#Narutoverse timeline
x-authorship-x · 1 year
Note
I did NOT think of that, good call lol. I'm like super curious about your naruto timeline because we all know Naruto is like... a mess and a half and like, everyone knows its a mess and a half but no one has the time to fix the naruto timeline and make it all neat n stuff. (plus, the lack of world building on other elements which makes it even harder to build the time line and now my heart hurts 😀😀)
The ShiObi AU literally does not have any timeline and their ages are ambiguous because i'm too lazy to actually fix the mess that is Naruto. So the fact you actually made a timeline??? props to you!!!
- N
N-anon... You don't know what you've unleashed
Disclaimer: I wrote this Timeline almost exactly three years ago and my reasoning for some decisions has been lost/forgotten. This timeline is specifically for HOPE AU (No Tomorrow, Until Dawn Breaks) and is updated every time I update the fic. Do NOT try to use my timeline against me down the line to fact-check my own work. Do NOT try to correct this timeline against canon events, this AU diverts from canon far beyond a single 'turning point' (e.g Shisui's time travel).
MY TIMELINE: Konohan Reckoning

Y64: Rookie9 starts at the academy(8). Danzo(58) steals Shisui(19/20)'s eye. Shisui commits suicide. Itachi(15/16) activates his Mangekyou and kills the Uchiha Clan(Mikoto 36, Fugaku 40) with Tobi(22), leaving Sasuke(8...9?) the sole survivor. Kakashi(22/23) leaves ANBU. (Genma23/24, Raidou23/24, Tenzo17/18.). Shisui wakes 2 months in the past and confides in Inoichi, Squad Two and Mikoto. Danzo(58) is beheaded by Mikoto(36) after shisui steals back his grandfather’s eye. ROOT are reunited with family. Tenzo meets Sai and Shin. Shisui becomes official Consultant between T&I and ANBU and liaisons between Uchiha and Hokage. Mikoto becomes a Hime Elder in the Hokage’s advisory council.
I add characters/events to the timeline as and when i need them. This is only part of the timeline, since any further back uses different reckoning and any further forward is straight up spoilers for the other three arcs/stories in HOPE AU 😂 there are also slight differences in events according to other villages, Kiri and Uzushio especially have minor amendments that I edited out for readability's sake
Final Note: if anyone uses my timeline to make their own, please credit me at least in name because this took days and actual math. If I find this reposted anywhere, I will be extremely aggravated

The history in fiction: Parallels between historical Japan and the Narutoverse
Part 1: The era of the Six Paths
Naruto may not be a historical fiction and most people will think that the utmost historical reference in the series is the fact that ninja were a thing in feudal Japan. But what if I told you that there is an insane amount of historical parallels in the series? That we could actually place the events of the main timeline within real periods of Japanese history? In this two-part series, I’ll be explaining the many parallels, references and design inspirations of the main events and generations that shaped the course of the series that we all know and love. I’ll start with the era of the Six Paths (starting from Kaguya and ending with Indra and Ashura), and part 2 will be about the Warring States (dynamic between the Senju and Uchiha). At the end of each part, I’ll add useful links so that you can deepen your investigation and see my sources. Without further ado, let’s start overanalyzing.
Historical references and parallels in character design and dynamics
I’d place this particular era of the Narutoverse in the Heian period of Japan (or at least the most important people, the brothers Indra and Ashura). Considering that we’re spanning 3 generations here, I’ll separate the individuals involved in the following way:
Kaguya: End of Nara period (710 AD - 784 AD)
Hagoromo and Hamura: Early Heian period (794 AD - 1185 AD)
Indra and Ashura: Heian period (794 AD - 1185 AD)
Kaguya
On a side note, I’d like to add that I’m not really considering Tenji in the list above because he’s an anime only character. However, his case caught my eye so I’ll discuss him as well. Let’s start by evaluating Kaguya and Tenji then. Kaguya’s character design is a very classical archetype of Heian beauty standards and clothing. Long, straight hair with flowy kimono and a delicate face. Her unusual eyebrows are no coincidence as well, as in the Heian period the practice of hikimayu was commonplace in noblewomen.
"Hiki means "pull" and mayu means "eyebrows". Aristocratic women used to pluck or shave their eyebrows and paint new ones using a powdered ink called haizumi, which was made of soot from sesame or rapeseed oils." (source)

Another interesting fact that I’d like to point out is that Kaguya is a character with striking similarity to a Japanese folk tale, in this case the Tale of Princess Kaguya (Kaguyahime no monogatari), whose origin we can trace back to Heian Japan. The Tale of Princess Kaguya tells the story of a little baby girl who “fell from the skies” and was found by a couple of old farmers inside of a bamboo. She grew up to be extremely beautiful and was courted by lots of noblemen, but she rejected them all insisting that somebody would come for her, as she looked at the moon. Of course, Naruto provides us with a different ending to the story but this similarity can’t be overlooked.
Tumblr media

