cannot pick favorite song but I think the ones I’m currently crying over are inkpot gods, old witch sleep & good man grace, chords, blossoms, wild blue yonder, and welly boots. I’ve listened to all of the albums many times already (save me (don’t))

Hellooooooo 😊. For the ruin album ask game, 12 and 15?

12 and 15, got it! Be warned, I wrote this on my phone at about 1:30 in the morning. My already tenuous control over my long-windedness is virtually gone. This isn't quite stream-of-consciousness but it's close.

Which song do I always sing to? I mean, all of them? Lol! I really love the vibes for The Calling (gender, identity, past self versus who you're becoming now, "I really fucking tried" and "I watched that woman drown" and the whole chorus), The Old Witch Sleep and the Good Man Grace is one of those wild songs that makes you feel powerful while regretting your lack of an archenemy to have ~tension~ with, and Ruin itself is just... It's just a really good depiction of repairing a relationship.

The answer is certainly not Chords, but only because I can't get through it without crying. It's a beautiful song but it hits me in a really vulnerable place and I just can't go there often (like Marbles, actually, though Marbles is worse).

Blossoms hits home a lot ("as I make myself acquainted with the saint of never getting it right"), and as an introvert with social anxiety (well, anxiety in general, including social situations), I relate a lot to Drinking Song for the Socially Anxious. I also enjoy D&D and I might dress my cat up as Batman for Halloween.

But I think, ultimately, it might be down to Secret Worlds and Inkpot Gods.

I really love the excited energy of Secret Worlds, "come on!", this sense of wonder, "do I have to be who I am", "cause I will suffer silence for the strings you tune and I will stand what's written for the writer in you/write me well, my love, write me weird, write me willing, write me well". I get a laugh out of Joey's tone of voice at "well, we thought you were mental/you were talking to trees".

And, oh, Inkpot Gods. Just, Joey's whole verse, really, and Madeleines. Really gives me hope and comfort. These aren't tears, it's just your voice learning for once to stand up tall. Making a vow to the dark for someone's life. And then Madeleine shows up with, "what you hear is not silence, it's just the trees waiting to hear what makes you howl", which is such a raw and wild line followed by a moment of actual silence to emphasize the point. Picking up with "what you see is not the dark, it's just the gods upturning inkpots cause they know what you'll become". Just, unending the plans of the gods as they realize you've gone outside their plan, no big deal. And then she doesn't bother to make a vow to some other entity, no, she outright threatens the gods to keep this man safe or else she'll make them pay. I really resonate both with "I will be the man my father never was" and "Cause I'm more than what my mum taught me to be". And, of course, "If I don't make it back from where I've gone, just know I loved you all along."

So, all of that to say, it's probably Inkpot Gods. Especially since it's the last song on the album, it feels like TAD is assuring us as we go on our way that we'll be just fine.

What song would I recommend? Well, I've recently told my mom about Chords, though I didn't technically recommend it because I knew she wouldn't like the swearing. I did tell her about the chorus and "they might laugh because you're leaving but know we'll sing your name when you come home".

The song I've recommended most, actually, is Drinking Song, because I love how it depicts that anxiety so well and how there's no shame or embarrassment over not being an extrovert. I enjoy the bonding moment when you realize someone else at this gathering is also a nerd and it's just such a relief because, whew, I'm not alone anymore. There's someone else standing awkwardly in a corner not knowing what to say to anyone, feeling like a total outsider, wondering when they can finally duck out and missing their cat/questioning why they thought going to hang out with humans was a good idea when they could've been relaxed at home with their cat this whole time. Finding someone you can be an introvert with, someone you can just exist alongside, both of you maybe doing separate things but in the same room and that honestly feels really nice, just existing quietly around someone else without necessarily interacting with them and having that be okay between you.

Marbles: the way they constantly rag on each other but it’s all delivered with so much obvious affection, they way they love each other in old age, “I will wait and hope your eyes aren’t rivers there to weep but a place for crows to rest their feet” KILL ME WHY DON’T YOU, SO GOOD

Welly Boots: MADE ME CRY LIKE A BABY. the fact that they left another pair of boots behind even after their death I cannot deal, and even the feeling of bitterness that comes from a dead or absent parent, they NAILED it

Farewell Wanderlust: I cannot form coherent words about this song, I can easily see why it might be one of your favorites of all time, they really wrote that and said “This is for you.” AND THEIR VOICES! ARE SO POWERFUL!

