@amurderofcharacters asked: "I wanted to let you sleep for a little longer," Raile said as she fed Junior and noticed Brian coming in. "So I made us breakfast. Junior gets strained pears and a slice of bacon and we get breakfast burritos."
Brian hadn't slept so good in months. Years, if he really thought about it, not since his bed had been warmed by Elise. A memory that felt so distant, so missed, what had become of him and Raile was a beautiful blessing that he hadn't expected to come true. Never dreamed that love could be found again - decided that all had been lost with the death of his wife - could never be without it. Love that was had for Raile was boundless, endless. Powerful enough to leave Brian an utter mess of emotions; mind driven to insanity but for reasons much more pleasant than grief. Within her, he had found happiness. Romantic joys and hopes and dreams, soft kisses and ever warm embraces. Junior seemed all the better off since, too. And that, above all else, even his own feelings, mattered most to Brian.
"Strained pears? Damn. Our boy's eating like a king today!" Brian teased as he walked into the dining room, kissing the top of Junior's head as he walked by and to his own seat, a kiss for Raile, too. "Smells good. Thanks for all this, doll face. I guess the little bit of sleep did me good after all. After what we went through last night, I needed to regain my strength. You're a real minx, you know that?"
Biting into the burrito with a clear hunger, he said, chewing the bits first, "I actually wanted to talk to you about something, babe. It's... it's Elise's anniversary next week. I was thinking, maybe we could do something for her. For Junior. For us. You have any issue with that?"

☆Choose Your Rainbow☆
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡Pile one♡ Crystal: Citrine (Solar Plexus)
Your future holds a destined soulmate. Orange is the prominent color in this pile. Orange represents the Sacral chakra which rules over creativity, sexual energy, emotions and relationships. The self esteem card is in the center… this Twin/Soulmate will trigger you. They will make you see where you need healing, whether they are conscious of that or not. Do you deem yourself worthy of happiness? Make sure you continue working on your inner healing so you won’t reject the opportunity for happiness when it arises. Now, be aware that the roles could be reversed. Your Twin could reject the opportunity for themselves at first. If you don’t believe you deserve love, you won’t see it when it presents itself. Be patient and live with joy. The journey will be not always be smooth, but happiness is ultimately your right. You really can have it all, you’re not foolish. Dreams and reality are only separated by our bodies. Some of the best art was inspired by dreams, you know.
Tumblr media
༺Pile two༻ Crystal: Clear Quartz (Crown Chakra)
I don’t know what your life looks like, as this is a general reading, but I know suffering and endurance when I see it. Pain is represented in the color red, correlating with the Root Chakra (grounding, survival). Red is associated with anger, passion, excitement, aggression, lust and strength. Intuition is in the center… you’ve had this unspeakable feeling that you’ll come out on top in the end. It can’t always be so hard. Storms eventually pass. Pain gives away to healing. This pain, whatever it is for you, will be transmuted in your future. Sometimes growth can be painful, but remember this is just a part of the process. Green represents the heart chakra (love, jealousy). Green also stands for nature and growth. The intuition card is the middle, so follow your inner guidance. This is a very transformative era for you and it will not be understood by most.
Tumblr media
⊱Pile three⊰ Crystal: Agate (Throat Chakra)
Your road to truth is what will make you successful and happy. To commit to yourself, to commit to unraveling mysteries, and to search for your strongest self… this is the long journey you’re on. No, it is not easy being a Priestess/Priest. Your life has great meaning, your perceived loneliness is not without purpose. Spirituality might be overwhelming you at times, that is your sign to step back and gain perspective. For example, currently there are tons of people obsessed with Manifestation. Obsessed with it to the point they can potentially cancel out their own blessings. Spirituality must be balanced(heart chakra) with practicality. Referring to my Reflection card (throat chakra; logic, honesty and communication) Review your life so far, certain people or situations in your life can act like mirrors that reflect back at you and teach you. What you see can inspire you or you could see something you don’t like. If the latter happens, then you have the opportunity to make changes. Pile 3, you are here to leave a legacy. By name, by word or by blood. Show this world how a rise from the depths looks. In the center, this card represents the Divine presence that is always with you. You are always supported by the spirit world.
Tumblr media
⋆Pile four⋆ Crystal: Rose Quartz(Heart Chakra)
Another spiritual pile! The Divine wants to speak through you. Badly. You were born with the connection to spirit, which is why to yourself and to others, you don’t always seem “here”. You’re between two worlds. Our physical one and the spiritual (they co exist, never separated). You’ve had a hard time functioning in this world and it’s structures. That’s because you're meant to be different, you’re meant to gain wisdom from being different and share it. You have a lot of inner wisdom, carried from this life and past lives. People probably think you are an old soul and you are! You're a philosopher by nature. Always looking to learn the secrets of life. You have already found some(Illumination card; Solar Plexus. Self Esteem, Instincts). Discovering new truths isn’t always easy for people to stomach. For example, acknowledging that ghosts really do exist, that would cause a personal crisis for a a lot of people. This is one reason why not everyone sees ghosts/paranormal phenomena. With your knowledge, be gentle with others even when you’re faced with incredulous falsehoods. An example of that would be someone telling you what God approves and doesn't. God isn't some grumpy old man passing judgement on us from above, and you know this but many others are not ready to unlearn what they've been taught. Sometimes, time and experience is the best teacher so remember when someone challenges your beliefs, speak with love. You are the Divine's expression on Earth.
