Secret Smile | Javier Peña x female reader

Summary: Before returning to Colombia to get things right this time, Javi’s childhood best friend asks him to keep an eye out for his sister while they’re both stationed in the embassy. Only you don’t need Javier to keep an eye you her. Your role as a new legal advisor is all about keeping an eye on him after all. Sparks fly, lines will be drawn and broken and there’s everything to lose.

“Did you hear about the senators?” Javi asks you as you slide his office door shut behind you and immediately make a beeline for the black leather couch.

“I did,” you say, taking a long gulp of coffee and then trying to mask your scowl. Instant. Not your favourite. It’s better than nothing, or at least that’s what you’re trying to convince yourself. If you’re tired enough and add enough milk and sugar then it’s almost palatable. It’s better than the coffee at your last office at least, not that that is a particularly high bar. You’re not sure it could even legally be classed as coffee at your last office.

After you impulsively turned up at his apartment, Javi and you have started to work out a tentative peace. Maybe he’s realised that you want real justice too, that you also need to bring these people to account. You want to help him do this the right way.

The two of you spent part of the evening brainstorming ways to move the case forward, trying to find a route that wouldn’t directly compromise the surrender agreement in progress yet, but would allow Javi to pursue real consequences.

Money.

No matter how much you try, it eventually will leave a trail. You’d been told by a colleague about a banking glitch abroad that led to right here in Bogota. This might be the lucky break that could help Javi right now. The two of you have agreed that Javi should use this to obtain the data he needs on who is behind the money for the cartel. If he gets this, it will help him solidify the case and get some strong evidence too.

“So, the Clinton list? You’re going ahead with that option?” you ask. It’s the simplest way to get the bank to work with Javi and technically it’s by the book.

“I’ve already asked Stoddard to get onto that,” Javi says.

“Okay, so now you’re just showing off that you have a team.”

Javi tilts his head before asking with an innocent voice, “Oh, do you not?”

You finish crumpling up a piece of paper and throw it at him. He catches it, cocking an eyebrow with a mischievous expression.

“Really, resorting to violence now, are we, Blue? Assaulting an attaché?”

“Only people from home have ever called me that,” you say softly, “it’s kind of weird hearing it again.”

“Does it bother you then?”

“No … it’s nice, I think.”

“Do you miss Laredo?” he asks, a strange expression on his face.

“I don’t know. Sometimes. Maybe a little, but not as much as I think I should. I miss some of the people; my friends, Sofia, Rafa, my parents. I just don’t - I don’t know, I always wanted to get out and be in a city or a new place, to explore and not be in a small town. Do you know what I mean?”

“I’m the same.” He pauses and looks ahead with a thoughtful expression.

“It’s kind of weird though, that we’re both here at the same time” you add, ”I have a friend who is really into fate and superstitions and horoscopes -“

Javi snorts at the mention of horoscopes and you shake your head at him.

“Anyway, she talks a lot about kismet - fate and destiny and all that. Maybe that’s why we’re both here. We can stop Cali together.”

“That would be nice.”

There’s a strange tension in the air for a minute, Javi’s staring at you like he’s never seen you before and his expression is otherwise unreadable.

He exhales deeply and then says, “I’m meeting the bank as soon as I’m done with the senators and the bank already know what I’m coming with so they should have something for me when I get there.”

“Okay.”

“I’ve got a contact; they might know whoever the money person is. Tomorrow - tomorrow we get them.”

“Good. And what about your agents you authorised to go to Cali, without uh - any approval? Thanks for that by the way, loved the grilling from the ambassador. He was so incensed he didn’t even wait until 9am to summon me.”

“They’re heading out this morning. Feistl got a warrant ready, just in case,” Javi says. “I’m still not sure if we can trust - it’s worth a try though.”

“That’s good, I’m glad he got the warrant.” That makes your job easier, you think, less likely to cause another drama with the ambassador. If their visit does turn up something, they’re prepared and with a warrant ready they can quickly act. You’re learning that timing is everything for the DEA.

“I’ll be reminding them when we speak- everything by the book,” he says with a wry smile.

“Good. Do you think you can trust the local police?”

