It was a normal day at the 118 for the most part. If anything a strangely quiet day. Everyone was sat down for dinner as Buck fantasized about Bobby’s Mac and cheese tuning everyone out.
“BUCK!” A voice shouted. He didn’t need to process the voice he immediately knew who said it. With a quick glance around the table looking for his boy he finds Christopher. He stands up and Chris runs into his arms. There is a moment where buck wants to remind him that his dad is in fact with them but they all knew that. Whatever the reason he was there for he was there for Buck and no one questioned it. Well buck did a little.
“What’s going on?” Buck asked suspiciously. If you asked Buck he would tell you your wrong but everyone else saw the way bucks hands and eyes roamed over Chris’ small figure. Panic, worry, and admiration seeping through his gaze like a dam breaking loose.
“I asked Carla to bring me here.” Chris smiled up at Buck. Almost proud he convinced the woman to bend to his will. Little does he know Chris could have called Buck and he would pick him up himself. Buck knows he needs to not be the fun guy right now though.
“Christopher you can’t leave school cause you wanna come here. You could have head over after school but I need you to understand that school is very important.” Buck didn’t think too much about what he was saying because to be honest he was saying it to remind himself. It had been a while since he had last seen him. For the last few weeks it has been ft and phone calls at night but that was it.
“Buck. You need a couch before you say anything like that to me again.” The attitude in those words was one hundred percent his dad. As he tried to remember the last time he made a joke like that he calls Carla to the table and pulls a seat beside him for his kid.
“Are you here just to humiliate me? Your dad has that covered.” He shoots a playful glare at Eddie. Eddie isn’t paying attention to the words spoken just the way Buck and Chris are interacting. Like it’s a new thing he has never experienced.
“No. I want you to hear me out before you say anything,” Christopher starts slowly, “ I was talking with some friends and they mentioned that their parents let them stay a week or so at their other parents house and I wanna stay with you for a week.” Chris cautiously starts. He doesn’t feel how Buck stopped breathing. He doesn’t see the shock on chim and Henriettas face. He doesnt see the way Bobby and Carla look at Buck. He doesn’t notice the way Eddie looks at him. “You can clearly take care of me: you did it when dad was shot. I think I can handle the snoring. I miss you and I haven’t seen you in forever and it feels like you’re leaving and I can’t handle that buck. I can’t loose you too.” For all the things Chris ignores, Buck can’t ignore the tears in Chris’ eyes as the words roll off his tongue.
“Chris… they are talking about their mom and dads. You have a mom and you have a dad. If you miss me just come over. I will make a weekend of it and you can take my bed and I will take the couch okay. I just need you to remember I am not trying to be a replacement for your dad. I’m not your father Chris but trust me your dad is so lucky to be yours. Leaving you….leaving you isn’t an option for me. You’re my soul. As soon as I met you I knew there was never gonna be a choice I make where you weren’t involved.” Buck tried not to look at the young man. He just couldn’t. He needed him to know that he would never ever leave. The images of all the people who left him flash through his mind and when the idea of Chris came about he couldn’t breathe. It’s not normal to care this much for a kid that’s not your own. He doesn’t think of him as a nephew or a brother but he is still the most important person in his life.
“What’s a dad buck?” It wasn’t a genuine question. But he wanted a genuine awnser.
“A dad. That is the person who fights for you. You know he is always on your team. If you’re in a bad situation you know he will drop everything just to get to you. He loves you endlessly and supports you through everything. From homework to bailing you out of jail. You know he will never intend to harm you and will kill anyone who tries.” Chris’ arms are around him and he is shaking. Buck holds him not coming close to understanding what’s going on but knowing what he needs. If he wants to tell him he will.
“The tusnami, you thought you didn’t protect me.” Chris remembers the way Buck tried to save others. Buck remembers going to Bobby’s that night and sobbing against him while Athena reassured him how his boy was safe at home. Buck had rambled nonsense the entire night about what could have happened. He is brought back to reality by the small hands on his face. Holding steady, the way you would approach a stray dog. Unsure of if you’re going to scare it off or not. Turning his body to face Christopher’s he takes his hands and places it on his heart. Remembering the way Maddie used to do that to show that her heart was his. The same way Bucks heart is his. “You saved me over and over again. When I went overboard I thought that was it. You jumped though. You came after me to find me. You did everything you could to keep me with you. When my dad was in the hospital you didn’t leave me to go with Carla. You immediately took care of me. I hear the comments people make. That you are a kid yourself. You can’t be a dad.” Buck knows it’s irrational but hearing these words come out of a Diaz’s mouth hurts. He can’t be a dad for someone. For Christopher he can be though. If that’s how he wants buck he will give him that part. “You bake goods and help me with my homework and tell me to get ready for school and love me no matter what I say or do and losing you is as scary as losing my dad. I had three parents and now I have two.” Christopher trails off looking around. Now he notices everyone. All the tears streaming down peoples faces and the shock and awe of Christopher’s heart being pulled out of his chest and gently being placed with Bucks.
“You and your dad have parts of me I never knew existed. This is just another one. Being a dad is something I can’t even imagine. But being anything less to you is even harder. Buddy, any way you guys want me I will give you. As long as you guys want me. I don’t want you to just say this cause you miss me though. If you miss me, tell me. Don’t say things you don’t mean.” He whispers to Chris. Buck isn’t whispering because he doesn’t want other people hearing. He physically can’t talk normally. His heart is in his throat and he doesn’t want to talk he just wants to hold him. Chris wants to talk so that is what he will do.
“Buck…. Will you be my dad?” Christopher pulls a cheap little ring that you get out of dispensers out of his pocket. Just like that, if there was any hesitation at all about being this kids dad it’s gone. The smile on his face as he tries not to laugh at his own joke makes him want to scream from the Hollywood sign that Christopher Diaz is his son and he is coparenting with Edmundo Diaz.
“Yes!” He screams dramatically matching Christopher’s smile tooth for tooth.
After an hour of everyone talking Carla and Chris leave. When Buck goes to lay down on the couch the 118 meet him there. They surround him on the floor and furniture while he thinks about what just happened.
“He called you his dad.” Eddie breaks the silence. To afraid to say anything he sits silently waiting for Eddie to continue. “Move over, Evan.” The name makes the silence deadly. The last time he called him that they were talking about him being Christopher’s legal guardian.
“I’m not gonna hurt him Edmundo.” Buck says with a slight edge to his voice. This was the first time Buck has ever called him that and Eddie ignores the ping in his chest of happiness. The 118 watches them, eyeing Buck… studying Eddie….
“I made you his legal guardian. I viewed you as his other dad before anyone else. I just want to know how you feel.” Eddie places his hand on Bucks shoulder. His thumb on his jugular feeling the steady yet slightly racing pulse beating through his body from that one inch.
“Nothing changed. He just went for the title.” Buck shoots Eddie a teasing smile replaying his words from the kitchen.

At the photo Chim claims she’s smiling, Eddie makes the comment, “ She’d making the same face Buck makes when he’s gassy.” Buck chiming in stating that he’ll take that comment as a compliment, because it means she looks like her uncle Buck. Eddie looking up at Buck as he says it, Buck looking directly at him.
I understand that Eddie was likely just making a joke, but his statement implies that they are so close and have spent enough time together, to know when Buck is a bit gassy.
Eddie and Buck smiling at Chimney’s love for his daughter. Eddie is the one to ask how Maddie is doing on her first solo shift with baby. Buck remind Chim that his offer to have Albert stay at his place still stands.

Ana shifting away from Eddie and offering for Chris to sit in between them. Eddie lifting Chris up and placing him in the middle. They all cuddle and readjust; Eddie lets Chris pick something to watch.
Episode 11: First Responders
Sue’s accident; Buck hops out the truck, Eddie right behind. Chim recognizes Sue, but Buck is the one to identify her.
Eddie is the one to instruct everyone to get Susane onto the board, guiding her with his hand. As Susane attempts to say something, Eddie is the one to ask what is she say saying. Buck is the one to make out she is saying 911.  Eddie reassuring Sue that they are there and they have her.
Not really sure how Chim and Hen started off with observing her and it switching over to Eddie and Buck taking over. But it happened, we even get two random firefighters taking over while Sue is put into the ambulance.
The security guard that watched the accident happen tells Buck that this was not an accident, whoever ran her over wanted her to die, they never took their foot off of the gas.
Buck visits dispatch, tells Josh and Maddie about what the security guard told him. They are trying to piece together what could of caused this.
Buck and Taylor are getting lunch together. Buck asks Taylor if she knows anything about the 911 call center. She admits to knowing almost nothing about the call center, aside from the fact that his sister works there.
Buck starts to info dump about Sue and how she started working at the call center since it opened, in 1984. He which he clarifies that the 911 phone number had existed prior to the center’s creation. Even letting Taylor know that dispatchers are not considered first responders in most parts of the country, only recently having changed in California in the past year.
He discloses how Sue was in a hit and run accident and mentions only 10% of hit and runs ever get solved. Taylor piecing together that Buck isn’t just info dumping and has an idea. Buck explains that the police have no leads, but if this accident had some coverage and more people knew about if, they could probably get some leads.
Buck starts to compliment Taylor, stating he has a friend that just so happens to be an amazing reporter. She smiles and starts to game plan on how she will sell the story to her editor.
Buck drives into the grocery store parking lot, where Sue’s accident occurred. Taylor is satnding outside waiting for him, she discloses that she’s seen the video footage of the accident and that something weird was obviously going on.  Buck wants to see the footage, but Taylor tells him that it’ll probably better if she just tells him what she saw.
