why they lost their minds (and fought the wars)
written by @alpineandbucky, art by @reagy-jay for @starspangledbigbang
Explicit | 10K words Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply James “Bucky” Barnes/Steve Rogers
Captain America Bucky Barnes, USO Performer Steve Rogers, World War II, Misunderstandings, Pining, Cross-dressing, Porn with Plot, Bittersweet Ending
Summary:
The year was 1943, and World War II continued across Europe. In the USA, the top-secret op known as OPERATION: REBIRTH produced an experimental SUPER SOLDIER SERUM. The test subject's name: JAMES BUCHANAN BARNES. *** After the death of Abraham Erskine, Bucky wanted to put Project Rebirth behind him. Parading around on stage was not how he wanted to honor the good men who lost their lives, especially when he was fit to hold up his end of the bargain. Despite his best efforts to distance himself from the gaudy mantle, a navy cowl appears at base camp framing a familiar pair of blue eyes. Memories of the best part of his last few years surface, and Bucky is reminded of what he left back in Brooklyn. He quickly realizes just how much he has sacrificed for the greater good, but it seems the universe has decided to reward his efforts with a taste of something sweeter, if only for one night.

Content Guidelines/Code of Conduct
Every creation must be centered around at least one character who has appeared in the Captain America MCU trilogy or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier television show, or has been Captain America in any media canon. Any and all additional characters are welcome as long as the main focus is on the Cap-centric character.
Any and all ratings are welcome, as well as any setting, be it canon, canon divergent, or AU. Creators will be able to outline their preferences on rating, do-not-wants, and collaboration interest level if desired so that participants may take that into consideration when choosing what stories they’d like to collab with.
Please be mindful of portraying marginalized communities respectfully. This page from Writing With Color has a list of blogs and resources that discuss diversity in writing. Any creations that sympathetically portray hate groups or actively promote racism, transphobia, homophobia, etc. will not be accepted.
All fics must be edited, beta read, and legible. All content must be thoroughly and appropriately tagged.
Please be respectful of your fellow participants. This event is designed to be inclusive regarding characters, ships, kinks, etc. and therefore we will not allow kinkshaming or ship/character bashing within event spaces. We are a diverse community and will not tolerate any racism, transphobia, homophobia, harassment, etc. This includes harassment, targeting, and general inappropriate behavior towards the mods, who are fans just like you, doing this for fun in their spare time to share more Captain America love.
Tumblr media
What sort of content am I committing to if I sign up?
Authors will be required to create one original, cohesive story with a minimum of 5k words (no maximum). Artists will claim one or more stories (depending on the number of sign-ups we receive, as well as artist interest) and create one piece inspired by that story. Each collab team will be required to create a banner for the master post as well.
We are also accepting sign-ups for pinch hitters (both author and artist) and beta readers. You can sign up for multiple roles, or just one role. Pinch hitters and beta readers do not need to commit to anything at the time of sign up; you’ll be notified when we need your help and can decide at that time whether you’re able to participate.
What sort of artwork is acceptable?
All art must be visual, original art. By original art, we mean that the final product must be an original product of the artist. Using photos for reference is fine, and you can use whatever traditional or digital medium you require, so long as the art starts and finishes as your own product. Photo manips are allowed as long as they have been significantly edited, via Photoshop or other programs, to clearly resemble original art. Hit up the mods if you need clarity on an idea.
What ships are allowed?
Every creation must be centered around at least one character who has appeared in the Captain America MCU trilogy or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier television show, or has been Captain America in any media canon. Any and all additional characters are welcome as long as the main focus is on the Cap-centric character. Other than that note, we welcome any and all ships for the main pairings, including polyamorous ships, queerplatonic ships, and genfic. All side pairings are welcome as well.
Are there any age restrictions for participation?
Sorry, but yes. You’ve got to be 18 or over to participate.
Can I use a work that I’ve published previously, or that’s been sitting in my drafts for 3 years?
For this event, we need all original content, none of which has been published previously. That being said, if you’ve got an outline or a draft that’s been hanging around your WIP folder for too long, now’s the perfect time to dust it off and finish it! You can submit that work to be claimed.
