i want to ask about Cayde's dynamic with andal!!! like, how to portray their relationship and maybe cayde's general psyche when it comes to people and forming bonds.

It's… complicated, I'm never sure how to describe characters' relationships with words. I know it sounds incredibly cheesy, but to me Andal and Cayde are two halves of a whole, one feels incomplete without the other. Even if we're talking about them being just friends, they're the type who always show up everywhere together and if for some reason they aren't, they'll be texting each other non-stop still. "We're two halves of a whole idiot" - that's literally them.

You could say that they knew and understood each other perfectly, but I feel like while it's true in general everyday scenarios, on a grander scale Andal always had an upper hand in that. He knew Cayde like the back of his hand, he trusted him and believed in him far more than Cayde ever thought of himself. Cayde however wasn't exactly that sharp when it came to serious things about which Andal avoided speaking head-on - like, Cayde couldn't understand why Andal takes his Vanguard duty so seriously. It was only after he spent years as the Hunter Vanguard himself that he started to get what Andal must've felt. I don't think it's Cayde's fault or something though - Andal most likely barely ever talked about that, and he himself didn't exactly need people talking about their feelings to understand them.

I think it's safe to say, judging by how everyone speak of him and the leadership positions he seemingly effortlessly always ended up in, that Andal just gets people, he understands them extremely well and can find a common language with just about anyone. He was the one who made "significant progress in faction accords". What kind of person you must be to make faction leaders come to an agreement, at that time especially??? Convincing, sharp and charming sounds like an understatement alksdhfkjaks

So, I think it was that quality that helped Andal almost immediately see right through all of Cayde's clowney facades. And his own kindness and honesty pretty much left Cayde totally disarmed. Andal got to know him - the real him - and loved him, thought of him as his best friend. And made damn sure Cayde was aware of that as well. That's actually so, so incredibly important - because with the way Cayde is, he constantly thinks that deep down people surrounding him either dislike him or are disappointed in him. No matter how much time they spend together, it's not something he himself will just get one day because "well it's OBVIOUS" or something. His relationship with Ikora and Zavala are probably the most striking example of that. Ikora says he was one of her closest friends - Cayde says he's not sure if Ikora even likes him. The City is flooded with Cabal, lightless Guardians scattered all over the system, humanity is in shambles - and Cayde is genuinely surprised Zavala is looking for him and needs him. He leaves messages for both of them in case they kill him, making it sound like he wouldn't be surprised at all if they did. That… really shows the abysmal gap of misunderstanding between them, to put it lightly.

But Andal! Cayde never once doubted Andal and Andal's feelings for him. The good old days he speaks so fondly of is the time when he ran around the Solar system with Andal and their pack. Even if he sometimes laments that Andal is too serious and bad with jokes, that seriousness and honesty is actually just another proof that if Andal says so, then he really does like him and is impressed by whatever Cayde wanted to impress him with this time. 

I think it's probably one of, if not the most important part of what made Andal so incredibly special to Cayde - that freedom of being able to be equally honest with him, be real. Goofing off because he simply wants to goof off - not because he prefers to give people lower standards so that they won't be disappointed in him when he fails. Sharing his muddy concerns and fears that he barely even can put into words, knowing it won't be laughed at or brushed off as unimportant. Absolutely everything got better instantly if they were in it together. The mere presence of one of them in close proximity immediately cheered the other up.

I don't know, I can talk about them for hours and still not say what I wanted to say. I always miss the most important stuff somehow, no matter how many words I pour in. Honestly, I think that to better understand what was happening between them, all you have to do is to (re)read "The Man They Call Cayde" - literally half of it is basically Cayde's love letter to Andal.

there's a lot of reasons more people aren't into yuri that are troubling to consider, but equally, I genuinely think it cannot be understated how much of it comes down to most yuri being boring as hell. Don't get me wrong, Yuri has grown a LOT in that time, to the point that most people today wouldn't even understand a Maria-sama reference if it were dropped in front of them (thank God). It's expanded and evolved to encompass more stories about adult women, wider varieties of scenarios, a greater acknowledgement of real life lesbianism, and is more comfortable showing girls kissing with tongue and having sex.

Yuri Manga is maybe the best is it's ever been, and it's also getting the widest readership it's ever had in the English speaking world. The titles we carry at work are always on back order with long queues, and, when I've asked them, most weebs of all gender or sexualities report keeping up with at least a few Yuri series.

At large though? Most of it is still really boring. That's not a bad thing necessarily. I like it because it goes down easy. For the most part any series you pick is gonna be pretty chill. Even shit from Sal Jiang which is PRETTY EDGY for yuri is a pretty breezy read. More serious ones like How Do We Relationship? cover some pretty real subjects about how intimacy is actually quite difficult even when both of you love each other, but it's not like... Exciting. Yuri isn't where you go to pump your fist or get perched on the edge of your seat.

So when the comparison is made to yaoi, well, I mean, have you READ any yaoi? Even in some of the more restrained titles those boys are likely to be sucking and fucking balls and all within the first volume or two. There's gonna be drama, intrigue, shit is gonna get messy, passions are gonna get heated, clothes are gonna be ripped off, people are gonna get sold to One Direction, it's stuff you can sit down with a bowl of popcorn with you know? Stuff you can message your friend and gush Hey Can You BELIEVE? A lot of it is pretty trashy, but that's the appeal. The generic state of yaoi is torrid and exciting and sexy. Ultimately, as a species many of us like to see pretty people fuck. In yaoi you'll get that. In yuri you won't. Nothing wrong with that, but it is gonna be a major contributing factor to their relative popularity.

It's also worth making the comparison to hetero romance manga, which has undergone a renaissance of it's own in recent years. There's now a whole meta around crafting a handful of mean shitty grouchy dysfunctional bully women and flinging them at the protagonist of the day who, unlike in years past, may actually have a face and personality. Most of these are also very trashy and truly scrape the bottom of the bucket in terms of writing.

AND YET?

I would bet money on the fact that you'll have heard of these women and probably even have a good idea what they're like without ever having touched a page of their manga.

I'm sorry but the straights are whipping donuts around the yuri girls in terms of delivering a wide variety of weird compelling fucked up women. How many yuri leading ladies by comparison can you point to as standout recognizable characters even divorced from their story? There's definitely a few, but not many. I'm not talking quality or depth of writing, I'm talking straight up pure recognizability. There are many beautifully written women in yuri, now more than ever. I can't think of many who'd like, get a figure made or have their face splashed on merch, though.

I don't really have a conclusion here. I love Yuri a lot, but at the end of the day this is just kinda the state of things right now.

I think I particularly enjoy the way he tries so hard to cultivate a working image of "a proper man" because he's just so accustomed to it for survival; he's doing it on a level of awareness and unawareness, all while believing something entirely different. It makes for such a vivid character study, a very realistic intersection of lived experiences and unspoken feelings.

