a big mercy in the world is that it's actually much harder to hijack someone's behaviour with some kinda visual stimulus than capital would like.
so despite the constant semiotic fusillades of advertisers trying to 'shit in your brain' as the ad hacking slogan goes, you still get better at shutting it out. the advertisers have to resort to more and more desperate means to try to get you to buy product. of course they sell this to their clients as subtle behavioral modifications that manifest without the target even realising. but despite the occasional breakout viral success, it's mostly just a zero sum desperate battle to remind you that they exist at all. most ad exposures are wasted on people who either were never going to buy the thing or were already going to buy the thing. advertisers mostly just copy other advertisers and follow fads but present themselves as the key to success like a court alchemist to a king. overall it's a cancer swallowing up more and more of its host.
this does not make it any less annoying.
anyway, ads are only one part of marketing, and since they kind of suck, the modern method to promote your shit is to try to get 'organic' promotion through word of mouth, positive user reviews on a storefront, etc. so of course many companies cultivate 'influencers', post shill reviews, buy fake metrics, and all that. since all these mechanisms then become immediately less trustworthy, an arms race develops of trying to camouflage the fake marketing speech as 'genuine', 'honest', 'unbiased' etc. the result of this on communication is bad, there's chaff everywhere, but once again the effort of the marketer trying to control you bounces off the wall that people hate it and will not go along with it if they can help it.
a more subtle approach is to just try and cultivate people assigning themselves the role of reviewer. this can create something a bit more symbiotic. the reviewer gets to build an identity out of consuming product and being a discerning connoisseur, and the stuff they like gets free marketing written about it. hence sites like goodreads and letterboxd. not only that but when the thing they like does well, the reviewer gets to feel proud that they acted as a kingmaker.
one weird upshot of all this is that a small company will get really worked up about a negative review on a platform from some rando and go out of their way to placate them. i feel like we're going to see more people exploiting this - ig the gacha mra shit in korea is in part a ripple of that, though those cunts went a lot further than just review bombing.
anyway I've participated in this machine. arguably all the writing about fiction i do on this blog is feeding into it. when i think about it, i think it stinks, but I'm not sure what else to do. there are authors i admire, and who are my friends, i want them to be read by people and have bread on the table.
obviously just because there are powerful actors whose primary concern is moving product doesn't reduce all the discussion of art to elaborate games around moving product. in some sense the 'product review' form is an invading force, best disregarded. but i feel like it would be unwise to ignore the ecological mechanisms underlying what gets made and how and what makes its way to my eyeballs... and how my own behaviours belong to that ecosystem. even if it's depressing to think in those terms.

Unfairly Maligned Games, Vol. 2
Games I loved that got low scores, review bombed, or have some other weird negative stigma attached to them that I think is unfairly earned.
NOTE: I don't believe in giving games a number score or a letter grade. Maybe I'm just bad at criticism or very easy to please, whatever.
Tumblr media
We Happy Few [2018]
Originally advertised as some kind of procedurally-generated stealth horror survival game that people kept insisting was "like BioShock" even though there is literally zero correlation or even vague resemblance to BioShock, this game's crowdfunded development process was a long hard rollercoaster ride through concept and scope changes, getting picked up by major studios and publishers, a constantly evolving marketing campaign, and a loud, rude blasting of negative press right before and right after launch due to bad take misinformation and some game-breaking bugs on Day One.
Tumblr media
We Happy Few started as a Kickstarter project from Compulsion Games, a small studio known only for their previous game Contrast. In Contrast, you play as a child's silent imaginary friend in a cabaret dancer costume who can phase in and out of backgrounds to become a shadow on the wall and solve platforming puzzles. Working together, you help the child navigate through her emotions as her parents struggle through their own relation-shit in an early 1900s European port town. Seeing as their first game was stylish as hell and widely praised among indie crowds, it's no surprise that a Kickstarter for a new game from that studio became an instant success, so much so that it caught the eye of several big studios (Microsoft and Gearbox Publishing), and it quickly turned into a vastly bigger project with many more hands working on it. The proc-gen element was downtuned and streamlined, and the main emphasis of the game became about survival, stealth, and story.