Buck is confused by this suggestion, but Taylor explains that it’s because he knows her, and watching a video like that about someone you know is difficult. Buck insists on watching the video.
Buck and Taylor start to create a narrative as to why Sue was run over, which leads them to want to search thru the trash for possible evidence. As they walk over to the trash bins, Buck recounts the story of Bobby and Michael’s illegal plastic surgery clinic adventure, with out mentioning their names, just that the guy was tossing evidence in the dumpster.
The illegal plastic surgery clinic story line happened is Episode 7 of this season. I didn’t take notes on it because it was a Bobby and Michael story line, no way to tie it to Buck or Eddie. But I’m mentioning it now because Buck states it happened a few months ago. I’m just taking this moment to stress how there are normally a lot of time jumps with in the same season, so we can always assume that relationships continue to grow and strengthen even when we don’t see it.
Taylor and Buck discuss possibly calling the police as they approach the dumpster but are stopped by Athena before they can even search.
Buck is in an interrogating room, mindlessly roaming around and checking his teeth in the two way mirror. Athena walks in and tells Buck what they found in the dumpster, explain the hand bag belongs to the missing girl. Sue is likely tied to this because she most likely saw the girl with her kidnapper.
Buck puts together that the Sue was likely giving a partial plate, instead of saying 911 at the scene of the accident.
Taylor is sitting in a separate interrogation room, when she is told to call her camera man instead of the station lawyers.
So I know Athena brought Taylor and Buck to the station, mostly to keep Buck from playing detective and possibly getting himself into trouble or tampering with possible viable evidence. But what grounds did she have to bring both Taylor and Buck into the station. If they weren’t arrested, why did they need to be placed in separate interrogation rooms. If they were being detained, what would be the reason for holding them.
Container Yard: The 118 responds to help the drugged victim. Eddie hops out the truck and grabs a small saw and cuts open the lock on the gate, allowing the engine to move into the container yard.
Eddie, Hen, and Chim, are sitting in the truck waiting for the all clear, they are eager to go help the victim.
Eddie’s inpatients is growing, telling Bobby that they’ve waiting long enough. Hen chiming in that they need to get in there to help the victim. The scene is cleared and the 118 moves in. They are momentarily lost, unsure of which direction to head to or what container number they need to get to. Luckily the officer spots them and directs them the victim.
Eddie, Chim, and Hen all administer aid. I think this is really interesting because I’m use to Hen and Chimney administering aid and Eddie only administering aid when they need extra hands or one of them isn’t available. I like that their able to work so smoothly as a team of three.
Eddie calls over to Bobby asking if he is okay, after being shot at and dodging the bullets.
Buck is in his living room, watching Taylor on the news, reporting about Sue’s accident and the found kidnapper. Taylor knocks on his door, revealing that that recording is rerun. She brought champagne to celebrate, specifically celebrate Justice for the victims. Buck smiles at that distinction.
Episode 12: Treasure Hunt
Message in a bottle rescue:  The 118 pulls up to the scene, they are all wearing sunglasses. They stand side by side as they look over the landscape. Bobby is standing in between Buck and Eddie.
Buck points out that the bottle could have been floating around for months, and there may be no one to rescue. Hen pointing out that it means their search and rescue becomes a search and recovery. Bobby points out the paper the note was written on was from a receipt dated a few days ago. Eddie states that he hopes it wasn’t the victims last meal.
Chim and Eddie are instructed to hop on to the helicopter. Buck is visibly disappointed at the fact that he won’t be apart of the rescue.  Chim tells Eddie to harness up so that he’ll be the one to descend to the victim and grab him.
Chim notices that Buck is disappointed, but tells him that he can go next time.
Eddie spots the victim and descends to him with a bottle. Eddie introduces himself to the victim and as he checks up on him notices he is burning up. He hands the drink to the victim and proceeds to administer aid.
As Eddie is securing the victim’s leg into a splint, the victim is begging for painkillers and to let him continue his journey. Eddie assumes the victim is delirious and calls over the radio for Chimney to prepare fluid, while he denies victims request.
Eddie secures the victim to the harness and they are pulled up into the helicopter.  When the helicopter lands, Buck and Bobby run over with the gurney and help transfer him over.
The 118 standing around the helicopter confused as the victim goes on about a treasure.
Back at the station, they are surrounding the tv, listening to Taylor report about an dead author who has apparently buried treasure for his fans to find. Eddie is standing in between Chim and Hen with his hands in his pockets and Buck is standing next to Bobby with his arms crossed.
Eddie vocalizing his surprise at the sound of 5 million dollars. Everyone has shocked faces as they continue to listen to the story. Buck and Bobby look at each other as the story ends.
The one 118 is gathered around the couch area, each one of them on their phones looking down and reading the poem associated with the treasure hunt.
Buck is the only one to seemingly be excited about the treasure, exploring the what if, if they find it. Everyone else seems to have a difference of opinion, expressing how dangerous and stupid the treasure hunt would be.
The deliberate on how more people will likely join the search and they’ll have more treasure related emergencies. Eddie pointing out that “Your girlfriend’s new story is probably not gonna help out with that.” Buck quickly correcting Eddie by stating, “She’s my friend, not my girlfriend, …” Eddie mockingly shakes his head as Buck continues deny any romance.
Everyone starts to walk away. Notably Eddie is still glued to his phone as he slowly walks away. Buck remains seated as he gets a call from Taylor.
Buck confirms that they had a treasure related call that morning. Taylor reveals that the author’s assistant claims to have seen the treasure himself before he died. Buck points out that Taylor didn’t mention that part in her segment, and she admits it’s because the assistant is concerned over his safety.
Buck looks over at his team as he tells Taylor they can compare note and team up to find the treasure together. I will say I’m not a particular fan of how the telephone call ends with Buck stating not everybody is gonna win as the camera pans back to the 118 in the kitchen, oblivious to the conversation.
I think this is the best time for me to circle back to my first post regarding Season 4, where I mention that we start to notice the writers starting to separate Eddie and Buck. It’s very subtle and they aren’t really keeping them apart, but compared to Season 2 and 3, there is definitely a shift. The distance can be explained as the writers trying to strengthen the over all dynamic of the entire 118, which I fully support. I’m also aware of how us Buddie Shippers can take things a little to far and they needed to have us chill out a bit. Season 4 is obviously not the Season they actively separate them, but we do see less of Buck and Eddie pressed up onto each other, but still implied strong friendship.
Montage of dangerous treasure related calls; Buck, Bobby, and Eddie walking over towards the man trapped under a bear statue. Eddie being sassy and saying to cross of Griffith Bear Park statue off the list.
Bobby tries to stop a man from digging with an excavator, when it becomes apparent that the man won’t stop, he turns around and tells everyone to run for cover. Eddie decides to take this moment and jump through the engine window as everyone runs around the engine to hide behind it.
Eddie is hosing down the area from one side and Buck hoses it down from the other side.
Eddie and Buck are cleaning the engine, talking about the treasure hunt and all the emergencies. Eddie points out that all the people getting hurt are solo acts and no one is working as a team.
Buck theorizes that it’s because people are greedy and don’t want to share the treasure. Eddie pointing out that that may be the flaw in their plan and that two brains are better than one. There is a quick pause as Eddie looks at Buck before suggesting they work together to find the treasure, split the treasure 50/50.
Buck apologizes and admits to already having a deal with Taylor. Eddie shakes his head and looks down, he starts going back to cleaning the engine. Buck looks at Eddie apologetic and offers 1/3 of the treasure.
Taylor leans against Buck’s dining room table as she tells Buck that he has to give Eddie ½ of his cut. Eddie is standing behind the kitchen counter with a beer bottle in his hands as Buck is sitting on the counter with his hands together. Eddie is quick to call out Taylor for being greedy, but she clarifies that she has already promised ½ of her cut to her camera man.
Buck mediates the situation and states that it’s no big deal they can split it in fourth and they still get a million each. Taylor pointing out that ¼ of zero is still zero.
Eddie reveals that he’s done some research on the willow tree thing and mentions a type of plant called an arroyo willow. Buck and Taylor basically revealing that they already looked into it, making Eddie look like the third wheel.  Eddie sits behind them as they hover over the dinning room table.
Eddie is so sassy in this scene. It’s obvious that he’d rather not be doing this whole thing with Taylor, but he doesn’t have a choice. His little sarcastic, “Go Team.” is everything. Poor guy feels left out.
Eddie and Buck set up their plan to get Ravi to reveal any information he has on the treasure hunt. They enact their plan in the locker room, they don’t have a subtle bone in their bodies, because they instantly look at each other and stand closely together and just look obvious. So much so that Chim and Hen catch on to their tricks out side of the locker room.
Fire Ants: Buck walks around the truck, towards Eddie. They set up the hose together. Eddie aiming the hose as Buck turns on the water, trying to get the ants to disburse.
Eddie and Buck standing behind watching Chim and Hen get to work. Eddie is seriously judging the victim. Buck and Eddie start scratching as they wait for Hen and Chim to leave with the victim.
Septic tank mishap: Buck hops out of the truck and Eddie is right behind as Bobby debriefs the situation. Eddie is instructed to extend the aerial ladder over the hole, to help lower Buck down, so he can pull her out of the hole.
Buck is confused as to why he has to do it, Chim reminding him that he was told he could preform the next harness related rescue.
Buck is disgruntled at the situation as he stands there looking around.
Eddie is on top of the engine, controlling the mechanism lowering Buck down the hole. Buck vocalizes that he’s not looking forward to getting down there. As Buck is being lowered, the victim starts drowning. Buck starts to panic; he needs to be closer to grab her.