Tumblr media
ʚPile fiveɞ Crystal: Lapis Lazuli (throat and third eye chakra)
Come out, you’re hiding the powerful, beautiful, and creative person that is you. You have so many wonderful qualities and talents. Why don’t you give yourself a try? I know you’re afraid of the light because light casts shadow. You’re afraid to be vulnerable to others. Always remember, you only have to show or give that which feels good to you. You have it in you to be successful. Yellow is connected to the Solar Plexus chakra that sits over the stomach. It is associated with the sun, gold, divinity, positivity and self esteem. It also relates to illness or fear. Orange is represented by the Sacral Chakra. With Love being in the center and the tarot cards… my friend, if you can harness that determination in you, that Queen of Wands could very well be you in the future. I could really gush over the strength of this pile! There is a lot of creative energy here, as well. You are a passionate person and not just in a romantic sense. You’re determined to live unabashedly. Show us how to live our truth without shame.
Tumblr media
✧Pile six✧ Crystal: Green Aventurine (Heart Chakra)
In the center, Stability and Security. This is your root chakra. This pile comes from unstable roots (no shame). The hungry card isn’t about being hungry for food (but if you are, by all means get a snack!). The hunger card(Solar plexus chakra; stomach. Self esteem, instincts, confidence) is about craving something more. A craving for something that will nourish your soul. A deep wanting for something to fill you mentally, emotionally and spiritually. So, what is it that you desire so much? I am feeling like this pile has big dreams. You have the choice to live in a life imaginary. Pretending, playing make believe, is the first step to making your daydreams into reality. Let yourself play. Laugh at yourself when you trip, you’re a soul in a body that came to explore! Now, the Faith card (third eye chakra; intuition, psychic abilities) isn’t just about having faith in higher powers but it’s more about trusting that no matter what, things will be okay. Life is constantly shifting so just keep working towards your dreams and know that the outcome (Justice card) will lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.
Tumblr media
꒰Another general reading has arrived~ This is timeless, btw. It's my birthday month, so I'm celebrating in all ways I possibly can. That's why this pick a card is so colorful. I know things are uncertain, but there is a future. I hope to see you there, smiling.꒱
Remember, no rain... no rainbow ♡ all my love

Max Verstappen: The Legend Begins
The Legend Begins by Mawr and Silverberg is a song I once briefly heard in a show years ago. For some reason, I was like “Okay I’m gonna add this song to my music library.” I don’t think I ever listened to it after that day.
So, for years it just sat there, another song I once thought I would like, but never listened to. I’m not going to say I stumbled upon the song and thought it was perfect for Max. No, I was going through my library for inspiration when I listened to this song again.
While I could have gone for something a little more mainstream, there’s a handful of Taylor Swift songs that could easily be used for Max, this song felt perfect.
When I say perfect, I mean for 2020s Max, not the Mad Max era or baby Max, but the current Max.
The Legend Begins perfectly encapsulates Max at this moment as he continues to cement his legacy and dominance in Formula 1.
Never get to a point where
Where I'm ever gonna quit, no
I'm always pushin' harder
To be a champion, you need to have a champion mentality. With three on the grid this year, they all have this same mentality of never quitting. We could spend hours dissecting that and how it differs in each of them and which non-champions have that mentality, but this is about Max.
Max in 2023 is an undeniable force. He is winning everything. If you were to bet on Max winning, you would win that bet.
But despite winning everything and having both championships in the bag, Max is not quitting. He keeps pushing harder and harder. Taking that extra step in every race.
Max could be 20+ seconds in the lead and have the win in the bag, but he is still going to push for that fastest lap. If you're clear by that margin, the safe choice would be to just keep on pace and take the victory. But Max Verstappen is going to push, he's going to take that extra pit stop for fresh tyres, and he is going to take the fastest lap point.
Nothin' here is gonna stop me
Nothing's gonna bring me down, no
You gotta step on some heads when you reach for the crown
This verse could be analyzed in many different ways for Max and over his different eras.
Purely basing it on the 2023 season, it's Max getting booed by fans. (sidenote: booing is a very nuanced subject. the argument could be made that it's present in most sports but there's a difference between booing an individual and a team. then there's the matter of sports culture, expected codes of conduct, etc. however, I am strongly against booing during national anthems.)
Booing or criticism in general can be disheartening and bring people down. For criticism bringing someone down, think of Lando in Qatar when Oscar was doing better than him and won. Then he was asked by Nico Rosberg when he would win. And you could see that Lando was critical of himself and "down" that weekend.
But with Max, it's not bringing him down. When asked about it, Max said, "In the end, I'm the one bringing the silverware home."
He is beating everyone, and it is inevitable that he'll take the silverware home.
No you can't believe your eyes
But time is hard to take, yeah
Watch me show the world that I'm one of the kings
No rival, no pressure
No force on this earth
Never keep me from what has been mine since this birth
When the 2022 season came to an end, we thought that Max couldn't possibly dominate more. There was an expectation that Ferrari and Mercedes would get their cars right and close the gap. And when the 2023 season started, Ferrari and Mercedes weren't there, but Aston Martin was there and so was Sergio Perez.
