Call it a dynasty: In Eras Tour of own, Chiefs rally to win 3rd Super Bowl in 5 years
Tumblr media
In a small side room at the Chiefs’ team hotel on Tuesday, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt considered the question of how this period in the team’s history might be perceived a generation or two from now.
Even with the franchise about to play in its fourth Super Bowl in five years while seeking to become the first team to repeat in nearly two decades, Hunt prefaced his response by saying “I certainly hope it doesn’t end any time soon.”
“I think how you end up labeling this era of Chiefs football is really for an outside observer,” he continued, smiling and adding, “It’s not for me to say what it was, to label it with the ‘D’ word.”
While how long it goes remains to be seen, any lingering debate or quibbling about whether this remarkable time constitutes the “D” word — dynasty — were quelled on Sunday night at Allegiant Stadium when the Chiefs outlasted the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in just the second Super Bowl to go to overtime.
The Chiefs prevailed on Patrick Mahomes’ 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman, establishing another landmark in the Chiefs’ very own Eras Tour.
Emblematic of a regular season that often was a grind and at times made the Chiefs appear vulnerable and splintering, they fell into a 10-0 first-half deficit that featured more airing of grievances in Travis Kelce’s appalling and berserk dash into Chiefs coach Andy Reid.
Also mirroring the season, though, they reset and rallied courtesy of the defense that never rested and four field goals by Harrison Butker — including a Super Bowl record 57-yarder and a 29-yarder with 3 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
And with the considerable help of a stupefying special teams blunder by the 49ers that set up the Chiefs’ vital first touchdown on a pass from Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling — the picture of redemption this postseason after a dud regular season.
While perhaps none of this recent run could eclipse the sheer thrill of winning Super Bowl LIV after a 50-year drought, the real triumph has been all they’ve achieved since … and it would be hard to top how it went Sunday.
As the air has gotten thinner and thinner on the way to the top in a league predicated on creating parity, the Chiefs fended off so many factors — including their own issues — to achieve something seldom seen in the annals of pro football history.
Whatever else is to come, the victory cemented an enduring legacy for the Chiefs and particularly Reid and Mahomes — the man who altered the very meaning of what it is to be a Chiefs fan and even the self-image of Kansas Citians.
With a third Super Bowl victory to his name, Reid now trails only Bill Belichick (six) and Chuck Noll (four) and is on trajectory toward becoming the winningest overall coach in league history should he continue to coach for another five or six seasons.
With Mahomes’ third Super Bowl title, he now is 15-3 in postseason play and in Super Bowl wins trails only Tom Brady (seven) and Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw with four apiece.
At age 28.
If that speaks to the abundant future possibilities with Mahomes, the victory also embodied the rich intersection of the Chiefs’ past and present. Because it reiterated the momentous place in the pro football world of the Hunt family, starting with Chiefs and AFL founder Lamar Hunt, who died in 2006, and Norma Hunt, who died last summer.
In the first Super Bowl ever played without the regal “First Lady of Football,” the Chiefs punctuated a season of wearing a patch honoring her with an exclamation point paying further tribute.
The game and season also will be remembered for the glitz and glamor of the Taylor Swift Effect: The worldwide pop icon’s rabidly followed relationship with Kelce has had a multiplier effect on the popularity of the NFL itself but also on the Chiefs’ ambitions to become “the world’s team.”
(As if the Swift-Kelce dynamic hadn’t been phenomenon enough, having one of the most popular performers on Earth fly here between concert dates in Japan and Australia to attend one of the most-watched events in the history of the planet makes for a mind-blowing impact that could take years to fully comprehend.)
And that world’s team campaign surely was enhanced by winning their third Super Bowl in five years to give them four overall — two fewer than New England and Pittsburgh’s record six and one behind Dallas and San Francisco’s five.
But something else distinguished the meaning of this win.
Not just the result but the journey.
Not the glitz but the grit, perhaps captured in a snapshot of a chunk of Mahomes’ helmet being knocked off in the 30-below windchill of the playoff opener against Miami. T
his has been not so much about the spectacular scenes that have so defined the Mahomes Era but the resolute and methodical moments from a simplified offense and the anchoring of a stellar defense that paved the way and enabled all this. In this four-year cycle, as general manager Brett Veach put it last week, “everything has just kind of flipped itself.”
With a laugh, he thought of the contrast between previously just hoping the defense could get the opponent “to punt once” to give the Chiefs a chance to feeling that if the offense can just score once “we’re good.”
While the offense reset from an epidemic of dropped passes and pivotal offensive penalties and other issues, that came only after it pushed off bottom after the Christmas Day debacle against the Raiders.
The hideous 20-14 loss was marked by disorganization and sideline dissension, including the bizarre spectacle of Reid turning his back to the start of an offensive drive to block the return of Kelce’s helmet to him after Kelce had spiked it. To that point the Chiefs were an aimless 9-6, and nothing was assured — even a playoff berth.
“It’s almost like because of the (past) success, there’s that mindset (that) this team might be just fast-forwarding to the playoffs,” Veach said. “But it’s so hard to do, you can’t do that. And (if) you do that, you might not end up making the playoffs.”
So that Raiders game, Veach said, made for a “come-to-truth moment” that may not have been as effective if the Chiefs had snuck in a win and been lulled into thinking everything was fine.
The Star’s Sam McDowell diagnosed the turning point last week:
The coaches met alone first, without any players, and decided to “make things easier for the players schematically,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said. So coaches shortened play calls to reduce the lengthy and complicated verbiage, reduced substitution patterns and made a concerted effort to get plays into Mahomes’ headset more promptly.
The decluttering helped diminish crucial pre-snap mistakes and clarify assignments, making for far crisper offense.
But the Chiefs have continued to play a more complementary style to take advantage of the breakthrough defense — traits that proved essential on the way to the monumental win on Sunday that stands for something more.
“Each one is more satisfying than the last,” Veach said the other day.
He was speaking of just getting to the Super Bowl, but the same doubtless applies to winning it.
So the Chiefs will revel in this for days, including at the parade on Wednesday. But soon they will be looking toward the future and another tier of possibility. No team ever has won three straight Super Bowls.
That in itself will be a fresh challenge, and the Chiefs will have to contend with some offseason question marks before they embark:
Will they be able to sign Chris Jones to a long-term deal after being unable to last offseason?
What if Travis Kelce were to retire — a prospect he has hinted at considering only to later walk back?
And might Reid, now 65, be pondering that despite the Chiefs’ brain trust saying they expect him to stay for years longer?
But that’s all for another day while we try to process and appreciate this momentous feat — all the more incredible considering the half-century of futility before.
Asked the other day if he ever steps back and thinks to himself how this all happened, Hunt immediately pointed to the hiring of Reid after the 2012 season as the day it all started to change.
Optimistic as he was then, he smiled and added, “I would be lying if I told you that (I thought) we would have this level of sustained success with him.”
Sustained enough already to call it the “D word” — a term that may need amplifying in the years to come.

