Chapter Ten: Villains

Many things had happened to Adrien over the course of his life. He’d been a superhero, his father had been his arch nemesis, he’d been Chris Hemsworth’s butt…however, he’d never been run out on, by anyone other than Marinette Dupain-Cheng.

“Well, that could have gone better,” Plagg snorted, throwing a triangle of cheese in the air and swallowing it whole.

“I know she doesn’t like me that way, but to run out on me without taking anything with her? I’m just a little…confused.”

Tikki circled around him, after watching out the window. “She’s running towards the river. How far do you think she’ll go before noticing she hasn’t got me or her phone?”

Adrien shrugged, perplexed by, well…everything. “She didn’t listen to a word I said, did she?”

Plagg shook his head. “Couldn't have. I thought she would have threatened you, or called you a stupid cat or something. This was most definitely different.”

“Should I go after her?”

Tikki looked between them and the window, and back again. “Maybe? I suppose it wouldn’t do any harm if you did.”

With a sigh, Adrien grabbed her bag from where she’d left it dumped on his sofa, and opened it, allowing both kwamis to make their way in. Speedily heading to the staircase and making his way down, he checked inside Marinette’s bag, making sure Plagg and Tikki were okay and her phone was in there. Her phone which once again was lighting up more than a Disney firework display.

“Should I transform?” he asked, pulling his baseball cap down a little further and praying he could get to her without the continued chaos of what had happened at the university.

“It might save some time,” Tikki agreed.

“Where do you think she’s going?” Plagg asked curiously.

I agree so much with your Adrinette post. Unlike a lot of the fandom, I've always been a fan of both Adrien and Marinette so it hurts twice as much to see what the writing has done to them. How did their huge moments get switched up?! She was supposed to be the confesser. I cheered her on for 4 seasons that she would finally confess. Then when the time comes, Adrien does all the cute and risky confession stuff that she was supposed to do. Like what? It might have made her life easier if she were a real person, but as a character? The writers just took away a HUGE character moment from her. A huge triumph everyone wanted. Just gone. After 5 seasons. It makes her less compelling as a character to not have that.

They gave the responsibility for that to Adrien and gave the responsibility of facing Gabriel Agreste and talking to him about Emilie to Ladybug?! Maybe someone wrote the character growth fulfillments on a sticky note and it smudged and they got them mixed up? I think Ladybug should have been there to face MONARCH, but the Gabriel Agreste moments and discovery should have went to Adrien. It theoretically makes his life "easier", I mean in the sense the show is going to position it as. I'd love if they tackled the reprecussions of this, but my money is on them letting that whole senti thing fade into the background never to come up again and he will just live happily in his bubble thinking his dad is a hero forever. But as a character, that just like flatlined him. He is 80 percent less compelling now. His moment. Gone. After 5 seasons. Possibly never to be spoken of again or revealed. Sad.

I don't understand Season 5's thing with not challenging the characters where it counts the most. Neither of them grew. They both did a lot... for each other's plot points. Adrien worked and adjusted his approach to woo Marinette, but that wasn't a character growth moment for HIM because he's always been that way. There was no big anxiety hill to get over there or big change for him. He's always worn his feelings on his sleeve and been kind as Adrien. No internal conflict besides "I want to be with my girlfriend." Marinette stood up to Gabriel FOR Adrien and faced him in the end, but again. Not a strong character growth moment for her considering she has no emotional tie to Gabriel Agreste. There's no internal conflict there besides "He's keeping me from my boyfriend." There's not even the triumph of her beating Monarch because he kind of... wins?

Because neither of them actually confront their assumed assigned character challenges, they both come off extremely uninteresting to me by the end of the season. I can't even agree that Ladybug's character is benefiting here. I am not happy as a fan of either. They didn't allow her any true character building triumphs that she should have as the protagonist. While robbing Adrien of his character arc and keeping him unchanged and blissfully ignorant in his bubble.