But one by one, the rivals fell away. His teammate has spent more time in the midfield than fighting Max for wins. Aston Martin fell apart halfway through the season. Mercedes and Ferrari seemingly alternate on which weekends they'll be good and most of the time strategy or pit stops prevent them from being challengers. McLaren is on the up, but even they are unmatched for Max in the end.
No you can't believe your eyes:
A repeated phrase this entire season has been: "Well, he can't win everything." No one has wanted to believe that we would go this entire 2023 season with just Max leagues ahead of everyone else.
Never keep me from what has been mine since this birth:
The story around Max has always been when he'll win a championship, not if he'll win a championship. He has always been inevitable.
From the moment he skipped F2 to sign with Toro Rosso to winning his first race with Red Bull in 2016 to fighting for the championship, it has always been a matter of when.
This is where the legend begins
At the end of the day, this is just the beginning of Max Verstappen and the stories that will be written about him in the annals of F1.
Max was dominant in 2022, and he’s gotten even more dominant in 2023. Unless Red Bull have a major fuck up, they’ll still be at the head of the pack. Red Bull as the one team to get the car right, doesn’t have the same disadvantage as other teams trying to close the gap. So, at the very least, until the regulations change, we’re looking at a Red Bull/Max Verstappen era.

Hi bestie, loved your last post about the hypocrisy behind defending Joe versus Karlie. Are you a Kaylor historian? 🤭 Or do you know someone who is? Does anyone have sourced reasoning tied to why people turned on Karlie? Or was it all purely based in rumors and hearsay? I just don’t know the history that well surrounding what caused the (supposed) rift (both them drifting apart publicly and anything that’s as said). Just the general fallout.
Calling on all Kaylor experts too!!
I just have always been curious because it feels like people always say she betrayed Taylor by telling Scotter personal details but is there any “proof” or “evidence” people use to base those claims in? Thanks!!
- ❣️ curious Kaylor/gaylor who doesn’t believe Karlie is the villain some fans make her out to be
Hi lovely anon! Thanks for the support 🥰
I am far from a historian, but I have enjoyed studying up on this myself. I’ll give it my best, and if I miss any important details, everyone else is welcome to chime in as well! We’ve got a great community around here with lots of knowledge. (If anyone has links to the many Tumblr posts documenting the below in more detail, please share! I know we’ve got so much of their timeline mapped out with photos and evidence. This is just my overview, as I’m currently in the office working.)
In short, the rumors were largely unfounded.
To fully get the context of the “rift” between them, I think it’s important to note that their public friendship which had once been very loud and affectionate dimmed significantly after they were caught on video kissing at the 1975 concert in December of 2014 (kissgate). People were already speculating that they were no longer friends anymore, but they were still occasionally seen together, and Karlie maintained in an interview that she and Taylor were still very close.
I think that background is important, as it had Swifties on high alert and ended up setting the scene for what happened next.
Come the masters heist just as Lover era kicked off, Perez Hilton posted a gossip tweet alleging that Karlie might have shared information with Scooter. This was a baseless claim which came only from the fact that she was contracted with Scooter as her manager at the time and thus was seen at gatherings where he was present. It’s worth noting that as soon as her contract with Scooter was up, Karlie ended that business relationship and found new management.
Swifties, however, ran with that narrative. From one gossip column whose author is known to create drama, rather than reporting news. This was not at all like with Taylor and Joe’s “breakup” news, which was reported by reputable magazines and publications that Taylor has always had positive relationships with.
The only proof these Swifties have of these rumors comes in the form of Ashley Avignone and Claire Winter, two friends of Taylor, “liking” Perez’s tweets regarding this. Those likes are gone now, though, and the tweets wiped from the internet (though their legacy unfortunately has lived on and mutated into something vile). I think it’s very interesting and important that the tweets are gone, because one has to wonder why. Who had it removed? What happened to those “likes?”
Meanwhile, Karlie has always denied any claims that they fell out, and she famously tweeted “I will not allow the media to misconstrue my words. Taylor has always had my back, and I will always have hers.”
Tumblr media
That tweet is still there. Taylor did not have that one wiped from the internet.
And, as Taylor Swifts friends and family are quickly jumping ship and unfollowing Joe on social media (Austin, Ryan Reynolds, and the Haim sisters all did in the last day), many of Taylor’s closest friends continue to publicly support Karlie (including Ryan, Haim, and Selena Gomez, who is supposed to be Tay’s best friend). Even Abigail (Taylor’s childhood bestie) still follows Karlie, which I think is the most telling thing of all. If these people would all be moved to unfollow Joe because of an allegedly amicable breakup, it would make even more sense for them to unfollow Karlie and keep as much distance as possible—if there really had been this big, world-ending betrayal, that is.
But there was no betrayal. Just one—ONE—rumor started by one man, and an entire misogynistic generation that went on a witch-hunt to make Karlie as miserable as possible. To this day, people harass Karlie over it, and she remains polite and strong.
The treatment of Karlie has always bothered me, but it stands out even more now as I see the same Swifties jump to Joe’s defense over far less egregious claims (with far more evidence of truth to them).
Again, if anyone has links to outlines of kissgate, early lover era (or even how it appeared Taylor was about to come out at that time), or anything else I’ve mentioned here, please share! I know there are so many resources here on our little hellsite, but as I’m working right now, I don’t have time to dig for them.