What if a friend and I want to work together?
Writing or artist teams are welcome, but since claims will be anonymous, no author/artist team sign-ups will be allowed.
How will claiming work?
Authors will create slides with information on their stories, and authors must have a minimum of 1k words written to be considered for claims.
The mods will compile the author submissions anonymously to share with the artists prior to claims. Once claims open, artists will submit their choices via Google forms.
Where are the submissions going to be hosted?
All submissions will be posted on AO3. We will also promote all creations on Tumblr and Twitter.
What if I can’t finish on time, will I get an extension?
We’ll have plenty of check-ins to make sure that you will indeed finish on time! If you’ve got any concerns, the mods will work with you to find a solution on a case-by-case basis. We will also enlist the help of pinch hitters if necessary. If you drop before claims, there will be no penalty; however if you ghost us after claims and leave your partner hanging, we’ll take that into account for participation in future events depending on the circumstances.
We do ask that as you know you can no longer continue in the event please speak with a mod as soon as possible. We understand situations happen but the sooner we know, the sooner we can get your partner a pinch-hitter.
Can I post work-in-progress snippets on my personal blog?
Yes! Prior to claims, all snippets and sneak peeks must be shared anonymously; the mods will assist in this process. Once claims are done, you will be able to announce your team and share snippets as you create. Please keep snippets to 500 words or less, and roughly ⅓ of the artwork or less.
I can’t sign up, but I still want to participate, what can I do?
No worries, there are lots of ways for you to help support the Bang! Follow us on Twitter and Tumblr; reblog, comment, and share our posts to spread the word. We’ll also be asking for help with beta reading, pinch-hitting, and other cool ways for you to get involved!
Where can I find event info?
Info on the SS(M)B will be posted on Tumblr (@starspangledbigbang) and Twitter (@starspangledbb), with a collection on AO3. We will also have a Discord for participants.
Who are the mods?
Your friendly SS(M)B mods are bangyababy, Call_Me_Kayyyyy, and nachodiablo.
I’ve got more questions, help!
No problem, we’re happy to hear from you! Ping us on one of the social media sites above, or email starspangledmods at gmail dot com.
So, where can I sign up? You can sign up here!

I'm so excited to share the first snip of my Star Spangled Big Bang collab with @yavannie. look at this beautiful piece she's busy with!!
this is a pre-catws fic wherein the Winter Solider is assigned as Sam’s EXO-7 partner. and we all know the fate of Sam’s EXO-7 partner. probably a good thing Bucky’s got serum huh? angst babeeey.
Winters is a little weird.
He's quiet, keeps to himself, and walks around with a stick up his ass. He never smiles, never laughs, and wears his damn leather gloves and long sleeves all day, every day.
Says it’s because he's got circulation issues, and Sam guesses that's a thing; his Titi had bad legs and always wore those compression tights to help with it. Winters never takes it off, though, he doesn't shower in the communal bathrooms with Sam, and he's whisked off in that black SUV quite often and only brought back when Sam's asleep.
And that's fine too; it's none of Sam's business what another squadron does with their soldiers. But he's also fit on another level. Sam's never seen him break a sweat, not once, and he bolts through each test circuit like a goddamn hurricane.
"This is worse," Sam heaves, “than basic!" He’s leaning against a wooden post halfway through the second lap.
Sam aced the first round at full speed, confident that he had it in the bag, but now Winters zips past him like a lightning bolt. Like it's nothing.
"Keep up now," he says. And though his tone is flat and inflectionless, it stuns Sam for a split second because the man's got a personality, after all.
"Oh okay, I see how it is!" Sam shouts, gets going again, and catches up to him on the track's curve. "Hey! Slow down!" he says, now running beside him.
Winters looks at him, frowns, then looks ahead again without slowing. "Slowing down defeats the purpose of a speed test."
"Okay fine, race you to the end then."
"This is not a race—"
But Sam's already hurtling toward the finish line. "Keep up now!"

Favorite plays? Best plays? Do many overlap?
I've pretty much confined myself to the classics, so yes, they overlap, almost comically so.