Also. "You shine more beautifully than anyone else." stares into the distance with so many feelings. I just have such a fondness for the way he can be so silly and so smooth, but in the depths of his heart he's so truly in love. tackles him

The way?????? He describes her enjoying herself??????? I. I'm not really sure if it's something specific to me, but I found it really moving. I don't know if it's the fact that he appreciates how much effort she puts into things, or this implicit like...recognition of her as her own person?? It's a little funny, it's going back to that contradictory idea I mentioned a bit ago. He's operating within the conceptualization of "the Flower and the Frame" but he's taken the conventional meaning and expanded/changed it, in a way. While he does recognize his role in it, part of it is operating more in line with the real parts of his personality: he thinks people who are talented and try hard at things are beautiful, and he likes to support them however he can. (There is an implication here that he assumes he's not special in quite the same way which makes me 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 pls Comte, I think a considerate and mindful person is just as wonderful)

And then that last part. Like. Do you ever just want to stick your head into a volcano because that's where I'm at ladies and gentlemen. The absolute heartache????? The agony inside me, the way he seems so earnestly surprised that one of the few things he did enjoy could feel even better, that it could take on an entirely new meaning. How is the writing getting worse. HOW IS THE WRITING GETTING WORSE. DON'T YOU HAVE EDITORS? BETA TESTERS? AUGH.

there's so much stage direction it's unbearable. people smile, smirk, chuckle, roll their eyes, shrug, scoff, groan, all of it, always, often for no reason, often to just fill word count, often so unnaturally it reads like they're all robots.

descriptions and dialogue are repetitive as fuck, and the prose quality is so poor. i feel like you could write a better game faster if you just had a better editor. or AN editor, really.

It really is a game that bit off more than it could chew so it didn't chew anything at all and just spit this back out.

I encountered like 3 major bugs in my first playthrough that would've broken the plot/game, if any choice actually mattered and the vampires didn't just swoop in to save my ass no matter what I did, so I guess no harm done ????

MAKE A SMALLER GAME THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY BOTHER TO PLOT OUT AND CODE

You can't keep bragging about how much you loooove adding variation when seemingly no or very few options actually impact anything

No seriously, the amount of times player agency is discarded just because nothing is allowed to matter is staggering (why couldn't the detective confess their love for Mason? well because it would change the dynamic uwu!)

I refuse to believe M is this fucking stupid, they clearly know enough about romance to realize that some other people might want more than they can offer (in fact they say this exact thing if you reject sex in book 2) so like ?? why wouldn't they be able to recognize or even entertain that that's what's going on? sorry i get not realizing initially but the longer it goes on the more annoying and less realistic it becomes

But that's a non-issue right? Because the romance develops in this book? Sure, it does, and that's one of the few good things about it, that there's visible romantic development with M at least, but it also just completely doesn't care how you approach the romance at all. If you try to approach M's romance as a slow burn, it's not taken into account. Because the game doesn't seem to track which kiss is actually your first, ANY of them could be, so they're all written as equally important, meaning none is allowed to be more important than the others

Same goes for the sex scenes. You're waiting until the best in-character moment to fuck M? Well fuck you. it'll be the same as any other. This was the first time? cool cool, the game doesn't care. headcanon your own emotional weight of the moment, asshole. first time my detective had sex with Mason was written with pretty much the same weight as any previous ones I read, and we didn't even get a morning-after scene when Mason ditches their ass. I'm sure your slow-burn, slow-to-trust, emotionally motivated detective is tottally chill with their lover leaving in the morning after they finally brought their guard down and let Mason in, right? no? well fuck you. it's a week later now and they have no comment to make.

"oh but it's sooo hard to code alll of these variations! you can't expect the writer to take your headcanons into account!" they're not headcanons. i can reject Mason's advances at every step of the way, but the game doesn't care about this beyond the next page where the rejection actually occurs. anything else plays out like it does regardless of whether it's your first time doing anything or not.

Here's a simple, cure-all solution to writing choices that are too complicated for you to handle: don't! just don't put them in if you don't honor them! DON'T FUCKING PUT THEM IN IF YOU DON'T HONOR THEM.

Speaking of fuck you, if you're playing as a nonbinary detective and you have sex with M? congrats on having ghost genitals. your "detailed" intimate scenes are so vague and noncommittal that it's difficult to tell who's doing what with what body part. it's all so vague and bland that there's really no point in picking the option at all. Pro tip, cissies: nonbinary people have genitals, too. I know! Wild, right?

What's funnier, you always get to pick if you "initiate" or not (I assume this is code for topping). But if you're NB, regardless of what you pick, you don't really find out what your character is doing, even though Mishka gave herself a perfect out to write player-based variation. Everyone's got holes, man. It's not that hard.

Basically the game insists you have sex with M ASAP because there's no material reason not to, but if you dare to be nonbinary and fuck M, good luck on figuring out that sex scene, bitch!

Rebecca is still getting so many excuses and second chances that it's getting genuinely triggering to read at times. Your character keeps having to confront her about their relationship and it's like it wants you to forgive her because it's #feelgood. Plus, if you decide not to work with her at one point, you get a shorter climax where you're a cringefail idiot who can't do anything right. If you work with her, everything works without a hitch and you get to waltz out being all cool and badass. huh? huh ? huh ???? i hope this is just something me and my pals who played this are missing and maybe there's more variation??? but man oh man the Rebecca stanning going on in the narrative is so uncomfortable :')

We really peaked with Falk. This new villain is barely a presence and doesn't even get named until like halfway into the story. We meet him once and then he's defeated.

Sin, who got a lot of hype and buildup ... is not of any consequence. He just leaves.

You don't even find out what his deal is if you go the combat training route. Oh you thought this was vital info that would be delivered to you regardless of your personal character choices? fuck you.

Addie, the face of the victims of these gruesome kidnappings? comes back at the end as a non-speaking character you never even talk to personally.

The whole entire kidnapping+human/supernatual trafficking thing is just so ... bad. It's all so poorly constructed and not thought-out at all. Why would you go here with your silly vampire detective romance? Who thought this was the place to do that?

The detective's emotional breakdown is triggered by a random nameless victim who never comes back into the story again

The detective's emotional breakdown involves them being naked in a shower with their LI. This is (in M's case, at least) never brought up again and barely has any impact on the romance (because you can avoid it, so it can't matter too much<3)

The blood drive that was set up as being a potential major issue and would maybe tie back into the alleged "main plot"? Easily avoided, explicitly in-universe boring, and literally of no consequence

After all this, after three books of being dumb as shit for no reason other than idk cringefail cheap angst? Mason confesses his love for the detective via a NEVER-HAVE-I-EVER DRINKING GAME.

NO REALLY. I'M FUCKING SERIOUS DON'T WALK AWAY FROM ME I AM 100% TELLING YOU THE TRUTH RIGHT NOW

This is, of course, not touched upon at all and the detective (who, at this point, is pretty much aware they're in love with M) barely reacts at all

Kaiju Week in Review (March 19-25, 2023)

This week gave us a much better picture of Gamera Rebirth, thanks to its panel at Anime Japan: we got a synopsis, character descriptions, another opponent unveiled (Jiger!), some toys, and a trailer. I'm loving the redesigns for the kaiju, and am pretty intrigued by the extent to which the U.S. is battling them, but the animation for the humans doesn't look any better than the Polygon Godzilla trilogy. I guess I can bear it for Gamera's sake.

Actor Jiro Dan (middle) died on Wednesday at the age of 74. His claim to fame was playing Ultraman Jack's host, Hideki Go, in Return of Ultraman and many Ultraman series and films since; he was also G-Guard Commander Besuke Jinguji in Godzilla Island. May he rest in peace.

Just when I was starting to worry that IDW's second run of Godzilla comics was going to abruptly end in May, here's another five-issue miniseries. Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons chronicles a secret voyage of Sir Francis Drake in which he and his crew encountered the King of the Monsters and (naturally) other Toho creatures. Believe it or not, this is Drake's second meeting with Godzilla: the first was in Dark Horse's Godzilla, King of the Monsters #10. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Godzilla in pre-Atomic Age settings though. Frank Tieri is writing and Inaki Miranda is illustrating; first issue's in June.