Tumblr media
And let me tell you. In terms of story, this game is phenomenal. The simple premise is that you play through the lives of three people living in 1950s-60s England, under a government that is forcing everyone to take these candy pills called Joy that make you instantly and excessively cheerful, so you can easily forget about all the horrible things that the government wants you to forget ever happened about The War, the Missing Children, and all the people still actively dying of malnutrition from the ongoing Famine and all that. The people are mandated to forget their worries, grin and bear it, pretend everything's just peachy keen, and if you refuse to take that pill, people will notice your un-cheerful behavior and call the police to track you down and beat you senseless. Can't have any Downers in our perfectly lovely happy town, now can we?
Tumblr media
The game's art direction features two stark parallels between a dreary English village and early 60s-70s psychedelia (with a hint of A Clockwork Orange for good measure), and a soundtrack influenced by bands of the era, such as The Doors, The Beatles, The Byrds, etc. The dichotomy of looting dilapidated rural homes while avoiding plague-ridden peasants versus the rainbow streets and lava lamp light show sex dens in the cities is truly astonishing. It's a game about, funnily enough, Contrasts between the bright and cheerful life everyone is forced to think they're living, and the grim depressing reality that lies underneath. Many people initially assumed this meant the game had some kind of anti-drug message about not relying on your depression medication cause pills can't fix everything, but it's clear right from the get-go that's nowhere near the case. We Happy Few is a story about revisionist history, the pressure to conform, submission to a corrupt system that might not even know what it's doing, and the very British notion of Keeping Calm and Carrying On as if major atrocities hadn't just been committed in a massive world war.
Tumblr media
Gameplay-wise, this is a strange hybrid of survival and stealth, with combat definitely being present, but taking a backseat for the most part. It's much easier to distract enemies than fight them, and many of the characters excel at hiding in plain sight, provided you don't do anything to make people suspicious, like running and jumping around or breaking into houses to raid them for food. You do have options and skill trees though, so the game does allow you to tailor it to your own playstyle to a degree. I had significantly more fun playing it slow and methodical, sneaking up and choking out enemies, and watching NPCs bump into each other awkwardly while quoting ancient English literature for no apparent reason. Taking it slow, reading every scrap of paper and Journal I found, my final playtime was about 50~ hours.
Tumblr media
Again though, let me gush about the story for a second. The base game has three full chapters, each of which has you play as a different character with different strengths and game mechanics (including such wildly inventive ideas as the burden of motherhood taking up inventory space if you don't periodically check on the baby you have to leave at home, and carefully maintaining a balanced blood sugar level so you don't collapse?!). Their stories are all deeply connected in ways that aren't immediately apparent but are cool as hell once the pieces of the puzzle come together. Each chapter more or less takes place at the same time, but the events always play out slightly differently, because memory-altering drugs fuck with your sense of reality and make us all question the reliability of each narrator. If that wasn't already cool enough, the game also features three DLC packages where you play as three ADDITIONAL characters, each of whom is also a recognizable face in the main story if you're paying attention. These DLCs add even more neat mechanics and open up the story events even more in and around the main game. They were honestly all an absolute blast to play, especially if you were already as invested in the story as I was. And the subject material goes all over the place, touching on such highly specific topics as 60s science fiction, gay lovers, Beatlemania, trippy drug-induced murder mysteries, the British occupation of India, and plenty more. I can't stress enough what a unique storytelling experience this game has to offer. It really is unlike anything else I've ever played! But alas, we should probably talk about why nobody else seems to be as enthused about the game as I am...
Tumblr media
Aside from the huge misunderstanding about the game's message, We Happy Few was bombed with criticism on Day One due to some major bugs that hadn't been ironed out - remember, for a $60 game backed by some big names in the industry, it was still very much an indie passion project from the start, and it's clear it wasn't given the full AAA treatment at all. Several big-name Game Reviewers (a field I detest almost as much as Cartoon Reviewers) ripped into the game for its bugs, and while I can't fault people for being mad at broken quests and at least one full-on softlock, not everyone experienced those bugs, and many of them were ironed out in later patches. It's almost like chasing those Day One reviews and videos are a bad idea for people who want to Enjoy Games. Sadly, first impressions are all that seem to matter anymore in gaming, so those early negative reviews still sting to this day. But people out there will give games like Skyrim a perfect 10/10 despite a significant number of similar bugs (hell, they're almost a charm of the series at this point), so why should an indie game not be given the same graces?
