Review: This isn’t terrible for any new player just starting out who doesn’t have very good active defensive memoria. Defense Up at 45% is actually pretty high, though this is balanced out by its terrible passive DEF stats. It’s a little surprising how far up it is when you compare it to other memoria in the game:

He took a step back, breathless from laughter as well. There he stood, tall and proud in his uniform.

'The 107th', he had said with a smile. There was determination in his voice - and sadness. He was proud to be a part of the army; yet at the same time he didn't want to leave you behind. Who knew when you two would see each other again?

ok so there's no world in which doug and maxwell ever date because maxwell is a lesbian and also doesn't like doug that much.

additionally normal world happens after memoria but before desperate times would have happened, which is the spot I like to think of as the herawell toxicity zenith. Maxwell has saved hera's life but also has seen hera's past which puts them in a weird mutual trust spot that also coexists with the knowledge that maxwell is a gun to hera's head. if the last bit stops being true the relationship will rapidly crystallize into a frankly horrifying lesbian thing. They basically go separate ways and don't talk to each other after they get back to earth

Doug and Hera would live together and it takes Hera a week to ask him out. They have a really sweet thing going on where Doug is so so excited to show hera all of the things he loves about earth and being a person and she's happy to have a body to and be able to go to the mall.

Maxwell and Hera run into each other at a bookstore or something and immediately start talking again since hera is ABSOLUTELY smart enough to carry on a text message while at the movies. Hera has a bit of a crisis about the whole "oh no there's two people I really like for different reasons" and scans the entire internet before finding a forum post or something recommending polyamory. Doug and Maxwell are both cool with it and they officially become an item

Hera is living with Doug still because Maxwell has her codependent besties apartment with jacobi but she spends a lot of time at the eiffera house because it's a better place to hang out than the apartment (which is practically a hazard). She and Doug kind of awkwardly sit around next to each other for a while but eventually start bonding because Hera refuses to watch Star Wars with Eiffel and jacobi makes fun of star trek every time Maxwell watches it. They still only really hang out 1 on 1 when they're Doing Things but they're moderately healthy metamours.

Jacobi is also at the house a lot because that's where Maxwell is and he and Eiffel bond over how little fun they have during game nights.

I was wondering if you had any more thoughts on the mouth of Sauron? The version where he did defect is interesting, what would make him do that? I know Tolkien started a story which involved Melkor/Sauron cults in Gondor after the war, but that idea makes more sense to me as something that would happen in Ecthelion’s and Denethor’s rule, a response to Sauron returning among those who expect him to win quickly and want to save themselves. Maybe he was involved in that before fleeing when they were banned and cracked down on? If he was from a prominent noble family I can imagine it being a major scandal, either if he was kidnapped or defected.

I find all of Tolkien's possible backstories for the Mouth of Sauron to be quite fascinating. To answer your question, I have done a little research on Gondor during the reigns of Steward Ecthelion and Denethor. In 2951, two years before Ecthelion took the throne, Sauron declared himself openly, so dark forces were stirring in Middle-earth. I could not find any reference to internal conflict within Gondor at this time, but the possibility of Melkor/Sauron cults operating in secret is an intriguing one. If Tolkien entertained the idea of these cults arising in the days of peace after Sauron's defeat, it could be entirely possible that there were disloyal Gondorians who secretly served Sauron in the days of the Dark Lord's power.

This concept of Gondorian traitors in league with Sauron would fit in nicely with the second discarded backstory which Tolkien created for the Mouth of Sauron: "But it is said that he was a renegade, son of a house of wise and noble men in Gondor, who becoming enamoured of evil knowledge entered the service of the Dark Tower, and because of his cunning [and the fertile cruelty of his mind] [and servility] he grew ever higher in the Lord’s favour…" (“The Black Gate Opens,” The War of the Ring, p. 431)

In the published version of LOTR, Faramir says, "It is not said that evil arts were ever practiced in Gondor, or that the Nameless One was ever named in honour there […]" ("The Window on the West," The Two Towers, p. 286). However, he does go on to say that many among the Gondorian nobility yearned for immortality, as had the Numenoreans. "Kings made tombs more splendid than houses of the living […]," and "[…] in secret chambers withered men compounded strong elixirs, or in high cold towers asked questions of the stars." To me, this implies that some of the Gondorian kings and nobles were dabbling in alchemy, sorcery, and other forms of magic in an attempt to evade old age and death.