Quarter-Finalists
18 Months Earlier
“Welcome back, poke trainers and fans to the quarter finals of the Hoenn Pokémon League championship!” The announcer’s voice rang through the massive stadium. “We’re in the fifth match of the quarter finals between Johto newcomer Chandler Roget and Sinnoh ace Amanda Cantwell! Both trainers are now down to their last pokémon, which means this next round is going to determine which of them advances to the semi-finals!”
Dressed in a black jacket and pants, Chandler sprayed some potion on his flygon’s back and rubbed it in between the dragon-type’s wings, watching the clock counting down the seconds before he’d have to send Bugsy back into the field.
On the opposite end of the field, the green-haired woman in a formfitting orange bodysuit stood with her arms crossed over her chest. In front of her was the towering form of a gyrados. Fresh from the ball, the woman’s last pokémon hadn’t seen any action yet, while Bugsy had taken licks in a bought with her kadabra and tropius in the previous rounds.
“You still got this, Bugsy,” he said, doing his best not to let concern slip into his voice. He’d seen the other trainer tear through her qualifiers and knew they were the clear underdogs in this matchup. That Bugsy had managed to take down two of her pokémon after she’d knocked out the rest of Chandler’s team was already a miracle, but he would be damned if he and Bugsy didn’t push for the day’s biggest upset. “That gyrados is a beast, but you’ve got the air on your side. You just got to wait for the right moment to knock that oversized sausage flat on its back.”
“Fly!” Bugsy replied affirmatively.
The signal bell rang and both pokémon entered the field, Bugsy taking off into the air and the large gyrados slithering into the multi-environment arena’s pool of water.
“Staying in the air isn’t going to save you!” Ace Trainer Jessica shouted. “Gyrados, use hurricane!”
The serpent spread its fins and spun with tremendous speed that seemed to defy its enormous bulk, filling the arena with furious gusts of wind. Bugsy was no stranger to inclement weather, but even he had difficulty navigating the gale force winds and Chandler worried about how well the flygon could hear him over the roar.
“Bugsy, use screech!” Chandler shouted at the top of his lungs.
After a tense pause with nothing but the sound of the wind filling his ears, there came a sharp pitched cry that pierced the noise of the hurricane force winds thrashing the interior of the arena.
“Oh! A screech from Chandler’s Bugsy has pierced through the sound of Gyrados’s hurricane!” The announcer’s voice boomed over the stadium’s speakers. “I hope everyone in the audience had their ear plugs on for that one!”
The winds dissipated, and there was gyrados, shaking its head and recoiling in pain, undoubtedly wishing it had arms to cover its ears about now.
I can’t let this drag on, Chandler thought. Bugsy was tired and the gyrados would certainly outlast the flygon in a battle of attrition. They had to go for a swift knockout punch.
“Bugsy, while it’s guard’s down, use Dragon Rush!”
Energy crackled around the flygon and it dove down on the gyrados at startling speed.
“Dragon Tail, Gyrados!”
The gyrados’s tail glowed with a similar energy as what was currently surrounding Bugsy and swung it around to meet the flygon head on.
“This may settle the match!” The announcer cried.
CRACK-BOOM!
Bugsy collided with the gyrados’s glowing tail in an explosion of brilliant light so intense that Chandler had to shield his eyes. When he removed his eyes, he saw Bugsy sailing back, struck hard in the chest by the gyrados’s tail. The gyrados’s tail was badly scorched from the collision and probably wouldn’t be seeing any more action this match, but that still left its head, which was more than enough.
“Gyrados, use ice beam!” Gyrados opened its tremendous jaws and fire a massive blue beam in the direction of the disoriented flygon.
No! “Dodge it!”
Bugsy snapped his wings back, stopping mid-air and preparing to dart up out of the path of the beam, but it was too late. The attack struck Bugsy straight in the chest and he lost all control over his flight as the frigid beam.
“Fllllyyyyyy!”
Bugsy crashed to the ground on Chandler’s side of the arena, his torso and right half of his body – including one wing- encased in ice. His left arm clawed weakly at the ice but was hardly making a scratch.
“Bugsy…” Chandler whispered in disbelief. “No.”
“Trainer Chandler’s Flygon is brought down by a surprise ice beam from Trainer Amanda’s gyrados!” The announcer said, clearly reveling in the thrill of being a spectator to this event. “Can Chandler’s flygon pull out of this?”
Chandler’s opponent wasn’t going to wait to find out.
“Let’s finish this, gyrados!” The gyrados exited the pool of water and stalked towards its foe.
“No! That’s enough!” Chandler leapt from the trainer’s box and sprinted across the battlefield.
“What’s this?” The announced cried. “Trainer Chandler has entered the field, thereby forfeiting the match! Trainer Amanda Cantwell advances to the semi-finals!”
The crowd that must have numbered in the tens of thousands erupted in rapturous applause, but it was nothing but a dull moan in the back of Chandler’s mind. All he saw and heard right now was Bugsy.  “Hold on, Bugsy!” Chandler shouted. “I’m coming!”
The flygon strained its neck to look at his trainer, letting out a mournful cry. Beneath its translucent red eye shields, its eyes were filled with pain and regret. It knew its trainer entering the field meant the match and everything they had trained for up until this point had come to an end.
“It’s okay,” Chandler said. He took his jacket off and began rubbing it up and down against the ice that had collected over his pokémon’s body, trying to remove as much as possible. “You did great.  You were more than great.”
Across the field he could see a team of pokémon nurses and their chanseys making their way towards them. Soon they’d be transporting Bugsy to the Pokemon infirmary where they’d patch him up quick as could be, but he didn’t intend to leave the dragon’s side until he was safely in the Pokécenter.
“Fly…” Some emotions transcended species, and the disappointment in his pokémon’s voice was unmistakable.
“I know… I know…” Chandler wrapped his arms around Bugsy’s neck and pulled the dragon’s head to his chest. “Next time we’ll go all the way.”
Chandler didn’t even notice the hot tears streaming down his cheeks.
Next time.

Injustice: All-In
Nine years ago, sudden upheaval fractured a world into three paths: us, the One Earth Regime enforced with a hand of steel and laser lobotomies, and the fairytale world where nothing too bad ever seems to happen, where villain plots occur just to get foiled. Sounds nice.
Superman did kill Lois Lane and their unborn child through the Joker’s machinations. He then murdered the Joker. Nothing went nuclear here—at least, not physically. Superman... shattered. He vanished.
We know he’s still alive: a silhouette waiting on rooftops for Batman, a silent shape hovering below a balcony for Wonder Woman. He’s fast and he’s elusive, but there are cameras everywhere—not that we put more up. The Initiative isn’t the regime.
Emergency protocols kept the Justice League functional until we put out the worst fires. On the face of it, two deaths probably shouldn’t have led to the League’s dissolution, but those two in that way applied pressure to existing fault lines in the League.
Other teams took up more of the burden, and some of the weight killed—dissolved—them. New ones form pretty regularly, but the heart has gone out of a lot of heroes. Waller runs the Suicide Squad ragged in a reactionary response to an unmoored and untrackable Superman. Heh. Despite her paranoia, her digital security is—lacking.
The Birds of Prey and Teen Titans didn’t fold under the pressure. Not like the others. We’ve mobilized to assist Batman (and Wonder Woman) in a move that neither of those other paths took: alleviating crime through lifting people up rather than pinning them down. With the loss of the League and the disappearance of one of its three big three pillars, Batman and Wonder Woman founded the All Initiative, which was briefly the One Earth Initiative before a chance encounter with a J’onn from another dimension.
The Initiative isn’t powered by threats, or actual violence. Not usually—we are talking about Batman. But we have information and money. Diana and her side have political weight and the personality to make sure those get put to use where they’re needed most.
We’re revitalizing Gotham, Metropolis, Atlantis, entire societies—mental and physical health support, Universal Basic Income... Arkham has renovated and expanded into out-patient services, several patients have been released, and the patients that remain are as comfortable as we can make them. Tax the rich, feed the poor. We’re not in a replicator society, and healthcare hasn’t reached everyone it should yet... but it will.
Batman and Wonder Woman employ all of their energies—and those of the civilians, supers, and Themyscirans who follow their banner—into getting this done. A work-life balance used to be a benefit of not actually being Batman. Bruce Wayne was always just a mask, but now J’onn spends more time in that face than he does; at least the investors are happy with their Bruce. We’re dumping all of the fuel at once and we know it. We’re hoping the systems we put in place will outlast our burnout.
Batman didn’t plan to pivot like this even as he oversaw the League’s last legs. He doubtless had a plan—plans—for a post-League world, but none of this infrastructure was in place even eight years ago. We caught word of a withdrawn nomad with blue-black hair righting Herculean wrongs across the world and suddenly Wonder Woman made a lot of visits to the Batcave.
I don’t think they formed this partnership and brought us all in on this just for Clark Kent. Not really. Bruce already had the connections, and Diana Prince started her association with the wider world as an ambassador. They didn’t start this for him. Not in the hope that if they eased some of the world’s burdens, that they’d ease some off his shoulders. That would be...
They probably didn’t both go all-in on this and drag everyone with them just for Superman.

