Am I an asshole for making fun of someone’s name and interests but then apologizing? I (16M) recently became friends with some people in my lunch hour. They are Z (17NB), M (18NB) and K (17M). M is dating A (18FTM), who i have met twice and had maybe two brief convos with, and he seemed sweet at the time. However, A is friends with the whole group, so they all know him and talk about him. We have joked in the past about the fact that A has the same nickname as one of my other friends. For the sake of fake names, lets say the nickname is Alex. I refer to my friend as Alex and Z,M, and K all call their friend Alex too. However, one day i called my friend by his full name- again, fake name, but lets say- Alexander. M makes fun of my friends name, saying its a bad name. In retaliation I jokingly say ‘your partners name is worse!’. A’s full name is a different spelling of a rather nice name, for this lets say its Alexyus (like Alexis). I mention that i like the name alexis, just say “but who spells it with a y!”. I also add, “plus theyre literally a dsmp and homestuck fan!”. OKAY BEAR WITH ME! i will fully accept and admit that thus far i have been an asshole. It wasnt okay for M to make fun of my friends name, but it also wasnt okay for me to make fun of their partner.

Anyways- no one seemed too upset by it in the moment, but later when i got home i received messages from M, K, and A. M’s had some odd sort of long copy pasta which basically said i hope you suffer, but it felt like a joke to me so just responded withh “i aint reading all that”. K’s message was wild tho- he said “i was just hoping you would kill yourself, overdose, hang yourself, or even just cut ur wrists. what is wrong with you, you fing freak!”. which is… wow! After i read the message i saw him edit it to add a “/jay” (meaning joking) at the end, but the original message had no indication of it being a joke. However, i accepted it as a joke because…. Why would he tell me to kill myself lol…. Anyways, A’s message was polite and formal, asking to talk about something i said earlier at lunch (A isnt in our lunch, he wasnt there when i made the comment about his name, but i assume M or K told him). I respond equally politely and we had a good conversation about it, i realized that it wasnt at all my place to make thats jokes or poke fun at A in that way, and i apologized. A said it was all good and honestly i was impressed with their forgiveness and maturity. I hoped A and i could become potential friends in the future, even. I was still peeved that K literally told me to commit suicide, but whatever yknow. The next few days at lunch were awkward but my other friend, Z, and me mostly just didnt talk to M and K. At some point my other friend, who i told about this, mentioned to K kinda offhandedly like “yo it was kinda fucked up u told (me) to kill himself..” and K informed us that he actually didnt send the message, it was A on his phone. M corroborated this story and then we left, but i was honestly so shocked.

Now i dislike and feel uncomfortable around M, K and A (although not Z, who agreed that what the rest of them did was not okay), because to me it feels like they all were okay and agreement of the message. But ultimately i’m really conflicted- it was definitely wrong of me to make fun of A (even if it was not meant to be serious, i dont know A well enough to joke like that), but i feel like telling me to kms is unjustified. Maybe it all is stupid drama tho, and i should just let it go?

*** i forgot to add- if its worth noting, since A is trans, he chose his own name, and mentioned that was one of the reasons he was specifically upset. Should i have not made fun of his name because i know he chose it himself? (Idk if it matters but my friend alexander is also trans and chose his name too. Also i love him and his name to death so maybe thats why i was specifically defensive of it.) but anyways:

Am i the asshole? Are we all assholes?

@cleofast300 hope it’s ok if I respond to your tags from my essay (linked here) and lol no need to apologize for writing lengthy paragraphs as far as I am concerned. I certainly can’t judge and am always happy for more discussion. :)

On that note, you are very right it is more so about what c!Tommy himself believes. His perception is not that of the audience or at least it really shouldn’t be that of the audience, while as you said he can believe he is the hero and justified that does not make him one. And the difference between audience perception and character perspective is what I kinda talked about in the essay that came out before this one (linked here). Where I try to highlight how it is less about what the characters think about themselves and others and more about what we think of them, which can be derived from a variety of factors... anyways straying off topic.

While I would say he is certainly not self aware and that does play a role in his character, I’m not sure I would say it is his biggest flaw. For one, it is not the cause of all of his conflicts, though I supposed you could argue that is it the underlying problem for which the rest of his flaws spur from. But I’m not so sure. he is certainly not the only character without self awareness. Most importantly though, I do not think his character arc revolves around self awareness. Because he doesn’t over come that in the end. He becomes aware that c!Dream has feelings and emotions, but he doesn’t recognize what he did to hurt those feelings. He doesn’t gain awareness for the part he played. There is no remorse. As you said, the ‘sorry’ was about the nuke not for how he hurt c!Dream. For self awareness to be his biggest flaw and the one he over comes, he’d actually have to gain awareness for how he hurt people. How he hurt c!Tubbo, how he hurt c!Dream, how he hurt c!Punz… etc. He’d have to gain awareness for the part he played in the mess. Instead, we have a ‘sorry’ that is about the future. About realizing they wanted the same future all along and that it’s too late for that.