One of the major themes in Tolkien's writing is that it is VERY BAD to attempt to halt change, and a desire to do so leaves one vulnerable to the schemes of Sauron. While Faramir implies that Gondor's flirtation with elaborate tombs and preservation magic diminished with the rule of the kings, perhaps that was not truly the case.

If there was an element of internal corruption within Gondor, the return of Sauron to Mordor in 2951 would definitely have stirred the murky waters. When Faramir says that evil arts were never practiced in Gondor, he was comparing Gondor to Numenor. While Numenor descended into evil and wicked deeds, Gondor remained upon the path of light. However, individuals do not always represent their country, and there may have been a dark malignancy buried deep under the surface.

If one entertains the possibility that the Mouth of Sauron was a renegade Gondorian nobleman in league with the Dark Lord, perhaps his true loyalties were discovered and he was forced to flee Gondor. Logically, this would indeed cause quite a scandal! However, it's possible that his defection was covered up so as to avoid bringing shame to his family, or to discourage others from switching allegiances. It's also possible that the Gondorians practice damnatio memoriae - the removal of the name of a disgraced person from all official records. The ancient Egyptians practiced this custom, and Tolkien compares Numenor and Gondor to ancient Egypt on several occasions. Over the years, fans have theorized that this is why there is no record of the names of the three Numenorean lords who became Nazgul.

The Dubiously Needed, Unnecessarily Extensive Magia Record Stat Sheet Guide (Rarity)

This is a bit of a weird one to start with. Rarity…has absolutely no influence on a character’s canonical strength. It is a purely gacha-based mechanic, intended to sort characters for a gacha-based purpose. Really, it has no place in an OC guide. It’s not like we’re going to be pumping out mods with our own OCs tomorrow. (Though, if we do that, hit me up, I would be so down.)

However…a character’s rarity does influence a unit’s stats. So I felt like it would be wrong of me not to mention it. A 2⋆ unit and a 3⋆ unit with the same type and growth type will have different stats and that can be disorienting. So, here’s a quick overview. 

A character’s base rarity can be anything from ⋆ to ⋆⋆⋆⋆. 1 ⋆ characters are generally not included in the gacha and are instead given out for free or bought in an event shop. 2 ⋆ and 3 ⋆ characters can be either bought in an event shop or rolled in the gacha. 4 ⋆ characters are almost always gacha-exclusive. In this context, stars determine a character’s rarity. 

The more stars a character has, the stronger their base stats are. This can be evened out to some degree with Awakening, where any character can be raised up to 5 ⋆ with the stats to match. However, a character with a higher rarity will always have a higher stat total than a character with a lower rarity. 

To give you an example, here are two units of two different rarities, but the same element, type, and growth type, at maximum Awakening. Keep in mind that this is without memoria, Spirit Enhancement or Attribute Enhancement. 

Tsuruno Yui (2⋆, Flame, Magia Type, ATTACK Growth Type)

HP: 18,927

ATK: 8,552

DEF: 6,056

Touka Satomi (4⋆, Flame, Magia Type, ATTACK Growth Type)

HP: 21,019

ATK: 9,803

DEF: 6,072

Though Tsuruno and Touka both have Attack-focused stats, it is Touka with the higher Attack stat, as she has the higher rarity. She also has higher HP and slightly higher Defense. 

What does this mean for character creation? Uh…well, it could mean something, or it could mean nothing. It really depends on how specific you want to be with your stat totals. 

How you decide your characters’ rarity is totally up to you. You could rank them lowest to highest, based on their level of skill. Or you could make them all 4⋆ because you love them! This is totally valid! I have done the same thing many times. 