Anon, I hope this was helpful and enlightening! There is so much history and context here that it can be kind of like opening a hot oven door and getting blasted with the heat 😅 but I encourage you to take your time and explore what the Kaylor community has to offer here on tumblr, because there is so much right at your fingertips.
Thanks for reaching out!

Women of the Present
We live in an era where society continues to hold women to such a different standard and point of view lower than the other gender. Whispers of disbelief echo loudly with stereotypes and continue to give limitations to the power they have. The thought of women in the past whose cries for help were ignored and whose ideas were disregarded lingers. Women have been told, “You are just a woman” countless times, and today, that perspective must be changed.
On the moment a little girl takes their first breath to a woman who was taught to stand tall, women have been confined to narrow boundaries and limited opportunities, unable to showcase their true potential. Yet, time and again, despite the challenges they face simply for being women, their resiliency and strength go beyond, freeing themselves from harsh words and discrimination to preserve future generations' inclusivity.
Moreover, women, without a doubt, persistently excel in different fields usually dominated by men, proving that gender is not a hindrance to success. Throughout the years, the Philippine Military Academy has allowed females to perform combat duties. Building companies inside and outside the country are now hiring female construction workers. As a regular passenger, you will witness women driving jeepneys, tricycles, and even trucks! There are also numerous female topnotchers in every Philippine Licensure Examination. In the Senate, some empowering women, both past and current, have been chosen to lead by example and represent and govern fellow Filipinos. Unlike in the past, women today can have education, vote, run for office, and serve as leaders. Women can now amplify their voices and be recognized for their abilities.
Exceptionally, women proved they could be doctors, too. In sports, women showed the nation that no amount of weight can weigh a woman down. In the arts, they are our country’s legacy for creating art using local materials. In the entertainment industry, women keep making waves by showcasing the unmatched talent of Filipino women. Filipino women have made multiple contributions to the humanities, arts, business, and academics, among other fields, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries. Indeed, women are the backbone of society. Their determination and indomitable spirit hold the society together. Women are here, there, and everywhere. Despite the obstacles they faced before, women continue to break through stereotypes with every step they take.
Notably, as the nation celebrates the 2024 National Women's Month with the theme "Lipunang Patas Sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan!" let us honor and respect every Filipino woman for their contributions to our nation's progress while also reaffirming our commitment to women's empowerment and gender equality. The government must continue to give support by training women for jobs traditionally done by men to enhance their skills further. These women continue to leave an indelible mark on society and have been catalysts for social transformation. Their tenacity continues to serve as a beacon of hope. May every citizen strive for a society where women are valued, respected, and allowed to succeed. As one, let's acknowledge women's boundless abilities, shaping a bright future that embraces all—for the fate of women lies within the hands of every woman in the present.
***
I wrote this essay as my entry in the recent online essay writing contest organized by our municipality's gender and development committee in celebration of International Women's Day, which placed second in the English category.
Thank you to everyone who extended their support, especially to my family & friends. My sincerest thanks to my parents for checking my essay before I submit them, and to Montalban GAD for organizing this writing event. Happy Literature Month and long live to all the women of the present and future!

Facing History
Outside, baptisms, weddings and funerals I haven't attended church my entire adult life. I haven't lived in the South since I was 16. Nevertheless both the Episcopal Church and the South are part of my identity.
Recently I dove head first down a rabbit hole on the subject of John Henry Hopkins: ironmonger, musician, lawyer, theologian, architect and the eighth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. He was an important figure in local Pittsburgh history, which I hadn't known before. There were many connections to make which had me clicking from article to article. And then I landed on an article by Woody Register, In Their Own Words: An introduction John Henry Hopkins--first Bishop of Vermont, artist and architect, and defender of slavery, which put a damper on the hagiography of Hopkins emerging in my brain.
The article was in Meridiana: The Blog of the Roberson Project on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation at Sewanee. Many of the most influential people in my young life had attended Sewanee:The University of the South. My attention shifted from john Henry Hopkins to The Roberson Project.
"The Roberson Project on Slavery, Race and Reconciliation at the University of the South is a six-year initiative investigating the university's historical entanglements with slavery and slavery's legacy."
I spend way too much time at Youtube and it seems that I can't view a video without viewing a commercial for Hillsdale College. I wonder if that's because Google's algorithm "knows" those commercials particularly aggravate me--high engagement--or whether every American must see those damnable commercials? Anyhow Hillsdale's 1776 Curriculum (paywall at NY Review of Books. This article at Brown Political Review is open.) is in sharp contrast to Sewanne's approach to history. What's especially important about the differences is the view of the present and towards the future.
Emptywheel is a favorite blog. On the weekends Ed Walker writes posts that are a bit like a book discussion forum. Recently he did a series on the reconstruction era. In the last post in that series he noted that in his education as a young person that he had " no memory of any of the history I’ve discussed in this series." There's a concerted effort to ensure that students today be ignorant about our history of legally enforced and violently imposed racial segregation. A rational for much of the current "anti-woke" legislation is to save white children from discomfort. I was struck by the anger Walker felt in uncovering the history. Surely some students today will be enraged discovering what was hidden from them in school.
The Civil Rights Movement forced a paradigm change about race. And the struggle continues. Hiding that knowledge from children is madness.