Ancients: I need to reread the Oresteia—I haven't actually read it since a one-sitting rapture by Vellacott's old Penguin Classic translation on a Sunday night in my teens—but as a founding myth of civilization, it doesn't get any better. Then Sophocles's Theban plays, then Medea and Bacchae for Euripides. Never quite got Aristophanes and have yet even to read his most famous comedy. The Romans, the medievals: pretty much a blank, despite what Shakespeare took from Terence and Seneca. The East: pretty much a blank, though Kalidasa and a volume of Noh plays sit somewhere on my shelves.
Shakespeare: Hamlet is best—as in the best play ever written and the big bang of literary modernity—then Lear. Among the less-discussed, my favorite is The Winter's Tale. My current novel is obsessed with The Tempest. I have a less intimate relationship with the comedies and histories than with the tragedies and romances, but do admire Much Ado and Twelfth Night and the Henriad. Among non-Shakespearean early modern English plays, I've adored The Duchess of Malfi.
Modern European: Is Goethe's Faust a play, exactly? It's not not a play. It rivals Hamlet on the one side, Ulysses on the other. Then Ibsen, for the differently Faustian Peer Gynt and Brand, and for The Wild Duck—the greatest bourgeois tragedy, Arthur Miller be damned—the play that marks the transition from the smug naturalism of A Doll's House and Ghosts and An Enemy of the People to the chastened symbolism of The Master Builder and Hedda Gabbler and When We Dead Awaken. Shamefully, there are plays in the realist cycle I haven't read, though, and I still need to get to Emperor and Galilean. As for other dramatists, Chekhov's fine—I like The Cherry Orchard but somehow missed Three Sisters—and Strindberg still awaits my attention.
Modern British: Wilde and Shaw, Shaw and Wilde! Anarchist aestheticism vs. socialist realism in perhaps their best and purest forms, a double-helixed locus classicus. Salomé, The Importance of Being Earnest; Man and Superman, Major Barbara. After them, who? More Irish: Yeats's symbolic ritual drama, Synge's vernacular pageant (The Playboy of the Western World—so good), and, among our contemporaries, By the Bog of Cats. Beckett is fine, Endgame more interesting than Godot. Among the modern English, I never quite got Pinter; Stoppard, Shaw's heir, interests me more, Arcadia being the best I've read or seen. And then, if we can stand in her blast radius, Sarah Kane, more for 4.48 Psychosis than for Blasted.
Modern American: We owe it all to O'Neill even if he's uneven, like Dreiser among the novelists. I like Strange Interlude, if only for the novelty, and of course Long Day's Journey into Night. Still need to read The Iceman Cometh. Tennessee Williams is best—A Streetcar Named Desire is the great American play to go with Moby-Dick as the great American novel and Leaves of Grass as the great American poem for a star-spangled gay-male trifecta—and then August Wilson, more for Joe Turner than for Fences, though I still need to read the whole Century Cycle. Arthur Miller: overrated, as I've implied.
I'll leave you to compile the shadow-list of my obvious omissions; it's terrifying when you start thinking about how much you haven't read.

Fun with Flags
Tumblr media
I should have posted this on Flag Day (June 14th) but, as it so often does, life got in the way. So here’s a bonus Word of the Day you can save for next June. The Word of the Day is “flag.”
We’re talking about the noun here – a banner (star-spangled or not), pennant, banderole or gonfalon, generally made of cloth and attached by one end to a pole or rope, used as an emblem, symbol or signal.
If you were a regular viewer of The Big Bang Theory on TV, you’ll know that “Fun with Flags” was a recurring bit, an online web show within the sitcom. “Fun with Flags” was comedy gold.
So, where did the word “flag” come from? Who the hell knows? No one can say for sure, although there is some speculation that the noun is related to the verb “to flag,” meaning to droop, go limp, flutter or flap around loosely. The verb probably had its roots in Old Norse “flaka,” to flicker, flutter or hang loose.
The only national flag that is non-quadrilateral (that is, four-sided) is the flag of Nepal. At least one online source says the jagged edges are supposed to represent the Himalayas.