“I don’t think I can trust anybody, Blue.”

“Even me?” you ask, hurt permeating your voice. You look down at the floor in embarrassment.

Javi trusts a local journalist more than he trusts you at the moment. He’s supposed to know you. He’s known you for years.

“I want to,” he says quietly. “Do you trust me?”

You pause, exhaling heavily. “I want to as well.”

Javi’s office falls silent. You can hear the muffled hum of noise around the glass walls, people arriving for their day of work.

“Are you going to the big meeting then when they arrive?”

Javi pulls a face. “I have to. You?”

“Oh, no. That’s for the extra special boys’ club, Javi, I’m not invited to that.” You don’t mean to sound bitter; you’re not even surprised and your job is far less glamorous sounding than Javi’s anyway. Accountability and legal motions aren’t the sexiest of discussion topics.

“Count yourself lucky. Besides, it’s their loss. You’re smarter than Stechner and Crosby.”

“Why, that might be the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me,” you say with an overly sweet voice, watching Javi roll his eyes in response.

“Don’t get used to it,” Javi says, a lopsided smirk on his face.

The damn phone has no signal out here.

Javi had a plan. Get Jurado, make his case, do it by the book. The plane was ready, he was ready. Then Stechner came along, those stupid VIP guests came along.

Now he’s sweating through his shirt in the middle of the jungle in uncomfortable shoes and desperate for a cigarette.

Fuck the gum.

No one could have endured that helicopter flight, had to deal with damn idiots trying to talk over the headphones and helicopter noise, without needing a cigarette.

Besides quitting smoking was meant to be a signal. The new and improved Javier Peña, getting it right this time and taking down a cartel. Only the past can’t be ignored. No one will let him forget; they rarely explicitly accuse him, but too many people know what Javi did. Too many people still judge him for that, even Captain Hernandez.

Javi told Steve once that sometimes you had to do bad things to catch bad people.

Maybe he was wrong.

Maybe he’s only made things worse.

He just can’t seem to get it right.

Javi breaks from his reverie, holds his phone up one more time.

Javi has no idea what’s happening with Feistl and Van Ness, no clue whether Stoddard has been able to get anywhere with Panama. He’s not sure if you’re helping. He’s still not sure if he can trust you, as much as he wants to.

Javi can’t be here.

He can’t be part of this charade; play the role of a hero, pretend that this isn’t a giant set-up. What’s Stechner thinking with this?

Javi hears a noise, looks around and sees the army liaison who Stechner had introduced to the senators earlier.

Javi looks exhausted when you finally see him again. More than that, he’s more visibly frustrated and annoyed than you’ve ever seen him before.

Linda had told you that the senators had insisted he join them on their visit, whether he wanted to or not. You knew how much Javi had prepared for the day. The senators wanted to hear from a ‘real life hero’ though and they could control the DEA’s money for this mission. You can only imagine how delighted Javi had been with the whole sorry mess.

You hadn’t quite expected him to return like this though.

When he left the office in the morning, he had been focused, motivated, and smartly dressed. Now, you notice his shoes are covered in dirt and mud; that they look ruined. The difference isn’t just his clothes, there’s something changed in his eyes, something you can’t identify but you know that don’t want to ever see in him again.

“Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes? You really went on a day trip to the rainforest in your best shoes?” you ask sweetly. “The attaché salaries must be even better than I thought.”

“Don’t. Don’t even fucking go there, Blue.”

“I’m trying really hard to take your threat seriously, but Javi have you looked at yourself?”

Javi stands up straight. “You heard then? I was meant to go to fucking Panama, had the plane and everything ready.”

“The senators and Stechner had other ideas, I’m afraid.”

“It was a goddamn joke, Blue.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It was a setup. Nothing was real - just a show, like this whole damn thing is. This - this is all bullshit.”

You’re not sure how to reply to that and instead awkwardly fidget with the paper file you were organising.

“Stoddard said it didn’t go anywhere with Jurado.” Javi’s whole body sinks into the office chair next to your desk and he pinches his brow.

“Nope,” he says, each syllable clearly pronounced.

“Shit.”

“Yep.”