Blundering around Sewanee's Website I read a profile of the first Black graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences, Nathaniel “Bubba” Owens, class of 1970. In 1966 the year Owens enrolled, the Episcopal school I attended had to confront how to respond to segregation. The school decided to enroll Black student beginning in kindergarten. A decision that seems "weak sauce" but is more significant when taking into account the proliferation of "Christian" schools in the South in response to court-ordered school desegregation. There were close associations between my school and Sewanee. I'm pretty confident the Black football player at Sewanee was known to some of the folks trying to forge a path for my old school.
The Robeson Project is named for Houston Roberson the first African American to earn tenure at the University of the South. Robertson died too young and was clearly well regarded at the University. But the naming the project for him points to a fundamental change in perspective. In 2009 he wrote an essay for the University's sesquicentennial volume.
"Dr. Roberson sought to show that African Americans, race, and racial conflict were “not a ‘Negro’ problem but an American problem.” Likewise, the history of slavery and its legacies at the University of the South is “not a ‘Negro’ problem,” but a Sewanee problem."
White Americans facing this country's history is something to celebrate. Not in a "that's mighty white" sense of goodness and righteousness. But in the more practical sense that the possibility of reconciliation and justice require a foundation of truth.

WELCOME TO OUR THIRD ANNUAL COMIX OF THE YEAR SHOWCASE!
Boy, what a year it’s been for comics! I’ve read 126 completed series this year (with a grand total of 313 series over all, and that’s not counting single issues or currently ongoing series!) and I’ve come to actually own 558 physical single issues!
If last year I talked about falling deeper in love with the medium, then this year I’ve dedicated myself to learning its history by getting into books & magazines about comics -- the (presently available) entirety of Alter Ego, Back Issue!, Comic Book Creator/Artist, All-Star Companion Vol. 1-3, The Golden Age of Comic Fandom and Our Artists at War have been some of my favourite things to read this year and they haven’t made this list solely because I’m talking comics and only comics, but please know they’ve meant a great deal to me and have already influenced me deeply and contributed to the kind of reader/fan I’ve become and would like to continue being. Hell, I’ve even gotten to experience the once-unthinkable honour of writing for Back Issue! and interviewing some of my heroes!
And speaking of once-unthinkable things, the fact that we’ve gotten a total of three JSA books complete with an ongoing this year? I don’t even have words for what that means to me! Suffice to say, it’s been THE year of comics as far as I’m concerned. So, without further ado, here’s our winners:
The New Golden Age (2022) It’s a one-shot but my god, what a one-shot it is! This book is what every longtime fan of the original Justice Society of America has dreamed of for decades, eager to acknowledge the team’s entire history across the years and its significance along with adding something new and exciting to the old and revered. I cried reading this, which is admittedly true for most things I love, but it’s a book like this that illustrates perfectly what the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide had meant in 1995 when they’d called the creation of the team second only to the invention of the superhero. I can’t think of a more beautiful way to announce the coming of a new JSA era!
Doomsday Clock (2017) A very take-it-or-leave-it kinda book, I know, and the intensity with which I came to love Doomsday Clock was a surprise even to myself but I genuinely believe it’s the series of the past decade. End of. It takes a special kind of fan to love what it says and does and means but a story about grief and love and legacy, a story that’s in effect about comic book history, that puts the JSA -- Alan Scott, specifically -- at its centre? You know I’m gonna be there. The ending in particular made me sob like no comic ever has before and when Jon understood Superman’s true purpose, I finally did too. “The rocket arrives. A child is loved. Superman is made.” That changed it all for me. I think Doomsday is also one of those rare books where a happy ending is a legitimately daring narrative choice, and the risk is more than worth it. One last stray thought to finish up this section: I’ve legitimately never found a more frighteningly real, deliciously well-written gay story in comics like Carver Colman’s entire arc here.
Before Watchmen: Minutemen (2012) Minutemen’s a book that likes to linger in its hurt, like pressing on a bruise for the hell of it and sitting with the ache. We know the outcome from the very first page, and Darwyn Cooke’s art is as melancholy as his writing. I’ve come back to this one again and again, sometimes just to look at it. As a Golden Age of Comics lover and enjoyer, the tragedy (the shipwreck!) of the Minutemen is precisely what I’ve always understood as implicit to the JSA and to see it all spelled out made it an absolute favourite in an instant.
Watchmen (1986) Hey, this list’s already dominated by Watchmen-adjacent books so, why not the original? My first thought upon finishing it was that the hype had been real this whole time and I couldn’t believe I’d lived my life blissfully unaware of everything this book has to offer. It’s still timeless, it still hits hard and it’s still a testament to the kind of love for comics that Alan Moore will never again show (and that Geoff Johns followed up perfectly in Doomsday Clock despite what you might’ve heard, after all at the core of Watchmen lies a truly encyclopedic knowledge of comic books and that’s a thing born out of love alone). All that being said, it ranks where it does because what’s always interested me in Watchmen has been the shadow of the story underneath the story, that of the Minutemen.
Nathaniel Dusk (1984)/Nathaniel Dusk II (1985) The quintessential film noir, in comic book form. Gene Colan’s art makes the miniseries but Dusk is a truly unique outing no matter how you look at it, and its status as ostensibly set in the real world makes it all that more fascinating. Nathaniel Dusk is a hardboiled detective whose career is marred by too-personal tragedy, and the book’s custom-made for anybody’s who’s as big on character studies and character-driven pieces as I am.