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS was the first Godzilla movie I saw in theaters (at the Pickwick, no less), so catching the Fathom Events showing on Wednesday was a nostalgic treat. Less nostalgic, but quite welcome: new subtitles! Well, new to us. @kyodaikino theorized that they're actually older than the dubtitles we've been forcibly acquainted with. None of the frame rate issues I heard Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla suffered from either. No idea why this was playing on a random weekday in March, but they should keep it up.

Every so often, The Asylum makes a giant monster movie that's a decent way to waste 90 minutes. Ape vs. Monster, their Godzilla vs. Kong mockbuster, was one such production, but I'm sorry to report that Ape vs. Mecha Ape (their... King Kong Escapes mockbuster?) is not. Indeed, it seems bent on entertaining the viewer as little as possible. Avoid at all costs.

Here's the trailer for Shinpei Hayashiya's next kaiju flick, War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs. Goura. The bar is in hell after his last one, so qualities like "there are suits for both of the monsters" and "the frame isn't wallpapered with cheap CG effects" are notable.

Godzilla Battle Line introduced a new mode, and it's a pretty enjoyable one. Like free battles, challenge battles equalize the levels of all Battle Pieces in the match; you also have to follow certain restrictions when building your team, forcing strategies to shift significantly. The more you win, the faster your egg cracks open and yields rewards. I've only dropped one match so far, which is no surprise; as a trans Pokémon player, I have a lot of experience with egg-hatching.

this is fun! I think she has 3 major ones. The third is debatable though. Of course, all of the love languages are important!

Acts of service: Bonnie is usually doing the heavy lifting in her friend group. You can say pretty words about wanting to help her but I think it would be equally important to her if someone showed her they can carry the weight too. She’s independent, but someone being there with her does lessen the load on things. It’ll shock her receiving help but she’d appreciate it. It shows someone actually heard and saw her.

Quality Time: Remembering Bonnie’s abandonment issues and creating depth for that. Neither parent took time to spend with her…We don’t see that if it’s “implied…” anyways. Bonnie would want to learn someone, what they like/dislike and as much as they learned her. If they’re going to be around longterm it’s best to understand that. She’d want to believe that it isn’t just the magic of being in confined areas is why someone liked her. As much as I do like Stefonnie, I think of that s4 scene where Stefan asked to be let in, hugged Bonnie as she cried but after that she asked did he come over because he needed a spell…which is why he was there in the first place. Hugging her first just kinda happened. What else backs my thoughts up here is the constant “you’re not used to someone….” comments that were usually from Damon/Enzo in the final seasons. Granted those were writing shots at Bonnie but point remains

Physical touch & Words of affirmation: Bonnie seems into touching her partner a lot. That’s what we see through Jeremy/Enzo. Bonnie looks more into them than they are with her but she does seem to heavily enjoy kissing and having that extra touch. Bonnie’s lack thereof with her sexuality compared to the other girls is for the obvious reason. Lastly, I do think she’d enjoy those positive remarks at her. It shows someone noticed the work she put in or just thought nicely about her period! She wants to be valued. Bonnie wouldn’t mind saying great things about another person too especially if they're appreciating her.

Myles: Sharing a bed with him is a must, because he's the Prowler he gets paranoid that you're not okay and wakes up from nightmares and holds you tight if you're sleeping over. But if you're at your own house, he either spam calls/texts you or rushes to your house. You've woken up a few times to find him asleep on your fire escape, which worried you and you covered him with a blanket and sat out there with him. Miles: Wants to share a bed with you, but won't make you. He's less anxious than his twin and if he wakes up from a nightmare he texts you and gives you a call. If you answer, that's great. If not he leaves you a voice mail along the lines of: "Hey Mi Amor? I just wanted to know if you're okay. Call me when you can Love, Te quiero." He'd be up for a few hours after that and would turn on his bedside lamp and draw, destressing. Waking up Myles who would talk him through his anxiety.

Forehead kisses, that's it. The twins love giving you them. It makes Miles happy to see you laugh softly and kiss him and it makes Myles' heart warm to see you so happy at the affection. With both boys it usually ends up with kisses.

Myles: tends to send you stupid Tiktoks late at night, so you wake up and laugh when you watch them. Miles: sends you those cute romantic Tiktoks

A little scenario, because it's got me in a chokehold right now

Myles: The two of you are cuddling in his bed, his arms are protectively around your waist and his face is in your neck. You're quietly watching videos on your phone, the volume was turned off when you realized he was asleep. After a bit you tried to pull away only for him to pull you back and quietly whines out. "Wait... Don't pull away... Not yet..." Miles: The two of you were on his bed, your head was on his chest and one of his hands was gently rubbing your back as he aimlessly scrolled through Pinterest. You were half-awake and decided that you needed to wake up, you slowly pushed yourself up and yawned. You didn't get far as Miles' arm snaked around your waist and pulled you close. "Stay, I wanna cuddle"

The twin's biggest fear is something happening to you, his mom, their twin, or Uncle Aaron

Myles: Is a "boxer" and has matches that are monitored to make sure no one dies Miles: Goes to his brothers matches and brings apple juice and animal crackers, because he's definitely the more caring twin

For your first date Myles bought you flowers and chocolates and took you out to the movies. Miles, on the other hand, set up a blanket fort with fairy lights and had all your favorite snacks and drinks in it. They two of you watched your favorite movies together until you fell asleep.

When you cry, Myles holds you tight and rubs your back, kissing your head every now and then until you calmed down. Whispering soft things to you as he held you tight. Miles held you close and pulled you into bed. Cuddling you as he kissed your cheeks and made stupid jokes to make you laugh.

The first time you took Myles' shirt off to help him with a cut, he panicked: "Aye AYE! Conejito! Mami! Stop that!" Miles, panicked so badly he had passed out due to hyperventilating. By the time he had woke up, you had finished and were asleep in his desk chair. He smiled dumbly at you and whispered: "Thank you Cariño"

When you passed out (for whatever reason) Myles panicked, cried, and refused to leave you alone, Miles (who panicked as well) didn't cry and kissed your hand. Staying by you so he knew you were okay.

When you gave Myles the silent treatment he gave it right back, he didn't show it but he was overthinking about what he could've done wrong. Miles, tries to get you to talk and is a bit more vocal about talking through why you're mad at him.

Myles touched alcohol ONCE, came home late and was blackout wasted. He was extremely clingy and affectionate. Miles has never touched alcohol

Anyone who truly had DD's interests at heart that night would have de-escalated and walked away from any conflict so as not to embarrass him at an event where he wasn't even the focus.

I couldn't help but notice you capitalized WYB but not XZ. Was it unintentional, or was it an act of hatred toward GG?

Look - nothing can make Yibo inferior to anyone. You should know that as his fan. The fact that I - a 'dirty old CP fan' - can see his unassailable beauty more than you can, should embarrass you given your apparent anti-CP attitude.

I'm not so insecure about his qualities and abilities as to need to 'defend his honor'. His honor is beyond reproach, and his achievements and independence are above any diminishment from randos online or from other artists, husbands or industry people. He doesn't need us to defend him.

Solo fans need to get it into their heads that the only people with the power to shut turtles down are GG and DD. The fact that they have chosen not to do so should give you pause and make you humble.

The thing that solo fans will never understand, is that there are as many perspectives on how to be a turtle as there are turtles. Turtles are not a monolith.

There are turtles who behave in ways that I find incredibly offensive, just as there are turtles who behave in ways that I respect. The same is true for solos. There are some whose approach to fandom I respect, and some I find awful. I don't spend too much time hand-wringing over what other people do. Live and let live. That is what GG and DD have asked of their fans.

