not that i need to add more fics to my never-ending list of ideas and wips, but  imagine an au where almost everything is the same, except for one major thing is different: mike is the one who vanishes, not will. 

particularly, i’m hyperfixating on the image of will biking as fast as he can away from the quarry and through the woods, and he doesn’t even know where he’s going except for away. and then, out of the blue, he hears someone call his name, “will! will! will!” 

and will freezes, because he knows that voice, and it’s impossible because he just saw them pull his best friend’s body out of the quarry waters. but there’s no denying it, especially when the voice continues to call his name. 

so what does will do? he shouts mike’s name back, over and over again, and he knows mike is there, that he’s alive, but he has no idea where mike is or why he can hear him but not see him. and obviously, both of them are crying, because mike doesn’t know where he’s at and wants to get home, and will can’t even see mike, let alone help him

but then—

but then, the world around will shifts. suddenly, he’s in the same place, but it looks different, and suddenly, he can see mike too, having unwittingly tapped into his true sight abilities that let him see into the upside down. he and mike briefly reunite before they both hear the sound of a demogorgon’s growl, and mike tells will to run. 

both of them survive that ordeal and escape the demogorgon, and somehow or another, they get mike back from the upside down.

but little do they know that this simple moment, wherein will uses his powers to try and reach his best friend, just kicked off a series of events that will now make will the primary target of the monster who controls the upside down. mike’s kidnapping might have just been a matter of circumstance—wrong place, wrong time—but what comes next is anything but accidental.