You are right of course, it was about him learning to see the world in its complexity and not as the black and white - hero and villain- one he wanted it to be. Though he is hardly unique in that viewpoint, so I’m not sure it is a strictly child perspective as much as it is just a naive and deluded one. Plenty of other characters share this perspective of the world and it is less about age but actually about the stages of psychological development (but thats a discussion for a different time). In fact, the main theme of the dsmp as a whole is about realizing that the world is complex, that people have different perspectives and things aren’t always cut and dry like we want it to be. It is easier to believe you are the hero and everyone who hurts you is the villain. But I will say, although c!Wilbur exasperated this ideal, he did not create it. The disc wars were already a thing. C!Tommy had that belief long before c!Wilbur arrived, he just used it to manipulate him, but that mindset was already there. That idea that he was the hero of the story was already set. So yes, c!Wilbur used him to be his little soldier pinning him up against c!Dream. Yes, he was abused and manipulated, but that only makes him a victim not the victim.

But just because in the end he realized that c!Dream was not one-dimensional, doesn’t mean he becomes self aware. It broke the cycle of violence, yes, because he realized they wanted the same things and the violence this whole time was actually useless. But that doesn’t imply that he feels remorse, realizes he hurt people, that he plans on being better and changing his behavior, that he no longer sees himself as innocent, that he is aware of the things he caused, that he no longer thinks he’s justified, that he realizes how Wilbur used him. It only showed that he realized that people are complex, with feelings and emotions and motivations, who are flawed, who can be hurt just like him. His views on people changed, but honestly we don’t even know how far that ratified his world view. Whether it just changed his perception of c!Dream or others as well…we just don’t know…

hm i had some hot takes abt dsmp characters + genshin visions

ok for context visions are usually given to certain people for certain reasons.

anemo = seeking freedom

geo = overcome challenges despite odds

electro = outsider or having been on the verge of death

dendro = taking risks to seek knowledge

hydro = following a strict sense of justice/moral code

pyro = passionate and want to use that to further self or others

cryo = trying to escape conflict, unsure about self

so here are some of my hot takes on some dsmp characters and what visions they would have under the cut

sam - hydro. as a prison warden he is an upholder of justice in his eyes, and is unwavering in his duty even if it hurts others.

tommy - electro. both for being an outsider and for literally having faced death and coming back multiple times.

tubbo - geo. for remaining strong and motivated despite everything life has thrown at him.

fundy - anemo. seeking freedom from family ties and l'manberg.

wilbur - geo. similar to tubbo, but with the added "literally overcoming death" bonus. don't think it's enough to warrant electro.

schlatt - hydro. it's lawful evil babes!

eret - cryo. WANTING TO ESCAPE CONFLICT!!!!!!! ITS GOT ERET WRITTEN ALL OVER

jack - electro. another one for the funny death guy pile.

niki - pyro. explanation not needed i'd hope

quackity - anemo. because lol bird but mainly because his whole character deals with his relationships and how he often feels trapped and powerless because of them

karl - dendro. taking risks (memory loss) to gain knowledge

techno - pyro. passion used for others even when people view it negatively.

phil - anemo. bird. just wants to grill for god's sake

connor - electro. self described character as "lost" yep that's electro babes

puffy - hydro. she just wants to help and is very justice-motivated. also pirate

ranboo - cryo. come on

foolish - electro. literally a totem of undying. dies to save another's life.

slime - dendro. knowledge is like his whole thing

and ofc he insists on getting you the best skates money can buy and paying your coaching fees so you can get the best person going

if you’re into skating as a fan too he gets you tickets to watch big skating tournaments / lots of signed memorabilia etc

basically he’ll do anything to support and show interest in your hobby, well almost anything

he refuses to actually skate with you bc he knows how bad you’ll show him up and he’s not about it lol

makes jokes about not wanting to steal your thunder bc obviously he’d be sooo good and that’s why he won’t skate with you

he might secretly get some lessons if you’ve been together a while though, so he can surprise you one day...