‘Who the f**k wants to play?’: ImperialHal says Apex ranked changes are killing playerbase, viewership
Tumblr media
The point system for the ranked mode underwent significant adjustments in the most recent season of Apex Legends with the goal of shifting the competitive emphasis of the battle royale to the ranked ladder. Players were given a broken system that, despite considerable criticism from experts and content producers, rewarded not even playing the game while punishing lower-ranked players. TSM’s ImperialHal talked about the impact of the season 17 changes on a June 4 ranked stream with XSET’s Sikezz, citing how the community is not interested in Apex this season, and that the ranked changes have directly impacted the interest in watching Apex on a competitive and casual level. Hal expressed confusion over Respawn’s decisions and changes to ranked in season 17, saying how the current state of ranked is turning the community away from playing Apex altogether. Hal also voiced his concerns over the future viewership of pros and competitive channels, pointing out the difference in his own channel numbers when streaming ALGS matches to normal ranked sessions. Hal and Sikezz both highlighted their importance as role models within the competitive Apex community, and how their viewership numbers also speak to the state of the game, from ALGS tournament days to normal ranked grind sessions, and how interested an average viewer is compared to previous seasons. https://twitter.com/Cutnoid/status/1656384427902025731 With a two-month gap between Split 2 of the ALGS Pro League and LAN playoffs, Hal emphasized the importance of a healthy ranked system to keep players actively engaged with Apex during the off-season of the ALGS, and how the negative reception to ranked is causing a massive loss in both players and viewers who could potentially be interested in picking up Apex on a casual or competitive level. According to StreamsCharts, Apex’s viewership has dropped on Twitch in all aspects compared to last season’s release in February. Hours watched, average viewer count, and amount of channels streaming the game have all gone down when compared to season 16’s records. Hal called these numbers to attention, and how many of his fellow pros are bored with this season of ranked, preferring to stream other games instead of Apex. Steam Charts also reports a drop in average and peak players. Season 16’s February release drew in the highest Steam player count of all time, peaking at 624,473 players. Season 17’s current peak is 584,294 players, with average player numbers falling 30,000 short of Revelry’s average count. The dev team’s intentions when creating the new ranked system was to completely shift how players viewed every match of Apex. Respawn put a higher emphasis on placement, rewarding teams with more points for “winning” a round of Apex by placing in the top half of the lobby, while diminishing the RP earned for kills and assists per round. Also at the start of season 17, MMR was introduced to ranked, alongside an initial 10 placement matches to determine a player’s skill level. Design director Evan Nikolich claimed that the changes would target the ranked problem of cheaters, saying “they can no longer sandbag their points to go stomp on lower-skill players.” The results after the changes had the exact opposite effect, with placement matches grouping players of all ranks together, no matter how far apart their previous season’s results were. A bronze player in their first placement match of the season could be matched up against three-stacks of predators as the MMR tried to find their skill bracket. https://twitter.com/TuHyoo/status/1656563891801866241 Another unpopular change was the even entry fee for ranked, a flat 35 RP for all ranks. With players being punished less for losing and receiving more for just outlasting half of the lobby, it became easier to climb than ever without even shooting a single shot. This created the biggest problem in all of Apex’s ranked history, as players twisted Respawn’s initial intentions of surviving to the end and created strategies solely centered on hiding away from all the action. Ratting has become a popular and very effective strategy on all levels of the ranked ladder. Some pros frustrated with the system have taken it upon themselves to show exactly how broken the changes are, vowing to climb through the ranks without doing damage to demonstrate how Respawn broke ranked, and even succeeding within days of season 17’s release. https://twitter.com/sweetdreams/status/1656416937667338240 Hal wrapped up his point by talking about how ranked feels diluted compared to past seasons, and that if these problems continue to persist without any acknowledgement or changes, Apex will continue to lose more and more of its community. Viewers and fans can only hope that with the amount of backlash from both the casual and competitive scenes, Respawn will take note and either revert, or once again completely change the ranked system for the future of Apex. The conference finals are set for the 2022 NBA Playoffs. In the East, the top-seeded Miami Heat will take on the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics. In the West, the No. 3 seed Golden State Warriors will face the No. 4 seed Dallas Mavericks. The winners of each series will meet in the 2022 NBA Finals.
The Celtics are the hottest team in the NBA right now. Boston was sitting in ninth-place in the Eastern Conference on Feb. 1 before closing the regular season on a tear behind the league’s No. 1 defense. After beating Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets in round one, the Celtics took out the reigning champion Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetokounmpo in round two in a thrilling seven-game series. The Heat never needed a late season surge. Miami has been near or at the top of the East all season, and they’re back in the conference finals only two years after reaching the NBA Finals in the bubble in 2020. Many of the main characters in Miami remain, with Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and head coach Erik Spoelstra still squarely in the spotlight. The Heat punched their ticket to the conference finals after outlasting Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks in round one and a talented Philadelphia 76ers team in round two. Miami also finished in the top five in defensive rating this year, but their offense — which finished No. 12 — has occasionally ran into problems scoring in the halfcourt.
The Golden State Warriors failed to make the playoffs last season, but they’ve been one of the league’s best teams since the start of the season this year. Stephen Curry and Draymond Green remain franchise pillars, and Klay Thompson is finally back from injury after missing two straight seasons. The new Warriors sensation is 22-year-old guard Jordan Poole, who gives Golden State a necessary injection of speed, creation, and shooting. The Warriors beat an injured Denver Nuggets team in round one before beating the Memphis Grizzlies in six games in round two. Meanwhile, the Mavs are the most surprising team still left standing. Dallas just knocked off a Phoenix Suns team that won a league-high 64 games in the regular season to punch its ticket to the conference finals. Luka Doncic feels like the best player remaining in the playoffs, and Dallas has done a great job getting wing defenders, playmakers, and shooters since last season. Head coach Jason Kidd deserves significant credit for creating the game plan that limited Chris Paul, Devin Booker, and the rest of the Phoenix’s attack.
Here’s the schedule for the conference finals, followed by a prediction below.

Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat NBA Playoffs prediction for 2022 Eastern Conference Finals
Celtics in 6: The big question going into this series is if Miami can score against Boston’s set defense. It seems unlikely. Boston is equipped to guard the Heat in the halfcourt with almost no weak defenders in the rotation. On the other end, it feels like Boston has enough spacing to stretch out the Heat defense and let Tatum go to work against a Heat defense with more weak spots. Miami star Jimmy Butler will put together a Herculean effort, but Boston just feels like the more complete team.
Golden State Warriors vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Playoffs prediction for 2022 Western Conference Finals
Mavs in 6: This is an upset pick, but Dallas’ series win against the Suns was just that convincing. For all of Curry’s greatness, Doncic feels like the more overwhelming star right now. Dallas has two great wing defenders who can shoot in Dorian Finney-Smith and Reggie Bullock, two extra creators in Jalen Bruson and Spencer Dinwiddie, and a head coach in Jason Kidd who pushed all the right buttons against a more talented Phoenix team. It will be fascinating to see if the Mavs’ ability to wear down Chris Paul can translate to Curry. Ultimately, it feels like Dallas is well equipped for the Warriors’ perimeter stars while Golden State doesn’t have a natural matchup for Doncic.

Your Top Five Pulp Heroes that you wish were better known? By Pulp Hero fans, I mean. Since pretty much all of them except Conan and Tarzan are fairly unknown.
It’s actually quite hard for me to narrow it down to just five, because I’m having to choose between characters that are my favorites that I wish were more well-known and appreciated (which is all of them), and characters that aren’t quite my favorites but I very much think should have achieved great popularity for a myriad of reasons. So instead I’m going to pick some of each. These are not necessarily ranked by their importance or my personal taste, just 5 characters I felt like highlighting in particular.
Honorable mentions goes to characters I already talked about prior and don’t want to repeat myself on. These aren’t “lesser” picks, just ones that I already talked about: Imaro (who in particular definitely feels like he could, and should be, a pop culture superstar if he was only more well-known), Kapitan Mors (who’s got a lot in common with one of my favorite fictional characters, Captain Nemo, but also has a lot of interesting things going on for him as his own character). Sar Dubnotal (a character that appeals a lot to me and I think should be included much more often in pulp hero team-ups). The Golden Amazon (again, definitely a character that feels like it’s just begging to have a pop culture breakout, even comic books rarely if ever have female supervillains this ruthless and over-the-top), The Mexican Fantomas (who absolutely deserves a better name than what I’m calling him here, because he’s incredibly awesome and leagues ahead of just being a knock-off). And of course my homeboy, The Grey Claw, whom I would consider Number One of the list if it wasn’t for the fact that his obscurity has left him untouched by copyright and I got plans of my own for the character that wouldn’t be possible if he was more well-known, so I guess I’m ultimately glad he’s obscure (even if I’m still bothered by how little he’s known).
Allright let’s go:
Number 5: Sheridan Doome
Tumblr media
Sheridan Doome appeared in fifty-four stories and three novels from 1935 to 1943. As chief detective for U.S. Naval Intelligence, Lieutenant Commander Sheridan Doome’s job was a grim one. Whenever an extraordinary mystery or crime occurred in the fleet, on a naval base, or anywhere the navy worked to protect American interests, Doome was immediately dispatched to investigate it. Fear and dread would always precede Doome’s arrival in his special black airplane. For, in an explosion during WWI, he had been monstrously disfigured.
He was six feet two inches tall; had a chalk-white face and head. It appeared as though it had once been seared or burned. For eyes, he had only black blotches; glittering optics, that looked like small chunks of coal. His nose was long, the end of it squared off rudely. He had no lips, just a slit that was his mouth. His neck was long, as white and as bony as his face…. Sheridan Doome looked more like a robot than a human being. He was tall and ghastly; his uniform fitted him in a loose manner. Long arms hung at his sides; his face was a perfect blank. He had no control of his facial muscles; consequently, his countenance was always without expression, chalky and bony.
But behind the ugliness was a brilliant mind. Sheridan Doome always got his man. Before Sheridan Doome became a staple in the pages of The Shadow magazine, two Doome hardcover mysteries were written in the mid-1930’s by acclaimed hard-boiled author Steve Fisher (I Wake Up Screaming) and edited by his wife Edythe Seims (Dime Detective, G-8 and His Battle Aces). Age of Aces now brings you both books in one huge double novel, presented in a retro “flip book” style. This book is currently Out of Print.
I sadly don’t have any more information on the character other than this. The book is unavailable for me to acquire in any capacity, and the text above is taken from the Age of Aces website as well as Jess Nevins’s personal profile for the character. I’m not even sure if any of those 54 stories even exist anymore, since although he was published as a backup in Shadow Magazine, there doesn’t seem to be reprints of them anywhere, at least as far as I can find, and the original Shadow magazines have largely turned to dust by now.
A character who combines aspects of The Phantom of the Opera and The Shadow, whose adventures are set in a backdrop that can easily lead to ocean adventures? That’s like, what, three of my favorite things in the world combined. I really, really wish I could at least read the stories this character stars in, but as is, this description is all I can provide. Again, time really has been cruel to the pulp heroes.
Number 4: Harlan Dyce
Tumblr media
This is another character I’ve only been able to learn about through Jess Nevins’s archives and have not been able to attain any further information on, which is sadly the case with a lot of pulp heroes that nowadays only seem to exist as footnotes in his Encyclopedia or records in libraries. I don’t post more about these characters because I really would just be copying the stuff he wrote without much to justify me quoting him verbatim, and I hate the idea of doing that.
I especially hate that in Harlan Dyce’s case though. Here’s his description
“Dyce had brains, taste, money, ambition, and a total lack of physical or spiritual fear. But—
“Dyce was thirty-three inches tall and weighed sixty pounds.
“That was all the world could ever hold against him. That was what had made the world, most of it, in all the countries of the world, stare at Harlan Dyce, billed in the big show as “General Midge.””
Harlan Dyce is a misanthropic and venomous private detective. He has an “amazingly handsome face,” and the aforementioned brains. But all anyone sees is his stature, and he hates that and turns his cold eyes and acid tongue on them.
The only person Dyce likes and gets along with (besides his dwarf wife, a former client) is his assistant, Nick Melchem, a six-foot tall former p.i.’s assistant with bleak eyes and a strong body. Melchem ignores Dyce’s stature and treats Dyce normally, which Dyce responds warmly to.
Dwarfs may be the single most maligned group of people depicted in pulp magazines, even more so than the Japanese in the war years or the Chinese during the peak of the Yellow Peril’s popularity. Evil dwarfs, murderous dwarfs, sexually depraved dwarfs, they are all loathsome, ugly cliches that are, sadly, the only instances you see of dwarf characters being represented at all, with the only ones who are awarded any measure of sympathy are doomed henchmen or tragic villains.  Even outside of the pulps, the only other examples of heroic, protagonist dwarfs I can think off the top of my head are Puck from Marvel Comics and Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones.
I’m not gonna say Harlan Dyce is great representation because I’m not a little person and can never make that kind of claim for a group I’m not a part of, but Harlan Dyce may be the first time I’ve ever seen a dwarf character in pulp fiction who was not a villain or a murderous goon or a victim, but an actual person and a heroic protagonist, and that definitely counts for something. I’m not sure how popular this character was or could be if someone picked up the concept and ran with it (and I’m pretty sure he’s public domain), but I definitely think this is a character that should exist and should be popular.
Hell, this character has Peter Dinklage written all over it, give it to him. Maybe then he will get to play a smart, fearless, cynical, misanthropic but good-natured and heroic character in something where he actually gets to keep these traits until the show ends.
Number 3: Audaz, O Demolidor
Tumblr media
Audaz is a Brazilian character who was created and published by Gazetinha, the same publishers of Grey Claw as well as properties exported from elsewhere like Superman and Popeye, and much like The Grey Claw, he is also completely unknown even here. I’ll get to Audaz more in-depth sometime but here I’m going to provide a quick summary:
Audaz, The Demolisher is a gigantic crime-fighting robot controlled and piloted by the brilliant scientist Dr. Blum, his close friend Gregor and the child prodigy Jacques Ennes, who pilot the giant robot from a massive laboratory inside it's head rather than a cockpit. He takes on a variety of ordinary human criminals, mad scientists, supervillains and invading armies, towering over skyscrapers and grappling with jets.