Tumblr media
In closing? We Happy Few is a phenomenal story in a completely fresh setting that really doesn't feel like anything else before it. The game has been criticized to hell and back for its early bugs or for "boring" gameplay or whatever the Review outlets chose to report, but to me it stands out as an extremely unique experience in a sea of Lowest Common Denominator games. I'd rather play an imperfect or buggy game with a unique or highly niche premise than yet another polished piece of pristine pop pleasure, and I genuinely think people would enjoy games like We Happy Few if they just lowered their goddamn expectations for once in their lives.

St. Martin's Press Boycott
From the Readers for Accountability Toolkit:
The boycott of St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books, and other related imprints is a direct response to the publisher’s lack of accountability regarding a) statements made by an employee in their marketing department and b) their failure to respond to concerns about possible systemic issues within the department.
This employee, who we will not name, posted Islamophobic, queerphobic, and anti-Palestinian content on their personal (but public) social media. This included pinkwashing and use of the term “pallywood” which is used to imply that videos of Palestinians being murdered or brutalized by Israeli soldiers are fakes.
This content was shared in Instagram stories and was brought to our attention by Palestinian activist and content creator @vivafalastinleen.
Leen noted that while she is on the St. Martin's Press influencer list, she never seemed to receive any of the ARCs she requested. Other Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian creators had previously noted the same thing.
Leen further noticed that her white counterparts, with a comparable or smaller following, would receive these ARCS regularly and without issue. She began to question if this was a symptom of the employee's bigotry or perhaps a systemic issue within the marketing department at this publisher when she was made aware of the posts shared by this employee.
Leen attempted to reach out to St. Martin's Press when the employee's posts came to light, but struggled to receive a response and was largely ignored. Other influencers and content creators reached out as well with similar results. However, Leen did eventually receive an email from Brant Janeway.
The response, however, was dismissive and defensive with no action being taken to investigate.
The boycott was officially enacted after ten days of radio silence from St. Martin's Press and Wednesday books. During those ten days, content creators were emailing, DMing, commenting, and making videos to demand that St. Martin's Press make a statement to no avail.
As such, Leen created a video that provided other creators with context for the boycott. This video also included a large number of screenshots and significant context explaining why those screenshots are so dangerous. Twitter likes were also included to provide evidence of how deep the employee's bigotry runs.
R4A have since then assisted in bringing attention to this issue by providing education and resources for the boycott. This includes a petition outlining our demands and urging St. Martin’s Press to hold their staff accountable to the MacMillan Code of Conduct.
While St. Martin’s Press has largely remained silent despite resuming posting like normal on their socials, they did take the time to unfollow two prominent BIPOC creators within the community including @satrayreads and @vivafalastinleen.
An email was sent from R4A to St. Martin’s Press on 12/14/23 outlining our concerns and issues with St. Martin’s Press and a response was received on 12/15/23. This response failed to meet the demands of the boycott and was heavily focused on equitable ARC distribution. As such, the boycott continues and further updates will be shared as the situation develops.
This boycott means that while you can buy and read books published by St. Martin's Press and its imprints, you should not platform this. This means not marking them as 'read' or 'reading' on Goodreads, not reviewing them, and not posting them on social media. Yes, even Tumblr. To learn more about this boycott, check out Readers for Accountability on Instagram, or this article by Prism Reports.
Participation:
Participating in the St. Martin's Press boycott can be as simple as no longer promoting books from St. Martin's Press or related imprints on your social media, websites, and review spaces. Participants are asked to withhold ALL reviews of these books until demands are met, including on Goodreads and NetGalley. Additionally, we are asking that participants avoid promoting these books in any way during this time. This includes master lists, reading recaps, and other similar posts. However, readers can still purchase and read these books in order to reduce harm done to the authors.
Additionally, participants are encouraged to share posts about the boycott, make their own posts, and utilize the templates and graphics we have provided you to keep the momentum going.
Research a book's publisher before you post about it, even here on Tumblr. If it is published by St. Martin's Press or one of its imprints (Wednesday Books, Castle Point Books, St. Martin's Essential, Minotaur Books, and St. Martin's Griffin), do not platform it.