Bobby instructs Eddie to drop Buck faster. Buck is dunked into the substance and is able to pull the victim up and out of the hole.
Buck, Eddie, and Bobby are outside of the ambulance when victim’s boyfriend, as far as they know, steps out of the ambulance and the ambulance driving away. Buck is removing the suit he just had on. Eddie sniffs the air around Buck, makes a face implying he sticks and walks away.  Bobby vocalizes the disgust and walks away. Buck is left standing alone, annoyed, with the suit half on. (I wonder if they hosed him down, or had him ride outside of the engine)
The 118 is gathered upstairs at the station near the pool table. Chim and Eddie are obviously in the middle of a game when it is revealed to them that the author of the treasure hunt is alive and they are all a part of his research. Buck is leaning against the pool table.
Eddie points out they should be paid for being apart of his research and asks Bobby if Athena knows where the treasure is at.  They officially give up the treasure hunt.
Buck is telling Taylor about the news. They are drinking and talking about how they’ve gotten played. Buck is being flirty in the moment, but Taylor is either too caught up in being upset or is oblivious to his subtle attempt. Taylor is lost in thought as she remembers some important information about the author.
Buck and Eddie walk in on Athena and Bobby, Chim and Hen, already at the spot. Eddie and Buck brought their gear, Eddie explaining they didn’t know the terrane and wanting to be prepared. Eddie than pointing at Chim and Hen about how they brought their med kits.
Buck and Eddie are standing closely together as Buck reveals that Taylor remembered the Author running near the river, as the reason why they knew where to look.
Buck pulling out his calculator to try to figure out how they are going to split the money up 7 ways.
The 118 and Athena are on the bridge looking over into the river, trying to locate where they could find the treasure. Buck and Eddie are still close together. They spot Ravi already at the spot digging.  Eddie asks Buck what 5 million divided by 8 is, Buck responds with he’s not doing any more math.
Ravi brings up the treasure chest to the group, they stand around him as Ravi opens the chest. Buck and Eddie are standing at the separate ends. Buck with his arms cross focused on the chest. Eddie slightly annoyed a rushing Ravi with his hand gestures.
One of my favorite stills of the entire 118;
Tumblr media
The 118 shows up at the author’s home to confront him about the empty treasure chest. They notice the gate and the front door being open. Athena instructs everyone to stay outside while she investigates.  Buck and Eddie are standing near each other as they watch Athena walk in to the building.
Everyone ignores Athena’s command and walk in behind her, they find the dead body on the ground. Police sirens are heard in the distance. Everyone is visibly concerned.
Detective is questioning the entire 118. Trying to piece together the situation. Eddie states, “ We didn’t kill him.” Buck chimes in, “We just wanted to.” Causing Bobby to freak out a little and just say “Buck”
Ravi tries to deny his association with the 118 and each of them turning towards him, silently judging him and death glares.
The 118 minus Ravi, but plus Taylor is at Athena’s house. Taylor and Buck are sitting near each other. Chim is sitting in between Taylor and Eddie. Eddie is sitting diagonally across from Buck. They are rehashing the whole treasure hunt thing. Buck asking what they think happened with the money. Eddie is explaining to Buck that the Treasure never existed.
Buck revealing that he doesn’t trust anyone. Everyone looking at him displeased with that response. Eddie specifically looked at Buck with piercing eyes. Buck corrects himself and specifies that he didn’t mean them.
Buck flirting with Taylor in a not-so-subtle way. Taylor kind of flirting back, but reels it in by saying she’s glad they are friends.  Buck repeating the word friends and being slightly annoyed.
Really wish they kept this dynamic a little longer, or maybe established sooner. This is when I thought Taylor and Buck would eventually be end game. The moment felt like every other lovers to friends story I know, where they end up back together, not that Buck and Taylor where ever really a couple prior.

Tommy/Buck with guilty Eddie prompt: Eddie gets a takes of his own medicine when Buck spends all of his time with Tommy and barely has even a second for him. Eddie's all for sulking until Hen or Chimney clues him in on how he treated Buck while he went gallivanting with Tommy. Now Buck had become Tommy's priority and Eddie is left missing Buck like crazy. How will he get his buddie back?
Author's Note: I do have more to this story IF you want a Buddie Ending. But I wanted to get this out before the show tonight. So there might be a part 2 in the works. Unbeta'd and like zero proofing because I'm making this happen between 2 jobs. But I love you guys, so I needed to get this posted.
Content warning: Petty Eddie is his own warning. Anxiety, doubt, fear, all those emotions. Cliffhanger...
The Timing is Always Wrong
Eddie had initially thought it was amusing that Tommy had been on a date with Buck. Eddie's best friend. Sure, Buck hadn't told him that was happening, or that he had realized he wasn't as straight as everyone thought he was. And that had concerned Eddie for a bit. He and Buck usually talked about stuff. But Eddie had figured it was probably more to do with the fact that Eddie and Tommy were friends. New friends even. Buck probably didn't want to complicate that. That seemed very much like a Buck thing he would do. If the date hadn't gone well, because let's face it Buck did not have the best first date track record. Although, Tommy would have been well adept at dealing with another dinner roll induced 911. Tommy was just as trained as they were. It would be fine. Wouldn't it?
Maybe not.
Eddie was really starting to get annoyed. Buck had blown him off twice over the past few days. He had barely had time for Christopher outside a few calls and picking him up from school when Eddie had an appointment. And now Buck seemed to be glued to his phone. Even on shift. It was like Eddie wasn't there unless they had a call they needed to work directly together on. Even then he was bearing all about Tommy. And it was getting on Eddie's nerves. Eddie couldn't help but glare at his best friend as he walked away grinning with his phone to his ear.
He didn't miss the slight laugh behind him.
Chimney doesn't even seem annoyed when Eddie glares at him.
“What?” Eddie sort of snaps at him.
“Oh nothing, just wondering how it feels on the other side of that turning table,” Chim says.
“What does that even-” Eddie says as he continues to glare. “If you have something to say, Chim, spit it out. I'm not in the mood.”
“Oh that much is obvious,” Chim says, and Eddie might actually punch his best friend’s brother in law. Wow, Frank would not approve of that. Bobby either. Buck too. Okay, maybe he needed to get a handle on this.
“Chim…” Eddie starts.
“You really don't see it, do you?” Chim asks, amusement clear in his tone. “Wow, you two are just…okay, you're annoyed that Buck's blowing you off for his new guy, who happens to be Tommy. And you don't see the irony In that?”
“Marisol and-”
“I'm not talking about your girlfriend,” Eddie says. “I'm talking about Tommy Kinard. Buck looked like a kicked puppy every time you had plans with Tommy or were too busy to spot him or shoot hoops. Thought the military was supposed to make you guys more observant, not whatever that all is. Now not only does Buck have Tommy's attention, but Tommy has Buck's and you hate it. But then again you've always hated Buck's partners. For the record, the rest of us just hope you two get back on the same page, don't want to risk another grocery store-”
“That was different and you know it,” Eddie states.
“Same ‘Mom and dad fighting’ energy that makes these shifts weird. So just tell your best friend you miss him and quit glaring at everyone.” Chimney doesn't stay for a reaction. He had probably crossed a line already. Honestly, Maddie had told him that Eddie and Buck needed to sit down and talk like adults, but Chim had pointed out neither of them were good at that. They had both agreed on that point.
Had Eddie really hared everyone Buck was with. Sure, he hated Taylor, but that's because it was Taylor Kelly. He had valid reasons for that. And okay, he was NOT Abby’s biggest fan when she had just showed back up. Alright, and Allie, well, Allie had been not terrible. Eddie, Carla, and Allie had their work cut out for them getting Buck back on his feet. Allie just couldn't keep up. And we'll, Eddie was pretty sure Natalia was just a misguided trauma reaction. Eddie didn't hate them all, per se, more he didn't always like who Buck was when he was with them. And maybe that wasn't fair. Eddie had his share of bad relationships. His relationship with Shannon was a mess that never got closure. That had led him down a bad path. Ana has been good for Christopher, and him, but it wasn't…it just wasn't anymore. He had felt like he was trying to fool himself back then. And Marisol…With Buck busy with Tommy he would have more time for Marisol and Christopher to get to know each other. Did he really want that? Did he see a future with Marisol? Did Christopher? Christopher would probably be happy Buck and Tommy were together. They were like his two favorite people recently and that mostly didn't bother him, right. Eddie could see that Tommy and Buck could be good for each other. But like, could he see all five of them being a- what would that even be? Would Buck pick a life with Tommy over one with him and Christopher? Did- Nah, this was Buck. Eddie, Buck and Christopher have been through so much together. Christopher would be non negotiable, even Taylor Kelly had known that. But…in the future, who would know.
Huh.
Every time Eddie looked into his future Buck was always there. His best friend. The women in their lives came and went but not Buck. Buck was there through Shannon. He was there before and after Ana. Buck was there at not only Eddie's worst moments, but vice versa.
Eddie thinks about the bombing. The tsunami. The well. The shooting. And that stupid storm. Three minutes and seventeen seconds that were probably the most terrifying three minutes and seventeen seconds of his life. And that's something he still tries not to think about because Eddie wasn't afraid of his own death. He'd survived being shot twice now and buried his wife. But losing Buck was scarier. Losing Shannon had been difficult, but losing Buck would be unbearable. Was he losing Buck? Is that why he hated Taylor and Natalia so much?
Nothing changes other than Eddie's attitude over the next few days. Their next shift gets off to an unusual start.
