Got a new lil guy for yall! This is based on some prompts shared by @ordheist on twitter, specifically, the brilliant: BRUTALIST GARGOYLE ! I knew immediately I hand to try my had at it! I might make another one, too. Maybe one that's more scary and less a cute wittle guyyyy, lmao. Finished this on August 15, 2023. EDIT: I have made the second one of the planned trio! EDIT 2: And here's the final one!

Brutalist Gargoyle - WIDE FROG

Here is the third and final of the set of Brutalist Gargoyles inspired by @ordheist's post on twitter a week or so back! I had a lot of fun making this one, I think she turned out really cute! She was inspired by a frog, and I think I captured that alright! I def think I'll be making a category of model commissions based on these gargoyles. Keep an eye out for when I open those! PLEASE BOOST: Hopefully this’ll be the last time I have to make a post like this. As I hear more murmurings of Twitter's demise, I’m having to reconsider illustration as a long term/full time thing. Like a lot of freelancers, Twitter is where I get the majority of my work, and I’ve been privileged enough to be able to do this full time for the better part of a year.

That being said, it’s always been a little wobbly, almost every month things have gotten really tight just before rent is due. This is untenable even at my current level of engagement, which I’ve noticed has dropped off pretty sharply as of late, so I’ve decided to go back to doing this part time.

As for where I am right now, I’m working nonstop getting the rest of my queue cleared out, as well as opening up other sources of revenue like the ptr3on and my shop. I’m also in a tricky position after being evicted, where I’m still looking for a new place to live which makes it hard to apply for jobs when I don’t know exactly where I’ll be yet.

So, I’m opening up TWO commission slots, with the caveat that there will not be a fast turnaround with respect to my current queue and the annoying situation I’m in right now. Also, please consider looking at my links in my linktree (SEE BELOW), where you can find a few ways to support me, either by buying merch, subscribing to my ptr3on, or just donating if you feel able to!

Hopefully this is for the best, I’ll be more financially stable and be able to clear out my queue while also dedicating more time to personal projects that I’m excited to show you all. Thank you for being so supportive and giving me the opportunity to do my dream job all year!

Picture above by Ludwig Deutsch. I had a bookmark of this painting for many years and I would often get distracted while reading and just stare at it.

I think I’ve talked about all that stuff before but if you want more details or specifics just ask!

For the last couple years, my really big influences have all been other artists I’ve met online. I mean I made a whole book with @ordheist and @bagb0ss. There’s a sort of loose cloud of (mostly) SFF artists that I’ve been really lucky to work and speak with and we all kinda know or know of each other or end up in the same Discord servers, or working on the same RPGs, etc. I’m not gonna link everybody but if you go through the interviews I’ve conducted for my newsletter or check out my side blog you’ll start to figure out who I mean (seriously a lot of these people are coming to tumblr now from twitter and I’ve been reblogging the hell out of them.) Seeing all the stuff my peers are putting out and talking with them is the source of like 90% of the ideas for my personal illustrations these days. It’s cool to be part of a community. I wish there were more opportunities to meet in person, but it’s still cool.

The other stuff that’s really been in my head lately is art that’s less illustrative, more abstract and graphical. Not pure abstraction mind you, but I’ve really been digging stuff that’s more about communicating a concept, feeling, piece of information, or idea than a narrative. More about design and composition than rendering. I recently read Philip Meggs’ History of Graphic Design and that’s turned me on to so new many artists and styles. In particular I’ve fallen in love with all the Vienna Secession guys, the Glasgow Style artists, and all the graphic and bookmaking ideas that came out of the Arts and Crafts movement. I don’t know how I want to work these ideas into my drawings yet and I haven’t had a lot of time to experiment lately but they're definitely bouncing around in my head.

There’s a whole lot of art that I really love but it rarely gets reflected in my drawings- American Regionalist paintings, gig posters, childrens’ storybooks, Eastern European Mosaics, Native American art, outsider art, colonial Americana …. One day I’ll find a way to synthesize it all.