“So, did Feistl and Van Ness come up with anything?” you ask, hoping that things aren’t entirely lost for Javi’s investigation.

“They did. The police are keeping it all though. They think there might be another angle, but fuck.” Javi shakes his head.

You lean against his desk and look down at the floor, trying to bring to mind some comforting words, the right thing to say. You don’t know what to do. There’s no simple solution here; no sudden legal clause or clever argument you can pull out to make everything better and get what you need back in evidence or convince a jury. This is all so different to what you are used to; a side of investigations and cases you’ve never seen before.

“So, where are we left?” you ask, thinking aloud. “Jurado’s not an option until we can find out where he is. We need to - maybe your guys will come up with something in Cali, in the paperwork. I’ll call the police in the morning, see if I can do anything to help us get some of the evidence.”

“You think that’ll work?”

“I think I’m a very convincing person, Javi.”

“Oh, I’m sure you are, Blue. Thing is, I’m not sure -” he pauses, leans back against the couch, “I don’t think we can trust the police contact Feistl and Van Ness are with. Not from what they’ve told me anyway.”

You think about his words, the small details you’ve heard from Stoddard today. “I think you’re right. They’re holding back on the evidence. Truthfully. they’re not going to work together with us easily. I mean, the rumour is the Rodriguez brothers own half of Cali anyway, right? It would make sense. We - your guys need to proceed with caution. There are things we can do, ways to protect this work and keep the case robust.”

You shake your head at his expression, place the paperwork file down on his desk. “We’ll sort it tomorrow; things will be better then.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah, so don’t stay too late, Javi, it’s been a long day.”

“Wait, can I ask you a question?”

“If I was being mean, I’d say you just did,” you reply, folding your arms around you.

“Really, Blue? Okay, why don’t you want people to know we knew each other before the job? Is it me or -” Javi trails off and you wonder what happened during the trip to the jungle that prompted this.

You meet Javi’s gaze to try and read his expression. He looks almost guilty, as though he thinks you’re ashamed of knowing him. That doesn’t make sense because he’s Javi; he’s the hero of the DEA according to almost everyone. Stechner’s words and insinuations echo in your mind, the hints at what Javi may have done before, how desperate he was to get Escobar. Part of you doesn’t blame him for wanting to pursue justice - you can understand that desire, even if you don’t agree with what he was rumoured to have done.

If the rumours are true, it explains a lot about Javi now.

“No, it’s not you,” you say, taking a deep breath before you continue, “It’s the situation. It’s messy. I was technically recommended for this job by a friend and it is bad enough that the ambassador knows that. If it got around that you are my brother’s best friend? I got this job on my own merits and I-”

“Woah, woah, I didn’t say anything about how you got this job. I don’t even know how you got this job. Frankly I didn’t know there even was a job until you turned up.“

“I really thought you hated me for that.”

“Not you, Blue. Don’t hate you.”

“You wouldn’t have had to say anything about me getting this job. People make assumptions all the time. I’ve dealt with it my whole career, especially as I moved up, and I just wanted here to be different.” You needed here to be different. After everything that had went down in DC, this job was supposed to be a fresh start, an escape from everything you’d run away from. Only you’re rapidly wondering if you’ve jumped from the frying pan into the fire instead.

“I can understand that,” Javi finally says softly.

“It’s that one time that it really is me and not you,” you add with a grin.

“So, Blue, am I really Rafael’s best friend?” Javi asks with a crooked smile.

“If you ever tell him I told you that, I will kill you.”

“Promises, promises.”

You shake your head and look at Javi for a moment before saying, “I really should go, Javi. See you tomorrow.”

Stoddard knocks on the glass door and you quickly move off Javi’s desk, cross your arms as he walks over to his desk and waves Stoddard in.

“Sir, we may have a problem. Feistl and Van Ness weren’t on their flight back.”

“Fuck.”

You look at Javi’s alarmed face and take a slow breath.

“Okay, have you tried to call them, Stoddard? No, then go do that!” Javi says.

”Maybe - maybe they caught a lead, Agent Peña. I can call someone at Cali, see if we can subtly make enquiries,” you say softly.