Check out @/readersforaccountability on Instagram for more information. All text here aside from the final indented paragraph comes from their toolkit, which includes more information and more ways you can help the people of Palestine.

Indie Devs: How To Avoid Steam Key Phishing Scams
Everyone who publishes a game on Steam receives fraudulent emails by people posing as influencers trying to get a copy of their game for resale. While some real influencers may cold email you, I have personally never received one of these emails that have been legitimate or reputable so I think it's important to vet these emails with great scrutiny.
To some this might be new, to others this might be Internet Safety 101.
If you're a developer: here's what to look out for from phishing scams and how you can protect yourself from them!
If you're a streamer: here's how developers might vet cold emails you send them and how you can help developers avoid getting scammed!
Let's dive in...
What is the scam?
Tumblr media
The scammer sends you an email claiming to be a Twitch streamer/Youtuber/other influencer, and claims to be interested in playing/streaming your game. Usually they will impersonate someone with a moderate following, but isn't incredibly well known (e.g. ~100-1000 followers) but occasionally it can be those with larger following too.
They're deceptively well-written and often match the writing style of the streamer they're seeking to imitate, and will use their public profile icons as avatars. The emails are usually automated and seek to obtain a copy of your game under the pretense they are interested in playing your game or will offer you coverage of it. They'll often ask for just one key to seem legitimate, but may also occasionally ask for more (Remember: There is almost never a valid reason that a Streamer requires more than one key to play your game unless it's a multiplayer title and multiple streamers are involved). Occasionally if they are imitating a streamer whose account is inactive they'll claim they're planning a come back from a 'break from streaming' or something similar.
Tumblr media
Typically, I've found these emails come most frequently on games you release that have very few reviews or a generally low player count, because they are preying on developer insecurities about sales. From my published projects I typically get ~15 of these a month, mostly targeting my least successful one. They may also come in volume when a game first appears on the Steam market, or when it first launches to also prey on developers who are concerned about sales. I've also seen these emails through itch.io occasionally, but far less frequently.
How can I tell it's a scam?
Read the email
It sounds obvious but sometimes it's not!
When you look at the contents of the email, it's usually vaguely written but seems earnest at a glance. It will often give a background of the streamer that sounds authentic and will mention your game by name either in the body or in the subject line. Most will also link to the Streamer's Twitch/Youtube page to add to their at-a-glance legitimacy (see #3 as to why this is their downfall).
Tumblr media
HOWEVER: since it's an automated form email they won't speak to details about what the game actually is or why they're interested in the first place (e.g. "I'm a big fan of the 3D art style and how cute the characters are") and instead will only offer a vague claim about their interest (e.g. "I am always looking for new exciting games to stream"). At best, the terminology will be too rigid and pulled from your game's searchable metadata (e.g. "I love [3D] games and [platformers] genre").
Basically, they'll often say they're looking for new games to play, but not why yours specifically. They reached out personally to you and didn't bother going into detail why you should give them your game.
While this isn't necessarily a conviction, it's a big red flag.
2. Read their email address
I find this is the dead giveaway 75% of the time. The email addresses used are often cleverly thought out and at a glance will look plausable or even legitimate, but don't hold up under scrutiny. However, this one can also be the most nebulous or hard to catch.
For examples, if the influencer they're impersonating is called "GreatGamesNow" the email address might read "[email protected]" (note the easily missable lack of "s").
If the influencer they're impersonating is called "CoolGamer" it might say "[email protected]" (Note the L is a capital i)
Sometimes however, it's not obvious and that's where you'll have to do digging.
3. Research the streamer
Sometimes it's hard to tell based on email alone, so you'll have to do some research on the streamer themselves. Remember how I said most of these emails link to the streamer's page so they can look legitimate? Google search for that account and go to it to do some digging (do not click any of the links in the email as they could be unsafe).
Lets say the emailer is pretending to be a streamer who goes by "Headshotz". They said they're interested in trying my game - cool!
Their email address on the email says "[email protected]". Okay, well the "Streams" on their email feels superflous to add to an email so that's a bit suspicious, but it still may be hard to tell.
You'll notice other red flags once you look at the streamer's profile.