Moving on to Tenji, it gets a bit more complicated to place him in an exact historical moment as he has elements of many different periods. His hairstyle resembles the styling of the Jomon period, whereas the entire setting in the filler episodes are more similar to the Nara period with the many small kingdoms fighting for dominance within a vast land, just like pre-unification Japan. Therefore, I place Kaguya and Tenji at the end of the Nara period, because we see how Kaguya takes over Tenji’s rulership and is regarded as a noblewoman after she casts the first Infinite Tsukuyomi. I have to rely on some filler in this case because otherwise I can’t find a logical explanation as to why Hagoromo was so well settled and had a large group of people following his teachings if it wasn’t for Kaguya ruling some land that originally belonged to Tenji.
Hagoromo and Hamura
Let’s start with the second generation. Following the events of the end of the Nara period I quoted in the previous section, Hagoromo and Hamura would go in the beginning of the Heian period. Their character designs feature long, flowy tunics without a visible belt. Here you have an image of men’s clothes through Japanese history, the third one being a feudal lord of the Heian period. Compare and contrast with these anime and manga images.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Filler anime episode with both // Right: Hagoromo manga panel
Again, since we get very few manga panels related to Hagoromo and his sons, I’ll refer once again to the filler episodes where he is shown as the ruler of a village. The spot within the Heian period in which I’m placing Hagoromo would be around 100 years after the Taika reforms which established one of the first codes of law in Japan and (Taihō code) and divided the country in provinces ruled by feudal lords. Curiously, around the time where the Taika reforms happened, there was an emperor called Tenji.
Indra and Ashura
The third generation of the alien-human hybrids is here, and I place them in the Heian period as well. My main reason to consider Indra and Ashura in the Heian period is the fact that this is the exact time period where the samurai originate. A common misconception is that a samurai is a Japanese warrior highly trained in the martial arts and weapons. While this statement holds some truth, the samurai were the military social class of feudal Japan, which means that there were people who were of the samurai class but had never touched a weapon in their lives. Therefore, samurai clans were not entirely composed by warriors but also had a number of people who lived a more “civilian” lifestyle. And you may be wondering, “what do the historical samurai have to do with the ninja that we see in Naruto?”. The answer is: more than you think. Historically speaking, the ninja is a samurai specialised in stealth and sneaking, the only difference with the Naruto universe is that the ninja we know and love from the show possess chakra and perform techniques with that.
The story of Indra and Ashura is strongly tied to the origin of ninja clans in Naruto, just as the Heian period is the origin of the samurai clans. From this time period I’d like to highlight the myth of Minamoto no Yorimitsu, more commonly known as Minamoto no Raiko. His story says that he slayed demons (yes, really) and saved many maidens from being abused by drunk oni with his great sword, Dojigiri Yasutsuna. The difference between myth and legend is that myths hold some kind of historical fact whereas legends are purely fictional. Minamoto no Raiko has been heavily mythified and his story sounds unbelievable or too much like a fantasy story until you realise that he did exist and that his sword is kept in a museum. Doesn’t this resemble how the origins of ninja in Naruto are almost like fantasy stories up until Hagoromo shows up in the 4th war and explains that everything was real all along?
Tumblr media
Above: Ukiyo-e of Minamoto no Raiko and others fighting the demon Shuten Doji.
Just as Minamoto no Raiko is considered the first samurai, Indra could be considered the first shinobi. He was the first to channel and shape chakra to create jutsu, and he was considered as part of the legends surrounding Hagoromo. Please compare these two panel sequences, one is from earlier in the story and the second one is Hagoromo’s version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The brothers’ character design can also be correlated with the Heian period. Indra’s eyebrows seem to be real but resemble the hikimayu design of Kaguya’s eyebrows, however he does add eye makeup. The people who wore makeup in the Heian period were nobles (mostly noblewomen), once again reinforcing my point that this family started out as feudal lords and eventually fused with the warrior class, becoming ninja clans. Although the character design for Indra and Ashura isn’t 100% equal to Heian Japan’s male clothing, the inspiration is subtle yet visible. I’d say that the inspiration is mostly for the plot rather than the appearance of the character. If you’d like to see more real Heian period clothing, this link has recreations of the outfits of the characters in the Tale of Genji, by Murasaki Shikibu.