The hilarious thing is, MTJJ think that turtles don't care about DD, and XFX think that turtles don't care about GG. They're so full of their own hatred toward the other man that they can't get their head around the idea that we love them both. I'm not sure toxic solos are really capable of seeing that love. They're too full of hate.

If you've spent any amount of time on my blog, you will find that love on every page.

I don't like it when people feminize and oversexualize GG, and I don't like it when people infantilize and underestimate DD, regardless of what fandom they claim to be a part of. I view GG and DD as equals and as individuals with their own achievements and autonomy. It annoys me when people fail to see their individuality and their humanity - whether out of ignorance, inexperience, bigotry, fantasy, lack of reflection or from having been misled by others.

However, other people's behavior is none of my business. Everybody gets to be a fan in the way they want to be a fan.

Even though I think MTJJ's anti-BXG and anti-GG behavior hurts DD and probably makes him feel like shit on a regular basis, I really don't spend much time stressing out about it. You have to make your own choices, and if showing him how much you don't accept him is your choice, that's yours to live with.

It is not my job to police other people, nor is it your job to do so. We should all stay in our own lane and mind our own business. And however possible we should learn to get along with each other, because we aren't going anywhere.

Accept it. Turtles are here to stay just as MTJJ are.

You should be glad that DD has our support just as I'm glad that he has MTJJ support. The more support he gets, the better. In an industry as mercurial and hostile as C-ent can be, every star can use all the support they can get.

We have been supporting Yibo as a group for 4 years now. Our numbers are only growing. Find it within yourself to accept us rather than trying to start a war.

but absolutely! i completely understand what you mean. i bounce between placidus and equal house systems, so i really get what you mean in regards to certain placements moving around in the different systems, and trying to make sense of it all/find which house system resonates the most for you!

i would say the main differences between an 8th house sun/mercury and a 9th house sun/mercury are (and of course, this will be impacted by the aspects to these planets + the sign they're in):

8th house suns + mercurys are generally more reserved, private, cautious. 9th house suns are more outgoing, extroverted, social

adding to the last point, 8h sun/mercurys are extremely secretive, even the more talkative signs/signs that usually overshare like gemini/leo. 8h sun/mercury tend to share very little about their plans, lives, emotions except with those very close to them (and even then, it can take a lot). 9h suns/mercurys are not very secretive nor reserved in this manner whatsoever

8th house suns are more homebodies, 9th house suns tend to constantly have the travel bug/love going out to explore

8th sun/mercurys are very investigative; 9h sun/mercurys are very inquisitive. 9h sun/mercury is always learning something new and changes their hobbies/studies pretty often. 8h sun/mercury is more settled and tends to dive extremely deep into one subject/topic at a time. 8h sun/mercury is more the psycho-analyzing every thing someone said in a brief convo type, lol, but 9h sun/mercury is more the 'i don't rly care about our convo, i have bigger philosophical things to study'

8h sun/mercury tend to tie their identity to their past and their loved ones > 9h sun/mercury are pretty detached and fluid with their identity, they can let go of the past significantly easier

also, if you've had immense financial struggles within life, i'd go ahead and say you may be more the 8h sun/mercury (although that's also dependent on your venus/aspects); the 9h sun/mercury placements in my experience tend to have an easier financial time throughout life (although can be prone to reckless spending depending on their venus/jupiter as well)

8h sun/mercury people i've noticed tend to feel inherently unlucky, 9h sun/mercury people often feel like they're quite lucky

8h sun/mercury is usually pessimistic/realist, 9h sun/mercury is more the optimist/somewhat realist

i also think a helpful comparison is looking over the different themes of the two houses:

eighth house | is all about emotional security! this person is fueled by deeper connection, emotional understanding, etc. they prefer to make deep, lasting connections with others in which they use to feel secure and better understand themselves.

ninth house | is all about greater understanding! by this i mean, they're more fueled by education, philosophical discovery, etc. they prefer to make a variety of connections; even fleeting, to discover more about others and satisfy their need to understand the world around them.

these two houses definitely have a bit of overlapping themes, but these are just a few stand-out differences i tried to highlight as best as i could!

Oc Asks Game

Hey Spyri! Thanks for the asks! I'll do them for both Mino and Moro!

9. What is your character's trigger point? What makes them angry, sad or makes them go off?

Minovae: Pointless cruelty, abuse of the law, injustice, and selfishness.

Pretty clear-cut, Mino has a bleeding heart as much as she has a sense of righteousness about lawfulness and the "intent" of a laws versus how they're literally interpreted. Her vision for lawful society is one where the laws apply to all equally and consider intent as much as action; where laws more abused than not are stricken from the record and abusers subjected to the hammer of justice; and happiness and health and prioritized far more than any sense of productivity.

Instances of cruelty without point and the law being twisted to hurt the very people she's given her life to serve are enough to draw forth the "Little Linnorm" side of her: expect little mercy.

Other hot-button issues for her are of course racism and classism and other types of prejudice for what someone is rather than who. She's been subjected to much her entire life (and people she cares about!) and has no patience or tolerance for it. She will only ever care about a person's actions in terms of judging them.

Morolai: Disrespect and feeling powerless

Morolai is simple: treat her like she's a goddess on this earth and also make her feel powerful and in-charge. Anything else is going to turn her into a clawing, biting, acid-spitting beast.

Part of that goes into respecting extensions of herself, too, though: her chosen companions and her nation! A dragon is nothing without their hoard, no? Well, things she cares about are part of the hoard. Any disrespect against them is against herself, and she takes such slights incredibly personally.

16. What do they look for in a friend? A love interest?

Minovae: Mino makes friends easily! In fact, it'd be more accurate that people start out as Friend-adjacent to her and are then downgraded when she finds out more about them that she doesn't like, lol. She loves mortals and just the experience of being alive with others and coexisting, that sharing of experiences and stories and knowledge... She values having a varied friend group so she can share in as many lives and experiences as possible! That being said, she looks for friends that aren't pointlessly cruel or maliciously evil.

As for love interests, Mino makes a ton of friends easily because she's demiromantic. It takes a LOT for her to actually fall in love, not really developing any crushes or anything. Her love interests are almost always based on qualities she lacks but subconsciously wishes she had herself. Her first relationship was with a Desnan cleric that was very carefree, didn't quite follow the rules and just did what they thought was 'right', and was very proud of their brightly colored hair and other unorthodox features... Said cleric also left her to die to ghouls, too scared to fight to save her only to perish to them anyways, but... well first loves don't often go that well do they?

With Regill: she admires his ability to be completely unaffected by any prejudice and complete acceptance of himself; wishes she had even a fraction of his finality and confidence in herself; and, believe it or not, did wish she was a little bit more ruthless! She also adores his passion (which most people don't understand since he seems so stoic but she'll go off on it let me tell ya lol) and drive and ability to admit his mistakes and faults (which plays into his confidence) and complete and utter selflessness of course.

Morolai: Friends... I suppose Morolai would consider her companions her friends. It takes, uh, a long time for that to happen. Basically anyone that has stuck with her through life and death situations, have proven they will die for her or suffer on her behalf, and actually care about her will earn the coveted title of "her friend"... give or take a few years!

For love: first off I'm not sure if she's capable of such a genuinely selfless feeling. Her 'love' is entirely toxic and selfishness, a possessiveness of someone body and soul such that they are devoted entirely to her. They must be entirely subservient to her, worship the ground she walks on, and yet also have the intuition of what they can and cannot do with/for/around her (with the drive to do what needs to be done if she does not expressly order or request it). It's a tough job, but let's not call it entirely thankless.