I honestly have nothing more to add, because you nailed it anon. Your observation about them completing each other's character arcs is so spot on. You're also completely right about the fact that they are going to breeze over the implications of Adrien being a Sentimonster. The one thing I will clarify is that when I say Marinette benefits from the writing, I mean that at least she gets to do something and has some kind of agency and choices outside of being someone else's prop, whereas Adrien gets none of that. But you've honestly said everything so perfectly and I couldn't agree more.

Whatever happens between Adrinette in Multiplication, I just want Marinette to wake up every morning with a reminder that she made Adrien fall in love not because of her complicated plans to get him, but because she was his friend. Her best and biggest traits won. She won. She didn't have to compete, she had no reason to, he's grateful for her support. He cares about her. Even if this isn't "love" love she'll always know that the reason why she got his attention was because she listened and she was there for him and making him laugh at times, when he was most vulnerable. He was so close to understand the feelings he has for her and she pushed him over the edge when she wasn't even trying to. She didn't need to do anything else, just be herself - his friend, Marinette Dupain-Cheng. If this is not a great message for viewers and a big reason for Marinette to be more confident in herself, I don't know what is.

You're forever his everyday Ladybug. You've come so far. I'm proud of you, kiddo 🐞❤️

augh cap I fucking love how you wrote adrigami in this, like I’m sorry but they way both of them are obsessed with Juleka and Luka is so silly. I just finished the Frozer chapter and omfg style queen is next… (I repeat: how you wrote Alix and Chloe’s akumatisation in OM will forever be one of my favourite Akumas and chapters ever. You write Audrey so well I wish I could punch her) anyway, the dynamics in Frozer are so interesting, adrinette BROtp is so real and I love it. Panthera being like “I have a plan” and that plan is just hitting people really hard… love her.

Juleka and Marinette bonding in civilian form is always fun to see, I do find how Juleka idolises ladybug, and marinette obviously, to be fascinating because like. Yes objectively she is the one who can fix everything and that’s important. But like. Augh I do like how it’s complicated fr.

also I do have an actual question which isn’t just me waxing poetic (rather unpoetically but you get me) about much I love PN: are you planning to write the episode where they switch miraculous? If so, how? Because it was Reflecta Two or whatever, and obviously Juleka can’t get transformed… obviously don’t say anything that veers off into bigger spoiler territory I’ve just been curious about this for a while :))

Juleka and Marinette's relationship.. their dynamic.. the power dynamic is very tipped in Marinette's favor due to Juleka's admiration and purposeful decision to follow Marinette's lead 90% of the time. It's very fun to write.

This idea is half-baked, and I'm still not fully awake, so take that for what it's worth, but I feel like the pushback against canon Adrinette stems in part from people's attitudes toward teen love in general. A lot of adults view teenage love as ephemeral, silly, meaningless, dramatic. It's seen as being unrealistic, idealized, destined to fail, and people don't take teens seriously when they say they're in love and want to be together forever. It's this sarcastic attitude of "I give them two weeks before they break up" simply because of their age. Adults have a way of delegitimizing young people's feelings as being shallow when compared to adult love. Which, can sometimes be true, but I think anything that makes someone feel something is meaningful, no matter how silly it can be perceived as.

It reminds me of the concept that young children cry when they fall down or bonk their heads because they don't have the life experience to relate back to. At that point in time, that is the worst thing that's ever happened to them. They have no other frame of reference, but does that make their pain less legitimate? For most teens, breaking up with a first love is the most pain they've ever been in emotionally. Will they eventually grow and learn? Sure. But that doesn't make it less painful in the moment. Future worse pain doesn't do anything to dull present pain. Stubbing my toe doesn't become less painful just because I might break my arm later.

A lot of the arguments I've seen people make against Adrinette come off as that same sarcastic, condescending attitude people take when real teens couple up. "It's not real love" "they're going to break up in two weeks" "their feelings are superficial, it will never last" "why don't you date this other guy, he's much better for you." And like, to me, it just comes off a bunch of jaded asshole adults sticking their noses up at kids for the crime of *checks notes* "having feelings." Just because they don't see it as being real or meaningful. At what point do we stop treating people's feelings, regardless of their age, as being silly, shallow, and unimportant? Because it actually happens in all walks of life. Kids crying over bumping their head? Eh, it's just a bump, quit crying. A teen girl crying bc her first boyfriend dumped her? What did she expect? He's a dumb teenager who could only ever break her heart. A young adult loses their job? Should have worked harder. A middle-aged adult mourns their youth? Grow up. An old woman regrets not doing more in her younger years? Too late now.