can’t understand how elegant you look on the ice, you make it look effortless

like he’s a texas boy so i reckon he’s probably never ice-skated in his life, except the one time you dragged him onto the rink with you

he lasted less than three minutes before calling it and has flat out refused to ever go on again

he DOES love taking you to the skate park tho, and you get into inline skating (bc they’re kinda similar at the end of the day) so you can skate together “on solid ground” as sap puts it

also he can’t get over what you wear for competitions

like he feels kinda conflicted tbh bc obviously you look sexy asl in those skin tight outfits but they’re also just a tiny bit goofy

they remind him just slightly too much of pro-wrestling ??? idk

he’s amazed by you though and his lockscreen is a selfie he took during a competition with him going crazy in the foreground and you doing some insane spin jump in the background

the photo’s kinda blurry and you didn’t actually land that jump but he does not care

you two have a tradition of getting drive through take out on the way back from competitions or difficult practices bc it helps you decompress, and you shit talk your competitors together in the privacy of his car

he also heckles the judges that give you bad scores like he’s at a football game and you’ve had to tell him to stop so he doesn’t get banned

George

he just genuinely really enjoys watching you skate

he’ll sit on his own in the stands for hours just watching you practice, or even just scrolling on his phone, but he likes to be there with you anyway

sometimes he’ll facetime karl or somone and show them what you’re doing and he always gets so smiley

he has a lot of fun coming to watch you compete too and he makes a whole thing of it like he’s going to watch a big sports league final or the olympics or something and you’re his favourite team

like holding his breath when you do difficult jumps and spins he knows you struggle with and jumping up and cheering when you land them

of all of them he’s definitely done the most skating, with you and just in general

he’s still not very good but he can mostly stay on his feet and just laughs when he falls over bc fun > ego every time with georgie

loves just holding your hand while he stumbles around the rink with you or holding your hand over your head while you do a lil spin

he thinks you always look the most beautiful while skating: all giddy and smiley from doing your favourite thing and cheeks flushed from the cold and the exercise

Karl

another one who goes way overboard with the cheering just to be a dork and embarrass you

but also bc he is so genuinely proud of you and how hard you work to be good

he can’t make a lot of your competitions or any practice really bc he’s so busy with his work, but when he can be there he makes up for it with a bunch of flowers and gifts, and so much praise and cuddling

celebrates your wins and feels your losses so sincerely bc your success is his success and your sadness is his sadness

he undoes your laces and takes off your skates for you every time he’s there to do it

and after the stream where he drew on those sneakers you asked him to decorate your practice skates with whatever he liked so he could always be there with you in a way

he got so in his head about doing something incredible and you had to tell him you just wanted cute lil doodles and they’d be perfect bc he drew them

they came out like a graffitied primary school desk but with loads of different colours and little hearts and stick figures of the two of you smooching plus some affirmations about how amazing you are

he was so nervous to show you but you ADORE them and would wear them for competitions if you could

You've always been a huge piece of shit" is just. mwah. incredible. And there's an official acoustic version of it too which I don't know if it's used as often but it has an entirely different vibe. Instead of the cocky or confident singer who has their target EXACTLY where they want them, it's someone who's given up and is tired of all of it. There's Options. it's fantastic.

I can list at least three full animatics for this song for every major fandom I have ever been a part of, and still it's so hard to find them because there are so goddamn many

It's an absolute banger from the absolute King Alan Menken, originally from the pretty underrated Tangled the Series. I've seen animatics for this for like every fandom I can think of, and it deserves it because it slaps and has great vocal performances from Jeremy Jordan and Eden Espinosa.

i'm pretty sure this song is more well known than the show it came from is lol. i looked up "ready as i'll ever be animatic" on youtube just to confirm and counted 20+ of them, and i didn't even finish scrolling. it is a genuinely really good song from a /surprisingly/ good show that imo is super underrated. i definitely would recommend checking it out if you get the opportunity!

it's a fandom song that transcended its fandom and became a hit for twist villains.

The song really fosters creativity with how many animatics can create a darker AU where the usual protagonist (or a close associate) is made to be the antagonist because of injustice suffered and the other characters have to fight against them

I've seen *at least* one animatic of this song in almost every fandom I've looked into

It has a lot of Animaniacs because it is sung by an ensemble cast It is good for demonstrating a lot of different conflicting perspectives of characters for your big dramatic fight and its catchy and I love it

I mean everyone loves a scenario where one of the main cast becomes a villain for tragic reasons and the rest of the characters have to fight them while dealing with the betrayal and attempting to make them see reason

How in the actual hell does a song from a Tangled spinoff series go this spectacularly hard? More to the point, how does it have an animatic/AMV for practically EVERY FANDOM IN EXISTENCE?! Yeah, most people know it from that one Warrior Cats MAP, but there is SO much more. Not to mention the bucketloads of people who used this song for their own OCs, which is always a bonus.

11. What do you think c!Dream’s life would have been like in season 2?

Hmm, I think would start quite pleasant, just building shitty bases, making new friends, and the grind(tm). With a haunting shadow over it, aches and glimpses of the past. Eventually conflict would start up again, but the alliances and severity might differ?

