17 Curious Facts About Cincinnati's Miami & Erie Canal
Of Course, Daniel Drake Thought Of It
Since he was behind almost every improvement ever contemplated in pioneer Cincinnati, it should surprise no one that Daniel Drake proposed a canal system in his 1815 book, “A Picture of Cincinnati.” Drake was, as usual, ten years ahead of his time, but his proposal closely matched the route ultimately selected when the canal was laid out in 1825.
Just The Facts
The Miami & Erie Canal extended 244 miles from Cincinnati to Toledo. Construction began in 1825 and was completed in 1845, at a total cost of $8,062,680.07. Along the route, the canal crossed 19 aqueducts and employed 106 locks. The last 10 of these locks carried barges from Court Street down to the Ohio River at Cincinnati along a channel now buried under Eggleston Avenue. The peak year for traffic was 1851, after which competition from railroads increased every year. The canal was abandoned in 1913 after a catastrophic flood in Dayton destroyed essential infrastructure.
Up & Down
Along its path, the canal climbed 395 feet upward from Lake Erie to reach its highest level. Known as the Loramie Summit, this plateau extended almost 20 miles between New Bremen to Lockington, north of Piqua, Ohio. From there, the canal descended 513 feet until it reached the Ohio River. The final 100-foot drop ran from Court Street to the Ohio River in Cincinnati.
From Barges To Superhighways
Long stretches of the Miami & Erie Canal are now traversed by automobiles, especially on I-75, U.S. Route 24, and Ohio Route 25. Automobiles were often the third vehicles to follow these routes. As the canal was abandoned, boats usually gave way at first to interurban rail lines in the 1920s and 1930s. Automobiles followed only after the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 funded the construction of interstate highways.
Cincinnati’s Rhine
Without the canal, there would be no Over-the-Rhine. The first references to Cincinnati’s “Little Deutschland” neighborhood as “Over-the-Rhine” appear around the time of the Civil War. Originally a put-down, the city’s German residents came to appreciate the idea that they felt more at home once they crossed over the Canal (the “Rhine”) into familiar territory.
The “Other” Canal
The Miami & Erie Canal was not the only canal serving Cincinnati. The Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal was completed in 1843 and connected Cincinnati to Indiana’s Whitewater Canal near Harrison, Ohio. This short canal was in operation for only 20 years and was converted to a railroad right-of-way after 1862. A tunnel constructed for the Cincinnati & Whitewater canal can still be seen in Cleves.
The Lakes Abide
Some of Ohio’s largest lakes were originally created to ensure a consistent flow of water for the canal. Grand Lake St. Marys was one of these feeders and was the world's largest reservoir when built. Indian Lake, originally a collection of small lakes and wetlands, was converted into a large supply basin for the canal. Along the length of the canal, smaller basins – including LeSourdsville Lake – allowed barges to turn around, dry dock, or exchange cargo.
Holy Water
A couple of local African American churches dunked converts in the Canal. One Northside church performed its rites at a location known then as Baptist Hill. The other congregation baptized a half-mile south of the Bruckmann Brewery, beneath the western slopes of Clifton.
Tumblr media
Liquid Gold
Canal transportation was appropriate if you didn’t need cargo in a hurry and if your cargo was unlikely to spoil. Whiskey, in other words, was nearly the perfect canal cargo, and a lot of liquor went up and down the canal. A single barge could carry 500 barrels of whiskey at 50 gallons each. At pre-Prohibition prices averaging $1 a quart retail, that’s a $100,000 boatload.
A Taste Of Venice
The City of Cincinnati celebrated its Centennial in 1888. As part of the festivities, an immense exhibition was staged at Music Hall. For this extravaganza, the 1,248-foot-long “Machinery Hall” was erected along the rear of Music Hall, over the flowing canal. The interior of the hall was decorated in a Venetian theme, accentuated by a fleet of gondolas poled along by singing gondoliers. The Italian boats returned every year into the early 1900s.
A Lock On A Name
Lockland, our suburban neighbor straddling the “Split” on I-75, has nothing to do with security devices requiring a key. A half-dozen Ohio towns contain “Lock” in their names, all reflecting their erstwhile position along the various canals connecting Lake Erie to the Ohio River. At Lockland, I-75 barrels right through the former canal locks.
Ice Is Nice
As an exposed and relatively shallow stream, the canal regularly froze each winter. In the sections near towns and cities, the annual freeze brought out skaters and even horse-drawn sleighs. The frozen canal also generated substantial supplies of commercial ice to icemen issued permits by the State of Ohio. One of the biggest storage facilities was located at LeSourdsville, north of Hamilton, capable of holding a two-year supply of that pre-refrigeration necessity.
Swimming Hole
Every boy in Cincinnati knew the “secret” sign: Two fingers held up in what later became the sign for “peace” meant it was time to go swimming. Every boy in Cincinnati also knew the warning shout, “Cheese it! The Cops!” – a signal to grab your clothes and scatter.