For example "Headshotz" might just be a Call of Duty streamer whereas your game is nothing like Call of Duty so there's a massive genre mismatch, or maybe they play one game and one game only so it doesn't make sense for them to be asking for a copy of your game to stream on their channel. They may also be a dormant account now from a streamer who has retired or gone on hiatus dating back months or even years.
4. Cross reference the emails
If I go to "Headshotz"'s profile page one of the first things I'm going to do is check if they have a public email to cross reference with the one I received. Some streamers will have a public email available on their Twitch page to make it easy (thank you streamers!!!), while others won't.
Tumblr media
Do a quick search for a YouTube account (many influencers have one) and be sure to check their "About" page, as I've found most accounts will have business emails available to check - this is how I've reliably caught most of the phishing scams sent to me.
Remember these phishers expect you to knee-jerk react to their emails and don't expect you to actually seek out proof, so doing one minute of research is where you'll catch most bad actors
What do I do now?
By now you've either
1) Identified a scammer
or
2) still aren't sure
In case #1 I'd opt to mark the email as spam and reach out to the streamer to let them know their account is being used to phish keys - in my experience they'll be grateful you took the time to warn them and be able to give warnings to other developers in the future.
In the case of #2 it's more nebulous. Generally I'd advise that if you're not sure about legitimacy, reach out to the Streamer through other means first to check it was them and follow up accordingly. Following through will a scam could put a target on your back for future scammers, and also is just bad practice in general. Again, I've found 99% of these are illegitimate but I always check just in case!
In Conclusion
In my experience this is a fascinating process and I take some weird guilty pleasure in catching these whenever they come up. I hope this information has been helpful for when you inevitably get a ton of phishing emails after publishing your game too!
Thanks for reading and I hope this proved helpful!

How a TikTok Ban in the United States Could Impact the Video Game Industry
Tumblr media
If the United States were to impose a ban on TikTok, it would have significant ripple effects across various industries, including the video game industry. TikTok has become a dominant platform for content creators, influencers, and marketers to reach millions of users, including gamers. Here's how a TikTok ban in the US could potentially impact the video game industry:
1. Loss of Marketing Platform: TikTok has emerged as a powerful tool for marketing video games. Many game developers and publishers use the platform to promote their titles, showcase gameplay, and engage with their audience. A ban on TikTok would eliminate a key marketing channel for the video game industry, forcing companies to find alternative ways to reach their target audience.
2. Impact on Influencer Marketing: TikTok influencers often collaborate with game developers to create sponsored content or promote new releases. These influencers have large followings and significant influence over their audience's purchasing decisions. A ban on TikTok would disrupt influencer marketing campaigns within the gaming industry, potentially leading to a decrease in game sales and brand visibility.
3. Reduced User Engagement: Many gamers use TikTok to discover new games, share gaming highlights, and connect with other players. The platform serves as a hub for gaming-related content, including memes, tutorials, and reviews. A ban on TikTok would deprive gamers of a popular platform for sharing and consuming gaming content, potentially leading to a decline in user engagement and community interaction.
4. Shift in Social Media Strategy: Game developers and publishers would need to rethink their social media strategies in the absence of TikTok. They may need to allocate more resources to other platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, or Twitch to maintain their online presence and engage with their audience effectively. This shift could require additional investment in content creation, influencer partnerships, and advertising campaigns.
5. Opportunities for Alternative Platforms: A TikTok ban could create opportunities for alternative video-sharing platforms to fill the void left by its absence. Emerging platforms that cater specifically to gamers, such as Twitch and Discord, may experience a surge in user growth and engagement as gamers seek alternative channels for sharing and consuming content. Game developers and publishers may need to explore partnerships and advertising opportunities on these platforms to adapt to the changing landscape.
Overall, a TikTok ban in the United States would likely have far-reaching implications for the video game industry, affecting marketing strategies, user engagement, and the overall gaming community. Game developers and publishers would need to adapt to these changes by diversifying their social media presence and exploring alternative platforms to maintain their connection with gamers.