Canon Characters Meet Ocs Event!
This event centers around canon characters from various fandoms (will be listed below) meeting your oc (from any fandom) or you can request that one of mine meet a canon character instead.
Rules:
: ̗̀➛ You can only use one of your (or my) ocs per request.
: ̗̀➛ Only 5 canon characters allowed per request (make sure to add which fandom they're from if you include characters from different fandoms).
: ̗̀➛ You have to use at least one emoji from my regular request requirements list (generally just follow what that says to do for requests).
: ̗̀➛ Add what timeline your chosen fandom is in. Is it in the beginning of when the fandom started or at some other point?
: ̗̀➛ Make sure to add that your request is for the event. For example:
"[Insert greeting here (optional)] Can I request [your request here] for the canon character meets ocs event?" Or something similar like that; just make sure that includes that it's for the event.
: ̗̀➛ Add what kind of interaction you want your/my oc to have with the characters you chose. Will they fight or are they just hanging out? If they're from separate worlds, are they sharing what their worlds are like and exploring? Also, you can include who you think your oc would get along with or who they wouldn't get along with, stuff like that.
: ̗̀➛ If you request with your oc, make sure to add a link so I can find your oc or add just the picture and their name + some personality traits and hobbies, stuff like that. You can add fears/traumas and other stuff if you want if you think it'll make your oc seem more like how they would act.
: ̗̀➛ One last thing, do you want me to write from the perspective of your/my oc or of one of the characters, please clarify that in your request.
If all of these requirements are not fulfilled, I will respond to your request saying that I cannot write it. You've been warned in advance. If you make the necessary adjustments to your request and resubmit it, there'll be no hard feelings and I'll do my best on it!
Here are the fandoms that I'll write for during this event:
Twisted Wonderland
Genshin Impact
Narutoverse
Riordanverse
The Case Study of Vanitas
Fire Force
Seraph of the End
Demon Slayer
Tokyo Ghoul
If you have any questions about this event, let me know in the comments of this post and I'll answer them as soon as possible. I look forward to your requests!

Heeeeey Rayne *trying to be casual* I always wanted to know how you would include Neji in The Last, because your take on him is the best out there 🥺 I know the BtB universe is canon divergence so have you ever even thought about adding/referencing the Otsutsuki threat to your story? Idk if you have answered this before 😭 really love u <3333
Heeeeey Rayne *trying to be casual*
Tumblr media
I see your sweet casual vibe and I raise you a creepster over-confident hello, my lovely.😉
Aw. Thanks for taking the time to drop your ASK!
I always wanted to know how you would include Neji in The Last, because your take on him is the best out there 🥺
Tumblr media
Aww hell...*immediately loses all sense of false cool* That's incredibly kind of you, Anon...🫠🥰 I'm so, so happy to know you enjoyed my take on Neji. 🫶🏼💜
The Last. Yes...ah...*squints, trying to remember the full storyline*...forgive me, Anon. I've been on a Shippuden series/movies rewatch to get back into the Narutoverse for BtB and I've yet to rewatch The Last. That said, I recall the major events, so I'm on the same book as you, my luv, just trying to get the pages straight in my demented head. 😅
Well...if following the BtB-verse...that entire movie might look oh so very different...I can't say too much without giving away spoilers for HHU...though I can certainly say that Neji would've been present when Hanabi was taken, so how that kidnapping played out would definitely have involved a showdown with Neji. He'd also have been deployed on the team to recover Hanabi. Again, because I'd be sticking to the BtB-verse there are several things that would've played out differently in the events of The Last. Sorry I can't give a fuller take on this, luv.
I know the BtB universe is canon divergence so have you ever even thought about adding/referencing the Otsutsuki threat to your story?
Great question. Hmn, yes and no. I wasn't a massive fan of how convoluted everything got with the introduction of the Otsutsuki, though I can appreciate certain elements of this narrative especially in relation to Hagoromo (Sage of Six Paths) and the explanation for the Rinnegan/Pein's Six Paths etc. Hagoromo's interference/involvement with Sasuke and Naruto, and the events just post-War is about as far as I'm willing to dive regarding the Otsutsuki, though mentioning their existence wouldn't be beyond the scope.
I wouldn't go too far along the timeline (she says, saying she'd never write Post-War, haha-joke's-on-me 😅)...I'd certainly never touch the Boruto-verse *hisses*, which is where I understand most of the Otsutsuki narrative plays out. That generation is hands-off for my brain, as many of the relationships don't play out due to the canon-divergence of the BtB-verse, also certain characters don't follow the Boruto-verse character arcs...and uh, yeah, certain babies don't get born. 😅😅😅
Idk if you have answered this before 😭 really love u <3333
Aw! No, sweetie, I hadn't answered this before, so thank you for your question surrounding this bigger branch to Kishimoto's canon world tree. I'm so chuffed you'd be interested in my insane take on this. 😘 You're a sweetheart. Big love and appreciation is coming at you for your warmth and kindness. 💜💜