Beware The Naked Man
The canal had barely been excavated when Cincinnati City Council passed an ordinance in 1828 outlawing bathing in the waterway. The ordinance began: “Whereas much lewdness and obscenity daily occur from the public and lascivious manner in which men and boys expose themselves in bathing in the Miami canal in the city of Cincinnati . . . ” By the late 1800s, naked men were still in plain view along the local waterways. But nakedness was not the only crime. Even worse, these flagrantly unclothed males were naked on Sunday. Skinny-dippers created an offensive impediment to good folks crossing the Mill Creek bridge on their way to church:
Dangerous Waters
Charles Ludwig’s little book, “Playmates of the Towpath,” published in 1929 by the Cincinnati Times-Star, is filled with anecdotes about parents paddling their sons (and, rarely, daughters) for swimming in the canal. The book is equally packed with stories about swimmers being rescued or drowning. Although seemingly placid and tame, the canal claimed many lives over the years. Drownings were common, but infectious diseases from dysentery to cerebral meningitis spawned in the polluted waters as well.
And Gross, Too
Even those former boys who in their dotage fondly remembered swimming in the Miami & Erie Canal recalled the stench from industrial wastes including grease, acids, and chemical salts; rotting animal carcasses; the occasional corpse; and the contents of the innumerable chamber pots emptied into the stream from tenements along the banks. When a swimmer yelled “floater,” there was no telling what was on the way, but everyone scrambled out of the water.
The Last Boat
Cargo barges had disappeared from the canal by the early 1900s and long-distance passenger service vanished after the 1913 flood demolished some of the upstream locks. It is believed the final excursion boat on the Cincinnati section of the canal hosted a party of “Free Setters,” a society of men dedicated to beer drinking. Fittingly, the 27 July 1917 voyage started at the Gerke Brewery at the Plum Street bend and ended at Bruckmann’s near the Ludlow Viaduct.

14: Commend
Tumblr media
An acquaintance sits in a dismal gaol, and Ar'telan makes a courtesy call.
(Spoilers for SB, ShB sort of)
The sharp tang in the air of the Lochs accompanied Ar’telan on his walk across the great stone bridge to the capital. Beneath him, the vast expanse of the salt lakes stretched, now narrated by the hum and clang of machinery and hammers in the saltery at its edge. The rest of the land, though, still seemed like a skeleton resting where the beast had died, signal fires flickering to mark where it had fallen. The sparse forests of zelkova trees, stalked by manticores and ghosts, the bone-white fish which stalked the lakes, the uneasy fog that settled over the place, all of it added to the sense of decay.
The druvas had been cleared from the bridge in recent days, and so his only meeting was with the guards on the gate. In the many moons since Ala Mhigo’s liberation, the guard had been taught fast vigilance, both against the threat of primals and of Garlean incursion. He was so well-recognised that he was barely bothered on his way through, only a cursory check to ensure he was not an enemy of the state walking in under wicked glamour.
There were any number of attractions within the walls of the capital to captivate a traveler’s attention. A small Ironworks outpost still worked on the question of the Weapons the Garleans had made to throw against both their traitor and their unruly territories, ready to ferry a would-be warrior to the main camp. Citizens played Triple Triad by the aetheryte, eyeing him as he passed to see if he would be amenable to a challenge. The palace, now the seat of a more democratic form of government, offered the chance to reconnect with old friends. And the Royal Menagerie, with its fields of beautiful flowers, suggested a chance for reflection on things long gone and events to come.
Ar’telan ignored all of them, instead walking down the terracotta streets until he was within the mountains the city backed, the guards on the door offering an uneasy nod of acknowledgement as he passed them. Under the rock, the uncomfortable pulse of the sky was easier to ignore, and the thoughts he carried with him were easier to find.
The royal gaol, repurposed into a place to hold the many prisoners of war that had not been killed in the war for liberation. Some of them resented their captivity, some of them would have betrayed their birthplace to the Empire without a second thought. Some of them longed for redemption, cells lying empty as they laboured in civil service under strict watch. And some…
He was not the man he had been when he had first been down here. He took a moment, centred his aether. For all the hell that Hades had wrung from him, he had learned a little, though he was not sure if it would be enough. For all they called the Resonance an artificial Echo, it was a strange beast only alike in the broadest strokes. But perhaps it would do the job.
The cell was still sparse, despite the time that had passed between Fordola’s initial confinement and now. Her clothes were nicer, less rough hemp, but the collar around her neck - dormant without a mage to activate it, but still abhorrent in its purpose - served as an unkind reminder of her station.
“You,” she said, her voice level. He nodded to her, and there was a moment of absolute silence. Her thoughts were a concealed mystery, but her feelings felt loud behind her wall, amplified by two Echo-likes in proximity. She did not flinch.
“I had hoped they would be treating you better, by now,” Ar’telan remarked, and Fordola scoffed, though it was clear she was still confused by the situation that had found her opposite the man who had put her here to begin with.
