An American Werewolf in London (1981)- Directed by John Landis
Hello all! I am back to posting here after my hiatus, and I hope to be more active, as I watch a ridiculous amount of movies all of the time!
Okay, so, I just watched this movie for the first time this past Friday and WOW!!! It has everything I love in a movie: hot and dorky male leads, settings that I would like to live in, disgusting 80's practical effects, SEXUAL TENSION THAT COULD KILL SOMEBODY, and a scene where the insanely sexy male lead has a nauseating transformation into a grotesque creature (also present in The Fly (1986) and Fright Night (1985)).
This film was funny and insane and unsettling and HOT HOT HOT. I loved every minute of it, even when I had to look away (mostly just during the final Griffin Dunne corpse scene cause that thing looked terrifying). Also, I found out right after watching that this movie won an Oscar for best makeup and hair styling (which was so incredibly deserved), and that led me to looking into more movies Rick Baker has worked on and wow the list is crazy. Videodrome, Men in Black, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas are among some of the movies he's done sfx makeup for (all great).
My only small upset with the movie was that I didn't think my boy Griffin Dunne would die like 5 minutes in. He was the main reason I wanted to watch the movie, especially since I added it to my watch list immediately following my watch of After Hours. And, yes, he did come back and was present for a lot of the film, but he was in gross rotting corpse form and not cutesy regular guy form, which was a bummer. David Naughton was still really hot tho and ran around naked for a bit in the movie, so I think I am willing to forgive the makers of the movie for the Griffin Dunne thing.
Anyways... GO WATCH THIS MOVIE. It's good, it's fun, it's sexy. It's also October right now, so it's the perfect time to be watching movies like this. Okay, thank you for reading, and bye!

Morrissey
Who: Steven Patrick Morrissey
What: Musician
Where: English (Active, internationally)
When: May 22, 1959 - Present
Tumblr media
(Image Description: a black and white photo of Morrissey from 1992.  He is a young white man in his early thirties with dark hair and eyes. His hair is short and messy.  He has thick eyebrows and a strong jawline. He is smiling very slightly. He is wearing a pale knit sweater. End ID)
Morrisey is one of those world-famous single named singers: Cher, Sting, Prince, Madonna, Morrissey. Perhaps a little Bono as, while he is more ironic and droll than the U2 frontman, he also has a reputation for douche-baggery.  Morrissey is famous for his music's bleak drama blended with bleak humor, sexually ambiguousness, themes of the past and self-reflection, and being an all around "anti-pop idol".
Morrissey made a name for himself as the frontman for The Smiths in the 1980s (1982-87), but has a successful solo career since 1988 with only a brief hiatus from '98-'03.  His most beloved albums include The Queen is Dead (1986), Strangeways, Here We Come (1987), Viva Hate (1988), Your Arsenal (1992), Vauxhall and I (1994), You are the Quarry (2004), Years of Refusal (2009). His most recey album (California Son) came out in February of this year (2019).
He is outspoken politically on, for example, vegetarianism and animal rights and against the monarchy and Americanization. In 2006 a BBC poll voted him the second greatest living British cultural icon.
I admit that while I like the Smiths well enough I had never liked them enough to really follow Morrissey's career, which is odd as I do like the whole punk/new wave/post punk scene very much. But I started listening to him a bit for this and a bit depressing but quite good.
Tumblr media
(Image description: a photo of the Smiths backstage in 1984 by Tom Sheehan.  From left to right Andy Rourke [a white man with brown hair and a leather jacket. Below that he has on a shirt with what I think is a crow on it. He has his bass slung around his neck and his hands behind his back. He has his head slightly cocked], Morrissey [wearing a striped shirt with a low neck, long necklaces, and square glasses. He has his arms crossed], Mike Joyce [pale with black hair spiked up and his bangs falling into his face. He has on a Smiths t-shirt and is mostly hidden behind the others], and Johnny Marr [pale with a black mop top with long bangs, he is thin with an angular face, he is wearing a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He has his guitar slung around his neck and fingers on the frets.] End ID)
Orientation: Humasexual (A word of Morrissey's own creation meaning "attracted to humans" but I will go into why, in Morrissey's case, it seems to fit under the asexual umbrella.)
I'm breaking my own rule here. Morrissey does not call himself "asexual," but uses his own term: humasexual. But as he defines the term and the nature of his sexual/romantic orientation it fits under the aspec umbrella. At one point Morrissey identifed as a bisexual who "hates sex" and later a "non-practicing bisexual," but be later abandoned that terminology. By the 2010s he was very open on the exact nature of his orientation.
While I would not go up to him and demand he identify as aspec the experience he describes does fit in fairly neatly into our letter of the Alphabet Soup. Again, I would not demand anything of him. He is a human person. Sexual orientation is, in the end, highly personal and individual. Do not be The Guy/Gal/Person. In the end everyone is entitled to name and define their own experience.