Speculation from the cavern Part II
Tumblr media
Following my part I
I once wrote a realistic headcanon where I said Madara might have stay connected to the Gedo statute around his 40, his body prematurely exhausted by years of battle. But actually I realise now I was wrong. To connect yourself you need a Gedo statue and to summon a Gedo statue you need a pair of rinnegan...🙃 and he obtains them in the verge of death, in his 90 ish...
Oh man... that mistake open a new infernal door of speculations !🤯
Madara was free to move anywhere he wants for most of his life, especially after Tobirama's death who is known to be a great sensor. And thanks to white zetsu, he is pretty well aware of all the shinobi geopolitics of the time. He said to Obito that he built some of the underground.
Tumblr media
Ok so underground builder might have been one of his hobbies. Sasuke later destroyed the main entrance when he awakened his EMS but the corridors still exist and we don't know how far they travel through the fire country.
And his character is showed many times as a man of action. He can't just stay still. He's constantly looking for or doing something new as shown by Hashirama's reaction below:
Tumblr media
PKGORBM!!! everyone is traumatized by the apocalypse on its way but Hashirama seems to talk about a facetious kid acting bad. I'll talk an other time about both Hashi and Madara being insane in their own league.
So Madara just sitting in his cave and contemplating the coming of his potential Rinnegan seems out of character.
Do you remember when he made fun of Obito spending a life time chasing the 9 bijuu with the help of Akatsuki. But Madara... what is your excuse in 60 years?
Tumblr media
If I remember well, when he talked to Hashirama in front of the Uchiha shrine he already knew Kaguya's story (thanks to Zetsu's editing) and already came up with the idea that he needs part of Hashirama's power to recreate the Rinnegan. and also that he needs all bijuus for starting the infinite Tsukuyomi. He captured first Kyuubi and used him to get Hashirama's cells... but then what next? Why didn't he chase the other weaker bijuus just with his Sharingan?
Even if the Rinnegan was delayed, he still was strong enough to chase all the bijuus in his 30s, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's but he didn't. Even in his crippled 90's he was able to control a group of Kiri shinobis, Rin and sealed Sanbi into her.
Some of you could say : but what the point to collect all the bijuus if you can't summon the Gedo statue first? Ok, ok...back to the Rinnegan issue. If I'm correct to awake the Rinnegan not only you need to merge Uchiha and Senju cells but they need to both comes from Indra and Ashura reincarnations. So technically as soon as Hashirama died, his cells are useless. And Ashura won't reincarnate again if the previous Indra's reincarnation is still alive. Sasuke becomes Indra's next avatar only because Madara died just few years before. As if Ashura was waiting for Sasuke's birth to reincarnate few month later into Naruto and continue their never-ending conflict.
You want to know what I think about this mess? I think Kishimoto and his team don't care that much about ensuring consistency in Narutoverse, in the same manner they don't care about proper family tree or timeline. They just wanted an overpowered charismatic villain from a distant past, and didn't pay attention or didn't care that it's doesn't make any sense that someone so powerful and notoriously impatient will be invisible and idle for 60 years.

the thing about second war/third war era narutoverse is that the timeline and canon is not consistent enough and so there is no centralised canon and i have to adjust my worldview with every fic because they all have a different timeline in mind

you know what? fuck it. i have decided that if your muse exists outside of haku’s naruto-era timeline ( or the naruto world even! ) that it doesn’t matter because they can still meet when haku falls through the demonic mirror realm during ungaikyō. haku will simply wind up in your muse’s timeline and fuck everything up on accident. the same thing applies for anyone who wants haku to meet their muse at a different age, like a baby or some shit, or you have an au where your muse is, idek, a jinchuriki or a nascar driver or whatever. haku from standard timeline will meet your muse in your timeline. haku will internally be like “damn this is crazy as fuck but i’m going to act like i belong here until i can get out of here.”

Heyo, I'm currently obsessing over obey me, specifically mammon becuase, soft.
Now I'm just stuck thinking of Y/N being accidentally chucked into narutoverse and, not panicking at all, still absolutely putting their life in danger.
Oh, an S class missing nin? Lemme say hi.
And in, Obey me Y/N fashion they pull out the charm and talk, befriending anyone they come into contact with, mostly on accident.
They now not only have pacts with 7 of the strongest demons in the devildom (excluding barb and dia from this list) but also have made themselves irreplaceable to all of the hidden leaf, the akatsuki, and everyone in between.
By the time the demons are able to get Y/N back, there's like 30 people hanging onto them, refusing to let go.
Bonus points:
Y/N sees white hair in the distance and blurts out "Mammon!" And runs over, as they got closer they saw how spiky the hair was, and realized no... not mammon.
Everyone is super interested in their pact marks.
The hidden leaf nins get kinda worried when Y/N mentions they know demons and have pacts with them.
They get especially worried when they mention they love said demons and are very close.
Someone mentions the devil himself, Y/N immediately: "Oh, I'm friends with his son!"
Serious points for those who want: (SPOILERS FOR TASK 16)
Y/N has frequent nightmares while separated from their demons, not only about what they're going through, but also about dying.
Seriously the game did not go over this enough, no way Y/N just got over that.
They felt it, they watched themselves die and felt it. Nope, nightmare city.
After getting closer to everybody, I could see them telling them about that.
Kakashi ups the protectiveness a bit, after all he's already lost enough friends.
Team 7 also ups the protectiveness for the same reasons.
I feel like Hidan would say it's cool they got to be killed by demon, let's be honest here. But if they're close to eachother I feel he'd also claim that if any demon tries it again he'd be able to end them.
Orochimaru and Sasori would be interested in the time travel aspect of the whole ordeal, and would probably ask questions about the previous timeline.
Y/N begins to feel homesick for the devildom, but at the same time doesn't want to leave their new friends behind.
Best ending here in my opinion: Y/N in game has eluded to having nothing for them in the human realm anyway, so maybe for the time they aren't taking part in the exchange program they can find a way to let them stay there.
Mammon visits daily becuase I said so.
Charisma 100 reader
I mean how else did they befriend all the demons in the devildom and then literally everyone in Naruto