“Kill a few primals, slay a few beastmen. It doesn’t matter to them,” she said, venom in her voice, but it was tired poison now. “Why are you here?” It was a question, not one he could come up with an answer for, not an easy one. Now that the danger had passed in the First, he did not think it would be long until something surfaced to demand their attention, but for the moment they stood in the lull.
“I wanted to be sure you were ok,” he said, offering a tiny smile. “It’s my fault you’re in here, after all.” Fordola scoffed.
“I put myself in here,” she disagreed. “You and I both know that. Maybe it would have been easier if I hadn’t taken their devil’s bargain, but under it all I’m still the Empire’s Butcher.” Ar’telan sighed, sitting down against the wall opposite her cell door. They had been here before, more than once, and she never warmed to him - not that he expected her to, nor would ever want her to, unless she wished it - but every time things changed.
“Has it eased?” he asked her, and she winced at the question.
“What does it matter to you?” she demanded, even though both of them knew that he had taken every effort to shield his soul from her resonant eyes, to stop her from reliving the horrors in his past just this once.
“They don’t care to ask about it, do they?” he surmised, and she made an irritable noise. “I have-”
“I don’t need your help,” she spat. “And I don’t want it. You think they don’t relish in me seeing the hurt I’ve caused them?” Ar’telan held out a hand, a tiny spark of aether gathering in it. The Light suffused it, shimmering in the darkness of the prison complex, still there despite his victory over it. As she moved forwards, he snuffed it out.
“Perhaps I do not want your sympathy either,” he said, and she recoiled, surprise in the coil of her limbs and a scowl on her face. “It does not have to be a competition, or an exchange of pity. It does need to gain either of us anything, for good or for ill. It has been many moons since the war ended, after all.” Fordola made an irritated noise.
“Then I will consider it,” she said, a compromise he had not expected to achieve with her. “Bah, you’re both as bad as each other. At least it’s easier to tune you out than the boy.” Ar’telan stifled a laugh at that. He knew a little of Fordola’s work with Arenvald and the summoners working with the Flames, dealing with summonings out in Thanalan. Echo was Echo, even by a different name.
I wonder what Hades would think to that?
“I will give you time to think on it,” he said, pushing himself to his feet as she retreated back to her pallet. “Duty calls me back here more often than most would like, I think, so I shall call in when I can.”
“Don’t rush on my account,” she muttered, bitterness still in her voice.
---
It had been Arenvald that told him the story.
The young Scion was ever excitable, and he had been brimming with pride as he had relayed the story of their fight with Ifrit, holding back the Tempered servants who had summoned it, helping to rid the land of the scourge of the summon for just a little longer. It was a different story to the one that Jajasamu had relayed - a bitter man angry with himself for misjudging the convict, and the threat they faced, feeling lesser in his need to stay back from the full brunt of the primal’s fury. Ar’telan wondered if it would have helped them to know of his first fight with a primal, in the same summoning circle at Zanr’ak, blood drawn from the stone of desperation.
He had asked how Ar’telan felt. Ar’telan had offered a reassuring platitude, acceptance of duty and necessity, and he wasn’t sure that he had been believed.
---
The first time he had gone to see her had been after the war was over. When the Qalyana summoned their goddess into a council hall and he had held the line with Arenvald and Fordola, and she had thrown her blade to the floor and walked away. Rejected the idea of death, and shunned the idea of redemption.
The guards had tried to dissuade him as he walked past them into the gaol. He had stood in front of her and neither had spoken a word, her mind overwhelmed with every bitter memory in his mind, every wound the fight had inflicted, everything he mourned. She had looked up at him, hand over her resonant eye as if it would stop the flood, and asked him how he coped.
“I don’t.”
---
The second time he had been met with less protest, at least from the guard. Again he had sat himself outside her cell, her mouth shut in stubborn silence, his hands in his lap lest she think he want to dominate the conversation. The Echo had shown him, when they had been enemies yet, what had happened to her father for the crime of making do in an impossible situation. She waited for him to use it against her, but he did not. In truth, he already had - keeping the secrets close to his heart as he told Lyse that he did not want her to be executed, to the idealistic woman’s surprise. When had it ever been black and white, under the boot of the Empire? He had seen what happened to the people who resisted. Visited the graves of the soldiers, heard the stories of the collateral damage weeping in a half-empty village.
Maybe it was selfish. In the days since, when he had pleaded for mercy for those driven to awful, cruel things, when he saw them crumble in the cell, when the people demanded blood and received it, one way or another, he had thought it might be. The blasted fields of Bozja haunted him still, the memories of a broken Queen and Misija’s choices - one way or another, they were always chosen, even if the perpetrators convinced themselves there was no such choice at all. But still he had begged mercy, that if she had to face the headsman’s axe then it would be after fair judgement. He had stood and watched people break upon the battlefield, and known, innately, that there was no judgement that could be fair.