Buck does a double take as he looks up from texting Tommy. Eddie looked…odd. He was frowning and just staring off. But before he could say anything Eddie seemed to shake off whatever was on his mind and headed towards the loft. He didn't look particularly happy. Maybe he had gotten a call. Maybe something happened with Christopher. That had Buck putting his phone in his pocket and hurrying after his best friend. He caught up to him on the stairs.
“Eddie, hey,” Buck starts, which of course has Eddie stopping halfway up the stairs to look at him.
“Yeah, Buck, what you need?”
That was an odd way to reply. Well not really, but for Eddie it was. “Need? I don't-” Buck shakes his head. “Are you okay man? Is Christopher okay? Did Carla call or -”
“He was fine when I left…wait did Carla call you?” Eddie asks, now even more on edge. The father pulls out his phone. He didn't have any missed calls. He had a text from Marisol he hasn't replied to, but nothing important. He looks back at Buck.
“Me?” Buck shakes his head. Okay that might not have been the best thing to start with. “No, I…you look like you just got bad news or something. I was worried something happened to Chris or maybe your abuela.”
Eddie can't help but soften a bit at that. How could Eddie ever doubt how much his son meant to his best friend. Buck loves Christopher as much as Eddie did. Eddie felt bad for even considering it.
“Christopher is fine as far as I know,” Eddie tries to reassure him. “Abuela too.”
“Then what's wrong?” Buck genuinely asks.
Eddie hesitates. Buck must notice because he's now dragging Eddie along to a less busy are of the loft.
“I know things have been…off, since…you know,” Buck isn't sure he is making any sense. “You can still talk to me, you know that right? Like it won't leave this.” And the way Buck gestures between the two of them, paired with the fact Buck still had a hold of his wrist didn't help Eddie feel any better about anything. But he didn't hate it. Well, Eddie was having a day of revelations he hadn't expected to have. And it was draining.
He must stay silent too long because Buck adds, “I won't tell Tommy, not if you don't want me to. I mean-”
Eddie bites back a sigh. Why is all this happening now? He really needed to set up an appointment with Frank.
“I know, Buck.” Eddie says honestly.
“Okay, so…what's going on?” Buck asks. And the look of genuine concern on Buck's face tugs at something in Eddie's chest.
“I'm okay, Buck,” Eddie says, and he can tell Buck isn't buying it. So he cuts off whatever argument Buck might have. “I mean it. It's not an ‘I’m fine’ like before when I thought I needed to be. This isn't that. I just…”
“That's good but now you're freaking me out a bit,” Buck says. “Just what?”
“Honestly, I'm not sure,” Eddie says with all sincerity. The former medic isn't sure what he is right now. He knows he is having way more feelings than he should and he knows he sure as hell can't tell Buck that because Buck just started a new relationship. It would be selfish for Eddie to say anything now. Not when Eddie isn't even sure what he is feeling.
“Eddie,” Buck starts, moving to grip his friend's shoulders. He wanted to make sure he had Eddie's full attention. Buck even ignores the way his phone goes off in his pocket. “Did you have a fight with Marisol or something? I don't think I've seen you like this since…”
“Not exactly,” Eddie needs to stop this conversation before he says or does something stupid. “like I said, I don't know. Probably something I should talk to Frank about.”
“Probably a good idea,” Buck nods, pulling away as he does. “But you know-”
“I know I can call you if I need to, Buck. I would just hate to-” Eddie is cut off by Buck’s phone going off again. “You need to get that?”
Buck gets the phone out of his pocket and isn't sure what he should do.
And Eddie can tell Buck is torn as he looks at his phone. Eddie sees Tommy's name and photo on the screen. “You should get that.” To make the choice easier on his friend, Eddie heads to the kitchen. Mentally kicking himself. Maybe Chimney was right and he should just tell Buck he misses him. It's not a lie and it's not like that would be out of the norm. He was his best friend.
Buck answers the phone right before it goes to voicemail.
“Everything alright?” Tommy asks.
“Yeah, well, maybe, I don't know,” Buck says.
“A lot of conflicting answers there, Evan.”
“Sorry,” Buck frowns.
“No need to be, but are you okay?”
“I'm fine, but somethings off with Eddie and it's weird, last time he was like this was when he was after he got shot, was having panic attacks and broke up with Ana.”
“Not having panic attacks now is he? Seemed fine last week. And he and Marisol seemed alright the other night.”
“I thought so too. I don't think he's had a panic attack in awhile. He or Chris would have told me.
“But you think he might be heading that way? Or that's he's better at hiding it.”
“I don't know,” Buck admits. He hates not knowing. “He said he should talk to Frank, his-”
“Therapist, right? That's a good thing, isn't it? He knows he needs help and sounds like he's getting it.”
“I mean yeah, but…” Buck has seen Eddie at his worst. But it felt like Eddie was pushing him out.
Even on the phone Tommy can tell the situation is tearing his partner up. “But he's your best friend and you're worried.”
“Yeah…” Buck nods despite Tommy not being able to see it.
“That's a good thing, Evan,” Tommy tries to assure him. “You guys have been through a lot, been friends for a long time. Would be weird if you didn't worry.”
“I guess so.”
“I know so, you're a sweet guy, Evan, why do you think I like you so much?”
It doesn't get better over the next few days. The opposite happens. Buck could not shake the feeling Eddie was keeping something from him. That he was losing his best friend, again.
“Are we okay?” Buck asks. “Because I don't feel like we are okay.”
“I broke it off with Marisol,” Eddie states.
“What? Why? I thought you guys were getting serious? What happened?” Buck asks, not even noticing that Eddie had managed to avoid his question.
“It just didn't work,” Eddie says with a shrug.
“Didn't you say that about Ana too?”
“Because it's true,” Eddie states. “And yes, I'm aware the common factor on that is me. Tía Pepa made that very clear.”
“What else did Tía Pepa say?” Buck asks. He knew the women in the Diaz family were a force to reckon with.
“A lot, as usual,” Eddie sighs. “But she's not wrong.”
“Okay…” Buck was wondering where this might go.
“She told me to figure out what I wanted because clearly what has been happening isn't working and she's running out of friends with daughters.”
Buck chuckles, “that sounds like her.”
“And Frank agreed. I had to figure it out.”
“Did you?”
“I think so,” Eddie nervously notes.
That makes Buck perk up. “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” Eddie says. “But the timing…”
“Who is it?” Buck asks. The younger firefighter seemed eager to know but internally he was torn. If Eddie had figured it out and found a person to share the rest of his life with, that could mean a lot of changes. Buck might get pushed aside. And that would ruin Buck.

you'll be a real good listener, you'll be honest, and one day you'll be brave [1k | 5x17 coda |uncle!buck | feelings realization (in more ways then one) | phone calls] {ao3} a/n: i srsly have no idea where this came from lmao. i started with the picture of buck talking through things with jee and then eddie called and then it was a thousand words 🤷. title inspired by a better son/daughter by rilo kiley. takes place a few minutes after the end of 5x17, major spoilers.
Buck stares at his niece, she's sitting in his lap, leaning against his legs that are propped up on the coffee table, and is studying the hem of her shirt intently.
"Eddie really chose the worst week to go to Texas huh kid," he sighs rubbing his thumbs over her toes. She looks up at him and scrunches her face, shakes her head and lets out a "Buh!"
"Sorry, I'm not pleasant company Jee," he pauses, "Your parents are being real silly you know that? But they've done this before. Took a minute. And then you happened!" He pokes her belly and she lets out a shriek of giggles, "But whatever happens, I hope you know you have the best mom in the whole world. She fought so many battles to have you, to be with you. And your dad, well, he put up with me, and survived so much too. You're a really lucky kid. But mostly cause you have me for an uncle," he smiles softly, and Jee's eyes begin to droop as he brings her to his chest, his hand spanning her entire back as he stands and makes his way to her room.
He sits in the rocking chair and reads her Pat the Bunny a couple times and then hums a few songs until she is solidly asleep. He just holds her for a moment. And a lump settles in his throat as a realization washes over him. He wants this. He has this. Well not this exactly, but something close, and close enough.
He sets her down in her crib, and she shifts and snuffles, but ultimately settles, taking a deep breath and sighing.
His phone is buzzing on the coffee table when he returns to the living room. He doesn't even look, and just hits the side button, sending the call to voicemail. Because it was probably Taylor. Calling to explain herself. And he can't yell at her. Not with Jee asleep down the hall. He doesn't want to talk to her anyway. He's not even sure what he would say.
His phone starts buzzing incessantly again. So he answers. Because she'll probably just keep calling. Even though that doesn't sound too much like her. So he answers, not even looking at the screen.
"Look Taylor, I can't do this with you right now. Jee is asleep, and if I yell-"
"It's not Taylor," Eddie's warm voice washes over him,
"Oh," he breathes out, the tension falling out of his shoulders, "your dad picked out a really shitty week to have a party. Chris isn't on the phone is he?"
"No, he's asleep," Buck can hear the soft smile that plays across Eddie's lips, "So, what happened? Why are you with Jee? Maddie and Chim okay?"
"Jonah kidnapped Hen and Chimney," he takes a breath, "Eddie, he killed him twice and brought him back twice thank God. He killed Claudette. They're both fine, just staying overnight at the hospital for observation, but Eds-"
"Holy shit. And where the piece Taylor fit in?"
"She helped put the Claudette pieces together. Or rather, had the evidence in the form of news footage. She said it was off the record but-"
"She reported it anyway," he doesn't question.
"She had this look in her eye, called it all fascinating. God I feel so stupid. She hasn't changed an inch in three years."
"You believed in her. Saw the good. That doesn't make you stupid. That's one of the things that makes you, you Buck."