that would be so helpful! no pressure if you're busy though xx
hello dear anon!! so sorry for the delay — here are some ARC tips! 🤍 feel free to send me a message if anything isn't clear, or if you (or anyone else reading this) have any more questions! 💌
requesting ARCs as a book blogger/bookstagrammer:
something that i did very early on after making my book blog + bookstagram was google search "[publisher] publicity email" (for example "harper voyager publicity email" or "simon teen publicity email"), and then email them introducing myself and asking to be put on their mailing list/to join their influencing program! some publishers will send out periodic forms to see what upcoming releases you're interested in, and while that doesn't always guarantee an arc, sometimes they'll send you one!
if you want a specific ARC, you'll want to email the publicity team directly! you can find the email by googling the publisher of a specific book + publicity team. be sure to double check who the publisher is in your country! for example, a book could be published under harper in the states, and another publishing house in a different country. some imprints have their own emails, whereas others may group several imprints together (for example: all YA, etc.). sometimes, authors will also list a specific contact is on their website as well!
in your email, you'll want to include a little bio introducing yourself, your statistics/following count, why you're interested in the book (if you're an ownvoices reviewer for that specific book, and you're open to disclosing that, i would also add that), and then your email + mailing address (if you want a print ARC). print ARCs are a little harder to acquire, so be sure to note if you need one for accessibility purposes. don't be discouraged if you don't get an ARC, or if you get ignored — i still get my emails ignored sometimes, and it took me a really long time to start getting print ARCs.
netgalley tips:
update your bio periodically! i used to be very diligent about updating mine every month, but i haven't done that in a little bit.
my bio essentially follows this format: [introduction about myself + my platforms + statistics], [examples of past reviews of mine], [a few sentences about my favorite books/genres/authors], and then a way to reach me [email]. of course, mine is geared towards ~ bookstagram/book blogging~, so adapt this however you want/need to!
under any circumstances, do not mass request ARCs. i warn everyone about this when they first start out on netgalley, because i made the stupid decision to request like, thirty ARCs, thinking i wouldn't get approved for any, and then of course, i got approved for a good chunk and got overwhelmed.
the ideal netgalley ratio is 80%! it'll take a while to build it up to 80%, so be patient and don't be discouraged if you get declined ARCs. remember that ARCs are first and foremost, a marketing tool.
keep an eye out on the read now section — it'll help you build up your ratio, but also, every once in a while some publishers (forever, wednesday books, etc.) will add some highly anticipated ARCs as "read now" for a limited time period (24 hours, 48, etc.). if you have emails turned on from netgalley, you might get emails about this periodically too!

Blending Brand and Consumer Identities: Top-Down and Bottom-Up Communication on Red App (Xiaohongshu)
The Fair & Lovely case shed light on understanding and leveraging both top-down brand communication and bottom-up consumer interaction, especially in culturally diverse markets. The case made me think of the Red app (Xiaohongshu), often dubbed "China's answer to Instagram," which provides a vivid example of this dynamic interplay.
Top-Down Communication: More Strategic and Targeted
Brands traditionally communicate from the top down, crafting messages that define their identity, values, and the benefits of their products. This approach allows brands to set a clear, controlled narrative that informs consumers what they stand for. On platforms like Red, where visuals and short texts dominate, this method helps brands establish a recognizable presence. For instance, a beauty brand may promote the inclusivity and effectiveness of its products using carefully curated images and influencer collaborations, mirroring strategies seen in the "Fair & Lovely vs. Dark is Beautiful" case, where brands align their products with cultural perceptions and desires.
Bottom-Up Communication: Blending Consumer Identities in Products
Red thrives on user-generated content (UGC), where everyday users review and share their experiences with products. This bottom-up approach empowers consumers, turning them into often organic brand ambassadors and critics. Their real-life testimonials, whether positive or negative, play a critical role in shaping the brand's public perception. Brands that pay attention to this feedback can rapidly adjust their strategies, product formulations, and marketing messages to better meet the evolving needs and values of their consumer base. Key Opinion Consumers will play a bigger role in defining brand identity and credibility in the digital age.
Tumblr media
Merging Identities Through Interactive Engagement
On Red, successful brands actively engage with user-generated content. They respond to reviews, repost consumer content, and even involve users in product development processes. This creates a feedback loop where consumer identities and brand identities start to merge, leading to a more authentic and relatable brand image.
For example, a brand might notice a trend on Red where users are discussing the environmental impact of packaging. Seeing this, the brand could initiate a top-down campaign about their commitment to sustainability, supported by real changes in product packaging. This would not only align the brand's identity with the values expressed by consumers but also enhance the brand's credibility and appeal on the platform.