There is always someone older with more life experience to tell people their experiences mean nothing because it only gets worse. But like damn, Adrien and Marinette have both been through so much in their young lives. Can they kiss each other and feel happy and safe for five damn minutes without some assholes telling them they're doing it wrong? Sheesh.

Adrien feels completely heartbroken after the forced separation from Marinette. But even in those darker times, there's still some hope left.

A one-shot loosely based on that one Adrinette scene in Revolution.

This fic is also partially inspired by the song "C'est fini" by Joe Dassin.

Never again.

It was over.

Never again would he feel her warm hand in his.

Never again would her sky-blue eyes look at him with love and adoration.

Never again would his fingers run through her shiny black locks.

Was there any way to soothe his aching heart? to chill this burning pain in his chest?

She was torn away from him, and it was so painful, as if a part of his body were torn apart.

There was no remedy for it. No comfort. No possible consolation. No excuse for those who separated them. The tears that he shed so profusely while on the plane have dried up by now. They didn't help.

He still felt the warmth of her lips on his. Her hands cradling his face so dearly. The desperate clenching of her hands latching on to his fingers. The sound of her voice calling him by his name. Her scent.

He could still see that terrified look in her eyes as she was pulled away from him.

And her white dress.

She was absolutely stunning in that dress. He couldn’t shake off the feeling that it was a wedding dress and that by showing up in that dress and kissing him in front of others, she somehow became his wife.

He wanted to memorise these moments so badly, to imprint every second of their last minutes together on his heart forever.

He should never forget how it felt to be with her and to be loved by her. Because no one will ever love him like she did. No one would ever make him feel like she did. Even when everything else fades away from his memory, even when he forgets her name, her features, and the colour of her eyes, this feeling will remain.

Never again will he fall in love with someone else. Never in his life would he want another lover. His heart won't belong to someone else. It's hers—forever.

He always wanted to be loved unconditionally. And the moment he got that kind of love, it was taken away from him in such a cruel way.

His father was a monster. There was no denying it anymore. That sadistic grin on his face when he told him about his upcoming departure for London will probably haunt him forever. How could he have been so cruel that he enjoyed his son’s heartbreak?

He said the other day that they were waiting for the perfect moment to kiss. How ironic that that moment was a moment of their separation. The kiss they both longed for became their farewell to each other.

And now here he was, sitting on the hotel bed in London. The sky was still blue, just like her eyes, and the sun was still shining, just like her eyes used to shine every time he told her how much he loved her. But she wasn't by his side.

He could be saying "I love you" over and over again. There wouldn't be any response. But he kept saying this regardless, as though it were a spell or a prayer.

By some gut feeling that only sweethearts seem to have, he knew that somewhere in Paris she kept saying that exact thing, hoping that her words would get through to him.

The way she loved him was really fascinating. No matter how off-putting her first impression of him was, no matter how uncomfortable she used to feel around him, no matter how heartbroken she might have felt when he started dating Kagami, she still loved him, even though he felt himself unworthy of her love. She supported him through thick and thin. She openly defied his father. She vowed not to ever abandon him.

And in a way, she didn’t. Yes, she wasn't there right now, yet all the love she gave him was still there, like a lifeline.

He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out her lucky charm bracelet. Her gift to him. The only evidence he had left that his love story wasn't a dream.

Now it has acquired a completely new meaning. Now it was a vow of her undying love, a promise that they would survive against all odds, as if it were her begging him not to give up, not to succumb to despair.

He squeezed the lucky charm. He must hold on. Their love must be stronger than the malicious people out there trying to separate them. They are fools, these people. They failed. They should've known that the two of them are inseparable because they love each other.

‘So, Adrien,’ her father said between bites. ‘You’re a model?’

‘Mm-hm.’

‘How’d you get into that?’

