Preview: The Bat Woman (Limited Edition Bluray)
“Wrestlers, mad doctors, and human-fish hybrids abound in The Bat Woman (La mujer murciélago), a colourful showcase for the talents of Italian Mexican sex symbol Maura Monti. When Acapulco’s wrestlers start being murdered and their pineal glands mysteriously extracted, the wealthy luchadora Gloria (Monti) adopts her crime-fighting persona of the Bat Woman. Donning her disguise of shiny blue mask,…

From the recently released box sets. I’ll happily watch them so long as I don’t have to pay for them, (this one is on Tubi), but the dubbing is just awful. Beautiful picture, but the dub… Ugh!

Blu-ray Review: Grave Robbers
Tumblr media
If you find yourself craving more mindless '80s slasher fun after working your way through the new Friday the 13th box set, look no further than Grave Robbers, which Vinegar Syndrome recently released on Blu-ray. The setup of the 1989 Mexican horror film (known in its native Spanish as Ladrones de Tumbas) takes too long, but once the killer is resurrected at the top of the second act, it essentially becomes a Friday the 13th sequel.
Based on the first act, you're more likely to mistake Grave Robbers for Gothic horror, religious horror, or exploitation than correctly identify it as a slasher. It opens in the 1800s with a prologue in which a cult of devil worshipers attempt to impregnate a captive woman with the Antichrist. In the present day, a group of grave robbers get more than they bargained for when they stumble into the ancient crypt and unleash an evil curse.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, teenager Olivia (Edna Bolkan) - introduced early on and then almost entirely forgotten until more than half way through the 88-minute movie - and her friends are camping in the nearby countryside. She becomes the resurrected killer's target to give birth to the spawn of Satan. Her father, local police captain Lopez (Fernando Almada), gets involved, arming himself with an uzi as well as a knowledgeable priest (Roberto Cañedo).
Director Rubén Galindo Jr. (Don't Panic) and writer Carlos Valdemar's (The Bermuda Triangle) killer is essentially a hulking, undead monk, akin to the resurrected Jason Voorhees seen in Friday the 13th Parts VI and VII, and the plot itself shares commonalities with Part VI. The early scenes are reminiscent of Tombs of the Blind Dead, and there's a sequence that was clearly inspired by A Nightmare on Elm Street for good measure. The killer's signature weapon is an axe, which - despite looking like a Halloween prop - lends itself to some gory kills and yields a respectable body count.
Tumblr media
Grave Robbers has been restored in 4K from its 35mm original negative, presented with its original Spanish audio and newly translated English subtitles, for Vinegar Syndrome's Blu-ray release. It includes reversible artwork with its English and Spanish titles. The disc features an insightful 19-minute interview with Galindo Jr. (in English), who explains how making a film for the Mexican market differs from making one for America, and a less-informative but still fun commentary track by The Hysteria Continues podcast.
Grave Robbers is available now on Blu-ray via Vinegar Syndrome.

(1965-66, 1970-71, 1975-76, 1983-84, 1984-85, Torneo PRODE 85, 1987-88, 1988-89, Verano 2002, Clausura 2005, Clausura 2013, Apertura 2014 y Apertura 2018).
7 Copas: 1937-38, 1953-54, 1954-55, 1963-64, 1964-65, 1972-73 y Clausura 2019.