Audaz was created in 1939 by illustrator Messias de Melo, a year before Quality Comics's Bozo the Iron Man and 5 years before Ryuichi Yokoyama's Kagaku Senshi, and decades before the debut of Mazinger Z. Although he is not the first giant robot of science fiction, he is the first heroic giant robot piloted by human pilots, and thus the first true example of "mecha" fiction.
Number 2: Emilia the Ragdoll
Tumblr media
This is another Brazilian character, although nowhere near as obscure as Audaz as even a cursory Google search can show. Although Brazil did not have a “pulp era” in the same way the US had, we’ve long gotten past the point of sticking to it as a definitive rule, and I’m including Emilia as a pulp hero because she’s a 1920s fantasy literature character who was created under a publishing company that released pulp stories, because she doesn’t quite belong in the mold of fantasy literature characters she takes after, and because I like her and if I was putting a bunch of pulp heroes together in the same story, I would definitely include Emilia in it. It’s not like she really has anywhere else to go, now that she’s public domain and she’s outlasted her franchise.
As you can tell by the above image, Emilia’s had a lot of variations over the years and that’s because the work she was created for, Sítio do Picapau Amarelo (Yellow Woodpecker Ranch/Farm), has become a major bedrock of Brazilian fantasy literature, one of the only works created here that you can find substantial information about in English if you go looking for it. Here’s some descriptions of Emilia’s character:
Emília is a rag doll described as "clumsy" or "ugly", resembling a "witch" that was handmade by Aunt Nastácia, the ranch's cook, for the little girl Lúcia, out of an old skirt. After Lucia takes her on an adventure and the doll is given a dose of magic pills, Emília suddenly started talking, and would never stop henceforth.
Emilia has a rough, antagonistic personality, and an independent, free-spirited and anarchist behaviour. She is rogue, rebellious, stubborn, rough and intensely determined at anything she sets her mind on, eager to take off on just about any adventure. She is often immature and behaves like a curious and arrogant child, always wanting to be the center of attention.
She is extremely opinionated even when she constantly and confidently mispronounces words and expressions. Her attitude often gets her into trouble, and she very often has to fight against the villains who attack her home on the Yellow Woodpecker Farm and mistreat her friends.
In the stories, Emilia often takes the role of a heroine who travels through different realms and dimensions, as the books include not only figures from Brazilian and worldwide folklore, but also several characters both real and fictional, such as Hercules, King Arthur, Don Quixote, Thumbelina, Da Vinci, Shirley Temple, Captain Hook, Santos Dumont and Baron von Munchausen.
She's fought scorpions and martians and nymph hordes, her arch-enemy is an alligator witch, she rescued an angel from the Milky Way and tried to teach it how to become a human, and once shrunk the entire population of Earth to try and talk the president of the United States into ending war forever.
To little surprise, she has become the most popular character and the series’s mascot.
It’s a little strange to consider Emilia underrated considering she is one of the most famous original characters of Brazilian literature, but hardly anyone outside of Brazil even knows who she is, and regardless of the quality of the original stories (and Monteiro Lobato’s views on race that tar much of his reputation), Emilia definitely feels to me like a character that should be a lot more popular globally.
She is the only character from Yellow Woodpecker Ranch that has transcended the original stories, since she was always the most popular character and there’s been a couple of stories written about her that usually separate her from the ranch and just set her out on the world by herself. The latest story about this character has been a series called The Return of Emilia, that’s about her stepping out of the books in 2050 and discovering a Brazil that’s been ruined by social and ecological devastation, and traveling back in time via a flying scooter in order to try and prevent this calamity.
Now that she’s public domain, I definitely think there’s some great stories that can be told with the character that just about anyone could get to, and I definitely think she’s a character that deserves more appreciation. Anything goes in stories starring her and it’s that kind of free-for-all freedom that I think can benefit future takes on pulp heroes. I would be very happy to place Emilia among them.
Oh yeah, and there was one time she kicked Popeye's ass by tricking him with a can of mouldy cabbage instead of spinach, making him sick and then beating him, which possibly puts her as one of the all-time badasses of fiction, except she would be pissed at not being number one and likely embark on a quest to beat everyone else just to prove she could, because that’s how Emilia rolls.
Number 1: Luna Bartendale, from The Undying Monster (1922)
Tumblr media
Not necessarily my favorite of the bunch, but one who sort of epitomizes what you asked, a character who is both incredibly obscure and incredibly underrated in every sense. Despite the book being somewhat known, mainly thanks to the movie, the character is so obscure that I don’t even have an illustration of her to display here, not even fan art, just one of the book’s covers that I think best conveys it. Luckily, the book is also available freely online, so you can all go check it out here. The movie adaptation does not feature the character of Luna Bartendale which makes it pointless to talk about.
To not spoil it too much, The Undying Monster is a very fascinating book, ahead of it’s time in quite a few ways. You expect it to just be a detective story centered around a werewolf cursed, except the subtitle of the book is “The Fifth Dimension” and then it goes to talk about dimensions of thought and post-WWI trauma and love and hypnotic regression that travels through time and ancient runes and Norse mythology. It’s not exactly an easy book to get through in one setting, but I’d recommend it much the same if only because it’s got supersensitive psychic sleuth Luna Bartendale, literature’s first female occult detective, and she’s an incredible character who absolutely feels like she should have become a literary icon.
She lives in London but is world-renowned for her many good deeds. She is a small, pretty woman, with curly blonde hair, dark eyebrows and a high-bridged nose, and a slight build. She has a voice described as a light soprano that "does not make much noise but carries a long way".
Petite, bedimpled and golden curled, Luna is completely in charge of events, dominating every scene that she appears in with her welcoming disposition and cleverness.
Bartendale has various psychic powers, including mind reading. She is well-versed in psychic and occult lore, is a “supersensitive” psychic, and has a “Sixth Sense” which allows her to trace things and people through both the Fourth and the Fifth Dimension. (The Fifth Dimension is “the Dimension that surrounds and pervades the Fourth–known as the Supernatural”).
Her extensive knowledge of occult rites and practices puts John Silence, Carnacki and Miles Pennoyer to shame, and she beats them all with her "super-sensitive" gift of being able to psychically connect with troubled souls and hypnotize them.
She uses a divining rod for various tasks, including psychic detection and tracking, and distinguishing between benevolent and malevolent forces. She has various (undefined) powerful psychic defenses, can carry on seances, and can even cure a person of “wehrwolfism.” And she can always rely on her massive, intelligent dog Roska for help.
Luna sadly doesn’t show up in the book as often as I’d hoped, but everything about this character is so delightful. In a lot od ways she hardly feels like a pulp hero, at least the ones I usually talk about. She feels like a lost protagonist from an incredibly successful kid’s adventure series where a kind and eccentric detective witch and her giant dog go around solving occult mysteries and encountering all sorts of weird supernatural beings while counseling and helping people, like Ms Frizzle meets Hilda. Like this character is just waiting for Cartoon Saloon to make a film about her.
Its not so much “this character should/could be popular but it’s clear why that didn’t pan out”, it’s more me being confused as “why the hell isn’t she super popular? This character should have had a franchise ages ago, holy shit put her in everything””

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” Charles Dickens’ tale of love and tumult during the French Revolution comes to the screen in a sumptuous film version by the producer famed for nurturing sprawling literary works: David O. Selznick (David Copperfield, Anna Karenina, Gone with the Wind). Ronald Colman (The Prisoner of Zenda) stars as Sydney Carton – sardonic, dissolute, a wastrel…and destined to redeem himself in an act of courageous sacrifice. “It's a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done,” Carton muses at that defining moment. This is far, far better filmmaking too: a Golden Era marvel of uncanny performances top to bottom, eye-filling crowd scenes (the storming of the Bastille, thronged courtrooms, an eerie festival of public execution) and lasting emotional power. Revolution is in the air!

