Donyale Luna   (US, 1945 - 1979)
_
Born Peggy Ann Freeman in Detroit, Luna moved to Manhattan to begin modeling in 1965 and within months, an article in Time magazine declared 1966 to be “The Luna Year” (also described her as “a new heavenly body…unquestionably the hottest model at the moment”).
Luna went on to be the first Black model to land the cover of 1966 British Vogue, a muse to legendary photographers like Richard Avedon and David Bailey, and the star of several Warhol and Fellini films. [Even though] a fan of LSD, she died of Heroin overdose at 34 in Rome.

donyale <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
donyale luna was a supermodel and actress during the 1960s. she's cited as being the first black supermodel and the first black model to appear on vogue. she was a muse to salvador dali and starred in numerous underground films of the 1960s.
born peggy ann freeman to middle class parents she spent her teenager years studying typing, journalim and the performing arts. she later went by the name "donyale george luna"- a persona she'd created, and in 1963 she was discovered by a modelling agent who recommended she move to new york to find work as a model or actress. in 1964 donyale was introduced to the editor of harper's bazaar. the same year she wored with paco rabanne and witnessed him being harrased & spit on by american journalists for casting all black models.
in 1965 she moved to london due to the racism she was facing in america, and a mental breakdown. her likeness was also sketched onto the cover of harper's bazaar, but was marketed as being 'racially ambigious.' the same year she was photographed with supermodel jean shrimpton, and half of the beatles- paul mccartney and ringo starr. in 1966 she was the first black woman to be on the cover of british vogue, worked with mary quant and gained the title "model of the year.' she was one of the top models, and in 1967 she was on numerous album covers as well as the film 'tonite lets all make love in london.'
in 1968 she was in the rolling stones' rock n roll circus, and was friends with brian jones. in 1969 she was on the cover of american vogue. in 1973 and 1974 donyale stayed in north america, doing runways in new york and toronto. in 1974 she was on warhol's magazine (called interview) and in 1975 she was in playboy.
her career began to decline which was due to her drug use (which was controversial) and also being described as unpredictable to work with. she had small acting roles on tv and in counterculture films. notably in 1967 when she was in tonite let's all make love in london, as well as the rolling stones rock n roll circus.
donyale's legacy is one of faking it until you make it- creating a persona of sorts and embodying that. she faced racial discrimination during her time as a model, but nevertheless she worked hard and helped pave the way for other black models in the industry. she rejected being type-cast to a certain look, or fitting the 'exotic' look photographers wanted her to have. unfortunately this has led to the modeling industry forgetting about her, despite how hard she worked and how much she accomplished. although she isn't talked about much donyale has shaped modern modelling, and her silent legacy is still carried on.

race diversity
Diversity in fashion means bringing in a diverse group of people who share clear distinctions such as age, skin color, race, orientation, and body type. People want to be heard, seen, and, most importantly, represented, which is what big fashion brands such as Chanel and Gucci are doing. For years modelling agencies and editors tended to look to one body type and skin colour. However over the years there have been a number of black model figures who have led the way in changing the industry such as Winnie Harlow, Jourdan Dunn and Amar Akway.
Dorothea Towels who was born in Texarkana and was the first top model to work in Paris after she was discovered by Christian Dior in 1949 becoming one of the most celebrated models in Europe. Christian Dior was the first to hire her. Working with other models from Finland, Sweden, England (and even Soviet Russia, extremely uncommon at the time) she helped Dior to internationalise the appeal of his fashions. Being one of the models chosen to help popularise Dior’s revolutionary “New Look”, she also learned the “Dior Swirl” and dazzled both him and his clients during the excessive runways.

Other models such as Sara Lou Harris, Donyale Luna and Mounia all made historical moments such as Sara Lou’s Harris becoming the first black model to appear in an advert campaign, Luna becoming first black model to appear on the cover of vogue and Mounia who became Ysls first ever black muse.

Iconic Naomi Campbell has been the face of fashion since the late 80s, she has always been an inspiration to many young women and has climbed her way to the top working with high brands such as Chanel , Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler and many more. Her most iconic moments include closing Gianni Versaces last haute couture show in 1997 as a Versace bride.

Supermodel Donyale Luna was one of the worlds most beautiful women in the 1960s. Born Peggy Lee Ann Freeman in Detroit, Luna began modelling in 1965 and within months an article in Time magazine declared 1966 to be “the Luna year” she was the first black model to appear on the cover of British vogue, was a muse to legendary photographers like Richard Avedon and David Bailey.

Donyale Luna (born Peggy Ann Foreman, August 31, 1945 – May 17, 1979) was a model and actress. Generally cited as “the first black supermodel ”, she was the first African American model to appear on the cover of the British edition of Vogue. Although the first African American cover model, she was not the first African American model as she was preceded by Models (then Mannequins) like Aïcha Goblet (Artists model), Adrienne Fidelin (the first African American model in Harpers Bazaar in September 1937), Sarah Harris, Bani Yelverton (first African American model to appear in an American fashion show) and Anthea August (the first African American model in British vogue in 1963) who entered into previously 'White' modeling spaces before the 1966 cover. She entered modeling in a period that favored "white-passing models" and has been described as "the first Black Covergirl to change things; to enable more diverse beauty paradigms to break through". She is known to have been a covergirl 11 times. She appeared in several films like the screen tests of Andy Warhol, and had roles in Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?, and most notably as Enotea in Fellini Satyricon, as well as Skidoo in the role of "'God's Mistress". She was born in Detroit to working-class parents Nathaniel Freeman and Peggy Freeman. She was one of three daughters, Lillian, Peggy-Ann, and Josephine. Her father worked in production at the Ford plant, of African-American heritage, and her mother as a secretary for the YWCA, of both African-American and European heritage,. As a child, she would go on trips to local cinemas with her father and in summer to swim at the "Kronk Gym" in Detroit. She attended the Detroit High School of Commerce, where she studied data processing and typing. She attended Cass Technical High School, where she studied journalism, performing arts and languages and was in the school choir, local community theatre and the experimental Concept East Theater. She married Italian photographer Luigi Cazzaniga in California in 1976, they had a daughter. The couple separated and, while still legally married, were estranged at the time of her death. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch7BATyOFrhrozqKAJ3KZroPbR6MhgMa_ZxFsY0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