“You got nothing better to do, warrior of light?” Fordola had spat eventually. “I don’t need the theatre of your head to make my day worse. Got plenty of that already.” Ar’telan had shrugged.
“I thought you might like the company,” he replied, and she scoffed at him. Was the wound too fresh, he had wondered? Of when they had faced off on the field of battle, her resonance overwhelmed by Urianger’s siphon, her choices rendered meaningless in the dust?
“You know how many I’ve killed. Surely there’s better company to keep than me.”
“You know how many I have killed, too.”
She was quiet then, for a long moment, before shaking her head.
“Thought it didn’t count, for you. Killing the Empire. They’re the enemy, aren’t they?”
“As we were yours. The choice is the same. That I am on the side of the victor doesn’t make mine right, and yours wrong.”
“Was that why he wanted to fight you, then? Zenos, I mean.”
The question had caught him off-guard, but eventually he had managed to offer a shrug.
“I don’t know. I don’t think so. I presented an opportunity to him - a potential for challenge. If I could reach him and face him, then he would need to work to overcome the obstacle. It made him try - think, persevere, strive. It made him feel. I understand it in theory.” Fordola had sighed, shaking her head slightly, though not in disagreement.
“It’s all mad. All of it mad,” she had decided, and Ar’telan had not been able to disagree.
---
The fog had lifted when Ar’telan walked out into the streets of Ala Mhigo, the sun twinkling with the last few moments of the light before it set. It wasn’t perfect - what ever was? - but it was something, and he would let that be enough. If one day she would be able to accept what had happened to give her the gift, if she would go from stony to acerbic, if she would leave the cell and be allowed her freedom, then his plea to Lyse all those moons ago would have meant something.
He did not carry Arenvald’s hope, that she would heal, forgive herself, move on. He had been in the chamber where Krile had been held, where they had stamped the gift into the giftless through brute force. He had felt the aether, the dozens of souls whose lives blazed in her Resonant light. She would never forgive herself for making that choice, and to ask it of her was too much. All you could do was see the death that lined your path forward, and make do.
She would not think it the same, he thought. That the people he had killed - conscripts and volunteers and natives, all equal at the end of the day, on the other side of the Warrior of Light - were the same as the ones that she had damned when she had accepted the experiment. They did not see the world the same way at all, not any more. She was bitter and hard like stone, retreating inward at the cruelty. His mask was passive, the smiles genuine, the burden accepted if only to make sure that no-one else ever had to walk the path that he had. But she yet had room to heal. There was space for her and the souls that walked with her, for better or worse, guided by the hand of the Resistance until they trusted her to guide herself.
And when the day came, Ar’telan would welcome her with a smile.

Mel’s Big Fantasy Place-Name Reference
So I’ve been doing lots of D&D world-building lately and I’ve kind of been putting together lists of words to help inspire new fantasy place names. I figured I’d share. These are helpful for naming towns, regions, landforms, roads, shops, and they’re also probably useful for coming up with surnames. This is LONG. There’s plenty more under the cut including a huge list of “fantasy sounding” word-parts. Enjoy!

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.
My brain was fried by the end of this so feel free to add more!
I hope you find this reference helpful and good luck world-building!

The completely unnecessary news analysis
by Christopher Smart
July 21, 2020
THE PLAN: NO PLAN
Wonder what the Trump administration's plan is for battling the Covid-19 pandemic? The plan is to have no plan, explained NYU journalism prof. Jay Rosen. He spelled it out: Let daily deaths of two to three thousand become a regular thing and then create confusion about who is responsible. Tell the governors they are in charge even though they can't do the necessary things that only the federal government can do. Blame the virus on the Chinese and overwhelm the system with disinformation, distraction and denial in what Steve Bannon calls, “flooding the zone with shit,” aimed at preventing the public from understanding the consequences of inaction. As Dave Eggers explained satirically in The New York Times: “Plans are for commies and the Danish. Here we do it fast and loose and dumb and wrong, and occasionally we have a man who manufactures pillows come the White House to show the president encouraging texts.” And while everyone is preoccupied with Covid-19, Trump will continue his agenda of clamping down on immigration, enriching big business and himself, breaking down public institutions, consolidating power and whipping his base into a frenzy. Now that's a plan.
BYU: BIGOTS & BUILDINGS
The Black Student Union at BYU (we are not making this up) has called on the administration of the LDS flagship university to take the names of any racist church leaders from campus buildings. But the higher-ups are balking because if they did that many of the structures wouldn't have names. For example, the chemistry building is named for the late LDS President Ezra Taft Benson, who, according to Salt Lake Tribune ace Courtney Tanner, said civil rights for Blacks was a “communist deception.” The campus fieldhouse is named to honor another LDS president, George A. Smith, who once said: “Negroes are not entitled to the full blessing of the gospel.” The embarrassing list goes on. But here at Smart Bomb, we convened religious experts from Murray pool halls who found the perfect solution — name the buildings for people in The Book of Mormon. The fieldhouse could be named Nephi, the founder of the Nephite people. And the chemistry building could be named Lephi, who was Nephi's father. Other buildings could be named for Nephi's sons, Laman, Lemuel and Jacob. It would be perfect and would also enable BYU's football players to learn about Mormonism when they ask questions like: What is a Lemuel?