It may seem odd that a man who writes a lot about sex/sexual desire in his music could be asexual, but I don't think writing is necessarily indicative of the writer's true feelings.  Morrissey agrees, saying time and time again from his earliest fame that he is writing a general story, not a biography. He says of his lyrics that "It was very important for me to try and write for everybody...nothing is ever open and shut.". Remember, while the artist always leaves a trace of themself in their art it is not always in the most obvious way.
I believe his humasexual might be closer to demi (or perhaps gray) than it is to utterly asexual. Aspec, but not at the zero/zero point, when we get to the quotes section I will explain further.  Morrissey is definitely not aromantic. But he was intentionally celibate until his mid-thirties. It was then he had his first serious relationship, all by his own admission, not being interested in sex much before that.  He still seems to have stints of celibacy. Sex as a "maybe" or a shrug rather than a necessity. And again it took a deep personal connection to his partner for him to even feel the urge to have sex. Indeed, he claimed to "hate" sex before that.
I hope to clear things up in the quotes section when I let Morrissey speak for himself, which he has done, extensively. I included quotes from his most recent public discussion on the matter from 2013.
Tumblr media
(Image Description: a more recent photo of Morrissey performing on stage this one in color. He has graying hair now and is slightly larger than he was as a younger man, though he is not overweight. He is just less trim. He is wearing a dark suit. His face is wracked with emotion, eyes closed, mouth open. He has one hand in front of him, open palmed. “Unfortunately, I am not homosexual. In technical fact, I am humasexual. I am attracted to humans.  But, of course . . . not many.”
-Morrissey in a statement from October 2013 (quoted by Time Magazine. Emphasis in original as it is the same in multiple sources) (I think this should be obvious. Again, labels are entirely up to the person using them and thus I am not applying one to Morrissey, but clearly he could stand under the ace umbrella mspec romantically and aspec sexually)
"[F]or the first time in my life the eternal ‘I’ becomes ‘we’, as, finally, I can get on with someone, Jake [Owen Walters] and I neither sought not needed company other than our own for the whirlwind stretch to come.”
-Morrissey in his 2013 memoir Autobiography.  (Walters was his first serious relationship.  The relationship began in 1994 and ended in 1996. It describes sentiment echoed by many demisexuals "'I' becomes 'we'" and "finally I can get on with someone". Also the idea of solitude may reflect an aspec relationship.)
"Girls remained mysteriously attracted to me, and I had no idea why, since although each fumbling foray hit the target, nothing electrifying took place, and I turned a thousand corners without caring … Far more exciting were the array of stylish racing bikes that my father would bring home.”
-Morrissey on being a teenager in that same memoir
"I don't recognise such terms as heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, and I think it's important that there's someone in pop music who's like that. These words do great damage, they confuse people and they make people feel unhappy so I want to do away with them."
-Morrissey in a 1985 interview. (I don't agree with him in the least, my label makes me very happy and I know it makes many other people happy [although I did feel like this before I had my asexual label.] I think he might have been projecting. I think his not quite fitting into anything made him uncomfortable and it shows why he might not be inclined to stick to a traditional label and instead invent his own.)
[Nick] Kent: …[Y]out write a lot about homosexual longing.
Morrissey: I've always said that I leave things very open and that I sing about people. Without limitation. And I don't think that automatically makes me homosexual.
Kent: What about...sexual relationships?
Morrissey: I don't have relationships at all. It's out of the question.
Kent: Why?
Morrissey: Partly because I have always been attracted to men or women who were never attracted to me. And I was never attracted to men or women who were attracted to me. So that's the problem. I've never met the right person.
-A 1985 interview with Nick Kent, quoted by David Brent in Morrissey: Scandal and Passion (2004) (not finding "the right person" seems quite demi to me. He also says that is "part" of the reason. So there is probably a more complicated reason too. Also of note, Morrissey doesn't like Kent [or at least didn't at the time] so odds are he was disinclined to further articulate his most personal life to him. But that is purely speculation and it is dicey waters even speculating that much.)

Good day to you! Trust this posting finds you well? I have three more songs this week for you and, should you like what you hear, the option is also there to explore the back catalogue of the artists so endless scope for enjoyment (nb: not ‘literally’ endless as there is an exhaustive quantity of music from each artist, it was merely a figure of speech.....). Let’s CRACK ON.