Manhunter (1973) There’s a lot that’s special about Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson’s most enduring creation, there’s no doubt about that, but I loved Manhunter so much it gave way to something within me that I’ve genuinely never experienced before: the day after I finished reading it I went out and bought the hardcover, the week after that I got the action figure, and by now I’ve bought every single special or trade these Detective Comics (1937) #437-443 backups have ever been collected or appeared in. It’s a story that begs to be interacted with in some real tangible way, that’s all I can say! James Robinson spoke once about what a phenomenon this had been when it’d first came out -- with its then-novel use of ninjas, violence like something out of an exploitation film, the very serious matter of a man killing to regain his identity (his soul!) and ultimately dying having done so -- but there’s no denying the impact hasn’t lessened any. Among the comics of any era, Manhunter is a stark outlier and a necessary breath of fresh air.
Flashpoint Beyond (2022) This little series somehow manages to outshine the event of the summer and just about all that’s followed it. Ostensibly a tie-in to Dark Crisis and theoretically bridging the gap between Doomsday Clock and The New Golden Age (year of Geoff Johns anyone?), what Flashpoint Beyond really is beyond all the pretexts is a deep-dive into a deeply traumatized man’s psyche. The book’s primary conflict is man vs. narrative as Flashpoint Thomas fights and fights against the very story he’s in until he can’t anymore. He refuses to play the hero the inhabitants of the Flashpoint world expect him to be but his rallying cry of ‘nothing matters’ because he’s seen his life destroyed twice over is ignored even by the story insisting him on placing him in the ill-fitting role of Batman, and the construction of this book is certainly something to see.
Cinder & Ashe (1988) I’m a great big fan of character-driven pieces, as we already know, and an even bigger fan of standalone miniseries that you simply can’t put down, throw in Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez’s art in the mix and I’m unlikely to ever stop thinking about it. At its heart, Cinder & Ashe is a story about the Vietnam war but it’s also a harrowing mystery thriller set in New Orleans and an exploration of racism, the military complex, and two lives consumed by grief. There’s very little I can say that won’t spoil the story but it’s here for a reason and I’d be willing to call it a legitimate all-time favourite by now.
The Night Force (1982) This is a real gem of DC’s horror/supernatural line and most certainly Marv Wolfman’s best work despite his decades in the business. A thoroughly entertaining and wildly compelling book, Night Force accomplishes the incredible feat of successfully balancing a main character that’s a complete enigma with a supporting cast of fallible all-too-human, all-too-real characters. If Baron Winters’ entry into the DC Universe at large is its most lasting impact, then Jack Gold is its true protagonist. As far as I’m concerned, there’s few sequences as sincerely terrifying and viscerally uncomfortable as the climax in issue #7 as Jack lies to save his life -- to save the world -- and the narration goes something like “He must spend a lifetime with this woman he does not care about. He does not love her, yet… yet there is that thing deep within Vanessa, that darkness that may again rise forth if she ever learned the truth. And Jack Gold cries. The horror is all his, the horror is all his.” I think about this so much and so often! For the obvious reasons, it’s quite possibly my favourite -- and one of the earliest -- gaycoded character arcs I’ve ever read.
Scribbly (1948) I’m a humor book aficionado, I’m practically Keith Giffen’s #1 fan, I read Ambush Bug (& Son) every time I’m feeling down, I like to think I know my stuff from Sugar & Spike to Bizarro Comics and whatever else you’ve got but-- Shelly Mayer’s Scribbly is a revelation. The grandfather of all humor comics and first published in 1936 by Dell Comics ‘till his move to All-American and then the above solo at National Comics (a man of the world!), the eponymous boy cartoonist is Mayer’s autobiographical creation and makes for one of the most startlingly clever, laugh-out-loud funny books I’ve read in my entire life. Scribbly isn’t just a fascinating case study in where the majority of gags we now take of granted originated or likely the world’s first autobiographical comic strip, it’s also sincerely creative, shockingly modern and firmly in a class of its own!

Disco Music: The Rhythm that Made the World Groove
In this blog, we will dive into the golden era of disco music and explore how this genre revolutionized the industry and became an unstoppable cultural force.
Disco music flourished in the 1970s, offering an irresistible combination of catchy rhythms, infectious melodies, and lyrics that invited people to party. This genre was characterized by vibrant orchestral arrangements, the use of synthesizers, and, of course, the iconic "dance floor" where dancers dazzled with their unique moves and styles.
One of the most emblematic moments of disco music was the rise of nightclubs, where music and culture merged into a dazzling spectacle. These places became havens of fun, liberation, and expression, where people from different backgrounds and lifestyles came together to enjoy music and dance all night long. The artists who took center stage during this peak were true icons of disco music, such as the Bee Gees with their unmistakable vocal style and hits like "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever." Donna Summer, known as the "Queen of Disco," captivated the world with her powerful voice and songs like "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls." Another notable artist of the era was KC and The Sunshine Band, known for songs like "That's the Way (I Like It)" and "Get Down Tonight." These artists and many others marked a golden era in disco music history and contributed to its lasting legacy.