As a final note, there is some difference between unlimited and limited 4⋆. This is another purely gacha-based designation. Unlimited characters can be pulled on any banner at any time, while limited characters are only available on a banner for a specified period. This does not matter for us. What DOES matter is that limited characters often have better stats than unlimited characters, because gacha games gotta make that money. Example part 2!

As you can see, while Ren and Vampire Kanagi are both 4⋆, Vampire Kanagi has the higher total in each stat. 

Not all of these differences are significant (Ren and Vampire Kanagi have like a 200-point difference in their Defense stats), but I wanted to mention it for any further discrepancies. Again, whether this matters to you or not is your own personal interpretation! I promise, nobody is going to yell at you if your unlimited OC’s ATK stat is 20 points past the unlimited threshold. They aren’t characters you can actually roll for, so balance is a meaningless concept and we're all just here to have fun!

7. Three songs you didn’t expect to like but eventually loved

This is also partially due to the fact that I wasn't interested in Arcane for a while, but eventually I gave it a shot and man, I loved the show! Then the song itself grew on me, too 😊

This is one my husband listened to (its a fan song for Hazbin Hotel) and I thought it was creepy at first. But then the more I heard it, I thought it was kinda catchy and it grew on me even before I later watched the show

This started out as more of a joke because of one line in this song that when I first heard it I went, "Wait.......WHAT?!?! Did I hear that right??" It plays in a movie I saw called Dancin' It's On (which is one of those "it's so bad, it's funny" movies) and I didn't take the song seriously, but then when I looked it up later, I actually really liked it! It's catchy and it sounds similar to other songs I like. Ironically enough, it ended up being my #1 played song on my Spotify Wrapped for 2023 😅🤣 There are alternate lyrics for the one line that made me do a double take, but even then, the line itself is just funny. If you wanna know what it is...give it a listen and I'm sure you'll catch it 😉😉

This Two Steps From Hell song is incredibly gorgeous and I seriously think everyone should hear it!!

This one is super beautiful and has very uplifting and inspiring lyrics. Some of them are a little strange, but it's only a couple of them. I've been listening to this one for years and it helps me a lot 💜

I've posted things from Gentri before and this song is my absolute FAVORITE of theirs! Very incredible melody and orchestral sound and the lyrics are also amazing and inspiring! This one gives me a lot of hope and love for life!

This is my #1 go to when I'm sad because it's just impossible to be sad when listening to this. It just sounds like home to me 💜 even my husband knows playing this song when I'm sad or upset will help me and he'll play it for me often 🥰

I'm not a big fan of Firefly so far story-wise which is disappointing, because I love her design. Her personality is very innocent and cute, written to be sympathized with and to maximize moe value, dashed with an obligatory tragic backstory to make you go "awww". because I had seen speculations/headcanons before Penacony was released that firefly may be controlling Sam’s robo-suit, I was expecting firefly to reveal her true colors/motivation that was less “Omg I’m sorry I lied I can’t tell you everything rn but I am not totally innocent :(” and more “I like you and wish we didn’t have to be enemies but I’m going to use you before anyone else can. Sorry, but also not sorry.” (it’s still early, there are definitely more acts to the story, so I haven’t marked this possibility out yet).

but at least for the first part of the main story, the purpose for firefly is just cannon emotional fodder. Later, if she comes back, any further role she plays will probably be cheapened from this lackluster introduction. Unless she has some master plan under wraps and her cute and innocent persona was all/mostly a guise…