A TALE OF TWO COUNTRIES
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. No wait, check that. It was the worst of times and no one knew how things got so screwed up. There was a Red America and there was a Blue America and they had little in common although both sides liked chips and salsa. Red America loved guns. Blue America hated guns. Red America hated abortion. Blue American loved a woman's right to choose. Red America loved big, loud Harleys. Blue America liked cute, little scooters. Red America loved diesel pickups with rifle racks. Blue America liked hybrids with climate control. Red America loved Bud and Coors. Blue America would drink only craft beer in chilled schooners. Blue America wore masks in public to be responsible. Red America spewed virus droplets and yelled something about the Constitution. Blue America carried hand sanitizer and did social distancing. Red America went to bars to pick up chicks or dudes. Red America loved Trump and the confederate flag. Blue America wondered what in the hell was going on inside Red America's head. It was the worst-est of times.
Post script — Well history buffs, you should be taking notes because it's not often that shock troops, like the S.S., swarm an American city. In Portland, Ore., protestors, along with Mayor Ted Wheeler and Gov. Kate Brown, were wondering who in the hell are the anonymous security forces in combat dress without insignias jumping out of unmarked vehicles to mug protestors and whisk them away to who-knows-where. But here at Smart Bomb we knew it was the Fuhrer who had unleashed his secret police on those anarchists and commie thugs. The Fuhrer had warned that if Portland didn't stop the vile revolutionaries from demonstrating, he would. (And remember, this has absolutely nothing to do with politics.) Suprise — the blitzkrieg isn't working — it's actually escalating the unrest. People once on the sidelines have joined protestors to push back on the gestapo invasion. Perhaps if Donald Trump showed up with a Bible things would get better. And speaking of freedom fighters, our brethren and sisteren in Utah County made national headlines for rebuking the hoax of coronavirus and freedom-stealing masks that liberals and medical types are foisting on them in a brazen attempt to steal the country from the righteous. Some people, like The Salt Lake Tribune's clairvoyant Robert Gehrke, say it made Utah the laughing stock of the nation. But according to our sources here at Smart Bomb, the Travel Council will use footage of the screaming lunatics to market Utah in other like-minded red states whose citizens yearn for freedom from tyranny with the slogan, “Life Elevated & Unmasked” and “Rock Your Face.”
In honor of John Lewis, we've given Wilson and the band the day off and offer “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley, one of the civil rights icon's favorite poems:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
  For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

We have a new citizen in Mount Phoenix:
Poseidon, the God of the Sea,                                           whose origins stem from Ancient Greece.                                                 He is now a City Council member                                                    and the fire chief at the MPFD.
FC NAME/GROUP: Gong Yoo GOD NAME: Poseidon PANTHEON: Greek OCCUPATION: Fire Chief at MPFD and a Council Member HEIGHT: 6'0” / 180 cm DEFINING FEATURES: A full back tattoo depicting the bustling animal life in the deep ocean, all in black and white - as well as a traditional tribal tattoo on his thigh that was done by a traditional tattoo artist in Hawaii. During intense emotions his eyes will change into a teal, ocean blue.
PERSONALITY: It is no secret that Poseidon can be a bit of a hothead. All too often acting on emotional impulse rather than strategy. More often than not he opposes those in power or those that believe they can tell him what he can and can’t do as he is very independent. The god is not known to back down from a challenge or act in any way inferior to others. He is quite confident with himself and takes care of how he looks, preferring to be admired rather than feared. As such, he has learned to be quite charming and charismatic as well as persuasive. As he as lived with mortals for quite some time now he has also come to appreciate humanity and good that they hold. However he is still aggressive and viscous to mortals that show themselves to be the worst of humanity.
HISTORY:
Chapter 1; “It was then that I returned to the sea”
The mountain was comfortable, peaceful and full of life. Yet, under the rule of his brother and the distance from the sea, Poseidon remained out of place. Many wondered why he had yet to return to the sea after so many years away… The war was long forgotten and siblings did as siblings do and moved on as if no betrayals ever took place. His desire for earthly possessions and his soft spot for another warming his bed distracting him from his duties as not only a husband but as a deity of the sea as well. For some time, Poseidon neglected his duties as the King of Atlantis and as the god of the seas. His brother - who was seldom different from him - threatened him should he not return to the deep waters and tend to his people. The god was a stubborn one, never really one for being told what to do, especially when Zeus was concerned.