The flag of Mozambique is one of the very few national flags featuring weapons, and possibly the only one with an automatic weapon – in this case, an AK-47. There’s also an open book and a hoe, for what it’s worth.
And for overall weirdness, it’s hard to beat Sicily’s flag, which features three bare legs (a “triskeles”) surrounding a Medusa head, with three stalks of wheat growing out of it (Some say it’s three ears of corn, but it sure looks like wheat to me). We could go into the symbolism of all that at some length, but that’s all the time we’ve got for today’s episode of Fun with Flags…and Words.

19 & 23 for wrapped ask game? 💞
Hi! Thank you for asking ❤️
19: Did you do any collaborative works this year?
I was in a lot of bangs this year for someone who said they wouldn’t do bangs this year and I love the collabs that came out of them: Stucky with dinosaurs art that inspired “This Was Not on The Brochure“ in the CapRBB, my art for “knew we’d be alright“ by @burnin-brighter (Shrunkyclunks Bang) and I got to work with her again in the Star Spangled Mini Bang and created art for her fic “t’aimer sur les bords du lac“. There is also art I made for the OFMD Big Bang, which I got to post alone because my author had to drop out.
Outside of bangs, I had a lovely collab with @mslaevateinn, who wrote a short fic to go with this redrawing of a Stucky piece from 2019.
23: What WIP(s) are you taking into next year with you?
So many. Too many to count. My WIP folders are a scary place. There is one art related WIP that I’m really excited about, but I’ll definitely have to keep working on it for a few more months, there is a Stucky in a German train station art, which I think is definitely worth finishing, and a sad Ed art with a mysterious light source (mysterious to me, I still have to decide on it).
I hope you have a great rest of the week! ❤️

3) what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?
hi there! thank you so much for sending this ask! 🥰🥰🥰
3) what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?
oh goodness, that depends! sometimes i get a random scene from later on in the fic and have to build backward to get to it. other times, like the one i’m writing for the star-spangled big bang, the fic comes to me in chronological order and just flows so well. i don’t know that i’ve ever written my favorite scenes first simply because my ideas usually come to me vaguely formed and i have no idea where it’s gonna go, i just type until the words dry up.
send me author asks :)

COMMENTARY:
"God Bless the USA" is the National Anthem of Conservative draft dodgers, Walmart Warriors, Neo-Nazi Jesus Freak and right-wing losers like One-Eyed Elmer Rhodes,
Listen the lyrics: If, in spite of the fact that my life has gone to shit because of the economic policies of the people I vote for, it's Patriotic duty of every Suffering Servant for Jesus rejoice in being Red Blooded America Patriot like Rush Limbaugh, Tucker Carlson, Tobey Keith and Trump. It is my opinion that the meth epidemic among white supremacist communities is being driven by the Nazification of Supply Side Economics, FOX News and the Total Depravity Gospel of Campus Crusade for Christ. The MAGA Conservatives people who are being eaten alive by all things January 6 are the same people who have bought into the lyrics, hook like and sinker, '
God Bless the USA is the right wing response to John Lennon's "Imagine'.
I'm not a big John Lennon Fan. He and Yoko are what serious marxist call "Radish": Red on the outside but Upper East Side Salon Intellectuals with pretensions of rebellion,
But the fact of the matter is, "Imagine" is where Pauline Theology and Woodstock converge,
God Bless the USA is for people who think Toby Keith's attack of the Chicks over the Chicks properly identifying the invasion of Iraq a war crime before the fact as a righteous and patriotic American act of heroism,
As a Vietnam vet, it was an obscene act, I went to Vietnam so that the Chicks and Jane Fonda could go anywhere in the world and protest the fact I was in Vietnam defending Toby Keith's right to be the perfect Texas Ted Cruz red neck asshole with gun racks my pickup because it turns the other incels on.
"Doing more with less is the anti-DEI equivalent of "God Bless the USA , it is a self-fulfilling prophecy,
Biden's Build Back Better is the self-fulfilling prophecy of the Manhattan Project: Biggest Bang for the Buck$.