"How's it going over there?" Buck asks,
"I'll answer but don't think that doesn't mean we're done talking about your stuff."
Buck rolls his eyes and huffs out a breath.
"So, guess who's dad has been hiding heart issues for over a year?"
"You're kidding."
"Three stents, Buck," he sighs, "and all it took was me berating him for making me grow up too fast."
"And you said that you didn't want any drama."
"Turns out I am the drama," he laughs a little, "May taught me that. We talked more later. I cried in front of him, Buck. I told him about my panic attacks, and therapy. And he told me he didn't want to miss anymore of my life. I never thought-"
"I'm so proud of you Eddie. So proud," Buck squeezes the phone in his hand wishing he could look Eddie in the eye right now. "And I'm gonna tell you again when I can hug you and- But I am so proud of you. And I'm happy for you. For both of you."
And silence washes over them. Listening to each other breathe.
"I have to break up with her don't I?" Buck sighs after a few minutes.
"You said it not me."
"And it's not just this one thing. I don't know that I'm in love with her. I kept telling myself that I had to be, cause she said she loved me. But when I think about the future she's not the one I'm thinking about. I think about my kids and my future and I-I don't see her, I don't see little red haired and blue eyed babies. And I need partner. Someone I can trust. Someone who doesn't make me look over my shoulder at every turn. Someone who has my-" he swallows the last word before he says it.
"Yeah, I think that's what we're all looking for at the end of the day," Buck hears the smile again, "and to quote you, that's not how you talk about someone you're in love with,"
"Yeah," he swallows, "Well, it's late there. And we both has weird days. So I'll let you get to bed. Give Chris a hug for me. See you at the airport tomorrow."
"Will do. See you tomorrow. Goodnight, Buck."
"Night Eddie."
He hangs up the phone and takes a breath. He pads down the hallway to check on Jee, still sound asleep. And grabs a pillow and a blanket from the closet before settling on the couch. It hits him, what he almost said, "I think about my kids and I see Chris...Someone who has my back."
"Shit," he whispers to the ceiling.

I lied, one last episode thought.
I love the writing of the episode, I may or may not have an actual script from the show that this writer has written. I love her style. No you will never see it, it’s mine.
But…
There were a lot of things in the coma dream that went unresolved, that as a writer… irk me.
Buck mentions getting Maddie from Doug, get her safe, see her with Chim. None of that happens. There’s a brief line from Chim at the end.
Buck being a teacher and having kids. Nothing happens there.
Buck finding out about Eddie. Nothing happens there. He briefly sees Chris later, but it changes nothing.
He didn’t fix anything, which I know you could be saying “But Gabbi that’s the point! He’s a fixer and he couldn’t fix anything in that world!”
And I say, “Yeah! That’s so true! Could be so deep and meaningful!”
Except… he didn’t try.
He had a conversation with Maddie, that’s about it. The rest of the episode was about Buck realizing he made impacts on Bobby and being proud that he’s Buck, dealing with being called spare parts, and then saying he’s a firefighter. Which is amazing and would’ve been a great episode, except those things lasted less than 5 minutes.
This is what would’ve made more narrative sense and would’ve worked with the (about) 45 minutes they get of air time:
Cut the stuff about Chimney and his dad/step-mom. Not relevant to this episode.
Cut Albert and Chim talking about Chim being a dad. Not relevant to the episode.
Cut Buckley parent stuff. (I’m going with pre-6b Buckleys and how they used to be, along with pre-6x10 Buck baby donor thoughts)
Now, have everything go as it was up through Buck finding out about Eddie. Except Cap isn’t dead, he’s just struggling as bad as he was when Buck first joined the station. Worse maybe. Quiet, stoic, drinking on the DL.
From there, what the episode should’ve been (and following the progression of past seasons and 6a), was for Buck to get his 118 family back together again.
He gets Maddie away from Doug, she meets Chim— you see the connection in their eyes.
He sees his life as a teacher, sees the cards, sees drawings, sees a class portrait, he realizes that he has these kids, but they aren’t his. He loves them, but *wipes his tear* he has a real kid to get back to. (Intercut this part with Chris in the hospital room) He knows he has to get Eddie and Chris back together so—
He gets Carla. He introduces Carla to Eddie and Chris is magically back (it’s a dream world).
His parents can still be loving, but Buck’s focus isn’t on them, it’s on his fire family because he realizes that they are the people who love him no matter what.
He puts the pieces back together, because he’s Buck. He is more than spare parts. He’s a firefighter. He’s his own person. He has a family. He’s happy.
He wakes up surrounded by the people who love him, and he goes home with Bobby, “let’s go home, son.”
Instead we had an episode where everything was touched on, nothing was fixed— but with no resolve of why, nothing answered for Buck in regards to his happiness, and it all stuck with a weird “I love my family” idea… but it was the wrong family?? It was an episode where the people who he struggled to leave in the coma dream were his parents who had been awful to him, and then irl were being nice. So it wasn’t like he was missing anything by staying. If his parents were still how they were seasons ago (“love me anyway”) then, yeah, leaving them would’ve been hard. That would’ve made more sense. But instead he went from picking them up from the airport, having family dinners, feeling happy with them, to the coma dream where when he woke up afterwards his parents were still nice. It lacked the tension that would’ve existed if there was a difference between irl parents and coma parents, but it was too subtle.
What should’ve made it hard to leave is that the 118 he got back together was going to miss him so much, that he was a part of them, that he felt like he was home already but he knew he wasn’t. The whole thing with him running out of time would’ve still been in the episode. So he had to leave his fake family to get back to his real one.
I think that’s what’s driving me nuts. The potential for this episode was amazing. Everything was aligned for it to be amazing. And it was incredible! Just… lacking.
The only way to fix what happened is if the Buckley parents turn out to still be evil later this season, and are only being nice because they need something, this would set Buck off… except that there’s no time to resolve that and we’d need another coma where he can realize things.

Bad Luck
AO3 LINK
Attempted Rape/Non-Con
Drugged Drink
Angst
much angstier than my normal writing
The calls concerning kids are always the hardest. Not to say that other calls aren't hard, but these ones hit especially hard. Buck takes a sip of his drink, ice hitting his lips. The soda is sweet, if a little diluted by the melting ice. He replays the call in his head. He knows he shouldn't. It's doesn't do any good to linger on things you can't change. But he can't help himself. He knows he should go over to Eddie's, or invite Hen or Chim or someone out with him. But he just wants to be alone right now. Plus, he's not having any alcohol, so he can drive himself home. He'd like to drink, but he can't bring himself to do it. He knows that one drink will turn into two, then three, and so on in order to forget the day.
God, the boy couldn't have been older than ten. The family had gotten into a bad car crash getting off the highway. Some drunk driver ran them off the road and straight into construction equipment. They were lucky that everyone came out alive. When they had pulled up, they saw the mangled car and automatically assumed that there would be at least one casualty. Hen and Chim had checked on the parents while Buck checked on the kid. The mom was unconscious. The dad was fine, just some bruising. He kept screaming for his son.
It reminded Buck of how he screamed for Christopher during the tsunami. That guttural, terrified scream that rips your throat to shreds. The dad didn't calm down until he saw that his son was alright. The boy had a broken leg and a big gash on his arm that needed stitches, but he was otherwise unharmed. The poor thing was terrified though. He wouldn't stop crying. Eddie did his best to calm him down, but he didn't stop sobbing until his dad was there.
The mom was in bad shape when they got her out. She had been pinned, the metal cutting into her chest. She had a broken clavicle, arm, and a bad concussion. She crashed once on the way to the hospital, according to Hen. They brought her back but it was touch and go for a couple of minutes. Buck doesn't know if she made it through or not. Once they drop them off at the hospital, their job is done. Buck hates that sometimes.
Buck takes a last sip of his soda. The few drops that are left are basically just water anyway. The bartender comes over and grabs the cup, asking if he'd like a refill. Buck nods. Usually he's much chattier. But at the moment he just wants to be alone with his thoughts. The dad's screams keep replaying in his head. He can't help but wonder if that's what he sounded like when he was searching for Christopher. And the way the father ran to his son and held him like he could disappear at any moment, that was the same way that Eddie had held Chris. Buck hates that the memories of that seem to permeate through any other thought he could have.
"Is this seat open?" A man asks. Buck nods and the man takes a seat. He orders a gin and tonic. He swirls it once before taking a sip. "You drinking alone tonight too?"
"Yeah."
Buck hopes the conversation ends there. But, like always, he has bad luck.
"Bad day?"
"Yup."
"Care to talk about it?"
"Prefer not to."
The man shrugs his shoulders and takes another sip of his drink. As he's drinking, a tipsy girl knocks into his stool and the drink splatters all over his front. He swears under his breath. The girl is already gone in the crowd, probably not even aware she bumped into anyone.
"Mind passing me a napkin?"
Buck turns to grab a couple from the pile next to him. He hands it to the stranger, who thanks him. He does his best to mop up the liquid, but most of it has already soaked into his flannel. He pulls it off and ties it around his waist, opting to stay in just his t-shirt. Buck can't help but notice that the guy has a small tattoo on his forearm. It's of a wolf snarling. Kind of tacky, but the illustration is well done.
The man notices him staring. "I got it when I was younger. Thought it would make me look cool." He chuckles a bit.
"Wolves are cool. Did you know that that wolves can run more than 30 miles an hour?" He finds himself reciting a fact he had learned from Chris earlier. Eddie always jokes that between the two of them, he and Chris are practically Google. The two of them are constantly trading facts, about all sorts of things. Chris gets the Nat Geo Kids magazine in the mail, and the two of them read it together. Buck would never admit it, but he finds the magazines just as enjoyable as Chris does. They may be for kids, but they've got a lot of cool information.