Javi nods and you hear him firmly instructing Stoddard on exactly what to do.

“Guess we’re not heading back right now then,” you say once it’s just the two of you in his office, both of you standing by his desk.

“Fucking Feistl,” Javi says, leaning his hands against the edge of the desk so you can see the hint of strained shoulder muscles beneath his shirt.

“You chose him to go to Cali,” you say lightly.

Javi sighs, stands up straight as he pinches his brow. “Technically he was just the only one who asked.”

“Oh, that’s brilliant, Javi.”

“Hey, at he least showed some initiative.”

“Wonderful. Perhaps he’s showing that initiative now.”

“Go home, it’s late. I’ll clean up here, stay and see if they call.”

“Javi -”

“This part is my job, Blue, not yours. I’ve got it covered.”

“Okay. Promise you’ll call if you need anything? You have my phone and my pager, right?”

You squeeze Javi’s shoulder as you make a move to pick up your handbag, watch him start to organise the papers strewn on his desk.

Before you can leave the office, Javi’s office phone rings. You meet his eyes as he quickly answers.

“Peña,” he says. You carefully try and read his reaction, try to notice the way his face slightly relaxes before he asks, “Where the fuck have you been?”

When he hangs up the phone, he looks up at you with a smile.

“You were right.”

“I often am,” you joke breezily, “So, what was I right about?”

”They caught a lead.”

You smile broadly. “Oh, really?”

“We can get Gilberto Rodriguez. They found him.”

what sorta story do you want to see in the next Christmas Special? assuming there is one.

so this is kinda a combo of both what you'd like to see but also what you think is a more likely option so no Kismet and Bro zone at war with each other stories as fun as those are cause we kinda know they won't be happening at least not in a Christmas Special. anyway I do think it is fairly likely and would make for a nice little story maybe just Branch over stressing himself trying to make sure his first Christmas with his Brothers back is "" Perfect "".

but of course despite his over planning family Drama strikes maybe JD and Bruce get a bit petty and competitive over the family board games.

Clay keeps rearranging things in certain ways that he's used to organising things and Poppy and Viva keep getting crazy ideas for other fun stuff they could all do that don't mesh with Branch's planned out day. anyway in the end things all end up a mess due to the family chaos and Branch maybe loses his Rag a little with everyone. stating that he used to dream when he was a kid about having these big family special occasions and he just wanted a normal family Christmas for once given how many he spent without any of his family in his life.

only for him to go off somewhat upset but I feel his Brothers would go after him and apologise for the day not panning out like he wanted but also kinda light-heartedly point out that this is how these things usually go. back when their family was together their special occasions were always crazy and disorganised as hell and also Bruce would probably point out its the same every year with his other family. to steal a quote from one of my favourite episodes of Brooklyn nine nine where Jake and Amy's parents meet and chaos ensues I like to imagine Bruce's pep talk to Branch being somewhat similar.

Bruce= "" Hey Branch you know how you said you always wanted to have a big family Christmas? well I have a wife 13 children two parent in laws 4 Brother in laws 3 sister in laws and overall 16 nieces and nephews by marriage who spend every Holiday together I had the kind of family that you always dreamt of "" awkward silence. Branch= "" oh are you done? that seems like a really mean place to stop talking but you seem to be taking quite a long pause "" Bruce= "" when we were all together it was a Huge mess I can't tell you how many special occasions I've spent in the Hospital but that's part of what it means to have a big family like this one ""

I could maybe imagine something along these lines for some good old emotional Trolls cheese.

also FR tho I Hope it gets acknowledged in the next Holiday special how big something like this would probably be for Branch.

given so far since the first film he's had one Christmas that he spent with Poppy that being Holiday in Harmony ( don't forgot the first Holiday special doesn't actually take place at Christmas )

but before that he presumably spent every special occasion doing his own thing in the Bunker alone which is sad AF when you think about it especially when he was a kid 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

so the next specials gotta acknowledge how different this would be for him finally spending Christmas with a family in his life again when it hasn't been that way for him since he was a friggin baby.

like Daaaam if that don't make his Bros feel bad about themselves then I don't know what will.

i havent discussed this with alex at all but in my head they were kismet x y/n fics. her bias was boom and she was one of those "fans" thats disappointed he was gay bc it means she doesnt have a chance with him (as if she did before)

branch was always her least favourite, she never knew why he just gave her bad vibes. when she met him she mostly got over it. now she knows hes her uncle she kinda dislikes him again

currently reading: I am deciding between two sequels and I don't know which one I should read first: Hannah Whitten's For the Throne OOOOR Naomi Novik's The Last Graduate.