(I always wondered how far does the memory wipe go? There are many characters, that had relationships before the SMP, are those memories gone too?)

(also on a meta level, i think we would have gotten to the point again where nobody wants to be the villain and Dream would have recovered his memories or something lol)

15.What's your favourite c!Dream AU?

Man… that is a difficult choice. hrrrg look there is to many good ones, but here are three I really like?

To Tear Asunder - Sunshine-in-a-bottles's Dragon age AU (think Fantasy rpg game) translates the characters in really fun ways into the universe through a Series of short and not so short fics! So good, can recommend! No mans land - Hidding-in-the-Vault's canon divergent dsmp AU, the relationship between Dream and XD is sooo fun! he is just a little guy you know Eldritch Dream - the-final-sif, the premise is just kind of fun, i like the eldritch lore in it and the contrast of perspective between dream and everyone else is at once devastating and reeeally fuuunny lsglkd

21. Which c!Dream piece are you the most proud of?

I think this one! though i really enjoy both of the dreblrtine piece did too

I’m so happy you liked my eye pattern idea! 😁 I always liked how evolution can makes an animals “design” function and the false eyes was the first that popped into my head about butterflies, I also saw that I was really vague on the c!quackity plans idea I finally have time to clarify lol

I imagine that c!quackity coming and going from the prison would be super noticeable to the chat and they’d get curious and suspicious about it, most of the chat silently observe to gather as much info as they can to help c!dream but a few grow bold

Some would make themselves noticeable to intimidate c!quackity and let him know the prisoner isn’t truly alone

Some blatantly follow him to try and gain attention, making it harder for Sam and quackity’s plan to be secretive

C!quackity does everything he can to throw off suspicion from other server members and kill the chat to keep c!dream from gaining an upper hand

Basically like spy-vs-spy if one was the owner of minecraft Las Vegas and the other was a kaleidoscope of angry butterflies sharing the brain cell

"If you're back already," Sam said in a sarcastic monotone, "then I forgot to feed Fran."

Quackity marched into the lobby, his shoulders hunched and a hand on his axe. If anyone else entered the prison like this, Sam might be grabbing a weapon of his own, but he's gotten used to this sort of abrasive attitude from Big Q. Instead of going on the defensive, he raised a brow at the 20 or so butterflies that had attached themselves to Quackity's frame, surrounding the bloodspray on his shirt.

"Save the dad jokes for the guards. You got a flamethrower?"

Sam squinted. He did, actually, but... "No. Quackity, you're done for the day. You already left me with a mess to clean up."

"For outside, dumbass. These fucking bugs are all over your walls. I can't walk back home like this!" Pointedly, he plucked a blue butterfly from his suspenders and crushed it in his palm. It made a crackling sound before falling to the floor in pieces. A few more swarmed his face after that, and he swatted at them. "Have you ever looked at these fuckers faces? They're ugly, Sam. They're fucking hideous. If you don't burn them, I will."

Sam's eyes were on the remains of the blue butterfly's corpse. It looked more like a failed origami piece than a creature. The natural dust of it's wings powdered the floor, as well as the palms of Quackity's hand. It's color conflicted harshly with the pallette of the prison. Too bright, too vivid. Nearly glowing, even in death.

"I'll take care of it. Let me give you clothes to walk home in-- they noticed the blood on you."

c!Dream and the Theory of Attachment

“They are not excuses, they are reasons”

Disclaimer:

I am doing this just for fun! I am a psychology student, but don’t claim to be an expert on the theory nor psychology as a whole (obviously lol). This analysis is inherently flawed because of the focus on just one theory. It shouldn't be viewed as a serious thing, just a practice task I guess.

Because of the lack of information about c!Dream’s past (especially family & childhood, which are important to the theory) I am forced to make some assumptions and guesses based on the current behaviour of c!Dream. It is also important to remember that I consider myself a c!Dream apologist, so my view of him might be different.

Another thing I need to mention is that, given the nature of DSMP, sometimes it’s hard to say which part of c!Dream is c!Dream and which is cc!Dream. I want it to be clear that I don’t want to speculate on cc!Dream’s relationships nor psychoanalyse him.

Anyway the theory of attachment is one of my favourite parts of psychology, so I decided to combine it with the complexity of c!Dream :D Hope you enjoy the read! (and pls don’t take it as a serious diagnosis or something for whatever reason lmao - it’s all just for fun ^^)

All talk below is about characters!!!

Why do I think he has not developed a safe attachment in the first years of his life properly?