Speaking of, he promised he would make Chris pancakes in the morning, so he should probably get going. Buck chugs the rest of his drink and motions for the check. The bartender quickly obliges. He places a twenty on the table and signs the receipt with the provided pen. The stranger tries to engage him in further conversation, but Buck ignores him. He really just wants to go home. He has to dodge several people, almost getting elbowed in the neck by one man attempting to dance. At least, Buck thinks it's dancing. It's so bad it's hard to tell.
He finally makes his way out the door. He has a slight headache setting in. Probably from all the noise inside. He rubs his eyes. His arms feel heavy. He looks at his phone. It's not even that late, it's only ten. Maybe the exhaust of today is catching up to him. He starts the walk to his jeep. He's half way there when he as to stop and brace himself against a wall. God, he feels weird. Really weird. His gut churns. He can't get his legs to move. He sinks to the dirty cement below.
Something is wrong. Something is very, very wrong.

6x11 Reactions as I Watch
A collection of the disjointed thoughts I had about the episode as I watched it because I had to watch it over the course of a few hours instead of in one go
(under the cut because it got long)
The huddle omg
Buck making Daniel vaguely bitter is insane, I’m sure that means nothing
The Big Bear picture in Maddie’s living room ahhhhhhh
Jee into G
HOLY SHIT DOUG
credit where it’s due, the Buckley parents came to the hospital this time.
Buck’s face the whole time Doug is talking is priceless
I WANT TO KNOW WHY THEY CALL HIIIM CHIMNEY
Why arent you married
HE STOPPED BREATING WHEN HE HEARD ABOUT BOBBY
buck has now been struck by 2 random acts of nature
THE PARENTS NEVER ENTER THE ROOM
Albert I am begging you to leave Chim alone
The rewritten history lesson thing makes sense but I hate it (post to follow)
CHRIS INSISTED
had to pause to cry jfc that scene hurt, thanks Gavin. honorable mentions to Ryan and Aisha who were also great
on a lighter note, I will now picture all of buck’s problem solving process as if he has a mental Chim and Hen talking him
Mom brought 2  you brought 1 brb crying again
Peter Krauss has murdered me and I am thanking him
Buckleys still wont enter the room ugh
Because there was never a doubt in Buck’s mind that Hen and Chim would help him if he asked them. cool cool, I’m gonna be so normal about this
Oh man that hallway chase scene was not great for my brain but man did it do its job
Oh peter, turns out you will be killing me multiple times tonight, I’m so ready
I WAS NOT READY OH NO
Athena really said I will mom you back into consciousness and if Buck were any further in his process, it would have worked
The montage of memories ahhhhhhh
COLDPLAY Fix You how dare you
Chim <3
I’M ALWAYS GOING TO FEEL GUILTY FOR THAT ONE
Oh. I have too many bitter feelings about the Buckley parents to be satisfied with that. I’m going to pretend he was speaking solely to the parents that could have been. Moving on.
I have a family... not the same one I have here, YES SIR YOU DO
Oh the buckleys entered the room finally. Just for what might have been the end. I’ll be back to look at symbolism later
Daniel being a manifestation of his self hatred who
OHHH we’re getting some Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde action, love that
Oliver, please play more villains, I’m begging you. for science
FOR ME AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
The way maddie doesn’t look surprised while his parents do, I am going to chew on a brick
2 pizzas lmao
hahaha yeah, lets talk about his traumas please. it will only take like a full season of just him
The doctor looks. so fucking done. like, seems very done with him already.
EVERYONEEEEEE
Once again I point out that the Buckleys? Not in the room. Even when random other guy was (who I want to know, please) Oh wait there’s 2 of them? tell me who you are please
Awwww they’re playing cards when he didn’t with his dream family (there’s a whole cant count in dreams thing that was big in Sterek that I’m co-opting here for personal reasons)
Bobby was different because his usual method of giving Buck advice and letting him decide was going to be too slow, this is my personal headcanon now
‘It’s better here’ where he actually gets to have the dad he chose and who chose him back
Mmmmmmm if Chim wants to fix things with his dad, fine. I will not be satisfied until they duke it out in some way shape or form. And I mean them, not Albert or Myung or anyone else. Them.
I have to give Kenneth Choi props, the realization look he gave us there makes me think there’s some interaction we didn’t get to see that was... important
awwwww, Jee calls him Pop Pop
‘she called me funny’ alright I can see them being related lol
I’ll take that. It wasn’t forgiveness, it was an open hand.
‘I’m getting you a couch’ no, you’ve been here like less than three minutes, please at least pretend you have respect for his boundaries
oh god they’re staying
awwwwwwwwwwww the birthmark kiss!!!1
But I’m putting my money on ‘it’s kinda nice’ turns into ‘please fucking leave’ really fast.
Personal issues with the directions the Buckleys seem to be going in, this episode was really good!!!!!!!!!!!
Final thoughts: EVERYONE WAS AMAZING, GOOD JOB

the more i think about eddie and his sisters, the more intrigued i am. because if the writers wanted to show that eddie has at least a somewhat good/close relationship with sophia and adriana, it could. they have single lines all the time that are meant to tell us what happened between episodes and off-screen
so they could easily throw in off handed lines about like, eddie saying that chris wants to go to summer camp this year instead of spending a week with one of his sisters for some cousin time. or that one of his sisters asked him and chris to spend christmas with them, or something like that. but they never have
and they also didn't have sophia or adriana defend eddie to their parents after shannon's funeral or during eddie begins when eddie came home from afghanistan and his parents had that welcome home party. and they very pointedly did not have his sisters do anything to defend or support eddie in those instances i suspect for a reason, since it wouldn't have been that hard to have one of his sisters to at least be like "hey mom and dad, back off, chill"
and so they've never written anything to indicate he has a close relationship with his sisters which then it's like, why?? i mean sure, it could just be that eddie simply isn't close with his sisters for no reason other than the fact that that's just how it is sometimes (that's how it is with me and my brother). but this is 911 so there's probably something deeper there from their childhood that is the reason eddie and his sisters aren't particularly close. and i am VERY curious as to what that reason is. like does eddie, on some level, resent his sisters because they got the unconditional love and support from their parents that he doesn't seem to get because they're girls and he's the lone son? were his parents the same way with his sisters and instead of it being something the 3 of them bonded over, they distanced themselves from each other instead?? idk i've just been thinking about this a lot lately

Hope and Love
Tumblr media
Can you write an eddie / reader story where the reader is pregnant and in the end the doctors tell her her life is in danger that she has to take the baby away? She and Eddie fight about it. She wants to keep him, and he doesn't want her to die. In short, around her 8th month, she goes to see the 118 team to have dinner with them, they are called on a mission so she remains alone in the barracks until they come back. When the team returns they find traces of blood and the reader on the ground unconscious ... Chim and Hen take her to the hospital ... There the baby (it's a boy) must be taken out urgently and the doctors tell eddie that the reader is in a coma ... she stays asleep for 2 weeks and when Buck (who is her brother) comes to see her she makes a stop! He calls Eddie to come asap. They wait together and when the doctors arrive they announce that she is awake! She finally meets her baby and Eddie proposes to her.
I'd love to read a story like this too muchI'd love to read a story like this too much 😊
@fairyhope028
“I’m sorry I wish I had better news for you Miss (Your last Name). But this is where we are and the two choices you have are to either accept the risk and continue with the pregnancy or terminate.” the doctor said
When he said those words to you it felt like knives being stabbed in your heart and your whole stomach just felt so sick. In your mind there wasn’t another option you were going to keep this baby. You had to at least try.
“Thank you doctor well talk about it.” Your boyfriend Eddie said
The doctor got up and left the room and Eddie turned to you and grabbed your hand and looked at you in the eyes with such a sad broken look.
You know this was hard on him to because he was so happy when you told him you were pregnant he was such a good dad. And he was hurting just like you.
“Look Y/N when it comes down to it I need you here with me and Chris he needs you were a family we can try again.” eddie said
“This isn’t a discussion Eddie. This is our child and I have to at least try. I can’t do what your asking me to do.” you said with tears in your eyes.
“What about me don’t I get a say Y/N come on just take some time a think even if the baby is okay I don’t want them to grow up without a mom like Chris just think about that.” Eddie said pleading with you.
“ I love you Eddie so much and you know how much I want this and even If I do die I know they're going to have a big and happy family to grow up with like Chris they would be okay but my body is my decision.” you said
“Fine” Eddie said you could tell he was mad because that's all he said
You two left the doctors office feeling defeated that day. It was supposed to be a happy day not such a sad one
Eight Months Later..
Everything was going as best they could.  We found out we were having a little boy.  Eddie invited me to come to dinner at the 118 that day. I think because I was so close to my due date that he was worried about me.
So instead of causing him more anxiety I went and brought some food along with me.
The moment Eddie saw my car pulling in he ran down and opened up the car and helped me get out
“Mi amor are you okay you should have called an uber are you okay.” he asked rubbing his hand all over your belly and back.
He took your hand and walked you in the firehouse and sat you down at the kitchen table. Everyone walked over to you and greeted you and asked a million questions if you were okay.
“I’m fine everyone no pain or nothing i’m doing good I appreciate the concern I really do.” you said
Buck was worse though I mean he basically had a whole emergency room on stand by and you know he was worried with you being his sister but between him and Eddie it sometimes stressed you more.
You tried to understand be grateful for the help but it was sometimes overwhelming for you.