As a Vietnam vet, I hate "God Bless the USA". All the white supremacists assholes I've had to deal with since I got back from Vietnam are lined up behind it. It's like saluting the "January 6 Hostages: cover of the Star Spangled Banner. Doe it not occur to anyone but me that the collapse of the Key Bridge is God's way of saying "Shut the fuck up, Len Greenwood> Your song is a turd in my punch bowl of Blessings,"

2022 Fic Roundup Meme
Total Fics Posted: 975 so far (two are hidden right now because they're for anonymous exchanges!) but by the end of the year, it SHOULD be 1,108. I've got three more exchanges due by the 31st, plus 40 #hanukkahbingo drabbles, and then hopefully daily drabbles are back now that the Star-Spangled Big Bang is over and my brain is being a little less eaten. We'll see if Fandom Trumps Hate starts eating my brain, though, because that's the longest of my remaining 2022 stuff!
Total Words Posted: By the end of the year, it should be ~175,000. Currently it's 150,181.
Total Words (of Anything Excluding Blogs) Written: Somewhere between 200,000-250,000, I think, which is pretty usual for me. Most of what I write I just kind of immediately post, but I do have some WIPs kicking around the ol' WIP folder. I didn't start using a comprehensive wordcount tracker until mid-October, so I don't know exactly!
My favorite fic story this year: Either Not In The Answer But The Question or Five Times Captain America Fucked A USO Girl & One Time Steve Rogers Got Fucked -- I'm proud of both, but in different ways. I think both really challenged some of my writing hang-ups and turned out well. I'm happy with all of the longer-than-a-drabble stuff that I wrote this year, though! And I mean, most of the drabbles, too, but there aren't any that necessarily stick out in my head as far and away better than the others.
My best story this year: Not In The Answer But The Question, although I do feel like I rushed the pacing on the last quarter because I had to make the BB deadline (hah). People seem to think it still sticks the landing, though!
Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I'm actually going to give a real answer for this one this year, which I usually don't, but I'm going to say that I thought both a smile on your immortal face and Gee, I Hope You're Ready for a Fic About Death would get a couple more hits than they have. I know neither is a massive fandom, but Beetlejuice The Musical DOES have over a thousand fics and there ARE a lot of WLW American Girl fans, so I thought both would get a little more traction than they have. But it's okay! I had a ton of fun writing them either way, and I'm really happy with how they turned out.
Sexiest Story: Five Times Captain America Fucked A USO Girl & One Time Steve Rogers Got Fucked is the smuttiest thing I've written in YEARS and I think the sex all turned out pretty well! I don't write many E-rated drabbles because it's difficult to create sexual tension within the word limit in a way that's ~satisfying, so there isn't a ton of competition haha. I am going to attempt the MCU Kink Bingo in 2023 though!
Most fun story: Ooh, good question. I'm gonna say Gee, I Hope You're Ready for a Fic About Death because it makes me laugh and because it was a really quick writing process because I was having fun. "Fun" isn't necessarily my brand when it comes to writing? For someone who only likes bubblegum pop and Disney Channel Original Movies, I pretty much only write super thoughtsy-feelsy quiet, meditative character studies, lol.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: To coopt myself from the 2012 meme, “if I write a fic and it doesn’t change my feelings on the characters or fandom in some way, then I don’t think I wrote it correctly.”
Hardest story to write: I'm going to answer this with one that isn't posted yet and say my massive shrinkyclinks longfic that I started in 2021 and had hoped to finish and post this year! It's been a much slower writing process than I wanted it to be, just because I want to get it Exactly Right and because longfic makes me super anxious about My Value And Worth In This World Hinge On This Story And Whether People Like It.
Biggest surprise: Reiterating from last year's meme -- "Actually sticking to the drabbling! In the past when I tried Three-Line Fic Thursday and Five-Sentence Friday, I failed miserably, and I’ve failed myself at drabble challenges, too. But for some reason this time it’s stuck and is genuinely working to remind me that I can get words out, I can have ideas, and I can get those ideas out in words. Yay!"
A story I want remembered: I mean, if I wrote anything this year that anyone remembers fondly, that makes me happy. But I do have a soft spot for Not In The Answer But The Question.