First up this week and an artist from North Carolina but now based in LA called Jonathan Wilson. Firmly set in the folk/country genre he has been active for over 20 years, first as part of duo Muscadine and secondly as a song writer & producer for other artists. It is with his solo project’s for which I came to find his music. In 2011 he released his debut album entitled ‘Gentle Spirit’, having written the album over the previous two years whilst combining his solo efforts with his song writing and production for the likes of Elvis Costello & Erykah Badu. One song from this album called ‘Desert Raven’ was on a Spotify trawl of mine many months ago and I loved the flowing guitar intro, very similar in feel to the echoing riff on Fleetwood Mac’s song Albatross. Upon hearing the song again recently I searched Mr Wilson to find a further two albums, his 2013 album release ‘Fanfare’ and a 2018 release ‘Rare Birds’. I gave the latest album a good listen whilst at work and the opening track I think is exceptional and have chosen to share. If slightly psychedelic folk is your bag baby then I can recommend Jonathan Wilson wholeheartedly.

Second up today and a band I’ve always heard about but never explored until now, The Black Crowes. They were formed in 1989 and after a hiatus between 2002 & 2005 they finally announced a final split in 2015. When I was getting into music I used to get endless compilation albums of rock/indie music in those ‘Now That’s What I Call An Indie Rock Anthem 1996′ style which had some absolute dross on, but occasionally some good stuff too! I clearly remember one such album having the song ‘Hard To Handle’ on it, a cover of the classic Otis Redding song. Upon inspection this song was released in 1990 so maybe I had a ‘Rock Songs Of The 90′s’ album as I don’t recall being quite so up to date with my music at the age of 6 in 1990! The Black Crowes were a hugely successful group in their early days and their first three albums; the 1990 debut ‘Shake Your Money Maker’, the 1992 follow up ‘The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion’ and the 1994 release ‘Amorica’ all being massive commercial hits which contained all their most successful and recognisable singles, namely ‘Hard To Handle’, ‘She Talks To Angels’ and ‘Remedy’. Whilst a fan of the first three albums and obviously a fan of that style of music I found a track of theirs recently and I have not been able to stop humming the opening bass line. Very different from their earlier hits, from their last album as a band, post hiatus, their 2009 album ‘Before The Frost...Until The Freeze’ which has a much more mature sound, they are certainly a band which all rock fans should give time to if you have not familiarised yourself with them previously. The song I’m sharing is not the truest reflection of their early success but still a decent track nevertheless.
The Black Crowes - I Ain’t Hiding - https://youtu.be/F1d0uImJKtU
Finally this week and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. From 1963 until 2008 the group had close to 100 members, with only one constant, John Mayall himself. Originally from Macclesfield he has been performing for over 50 years and is a brilliant blues rock singer and songwriter. During the lifespan of his Bluesbreakers group there had been some legendary names associate themselves and record under the banner of ‘The Bluesbreakers’. John McVie, Peter Green & Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac, Jack Bruce & Clapton from Cream, Andy Fraser from Free & Mick Taylor, lead guitarist with the Rolling Stones before Ronnie Wood joined. There have been many more who have graced recordings from the band, covering all ranges of instruments from double bass to saxophone. One of my favourite albums of the groups happens to coincide with when Mr Clapton was present in the group, the 1965 debut album ‘Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton’. Being a huge Clapton fan I was bound to enjoy the album and the opening track, ‘All Your Love’ which is a cover of blues-guitarist Otis Rush 1958 version sets the scene for many tracks which are simply in place to exhibit the talents of Clapton before he found mainstream fame. The Bluesbreakers would go on to release four albums, the last of which coming in 1968, before John Mayall would release tracks as a solo artist with the help of many session musicians. However in 1985 the name Bluesbreakers was back and from then until 2007 when the Bluesbreakers disbanded and Mayall went it alone once more, the band released a further 11 albums. Their 1965 debut has rightly been classed by many as the best and is the one I would recommend over any other. If you like your blues rock then there really is no better group to explore.

There we have it. Slightly back to my indie/rock/blues safe place with these three choices but it’s just been one of those weeks! Until next time, take it steady!

A second coming
18 june 2007
Once the most dynamic live partnership in British music, the lives of William and Jim Reid - of the Jesus and Mary Chain - were a world apart. Former bandmate John Moore tracks the brothers down to see what brought them back together again
Jim Reid's barber suspects him of being a fantasist. During the small talk at his last two trims, he has claimed to be off to Palm Springs for the purpose of playing a rock festival, and to be heading to New York to appear on the Late Show with David Letterman. The barber in this south Devon village - who has had the pleasure of knowing his head for several uneventful years now - is taking it with a pinch of salt. "Made any records have you?" he asks, sceptically. "One or two," Jim replies.
Shaldon does not have rock stars. It has sleepy streets that do not cater for leather-clad wild men. But it is in this slumbering seaside community, that Jim Reid - hellraiser, drinker, swearer, beater over the head of people with microphone stands, instigator of riots, causer of strikes at pressing plants, and possessor of one of the greatest voices in pop music, has chosen to hide out.