Bobby brought over dinner and yelled at everyone to stop hovering over you and let you breathe. Which you are grateful for. Just as dinner ended the bell rang and everyone had to go.
Buck and Eddie looked over at you with sad and worried eyes.
“Are you gonna be okay here by yourself sitting here alone.” Buck said
“I’m fine and it’s not like anyone has a choice so you both go and be careful. “ you said
They knew you were right and left to go be heroes.
A little bit went by and next thing you know you felt this pain in your stomach that you never felt before. It scared the hell out of you.
You got up and saw some blood coming from your legs and you tried to get up to the walk to the bathroom but you felt your legs give out and everything went black.
Eddie and Buck were basically jumping out of there skin when they pulled up to the firehouse.
They didn’t even let the trucks come to a stop before they ran out and went upstairs to find you.
There worst fear came true when they saw you laying on the floor with blood around you.
“Omg what the hell Y/N” eddie yelled
Buck ran over to you and tried to shake you but nothing.
They picked you up and gently carried you and Hen and Chim ran over and saw what was going on.
They pulled the stretcher out and began to asses you.  Bobby had to pull the both of them off you to let them do their job.
“It looks like it might be her uterus repurting but were not sure were taking her to st marks there best equit to handle her.” Hen said
Eddie hopped in the back with Chim and Bobby and Buck got into the captain's car and followed behind you.
“It’s going to be okay, you and our son are both going to be okay. You hear me stay strong mi amor.” Eddie said, holding your hand the whole way there.
Doctors and nurses were waiting for you and pulled you into the room. Eddie had to stay behind and chim and hen sat with him with Buck and Bobby came in a few minutes later.
“What’s the news anything” Buck said
“No Nothing were all waiting.” Chim said
Time felt like it was going by so slow and the fear and anxiety just took over. The waiting room was so silent and Eddie tried keeping it together even though he was dying inside.
Then the doctor came out and Eddie and Buck both jumped out of their seats so fast.
“Her placenta ruptured and she lost a lot of blood and we did have to preform a crash c-section. The baby is fine and he’s in the NICU for pre cautions. Unfortunately Y/N had to be put into a medically induced coma to let her body heal.” the doctor said
Eddie felt his heart plummet into his stomach. In one way he was so happy his son was here and he was okay but then on the other hand he was so worried about you.
“Can I see my son.” eddie asked
“Of  course one of the nurses will take you up.” the doctor said.
Buck and the rest of the 118 went to see you. And sat by you.
Eddie went down to the NICU and was able to hold your son.
“Hello I’m so happy your here I love you and I can’t believe your here. And I know your mom can’t wait to see you either.” he said to his son.
Two Weeks had passed and Eddie was at the hospital every day with your son and Chris. When he wasn’t there Buck was there or someone from the 118 was there.
Finally one day your came and the doctors were able to wake you up.
Buck was sitting by your side that day. Holding your hand and talking to you. When suddenly the tube you had helping you breathe started to resit.
Which was a good thing. The doctors told Buck that you looked like you were finally waking up and He called Eddie to hurry up down with Chris and The baby
Your head felt heavy and your eyes slowly opened up. With Eddie, Chris and your son by your side.
Your first thought was your baby.
“My baby is he okay.” you asked looking over at Eddie. Who was crying happy tears.
“Yeah Mi Amor he’s okay he’s right here.” he said putting the baby in your arms.
You started crying and it was a feeling you never felt before holding your child you were so happy.
“He needs a name, we waited for you.” Eddie said
“ How about Lucas.” Chris yelled out
And you and Eddie both laughed and thought it was a good name.
“Yeah I like it.” you said and Eddie agreed.
Buck had called the rest of the 118 and they all gathered by your bedside happy to see you.
Eddie said he had an Important question to ask while everyone was here and you and everyone else was so confused.
“Y/N I Love you so much and these past two weeks and even eight months had only made me realize that through every hard moment and every good moment I want you by my side so please do my the honor of marrying me.” Eddie said pulling out a ring
“Yes of course I love you.” you said and Eddie leaned down to kiss you.
The rest of the 118 Cheered. And congratulated you guys. But Buck Pulled Eddie aside
“You hurt my sister and I will end you.” Buck said
“Don’t worry I won’t.” eddie said
A while later everyone headed out and Eddie sat next to you Chris and the Baby both sleeping in the room.
“ I love you so much I love our family thanks for saying no 9 months ago.” Eddie said
“I Love you so much I’ll do anything for my family.” you said.

pt.2: Loss to Love
--
Was love real ?
Was it worth it ?
All the pain and broken hearts and despair, was it all worth it if in the end, I got to come home to you ?
No idea where you were going, where you’d end up or who you’d end up being but you never let that stop you. That’s how you could yourself outside the fire station. You weren't looking for a job, in fact you were looking for someone, someone you had lost so many years ago. The station was quiet, not sure if you were allowed to be in here when no one else was, you paced the empty station.
The sound of a horn made you look up, there was a fire engine that was waiting to reverse in and you were in the way. The door opening and shutting, a man walked towards you. “Excuse me, you can’t be standing there” he says, pointing to the side of the station, you step out of the way, allowing the truck to reverse in. You watched as he instructed the driver, the back of his jacket read Nash. He wasn't who you were looking for but maybe he could help you. The fire engine began emptying, one by one they stepped out.
“Can I help you ?” the same man returned to you.
“Um, I think you can. What’s your name if you don’t mind me asking ?”
“Bobby Nash, you are ?” he stuck his hand out
“Y/n “ you shook his hand. He had a fatherly aura to him, the type that made you feel safe and comfortable, like you didn’t have to worry about anything. Bobby smiled at you, “what can I help you with, y/n?”
“I’m actually looking for a friend. I lost touch with him a while- actually more than a while, it's been years”
“I’d love to help but what makes you think I can ?”
“All I know is that he's a firefighter. I just thought on the off chance, maybe you’d be able to point me in the right direction”
“Who’s your friend ?” Bobby asked
“Edmundo Diaz, he goes by Eddie”
Bobby let out a laugh, your brows furrowed. Either there was good news and he knew him or there was bad news and Eddie had vanished or something horrible. You braced yourself for the answer. “Eddie’s one of ours. He's not in right now, his shift starts at..” Bobby glanced at the clock, “3, if you’d like to wait.”
“Yeah, that’d be great” you smiled. The two of you headed up the stairs, he introduced you to the team. Buck, who was more than happy to show you around, Chim who was also welcoming and super funny and Hen, who you instantly liked and knew you’d get along with. “Can I get you something to drink ? A cup of coffee? Water ?” Bobby rounded the counter, “water is fine, thank you” you took a seat on one of the stools.
“So y/n, how do you know Eddie ?” Buck leant forward, elbows on the counter and his attention on you. “We grew up together” you took a sip of the water. Buck’s head tilted slightly, almost like he didn’t believe you. His brows furrowed “c’mon, there has to be more to the story than just you growing up together”
There was, but were you ready to open that back up ? To tell Eddie’s friends all about why you lost touch to begin with ?
A dry chuckle left your throat, “sure you can handle the whole story ?” you smiled at him, he nodded eagerly. “Oh yeah, I'd love to know. Eddie isn't really one to talk about his past”
Good to know somethings didn’t change.
“Take a seat, you’re in for a story” you patted the chair beside you, Buck sat and once again, his attention back on you. You started from the beginning.
El Paso, 2008.
Hot summer days didn’t even begin to explain the type of weather you were having in Texas right now. The bedroom window was open and Eddie’s back was turned to you. He had been taking a nap when you arrived, the whole point of you coming over was to help him pack up his stuff. Laying beside him, your finger traced over his shoulder, moving down to his back. Tracing shapes and drawing your own little pictures against his skin. “Mhm, Shan- stop” he mumbled as he shifted in bed.
Your heart sunk in your chest.
“Not Shan” you teased, “just me” you sat up, your back resting against the headboard. Eddie’s eyes opened slightly, squinting from the sunlight in the room. “Oh hey” he rolled onto his side, his head now on your lap and his arm tossed over. You smiled at your best friend, if this was the last memory you have with him before he leaves, that's fine.
You’d keep this day in your mind forever, but just the good parts.
“Come on sleepyhead” your fingers running through his hair. He groaned, “5 more minutes”
“You’ve been sleeping all day, mom says you gotta get up” Eddie flips onto his back, head still on your lap as he looks up at the ceiling. The room is quiet for a few moments, the only noise coming from outside through the open window. You break the silence first, “do you really have to go ?” you ask him as he gets up. “You know I do,” he sighs as he looks back at you before he pulls his bag out of the closet.
“I don’t want you to leave” you begin taking some clothes from the closet, folding them and setting them on the bed. “And you think I want to leave ?” Eddie grumbles, you could hear the annoyance in his voice.
The two of you have had this conversation countless times, honestly it was the only truthful conversation the two of you have had in the last few weeks. There was an unspoken level of love between the two of you, far more than just the typical loving your best friend goes. It was more than that but Eddie was with Shannon and he says he loves her, so who were you to go and admit your feelings now. To ruin what he had with her. It would break your heart to break his so you never said anything. Instead, you stayed quiet, telling him that you’d miss him when he left and helped him pack. The rest of the afternoon was quiet, neither of you speaking, quiet exchanges as you shifted around the room and passed things to each other. Eddie sits on edge of the bed, watching as you fold a shirt, his hand wrapping around your wrist. Humming, you go on folding until Eddie tugs on your hand, nodding towards the spot beside him.