I do like some of the moments and cut scenes we had with firefly around Golden Hour and firefly’s dialogue about the struggles with her illness and how Penacony is an escape for her. I just wished the writers leaned more on two strangers who get caught in an adventure filled with hijinks across one of the liveliest places in the cosmos rather than playing too hard into the Lies and Truths and Who Can I Trust Here? game since I felt that that was already established with the representatives of the other factions. MC and firefly going back and forth shouldn’t have been included, maybe, or firefly could’ve been upfront and more flippant—up the ante on firefly’s admiration for the Nameless, since they also represent the freedom firefly lacks due to her condition. That would give her the trust and motivation to show MC around and take her to her secret hideout, and tbh for me MC is spacey and casual enough to go along with it. Firefly MAY be dangerous, but MC is gonna take a chance and trust her bc s/he is having fun and we’re in Penacony and on vacation and everything is so cool! And we don’t have any reason to doubt her, and it’s not like we’re divulging any secrets to her, so what’s the harm in getting to know her? I don’t think this is the first time MC blindly trusted someone either, and it’s believable for me, considering MC has “child-like innocence” (that or is sensitive to memoria or both).

Firefly could totally be honest later that she’s also looking for the Watchmaker’s Legacy, but keep the line that she doesn’t wish us to be enemies. lessen her gratitude that we “saved” her from being caught as a stowaway. Ngl I blanked out a bit during that scene, but to me it was less us and more the fact that Gallagher showed up at the right time to tell the NPCs off, so any following gushing from Firefly about how kind and helpful MC was rubbed me the wrong way (which is why I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop because I was like, this girl can’t be for real). I think we should’ve avoided that whole interaction and met Firefly in a more neutral way, and then overhear that security team is looking for a silver-haired girl (I know it was silver-haired boy in the original dialogue, which is interesting, I expected some sort of reveal with that but it hasn’t come up yet) as a stowaway, or drop other hints in our interactions w/ firefly that don’t add up rather than having Sampo/Sparkle tell us she’s suspicious to our face. but maybe we don’t connect the dots until we’re on the rooftop where firefly is like, yeah I am. (Thus skipping all the lying and apologies and whatever.)

One other nitpick: stop having other strangers in-game ship MC with people they’ve just met. there can be chemistry from first meetings, but it sure as heck isn’t going to come from Bystander 1 and 2 going “oh my god you two aren’t a couple?” or “so sorry to interrupt your date?” and “she’s such a lovely and pretty young girl, you’re so lucky!” it’s just the writers telling the player that “aww aren’t you two cute? Now kiss.” *smushes two barbies together* let it develop more naturally… or at least just have the one-off line, instead of dropping the hints 3 (I don’t remember the exact number) times. like, I’m not against this mistaken-as-a-couple trope at all (I love when it’s used right), but in this instance it just feels like another emotional shortcut for the player to feel invested in firefly. It probably works for some, but it just doesn’t for me, because I know it’s not going to go anywhere. and for good reason, because it doesn’t fit in the story. I hesitate to call it fan service. It might be? Or was it supposed to be funny? Or just to show firefly’s shy/bashful side. The last one is probably it.

anyway this is just my opinion as I casually went thru the main story. I’m not a dedicated plot/lore enthusiast so I may have missed some important points but these are just my thoughts. Mostly disappointed they pulled another Teppei with firefly, although firefly is way more preferable to the shoehorn that was Teppei 💀 I just think a couple of minor tweaks could've made Firefly a more likeable character.

Update: finished the last part of the main story where Firefly is killed. I liked the cut scene, but I think we should've had the build-up tension where we uncover Firefly's tracks earlier?? Like I get that we're supposed to have the shock of a sudden death but since we had no real connection to Firefly it was very eh for me. I think that since we were going to backtrack anyway, we could switch POVs for a second to walk around as Firefly in a series of disjointed scenes and then re-converge as MC right before they meet. Dunno though tbh.

Now, when Aventurine leads us to Robyn's corpse, that was epic.

💞 Who's your comfort character?

You know, it's probably still Thomas Magnum or Jonathan Black. I find very, very little in the fandoms that I enjoy for either one of them, but they're still my favorites. There's something I find weirdly relateable about them, despite having next to nothing in common with them, except like one or two superficial things (like snark). Buck from 9-1-1 is another, but specificially the bond between him and Bobby (because we adopt EVERYONE in my family, so I find it comforting to find it in shows I like)

🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?