Like a master criminal living incognito, he spends his days changing nappies, tending the garden, walking the cliff paths and pottering about in the shed. His wife Julie has banned him from playing guitar inside the house, because it wakes Candice - their two-month-old second daughter. They already have a three-year-old, Simone, who has informed her nursery teacher that, "Daddy is a singer and dancer".
Though an incongruous base for a man whose departure from north London led to profit warnings for several off-licence chains, it suits him well. He has not had a drink for two years, or taken any stimulant stronger than caffeine. Geographically, it fits the bill as well, being 5,000 miles away from brother William.
Having lain dormant for eight years - following 15 years of incendiary brilliance, madness, violence and enough fraternal conflict to make the Gallagher brothers seem like princes William and Harry, the two Reids are back in business. For how long is anybody's guess, but initial signs are good.
From the final blood-spattered onstage fight at Los Angeles' House of Blues - Phil Spector's pick-up joint of choice - to the Royal Festival Hall, where they headline the Meltdown festival this Friday, the Jesus and Mary Chain have had a good long rest, and returned as Elder Statesmen of Rock.
Against all odds, their comeback at the Coachella festival in California, was as near perfect as it's possible to get. Having already stolen the show, they brought out Scarlett Johansson to sing backing vocals on Just Like Honey, and in true Mary Chain style, did not even bother to introduce her.
Asking me to interview pop's answer to the Kray twins was a risky choice by the Guardian. I was once one of their henchmen you see, their drummer between 1985 and 1987, and know where the bodies are buried. The dangers of a Hello!-style love-in between old lags are manifest, but I shall try to retain some objectivity. I visited Jim at his delightful home and strolled his rolling lawns accompanied by Simone - resplendent in a pink diving mask and flippers - then spoke to William over the phone at his rock'n'roll dive off the Sunset Strip.
That the band fell apart so acrimoniously is not at all unusual in music. As Jim says: "It's like being locked in a cupboard with somebody for 15 years. If it wasn't your brother, you could kick them out." He also makes the point that were it not for the fact that they sprang from the same womb, the band would have collapsed far sooner.
William takes a similar line, talking about how unnatural it is for brothers to work together in a band. "Imagine trying to pick up girls in front of your little brother?" He says that he is only just getting over the trauma of walking into Jim's hotel room in Copenhagen during the early days of the band, to discover him sprawled out, naked, asleep with a girl. He recounts this story with relish - rather pleased that it will find its way into print. Both Reids have a great sense of humour when not trying to kill each other. William told Jim that the time for a comeback had to be now, as he worried that Jim might not keep his hair for much longer.
With new blood - Loz Colbert and Mark Crozier - the Mary Chain are reinvigorated. "No offence, John, but this is the best lineup we've ever had" says Jim, before attempting to punch me in the stomach. It's obvious that he is really enjoying himself, and that living a continent apart from William seems to be working.
The reasons for the reformation are complicated. Though not short of money and having turned down many previous requests, Jim says that the Coachella festival made them an offer they could not refuse. Personally, I think it is rather more involved than this. I always thought they would get back together - despite all of Jim's denials - and I firmly believe that, for most of their hiatus, both wanted to. However, as incredibly stubborn Scottish males, neither could make the first move.
Both are clearly delighted to be back together, as is their mother June and sister Linda, who have been flown out to see the gigs. Their father died last year, an event that triggered some serious thinking. The family have always been extremely close, and the realisation that their mother might need them to pull even closer together to help with the grief, put things in perspective.
The lure of a big payday gave them the perfect excuse to resume relations while saving face. Both could claim the pragmatism of a cheque with many zeros, while still maintaining a facade of mutual loathing should it prove necessary.
The whole enterprise almost came unstuck within seconds at the first rehearsal, as Jim (never quite as innocent as he makes out) said something that William misconstrued, and blows were a whisker away. Phil King - the long-standing bass player, witness to a thousand previous Reid-on-Reid explosions, and present at the final House of Blues brawl, could be forgiven at that moment for wishing Hadrian's Wall had been properly maintained over the years.
However, with the inevitable border skirmish out of the way, the band began to rediscover themselves. The songs sounded good, they enjoyed playing them and, as relations thawed, the reconciliation, still very much a work in progress, began to look possible after all. If they have not quite managed to wash all their dirty laundry - as evidenced by the state of Jim's shirt at Coachella - they have at least given it a good rinse.
After the split, William headed west to LA to live like a rock star while Jim boozed in Kentish Town for years - quite often with me, before sobering up and heading a little less further west. Both had children and got married. William got divorced. Both are doting fathers and would like their children to see them doing what they do best, while they still can.