Poseidon recognized what it seemed to his eyes that his family chose to ignore. Mortals were forgetting about them, fewer and fewer worshipping them as well as less believing in them at all. Becoming only a little more than myths on the tongues of mortals. The god had found it difficult to live amongst the humans as his siblings began integrating with them. Creating new lives for themselves with the mortals they once ruled over. However, Poseidon had no desire to live among the mortals like the others did. As Olympus slowly dwindled in population, the ruler of Atlantis stood and looked out over the mortals below… Loneliness and the call of the ocean pulling him from the safety net he’d made for himself back to the salty depths and the golden castle that felt more like a tomb than a home.
Chapter 2; “I shall guide them to shore, even if I no longer gain the recognition that I once did”
A faithful wife, a vast wonderland at his disposal, creatures far and wide that answered his every beck and call… what more could a man - a god - ask for? He often forgets the love he holds for his domain when he is gone and enjoying the spoils of dry land. Even when he is no longer the name on many sailors lips, he still protects them and guides them to the safety of the shore. That is until, he is challenged and that spark inside of him that fuels his pride and rash decisions is set aflame. “An unsinkable ship” or “The worst storm in recorded human history” are all calls to the impulsive decisions of the God of the Sea.
The human world was always changing, growing and advancing. Poseidon ventured along land whenever he could, charming all he came into contact with and enticing many far and wide. Feeding starving fishermen and smiling kindly to the children he leaves behind. They may never know how much he actually cares for each and every one of them, even if they were more often than not accidents. Most of his time on land and was spent pursuing and exhausting amount of men and women then returning to his wife. Who would eventually leave him to better herself among the mortals who taught her that they way her husband treated her was not love and he did not deserve her faithfulness.
The god could not resent her for her choice to leave him. In fact, it was a turning point for the god as it forced him to recognize the way he was treating those closest to him. He began to look in on himself and contemplate his flaws for the first time in centuries. Realizing the wrongs he’d done and learning from his mistakes was a tough process for him but… he did it and arose stronger than he’d been before.
Chapter 3; “I could rain down hell upon those who spoil my domain”
Poseidon never imagined this day would come. A day where he walked along the shores of his home, with his toes in the blessed sand and the sea foam that meets his ankles, yet he picks up trash at his feet. A rumble in his chest that echoes as thunder along the horizon, a glare in his eyes as he watches drunken teens leave bottles and wrappers along the sand. His gaze spitting daggers as he sits in town hall meetings around the globe as the people beg their government to stop dumping their waste in his precious seas. His heart singing as young people create new ways to save the creatures that live along the top layer of his oceans, those that suffer the most from their indiscretions.
He enters large skyscrapers owned by those who control the slug that finds its way into his lakes and rivers. Stands in conference rooms with people who believe him to be nothing more than a crazy environmentalist, not as a god that could end their greasy lives where they sit in their crisp suits. He would fight for the strength to keep the power within him contained, the one time he chooses to ignore his impulsive nature and stick to a plan. The only plan he has that doesn’t involved murdering every executive mortal that deems the lining of his pockets to be more important that his precious oceans. He fights on their level, with money and persuasion, though that doesn’t always seem to be what fuels them.
The god stands in a crowd of young people, with signs above their heads, fight in their spirit, compassion in their hearts and hope in their veins as they beg and plead with the older generation to save the oceans. He stands on court steps, in court rooms, on beaches surrounded by volunteers, sits in the audience of speakers and protests cruel aquariums and corporations that think of the salt water on the coast as their own personal dumping ground. He swims the banks of the shores, collecting trash that sinks, sits on the rocks outside his beach home and unwraps plastic tied around the necks of turtles. Soothes the whales that cry for their dying children and feeds the sharks that are being threatened for simply existing.
With a trident in his hand, his toes in the sand and an anguished smile on his lips, a slow tear rolls down his cheek as he stares at the oil that just washed ashore. He stares at the piles of fish that drowned in human greed and showed the god the worst side of humanity that he wished would never come.
Chapter 4; “I do not run and I do not hide, I am merely preserving my cause”
He changed his face often yet, kept the same conviction in his voice, kept the markings on his skin and the emotion fueled teal-blue eyes that hold waves in their depths. Young people are not stupid, they are the root of his cause, the reason he has hope for humanity. It did not come as a surprise to him that a few would catch onto his lies and falsehoods. As many in the groups he kept with for the cause shifted their attention to finding out who the mysterious person with different faces kept appearing, he left. Knowing that in order to get them back on track he needed to no longer distract them with the mysteries of the gods and powers beyond their comprehension.
There was a place he could go that he’d ventured to before. A place that was home to members of his family as well as other pantheons. Children of Gods and Gods alike roaming streets safely, living their lives and protecting one another. An island and a city which he knew well as well as the potential of his own children being there now both excited him and worried him.  As he fought for his cause and worked with the best of humanity to save his domain he met many men and women who enchanted him. Unashamed in fathering children with the women and pursuing anyone charmed enough with him to spare a second glance. He could only imagine they may find themselves here eventually, if ever. Poseidon could admit he had work to do still in the fathering department but, if he found one here or if one found him… he would try his best.