Times are tough for cotton miller Archie (Karl Malden), but at least he has his child bride (Carroll Baker), who’ll soon be his wife in title and truth. The one-year agreement keeping them under the same roof – yet never in the same bed – is about to end. But a game with a sly business rival (Eli Wallach) is about to begin. In Baby Doll, as in A Streetcar Named Desire, director Elia Kazan and writer Tennessee Williams broke new ground in depicting sexual situations – earning condemnation from the then-powerful Legion of Decency. They earned laurels too: four Academy Award® nominations, Golden Globe® Awards for Baker and Kazan, and a British Academy Award for Wallach. Watch this funny, steamy classic that, as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide proclaims, “still sizzles.”

Doris Day and Gordon MacRae team for spoonin’, croonin’ and swoonin’ On Moonlight Bay, based on Booth Tarkington’s Penrod stories. “Try not to walk like a first baseman,” Mama (Rosemary DeCamp) tells tomboy Marjorie (Day) as she prepares to date college man Bill (MacRae). The advice takes. The lovebirds hear wedding bells ahead, just as soon as Bill gets his sheepskin. But World War I rages “over there.” And Papa (Leon Ames) rages at home after a flap with his prospective son-in-law. Will harmony return to this Hoosier home? Surely Day and MacRae will make musical harmony. And On Moonlight Bay will have you sailing along.

Eight players who could leave Barcelona before the transfer deadline – PF
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s common knowledge that Barcelona are in a financial crisis.Their out-of-control finances meant Lionel Messi could not be retained and the club are desperate to reduce their wage bill. While players such as Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba have signed new contracts with reduced salaries, Barca still need to shift some players. With days before the transfer window shuts, we’ve identified eight men who could leave the Camp Nou before the deadline. Ousmane Dembele It’s safe to say that Barcelona’s big-money gamble for Dembele hasn’t paid off, after they reinvested a large wedge of the Neymar cash to sign the Borussia Dortmund winger when he was one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Europe, back in 2017. There have been some bright flashes over the years, and 30 goals and 21 assists in 118 appearances is not a terrible return, but it’s not quite what the club would have envisaged. Persistent injuries have resulted in the France international failing to realise his potential whilst at the Camp Nou, and reports suggest he’s one of the high earners they’re now desperate to get off their wage bill. But with just a year left on his contract, they’d be lucky to recoup a fraction of the €147million they originally signed him for. Philippe Coutinho Dembele Mk.II, Coutinho walked through the door six months later for another sizeable fee. The Neymar windfall gone, just like that. The issue is that Coutinho was neither a suitable replacement for his compatriot Neymar, nor Andres Iniesta in midfield, and has always looked an awkward fit at the Camp Nou. He remains contracted for another two years, but it’s been clear that the Catalan club have been aiming to offload him since 2019, when Bayern picked up his exorbitant wages on a season-long loan. He rubbed salt into their wound by scoring two late goals in an 8-2 thrashing in the Champions League before returning and doing very little of note under Ronald Koeman. The tabloids continue to talk up the prospect of a Liverpool reunion, but the idea of them or anyone else paying a large transfer fee looks unlikely. But there may well be the opportunity for another loan. Antoine Griezmann A theme is emerging here. Barcelona’s third all-time most expensive signing is also said to be surplus to requirements as the club look to step back from the brink of financial crisis. A return to Atletico Madrid was mooted earlier in the summer, but nothing materialised. But you imagine as Barcelona’s desperation grows in the final days of the window, some cheeky lowball bids may come their way. ✅ @AntoGriezmann ✅ On the hour ✅ Copa del Rey final ✅ 💥 pic.twitter.com/jdPUIEV0PT — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) August 19, 2021 Riqui Puig Yet another technically superb midfielder to emerge from La Masia, Puig is one of the most highly-rated prospects to emerge in years – but Koeman doesn’t seem a fan, and handed him just two starts in La Liga last term. Some reports suggest that the 22-year-old is keen to stay and either prove himself to the Dutch coach or outlast him. But Catalan journalist Gerard Romero has reported that the Barcelona manager has advised Puig to move on and find a new home. Samuel Umtiti Umtiti started just six games across La Liga and the Champions League last season and made just eight further substitute appearances. And now Barca have signed Eric Garcia, the World Cup winner is arguably the fifth-choice centre-back at the Camp Nou. It’s been a sad fall from grace for Umtiti, who the club are attempting to persuade to cancel his contract and become a free agent. But, with reports suggesting Barca are struggling to find a buyer, perhaps the France international will stay after all. Miralem Pjanic It was always a strange signing for Barca to make and Pjanic looks set to leave the club in the near future. The 31-year-old didn’t set the world alight after joining from Juventus and Koeman is desperate to get his wages off the books. Pjanic has not been part of the first-team squad for either of Barcelona’s opening two games of the season. Pjanic’s agents held talks with Juve over a return, but are yet to reach an agreement over a move this summer. During this impasse, Napoli have registered an interest in the midfielder according to Mundo Deportivo. When asked about Pjanic and Umtiti’s future, Koeman told reporters: “There are players like them who have a very difficult time having minutes, but the final decision is always on the part of the players. “They have a complicated position, yes.” Sergio Aguero Having moved to Spain to play with compatriot Lionel Messi, Aguero must have been cursing his luck when the legendary attacker joined PSG earlier this month. Manchester City’s record goalscorer is not currently registered with the club, with injury ruling him out until October. Despite this, Aguero is reportedly so disappointed about Messi’s departure that he’s eyeing up a mid-season move to the MLS. That’s according to Phil Kitromilides, who hinted that sources close to Barcelona had told him the news on Monday morning’s Spanish Football Podcast, which he hosts with Guardian journalist Sid Lowe. Ilaix Moriba Moriba established himself in Barca’s first-team squad last season and you’d imagine Koeman would loathe seeing such a promising youngster leave the club. But the 18-year-old has rejected Barcelona’s offer of a new contract and negotiations stalled with the two parties failing to find common ground on the players’ wages. With no resolution in sight, Barcelona are preparing to listen to offers for the Guinea-born Spain youth international. Reports have suggested that the 18-year-old has caught the attention of Premier League side Tottenham. Chelsea, Manchester City, RB Leipzig and Real Madrid have also been heavily linked with Moriba. Vermont: 2023-24 America East Men's Basketball Champions
Tumblr media
The University of Vermont men's basketball team found out in the third game the resolve it possessed — however incalculable it might be to truly measure such a trait.
The Catamounts' roaring comeback vs. Charleston on Nov. 16 at the Myrtle Beach Invitational was the first of five victories this season after trailing by 10 or more points.
"We just knew the kind of guys we had in the locker room, it didn’t matter how far down we were," Vermont junior forward Ileri Ayo-Faleye said. "We had the type of dudes who were going to fight back and never give up."
No deficit too big to overcome. No foe too imposing to handle. Nothing, it seemed, could rattle this year's Catamounts.
And for the third straight March, Vermont's opponent in the America East championship game couldn't break that will. The Catamounts host this day, and own it, annually.
Behind Ayo-Faleye and Shamir Bogues' 94 feet of influence, the top-seeded Catamounts outlasted No. 2 UMass Lowell despite a halftime deficit for a 66-61 victory in the league's title game at sold-out Patrick Gym on Saturday, sealing a championship three-peat and booking yet another berth to the NCAA Tournament.
On a 10-game winning streak, the Catamounts (28-6) join the 2004-05 Vermont squad with three consecutive league tournament titles. The Catamounts, with 11 conference titles to extend their league record, have won five of the last six America East championships.
They'll learn their seed, site and opponent during Selection Sunday on CBS (6 p.m. eastern).
"This group is just so resilient and so tough and these two guys up here epitomize that as much as anybody in our program," 13-year UVM coach John Becker said of Ayo-Faleye and Bogues. "Really, they were the pillars of our program this year. The relentlessness, the athleticism, the instincts with which they play with is breathtaking. They brought so much joy to Catamount Country."
Bogues, a junior transfer guard from Tarleton State, was named the tournament's most outstanding player after collecting 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, four steals and no turnovers in 32 minutes in Saturday's final. Ayo-Faleye, a second-year transfer from Rhode Island, posted nine points, five boards, four assists, two steals, a trio of blocks and no turnovers in 36 minutes.
"We were down at half and still found a way to win," said Ayo-Faleye, who earned a spot on the all-championship team. "We stayed the course, listened to the coaches, listened to the messaging and just applied it. This time of year it’s all about execution."
Said Bogues: "Our message coming in was to stay together. And that’s what we did today."
TJ Long, also on the all-championship squad, sank four 3-pointers and totaled 14 points and three assists. Fifth-year senior Aaron Deloney added a dozen points thanks to a 7-for-8 effort at the foul line and one game-sealing layup, and Nick Fiorillo added 11 points for the Catamounts.
Cam Morris (17 points, 10 rebounds), Brayden O'Connor (14 points) and Ayinde Hikim (11 points) each reached double figures for Lowell.
Saturday's championship encapsulated much of Vermont's gutsy season. The Catamounts struggled to score around the paint, had stretches of shooting dry spells from their outside threats, and had to work from behind. But like they've done all winter, the Catamounts drummed up answers with elite-level defense and a plenty of timely and much-needed Long 3-pointers.
"Knowing that there is going to be adversity throughout the game, just weathering the storm and being able to come out with the win is the most important thing," Ayo-Faleye said. "Never getting too high or too low, just staying even and knowing that we are going to pull it out."
Vermont's early, 19-11 advantage was wiped out by inefficiency on offense — seven straight missed field goals — and the River Hawks (22-10) not only climbed back into contention but took a 32-29 margin into halftime. A year ago, Lowell also had a slight edge at the break before Vermont pulled away.
"UMass Lowell — give them the credit they deserve. They’ve been a team that’s been nipping at our heels for the last bunch of years," Becker said. "They are tough, they are experienced. They battled and we knew it was going to be a tough game. I have a lot of respect for (coach Pat Duquette) and his program."
In a game that featured 11 lead changes and five ties, Vermont created breathing room with a 13-4 spurt highlighted by a pair of Fiorillo triples and an Ayo-Faleye hook shot for a 60-50 lead with 4:01 left in regulation.
To start the separating run, Fiorillo poured in a 3-pointer following Ayo-Faleye's drive into the paint and kick to the wing. Ayo-Faleye also got a crafty and nimble reserve layup to drop through and Bogues steered in a baseline runner on back-to-back possessions.
Ayo-Faleye's hook shot, though, was the type of offense Vermont had been lacking throughout the year without a true post-up presence. The Catamounts won without that position last year with Robin Duncan and Dylan Penn, and have pulled off a similar scheme with Bogues' skillset.
"I thought he made the biggest play of the game," Becker said of Ayo-Faleye's hook.
The Riverhawks made one last push, uncorking a quick 5-0 spurt to trail 60-55 with 3:29 to go. After Fiorillo's two foul shots and Connor's basket made it a five-point game again, Morris missed both of his free-throw attempts and Deloney, the team leader, soared for the final dagger to secure the Catamounts' three-peat.
Instead of letting the clock tick down, Deloney saw an opening to the basket, and the speedy guard bolted to the hoop for a finish off the glass and 64-57 lead with 43 seconds left.
Counting the championship awarded following the cancellation of the 2020 final due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Deloney is now a four-time America East tournament champion, joining former teammates Ben Shungu and Robin Duncan.
"You just get to see kids grow up. AD is a man now. He was a little kid when he got here," Becker said.
Vermont also pulled off three in a row with three remarkably different squads. The Catamounts reloaded this winter after the graduation of four starters, just like they had to do following the 2021-22 campaign. Their program mission remains in sight: Advance to the second weekend at the NCAA Tournament.
"These guys want to go to the tournament and we want to win. We are trying to get this program to Sweet 16s," Becker said. "We are a national brand, we are nationally relevant. I’m not going to let anyone in this program be comfortable with what we did or done. We want to do the next thing until I run out of goals and then I’ll retire if there’s nothing left to shoot for.
"I’m going to continue to try and dream big here."

