It has vampires, old aesthetic... a fucking piece of shit protagonist.

But all it managed is making me wanting to write my own version of a vampire court, which I will manage to add into Birds of a Rose.

And I want to make an OC and let him fuck up Versailles.

Vampyria (first cycle) - Victor Dixen

I discovered Victor Dixen's work through his saga "Phobos" a few years ago. I liked it then but didn't follow his work until now. Going through the fantasy section of my trustworthy local bookshop, I fell upon the first three books of his new series: Vampyria.

I was curious, looking for good french authors, to see if there were writers that would suit my taste.

Once again, Dixen didn't disappoint me: he surpassed my expectations. And now I'm stuck while waiting for the new cycle of the series, so I will talk to you about the first one.

🩸 So what is Vampyria? 🩸

Have you ever imagined how the world would have been if supernatural, magic, and creatures existed? Vampyria did.

You are immersed into a dark world, stuck for 300 years in the 16th century. Louis XIV (yes, the Sun King himself), was turned into a vampire on the verge of death and decided to rule the entire world, and reshape society, nobility, and religion.

The world, now called "Magna Vampyria", is oppressing humans, who pay the tithe by donating blood. They live in the fear of the night, now unable to leave their village due to the enclosing law. Every member of the high nobility was turned into a vampire and is the one who receives the blood of the humans as well as the new church. You follow the adventures of Jeanne, a young grey-haired woman, who wants to kill the king after the assassination of her parents. And I can safely say, that she takes all the necessary measures to try to achieve her goal.

If you love fantasy, with a little bit of romance, a lot of drama, and vampires, you'll surely like these books.

🩸 My own, totally not vampiric, review 🩸

I didn't expect to like it at first. It took me a few pages to enter into the story, but it's always like this when I read Dixen's books. I'm not into vampires and was never truly a fan of them. But (and that's a big but), this series might have changed my mind about vampire literature.

This series works with "cycles" of books, and a cycle is the story told through the eyes of one character.

Even though the vampires are supposed to be enemies, I fell in love with the way they were described. They have their own rules as a society, with their codes, and their traditions... reading this book was like seeing a twisted version of the french court that we know and I loved it. More generally, it's like seeing a twisted version of french history, with the shadow of the Revolution behind every sentence.

I think that Dixen is doing a great job at piquing the interest of the reader. The more you advance the story, the more the plot thickens. His characters are all different, with their own mindsets and personalities and I always love to see a cast of characters that are not all lookalikes.

And, oh my god, the end (that serves as an introduction for the next cycle) is absolutely wonderful. It took me so off-guard that I had to reread it because I was too baffled to just go on.

So if you like vampires, history, and pirates (yes, pirates) you must give these books a shot.

🩸 Do I recommend these books? 🩸

Victor Dixen's style can be a hit or miss depending on the person. But for me, it was a massive hit, especially due to the world-building and the thrill of adventure and danger.

So, if you know Dixen's work: go ahead and have fun I recommend it. If you don't know Dixen's work: if you love fantasy and adventures you should totally give it a shot!

Salut #booksta ! 🧡 L'un des défis des abonnés, lancé par @manon.lfbvre , constituait à "un livre avec des étoiles sur la couverture". Et pour le coup, j'ai choisi cette édition de "Phobos" de Victor Dixen, publiée chez @collectionr 😊

➡️ Quel roman auriez-vous choisi pour ce défi ?

// Depuis le rachat de la NASA, un programme télévisé révolutionnaire est sur le point d'être diffusé : Genesis. Six prétendantes et six prétendants, venus des quatre coins du monde, se retrouvent dans le plus grand speed-dating jamais organisé. La première tentative de colonisation de Mars au travers d'une émission de téléréalité. //

Wow, que dire ! Encore une fois, j'ai été grandement surprise par la tournure des évènements. En commençant ce roman, j'étais loin d'imaginer me retrouver dans une corruption à si grande échelle, condamnant douze êtres humains à un funeste destin dans le seul but de se remplir les poches. Dès les premières pages, nous apprenons que nos candidats sont condamnés à une mort inéluctable.

Ainsi, nous suivions différents protagonistes : les organisateurs du programme Genesis dans leur ascension aux pouvoirs, les douze candidats à bord du vaisseau Cupido et Andrew, le fils d'un défunt organisateur, qui met son nez là où il ne devrait pas...

