I'm kinda confused about Tolkiens Rangers..

I know both the Rangers of the North and of Ithilian are descendants of the Dunedain and known for being skilled hunters and woodsmen... But first off...where does that word even come from? How did they come to call themselves Rangers? Did Tolkien just find the word and decide "yup. That works for my broody Robin Hoods"..? And can anyone who can track and hunt and live in the wilderness call themselves a ranger or do you have to be part of one of the two groups?

Ithilian Ranger "front apron" about 90% done (going to go back and handstitch over all the machine stitching). Since I live in the hellscape of South Carolina, I wanted this piece for the kit but not a full tabard to add yet another layer to trap my heat in. The actual Ithilian ranger piece that sticks out in front over the legs is just the front-bottom of a whole tabard that goes up and over and down the back; but the back is concealed by layers of tunic and cloak, and the front and back of the torso would be concealed by tunic/jerkin. So this is the only part you see.

So I simply made the front portion, with leather cording to tie around the waist beneath most outmost layer.

While I'm not shooting for "Ithilian Ranger" specifically, in fact I dont want to include almost any iconography that ties my ranger kit to any specific fantasy setting, I still see many include this piece in kits and it always looks good. Again, layers layers and more layers. That being said, as a friend on FB mentioned, the Ithilian Rangers wear a ridiculous amount of layers. Lol

Been sewing my ass off the last two days. Today I've mostly finished 'underbracers', aside from weathering them. They're made from cow leather, and are worn beneath leather armor bracers, a layer that holds them in place better rather than simply against the sleeve of a shirt. Two or three of the Ithilian Rangers in the films have them, and they're on some of the Ithilian Ranger LotR miniatures as well.

I'm also working on the tabard bottom/Ithilian apron type deal that hangs down in front.

I swear one of these days I'll have a pic of it all together, lol.

Been cutting our and sewing material all day. Working on black leather... I'm not sure what the term for them is, or if there is one. They're essentially soft leather in the shape of bracers for your forearms that extend over the backside of your hands and are worn beneath actual leather armor bracers. Some of the Ithilian Rangers from Lord of the Rings have them, and for the most part they're almost completely covered by the leather bracers, but the bit that extends beyond to the elbow and the bit over the hands is yet another detail for the outfit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the most interesting and best looking outfits are often made from built up layers. More layers = more detail. I could definitely get away with not having these, but I want that small strip of black peeking out from behind the bracer and overlapping my hand. Lol