the Fallout 4 pokemon au no one asked for.
I asked one (1) person if this was wanted and they said yes. So, here is a 17 page list of the Fo4 companions as gymleaders and Elite 4.
for followup on type choices, here ya go
edit// as i view this more ill probably make changes/adjustments
Warning- This post is 17 pages long in Google Docs. This is not a simple snack, it’s a Golden Coral buffet. For the love of Arceus dont open if you’re on mobile. Your phone will melt.
GYM LEADERS
SANCTUARY
Codsworth: Beats doing housework!
A Mister Handy that’s kept Sanctuary from collapsing for 200 years, Codsy is a gentleman through and through. His old owner supposedly dead, he’s still keeping the house spick and span. While tending to the Carrot Flowers, two little creatures wandered up to him, and the metal butler was smitten. Scavengers who come to pick through the ruins are met with a robot who is very insistent on not letting people steal from his neighbors, dead or not. After word got out to avoid Sanctuary if you didn’t want your Pokemon to faint, people started coming in droves to meet the challenge. “It’s just a robot, how bad could it be?” Answer: Quite bad. He doesn’t really have a Gym, but the Elite 4 noticed him enough to make him a Leader. His Badge is the Rust Badge, and he gives out TM61, Will-o-wisp.

DIAMOND CITY
Piper Wright: Can’t stop the Press!
Piper is a part-time gym-leader, part-time reporter, and full time sister. With her hectic schedule, her composed Grass types help her errands and keeping her sane. Piper’s paper, Publick Occurrences, used to be about news and advice for Trainers, but lately it’s been mostly accusing the city’s mayor of consorting with the shadowy Institute, known for stealing Pokemon and kidnapping people. Because of this, Mayor McDonough is constantly threatening to take Piper’s Gym (and Pokemon) away. She’s been arrested multiple times for disturbing the peace and causing fights among the citizens of Diamond City, no matter how hard her team tries to stop her. If you can withstand her onslaught of status moves, she gives you the Paper Badge and TM86, Grass Knot.

TRINITY TOWER
Strong: Strong is Strong.
Trinity Tower was a ruin after the war; but recently, Fighting-Type Trainers have made the place a Dojo, training themselves and their Pokemon with discipline and restraint. The Gym Leader doesn’t do any of this. Strong uses absolute brute force to decimate his foes and underlings. Strong came to Trinity Tower because he heard that Fighting-Types were strong against Normal-Types. After wiping the floor with the trainers, he demolished the previous Leader to the point the man went off the grid in embarrassment. Even though his underlings’ favoured Pokemon counter his own, his ferocity and mercilessness lets his Normal-Type Pokemon stand victorious. If you can fight his brawn with brain, he gives you the Berzerk Badge, along with TM64, Explosion, which he is so very sad his Pokemon can’t use.

