Something I realised quite recently is how much my views of Girl Meets World changed as I got older and how much more critical I am of it now.

I went from saying "everyone who says the Maya becomes Riley plotline doesn't make sense is stupid" to "Yep that plotline made no sense"

When I was Maya's age I thought her relationship with Josh was adorable and once I got to Josh's age I immediately went absolutely the fuck not

I think such a big appeal of GMW canon comes from a younger perspective, at least for me, and now I'm older I have a much more canon critical viewpoint of the show.

i think about pluto will always be a planet in my room at least once every three months when i rewatch gilmore girls season 7 episode 11 santa's secret stuff and they talk about how pluto isn't a planet anymore

I am watching Girl Meets World and when I watch this show, I honestly feel like I am watching it like Riley would watch it - with rainbows, smiles and just seeing the good.

Every time I see the fandom, there's always this one character they find annoying or just hate on. "Riley is the most annoying character", "Maya is the worst", "this character is frustrating", "this character makes me skip scenes".

I don't feel like that.

I love Riley. I love Maya. I relate to both of them. I am both of them honestly. They complete each other so much. They are the show.

But I think that's why I view this show different from others. Cause for others, it's about who the girls should end up. It's Lucaya, it's Riarkle, it's all that stuff.

When I see Lucas, Farkle, Zay, Smackle... I see them as the friend group. They all make me laugh as individual characters. But I couldn't care less about the romance part. I don't relate when people write essays why some of them should have been endgame. I literally have... no opinions.

The only romantic ship I care about is Rilaya. They are non-canon and two girls at that. They wouldn't be canon, Disney Channel would've never dared - but I do agree this show was too mature to be on DC, really... anyway. It doesn't matter that Rilaya never would have gotten a chance to be canon, because as I mentioned, the show is about them. They have scenes every episode. SO many scenes every episode. Being a Rilaya shipper is honestly the best. When I realize it, I could probably write an essay about them and how they are in love.

Anyway, what I have realized is that, when your focus is on a specific aspect, your view the show in a very specific way lol.

This show is so gosh darn campy and it's hilarious. It's also problematic in some ways and I do recognize that as well. I cannot take anything seriously and yet suddenly I take everything seriously at the same time. I am laughing and then I am crying.

Ahh the Gina 1.0 is starting to sound like Maya become Riley I sort of hate it lol I think there's nothing wrong with Gina being ambitious. Yes, I think the 1.0 is intentionally supposed to be like that maya being Riley thing. Gmw didn’t get a fourth season to explore this (😠) but that was EXACTLY what was supposed to happen. We were supposed to see that Maya was reflecting the best parts of Riley. Not that she WAS Riley, but that maya’s growth came from Riley and vice-Versa. That she was still maya, but a better version because of the people she was around. This is what we see with gina when she is talking about balance. She had 1.0 and 2.0, so now she is finding her middle ground. She knows she’s her best with some ambition and some leniency. What we see here is gina feels like she falls so far to either side that she is either “too much” or “not enough”. She’s probably felt this constant need to change and be different than who she is. This is where ricky helping her see that the way she is, the “constant” of just being gina, is good enough. It would be really sweet to have ricky say something about “it doesn’t matter what version you’ve been, every version of you is enough, because you’re gina. You’re just right.”

Okay I was asking in case you haven't watch it so I shipped Riarkle I saw some edits of them the other day and it made me sad because the show got cancelled before anything could happen between Farkle and Riley they never even had Riley discover her feelings for him I always found Josh and Maya a little creepy that as kind of like a Conrad but he wasn't toxic I just found the age gap to be too much if only they gave the show a chance like the original series.

Yeah I didn't ship Josh and Maya either and I always viewed him just as a crush she had.

Yeah, we didn't really get to see Riley realising she's in love with Farkle :(

I will always say that Lucaya is real, I love this couple, even though we saw little of them. Although I also enjoy the rucas.

back in the day, you were more a lucaya or a riarkle I'm curious now xD I was riarkle but now I see many things of Riley that facepalm emoji I guess she was her best with him I also find it funny how in the beginning rina was very lucaya for me but now I see it more as a riarkle the type of person you will count on forever but at the same time they have the extra spice that is that can't really be JUST friends so yeah in conclusion I'm curious and rina is perfect

Anon, I love this question! Thank you! It’s really giving me some nostalgia 🥲 I was absolutely a lucaya first and foremost. What can I say, I’m a such for the tough girl/soft boy trope. However, I definitely enjoyed riarkle too. I remember Riley getting on my nerves sometimes too, but a lot of that was because of her character regression (such as when she was with Lucas). Something I really appreciate about these shows I follow so closely, is that they are written with complexity and depth compared to a lot of other shows. Everything from the staging, the dialogue, the scene structure… it’s all very intentional. I think this is why you might be seeing parallels to rina and lucaya/riarkle.

My favorite ships have been the ones that we can observe closely and see the characters individual arcs reflects in the romantic arc of their partner as well. The ones where they literally need the other person to become a better version of themselves. And typically you can see them from a mile away. They’re the will they/won’t they, slow burns of the shows. You can just tell how much love and care are put into telling their stories and making them whole and complete. I’m not surprised my timeline went Lucaya->Muffy->Rina. They really pay off in their full circle moments. :)

Haven't watched boy meets world actually but in girl meets world, riarkle and lucaya were obviously THE ships. I think I later on became more obsessed with lucaya and imo Farkle & Smackle were cute too but like ofc no Farkle ship beats Riarkle, they were super cute <333.

I think both Lucaya and Riarkle dynamic was so superior. Riley and Farkle were really soulmates tbh.