Hey Kat. Hopefully this masage reachs you in good health both in spirit and body. If this is to annoying or rude please ignore me or tell my to fuck off. But i saw on Ao3 that you did some spring cleaning and marked a lot of stories as discontinued from Narutoverse. Because i live for BAMF Kiba i wanted to know if this series is abandoned too? i didn't see anything specific ... Anyway that was all and i wish you the best for life and a lot of fun with your futur stories. Best regards Eiden (Ao3)
I honestly don't know, sorry. At this point I plan to go back to that 'verse specifically, but I cannot even vaguely begin to give you a timeline.

"Well keep in mind I do feel a bit sad about it, that'll come through. but Kishimoto has always come off to me as on-edge cheesed off. LOL. His animal and animanga references aside, If you think about the, say, Akatsuki just being folks he saw on the train - Itachi has the blank stare of someone going to see his grades on a giant board after x years of cram school - then you consider the elders? As some wrinkled sticks he *knows*? There's some salt mines there.
What I'd like to know from someone who's been the Japan in that space - which was a recession - is did things look that dilapidated? Every video I see of Japan: everything is swept, gaps are filled with flowers, it might be industrial but someone is squaring up details. When you look at the manga linework for Konoha? Shit's falling apart. I need to look at Ame, Rain, to compare, but Konoha has these signs of neglect? Which doesn't seem to fit what I know. Like "the village is great, but Here Is How I Really Feel About It." What artist is going to add linework to a crunch project? I mean that's why I hesitate to 1:1 it with Japan. It's always seemed to be about how the artist _feels_ about his locale, rather than reflecting it as part of the stage" - Anon
My knowledge of Japan is either "armchair-book-history" or from osmosis via the internet (History of Japan video included) so we'd really need a third party involved to judge the actual parallels between Kishi's OG Naruto and Japan at the time of his writing/drawing. Also bear in mind that I haven't read or watched Naruto properly, ever, (and I'm not looking to be inundated) so I'm working off snippets and vibes.
How and what references Kishi used to hodge-podge Narutoverse are interesting though; there was a post floating through the Uchiha side of Tumblr a short while ago about his use of Shinto religion and Kishi's adaptations of cultural/religious imagery to fit the Naruto narrative, which is even more interesting to think about coexisting alongside Shonen-Shinobi aesthetic and the possible influences of IRL nostalgia ☺️

Note
In the "Unchained" timeline for the Narutoverse, does Kita not exist and all coat-making is done by younger siblings (who would of course in this timeline not miss her as she doesn't exist), did she die as an infant/was stillborn, or is there a totally normal Kita who does coatmaking and just isn't a reincarnation?
Kita due to dues ex machina was born a girl in Compass-verse.
In Unchained, the reborn soul that was Kita was instead born as Izuna (female). So if you look back at Ikoma's family, you'll see he has a firstborn son in Unchained. Who is not a reincarnated soul.

I thought Narutoversity was fanon overall, not true canon. Not that I am criticizing your sources, not observation is all. To be fair Naruto timeline and history is still unknown, so it’s alright filling the blanks and such.
The Databooks are legit translations, the rest is a recopilation of the canon material plus, perhaps, some fan theories.