Sweet/spicy/savoury: Savory. Always. If there is a cheese platter, it's love, it's passion, it's kismet. However, I will eat a cookie when I need to calm down; I don't really care for sweets, but a little cookie always hits the spot.

last thing I googled: I was looking for the song I posted above to share here.

current obsession: my sims stories- they are so fun and relaxing- and accessible after a long day of work. (No, not vampires. That's hardly a current obsession- pssh).

currently working on: work! It's kicking my butt with very early mornings and long days. When things calm down a bit- and they will- I'll be able to do more of my hobbies.

11. Books/Authors who influenced you the most?

In terms of raw influence, it would probably be the Dresden files by Jim Butcher. These days, I've come to find it less tasteful than they were when I was a kid (a bit too much male power fantasy for my liking) but they had a huge impact on me as an 11 year old. The other one I loved was the original mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. Again, I felt it was ruined in my adulthood by all of his side novels, but I loved Vin so much as a kid

Across everything? It has to be this:

What does she know? She does not see the portentous auguries of annihilation, the subtle disruption of the equilibrium of kismet's naturality. Something has espied us, something that is in connection with the number seven. She, the benighted oblivious creature that she is, is incapable of comprehending the magnitude of the eldritch entities that jeopardize our feeble existence. My very core is filled with disdain at her obstinate ignorance, and it distracts me from my indagation.

It's the fanciest thing I ever wrote, and even though I'll never finish that story it remains in my heart for all eternity. (The character saying this is an eight year old who doesn't want to be put to bed)

💘 Is there any posted fic you want to rework/re-edit/re-write?

Honestly, I need to rewrite In Kismet Marcescence at some point to be Sagiverse instead of the mostly-canon that it was? Jesse needs to be there. I really like my prose for it, but I'd rather it be Sagiverse compliment. It'll probably end up a part of Soov, tbh.

🌈 is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?

So far unpublished, A Monstrous Manifesto. I've rewritten some of those chapters upwards of three or four times, and when I go back around to it, it's going to get completely rewritten again. And that'll be once I figure out the ending. ;~;

🎀 give yourself a compliment about your own writing

I am very good at the spatial awareness! I've read fics where it's not clear at all where someone is or their position, or the writer contradicts themselves repeatedly on positions and locations, and it's a headache. I almost never fuck that up.

🎈 describe your style as a writer; is it fixed? does it change?

Some little things tend to stick, some things are really variable. My style is pretty distinct, I think- I tend to write in a way that I think is readable, so it very much comes across in a way that is easy on the ears when spoken out loud. I can get very good with my purple prose, doing it in ways that sound poetic without becoming unwieldy.

One thing that does stay the same is dialogue, because I struggle a lot with combining action and dialogue. I do a lot of "blah blah," he said, voice low and husky or whatever; and then I don't add action until a new sentence. So it ends up being a lot of tell over show, which I'm working on sort of.

🎙️ which one of your fics would you like someone to make a pod-fic of?

Good fuckin' question, tbh. Most of the interludes for the fruit anthologies would make good podfic, I think - Streets of Gold might be one of my favourites. But I also don't listen to podcasts, so I'm the last person you should be asking. :p

💌 share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!

If I have time tomorrow - please work let me have time - I want to write some Knightbeste. Just really get into Knightley's head and see how he's Dealing with things.

Other than that, I do want to finish up Strawberries, if only because look, The Last Star of Morning and Streets of Gold are in Strawberries, and I think they're some of my best writing tbh. Unfortunately, that means having to write a couple I'm really effin' stuck on (lookin' at you, In the Shadow of the Forest) so we'll see.