Disco music was not only a form of entertainment but also had a significant impact on society. Breaking racial and gender barriers, disco music became an inclusive movement that brought together people from diverse communities. Nightclubs were places where diversity was celebrated, and disco music served as a vehicle to promote equality and respect among individuals.
Furthermore, disco music became a voice for liberation and personal expression. Songs like Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," an anthem of overcoming and empowerment, became an inspiration for those facing adversity. Another example is Patrick Hernandez's "Born to Be Alive," which conveyed a message of living life to the fullest and embracing one's own identity. These songs and many other disco music hits became anthems for those seeking to find their own voice and break free from social constraints.
Fashion was also influenced by disco music. Extravagant outfits, bell-bottom pants, sequins, and bright colors became distinctive elements of the disco style. Nightclubs became true fashion showcases where people displayed their best attire to stand out on the dance floor.
In summary, disco music reached its peak in the 1970s, but its influence has transcended to the present day. The rhythmic and characteristic elements of disco music are still present in many current music genres, and its iconic songs continue to be part of the popular repertoire. Disco music left a mark not only in the music industry but also in society, breaking barriers and celebrating diversity. It is a lasting legacy that reminds us of the power of music to bring people together and convey emotions, which was always its reason for existence.

Now that I look at these covers they use to promote this new Dawn of DC era again, I originally thought that these characters getting presented as the legacy of their big heroes would mean we would get books/arcs with them. And maybe they will get to feature in arcs here and there? But except for Jon none of these characters will have their own book after February when I am Batman ends.
Jace's book ends and while I believe I heard somewhere that John Ridley wants to continue writing him there is nothing confirmed yet. There are no news on where Damian will end up after Batman vs Robin and Lazarus Planet conclude in February. From everything I heard about the current Flash run Avery Ho isn't in it, the focus is more on Wally, Barry and their immediate family. The Green Lantern books DC has announced for 2023 so far are about Hal Jordan and John Steward, not Jo. I think Yara is still a supporting character in Wonder Woman, but Diana is the main character. There currently is no Aquaman book and they haven't announced one yet either, let alone one lead by Jackson Hyde. Except for that one Titans Academy kid I have no idea why these characters are presented as the Titan's legacy. Red Canary was inspired by Black Canary and Flatline was mentored by Lord Deathman. The new Shazam title DC announced only talked about Billy, not about Malik.
Does DC want to throw most of these characters in a new Teen Titans book or something like that? I hope not, I'm still traumatized from Damian's last Teen Titans stint. Or maybe DC just picked these characters for the promo artwork to look more diverse than they actually are right now.

From Radio Stars to Dance Floor Mavens: A History of DJing
The rhythmic pulse that drives you on the dance floor, the smooth transitions that keep the energy flowing, the unexpected track that drops just the right beat – these are all the handiwork of the DJ, a role that has evolved significantly throughout history.
Today, we embark on a journey tracing the fascinating timeline of DJing, from its humble beginnings to its current status as a vibrant art form.
The Birth of the Disc Jockey (1935):
Our story starts in the 1930s with the rise of radio. While playing recorded music wasn’t a new concept, American radio commentator Walter Winchell coined the term “disc jockey” in 1935, specifically referring to radio personality Martin Block, who gained fame for his captivating introductions and selections of popular music on the airwaves.
From Radio to Dancehalls (1940s):
Fast forward to the 1940s, and the seeds of the modern DJ were sown. In 1943, British radio DJ Jimmy Savile took things a step further, hosting the world’s first DJ dance party in England. He is also credited (though contested) with pioneering the use of two turntables for continuous playback, a technique that revolutionized DJing. Meanwhile, in Paris, 1947 saw the opening of the “Whiskey à Go-Go,” considered the first commercial discothèque, further solidifying the connection between recorded music and dance culture.
The Vinyl Revolution and the Rise of the Superstar DJ (1960s-1970s):
The 1960s and 1970s witnessed the golden age of vinyl records and the rise of the iconic DJ figure. DJs like Grandmaster Flash in the US and Kool Herc in Jamaica began experimenting with innovative techniques like scratching, beat juggling, and mixing, transforming the DJ from a music selector into a creative force. This era also saw the birth of genres like hip-hop and disco, further cementing the DJ’s role as a cultural influencer.
Technological Advancements and the Digital Age (1980s-present):
The 1980s saw the introduction of compact cassettes and CDs, offering DJs new tools for their craft. The 1990s ushered in the digital age, with the rise of MP3s and DJ software like Traktor and Serato, fundamentally changing the way DJs play and store music. Today, DJs utilize a diverse range of equipment, from traditional turntables to digital controllers and even AI-powered systems, pushing the boundaries of creativity and pushing the sound forward.
A Legacy of Innovation and Evolution:
From their radio roots to the dance floor dominance, DJs have come a long way. Their role has transcended simply playing music; they are curators, storytellers, and artists, shaping the soundscapes of generations and leaving an undeniable mark on popular culture. As technology continues to evolve, the future of DJing promises even more exciting possibilities, with the boundaries between music selection and creation constantly blurring. So, the next time you lose yourself in the rhythm at a club or festival, remember the rich history and innovative spirit of the DJ, the maestro behind the music.

Anonymous asked: Niccola should be pretty far long now with your second child. Are you having a boy or a girl? Have you picked out the child's name yet? How are you feeling this time around?