Resolutions for 2023: FINISH LENT FROM TOMORROW (TODAY WAS TOO SMALL FOR US). BE A FINISHER. FINISH THE THING. Also, do Femslash February and a drabble March Madness again because they were really fun this year!

The Sassy Chronicles of Clumpiness: Atlas Spills the Cosmic Tea
Oh, dear denizens of the Tumblr-verse, gather 'round, for we, the mighty narrators of celestial gossip, have some piping hot cosmic tea to spill. It's so scalding, even the kettle of Hestia herself would blush with envy. We've got a tale so juicy, it makes the drama on Mount Olympus look like a polite tea party.
Let's get straight to the chase: we've been chit-chatting with our old pal Atlas. Yeah, that's right, the titan with shoulders broader than the horizon, and he's been bending our ears about the universe's clumpiness. And no, we're not talking about the lumpy oatmeal left over from breakfast with the Pleiades.
As Atlas hoists the celestial sphere, he's been doing more than just flexing his titan-sized biceps—he's been snooping around the cosmos, and guess what? The universe is as clumpy as the cottage cheese that Aphrodite refuses to eat. Why, you ask? Dark matter, baby. That's the invisible VIP at this cosmic party, and it's got the universe clumping together like the gods on a good day in the Elysian Fields.
Now, hold onto your constellations, because the brainiacs over at the University of Toronto, who apparently have nothing better to do than solve the mysteries of the universe, have been peeping through their telescopes and decoding the secrets of the night sky like it's a game of celestial Sudoku. They've got this theory, see, about dark matter and its BFF, axions. No, not onions, folks—axions. They're like the new kids on the block in particle physics, hypothetical and as hard to pin down as Hermes on a courier run.
So, what's the big deal with these axions? They're part of the tale that could explain why the universe isn't as smooth as Apollo's lyre. Turns out, dark matter isn't just hanging around, sprinkling itself evenly like Demeter's bountiful harvest. It's more like Dionysus after a few cups of wine—clumping here, partying there, and generally having a rollicking good time shaping the cosmos.
And as for galaxies and all the shiny bling of the universe, they're just following the dark matter's lead, swirling into the clumpy cosmic conga like they've heard Pan's flute and can't help but join the dance.
Oh, but let us not forget the mortals peering into the abyss with their fancy gadgets and sharp wits, trying to catch a glimpse of these elusive axions. They're tossing around equations and simulations like Hephaestus at his forge, crafting theories as sturdy as the chains that bound poor Prometheus.
Now, lest we forget, all of this starry-eyed research is being done with a backdrop of the Cosmic Microwave Background—that's the universe's baby picture, in case you didn't know. It's like a family portrait from 380,000 years after the Big Bang, with every cosmic entity photobombing in the background.
So here we are, mere mortals, trying to decode the secrets that Atlas has been privy to since time immemorial. It's like trying to steal fire from the gods, but hey, if Prometheus could do it, why not us?
In the end, our quest to uncover the mysteries of the universe's clumpiness is as epic as any of Hercules' labors. So grab your digital parchment and quills, oh noble netizens, and bear witness to the cosmic revelations that could very well change how we see our star-spangled existence. Because in the end, isn't that what being a stargazer is all about?
So, laugh in the face of clumpiness, thumb your noses at ignorance, and wink at the universe, because we're all in on the secret now. And that, our Tumblr-friends, is the tea, served hot and cosmic, just the way Atlas likes it.

Saw someone asking about end of year fanfic things with letters instead of numbers so I'm gonna do one better
XIII, XXII, XXX please
13. favorite writing song/artist/album of this year: oh god, this is the worst question to ask me😂 my music tastes are so erratic and nonsensical. It's all over the place, and i need a different song for each mood I'm writing. BUT i have this standard playlist with a bunch of remixes by DJ noize or some guy, and i absolutely love it when i need to focus.
22. events you participated in this year: Well... You know 😏 i did the star spangled big bang that's busy posting now. Also did MTH, which i will begin writing in the new year.
30. favorite fandom to read fic from this year: 😗 you're assuming I'm reading from any fandom. No ok but I've read mostly sambucky this year. I also had some fun with stevebuckypeggy fics.