My New Headcanon: Booth is totally a closet Swiftie

Ok, so i had this epiphany the other day whilst listening to the new version of Red on loop (and trust me when i say this has many layers and may get added to as i continue watching bones (currently on S8E4).

Booth is totally a T. Swift fan. He’s a romantic who kinda loves stereotypical gender roles and fairytale love stories. He would never admit this to the outside world bc hes so obsessed with his “Manliness”, but from the first time he heard Love Story on the radio back in 2009 (post brain surgery) and just perfectly pictured him and Bones as he listened to the lyrics it was kismet (and boy do we know that man believes in fate).

Some dot point details to follow:

- No one really knows the depth of his obsession, bc he generally saves listening for when hes alone or with Brennan (and/or later on with Christine) cos he knows shes sorta oblivious.

- He could swear he was almost outed when she had Love Story stuck in her head and was humming its tune on the platform and everyone was staring at her, but they all (except Angela) just convinced themselves that surely the great Dr Brennan wouldnt know Taylor Swift.

- Brennan mentioned at one point that Russ’ daughters were big fans and she was buying them tickets to go to a TS concert for Christmas and he immediately insisted on going as their chaperone for “their safety” bc hes an fbi agent after all so theyd be safest with him as all concerts always have crazy fans (not to mention they were getting the best tickets in the house and it sure beats the last time he went to a TS concert and got shitty tickets right in the back and wore a disguise).

- He listened and cried to “Breathe” after the happenings of the 100th on repeat, and thought of it again after TDitP.

- Two of his favourite songs are “Our Song” and “Oh My My My” because they remind him of the perfect relationship and remind him of Pops and his Grandmas story.

- He used to sing “Safe and Sound” to Christine when she was little as a sort of lullaby and still sometimes does when she needs comfort or asks him to.

- Her upbeat songs are his favourite to work out to (he especially likes “Shake it Off”, “We are Never Getting Back Together” and “22″.)

- He really wanted to punch John Mayer, Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal for causing her grief, but liked Harry and is happy for her and Joe Alwyn.

- Brennan doesnt really care for Taylor Swifts music/cant really tell it apart from other music but she has to admit that song about dancing in the precipitation in a very nice dress always makes her smile.

- Also as Christine grew/grows up he made sure she had Taylor Swift in her cd collection so he had a good excuse to have it in the house and an even better reason for going to her concerts. Christine doesnt like Taylor Swift as much as her Dad thinks she does but she will never tell him that.

Grading every Peter Lorre character from a movie I've seen Part 7

•Kismet-My Favourite Brunette(1947)

I think I've said before that, aside from Hans Beckert, Kismet is probably the least cute character peter has played in a film(if we're including radio that's another story), but that doesn't mean he's not still a lot of fun(or that he's not cute period, but that's besides the point). Anyway, I enjoy the competence and assertiveness of Kismet. It's nice seeing a Peter character get to consistently one up the people who try and dunk on him. There's that excellent scene where he embarrasses the cops who call him "alright for a foreigner" and it goes without saying how poorly it goes for Ronnie whenever he attempts to treat cuddles the way he probably thinks a Bogey character would treat someone like him. Infact between Kismets general cool demeanour, that knife throwing scene, Kismets smooth switching of the records, that scene where Ronnie gets repeatedly bonked on the head and the fact that Kismet seemingly makes it out fine(well, none of the bad guys are seen getting caught or anything, but unlike the others, Kismet wasn't even caught on camera) I wonder if a writer on this film was someone who watched the maltese falcon and aggressively sided with Cairo or thought Spade deserved to get taken down a peg. If so, I can certainly relate

7/10 he's a cool dude with a cool tude

•Felix Gillie-Comedy of terrors(1963)

Man! Felix is so sweet. And the way this poor bastard gets kicked around by Mr Trumbull throughout makes the ending so satisfying. I'm a fan of how pure his love for Amyrillis seems to be(My favourite example is probably when she's shrieking out her ballad to him while packing and he calls it "like a nightingale") but ofc for me the chemistry between Trumbull and Felix is the most enjoyable thing about this film, particularly where their attempts to kill Mr black are concerned. It's also nice that he and Trumbull work so well together since it stops me from being too disappointed by the lack of scenes between Peter and Boris, considering the chemistry I've come to expect from those guys being in a film together

6/10 I'm glad he survived and that he and Amaryllis got to be happy together

Welp! That'll do for now. I might come back to this series once I've seen another couple of Peter's films

I'll see how I feel, but it might be fun to do something like this again eventually, but with Peter Lorre caricatures and then after that maybe characters peter played on the radio(although that's a tall order and might have to be separated into different radio series, like one for Suspence, one for Mystery in the air etc.)