When asked if he misses the UK, William tells me about something called a Slingbox, a device linked to his mother's TV set in East Kilbride, which enables him to watch all the British programmes, and best of all, change her channels from LA, which infuriates her, but also reminds her that she is not watching alone. As far as he is concerned, he is still in the UK - albeit with better weather and 24/7 home deliveries of whisky (which he wishes could be diet whisky). Unlike Jim, he has not yet taken the pledge. He is a little heavier these days, but in his nicely tailored jacket, looks good - rather like Pedro Almodóvar.
That the Jesus and Mary Chain have chosen Meltdown to return to active service in the UK is very appropriate. They share a week of concerts with Motorhead and the Stooges. Ears are going to bleed, trouble will be had, and just maybe ...
Asked if they predict a riot, William says how lovely it would be if there was, because he missed the legendary "North London Poly Riot" in 1985 - due to "being upstairs with a lady"- and Jim delights in the image of false teeth and walking sticks being hurled at the stage.
As I prepared to leave Jim's slice of God's own Devon, he presented me with a gift. Eight cans of Stella Artois, which had remained untouched in the freezer since sobriety took hold - their best-before date was June 2007. Though no longer a drinker, he insisted that they must be consumed. Anything else would be unthinkable. "It would break my heart to see good beers going to waste."
It was my intention to save these collector's items, or send them to the first people to write in. I still have some of the cans, but to make postage cheaper, I have drunk the lot.

Klaros: An Oracular Center of Apollo in Western Anatolia
by Gülşah Günata, ANAMED Post-Doctoral Fellow (2018–2019)
Tumblr media
In this blog entry I want to take you away from Istanbul to a beautiful western Anatolian archaeological site near Izmir: Klaros, where I have been working every summer since 2006.

Views from Klaros (photos: Klaros excavation archive)
The sanctuary of Apollo at Klaros is one of the most important oracular centers of the ancient Greek world, where people came to learn about the future and the will of the gods. The site is located within the Ahmetbeyli quarter of the Menderes district, Izmir province, to the south of Cumaovası, in the lower part of the Ahmetbeyli (ancient Ales) Valley, which connects the plain to the Bay of Kuşadası on the south.
Tumblr media

The sanctuary is now located 1.6 km inside the coast line. However, a recent geological study and a coring program in the area have shown that the prior coast line was well inside of today’s coast and formed a long bay at the end of the third millennium BC. The bay began to be filled with alluvium in the second millennium BC, and the sanctuary of Klaros was founded over a marshy area. Klaros had a harbor during its early period. Thukydides describes anchored vessels near Klaros in his account of the Peloponnesian War between the Athenians and Spartans (3.33). The coastline grew further away from Klaros over time due to the silting action of the Ahmetbeyli (Ales, Halysus) River, and its tributary streams, the Kırmızıkayalar and Beynamaz. Klaros stayed buried under thick alluvial deposits for centuries, waiting to be discovered.

Many travelers, starting with Richard Chandler in 1764, visited this area with the hope of finding the famous oracular center of Apollo. Francis V. J. Arundell in 1826, Charles Texier between 1833 and 1844, Carl Schuchhardt in 1886, and Theodor Macridy in 1904 tried to locate the sanctuary during their trips in Anatolia. Finally, T. Macridy was the one who discovered two columns and the inscribed ante walls of the ‘Propylon’, though he misinterpreted these architectural remains to be part of the temple of Apollo Klarios. Following this discovery, the first systematic investigation at Klaros started in 1913 by T. Macridy and Charles Picard. They revealed the entire ‘Propylon’ during this first excavation season and understood that this structure was not the temple of Apollo, but the entrance building of the sanctuary. They also uncovered the large ‘exedra’ on the east side of the ‘Propylon’ and numbers of inscriptions that were carrying the names of the delegates who came to the sanctuary for consultation mainly in the Late Hellenistic and Imperial period. Their research had to be ceased due to the start of the First World War in 1914. The second period of excavations in the sanctuary took place between 1950 and 1961, led by French epigrapher Louis Robert and his wife Jeanne Robert. Following them, another French scholar, Juliette de La Genière, led the work at Klaros from 1988 to 1997. The last excavation project in the sanctuary was started in 2001 by Nuran Şahin and is still continuing (see Şahin 2012 for detailed information on the research history at Klaros).
After giving a general brief information about the location, geography, and research history of the sanctuary I would like to take you further back to the mythical stories related to the foundation of Klaros.