She does take care of her beloved toys/tools/pets.

TURN-97: He Appears! The Mysterious World Champ!

The true objective of GeneX, hosted by Principal Samejima, was to find who it is that holds the "ultimate D card." Similarly, Ed Phoenix has been dueling in order to find the criminal who killed his father and walked away with that card. At the same time, the Dueling Pro League's World Title Match was about to get underway--one involving the Champion who has ruled over the Pro League for the past decade, DD. DD is also Ed's guardian, and his duel with Doctor Collector and his IQ of 200 gets underway. But their match is over in an instant--at the hands of DD, and the ultimate D card he used.

TURN-98: Activated at Last! The Ultimate D Card

Ed learns the truth--that DD, the World Champion, killed his father and stole his card--and is challenged to a duel.* Ed battles by making full use of his D-Hero cards, but just as it seemed that he was on equal footing with the World Champion, DD at last activates the ultimate D card, Bloo-D. Faced with this predicament, Ed... *Should note the preview text I translated for this mentioned that he was challenged "for the key Saiou entrusted him with," but... this wasn't actually mentioned, and DD challenged him to a "duel to the death." Though I guess that kinda works with how the dub tried to tie him to the Society of Light, lol.

A smidge late, but episodes 97 and 98 are finalized!

Got ourselves an interesting two-parter here, as we circle back to Ed's season-long quest to find his father's killer and the ultimate D card stolen from him, introducing us to his foster dad DD. Why is DD his foster dad? As we find out, for reasons--ones related to wanting to keep tabs on the investigation into all that. But in the years since, DD's gone on to rule the Pro League for a decade, thanks in large part to the mysterious powers of the Light of Destruction within him--which, as Pegasus tells Samejima, is behind the Phoenixes' tragedy and... several other events in history. Ed gets closure with his dad at the end of it all, as our ultimate D Bloo-D absorbed him, and he gets to finally get his life moving again.

Very much enjoyed these two episodes for what they were in completing Ed's arc; I felt it pretty believable in GX's context, with how his motivations were fueled by finding his dad's killer now that he can do something about it, and his rise through the Pro League being to find the guy at the top who'd have his dad's Bloo-D. Also a nice touch is that, when he finds out DD only took care of him as a means to keep up to speed on the investigation into it, Ed discards any sense of respect he had for him (notably, Ed initially used "anata" (a more polite-yet-casual "you") with him, but once that revelation's made, he switches to the ruder "kisama" and calls him "human trash" for what he did). Both were also screenwritten by Shin Yoshida, and 98 in particular gets helped by the animation work from Tea Sun In's team.

Edit-wise, not as many as last time; I only touched up 97 in two spots, while 98 got more of the handful of fixes I made, totaling 10 for both episodes--97 was more consistency/quality-of-watching stuff, while 98 had that plus a couple of quick card fixes. Due to Tumblr’s dumb link limit in posts yeeting them out of the tags used for them and limiting their reach, and since I still wanted a visual element to it, I’ve made a separate post here with my usual fix/edit breakdown for the interested!

Quick housekeeping: made a quick revision to 95 to fix a consistency error in my translated credits; the name "Chan Yoon Lee" under the Key Animation credits should actually be "Chan Woong Lee;" since they're a Key Animator consistently on Chi Man Park's team, and the "Yoon Lee" name only shows up this once, it's fair to say it was a typo on the JP team's part. (EDIT, 7/6: Updated 98 to correct "an unique" typo in one of DD's lines, and reword another one about Bloo-D's absorbed souls later on.)

Anywho, enjoy! Next up, I'll be working on 99-101 which work nicely to continue from where 98 leaves us as we start getting into Season 2's endgame, with Ojin coming for Judai's key and Ed confronting Saiou (in two really good episodes). I will be a bit more casual with it as my birthday's next Monday and I may or may not have plans for it, lol, but stay tuned!

OC Questions answered from this post, For Nascosta cause I'm a little bored and decided hey why not, i got time. This is going to get really long, i mean the post itself with just the questions is long. So i'm going to drop this under a read more.

1. What’s the lie your character says most often? That they're actually stronger and better than the people that they mimic. They don't actually believe this, and only some is it actually a factual statement. But they ESPECIALLY say that they're stronger than other mist users which a majority of the time? is not true at all.

2. How loosely or strictly do they use the word ‘friend’? Other than when they're using it to taunt people, very... rarely. It's fucking arduous for you to get Nas to actually like you in the first place much less even admit it. She doesn't really like to use titles like that lightly.

3. How often do they show their genuine emotions to others versus just the audience knowing? It's a mix really because it entirely depends. Most times it's pretty obvious as to what she's feeling. There's a few emotions like fear that he'll cover up without even realizing, with his big ecstatic grin and laughter that almost seems exactly the same as when he's genuinely enjoying and taunting someone. But it mostly depends on context.

4. What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss? Funnily enough, they've actually kept most of their hobbies despite being in a busy assassination squad. How have they done this? what's their secret? Ditching work by pretending to be someone else. Fun fact, Nascosta is actually really good at cooking and baking, so sometimes to make up for ditching she cooks something for Xanxus so Squalo can deliver it without dying to the boss being pissed off it's not high enough quality. She also just likes to do this in her spare time so it's a win win.

5. Can they cry on command? If so, what do they think about to make it happen? Yes she can but she mostly uses it in her mimics than in any other scenario. She especially doesn't want to cry in front of the varia unless a mimic requires this because she's pretty sure they'd all look down upon that! Which yeah they would. But admittedly though she could just think of literally anything negative about her life long enough and break down, she mostly just uses illusions instead, since doing that would affect her focus if she's not careful.

6. What’s their favorite [insert anything] that they’ve never recommended to anyone before? Given she doesn't actually talk to people that much and keeps the things she actually likes mostly tight under lock, Just about anything can sit here. He doesn't like people knowing what he actually likes in case they make fun of him for it.

7. What would you (mun) yell in the middle of a crowd to find them? What would their best friend and/or romantic partner yell? Well, provided they WANT to be found. Because Nas is a bit of a bastard when it comes to giving people a hard time. It's honestly really easy to get a hold of them just by name. Of course good 50% chance they use the opportunity to fucking spook you though.

8. How loose is their use of the phrase ‘I love you’? Yeah uh... Good luck ever hearing this in their life time. It's really hard for them to make friends, even harder for them to ever say this set of words. Takes a while, even while in a relationship for her to even say this.

9. Do they give tough love or gentle love most often? Which do they prefer to receive? For them it depends who they are talking to. Like they observe people and see what works best on that person before attempting themselves. Though it's unlikely he would ever try for someone at all in the first place. She actually hates both equally. This is because she sees both as looking down on her in some way, and usually grows aggressive and defensive immediately. Only people she actually likes will either method be somewhat effective.

10. What fact do they excitedly tell everyone about at every opportunity? Anything that they think makes them seem cool, strong, smart or otherwise special. how she's as physically as strong as her strongest mimic, how she's good enough to be trained by an Arcobaleno. So on and so forth, sometimes they are greatly exaggerated and most times also said at the same time as insulting another in order to seem better.

11. If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?

See with Nas being so secretive and in control of most tics she has very few easy ways to get. if you want a question that you can get the answer to for sure you better have been their partner for at least several years and know that you can ask things from their past because literally no one else would know the answer but you and her. otherwise you will need to do something that would trigger her. as she has some uncommon ones an imposter wouldn't likely connect. blowing up a balloon to its fullest extent and popping it by doing so or doing the same with chewing gum will make him immediately panic. This is because Nas' first time not only seeing their mentor who they thought was impossibly strong fight, and was also the very first mist battle thet had ever seen, was the mist ring battle. and we all know how that ended.

