makes you laugh? I wouldn't say "scarred me for life" by any means, but when I was little, I was terrified of the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz and even had nightmares about her. It sucked because my little sister was obsessed with that movie, haha. In one sentence, how would you sum up the Internet? A source of incredible knowledge but also hate and misinformation. What would be the most ridiculous thing for the government to make illegal? I literally dread the idea of Roe vs. Wade being reversed. Banning abortion would kill so many people with operational uteruses and cause absolute pandemonium. How many friends do you have on social media and how many of them do you know for real? On Facebook, I have 124 friends, and I'd say I know most of them "in real life." However, having been on the Internet since I was so young and befriending loads of incredible people, a good chunk are "online friends." Hell, I'm more interested in their lives than most "real" ones. Long-distance friendships are so valid. What fact amazes you every time you think of it? Lots of things, generally regarding the stupidity of humanity. What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? Probably going to the beach w/ my old friend Colleen. We had zero plans of doing it, but she just called me one morning and asked if I wanted to go, and off we went. It was a fun day. What has taken up too much of your life? I'ma be real, WoW. I don't think I'm addicted to it like I once was seeing as I go through spans where I barely want to play it at all and don't, so I truly am capable of not playing it, but rather it's just the most entertaining way to kill time in my life. I wonder a lot if it's "enough" to be proud of with how scarred I still am? I still struggle with a lot and feel like I could be so much better by now if I tried harder. If I'm completely honest with myself, I think it's finishing high school in the top percentile of my graduating class. There was a ceremony for the handful of us and all, and I cherish my plaque probably too much. Reminds me of a time when I knew what the fuck I was doing. What's the strangest thing you ever did as a child? Thinking I had "animal powers" where I could invoke the traits of certain animals at will, like what the actual fuck, Brittany. What did your mother teach you? Christ, a lot. Dad didn't do a lot of the raising, honestly, so much of my core values and whatnot were instilled by my mother. She taught me to care for and be nice to others, respect myself, try my best in everything, and most importantly that she is always there for me and my sisters no matter what and can tell her absolutely anything. She was very serious about us going to college and saving sex for marriage when we were younger, but she diverged from those ideas as absolutely necessary with experience. I'm extremely lucky with who I call my mom, overall. What did your father teach you? Eek... Read above. Not a lot as a kid (save for riding a bike and playing softball); most he's taught me has come following reuniting with him after my parents' divorce. I remember we went to lunch once and talked about my breakup, and he talked to me about sometimes, you just have to let people go in order to be happy, like with him and Mom. He's very serious now about ensuring us girls know that he is always there for us and will help us in any way he's capable. What makes you feel powerful? "Powerful" isn't something I really feel, if I'm being real. What are you ready to let go? It would be inexplicably fantastic if I could let every speck of Jason go in both my head and heart. What is your most bizarre deal-breaker? I don't really find any of my expectations and limits as "bizarre?" They're all valid to me. Well wait, idk if you'd find it strange that I absofuckinglutely would not date someone who hunts, but it's not to me. That's a difference in a very serious value to me. Would you rather be hated or forgotten? Hated. God, I don't want to leave this earth having given just nothing. I can live with some people hating me for whatever reason. What’s the biggest personal change you’ve made? Accepting my bisexuality, probably. That's something that I consider pretty big for two reasons: 1.) I could end up with a woman forever, and especially 2.) I was originally homophobic. I still have difficulty in fathoming how I ever was. What are some of your short-term goals? PHP is finally starting to make me build these again. I want to get better at selfcare, draw, write, and read more, I want to drink a lot more water, exercise way more... Lots of things, really. What is the weirdest thing about you? Uh. I dunno. Probably that I RP meerkats, which is a very obscure RP niche for sure.