Although we need to be cautious about accepting the truth of foundation legends, it is still important to consider what ancient authors claimed about the origins of the oracle and also the nearby cities. Pausanias says that “The people of Kolophon suppose that the sanctuary at Klaros, and the oracle, were founded in the remotest antiquity” (7.3.1). According to ancient texts, the establishment of the prophecy center of Apollo Klarios dates back to the 13th century BC (Paus. 7.3.1–2, 9.33.1; Apoll. Rhod. 1.308), which was the period of Achaean colonization of the Kolophonian land. Literary sources inform us that this region witnessed two overseas migrations consecutively in the Bronze Age. Pausanias points out that the locals of the region were Karians and the first migrants to the area had a Cretan origin (7.3.1): “They assert that while the Karians still held the land, the first Greeks to arrive were Cretans under Rhakios, who was followed by a great crowd also; these occupied the shore and were strong in ships, but the greater part of the country continued in the possession of the Karians.”
The second wave of migration to the Kolophonian land supposedly came from Greece (Sakellariou 1958, 345–346; Parke 1985, 119; Şahin 2007, 344). Pausanias informs us that the new arrivals were from the Theban community who had to leave their homeland after the Epigones conquered Thebes (Paus. 7.3.1–2). The captured Thebans were offered to Delphi as slaves. If we accept the accuracy of this story, the Mycenaean pottery found in the destruction level of the palace of Kadmos at Thebes might indicate that this incident took place around 1400–1300 BC (Sakellariou 1958, 347). The prophet of Apollo, Teiresias, and his daughter Manto were said to be among the slaves. Apollo ordered the Thebans to found a colony and Manto to establish a prophecy center in his name specifically in the Kolophonian land. Pausanias states that when Manto and the Theban immigrants arrived at Kolophon, Rhakios was still at war with the locals (Paus. 9.33.1–2). In his narration, Rhakios let the new arrivals settle down and married Manto. She then founded the prophecy center at Klaros following the order of the Delphic Apollo. According to some ancient authors, such as Apollonius of Rhodes, the sacred spring of Klaros was formed by the tears of Manto, who had been expatriated from her country (Apoll. Rhod. 1.308). Nikandros of Kolophon asserts that the name of the sanctuary comes from the Greek ‘kleros’ (κλῆρος), which means “share,” and says that Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades shared the universe here. Although the etymology of the prophecy center is disputable, it is the common opinion of ancient writers that its founder was Manto, and the date of the establishment occurred sometime before the Trojan War. Mopsos, the son of Manto and Rhakios, took over the kingship from his father and the task of prophecy from his mother. He was the first priest of Apollo and the king of Kolophonian land who drove the locals inland (Paus. 7.3.1).
After a long period of time, the land of Kolophon may have experienced another migration movement—the Ionian migration—according to the ancient authors. The seventh century BC elegiac poet Mimnermos describes the Pylians’ violent arrival on the Kolophonian coast (Mim. Frag. 9; Strabo 14.1.4): “We left the craggy city of Neleian Pylos, and came on ship to handsome Asia and lovely Kolophon our base. There we brashly mustered our immense army in dreadful pride, and set out along the river flowing inside the forest.” Even though the sanctuary at Klaros has revealed no evidence for the supposed Ionian migration to the land of Kolophon and no information has been found regarding the impact of any migration movements to the prophecy center yet, the recent excavations revealed evidence for the foundation of the sanctuary as early as the 13th century BC. However, due to the physical conditions of the sanctuary it has not been possible to reach the probable Minoan (the first immigrants according to the legends) levels at Klaros. The underground springs and the high level of basement water had been an overwhelming problem for the ancient residents of the sanctuary, and it still causes difficulties for the excavations. We can only say that we have evidence for activity in the sanctuary as early as the 13th century BC.
The earliest architectural remains of cult activity in the sanctuary is the circular altar of Apollo. Material, mainly ceramics, from the circular altar indicates activity during the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age transition period. Numerous animal bones with burnt marks, terracotta bull figurines in various sizes, and ash deposits were found in the area of the circular altar together with Protogeometric and Geometric pottery sherds and material artifacts.
The Archaic period at Klaros shows a change in cult activities with an increase in votive offerings and the emergence of the first temples of Apollo, Artemis, and Leto. Beside the temples a larger rectangular altar for Apollo was built over the earlier circular one, and two smaller altars were erected for Artemis and Leto to the north and the south respectively. This is the period of new trend in building monumental structures in sanctuaries in the Greek world, and Klaros was no different.
The Classical period of the sanctuary reflects the political situation and events in the Greek world. The Persian attacks had an effect on religious places as in all other aspects of life in western Anatolia and the Greek mainland (see Miller 1999). The Archaic structures continued being used for religious rituals in this period and no construction of a new structure seems to have taken place in the sanctuary, except some necessary architectural renovations. The architectural evidence suggests an interruption or recession in the cult, and the decrease in the amount of Classical material supports the argument of a hiatus at Klaros in the fifth century BC due to the Persian attacks.