Ethan Freeman Phantom interview

An interview with Ethan Freeman from about 1994 or 1995, printed in “Beneath the Mask” #8 (which I haven’t found my print copy of yet, but the interview was reproduced on our old POTO fan site).

Also of note about Ethan: at the time he was one of the two youngest actors to have played the Phantom - he and Anthony Warlow were both 28 or 29 when first cast in the role.

Are there any differences between London and Vienna - if so, what are they? The general tone of the production in Vienna was slightly more Operetta-like, probably due to the language, the sound of the translation and style of acting of some of the players. The tempo was also at some points quite different depending on who was conducting, and would undoubtedly feel strange to me now. The audience tended to be less tuned in to the humorous moments in the show in general, and some scenes like "Managers I & II" for example, simply run better and are more clever in English.

How did you get the role? I got the role of the Phantom after auditioning for Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne and the Viennese producer and musical staff. They appeared very excited about the audition. I'd sung "Music of the Night" which they praised in a friendly manner (Hal is always positive and encouraging), and they sent me off to learn the segment from the Final Lair "Order your fine horses... This is the choice. This is the point of no return!" When I came back the next day to do it (the Phantom candidates appeared by then to have been reduced to three) Hal said "OK Ethan I want you to scare me!" So I did the section with as much power and venom as I could muster (Id never seen the show - I think Id heard the record once or twice...) and after it was done, Hal just said "Great. You scared me!" and that was that really. Later that day they explained to Alexander Goebel and me what they would like and would we be willing to share, obviously with Alex, who was very well known, being the dominant of the two. So we split 5/2 which frequently ended up being 4/3 as the run went along.

How did you research the character? I read the novel finally, all the way through. Ruth Hale, my partner in "Cats" at the time, later to premiere as Mme Giry in the Hamburg production, gave me a copy as a present. I'd seen several of the films over the years so I knew there wasn't much to be mined from those - although Lon Chaney Snr did display some magnificent body language, and I've nicked at least one dramatic gesture from him. Principally though, I had several long meetings with Hal in New York to talk about the role and show. He instructed me to go watch Michael a few times then come back and talk some more. Crawford was magnificent, at the peak of his vocal power and still fairly fresh in the role and I was moved and impressed as I have not been since by a Phantom. (Though Dave Willetts, I must say, also made a huge impression the first time I saw him, for his power and well-delineated psychotic behaviour.) At first I thought boy, you've got your work cut out for you on all fronts. So, I would say my "research" of the role was principally based on my own discussions with Hal and also largely on my own thoughts and feelings. Obviously most of the physical manifestations of the role, make-up, costume, blocking, etc were predetermined so there wasn't much scope for change. To be honest, I feel some of the Phantoms I've seen tend, in an effort to be different, to stray from the basic line of the drama and weaken themselves as a result. Michael's acting was extreme, yet very clear and economical at the same time, and I also try to offer the audience a complicated and ambiguous character going through clear, unambiguous moments of his life - otherwise it's so easy for the audience not to "get" everything that's there - or to "get" things that aren't intended to be there at all.

How do you feel on stage? So varied in thought and feeling that I can't really give a concise answer. I feel quite differently now to how I felt 600 odd shows ago. I used to have to concentrate on staying concentrated - now it just happens. I know what to achieve and just try to let it happen. I'd say I'm both in and out of Erik at the same time and he in me.

Do you think it's based on a true story ie. did the Phantom exist? I doubt it - I haven't read this newer novel "Phantom" yet and don't intend to until I finish playing the part. However I've been to the Palais Garnier and in all senses of the word it is a 'phantastic' theatre, one which easily conjures up many stirring images - beautifully represented in the Phantom designs, I'd say!