J'ai vraiment apprécié cette lecture qui s'alterne sous différents angles : champ, contrechamp, hors-champs, chaîne Genesis. C'est assez original et on se retrouve avec une vision d'ensemble.

Petite déception cela dit à bord du Cupido : tout se concentre sur Léonor, la protagoniste principale (je suppose?). Nous avons que peu d'informations sur le speed-dating des autres candidates et aucun point de vue chez les prétendants. Néanmoins, je conçois que ce soit difficile de tout mettre dans un seul roman.

En tout cas, je n'ai pas mis longtemps à me commander le tome 2 ! D'ailleurs, les fans seront en joie puisqu'une adaptation de Phobos est prévue. 😉

Vampyria - Der Hof der Finsternis

Ich habe das Buch im Urlaub gelesen und innerhalb von 4 Tagen verschlungen - was schonmal was heißt, weil ich sonst eigentlich eine sehr langsame Leserin bin. Es hat mich wirklich gecatcht und es lohnt sich auf alle Fälle, einen Blick darauf zu werfen.

Eignet sich super, wenn man zwischen den Kaps auch mal längere Pausen machen muss oder immer nur Zeit für ca. 20 Seiten am Tag hat. Die Kaps sind in sich geschlossen und eher kurz.

Highlights:

Das Story Pacing ist wirklich angenehm! Man ist von Beginn an schnell in der Handlung und es entsteht an keiner Stelle im Buch das Gefühl von Langatmigkeit. Schreibstil und Story sind insgesamt sehr zugänglich und angenehm zu lesen.

Die Art und Weise wie Vampire dargestellt werden - nämlich tatsächlich brutal und unmenschlich. Das war wirklich erfrischend. In den meisten Vampirtexten wird die vampirische Natur meiner Meinung nach sehr verharmlost dargestellt.

Kleine Randideen wie bspw. gezüchtete vampirische Pflanzen.

Orfeo und Naoko - beides sehr interessante Nebencharaktere mit einer (tatsächlich) schockierenden und tragischen Backstory. Ich bin bei beiden gespannt, wo sich die Reise in den nächsten Büchern hin entwickeln wird.

Szenen und Ideen wie z.B. der Sonnenkönig in einem goldenen Morgenmantel als Vampir mit einer Sonnenmaske.

Die Love Story im Buch, die 1. bis zur Hälfte des Buches noch relativ unklar ist und 2. am Ende einen Twist hat, der mich echt überrascht hat.

Lowlights:

Der Hauptcharakter ist 17, verhält sich aber wesentlich älter. Ich habe grundsätzlich kein Problem damit, dass der Main Character so jung ist, genieße es aber doch mittlerweile, wenn nicht immer alles "Teenie Stories" sind.

An manchen Stellen wirkt der Hauptcharakter sehr emotionslos, gerade wenn wirklich schlimme Dinge passieren, bei dem jeder normale Mensch deutlich heftiger reagiert hätte - das tut der Story allerdings nur wenig Abbruch und ist eher ein kleinerer Kritikpunkt.

Der Plot und das Hauptmotiv sind eher plakativ und relativ vorhersehbar. Vampire in Versailles hat mich total gecatcht, leider geht es aber wenig um das Vampirleben in Versailles, sondern mehr um eine Art royale Akademie für angehende Vampire. Was auch seinen Charme hat. Aber ich hätte mir doch mehr Versailles erhofft (vielleicht in Band 2 & 3?).

Fazit:

Lohnt sich auf jeden Fall zu lesen und ist angenehm geschrieben! Ich habe auch wirklich Lust auf den Rest der Reihe. Reißt einen jetzt nicht kollosal vom Hocker, aber ist trotzdem eine angenehme Geschichte mit einigen unerwarteten und erfrischenden Ideen.

My passion in life is making series of pics showing the evolution of a character over time (from top left to bottom right).

Her name is Nalia (because I wanted a name that started with N and forgot to think of one until I was literally finishing character creation) and she's an Imperial who grew up in a convent/monastery (I haven't decided to which god yet). She wasn't a particularly good pupil, mostly because she simply never believed in the Imperial pantheons, but she at least learned how to read (she likes books and stacks her collected library on Cosades' side table), write, calculate, and convince people to make rather generous donations to the congregation when they were passing through the area.

Her highest stat is luck, followed closely by charisma. You know how people always complain that everyone insults them at the start of Morrowind ? She never encountered that problem. Charmd, seduces (she's aromantic and therefore immune to her own tricks) or stab (with a spear or long sword) her way through problems. Not precisely nice but she has her own moral code to which she is rather strongly attached, and it happens to include not letting stupid people getting mauled by dangerous fauna on the side of the road.