I think Dream had no ‘safe haven’ figure in his life. No one was always there when he was exploring the world and trying to find his own place in it. Why? No idea. We don’t know what happened during Dream’s childhood, but I think that by looking at his current behaviour we can theorise.

He is very childish under all that ‘villain persona’. Dream doesn’t seem to trust easily. He keeps people at an arm’s distance, even his closest allies – just look at Punz. Does he know the plan? Yes. But are we sure he knows the whole plan? I’m not sure. Dream doesn’t share his pain with him either – says that what happened in prison was just a mistake, but a non significant one.

He is also not… very… smart. The famous ‘he can’t read maps’ post comes to mind. He is clever and has a lot of ideas, but he doesn’t think through all of his plans. His big plan hinges a lot on the reactions of others to his persona (Tommy especially). He usually goes with the first thing he comes up with – it’s more about survival instinct than a smart idea.

Another point is him relying on anger and violence a lot. Look at the conflict with El Rapids – he had trouble forming his thoughts and opinions clearly when under a lot of emotions and distress – or even the Spirit speech during which he turns to anger fairly quickly yet again.

He wants to be seen as threatening, dangerous. The question is – is it just for his persona? Just for his plan? Or is it something he can’t really control? Is he able to hide them as well as he does later? Or is it something he learns with time?

Moreover, look at how he reacts to the loss of someone/something he attaches to (or that he feels is under a threat)! The already mentioned Spirit incident – at first he tries to control his emotions, tries to get the leather (the thing he is attached to) back, but with each moment he loses a bit of his cool and the constant taunting makes him snap. He is afraid. Afraid of losing the last memory of his horse, the last thing he has from them. He wasn’t there when they died, he had to trade for the leather, he isn’t willing to let it go. And sure he says he doesn’t care, but… Really? Do we really believe the guy, who traded one of the disks for it, would just not care about Spirit? I find it doubtful.

He seems to be deeply afraid of being betrayed. Especially after the fiasco with Sapnap and George – he is still hurting, still feeling unsure in some way. They were his attachments, people he trusted. And probably still are in some way. He most likely doesn’t want to go through that again – look how hesitant he is around Techno, someone that is kind and friendly to him. Dream doesn’t trust Techno. Not at first. I would say the moment he begins to trust him is the prison stay, when they are forced to spend time together and Techno witnesses Dream at his worst (maybe including a breakdown or two). The proof for that attachment (or the beginning of one?) is the time Quackity comes back – Dream is afraid of Quackity, but he is willing to protect Techno. He stands against Q and tries to bargain with him. He cares about Techno, and doesn't want him to go through Limbo. In turn, Techno trusts Dream, wants to help him. And yet Dream is still surprised when Techno comes back for him.

Let’s get back to Punz for a bit – Dream could have someone by him all the time, could make a plan that takes less from him, that expects less from him and yet his priority is making sure Punz stays hidden, stays safe. He wants to make sure the only person that was and still is by his side stays safe. Punz has been with Dream since the first conflict. They know each other, and trust each other. They themselves say it’s more than a job now, that their money is less important than what is between them. And even after the prison Dream still wants to make sure his ally is safe – he could (should?) want someone friendly by his side, but he isn’t willing to have that if it means Punz is in danger.

That brings me to the next question – why do I think Dream has developed an insecure/avoidant style of attachment?

Because of how he behaves – both around others and by himself (not that we ever saw him by himself). One of the characteristics of this attachment style is the over controlled emotion regulation. Sounds familiar? Dream is the king of explaining why he shouldn’t be mad, why he shouldn’t hurt – look at the prison arc! How does he act so unbothered, so detached from the torture? Sure, we can see some cracks (especially during Techno’s stay and Bad’s account of the sandwich story), but he is scarily good at compartmentalization as well, which could tie in with the tendency to over control his own emotions.

Dream not only denies his own feelings and hurts, but also seems to misinterpret (or misunderstand) the feelings of other people – look at the break up of Dream Team again. It’s almost like Dream doesn’t understand why George could be hurt. In his mind, such a thing is not a big deal. It’s something you shake off and go on with your day. Something he does many times.

Another part of this attachment style is the perception of self as successful and others as unreliable or untrustworthy. It could tie in with the lack of a safe attachment during childhood – the need to fend for yourself. Dream does seem to portray those traits. It’s hard for me to determine which parts of his ‘I am the Admin of the server, the leader, the god’ are a part of his villain persona and which ones are the traits of the actual character, but I think even the fact of his persona (the one that is supposed to make others fear him, to make the plan work) being like that might suggest some things. Speaking of the plan – it’s worth it to mention the way Dream seems to think he is the only person who can make the server good again. He is the successful, powerful one, others can’t do that.