So, important talking here boys:
I wanna to say that days ago this blog reached 500 followers! I still find it hard to believe that there are so many people here, and I’m glad for all your comments, asks, messages, likes and reblogs. Knowing that I’m doing something with which you can have fun for free means a lot to me, because my primary reason to write is my love for words and stories ❤
I wanna do something special to celebrate this, but honestly I have no idea of what to do lol I Will Just continue to post the requests I've received and working on my stories as well.
Also today I received on my ao3 a comment in my fic The Leaves of Her Garden about the age gap between Madara and reader and if his behavior towards her could be seen as grooming. I’ll write here the same thing I replied to the reader there:
First, y/n is not a minor, despite being younger than Izuna. Yeah, I know it sounds cheesy and we don't have a complete timeline to specify ages and dates in the Narutoverse, but the thing is that I never write stories like this one with minors and don't like aging up characters to make them fit in this type of content.
Second, though this story doesn't include extreme/explicit/obscene content, it's classified as "mature" for a reason. Reader is in an unfavorable situation, accepting to marry someone she doesn't know in order to stay alive.
Madara doesn't mistreat her in any point of the narrative, but the relationship they build here is far from perfect or equal, and here we have his persona as an important factor: he's the second most powerful man in the world, with only one person being capable of stopping him; he's the head of his clan living in the middle of a cruel, warring era, which molds one's character for the good or the bad; he's an extremely clever man who catches people's attention with little effort and he's feared by many, with an intoxicating personality with hints of a manipulative behavior. Honestly I can't see a man like him acting differently than this with anyone, so y/n would not be an exception.
My advice for everyone who stumbles in my stories or any other content is: if you see something you don’t feel comfortable about, don’t feel pressured to keep consuming it. Just quit it. Respect your own limits and remember that your well being is more important than a text you find on internet. And know that you owe nothing to the people who create the “triggering” content, and that includes me. We are not here to feel bad or anxious, we are here to have fun with the characters we love. That’s the whole point of being in a fandom.
Love,
Debs 💜

Itachi doesn't know who Gai really is because he was way too little (or was he not born yet at all? Ages and timelines are always a headache in the Narutoverse) when Gai disappeared from Konoha, so he doesn't understand why Kakashi looks at Gai like he's the most precious person in the world
Kisame knows even less than him, and when Itachi looks at him for help the sharkman simply shrugs
At least Hatake doesn't look like he wants to fight them
Itachi would have just been little, meeting Kakashi in Anbu ling after (let’s say Gai is taken shortly after Obito’s ‘death’ but before Rin’s death) So Itachi has absolutly no idea who Gai really is.
The only thing he knows is Kakashi should be tryingto kill him, and his friends, but he’s not. He’s just standing there looking at Gai with hope. Like he has missed this man and just wants to hug him.
And when it’s made clear that Gai doesn’t remmember him, that hope morphes into hesrtbreak. Itachi’s certain he has never seen Kakashi look this broken.