12. What’s something that makes them laugh every single time? Be specific! Seeing their superiors get mildly injured especially if in the consequences of their own actions. Particularly if it is Squalo because both she really dislikes him and he has really really funny reactions to things. She once saw him kick something out of anger and stub his toe only to grow more pissed off and she had to do everything in her power to avoid laughing so hard she couldn't breathe.

13. When do they fake a smile? How often? Extremely often, for intimidation, to tease people, to hide fear, to hide sadness. It's hard to tell his faked from real though, at least just looking at the smile. He has a biiiig wide unnatural looking smile even when they're being genuine. so looking for forcing is hard. look more at his eyes.

14. How do they put out a candle? Depends if they have an audience or not, with one she does it with her fingers. Without it, he does it normally by blowing it out.

15. What’s the most obvious difference between their behavior at home, at work, at school, with friends, and when they’re alone? He doesn't go to school so we'll skip. Home and work are the same place since everyone in the varia lives at the Varia HQ. There they act aggressively and flashy, trying to get attention of any kind so it mostly ends up negative attention cause it's easier to garner. With friends she's still a bit of a prat, but is more teasing and playful. She'll also go out of her way to do things for them without being asked. Just to make sure they still like her. when alone... that's when he actually allows himself to feel negatively, it's so exclusive to this that he will actively attempt to leave if he feels a mood drop coming on because he doesn't want to be seen like that.

16. What kinds of people do they have arguments with in their head? Anyone and everyone honestly, she is constantly thinking about scenarios and how to succeed in them. though this is only cut by the other type of thoughts she has which is constantly figuring out how other people would react in scenarios to a highly accurate degree for her mimics.

17. What do they notice first in the mirror versus what most people first notice looking at them? If there's no illusions whatsoever, both parties notice the scars she has first. normally she hides them completely, but there's so many of them that it's hard to find a part of undamaged skin. Jumping into the deep end that was the varia from only half a year or of combat training from a much less dangerous man left them utterly brutalized under their illusions. Now most people assume they just heal well from injuries. If with just those covered, the first thing they notice is how tall they are and how muscular. But since that's common in the varia most people just notice how strange their eyes look.

18. Who do they love truly, 100% unconditionally (if anyone)? Currently? No one. If they genuinely get into a relationship though... they're very all or nothing incredibly obsessive, they'll believe that they've done something wrong far before they believe their partner can ever have done so. It's not good for him really, but unfortunately he's just like this.

19. What would they do if stuck in a room with the person they’ve been avoiding? Depends why she was avoiding them. If it's because they believe something bad will happen if they interact, well now she's gone invisible. If it's because they just don't care to interact with them, they'll sit in the corner mind their own business until let out, maybe if it starts taking a while they'll start to work together if it's clear they're not getting out. If it's because they fucking hate that person well, they're going to lock on to trying to fucking murder them

20. Who do they like as a person but hate their work? Vice versa, whose work do they like but don’t like the person? That's pretty easy, they actually like Mammon but fucking hate being trained by them, which makes sense because part of their training requires mammon to piss them off since unfortunately she rarely has the motivation to improve otherwise. As for the other way around, really any of their superiors. But especially so for Bel, they love the way he fights, but would rather be dead than be in the same room as him. She does like to use his mimic only choosing xanxus' over it for power.... He however doesn't fucking like that because the first time he saw it he thought Rasiel somehow came back again.

21. What common etiquette do they disagree with? Do they still follow it? Thankfully, she has decent table manners, but any other form of etiquette has completely fallen to the wayside as she purposely is disrespectful most of the time. He really doesn't see the point of playing around these things even if it's gotten him into a lot of shit.

22. What simple activity that most people do / can do scares your character? Well as a new one that wasn't already mentioned above(Chewing gum, blowing up balloons, both make her uneasy now), taking medicine. Every other thing like going to the medical bay, getting shots everything is fine. But taking any oral medicine like cough syrups or pills, she absolutely can't and won't. Thankfully Lussuria is around to put her in a headlock and make her... Though that's if anyone finds out he's sick in the first place given he'll just hole up in his room as long as he can.

23. What do they feel guilty for that the other person(s) doesn’t / don’t even remember? Well, that's pretty easy. Since Nas will begin to feel incredibly guilty about purposely doing things that were so much as mildly inconvenient to a person as she grows to like them. She once hid a part on Vittorio that he needed for a weapon he was making for over an hour. This to her, by the way, is just as bad as the times she's verbally threatened him while holding a dagger.

24. Did they take a cookie from the cookie jar? What kind of cookie was it? First, they probably made the cookies in the cookie jar, they're allowed to take from it. In fact they usually have to be careful because much to their dismay anything they bake gets fucking stolen if they're not watching. But as for what? God something rich as hell, maybe chocolate caramel fudge cookies.

25. What subject / topic do they know a lot about that’s completely useless to the direct plot? Thanks to their obsessive perfectionism with their mimics they end up learning a lot of utterly useless things that the other person knows. As an example: They now know way too many shark facts. They have so much random trivia in their head if you want to know something provided they're willing to cooperate they may just be faster than searching something up.

26. How would they respond to being fired by a good boss? Unless their relationship with the boss was as good as their leading, Nas would try to fucking kill them. Flat out. They do not handle rejection well and violence is his first answer. If they DID also like the boss on a personal level, well the answer is then crumple into depression upon rejection.

27. What’s the worst gift they ever received? How did they respond? Nas sure doesn't get gifts so it's actually very hard to disappoint them. They will pretend though that they're not actually that impressed by it though. But it's hard to say the worst gift when you haven't been given any yet.

28. What do they tell people they want? What do they actually want? They always say different things when asked, it's not accurate it's not honest it's just always something different. A lot of the time they'll just say nothing, that they're not working toward anything that they just want what's in front of them. This is deeply untrue. They want more than anything for someone to actually like them even if they self sabotage constantly because they don't believe they deserve that. They want to be the things they claim to be already, because then someone would actually want to be around them if they were worth something, right?

29. How do they respond when someone doesn’t believe them? Annoyance, he's used to not being believed. If she was telling them something important he'll just say "Well guess I won't be hearing from you after you fuckin die". Like they're mad about it, but they'll just watch the person suffer for not believing them.

30. When they make a mistake and feel bad, does the guilt differ when it’s personal versus when it’s professional? hm... Honestly no, it just hurts in a different way. it's the same level and she'll react similarly but it still is fucking up in front of her peers and she hates it regardless. Though professional honestly it's rare to actually feel guilt over anything, it's more just a pissed off feeling.

31. When do they feel the most guilt? How do they respond to it? You must understand something about Nas' emotions, everything is almost always max level and violently swinging until they actually get some friends because they fucking have no god damn stability. Even then... Basically there's no specific scenario where he'd feel the MOST guilt because everything is just set to "Time to repent" Upon fucking up for a majority of their life when feeling any guilt. Speaking of the answer is usually self isolation... and in some cases causing harm to herself.

32. If they committed one petty crime / misdemeanor, what would it be? Why? Look, Nas has committed many petty crimes/misdemeanors. She's an assassin, and an illusionist at that, she doesn't see why she needs to worry about tiny little crimes. Who gives a shit, thanks to illusions no one would even know. That said Nas likes to fucking steal shit for fun sometimes, like just to see what she can do.