‘Oh, I didn’t have a choice. It’s Father’s business, see, and I basically do what I’m told.’ He spat out this information with an unnerving lack of emotion.

‘Is it…what you plan to do forever?’

Adrien frowned, letting his fork dangle in the air. ‘Forever is such a long time, don’t you think? I don’t want to do anything for that long.’

Her father smiled again. ‘How about when you turn eighteen?’

Adrien chewed in thought, then said, ‘I have no idea. To be honest…people don’t usually ask what I want.’ As he took another bite, she realised he was studying her father’s face the way he did when he was trying to work out if he’d said the right thing or not. ‘Er…sorry if that’s not an answer you like to hear.’

Her father shook his head and cleared his throat. ‘No, no. You’re only…fourteen?’

Adrien nodded. ‘Fifteen in December.’

‘Plenty of time.’ He gestured at his daughter. ‘Not everyone is like Marinette, here – she was sure that she wanted to work with clothing as young as four years old. She used to dress up in this old blanket her nona knitted for her and prance around the house, insisting that everyone call her the Knitting F – ’

‘Okay, Papa, that’s enough of that!’ Marinette cried, putting up her hands in alarm. ‘Adrien doesn’t want to hear about that.’

Adrien beamed. ‘Of course I do!’ He turned back to her father. ‘The Knitting what?’

‘Fairy,’ her father supplied.

Marinette dropped her head into her hands.

‘That’s fantastic,’ she heard Adrien say at her side. ‘I wish I felt that passionate about…anything, really. I must sound really unmotivated, but it’s not true. I’m always searching for that thing that sparks me up. Something to fall in love with and never stop falling, so I can never get enough of it. I really admire people who find it.’

Marinette slowly lifted her head and dared to look at him. Where did I find this boy?

From worst to best (or in your case, least awful), how would you rank all the sides of the Love Square?

Thanks for the ask, anon! So I do have to preface this with a couple things 😅 first is that I haven't seen all of season 4 (I think I left off with the two finale episodes left, just haven't picked it back up) and I haven't seen any of season 5.

Second is that I do on some level still ship Love Square 💖 it's what drew me to the show and some aspects of it still make me happy, which is the main thing for me. I ship them on the belief that they'll probably date when they're young, but it won't be forever, as I personally think there are a lot of issues that would need to be resolved first before they can work as a couple long-term.

That being said, my personal ranking from worst to best (also keeping in mind they're all the same people and so it's all the same ship, this is just what makes me happiest) is under the cut!

Ladrien. Now, okay, hear me out. I know this side of the ship is so underrated and has so much to offer (the spiderbug kiss fanart I've seen of this side? Omg unbelievable 💖) but when asked to rank the sides, Ladrien always falls here for me. Not necessarily because it's my least favorite, but more because I get more happy vibes from the other sides and like I said before, that's the main thing I care about.

Adrinette. Adrinette is cute, you know, but there's still a lot of secondhand embarrassment surrounding it (at least in the first few seasons) that makes it hard for me to get behind it. But! In fanon? Post-reveal pre-relationship Adrinette is *chef's kiss*

Ladynoir. Battle partners, best friends, us against the world, all that 💖 also great as a platonic pairing, and I love playing with that in my fics, too.

Marichat. I love this ship in all its forms, but especially as completely platonic best friends. There's something about these two getting to hang out together with no pressure that just plain makes me happy to see it.

“But neither beat Hemsworth!”

“What started this conversation again?” Marinette looked quizzically between Alya and Anthony, before grabbing a hand of popcorn and shoving it into her mouth.

After the date - which wouldn’t be out of place on an episode of Punk’d - Marinette had called in her besties (well, two out of the three) to come and help her forget her mortification. Would it be unethical to give up the Miracle Box just to gain amnesia and forget about tonight?

“Just look at his butt, Marinette! No one can come close to that,” Anthony said, dramatically pointing at the screen. Oh yes! When you’ve had a bad date, nothing beats the scene in Thor: Love and Thunder when Thor’s clothes get ripped off – and reveal something that isn’t exactly Chris Hemsworth. Cue the drool!