Just to piggy back off the previous answer - Thomas Magnum and Jonathan Black and actually, Steven from Haunting of Hill House. I have like a 20k half written fic that in a PLOT TWIST I have decided to write like 99% of it before posting it because I don't want it to just whither and die like I've done with a few of my longer stories that I just don't know how to end. For Steven, I know like 90% of the fandom hates him, but I think it's because they AREN'T him, and I come from a long distinguished line of severely mentally ill or addict family members, and I know what it's like to be the only sober/sane one in the family and be judged for it.

When Found Family is no longer "implied" but blatantly said. The entire episode of Blood Brothers for Magnum, "In Another Life" for 9-1-1, like anything in the Star Trek fandom.....::le sigh:: Yesssss...allll the Found Family Acknowledgement

🎢 Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

Straight tie between Lucifer fandom "Damnatio Memoriae" and Agents of SHIELD "Running Up That Hill", because NO ONE WAS MORE SURPRISED THAN ME about how they turned out. I was a 100% pants writer for both of them, and I am a little annoyed that I can't seem to manage the same (I think) quality when I plan things out. I had literally no idea what I was doing with either one of them, other than I was annoyed at canon/show canon at the time and I was like "I'LL FIX YOU, MF" and then spite-wrote like 100-200k words fueled by rage at dropped story lines and half assed character arcs.

The princess and the merman. (Sybil x Abela fairytale AU)

Once there was a prince of the sea who had been lost since he was little. His memories carried the voices of family, grown distant through time, and the glow of light from above.

2. Knightly Memoria (Janlenoux x Adelphel amnesia AU. With the help of Sybil, the two live in Gridania and work for Sybil under fake identities as members of his squadrons. Jan loses his memories after an accident.)

Sybil paced the edges of a newly formed hole in Issom-Har. From above, a remainder of last night's rain dropped from a leaf to slip under his collar.

3. Knightly Memoria 2.0 (Janlenoux x Adelphel. Role reversal amnesia AU. This time Adelphel is the one to lose his memory while out helping Abela in "The Hundred Throes".)

Steel clashed against steel, two daggers against a single broad sword and a shield. Janlenoux spun as he came in with his shield to block a rather well done but slow strike of one of Meuliaire's blades.

4. Blood Dripped Rose (Another victim, devoid of blood. A single card decorated with the stamp of a blood dripped rose. "I'm Sorry." Written in shaken handwritting. {Vampire Florentel/Detective Sorrel AU})

The Jeweled Crozier, ever bustling with life regardless of anything happening elsewhere in Ishgard. Merchants called out to get the attention of possible customers. Tableware, blankets, easy to store foods. Each stall housed unique wares to fit anyone's needs. People haggling filled the air and children ran between one person and another.

5. Beneath the Stars (Prophet Florentel and disgraced hero Sorrel AU)

Fire rained down upon stone and soil, smoke filling the air and choking it. Even the moon hid from the sight below. Lingering monsters prowled the destroyed town, feeding upon inhabitants that had not made it out. Silence followed the sounds of despair, deafening in the night. Yet it was that silence, a bubble around the town, that soon was heard the slow treading of footsteps. The ringing bell of boots, purposeful in making, splitting the air.

6. Wilted Wings (Angst AU Florentel x Sorrel. Literally made this AU for the pain. At least they will get a happy ending... eventually. Can't say the same for Aruktai and Otome in this one though.)

Kazeninotte had stayed behind, lingering as the other void users slowly began to trickle out after their moment with Sorrel. A warm smile tilted her lips as she listened to Zeneroseus complain about the energy used up and his immediate deserving of a nice nap. She didn't argue. He did deserve it.

7. Free Wings (Fluff AU Florentel x Sorrel. Takes place in WoL Sybil's timeline where Florentel (My actual shard of Azem) actually did die at birth and thus was reborn after the events of MSQ where peace mostly exists... and falls in love with Sybil's son, Sorrel. Beginning starts during an Ishgardian Ball.)