Platforms like Red have revolutionized how brands and consumers interact, highlighting the importance of integrating top-down and bottom-up communication strategies. Brands that embrace this integrated approach can enhance their relevance and resonance among consumers, leading to stronger, more meaningful consumer-brand relationships. Just as the "Dark is Beautiful" campaign leveraged both celebrity endorsements and grassroots initiatives, brands on Red can harness the power of both polished brand narratives and raw, authentic user testimonials to build a brand identity that is both aspirational and grounded in real consumer experiences.

Takahiro Mizuno, Director and Chief Tamagotchi Officer at Bandai Japan Featured in Nikkei Business Publications Article on Tamagotchi Uni
Tumblr media
Nikkei Business Publications is a book and magazine publisher based  in Tokyo, Japan which also features a website on all things business. With Tamagotchi gearing up for the next major anniversary, and the release of the Tamagotchi Uni, Nikkei Business Publications featured an article about the Tamagotchi Uni, and even spoke with Takahiro Mizunio, Director and Chief Tamagotchi Officer, and Hirohiko Sekito, Global Toy Planning Department Planning Team Manager.
The article reviews the new Tamagotchi Uni and how it features Wi-Fi connectivity, along with pink and purple shell colors which are popular amongst generation Z. With the Tamagotchi brand a few years away from the 30th anniversary, it is not uncommon to see three generations of Tamagotchi-loving family fans.
Throughout the years, there have been releases of Tamagotchi in select markets, but regular market updates were limited to the Japan market. One of the features of the Tamagotchi Uni is that this is a global model that unifies all design and play content.
Tumblr media
Mr. Takahiro Mizuno, Chief Tamagotchi Officer explains the the reason why it became the same model worldwide. As the Tamagotchi Original was re-released in North America, the Tamagotchi was discovered more and more and people starting enjoying it as a fashion item instead of accessories, inflicters and celebrities wore them. Would you look at that, the Tamagotchi Original was a huge influence for a global release, remember that!
It was widely recognized not only by those who play with it, but also the young people of generation Z who were unaware of the trends. It means a lot that Tamagotchi fans all over the world can play with the same model! We agree!
Tamagotchi Original has become a mega-hit product with shipments of approximately 4.4 million units in Europe and the United States between 2018 and 2022. In 2022 they were released again in Japan, sold in WEGO stores for the young demographic, and succeeded in acquiring a new target for people in their teens and twenties. “I feel that a new brand value has been created,” says Mr. Mizuno.
The Tamagotchi Smart was the first wearable model which returned to the original concept of caregiving play and was a model that was more enjoyable to play alone. However the spread of online culture due to COVID-19 has boosted the installation of Wi-Fi in the Tamagotchi Uni.
Tumblr media
Mr. Daihiko Sekito of Bandai, who was in charge of planning, recalls, "I wanted to create an environment where I could communicate with fans around the world with my own Tamagotchi. The Wi-Fi function that allowed me to connect to the Internet was essential.”
The Wi-Fi function uses IoT service of Amazon Web Services, designed to withstand the connection of more than 1 million units worldwide. Mr. Mizuno says, "It's great to be able to update and add functions. Adding fun will make it a model that you can play for a longer time than before." Although it is such a small device, it has become a platform like a smartphone.
There are also opportunities to interact with influencers and talents who acted as image characters for this promotion. Limited-time game events are held at Tama Arena, and event information is available via the cloud.
In the medium-term plan that started in 2022, we set the goal of “Connect with Fans” and set the goal of deepening global connections centered on IP (intellectual property).”I think that the environment for Japanese products to sell overseas has become even better. Now is the perfect opportunity for the BANDAI NAMCO Group to increase the value of its IP. I would like to ride this trend and expand Tamagotchi more and more." Mr. Mizuno)
Tumblr media
It is very interesting to see both Takahiro Mizuno and Daihiko Sekito of Bandai interacting with the Tamagotchi Uni together, and with Tamagotchi Uni packaging from outside of Japan. This was an awesome article that really provides some additional insight into the Tamagotchi Uni and how the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the development of a Tamagotchi that connects the globe together.