Some of you might probably think “Okay Kiuda, but what does it all actually mean? Why does it matter?”

Well, the Theory of Attachment was formed based on studies about children. What does it all mean? It means that we have some clues (guesses more like) about what Dream’s childhood was like. And what it all suggests is a lonely childhood. Either with no parental figure or with no figure that was willing (or able) to be there as support while he was getting to know the world. This might be why he tried to get closer to Puffy – maybe he desperately wanted to feel close to a mother-figure, maybe he tried to get close to Bad as well – the father of his best friend. Maybe that’s why he sounded so defeated when he told him to stay in the cell. Maybe it was another failed attempt at finding that healthy attachment, that healthy relationship.

Ultimately it all could mean one thing – Dream is lost. He needs someone to show him that trusting others is okay, that people are ultimately good and that he doesn’t have to (and shouldn’t) believe he is the only one able to save everyone.

ok ok that last characterization post that i reblogged made me start thinking about common tropes to hermitcraft and why that might be?

because i mentioned the whole responsible dadmin xisuma thing. and i think that's because people naturally want to be able to have someone In Charge in a fic. it's easier to write that way. but it's also an effect of worldbuilding in minecraft--the admins have special privleges that normal players don't have, and in a world where plots often have to do with "code" and other hybrid computer-y jargon, it stands to reason the admins must be powerful right? and with great power comes great responsibility lol.

it's also more entrenched in the fandom since this idea of admins being powerful has spread into being a common headcanon for multiple smps. I see it the most often in Hermitcraft, but I don't know if it was actually popularized in hermitcraft or if it's a remnant from older smps in the fandom. either way, the "admin is a powerful person" thing has spread to other fandoms (dsmp being a big one)

I also think one reason the Watchers continue to be so popular is that they fill the niche for a Big Bad in a hermitcraft story. Hermitcraft is more "difficult" to write plots for because most of the conflict has to come from an external source, which a lot of the time we don't have lore for (however moon big was a great source of an external issue) Because all the hermits are good guys, right? Most people tend not to write another hermit as the antagonist. Doc used to be put into the antagonist position a lot, which I honestly hate in earlier hermitcraft fanfic--I don't think he's evil, and most of the time it's not done well at all and is just insulting to him as a person.

Dream SMP on the other hand is EASY to write antagonists for. c!Dream is the obvious Big Bad in the story, but due to the nature of interpersonal conflicts on the dsmp, whoever the antagonist is can depend purely on who your characters are. It's easy to write conflict because the server has a lot of conflict. there isn't necessarily a reason to bring in outside forces when the characters generate enough antagonism on their own to be interesting, and if you do want a plot like that, there's canon avenues for it (i.e. egg plot can easily be turned into one that gives the server a common enemy, etc). Even on Empires, it's easy to write interpersonal/political conflicts due to the way the story is setup.

For Hermitcraft, the server doesn't have a lot of serious conflict between hermits. We may have the civil war or mycelium resistance or the S9 king plot, but there's always an ultimate understanding within the fandom that everyone is friends. they're on the same side. I do see people writing hermitcraft conflicts and storylines in a serious way, but it's not as common as it for these conflicts to be written as all in good fun. So, enter the watchers, which are beings just vague and powerful enough that you can do whatever you want with them, and they make a really easy threat for the hermits to face together, normally without make one hermit do anything bad lol

Life Series provides a lot of interpersonal conflict, but it also works within a structure that it very easily interpreted as being forced. Most people tend to interpret the players as being forced in some way--either trapped in a loop, lost their memories of their friends, lost their ability to think straight due to magicky bloodlust, etc. There's few works where everyone just like. genuinely turns on each other without something else going, which makes total sense given that these people are good friends everywhere else. thus, watchers was another common interpretation in life series, even well before martyn canonized it for his pov

ummmm i sort of lost where i was going with this, except for maybe an analysis of the fact that hermitcraft's found family/friendship dynamics lends most of its fanworks into being situations where everyone faces some sort of external force. which in turn influences what tropes and headcanons are common in the fandom. and it's not just watchers it's also the prevalence of possession plots (skulk? mycelium? the jungle?) and other things that provide a Common Enemy or influence a hermit badly in a way thats not Actually Their Fault