33. How do they greet someone they dislike / hate? If they dislike you, you'll most likely have a hand picked insulting nickname sneered at you after a hello. If they hate you? Pray that they don't greet with immediately trying to stab you.

34. How do they greet someone they like / love? If they like you they'll just greet you with a hey and a name, they still want to act cool. If they love you, uh well they're most likely draping themselves over you and being realllly affectionate as they say hello.

35. What is the smallest, morally questionable choice they’ve made? Hm, you know, most of the time the smallest one is usually just seeing someone who could use a little bit of help and just choosing not to because they can't be bothered.

36. Who do they keep in their life for professional gain? Is it for malicious intent? God this either counts for most of their relationships before they actually start liking people, unless you don't see it as that. Since technically they're kind of just being used for additional fodder, really. Since they can't really play nice with people for this, i don't think they really are doing such a thing.

37. What’s a secret they haven’t told serious romantic partners and don’t plan to tell? Since Nas is simultaneously very open and very not... It just depends what has ended up feeling like something that need to be said. Like anything of their past, their real name being Narciso, the fact their appearance doesn't match anymore. But one that has not been said is that they do want a family. But with being aware of how unstable he is, he knows that this want is just being selfish. He'll be happy without kids anyway. Just sometimes they do think of about it despite that.

38. What hobby are they good at in private, but bad at in front of others? Why? Bold of you to assume they ever show their hobbies to people. But hm, I can't think of one she'd preform worse at, unless the other person was purposely causing problems. Nas tends to be surgical precision in like most things so it leaves very little room for error.

39. Would they rather be invited to an event to feel included or be excluded from an event if they were not genuinely wanted there? They'd rather be invited so they can still turn it down. At least it's their choice to go still and they can act above the invitation if she senses that they're not actually wanted. They hate both a lot but at least they get to spit in the face of someone in the first.

40. How do they respond to a loose handshake? What goes through their head? They don't actually care much if the handshake is loose. But if it's particularly loose they'll swing the person's arm a bit and ask if they're worried about breaking their hands. More just to get a reaction.

41. What phrases, pronunciations, or mannerisms did they pick up from someone / somewhere else? Despite how much they hate it they actually picked up some of Squalo's non-professional speak after learning it for his mimic. Fortunately for him it's not very obvious. People think they picked up the way Bel smiles but they had actually been doing that for a while. No, instead after learning his mimic he started standing like he does without realizing. A lot of little tics that his mimics do you can actually see that he does, though good luck guessing where, or who she got it from.

42. If invited to a TED Talk, what topic would they present on? What would the title of their presentation be? Hilarious fact about Nas, is despite constantly wanting to be a center of attention, if it's something professional like a meeting or something she gets stage fright. So During this she'd probably be halfway to crying but they'd probably give a presentation on how to analyze and predict people.... good luck understanding it though.

43. What do they commonly misinterpret because of their own upbringing / environment / biases? How do they respond when realizing the misunderstanding? Sometimes they just don't think about things. Though he can always figure out things and use logic, to the point he can predict people's movements and things they'll say to him, he emotionally reacts first if something SOUNDS like something else and he's not in the right headspace. They need to be trying to do these things for them to avoid making these misinterpretations.

44. What language would be easiest for them to learn? Why? Given they had to learn 7 so they could get paid at the varia and continued to grow their repertoire making sure to practice them regularly so that she doesn't get rusty... I'd say there's a good amount of languages that'd be easier to learn from the experience. Though... at the same time with the amount of shared language words that actually have different meaning.... Well easy to pick up hard to differentiate with most I'd say.

45. What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately? First, mark everything they care or hate about is incredibly important to them, even if it's not actually in the grand scheme- but one of the things they hate with a passion is anything they bake for themselves being fucking stolen on them. They have poisoned batches just because of this out of frustration. so... careful.

46. Are they a listener or a talker? If they’re a listener, what makes them talk? If they’re a talker, what makes them listen? It switches a lot, They don't talk at all sometimes and other times they're talking the majority and won't shut up. It really depends on the topic and who they're with. if it's interesting they'll completely listen unless they don't like the person then they're interrupting whenever. It's really all over the place.

47. Who have they forgotten about that remembers them very well? Nascosta remembers people too well, especially people who have rejected her. Which is almost all of their previous relationships. Worse at a certain point they ended up killing those that do leaving a huge gap between people that could have remembered them and current. None of those people would really recognize him at this point though, personality wise or physically. She used to be very, very different when she was a civilian.

48. Who would they say ‘yes’ to if invited to do something they abhorred / strongly didn’t want to do? Yeah you're going to have to be dating him for a yes and even then she's going to to whiiiiiine unless it's something incredibly important to them. If they don't end up enjoying it though they're going to be moody the rest of the night so always choose carefully when doing this.

49. Would they eat something they find gross to be polite? Absolutely not for just anyone. But then again they wouldn't keep quiet either if it was bad for anyone. It's just whether or not they'll spit it out right in front of you, and whether or not they give proper criticism or "This shit sucks". Admittedly though, there's not many overall dishes that she'd actually find bad, it's just if you can prepare them right.

50. What belief / moral / personality trait do they stand by that you (mun) personally don’t agree with? Well given they're a fucking bloodthirsty assassin who loves to watch people struggle in pain. Uh. I would HAVE TO SAY A LOT OF THINGS THERE I WOULD DISAGREE WITH. Like Don't murder people???? that's a good start. we'd be here all day if i kept going.

51. What’s a phrase they say a lot? "It is what it is" Mostly whenever they've pissed someone else off and want to make it worse when they're being accused of doing something.

52. Do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting? Depends whether or not they're in the right headspace. Nas likes to have all the information they can have before doing things but it's uncommon they are emotionally capable of doing so.

53. Who would / do they believe without question? Hm, as they grow closer they begin to believe people more and more. There's people who they'll believe with very little questioning, like Mammon and Vittorio. But absolutely without question would once again end up being a romantic partner.

54. What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation? Depends on the trigger. Most triggers will cause a fight reaction, but ones without clear thing to focus on will cause flight(invisible enemy sort of deal), or ones that are genuinely too overwhelming to her forces her to freeze. Fawn is reserved almost always to people they like getting mad at them.

55. What’s something they’re expected to enjoy based on their hobbies / profession that they actually dislike / hate? Good question, most things they like line up with the expectations, more because they would avoid anything they didn't like vehemently, to the point they wouldn't even want to be associated with it.

56. If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear? If they're scared they lash out or isolate or do ANYTHING to hide that they are. They refuse to let anyone comfort them when they're afraid. this doesn't change on type. Even when they trust more they utterly struggle to sit and let someone close during this time.

57. What’s a simple daily activity / motion that they mess up often? Actually eating regularly. Sometimes depending on their mood they may entirely end up missing multiple meals in a day. They try but sometimes their brain won't work with the body.

58. How many hobbies have they attempted to have over their lifetime? Is there a common theme? God, they have many, many attempted ones. Things that they thought would make them useful, things that they needed to learn for mimics "just in case". He's a patchwork of other people when it comes to his hobbies.

People who have actually read my critique of OMORI might've noticed that I cited this particular interview as the source for several of my claims.

Today, I'm going to try and dissect that interview as well.

Given that this interview is (apparently) also meant to be a lecture on game design and writing, I believe there is a lot to unpack here.

IMO, "a sense of spontaneity and randomness" does not equal the lack of a coherent plot, but hey, what do I know?

"My goal was to think very little and let my stream of consciousness flow..." Letting your thoughts flow freely is still thinking them, though. Additionally, what kind of writer advises people to think about the story they're writing as little as possible?