What do you think of Erik? I wish he'd let me have a little more time to myself! Oh, I don't know. He's a sad, bitter, brilliant man. He has a great brain and can be a real bastard. I find him easy to understand - he's motivated by a terrible profound loneliness and has been forced to create his own universe which has its own laws. Anyone who has known some kind of loneliness or feeling of apartness when they were children or growing up can tune in to this crucial aspect of the Man, which is his great mythical attraction. He is so powerful, awesome, in control and yet so hurt and vulnerable. He must epitomise great beauty and great ugliness at war with each other, reason and insanity, God/Satan, Id/Ego battling it out. In the end, he learns about sacrifice, shows mercy and is redeemed by love - a great, archetypal Romantic drama - another reason why the story has always been so popular. I can't stand it when I see Erik played as a "nutter". Yes, he goes "crazy" a few times, but in general he is not insane in the pathological sense. I feel if he is played as a schizophrenic or a psychopath, the romantic ideal of the story is dashed, because both of those conditions would indicate a "determination" that makes any hope of redemption impossible, and would break with the "Romantic" style. He is very melancholy, angry, egocentric, neurotic perhaps, and goes off into rages of frustrated sexuality, but he is not insane. And I'll kill anyone who thinks otherwise!

What do you think happens to him at the end? That's our little secret! I think the different fan magazines have probably spent pages on that so I don't see I need to contribute. He goes!

Why do you think the show is so appealing? Some lovely songs, great orchestrations, a nice mixture of melodrama and light comedy, some stunning sets and a lot of good theatrical magic: and on the thematic side, many of the things I've mentioned before, which I suppose you could define as the archetypal Beauty and the Beast scenario which, if honestly portrayed, can tug the heartstrings of even the most urbane Japanese businessman.

What is your favourite role of those you've played? Obviously Phantom is the supreme role in my repertoire to date. I did however, really enjoy my stints in other Lloyd Webber shows as well. Che in "Evita" was very cool to play and Gus/Growltiger, while exceedingly 'uncool' thanks to the heavy knitted costumes, was a joy to play, despite being totally knackering, and one that I was surely born to do. I really enjoyed doing Hajj, the Poet in "Kismet" with the BBC Radio 2 last year, working with the composers, and would love to have the chance to do that again on stage someday.

What role would you like to play? I'd quite hope to have a go at Sweeney Todd somewhere down the line and would still like to play the Celebrant in "Bernstein's Mass" at some point. (I've nearly done that a couple of times.) Add to that a heap of great operatic roles I'd love to do but probably never will and whatever new, unknown roles lie lurking up ahead. We'll wait and see!

End note from me - Ethan’s wrong about schizophrenia, but hey, this interview was 25 years ago and actors can’t be expected to be experts on mental illness. But I really love this interview, the depth he goes into, and how his sense of humour comes through too.

Summary: Contrary to popular belief Ichigo is surprisingly furtive with matters of the heart.

There is much weight behind words.

Ichigo knows that.

Words can wound, maim and bloody; just as readily as it gilds and evocates. Shakespearean sonnets and traditional haikus- the deceptively heavy undercurrents of emotions lurking behind the softness of nature- a flower blooming, the rain falling, of bodies stained by the colour of deepest devotion; closer in time, the indomitable will when Angelou took to the stage and bids rise to his disheartened soul; there is a common theme here.

A theme that holds true: words matter.

Beyond the glamour of words, the importance of intent: to say your piece and be direct with it.

Honesty spills over, inundating; making him a man of his word when he vows to let no false promises, no fake acquiescence pass through his lips but speak out when it matters, to call a spade a spade, to say it as it is and his words- let them be the truest reflection of his thoughts- good or bad.

In his silence he reads, devouring books, that of the written word; and regrettably it fills his heart with silly romantic notions.

I love y—

He bites down hard on his tongue, unable to bring himself to say the words. Certain phrases concerning the heart should never be used lightly. It is his sincerest belief that when the time is right the words will come.
