Fun with Flags
Tumblr media
I should have posted this on Flag Day (June 14th) but, as it so often does, life got in the way. So here’s a bonus Word of the Day you can save for next June. The Word of the Day is “flag.”
We’re talking about the noun here – a banner (star-spangled or not), pennant, banderole or gonfalon, generally made of cloth and attached by one end to a pole or rope, used as an emblem, symbol or signal.
If you were a regular viewer of The Big Bang Theory on TV, you’ll know that “Fun with Flags” was a recurring bit, an online web show within the sitcom. “Fun with Flags” was comedy gold.
So, where did the word “flag” come from? Who the hell knows? No one can say for sure, although there is some speculation that the noun is related to the verb “to flag,” meaning to droop, go limp, flutter or flap around loosely. The verb probably had its roots in Old Norse “flaka,” to flicker, flutter or hang loose.
The only national flag that is non-quadrilateral (that is, four-sided) is the flag of Nepal. At least one online source says the jagged edges are supposed to represent the Himalayas.
The flag of Mozambique is one of the very few national flags featuring weapons, and possibly the only one with an automatic weapon – in this case, an AK-47. There’s also an open book and a hoe, for what it’s worth.
And for overall weirdness, it’s hard to beat Sicily’s flag, which features three bare legs (a “triskeles”) surrounding a Medusa head, with three stalks of wheat growing out of it (Some say it’s three ears of corn, but it sure looks like wheat to me). We could go into the symbolism of all that at some length, but that’s all the time we’ve got for today’s episode of Fun with Flags…and Words.

I have terminal brainrot.
----
[[ID: Eight pencil-and-paper sketches of various characters from The Owl House.
The first is a sketch of Amity Blight, with her Season 1 hairstyle and school uniform. She’s angry, and a lock of her hair hangs down over her face. Her fists are covered in abomination goop like boxing gloves. She’s punching upward with her left fist.
The second is a chibi doodle of Willow Park T-posing. The caption under the image reads “Dad says it’s my turn on the braincell”.
The third has two doodles of Luz Noceda. On the left are a couple of superimposed doodles of her going feral. The superimposition effect makes her look like she’s vibrating rapidly. On the right is a serene-looking Luz cupping a light orb in her hands.
The fourth is a sketch of Edric and Emira Blight, both grinning at the camera. I drew this one from memory, so I got their hairstyles very wrong. The caption underneath the image reads: “they are going to c / cause problems on purpose”
The fifth shows Luz entering a room, looking sheepish. She says, “Sorry I’m late, I-” and is abruptly cut off by a loud voice from offscreen yelling, “WHY WEREN’T YOU AT ELF PRACTICE?”
The sixth is an image of two Gus Porters. One is standing calmly, while the other holds a gun to the back of his head. The image resembles the “trust no one not even yourself” meme.
The seventh shows Gus, smiling, gesturing to an easel on which is written “Fun with Flags”. This is a Big Bang Theory reference.
The eighth shows Gus, grimacing, saying, “Wouldn’t YOU like to know, weatherboy?” into his dad’s mic. His dad looks surprised. This is a reference to a viral video in which a young boy says the same thing to a reporter. Fun Fact: in the original video, the weatherman is actually the boy’s father! The More You Know

When Izzy first walked out I was worried that he would be made into a joke that the crew would laugh at
Tumblr media
but then he started singing and the dancing began and I realized that he wasn’t meant to be a joke at all. This is the most open and happy we’ve ever seen Izzy and the show treated it that way. Not mocking him but instead celebrating this moment.
When we talk about queer representation it’s usually just focused on queer relationships, but what I love about this episode is it shows other sides of being queer. That moment where Izzy saw Wee John doing his makeup and had a realization that he wanted that too? That is what being queer means to me. The crew singing along and cheering for him? That is what being apart of the queer community means to me.
What i love about this show is that it shows queer joy, not in a sanitized way, but in away that is messy, beautiful, and without any mockery or shame.

I passed this trio of flags a lot on the walk from our hotel to the convention center, where I found myself on most days, and while I am actually a fan of the conical flagpoles--not something you see every day--it drove me crazy that the Texas and Dallas flags were at the same height as the American flag. I’m not one of those people who obsess over the flag, but as someone who would hold flags in the marching band during parades, I was keenly aware that I needed to keep the state flag lower than the American flag at all times. Maybe they’ve made edits to the Flag Code since then, but I also find it funny that the Texas flag is definitely bigger than the United States flag here, but I guess that’s what happens when you go to Dallas.
In the bottom photo you can clearly see that the Texas flag is bigger, and that cracks me up so much.
We’re going back to Texas next week, so I’m curious to ask my friends who live there if the bigger TX flag is A Thing in Austin as well as Dallas--more to come on this.

19-20 August 2023
I kicked off my birthday “weekend” by celebrating my previous birthday, as I had an outstanding birthday present to cash in! It was an unusual one – an alpaca walk with my sister – which had been postponed a few times due to #life, but the 363-day wait was well worth it!
We met up at Abbots View Farm and were greeted by a friendly pair of staff members, who gave us and about ten other people a brief lowdown on safety & etiquette before handing us the reins to an alpaca apiece; I opted for Sir Keith (née Sir Kicks-a-Lot) and Hannah took charge of Freckle. We all followed the leader around the farm at a very leisurely pace; alpacas will not be rushed, so what is normally a 15-minute walk at most lasted about 45 minutes. But that was part of the fun – we had plenty of time to ask questions about our walking buddies and give them some pats/strokes. Sir Keith was completely chilled the whole way round (hence his rebrand), and once we all bimbled back to the starting point, we fed some more alpacas and a few ducks, said hello to the pigs and goats, and enjoyed a complimentary lil’ cake in the barn before returning to mine.
Tumblr media
We weren’t quite alpaca’d out, so after we’d played some quizzes and jammed to some music we revisited an underrated Disney film from our childhood - The Emperor’s New Groove – and enjoyed the irreverent, fourth-wall breaking silliness. I also got Hannah re-hooked on another throwback from yesteryear, a puzzle game called Hexic (on the Xbox) that I think she’d quite happily still be playing if we didn't have things to do the following day:
We drove to Sunningdale to see Mum, Helen and Granny for a shared birthday celebration for me and Mum: as well as the sparkling company, there was great food, a few gifts, and some excellent games on offer.
Tumblr media
The “Tennis Bin Challenge” made a much anticipated return - I managed an appropriate score of 21 and even Granny had a go! However, the undeniable standout of the day was Helen’s “Fun With Flags” game, which required us to draw flags for countries that began with each letter of S/U/E/B/E/N, with each one scored out of 5 based on accuracy + degree of difficulty! Needless to say I was in my element, and although I didn’t achieve a perfect 5 on any of my drawings, my position as resident flag nerd remains firmly intact. That may be my favourite gift I received!

Underrated moment in "Fun and Games":
When Annie says that Stede "might like the ladies" and Ed does a double take and shakes his head at Stede like: "This...this man? This incredibly fucking gay man?"
Tumblr media
Ed is uncertain about a lot of things in his relationship with Stede, but boy does he know that Stede is gay.
Not to mention that Stede's idea of defending himself is "no, she kissed me and threw up"...
