I like the new Avatar series. It’s a little disconcerting that they accelerated some plot lines and changed some things, and episode 4 definitely felt rushed, but that’s hardly surprising given the change in medium and the enormous amount of money it takes to produce something like this.

The cast is amazing, the scenery and costumes are fantastic, the CGI is pretty damn good, and I love that they brought in fan favs like the secret tunnel song and the cabbage man. They’d better get Toph right next season because her character is crucial, not just to further the plot but for disability representation and because Toph is freaking awesome and a total boss.

My son wants The Rock to play The Boulder, which would be pretty hilarious tbh. He’d probably love to do it, too. It’d be right up his alley since he was a professional wrestler.

I recognized A Martinez just by his voice before I even saw his face. I love that he’s in this and in Dark Winds, which is absolutely brilliant and I long for more seasons of that. For some reason his presence makes me feel less old, although you’d think it would be the opposite at this point.

“It has been my honor to work in support of these marvelous actors in the coming @/netflix live action re-boot of the beloved #avatarthelastairbender series. ❤️ From left, they are @/kiawentiio (brilliant in last year's @/beansthefilm) as #Katara, @/gordoncormier_official as #AvatarAang, and @/ianlousley as #Sokka. I play #MasterPakku, the legendary and foolishly inflexible waterbender. What our four characters have in common is the #WaterTribe. What the four of us as actors have in common is an appetite to take care of each other. Repeated moments of acknowledgement were the norm, and for me, Kiawentiio was a particularly fine ally during my most challenging day of performance. She offered smart suggestions that got me past strategic problems in the staging of the work. (And she did this twice...) In turn, as an elder, I demonstrated the wisdom of 'leading each other in' when the director asked one of us to take a second pass at a random line in a scene. (Without being asked, the other actors will say the line or lines before the one in question, to 'lead their partner in.' That way, the camera always finds us listening before we speak, and in listening, we access an extra measure of grace.)

For its fun and its moments of tender sadness –– and for the lovely qualities it chooses to exalt –– this story is a great gift. Can't wait to share it with everyone, sometime in 2023.