Closer and closer was the day getting. A second nursery decorated from the floor to the ceiling, so many pictures on the walls and toys and blankets, Brian and Niccola could practically already feel their new baby within their hands. Shenanigans this time around kept to a minimum - it was mother and father together from the start - Junior was just as excited. A little bundle of curls that bounced with impatience, always searching for the baby, asking about the baby. He was almost as bad as his father. Almost, but not quite, the Loose Cannon hadn't kept his mouth shut for a second since Niccola told him the good news. All around him knew of his blessed fortune. His happiness and more; to be surrounded by his beloved wife and children was heaven to Brian. A forever broken ankle bothered him little. A career that fizzled out couldn't shatter his spirits, cloud nine was were he walked.
"Listen, sweetheart, I don't give out such valuable information for free, okay?" Brian teased, smile a touch devilish. "You want answers? You'll have to pay for them. I hear the WWF'll be running a feature story about me and my family. I think they're calling it: 'The Loose Cannon: His Soldiers DO Swim!' You should find what you're looking for there. But, hey, since you've been so nice to me, I will let you in on a few secrets. Me and Nickie, we've got a few names picked out. Won't tell you what they are, but we do have a list. It's a good one, too. As far as my feelings go, I couldn't be happier. Honestly, this is the happiest I've ever been, except for the birth of my boy Junior and the day I married my woman, but I'm sure you get the idea."
"Fatherhood, it's awesome! Don't let any of these nerds tell you otherwise. Making babies and having them, it's a blast. You see all these young wrestlers now-a-days talking about, oh, 'I don't wanna have kids! It'll ruin my career!' Let me tell you, they're a bunch of damn liars. Having kids, it's been the greatest thing to ever happen to me. It saved my life. I look forward to it. Who knows? Maybe me and the wifey will start our own community. Maybe we'll have a nest of 12 kids? Wouldn't that be fun for you and the rest of the world?"

DIOR: WEAVING A FUTURE OF SUSTAINABILITY AND DIVERSITY INTO THE FABRIC OF FASHION
Tumblr media
As we nestle into an era where the zeitgeist demands not just style but substance from luxury brands, Dior emerges as a beacon in the efforts towards sustainability and diversity within the industry. Let’s delve into the intricate tapestry of measures and initiatives that Dior has embraced to address these pivotal issues, as these are not just trends but the very tenets of what modern consume conscious ethos expects from the high echelons of fashion houses.
Tumblr media
Embroidering Environmental Responsibility: Dior’s Green Initiatives
At the vanguard of Dior’s mission for a greener tomorrow is an unwavering commitment towards a more sustainable fashion industry. The brand’s strides in sustainability are marked by a push for transparency, as indicated by its performance in the Fashion Transparency Index.
The fashion house has taken actionable steps towards mitigating climate impact. By ardently reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meticulously initiating a renovation project, Dior is actively decreasing its environmental footprint. These tweaks and adjustments in its operations, though seemingly minor stitches in the vast fabric of climate solutions, are pivotal in trimming the brand’s global warming potential.
Dior’s approach to conscious material usage, while still in its nascent stages, underlines a fundamental rethinking of their resource narrative. Though responsible materials currently represent a fraction of their product compositions, the intensity at which the brand is confronting these sustainability challenges presents a hopeful picture for future collections.
Tumblr media
Upholding the Threads of Society: Dior’s Diversity Endeavors
Parallel to the environmental dialogue is Dior’s concerted emphasis on diversity and inclusion — a tapestry boasting inclusivity in every fiber. The company embraces a basic diversity policy that extends from its showrooms to its supply chains, ensuring that the echoes of inclusivity reverberate at every level.
Dior’s campaigns speak volumes, with initiatives like the Gris Dior campaign mirroring the diversity of a new generation. By celebrating individuality and varied cultural backgrounds, Dior coats its legacy in modern hues, striving to reflect the world’s rich mosaic.
Furthermore, the brand’s advocacy for women’s empowerment has been both vocal and substantial. Dior’s leadership in championing female potential is not just a fleeting campaign but an enduring commitment, woven deeply into the brand’s overarching narrative.
Tumblr media
Stitching Forward: Areas for Improvement in Dior’s Sustainability Fabric
While Dior’s pursuit of sustainability and diversity is commendable, it accentuates the need for a continuous reevaluation and advancement. The course towards a fully sustainable brand involves fortifying the weave with increased use of responsible materials and ensuring living wages throughout the supply chain.
Diversity, while celebrated in campaigns, must extend beyond the radiance of marketing and integrate more profoundly into corporate structure and decision-making hierarchies within Dior’s echelons.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: The Continuous Unfolding of Dior’s Progressive Patterns
In conclusion, Dior paints an ambitious picture of a brand that is determined to dress the world not only in elegance but in eco-conscious and ethically sound principles. Yet, the brand must not rest on its laurels but should continuously tailor its strategies for an ever-evolving global narrative that values people and the planet alongside profit.
From each thread of environmental effort to every fabric of societal impact, Dior’s ongoing journey toward sustainability and diversity is both a clarion call and a beacon for the wider fashion industry. By intensifying these initiatives, maintaining transparency, and stitching inclusivity into every piece, Dior not only adorns its clientele with the exquisite but also clothes itself in the nobility of purpose. This is the new definition of luxury — a legacy interwoven with the threads of a better world.