Sakura’s Ships Dynamics
Next part of my Naruto statistics series!
The development of ships‘ popularity is something that has interested since forever. So, without further delay let’s start.
I thought that hiding the most interesting parts behind “Keep reading” and walls of text is contraproductive for the outreach of this post, so I’ll give you a sneak-peek. Here’s how SasuSaku developed over the years:
Tumblr media
Ok, more details below:
Methods
All Naruto fics and Sakura’s fics
Data was collected from FF.NET (filters set on: Ratings: All, Sorted by: Published date).
For the description of process of total Naruto fics numbers collection see this post. Briefly, the archive was browsed and the first pages featuring a new year as Publish Date of the fic at the top of the page were taking note of. Knowing the number of archive pages produced per year and the number of fics per page (25 fics on FF.NET) the number of fics published in every given year was calculated. Data obtained through this method have error of +/- 24 fics per year. For detailed description of limitations of this methods see here.
To find out the numbers of Sakura’s fics, I chose Haruno Sakura as Character A in Filter Menu, and performed an analogical analysis as for total Naruto fics.
Ships – Pairing Option
Romantic pairings are more complex issue. From October 2013 a ship can be indicated by “Pairing Option”. Pairing Option makes the characters’ names appear in square brackets, and users can search for the fics tagged with a specific ship through the Filter Menu.
I searched fics tagged with Pairing Option between Haruno Sakura and following characters:
Uchiha Sasuke
Uzumaki Naruto
Hatake Kakashi
Uchiha Itachi
Gaara
Yamanaka Ino
Uchiha Madara
The choice of characters was based on this analysis. I chose Top 5 ship partners of Haruno Sakura, accompanied by Yamanaka Ino (Sakura’s 7th most popular ship and her most prominent F/F ship) and Uchiha Madara (Sakura’s 9th most popular ship and my OTP 😊 ).
For every ship, I sorted the fics by Publish Date and counted the number of fics published per year.
Ships – Ship Names
Before the introduction of Pairing Option other solutions were invented and utilized by the fandom. In order to allow the readers to search and find shipping fics, authors were putting specific phrases into the summary, and readers would use Search Menu. Such phrases involved various variants of “Ship Names”: character names mergers (example: SasuSaku), usage of letter “x” between character names (example: Sasuke x Sakura, SasukexSakura) and combination of both (example: SasuxSaku). For details see this analysis.
In this analysis the following phrases were searched, and number of ships published per year was collected (on example of ship Uchiha Sasuke x Haruno Sakura):
SasuSaku
SakuSasu
SasukexSakura
SakuraxSasuke
SasuxSaku
SakuxSasu
Sasuke x Sakura
Sakura x Sasuke
For detailed description of the process of searching various ship names see this post.
Fic number retrieved from every Ship Name search were summed up year-by-year, giving a total number of fics per a given ship per year. Of course, this procedure opens up a possibility for fics featuring several Ship Names in their summaries to be counted multiple times. For detailed elaboration on limitations of the method please see here.
Results
First off, it is interesting if the number of Sakura’s fics reflects the general changes of Naruto fandom. Fics tagged with Haruno Sakura and total Naruto fics are presented in Figure 1. (Please note that Sakura’s fics are plotted on the secondary vertical axis! I will use secondary axis a lot in this analysis. For those unfamiliar with it, a short how-to-read-it: Total Naruto Fics reached their maximum in 2008 when ca. 47000 fics per year were created. Sakura’s Fics also reached maximum that year, but in her case ca. 11000 fics were published (you need to look at right-hand axis). Such presentation allows us to see that Sakura’s fics creation follows very exactly the output of the entire fandom. If I would plot Sakura’s Fics on one axis with Total Fics, her graph would look very flat, and this observation would have been lost.)
In 2013, one year before the end of manga, all Naruto fics show stabilization of published fics numbers, while fics featuring Sakura show a small, local maximum. The end of the franchise and canonization didn’t halt the general negative trend that was present in the fandom since 2009.
Tumblr media
Sakura’s fics represent ca. one fourth of total Naruto fics (102K fics vs 407K fics). If one breaks down the percentages year-by-year (Figure 2.), it can be seen that the 25% was pretty constant over the years, with the exception of years 2003-2005. When I was performing Ship Names searches, it turned out that during those years there were many more “shipping” fics with Sakura than the fics tagged with “Haruno Sakura” (example: in 2003 there were 34 Sakura’s fics, while in the same time 54 SasuSaku fics and 53 NaruSaku fics!). So, it is clear that during the very early years people weren’t tagging the characters too diligently. Therefore, data form the years 2003-2005 will need to be excluded from certain further parts of this analysis.
Tumblr media
And now, finally, after all the boring intro: THE SHIPPING!!!!!
SasuSaku
Let’s start with Uchiha Sasuke, Sakura’s most prominent ship (Figure 3.). As reference, Sakura’s fics are plotted on the secondary axis (this figure and the next ones). Fics numbers retrieved from Ship Names searches and Pairing Option search are shown separately and shouldn’t be added up. It is not clear how many of the fics are both tagged with Pairing Option and a Ship Name, especially those published in the years 2013-2019. I am planning to address this issue for Sakura’s main ships in a separate analysis.
Generally, SasuSaku ship development follows pretty well the number of Sakura’s fics, with a maximum in 2008, and a steep decline afterwards. It seems that the decline of SasuSaku fics is steeper than the general decline of Sakura’s fics (and of the Naruto fandom in general) though. There is a small local maximum in 2013 that reflects an overall increase of Sakura’s fics (2013 maximum may be longer and larger if Pairing Option fics are to be included – but this needs prior deconvolution) and afterwards we have a steady decline.
Tumblr media
NaruSaku
Uzumaki Naruto x Haruno Sakura ship shows similar trend as SasuSaku ship until 2012 (maximum in 2008 and then decline). The local maximum around 2013-2015 seems to be more pronounced though than the one of Sasuke’s ship and probably than in fandom in general (Figure 4.).