Yume Nikki had eerie piers and quiet trains too. This is not as innovative as she seems to think it is.

"Certain dungeons were only workshopped for only a week or even days." It seems that the game was really rushed.

Keep this in mind. It will become relevant later.

A direct manifestation of one's subconscious that progressively becomes more nightmarish and unpredictable is exactly what Silent Hill is.

I'm not trying to say that writers using previously-explored ideas in some other form in their writing is always bad, of course. However, I believe there is a signficant difference between drawing inspiration from a particular work of fiction for your own and blatantly lifting imagery/concepts from other works to fit your own story. Besides, OMORI doesn't even really put an original or interesting spin on any of the writing conventions and previously-explored ideas it features.

...Sunny's childhood was pretty much ideal, though. His life up until Mari's death is presented as such by the game. He had a loving older sister, very loyal friends and all the newest toys. Not only that, but Omocat herself has previously described Sunny's childhood as "very idealized"

Padding out your game with extraneous fluff just so that people don't get mad about the money they poured into your project seems... rather dishonest to me.

I personally think that length does not equal quality. A game can be 20-30 minutes long and still leave an impact, as LISA: The First can demonstrate.

"The experience becomes what you make of it" reads as a very convenient way to deflect any sort of criticism towards her writing.

"If you found numerous holes in the story and were left dissatisfied as a result, that's your fault sweetie uwu"

I personally see this as laughable writing advice. If you build the foundation of your story on the highly subjective and nebulous Vibes™ while giving little to no consideration to the logistics, your story is going to be a hot mess.

If "there are limits", OMORI's writing doesn't seem to have any. Judging by how thoroughly it permeates the plot, "Feels before reals" could be reasonably taken as Omocat's writing philosophy. There doesn't seem to be any underlying sense of thematic or narrative cohesion to anything that happens in the story other than the aformentioned Vibes™.

As I've detailed in my critique, this "writing philosophy" can be seen in the character writing as well. The game sends the message that Aubrey's hurt feelings are of more importance than the real harm she inflicted on Basil by bullying him, and then undermines its own message of "acting like grief affects only you is selfish" by implying that Sunny and Basil's feelings about their involvement in Mari's death matter more than the real harm they have inflicted on their friends by remaining silent about the real reason she died for 4 years.

I can see her point - that "realistic" horror is way scarier and hard-hitting than something blatantly fictional - and I can agree with that. However, I can't call a panicked 12-year-old improvising a multi-step plan to cover up a murder "a believable circumstance" by any measure.

I suppose that the horror of a beloved family relative unexpectedly committing suicide due to severe and deep-seated mental issues they hid for a long time was too unrealistic of a scenario to explore.

She comes off as... mildly self-aggrandizing here. "yeah Link and Red are assumed to be self-inserts but MY silent protagonist isn't like the other girls 😤"

"actually he thinks a lot" literally where? what little crumbs of narration the player happens to get from both Sunny and Omori are incredibly basic. even Frisk felt more defined as a character than Sunny and Omori do despite having a minimal backstory and similarly staying silent at all times

Not only did Aubrey snoop through her friend's personal belongings while he wasn't looking, she subsequently disowned him and then started bullying him with her new friends because she assumed the worst of him and instantly believed her own assumption without giving him a chance to explain himself.

Man, isn't she just awesome?

Note the casual admission that Kel exists purely for the sake of being a plot device.

Amusingly, this also seems to (inadvertently?) imply that Kel wouldn't be needed at all if Sunny was an actually interesting character in his own right.

There's a single easily-missed bit of flavor text about Mari coming home tired because she's been attending cram school.

That's it.

Even if Mari's perfectionism is supposedly "present in other places", it's still not given enough focus to feel like a substantial and consequential character flaw.

...well that becomes rather uncomfortable in hindsight. man, imagine if Mari treated Sunny the same way Omocat seems to have treated some of her employees

As mentioned in my critique, this reads like a very convenient way to shield Basil from any criticism regarding his decision to stage Mari's death as a suicide.

Loneliness, insecurity and "very deep emotions" are not an excuse to tamper with a corpse.

You'd think such complexity would've been reserved for Sunny, the main protagonist himself. Apparently not.

"...These characters are so loveable! How can I get other people to see how wonderful they are too?"

Note the phrasing here. It's not even something along the lines of "I dearly love those characters, and I hope you will love them too!" She's stating that the characters are loveable and that she wants to get other people to see how wonderful they are, as if it is an objective truth.

I suppose that's the reason the characters seem to feel so shallow upon scrutiny - the game just assumes that you'll fall in love with them on sight and thus doesn't bother putting in the work to make them compelling or even remotely believable.

The game literally makes you look through Basil's photo album three times over the course of the game. In fact, Basil outright spells out that the album is supposed to be "proof of [their] friendship!" And that's not even mentioning Memory Lane and the DUET animation, which are essentially the game forcing the player to look through the photo album two more times.

Remember when I said that the game seems to have been rushed?

It actually was. OMORI was released on December 25, 2020, so there is no way Omocat didn't put herself and her team through insane crunchtime that year in order to get the game out as quickly as possible. In fact, she seems to confirm this when she follows all of this up with

The game she's asking you $18 for is essentially a rough draft.

Oh, and by the way, the total amount of funding OMORI received via Kickstarter was $203,301.

Save to say we're all insecure at times, but it kinda breaks my heart when I see people worry about their portrayal due to canon. I feel you, I have these doubts too. It's like easiest (just right after comparing roleplayers) topics to get upset because of. So let me just-

Nothing we all write is canon.

Canon is the source material and trivia, behind the scenes, such stuff. Even when creators of the original media say something, it's not always canon either. Fanworks are never canon.* They can be canon compliant to greater or smaller extent, but it's never canon. It's not the media after all. So why bother so much about it? We're here for fun. We create fics, roleplays, arts, edits and the rest for fun.

I'm not immune to that doubt, but if I was to stick to canon, I'd drop my muse faster than speed of light. I cannot stomach rwby's canon anymore, so I wouldn't be able to write topics I find ignorant and harmful.

So I believe the main question is: do you have fun creating your stuff?

If yes - awesome! Let's go! Let's write edgy, cringe, silly, and whatever else stuff that sparks joy. There is no competition to win after all. The joy of creating something together with someone is all the reward to gain. There is no more canon vs less canon. It might feel like that, but there's only people's preferences what they prefer to lean into. Want some unpredictable twists? Roleplay! Want some specific thing you control events of? Write fanfic! Want explore looks of your fave? Draw, commission, play with creators like picrew! Have fun! (Don't do illegal stuff, that much goes without saying.)

If not - what can you change? Why is it upseting or hurts your feelings somehow? Or maybe it's not interesting enough? There are many solutions to that problem, but I can't offer any advice. Everyone is different and each experience goes differently. I believe finding your why, what you want and how can you get closer to it is the key to improving the experience. Without aggresion of course. Respect others but respect yourself too and communicate. Maybe someone said something that planted doubts in you, so maybe talking with them to clarify what they ment or talking with someone else would comfort you?

Canon doesn't mean quality. Canon doesn't equal fun. Stop worrying about straying from it and have fun <3 I can't imagine rpc without all the lovely OCs around and they're pretty obviously not canon. Canon is only a base for fanworks to start from. Have roots in canon, but bloom freely, my beautifully creative friends!

*edit: yes, fanworks can be included to canon, but it's usually explicitly stated and a known fact if it occures. I just reminded me Star Wars. there is too much regarding canon / non-canon there. Not the point anyway xD