I’m still catching up on all the drama lol so maybe you’ve already mentioned this, but I think a big part of the disc war discussion that always gets left out is that yeah, maybe it wasn’t Canonically C!Dream Stalking C!Tommy at that time, maybe it was just them goofing around and doing a Funny Bit — but regardless of if that’s true, it’s canon now! It’s part of the lore! It’s been referenced many times by c!Tommy and other characters as an actual part of disc duo’s history. I think it’s fair to want to have a post just talking about how smart cc!dream is, bc yeah he’s super impressive and I think there’s a fair argument to be made that that moment was just cc!Dream and not acting-Dream (at the time). It’s fuzzy in the early days of when exactly people started Acting As Characters more consciously and to what extent, but it’s clear now that those events are considered canon to those characters and (even if it’s possibly in retrospect and not the original intention, like so many things in the dsmp) they’re definitely part of the lore. So all the people arguing that it isn’t canon or it’s stupid to think it would be are entirely missing the point, in my opinion. It’s not really a matter of if it was or wasn’t lore Then, it’s a matter of if it’s lore Now. I don’t think op was really at fault here, but I also don’t think it was silly of you to assume it was a lore post at first glance.

here’s the thing that people don’t understand !

they are acting even when they Aren’t telling giant robust stories. smps have Always been about roleplay, literally always. tommy played a main villain on smp earth, it wasn’t earth shattering lore but It Was Acting. smp earth Has Lore, you could lay out the history of what happened on the server like a story if you wanted to.

likewise, just look at Any of tommy’s minecraft mod videos. all of them have characters and narratives, and that fact doesn’t change just because they’re Silly.

in the early days of the dream smp the disc war Wasn’t intended to be a part of an on-going narrative about abuse because that narrative hadn’t been written yet. but It Was Intended To Be A Part Of The Conflict On The Dream Smp.

nobody was Actually angry with anybody in this, nobody was Actually waging war for anything. the real human being dream was taken was not trying to punish the real human person tommy innit for breaking his rules. they were Playing Up Their Characters On The Dream Smp to Act Out A Conflict For Their Audience. this was acting !!

and at the time the “bit” was that dream was Overly Obsessed with winning the war. That Was The Joke. he was called obsessed and called tommy’s stalker by other streamers at the time, they Played Up how creepy he was being On Purpose Because It Was Meant To Be Funny. that Was the bit, self evidently faljksdjklafds

that’s why cc!dream spent so much effort doing it ! because it was fun and because it was funny ! what I said Was The Intended Takeaway Of The Joke At The Time.

which is part of why it’s so Interesting that it works so well in hindsight, and why it’s Impressive that they continued to play into that dynamic that they’d established so early so Well and so realistically.

the disc war Is canon. it simply has to be with how integrated into the rest of the series it is. it has been actively acknowledged as a real thing that fully happened with in the lore and between these two characters through every single arc. every single one of them calls back to this event, both in a broad sense and in specific events that happened. Objectively the disc war is canon.

and Yes, people are reading into it now in ways that wouldn’t have been intended at the time, but that’s how Stories work. you learn more about the characters, their motivations, and their relationships together as we get more information and watch more events unfold. the fact that This story wasn’t planned out from the beginning doesn’t Change that.

nobody Has to talk about the lore if they don’t want to, but you can’t just strip away the context of a piece of media just because you don’t Like that context. objectively the disc war is much Sillier piece of the dream smp’s lore, but it is still a Part of it.

this is totally random but I was planning a fic and now i think i may have made the backstory of the world + characters a lil too complicated and convoluted

i was wondering if you had an opinion on that?? in your opinion, is there ever too much worldbuilding/backstory for a character?

for example, I was planning like lore for the city that my vigilante fic is going to take place in, and I was thinking of a whole Doomsday thing to nod a reference to the dsmp, and I was going to connect that to one of the characters causing it and having a whole redemption arc Pre where the fic's timeline actually takes place. If that makes sense??

It's kinda hard to explain lol but yeahhh!! the main gist is, should i keep things simple and straightforward, or is adding plottwists n stuff before the fic okay? (It would have a purpose for the plot that's not just characterization btw !!)

also no pressure to respond to this btw, i just know that sometimes you give writing advice so I was just wondering what your opinion on this would be? Esp since you did an amazing job with stars' worldbuilding and I wasnt sure how you approached that and alll that jazz

hmm this is a tricky one because usually I'm one to say you shouldn't make things too complicated, but I guess a better way to phrase it is you shouldn't set out to make things really complicated? because from what you described, it doesn't actually sound all that complicated to me. that sounds like a really solid setting and very good foundation for one of your characters to be connected to this pre-story event. it gives you an idea for what one of your characters is like right off the bat, and introduces the idea of possible conflict later on if someone who doesn't know that character's backstory finds out and is upset, or something like that.

so I guess what I'm saying is that if you already have the ideas and it feels like it fits into the story you want to tell, go for it. but don't feel like you HAVE to have backstories for every single character figured out right from the get go. let the story carry you where it wants to go, but feel free to add in complications early on, even if you're not sure where they're going to pan out. it gives you a lot of options later on when new plot points come up.