Following Alexander the Great’s defeat of the Persians, Klaros became famous in the Greek world as an oracular center. Pausanias narrates Alexander’s dream about moving Smyrna to a new spot and sending ambassadors to consult Apollo at Klaros (7.5.1–2): “It is said that Alexander was hunting on Mount Pagos, and that after the hunt was over he came to a sanctuary of the Nemeses, and found there a spring, and a plane-tree in front of the sanctuary, growing over the water. While he slept under the plane-tree, it is said that the Nemeses appeared and bade him found a city there, and to remove into it the Smyrnaeans from the old city. So, the Smyrnaeans sent ambassadors to Klaros to make inquiries about the circumstance, and the god made answer: Thrice, yes for times blest will those men be who shall dwell in Pagos beyond the sacred Meles.”
After the death of Alexander the Great, the sanctuary underwent two extensive construction projects during the rules of Antigonos Monophthalmos (“the one eyed”) in 311–306 BC, and Attalos I in the third century BC, which continued until the end of the life of the sanctuary in the fourth century AD. The construction of the Hellenistic temples of Apollo and Artemis, the altars, the ‘exedrai’, the ‘propoylon’, the honorific monuments, and the hecatomb, which all can be seen at the site today, was started during this period. The Apollo temple was never completed, probably because of its largeness. The cult statues of the Triad—Apollo, Artemis, and Leto—were also erected in the Hellenistic period and are still standing today.

Press Release:
Hauser & Wirth is pleased to present Jack Whitten’s first-ever solo exhibition in London and the gallery’s inaugural project with the artist in the United Kingdom. Whitten is an American abstract painter celebrated for his innovative transfiguration of paint in works equally alert to materiality, politics and metaphysics. Mentored by both Willem de Kooning and Norman Lewis, with a career spanning five decades Whitten holds a unique place in the narrative of postwar American art. Curated by Richard Shiff, this presentation has a historical focus, bringing together a large number of Whitten’s paintings from 1979 to 1989. These years marked a period of intense experimentation for the artist and reflect his intellectual engagement with contemporary changes in science and technology. Whitten’s work is a focus of ‘Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power’, on view at Tate Modern until 22 October 2017.
Whitten’s diverse practice bridges gestural abstraction and process art. He experiments ceaselessly to arrive at a nuanced language of painting that hovers between mechanical automation and spiritual expression. The common denominators across the many phases of Whitten’s artistic practice – which he describes as ‘conceptual’ – are zealous technical exploration and a mastery of abstraction’s potential to map geographic, social, and psychological locations, particularly within the African-American experience. To account for his experimental attitude to materials, Whitten recalls his time as a pre-medical student at Tuskegee Institute (today Tuskegee University) in the 1950s. He once said, ‘[It was] an all-black college where the African-American scientist George Washington Carver did all his experiments. His laboratory is still intact. He was also a painter. I’m convinced today that a lot of my attitudes toward painting and making, and experimentation came from George Washington Carver. He made his own pigments, his own paints, from his inventions with peanuts. The obsession with invention and discovery impressed me’.
Uniting Whitten’s work from the period 1979 – 1989 is a process analogous to electronic imaging and photography. Inspired by photographic technology of the time – cathode-ray scanning, radar, electron microscopy – he conceived of his painting as a process of transmission, channelling the subjective qualities of a person, spirit or sense of time and place, through a coded repeatable unit. Hence, we see the dedication of certain works to notable figures, such as novelist James Baldwin and artists Norman Lewis or Andy Warhol. Whitten articulates his approach to abstraction in photographic terms, saying, ‘I maintain that abstraction is a symbol. It’s very much like holding a camera. I can direct it toward any symbol that I choose. As a painter, I have to locate that symbol in the paint, as opposed to giving an illustrated narrative. The narrative content and the figure are still in there – they’re built into the paint’.
In 1980 a fire devastated Whitten’s studio, resulting in a three-year hiatus in his practice. In 1983 The Studio Museum in Harlem, organised the exhibition, ‘Jack Whitten: Ten Years, 1970 – 1980’ curated by long-time champion of the artist, Henry Geldzahler. With the prospect of a new show, and aided by Geldzahler’s curatorial reflection, Whitten’s return to the studio ushered in a prolific new phase of painting – he returned to the gesture of the hand, working with small, self-designed tools and reintroducing the paintbrush. He began by developing a series of circular oil and acrylic reliefs that call to mind systems of celestial navigation. Using a trammel head, Whitten incised arcs, lines and concentric circles into quarter-inch-thick acrylic planes. The dashed lines reveal buried layers of primary colour underneath a large swathe of black or grey, as if to offer a glimmer of a hidden cosmos. The artist describes these works, including ‘Annabelle II’ and ‘To My Valentine’ (both 1984), as ‘just explosive – geometry and a lot of gesture’.