After all, he needed to befriend more young people to fight for the future of his domain.
POWERS: Among the usual abilities of the gods - Poseidon can control the movement of water using only his mind as well as summon massive storms in the oceans. With the use of his trident he can produce earthquakes and tidal waves. He has the ability to speak to and control sea creatures, with the use of moisture in the air he has the ability to fly. A lesser known gift of his is that he can create life with the use of water but, at great cost to himself. STRENGTHS: Confident, Charismatic, Independent WEAKNESSES: Impulsive, Impatient, Prideful

[ Map of the V’tosh Ka’tur City of Tikopah c.a 2245 ] | Based on the ideas of @perankotekru
Tikopah was founded in the late 4th Century by a group of Vulcans who rejected the teachings of Surak.  Isolated from most of Vulcan, it had to be self sufficient in order for its population to survive. The v’tosh ka’tur built four villages, with the largest one - Satir’sa - in the centre of an inverted triangle. Its walls were heavily fortified as the early residents lived in fear of war against their Surakian brothers. El’es, Punar-tor and Vaksurik were much smaller, built mainly to accommodate those who lived there. With little arable land, they had to adapt. Alem-suk’muzh, or ‘salt late’, was far too saline to support life, and so a treatment plant was built from technology purchased the large cities and spaceports. With no currency of their own, the Tikopan v’tosh ka’tur mined the rich dilithium deposits at the base of Mount Vai to trade with Vulcans and other alien species. Their hospital contained a mismatch of technologies both modern and ancient, acquired across generations whenever it was necessary.
Clean water allowed the hydroponic farm to be established in the mid 6th Century, after over 150 years of strict rationing and trade for all basic supplies. Most of the soil was too rich in minerals and salt to grow fresh produce, but a few tough crops were sewn on the north side of the lake, and thankfully took well to the harsh ground.
Each of the villages had their own small school. With a population of over 3000 by the 1870s, a higher education provider - the Satir’sa Institute of Science and Literature was formed (later shorted to the Satir’sa Institute of Science as a separate arts college was founded inside the city walls).
Starting in the early 5th Century, large group of Tikopahns made an annual pilgrimage to the ruins of an ancient pagan temple on Mount Vai to commemorate Kal Rekk, a day of silent contemplation and meditation. The journey took 3 days by foot and was spent in fasting.
As centuries passed, the city slowly grew from a small population of around 200 individuals from many different families to almost 5,000 inhabitants by the 23rd Century. Tikopah began to feel the strain and tensions began to grow between the villages. A small conflict over resources led to the massacre of the people of Vaksurik in 2235, children the only survivors. Much of the village burned to the ground, the rest was left to ruin.
In 2248, the peaceful city would be attacked once more, this time by a group of Romulan deserters after the city refused to trade large quantities of dilithium to the hostile aliens. The entire city was razed to the ground, with very few survivors.*
Sarvek was raised in the village of El’es, the second son of Azeraik, a professor at the Satir’sa Institute of Science and T’Sey, a representative for El’es on the Tikopahn Council. Azevek, his older brother, had heard his mother arguing with the leader of the Romulan party at the city hall. Nero killed her and other council representatives before returning to his ship. Knowing time was limited, Azevek rushed home to warn his wife and younger brother. They retreated into the cave system, Sarvek staying close to the edge to watch the ensuing chaos. It was not long before the city went up in smoke.
Unfortunately, a stray explosion ignited a deposit of dilithium, resulting in a cave in. Sarvek was injured but managed to pull himself out of the rubble, spending hours trying to dig Azevek and T’San out before the sun set and the chill of the desert numbed his bleeding hands.
He spent the next three weeks deliriously wandering through the desert in the direction of the Shi’al province before he was finally rescued.

The completely unnecessary news analysis

“RISK IT ALL” — DONALD'S NEW BOARD GAME
& FLY TO MEXICO FOR CHEAP DRUGS
Hey game lovers, do we have good news for you. Pompeo Brothers Inc. has just unveiled it's latest skill game of foreign relations. Now you can while away those sleepless nights, just like the president of the United States, by cooking up fun ways to mess up the balance of power. You can threaten to blow North Korea to kingdom come and then sit on your hands as Kim Jung Un threatens the United States with thermonuclear weapons. From the comfort of your kingsize bed and silk jammies, you can mess with our allies by taking a dump on the Paris Climate Accords and then having a good laugh with your buddies in the fossil fuel industries. You can also screw with those stupid Europeans by kissing up to Russia. They're already frightened stiff of Putin and you can twist their arms into beefing up their NATO payments by blowing into Vladimir's ear. But the real fun is in the Middle East, where you will drive everyone nuts by sidling up to Turkey's demands to rub out Kurds, while allowing Russia to kiss up to Syria. Then, by playing your cards right, you can actually do the impossible: Bring Iraq and Iran together by assassinating the mullah's top general. Pundits will say you're unfit and could blow up the whole region while putting American lives at risk. Is this fun, or what?