for example, in world forgetting when I had the scene of that fight when tommy was still acting as lucid and phil blew up the building, where dream used his fear powers on wilbur, I had dream reference the sounds of trains. I actually hadn't come up with wilbur's backstory at that point. but a very vague idea popped into my head while i was writing that scene and so i threw the train platform reference into the dialogue knowing it would be something i could use later. as the story went on that vague idea sat in the back of my head, slowly growing and influencing wilbur's character until the chapter came where wilbur talked about dying as a child to tommy, which was when i fully solidified his backstory.

so yeah feel free to throw in complicated stuff early on, but don't feel like you have to have it and also don't feel like you need it 100% figured out if you do throw it in. sometimes it's a lot more enjoyable to let the story flow where it wants to, leaving things loose until you get a better feel for what you wanna go for.

I feel like I kind of said conflicting things there but I hope that helps!!

Headcanon Time

I’m once again in dsmp pantheon headcanon hell, I have a lot more to say about it now. So first of all what sent me down my little rabbit hole is this comment left on one of my previous dsmp pantheon headcanon posts:

So yes, this exactly. You’re explaining my headcanon for me thank you, lol.

Foolish as the god of life is more connected to the physically plane then the spiritual one. But that made me consider the other differences between him and the other deities, another way he differs is unlike most of his fellow deities he does not have an immortal follower that speaks for him.

He has never appointed a special follower like Kristin with Phil or XD with Dream, and I’ve decided that has a similar reason to it as why he’s physically present in the world full time. Its because he doesn’t need some mediary spokespersons, he is close enough with humanoid species that they can work with him far more directly then other gods. I also have a mini headcanon that his name, Foolish, comes from how much of a handful humanoids have come to be for the gods. So he’s a fool for creating such troublesome creatures, but he’s grown so fond of his creations he’s decided to embrace that title.

Now for the next headcanon I came up with in that train of thought. In my big overarching headcanon Herobrian used to be a god himself but was banished, part of the reason that happened was because he was teaching mortals to build withers. Which is such a destructive act it has long been solely for the divine to know. But as you all probably know we’ve seen withers over the course of the story of the smp. But when you think about it (and god help me if I’m wrong cuz then this idea falls apart) it’s only the powerful individual tied to deities that have spawned withers in the main story, Techno, Phil and Dream(?) I don’t really know what he was doing during doomsday but it works out either way. So yeah, kinda a dick move to start creating horrifying, destructive, and incredibly dangerous creatures that no one has even heard of before to prove a point but immortals gotta have fun somehow I suppose. Those three only known how to spawn withers because of their ties to the divine.

Finally and very simply, since Herobrian was the god of peace and he is no longer overseeing his divine domain the world has fallen into an age of war. Obviously every conflict has its reasons and wars aren’t happening for no reason, but that’s why no one on this damn smp has any chill whatsoever.

while it was streamed 3 months ago, in canon it happened 6 months ago, so back in March or April. I'm not sure what this implies for all of the apology streams of cwilbur other than that maybe they're a lot more spaced out than it the stream dates made it seem.

utopia seems to really fit the symbolism of the desert in his poem.

the symbolism of his poem really reminds me of a quote I learned from a song too, Human Sadness by The Voidz.

one of the verses is:

Beyond all ideas of right and wrong, there is a field

I will be meeting you there

according to genius . com it's based on a quote by Rumi in The Great Wagon:

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,

there is a field. I will meet you there.

there's already been discussion that this described field, which, btw, is a vast area of empty land similarly to the desert, is heaven. in other words, a paradise or even a utopia.

the song is 10-minutes-and-56-seconds-long requiem that is based around the songwriter's history of conflict with his relationship with his father. a familial tie Julian Casablancas cut because of how different he and his father are in terms of values, views and interests and how they individually failed in the relationship, and it's a lament of how Julian wishes he could have fixed his relationship with his dad. but like many adults who never really saw eye-to-eye with their parents, there's always that hope that there's an afterlife where they can finally have the time to learn how to understand and appreciate each other because damn is life too busy for that sometimes. (The Good Place who?)

coincidentally, I already thought the song was fitting for all of the dubious morality and complicated histories of the cast of dsmp members. I also thought it was fitting for bedrock duo, considering they both admitted to still caring abt the other, but their friendship was kind of ruined bc of how opposing their values and ties were.

anyway. while the lyrics do suit button duo and such too, the point isn't to say that I think this exact song is connected to the book or lore, I just really love the song and this theme so these are just my comparisons to the symbolisms and the quote, which is more definitely actually related. lol.

it's going to be very awkward if because I haven't checked Wilbur's playlists I haven't realized the song's actually included...