THE COMBAT ZONE
Cait: The Irish Cage Fighter!
The Combat Zone was once a theater, before the war. After the bombs dropped, it was turned into a fighting ring. It had actually decent customers and audiences, until raiders took over. But, throughout it all (excluding before the war), Cait was the star of the show. She beats her opponents down and down and down, whether with her fists or her Pokemons’. She used to be the 5th leader, but after the raiders took over, her mental health went on a rapid decline and consequently, so did her battle ability. Now, she’s far better at beating someone’s face in with a bat than she is with Pokemon. Her Pokemon are very strong, but she just can’t use their power to her advantage anymore. Her badge is the Trigger Rush badge, and she gives you TM08, Bulk Up. Also - your biggest threat isn’t her Machamp. That Stufful will destroy you, your team, and your will to live.

GOODNEIGHBOR
Hancock: Of the People, For the People!
As the Mayor of GoodNeighbor, John Hancock doesn’t want to waste time and resources for an actual Gym. To challenge him, simply walk up and ask for a battle. Since Hancock is the Mayor, he doesn’t have a lot of time to spend battling, so he fights only a select few of his challengers. First, they have to get in good with his town. If the challenger doesn’t follow the rules of GoodNeighbor and disrespects anyone in his town, they’re not getting a battle. Second, they have to get a reputation as a strong trainer. Hancock doesn’t like wasting his time with overconfident people who more bark than bite, and he doesn’t like crushing dreams of younger trainers who just want to prove themselves. If you can somehow defeat his beloved Scizor, he gives you the Isotope Badge, along with TM28, Leech Life.

LOCATION UNKNOWN
No one knows.
The Sixth Leader is almost impossible to find. It changes daily. No one has ever fought the same Gym leader. Also, there’s no set gym. The Gym Leader will either be always on the move, or in a undisclosed, forgotten ruin that no one can find. They always have the same Pokemon and sunglasses, however, so some suspect it’s the same person being a jerk. The League claims that the leader hasn’t changed in years, and that the badge is authorized, but since no one can find the Leader, the badge isn’t necessary to fight the league. Apparently, the badge is the Cloak & Dagger badge, and the assigned Technical Machine is TM99, Dazzling Gleam.

CAMBRIDGE
X6-88: Pokemon Redefined.
Who is the strange man that appeared out of nowhere to take over when the last Gym Leader moved? No one seems to know. The most heartless of both the Gym leaders and the Elite 4, he has no mercy for his challengers, and little respect for his underlings. As much as he appears to hate pretty much everyone, he strangely seems to like the 8th Gym Leader, who hates him. Despite how ruthless he is with training and work, and how hard he pushes people to push their Pokemon, he has been seen using baby-talk with his own. His Pokemon are wickedly strong, but if you can melt them down, you win the Harmonic badge, with TM79, Frost Breath. Also, he’ll be your  #1 fan.

Danse: Shock and awe!
Danse’s old Gym was at the Cambridge Police Station, and then the Brotherhood Prydwen when it showed up. His battle tactics got the attention of the League, and they basically harassed him to accept. He only did because being a Gym Leader gives him and his Pokemon plenty of exercise and training. The supplies given as a ‘welcome’ gift from the E4 and the good rep he was getting for the Brotherhood didn’t hurt either. However, something happened within the Brotherhood, and Danse was kicked out. He’s still a Gym Leader, despite the protest of one of the Elite 4, and he now shares Sanctuary with Codsy. He has a shiny Skitty named Cupcake. His badge is the Authority Badge, and he gives you TM91, Flash Cannon. After being exiled, his mental health, much like Cait, has gone with the wind. Not only is he too mentally out of it to perform the best he can, his Pokemon are also thrown out of the loop, and are worried to death over him. He’s not nearly as powerful as he was a month ago.

ELITE 4
Curie: Though dangerous, battle is quite vigorous exercise!
Everyone in the League agrees: Curie is an absolute angel, too good for the Commonwealth. As an Elite 4 member, though, she’s the most hellish devil from the darkest pit of...hell. An avid lover of poison types, and prodigal with potions and status healers, Curie doesn’t fight offensively, but defensively, planning out her strategy to outlast her opponents until the poisons and confusion does the damage for her. Honestly, she only uses poison types because studying them helps her find cures and medicines, which she gladly shares with anyone. After battling her, she’ll heal your Pokemon and give you more supplies, whether you win or lose. Curie won’t let you give up. She has an Audino that she uses as a nurse to heal both people and Pokemon. It has little pom-poms to cheer you on as you battle Curie.

Elder Maxson: Ad Victoriam.
Intelligence, strength, power. These are some of many words used to describe Arthur Maxson, the Elder of his army, the Brotherhood of Steel. As the the Elder, Maxson personally makes sure his soldiers know what it means to be a Pokemon trainer. It isn’t about strength, defense, or speed, but raw determination, discipline, and respect for your team. Elder Maxson radiates power and generates respect. He stands tall, so his soldiers and Pokemon may look up to him. He walks with confidence, so his soldiers and Pokemon may march besides him with hope and vigor. Also, he’s kind of...racist. And pretty much anyone that isn’t a BoS soldier hates him. Has tried to personally kill the 7th and 8th gym leader - stopped because if he succeeded, he’d be booted from the E4, which he wants the BoS to have a firm foothold in.

MacCready: ‘Nother notch on my rifle!
Robert Joseph MacCready - a name that will bring a myriad of reactions depending on who you mention it to. Either despised or adored, people can agree on one thing only - the young man is way too good for his age. Picking up both a sniper rifle and a Fletchling at a young age to protect his people, MacCready is rude, greedy, materialistic - and a total family guy. His Togekiss and Drifblim were his wife’s before she died. He uses multiple tactics to win, and fights dirty. Defensive strategies and accuracy are key to reaching the Champion. Valentine: Peering deep into the darkness, wondering, fearing.
As the Commonwealth’s best (only) detective, Nick Valentine is always working. His room in the Elite 4 is his office, with papers stacked to the ceiling. His main office/workplace is in Diamond City, with his secretary, Ellie Perkins, running it while he’s away. It’s odd that he uses Dark-types, but people think he only uses them to fit his “Noir-Detective” aesthetic. They’re right and wrong. They do fit his aesthetic, especially with the black/pink color scheme with his Psychic types, but Dark types have a knack for solving mysteries. That knack, paired again with his Psychic Pokemon, help him immensely with cases. That, and their mischievousness is cute to him. Dogmeat, a shiny wild Mightyena, is often consulted for his nose-work.

THE CHAMPION
Preston Garvey: Protect the people at a minute’s notice.
Before the Minutemen army collapsed, they prided themselves on their Pokemon. Every Soldier was given a team that could best help with building settlements and protecting them. Water, Electric, and Grass types were mandatory, for growing food, electricity, and clean water. Preston joined the ranks with a Mudbray he had since he was a kid, born from his dad’s Mudsdale. It was the only Pokemon of his to survive Quincy. After the massacre, he made it his goal to be strong enough to never let history repeat itself. After Sanctuary was able to defend itself, he set out to find weak Pokemon, as he was raised to believe the strongest creatures start out as the smallest. Now, that determination can be seen by trainers all across the Commonwealth. Preston has the ability to carry out the protection he swore to the people of the wasteland, and he will mow down anyone or thing who threatens them.