1985 saw the artist introduce wire mesh netting as a tool, using it to create a grid on wet acrylic. Each small square is coloured individually, creating a canvas that flickers like a distant metropolis. Its pixel-like elements derive from grids designed for electronic scanning. The artist would return to a similar use of units of colour in the late 2000s with a series titled E-Stamp.
Whitten refers to his DNA paintings as having ‘a unified surface that opens to multi-dimension’, which seems to describe a raster (a pattern of parallel scanning lines followed by the electron beam on a television screen or computer monitor). Curator Richard Shiff explains the artist’s process for this series saying, ‘like a light-sensitive photographic film, a pictorial raster awaits its activation, as if differentiated tonalities might be projected from within the surface as much as from without. Whitten generated a raster by applying a grey slip over existing abstract imagery and then raking the slip in a horizontal direction to create a set of lines that, from above, ‘developed’ the image below. He repeated this process vertically to complete the grid. The grid of parallel lines connotes the raster of an electronic imaging system; in contrast, the scattering of variant greys beneath the lines resembles the irregular distribution of tone in the emulsion of analog photography’. The raster and image compete for visual attention as one and the same surface, resulting in a painting with strong photographic depth. In ‘DNA III’, ‘DNA X’ and ‘DNA XII’ (all 1979) it is as if a layer of netting obscures a blurred vista beyond.
Also during this period, Whitten first conceived of the surface of his painting as ‘skin’, associating the incisions and marks with keloids (scarring after skin is cut). Whitten would apply the concept of ‘painting as skin’ to objects, and he developed a series of collage-like reliefs from acrylic castings of objects and surfaces he scavenged from around the city – using plaster of Paris he would take moulds from man-hole covers, car tires, and walls that were later cast in acrylic paint. Titled ‘site paintings’, for Whitten these works are complex topographical maps of the urban landscape. The matrix of lines and shapes incorporate, and figuratively recover, lived experiences and histories of the urban environment. In works such as ‘Site I’ (1986) and ‘Site IV’ (1986), the mottled texture and monochromatic colour palette create the illusion of shifting planar space and set the relief surface in motion. The brightly coloured, vibrant works ‘Ode To Andy: For Andy Warhol’ (1986) and ‘Willi Meets The Keeper (For Willi Smith)’ (1987) illustrate an evolution with this technique. Here the castings are layered and set amongst other fragments of cured, acrylic paint that function as a dry palette, and the cast forms lean towards abstraction. Recalling this technique Whitten says ‘I’m dealing now with paint as a collage, paint as sculpture… I don’t paint a painting, I make a painting’.
Animism is founded on the belief that a supernatural power organises and animates the material universe – the Spirit needs Matter to manifest itself, whether that be in nature, flesh or art. Whitten grew up within the Black Fundamentalist Church where animist religious beliefs were not a formalised system of belief condoned by the Church. However, being sensitive to spiritual vibrations, he absorbed the animist presence of spirit as a fact of being. When speaking on this subject in 1998, Whitten said, ‘We are familiar with things being either / or, abstract or representational, but there is a third order out there… an image comes out of matter… I’m aware of something being caught in that matter… There is a relation here when I speak of spirit and matter… it is possible to direct something into that matter’. In the Site works, paint becomes light and matter in one – the low reliefs capture more light than a flat surface, conveying a unique sense of place. By building and embellishing the surface of the canvas he gave the form of low sculpture relief to the animist principle. This is in contrast to the artist’s earlier paintings for which he pushed aside layers of paint to release streams of light and energy seemingly trapped beneath the surface. Whitten’s interpretation of animism is at the heart of his contribution to post-war contemporary art – he extended the vocabulary of modernist abstraction to include a deeper, more spiritual experience of contemporary life.
About the artist Jack Whitten’s work has been the subject of numerous solo museum exhibitions, including the major travelling show ‘Jack Whitten. Five Decades of Painting’, organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego CA (2014); ‘Jack Whitten. Erasures’, SCAD Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah GA (2012); ‘Jack Whitten’, MoMa PS1, Long Island City NY (2007); ‘Jack Whitten. Ten Years, 1970 – 1980’, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Harlem NY (1983); and ‘Jack Whitten. Paintings’, Whitney Museum of America Art, New York NY (1974).
His work is included in prestigious public and private collections around the globe, including the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; and Tate, London, England.
Whitten has received numerous grants and fellowships throughout his career, including the John Hay Whitney Fellowship (1964), Individual Artist’s Fellowship from the National Endowments for the Arts (1973), and the Guggenheim Fellowship (1976). In 2014 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the San Francisco Art Institute. Brandeis University awarded Whitten an Honorary Doctorate in May 2016 and in September of the same year he received the 2015 National Medal of Arts in recognition of his major contribution to the cultural legacy of the US.