LIFE ELEVATED — OR SOMETHING
“Come on vacation. Leave on probation.” That's catchy, isn't it. The Utah Travel Council doesn't like it as much as “Life Elevated” — the slogan that Wilson and the Smart Bomb Band say promotes marijuana. Well, that's up for debate, but as far as drinking goes, the National Restaurant Association came up with “Come on vacation. Leave on probation,” when Utah legislators lowered the blood-alcohol limit for drunken driving from .08 to .05. That means the average woman would be legally shit-faced after one generous glass of wine. Folks in the hospitality industry — restaurants, bars and hotels, etc., worried the new booze law would further blight Utah's reputation as a teetotaling theocracy. Not surprisingly, the white, male, Mormon lawmakers didn't seem to care. Alcohol is the root of all evil and legislators want to keep their Temple Recommends in good standing. But wait, hold the presses, a recent report on alcohol-related traffic stops in the Beehive State shows that no more arrests were made under the new law. Could it be that alcohol-related accidents are usually caused by drivers whose blood-alcohol level is well above the .08 limit, revealing the new law to be meaningless? Hold on to that thought and pass the Jack Daniels.
DOWN AND OUT IN THE CITY OF SALT
If you are homeless and get arrested and put in jail, are you still homeless? Not according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that tracks this stuff. Some home. Last weekend, 17 people were arrested during a protest at Salt Lake City Hall regarding the lack of shelter space and the treatment of homeless campers. The action was organized by folks who have homes but don't like the way police regularly break up homeless camps — most visibly near the downtown library, which happens to be spitting distance (pardon the colloquialism) from Police HQ. Recently, the 9th U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that camping is not illegal if there are no other options. But in Salt Lake County, the health department can deem an area as a public health hazard — the green light for cops to take action. Among the problems campers face is a lack of toilet facilities and garbage disposal. Why don't the city and country create a campground for homeless campers that would provide those amenities? Who knows. But the problem isn't going away. You can't afford housing at $7.35 an hour and barely at $15. Since the era of Ronald Reagan, this country— the richest in the world — has been on a trajectory that has led to more than 500,000 homeless people. And don't worry, those protesters didn't stay long in jail — there's no room there, either.
FLY TO MEXICO FOR CHEAP DRUGS
If you need expensive prescription medication but can't afford it, perk up your ears. PEHP, the insurance provider that covers 160,000 Utah public employees, will fly you to Tijuana where you can get your (legal) drugs for a fraction — 40 to 60 percent less — of what you pay here. (We could never make this up in a million years.) As reported by Salt Lake Tribune ace and Pulitzer Prize winner Erin Alberty, PEHP is saving money hand-over-fist with this south-of-the-border maneuver. That's right, they will fly their clients to San Diego, drive them to the district in Tijuana known for it's healthcare, bring them back stateside and fly them home  by suppertime — and PEHP still saves bundles of cash. Good old American know how. WTF. If you don't belong to PEHP, don't worry, Congress is working on this and will have a solution by the time hell freezes over. Right. This country isn't corrupt, it's just that big corporations have bought off our lawmakers. Nonetheless, if you can't get a state job, you can always drive to Mexico yourself, where Americans regularly get dental care, all kinds of medical procedures and medications. It's done so often that it has a name: “Medical Tourism.” And fortunately for us, Mexico isn't building a wall.
Post Script — And that' it for another sterling week here at Smart Bomb, where the staff keeps track of President Trump's golf days so you don't have to. It's been a harrowing few days, what with the impending war with Iran, new evidence that Trump is up to his chin in the Ukrainegate (not that Republicans give a you-know-what), and the New England Patriots getting knocked out of the playoffs. (Don't you just love it when Tom Brady gets bummed out.) Closer to home, Erin Mendenhall was sworn in as mayor of Salt Lake City and faces a handful of crises right off the bat. Why would anyone want to be mayor? Who knows, but Mendenhall will be up to her ankles in alligators over homelessness, the Inland Port, affordable housing and pot holes — don't forget the potholes. Mendenhall's administration likely will be an improvement over that of Jackie Biskupski, but that's a pretty low bar. And Mendenhall actually likes people, which is something of a plus in public service. Soon the new mayor, along with the rest of us, will have to gird her loins (can we say that?) because our illustrious lawmakers will convene to make Utah an even better place with legislation banning all kinds of bad stuff, including immorality. Hold on. Wilson insists the Legislature already banned immorality. OK, sure, but you know they'll do it again — they do it every year. Until then, let's  put our efforts into Life Elevated.
All right Wilson, get the band to send us out with something apropos: Panama Red, Panama Red / He'll steal your woman, then he'll rob your head / Panama Red, Panama Red... My woman said, "Hey Wilson / You're actin' crazy like a clown" / Nobody feels like working / Panama Red is back in town / Panama Red, Panama Red...