“If that actually is his butt!” Her hands shot up to cover her mouth, Alya not missing a beat to jump on what she’d just said.

“Hold up!” She snorted. “Are you telling me that butt is our very own Buttercup?”

With her hands remaining over her mouth, Marinette shook her head aggressively side to side. She watched Anthony pause the screen and then stand up, walking towards it and tilting his head to the side. “That’s Adrien’s butt? How did I not know! I look at it enough.”

Yep, she was going to relinquish the box and forget about this day. Could it actually get any worse?

The irony that you -i think- got an ask a while ago about the parallel between Adrinette and bellarke only for the show to do a parallel of the mount weather arc 😯

And I can so see what you're saying with the Mt Weather thing after watching Multiplication. We got a little of that last season with early season 4 Marinette being all "love is weakness i cannot have friends or boyfriends i am going to be Ladybug forever NO FRIENDS"

But now we're getting the super fun other side of the Mt Weather arc which is Marinette going "Oh jeez i care about this person so much that I cannot get close to them to protect them. in fact i have to shut them out to save them and myself from hurt."

I've always thought that Bellarke mainly mirrored Ladynoir of the 4 sides of the love square, but it's so fun to see a little parallel of Bellarke to Adrienette.

You know, as someone who fav side is adrinette i'm really happy that they're getting canon pre-reveal. However, some things just rub me in the wrong way, because the decreasing moments on other LS sides that saddened me a little. Like, adrinette is my fav side in the LS but i'm a love square stan, so i kinda wished all four of them that get mutual romantic feelings. This leads to a lot of people who started to think that Adrien's feelings for Ladybug isn't real or just a "celebrity crush" or he didn't love her "true selves" until he realize he has feelings for Marinette and I hate that statement so much. Just because he's with Marinette now that doesn't mean his feelings for Ladybug just automatically gone like that..

But I would argue that things haven't changed *that* much. Ladrien and MC always had very sparce representation since s1. They are the smaller sides of the LS. The most attention was always given to Adrinette and LN, so it was always going to be one of those sides. We've had numerous episodes about why romantic LN doesn't work pre reveal bc Gabriel is a skid mark of a human being who does not care about his son's happiness at all. We see that in s5 as well through Adrinette.

If I'm being perfectly honest, I think saying that the other sides are only getting reduced time this season only is dramatic. As I said, Ladrien and MC always got the short end of the stick. And you could argue MC has gotten its normal amount of content this season. They always get an episode a season. Ladrien hasn't had a designated episode since s3, so it not having much isn't new to this season, nor is it the fault of Adrinette being together. (The writers just know they're too powerful so they have to nerf them) LN has only slightly reduced screen time in comparison to previous seasons. Seriously, people are blowing it way out of proportion. Like if we were to graph the attention given to each side from s1-4 you'd probably end up with 55% LN, 40% Adrinette, then 5% split between MC and Ladrien. Obviously it's not an exact measurement, I'm not going to go count every second of screentime and make a number accurate graph, but in s5 it's more like 55% Adrinette, 40% LN, 4.5% MC and .5% Ladrien. LN hasn't lost that much screen time, in fact they pretty much just swapped with Adrinette. They still get a lot, seriously people forgot about the first half of this season that still focused on them quite a bit. They still have had some good moments together. People are just mad they've moved on with each other I might add. No one batted an eye for the last 4 seasons or claimed it wasn't fair to Adrinette to get less screen time than LN.

It's been like 10 episodes since Adrinette officially got together. Not to mention, it would be kinda weird if they didn't pay attention to it or give it more focus than the other sides right now seeing as they are together. 🤨 This is the season that finally progressed something with their relationship. Things weren't going to stay the same forever, and honestly, people were complaining the entire time they weren't together too bc everyone wanted something to happen. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. People weren't happy either way, and truthfully, I don't think they ever will be. 🤷‍♀️

As for shit people say about Ladrien, all of that is not new nor exclusive to what is happening this season. They've said that since s1, so it has nothing to do with Adrinette being canon. I recommend you just block people that are stupid and who say stupid things 😂