The Unwanted Animal: five minutes of asking me “aren’t you tired of being nice? don’t you wanna go apeshit?” made me go feral in he best way!

The Horror and the Wild: made me go feral part two!!! made me feel like I was in an epic fantasy story (lots of their other songs made me feel that way too hehe, the orchestration is something fantasy-obsessed younger me would have nutter over)

The Rockrose and the Thistle: so hauntingly beautiful in a way I can’t describe, like staying with someone who hurts and loves you most and not knowing how to help them and the helplessness that comes with that. an “of course we’ll hurt each other” kind of thing. the lack of an instrumental made it even better!!!

Pray: oh how I love when women are angry <3 at men <3 and resent when traditional womanhood and motherhood and genderisms are forced onto them <3 and express that anger in such an explosive way <3

The Old Witch Sleep and the Good Man Grace: so, you said this was Touya’s song and I decided to listen to it with him in mind and...yeah. Yeah. Out of the ones I listened to on my own, my favorites were easily Drinking Song For the Socially Anxious (another one that they literally said “here, this is written for you, go cry now,” it’s like they put what it’s like not knowing how to talk to people and feeling lonely and wanting company but being so content with the loneliness that’s existed for so long that it barely feels different anymore when you can’t find company into exact words so viscerally and...yeah, I sobbed), Little Miss Why So (I suffer from depression and thinking about relationships and stuff, THIS SONG IS BRUTAL), Shower Day (brutal for the same reasons), Wild Blue Yonder (another “of course we’ll hurt each other hand in unloveable hand” type), Inkpot Screaming (more Todoroki fam things...general breaking the cycle of abuse things...incoherent screaming), Pruning Shears (this one’s a little harder to explain but I Love It, kind of like being tired of expectations/waiting for something to happen?), and of course Fair and Chords (still make me cry).

So yeah... I’m obsessed. Thank you so much for introducing me to them, from the lyrics to the orchestration to the little references to literature and mythology, they’re an absolute hidden gem and I have a bunch of new favorite songs. <333

OH MY GOD YES i was debating whether to put it on my rec list for you because its one of my favs but i said ill leave it for later cuz it was getting too long HSDJDHDJ. im so in love w the way the lines overlay it scratches a very specific itch in my brain lmao its so good. another song i was debating to mention was elsa’s song + battle cries!! have you listened to these yet? if not, i HIGHLY recommend you do. theyre SO so good.

AND IM SO GLAD YOU HEARD TOWSGMG OMG I WAS SO OBSESSED W LISTENING TO IT AND THINKING OF TOUYA JSDJHDHNKSDH my absolute favorite thing about this song is the progression of the character in the song and just how WELL it fits w touya’s OWN descent into villainy.. the beginning where he’s being taken care of by this witch, and its so gentle and the singing is so soft.. and then the middle where he’s left that sort of sanctuary and now has to deal w the old man and it gets more violent and intense but also the witch is still there!! and shes trying to help!! but clearly it doesnt do much because in the end... HEJDFH THE ENDING IS WHAT REALLY GETS ME!! BC WE REACH THE TOUYA WE KNOW AND HES GONE MAD AND “sometimes i fall to pieces / just to see what bits of me don’t fit” + “’cause we’ll dance together so close we’re sharing breath / but now i’m leading, doesn’t that just scare you to death?” + “’cause i’m not trapped, oh with you, you see / you’re the one who’s trapped with me.” + “my head’s not yours it’s mine / and i’ll take my fucking time.” THESE LINES JUST MAKE ME GO INSANEEEE. and the tension build up from the beginning of this specific part to the end of the song is done SO WELL!!!

Ooooh okay first one I fell in love with definitely the old witch sleep and the good man grace but was also recommended that song. So outside of recommendations inkpot gods would be my first love.

I definitely listen to the old witch sleep and the good man grace the most I can't get enough of Joey's voice in that song. But I also listen to ruin just as much.

Hmm this one is difficult haven't seen joey perform anything off of ruin yet umm I really enjoy his performance in king and loved the horror and the wild/marbles performance.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

You, a bestiarist (writer of bestiaries), spend your time travelling the Continent, studying creatures in an attempt to make people less afraid of them. One day, you run into a Witcher. And just like that, your world got more interesting.

This is written in second-person, but is treated almost like an oc in certain areas.