If there was one thing he wanted to be doing, it was not this. Over the heads of those gathered, stunning blue took on a veiled mask. It wasn't that he did not like these kinds of things. It was that he attracted the wrong kind of attention during them.

This is where I run out of currently active or finished AUs and I don't remember posting order of my drabbles... so you get drabbles at random from here out.

8. Scars (How my half blind Miqo bard, Mikh'to, got his face scars. Song is "My Ladies Eyes" from the 'The Last Herald-Mage' book series by Mercedes Lackey. My favorite books.)

"The days may speed, and then, I heartward hie, I flee, I fly, To see her eyes again." Mikh'to sang to the sounds of his harp, each word between a pluck of strings. Around him tavern dwellers drank and cheered to one of his most requested songs.

9. Unnamed (Janlenoux had a dream of when he got his eye scar.)

Janlenoux sighed as he leaned back into his pillows, which he had propped up against the wall at the head of the bed. As comfortable as he was, he still didn't like how he was made to rest for a few days. Reaching a hand up, he hovered it over his bandaged eye but refused to touch the still fresh wound.

10. Unnamed (Pasithea, as her Ancient self, while working on a project... a flower whose spores strengthen the gift of soul sight. It.. uh.. fails.)

Bright, curious eyes peered at the oddly shaped, large flower. "Oh, I think I shall have to rework the size. Perhaps remove the sporehead and settle for a more elegant, petal design too. I have created something much too unsightly."

The Things You Find on Tatooine

I technically posted the first part of this story series in 2021, but I'm counting it again this year, because I wrote most of it in 2022.

What started as something of a rare pair dare—haha, Chewie/Mara, what an absurd off-the-wall pairing, but! what if I figured out a way to make it work?—became a series of ficlets that I wrote on whenever inspiration struck. It became something of a comfort fic whenever things were a bit much—and things were a bit much a lot this year. 

I’ve capped the series at 10 chapters. Next year I’ll be writing the next stage of the story: the New Hope remix, currently titled A Smuggler’s Guide to Joining the Rebel Alliance. I can’t wait to throw Luke and Leia into this nonsense.

The inevitable punchline of Things on Tatooine is going to be that Chewie and Mara were never romantically or sexually involved, but only faked the relationship to make her feel safe (and to torture Han). But jediMordsith egged me on until I wrote the explicit version. I honestly can’t believe I did it! As I said in notes to the fic: one day you start cracking jokes on the group chat about Chewabacca's fuckability, and the next thing you know you've written 2k of Wookiee smut.

This idea probably came from thinking too much about how to bring Luke into Things on Tatooine (not like this!) An AU of one of my own AUs (how indulgent!) My most popular fic of the year, no question, currently at 1287 hits.

I talked a bit about the genesis for this fic in the notes. Thrawn isn’t my favorite character, and I mainly write him for evilmouse and jediMordsith’s amusement. I struggled with this series of stories and I’m not really sure I did them justice. I had the most fun with the final story in the Emperor’s lair, which sets up a few things for the final Triumvirate story. 

GOALS FOR 2023:

Triumvirate Finale! (explicit, very) The big finale of the Triumvirate series, in which the trio returns to Coruscant to face the Emperor. Doesn't have a proper title yet. Progress so far: two and a half chapters drafted, 15,410 words.

A Smuggler's Guide to Joining the Rebellion (gen) The sequel to Things on Tatooine. Progress: A few half-drafted scenes, 1,673 words.

Echo, Revenant, Targeter, Phoenix (gen) A character study of Winter Retrac. I'm thinking of submitting this one for the Star Wars Big Bang. Progress: three chapters drafted, some major restructuring needed, 7,271 words.

Lando Calrissian and the Jewel of Andara (gen) The Lando and Mara heist romcom I've been promising forever. Progress: three chapters drafted, in need of heavy revision, 6757 words.

1. Discordia by Kristyn Merbeth - Scorpia is finally back among the stars, far away from the memories of the war she and her family started—and ended—on Nibiru.