Tumblr media
KakaSaku
The ship with Kakashi behaves differently from the two previous ones (Figure 5.) and often goes against the general trends of the Naruto fandom. Namely, it shows maximum in 2007, a local maximum in 2011 (and no maximum in 2013), and, going against the decline of entire fandom (!!!) another local maximum in 2017. Pairing Option for KakaSaku was also rather on a constant level in years 2016-2018 when for other ships it was already showing a decline. One need to take under consideration though, that KakaSaku is by far not as numerous as the two previous ships, and relatively small number of fics can produce effects that are well visible on the graph (example: maximum of year 2017 is only 173 fics).
Tumblr media
ItaSaku
Ship with Itachi shows maximum in 2009, and a second, relatively strong maximum in 2013 (the strongest among the ships examined so far). The fics tagged with Pairing Option exhibit maximums in 2014 and in 2017, but otherwise the general shape of the curve reflects the trends in the fandom (Figure 6.).
Tumblr media
Gaara
Ship Gaara x Haruno Sakura had its maximum in 2008. The local maximum from 2013 is the weakest out of the ships examined so far, as if the temporary rise of activity in the fandom cause little increase of Gaara x Sakura fics production (Figure 7.).
Tumblr media
InoSaku
Ship Ino x Sakura follows general trends of the fandom, with an exception of a local maximum appearing in 2017 (Figure 8.). The Pairing Option shows stabilization in years 2015-2018, despite the general fandom decline. However, relatively small size of this ship (ca. 20-40 fics per year in the recent years) makes all relatively small variations appear as more significant than they might really be.
Tumblr media
MadaSaku
Ship Uchiha Madara x Haruno Sakura is a bit of a special case, as Uchiha Madara appeared in the franchise on-panel in 2008 only, and in person in 2011. This is reflected through the first MadaSaku fics showing up in 2008 only. There is a maximum in 2010 – interestingly, before the Tobi/Obito reveal, when Tobi persona was still assumed to be Madara. It would be interesting to see if the fics published this year take place in original Narutoverse or are of a time-travel sort. Years 2012- 2013 show a decline followed by a steep increase (against the general trends of the fandom) with maximum in 2016 (for Ship Names) and 2017 (for Pairing Option). In 2019 another increase can be noted, after a relatively weak 2018 (Figure 9.).
Tumblr media
So, now it’s time for some comparisons between the ships.
Ships with Sasuke, Naruto and Kakashi can be plotted together (Figure 10.). The ranking of ships remains unchanged over the entire timeline, however NaruSaku used to be ca. 4 times less popular than SasuSaku during the fandom heyday, and around the times of canonization it became only 3 times less popular (a relative increase in popularity). This is unfortunately also the time of introduction of Pairing Option, so this effect may be an artifact of parts of fandom using tagging systems in different ways. I will try to address this very question in the future.
Tumblr media
Dynamics of ships tagged with Pairing Option (Figure 11.) show as well the 3 : 1 ratio of SasuSaku : NaruSaku ships in years2014-2015. From that relative high, the decline of Naruto’s ship seem to be more dramatic than this of Sasuke’s ship in the recent two years (in 2019 the ratio was 4,3 : 1).
Tumblr media
But the numbers of fics created per year don’t tell the entire story, especially with the number of total fics changing so rapidly. Therefore, I examined what percentage of Sakura’s fics a ship amounted for over the years (Figure 12.) Years 2003-2005 are unsuitable for this kind of analysis, as the numbers of shipping fics exceed (and in 2003 vastly so) the number of Sakura’s fics.
The results from Ship Names searches are presented in Figure 12. For presentation purposes, SasuSaku ship is plotted on the primary vertical axis, while all the other ships – on the secondary.
SasuSaku ship used to make up to 30% of all Sakura’s fics during the fandom rise and heyday (2006-2008), only to drop to 15-17% in more recent years. The decline reached its local minimum in 2011 (for orientation: Sasuke’s and Sakura’s infamous reunion under the bridge in Iron Country was published in March 2010). During the Fourth Ninja War chapters SasuSaku stabilized on 16-17%. The canonization of ship in November 2014 didn’t seem to influence its popularity, and recent years brought a decline with all-time minimum of 14,3% in 2018.
However, it is possible that data from years 2013-2019 are influenced by existence of Pairing Option In the most optimistic scenario, the two tagging systems would be additive and we would have ca. twice as much SasuSaku fics. This question will be addressed in the future.
Tumblr media
Data from Pairing option show only a fraction of fandom history (Figure 13.), and after a steep rise (caused by spreading of Pairing Option awareness among the writers) SasuSaku remains on a steady level of 14-18% of all Sakura’s ships.
Tumblr media
NaruSaku ship was at 8% in 2007, and later it dropped to 4,3% in a manner similar to SasuSaku ship. During the Fourth Ninja War Arc popularity of NaruSaku rose once again to almost 7% and remained relatively high also post-manga end (up to 2015), only to drop to its minimum of 3,6% in 2019. The Pairing Option shows a similar drop in NaruSaku fics in last two years.
KakaSaku started off at 4% in 2006 and afterwards suffered a small decline, interestingly - with a minimum during Fourth Ninja War Arc in 2013 and not like those of Team 7 boys in 2011. From 2014 KakaSaku is on a relative rise as reflected by both Ship Names searches and Pairing Option.
ItaSaku had its maximum relative popularity in 2009, when 3,5% of Sakura’s fics were ItaSaku ones, and another peak in 2013. Last year brough a small, but visible rise of Itasaku fics.
GaaSaku started at 3% in 2006 and from then on it is on a steady decline according to Ship Names searches. Pairing Option shows a modest increase of published fics in two recent years.
InoSaku doesn’t show dramatic changes, though a low period can be noticed during the years 2010-2015.
MadaSaku remains on very low level throughout the entire timeline, but a rising trend can be noted in recent years (both tagging systems).
As always – all comments, tips, suggestions and questions are more than welcome! It was really a labour of love for me, and I would love to know what you think!