She wears a long skirt, because I think there aren't enough fantasy characters doing that, and also because she grew up in a nunnery and some habits are harder to shake than others. Probably, she got arrested for punching a guard, but who knows.

She is NOT Nerevar reborn (according to her, at least, but who knows), just she is sufficiently similar that a version of him might very well be whispering in her ears eventually. She likes rats but still kills them with no second thoughts when out on the roads.

mini hiatus pour les holidayz, en vrai je pense que je me remettrais à grapher courant semaine du 24 parce que je serais en VACANCES (il faut savoir que j'ai eu que 2 semaines de vacances cette année), mais je perds un peu l'inspiration ces derniers temps. j'essaierais de répondre aux commandes, mais si vous ne me voyez pas le faire c'est que je n'étais pas super inspirée, sorry it happens ! positivement je me suis mise au tricot. je vous conseille tous de vous y mettre, c'est très relaxant. et j'ai lu le premier tome de vampyria, de victor dixen, que je vous recommande. j'attends bien sûr que quelqu'un se décide de faire un rpg sur la cour des ténèbres. j'ai une liste longue comme trois pommiers de lecture à lire, et je rattraperais tout ça pendant mon break, mais si vous avez des suggestions de romance fantastique / historique, je prends volontiers. on a jamais assez de lecture à lire je pense.

Me, unsure if I enjoy Vampyria:

Vampyria casually having two pages of a menu that are so pretty

Me, already making two OCs, buying an exclusive pretty Edition: I have no choice now but like you.

But tbh its really really fun at times! The protagonist is just constantly "oh fuck oh shit" and a totally insufferable pos, I cant wait to see her fuck shit up.

Just love the lore so much and I really want to see what is up in Germany and Prussia... what are my beloved Wittelsbacher up to, Ludwig II would love this... build his hundreth castle, totally be a vampire.

Salut #booksta ! 🍄 C'est avec une pointe de tristesse que je termine cette première trilogie de Vampyria publiée à la @collectionr 😢 Bye bye Jeanne Froidelac ! Peut-être nous reverrons nous, ou pas ? Je vous laisserai le découvrir 😏

Indéniablement le meilleur tome de cette première trilogie, j'ai eu le souffle coupé à chacun de ces rebondissements, comme si les tempêtes de l'Ouranos me frappaient au visage. Je n'ai cessé d'être surprise face aux événements, surtout cette compétition. Je reste époustouflée par la manière dont l'auteur s'approprie des faits historiques et autres références pour les intégrer admirablement dans son univers.

Petit + pour les clins d'oeil à Phobos, le Tarot Interdit ou encore Jack l'Éventreur, ceux qui l'ont lu comprendront 😉

Les visions de Jeanne, alias Diane, sont beaucoup plus présentes dans ce tome-ci et trouvent tout leur sens. Un fondement détaillé, cohérent, et particulièrement fascinant. Ce personnage connaît d'ailleurs une véritable évolution, se trouvant elle-même parmi ces ténèbres.

C'est sur un énorme coup de coeur que je conclus les aventures de Jeanne Froidelac ! Et j'ai hâte découvrir celles de ce nouveau personnage 😏

Mais le plus beau dans tout ça, c'est quand un livre nous raconte une histoire au-delà de sa propre histoire. Car en plus d'être ma toute première dédicace de @victordixen , "La Cour des Ouragans", c'est avant tout ma première rencontre avec @la_bibliotheque_d_emilija qui, aujourd'hui, est devenue une amie. 🧡 Oui, je me permets une petite déclaration d'amitié 🤣

Hey should you want book recs: Vampyria by Victor Dixen. It’s about the Sun King getting turned into a vampire and establishing a vampire reign that covers whole Europe and America! The protagonist is an insufferable piece of thrash though (she doesn’t make sense so I am just pretending she is), but it’s so funny... because they live in like 2015 but are still stuck with gas lamps and horse drawn carriages. But god you will love the vampires there! There is one „good guy“ vampire but you read it and see just how fucked up he is, and they all are, it’s phenomenal! Also... it has Vampire horses (my fav), vampire roses and vampire swords.

Oh that sounds cool! I'm slowly ploughing my way through vampire and werewolf books I find at my library. I'll search for it next time I'm at the library!