Sitting beside him, once again, the room is silent. So silence that you hear the thoughts in Eddie’s head. “Y/n, I-” his sentence is interrupted when Sophia knocks on his door, sticking her head in the room. “Ed, Shannon’s here to see you” she pulls the door in halfway before leaving the two of you in the room. Eddie looks at you, he opens his mouth to say something but you shake your head. “Go,” you breathe, “don’t keep her waiting” giving him a small smile. “Are you sure ?” he asks, his hand on your back. You hum, “I'll be out in a minute, I just have to call my parents” Eddie nods, leaving you in his room. You lay back on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. Letting out a sigh, all the possibilities running through your mind
What if you never get to see him again ? What if he comes home a different person ? What if he doesn’t come home at all ? You couldn't leave things unsaid, you couldn't let him leave without telling him out you really felt.
Walking into the living room, Eddie sat on the recliner, Shannon on his lap. “Oh y/n” she smiled, “I didn’t know you were here” you gave her a small smile back. “Yeah, came over to help him pack” she turned back to Eddie, “why didn’t you call me? I would have came over”
Seeing them together, you couldn't go tell him how you felt now. He was happy with Shannon, they were in love.
El Paso, 2011.
Over the last 3 years, Eddie had returned home a few times. Most of his visits home had been spent with family and Shannon, you’d see him for a few hours or if you happened to stop by his parents’ place for dinner. Within the last 3 years, Eddie had also proposed to Shannon, gotten married and had a baby on the way.
Eddie called you earlier to let you know that Shannon had given birth and he now has a son, Christoper. You of course promised to come by and see him and the baby and you made good on your promise.
“Hi, I'm here for uh Shannon” your fingers tapping against the nurses bay counter
“Last name hun ?” she handed you a visitor badge and a pen, “uh, Diaz, I think ? I’m not sure if she chang-” your sentence interrupted by your best friend calling for you. “Found them” you gave the nurse a smile before heading down the hall towards Eddie.
“Y/n!” his arms stretched out, waiting for you to hug him.
“Eddie! or should I say dad ?” you gave him a hug.
God it felt good to be back in his arms.
“Congratulations on the baby,” you smiled, “you're a baby yourself, I can't believe you have a kid” you teased, giving his face a little squeeze as the two of you walked in. Eddie’s arm was over your shoulder and your arm around his waist as the two of you entered the room, Shannon’s look was enough for Eddie to let go and take a step to the side. She gave you a smile, “nice of you to come by y/n”
“Of course, hope you don’t mind”
“Oh no, of course not! You’re Eddie’s best friend”
The baby began crying, “he’s got a pair of lungs on him huh ?” you chuckled, Eddie smiled as he picked up Christoper. Fatherhood suited Eddie, from the way he picked up Chris to just the way he looked at him, he’d go to the ends of the earth and back for his son. “Do you want to hold him?” Eddie stepped towards you, Chris had settled now. “Um, yeah” taking a seat in the chair, Eddie handed Chris off to you. You smiled at the little boy in your arms, you couldn't believe that your best friend, the guy you grew up with, the guy who was barely not a kid himself, had a kid.
“Hey lil man- oh you're so cute” you cooed as Chris yawned. Looking at Eddie who was now sat on the end of the bed, “The two of you have a beautiful little boy”
El Paso, 2017.
Eddie found himself on your doorstep with Christoper. Knocking on the door, you opened it. “Hey,” your brows furrowed, not that you minded the unexpected visit but you were confused. “Come in buddy” you helped Chris inside and Eddie followed the two of you inside.
“Did you two have dinner? I could order a pizza or I could make something ?”
“Can I have ice cream ?” Chris asked you, taking a seat on the couch. You glanced at Eddie who nodded. “Vanilla or chocolate bud ?”
“Both!” his enthusiasm made you chuckle, “coming up kiddo” you smiled at Chris who was already flipping through the channels. Eddie followed you into the kitchen, the two of you on autopilot, your movements in sync, not a word being spoken. Most of your memories with Eddie have been the quiet ones, not a word between two of you, just moving around together. Eddie got the bowl of the cupboard as you got the ice cream.
“What caused the visit ?” you asked, scooping the ice cream into the bowl. Eddie gave you a look, leaving you in the kitchen for a moment to give the ice cream to Christoper. You could hear the two of them talking, Chris telling his father how his favourite show was on tv and Eddie telling him try not to spill ice cream on himself and that he'd be in the kitchen.
Eddie returned, heading straight to the fridge to get a beer. “I take it dinner didn’t go well ?” you ask, sitting on the counter. Eddie let out a chuckle, “well wasn't even in the house tonight”
“What happened ?” taking the beer from him and taking a sip of it.
“They think it's a bad idea to move across the country with a kid, that Chris needed stability and apparently- they’re the only stability he’s ever had.” Eddie groaned. You understood his frustration, you didn’t have a kid but you get what it's like to have parents who are trying to contradict your life choices.
“And you're sure you want to do this ? Move to LA?”
Eddie’s brows furrowed, he looked at you. “What do you mean? Are you siding with them ?”
“No, of course not. I’m just asking if you're sure if you want to move”
“Of course I am. I need to get out of here, Chris needs a change, somewhere that doesn’t constantly remind him of his mother.” he sighed
“Eds, you know if you move you’ll be on your own. I don’t agree with your parents, you should be able to take Chris wherever you want but you won’t have the help you have here. You have your parents and me and Chris has his friends, are you sure you want to do this ?”
“Are you going to stop me ? Like you tried to stop me when I enlisted ?” he grumbled. If Chris wasn't in the house, you sure as hell would have cussed him for that. “How could you say that ? I didn’t try to stop you, I just didn’t want you to leave, which was the truth by the way.” you roll your eyes.
“Listen, I just came here for you to say bye to Chris because we're leaving tomorrow” Eddie begins walking out of the kitchen, you grab his hand. “What ? That’s it? We're going to leave things like this ? You being mad for no reason ?”
“You’re the one that doesn’t want me to move on” Eddie’s voice raised slightly
“Are you kidding me?! Did I try to stop you ?” your voice raises as well. Eddie pulls his hand from yours, Chris comes over and gives you a hug. “Bye y/n! see you soon!” he smiled at you, you looked down at the little boy, your arms wrapped around him. “See you soon kiddo” you lean down and kiss the top of his head.
You follow Eddie and Chris to the door, watching as Eddie helps Chris into the truck. Watching as he pulled out of the driveway and down the street.
----
“And that was the last time I saw him.” you sigh, Buck’s mouth hung open. “Are you serious ? He didn’t call or write or even text ?” he asked you, you shook your head. “Nope, not a word since then. He changed his number and that was that”
“Y/n?” the voice called, the voice you hadn’t heard in years. Glancing over your shoulder, there he was.
Eddie Diaz, your best friend.
He looked good, healthy. He hasn't changed besides for the shorter hair which he was pulling off rather well, it was a change from the fluffy hair he had the last time you saw him.
“What are you doing here ? How’d you find me?” Eddie asked, he was shocked to see you and you couldn't blame him. You were shocked to see him and you came looking for him.
“Uh- honestly I don’t know” you chuckled, “to which question ?” he looked over at you
“Both” you gave him a smile.
“Yeah, okay. You need to go, I have a shift” Eddie tells you. “Eddie, we don’t have any calls right now. They can stay, I don’t have a problem with it” Bobby tells him, Eddie nods. “I get that Cap, but I have a problem with it” Eddie turns to you. “You need to go” he tells you again, you didn’t want to fight with him, especially in front of his team so you nodded. Turning back towards the team, you give them a smile, “it was nice to meet all of you”
Heading down the stairs, the sound of footsteps behind you makes you stop, looking over your shoulder. Buck was behind you, “y/n wait!”
“Everything okay ?”
“Oh yeah, where are you staying ? I’ll talk to him, maybe he’ll change his mind”
Buck was sweet, his efforts were appreciated. “Do you have a pen or a piece of paper?” Buck pulled a pen out of his pocket, he couldn't find a piece of paper so he stuck his hand out for you to write on instead, you chuckled. Writing down the address and your number, you hand the pen back to Buck.
“That’s the address and my number. The number’s for Eddie or for you if he doesn’t want it” you smile at him, Buck’s cheeks got red. Poor guy was flustered which made you smile, at least your charms still worked on someone. “Seriously though, thank you Buck. It’s nice to know Eddie has people that care about him” Buck gives you a smile, watching as you watch out of the station.
Buck wasn’t the only one who watched you walk out, Eddie did too, from the balcony. The topic of you and your visit was dropped. No one asked any question or said a word. The day went on as a normal shift.

let’s talk about christopher and santa claus for a minute.
because the thing is. that kid is a national treasure and possibly magic. because he has santa’s ear. direct line to christmas miracles.
and the best part is. it’s canon.
but before we get to that. we need to talk about eddie being scared of santa when he was a kid. about the difference in eddie and christopher’s childhoods.
because eddie’s childhood lacked magic. santa wasn’t a right jolly old elf with a red suit and a belly laugh. just a creepy guy with a fake beard who smelled bad. a stranger he was forced to go see. that scared him so much he got sick. twice.
christopher’s childhood tho. filled with magic. when he was little and not feeling well (maybe around one of his surgeries?) and missing eddie. shannon caves. tries to cheer chris up with a giant tree for the backyard. but we didn't have enough ornaments to cover it, so we just loaded it up with lights and ribbon. I got the sleeping bags out, and we laid under it, just staring up at the branches for hours.
which is the most magical thing I’ve ever heard.
so really it’s no surprise that christopher believes in the magic of christmas. the power of santa. miracles and the christmas spirit.
because christopher only asked for one thing that christmas. one very specific gift. not toys. not candy. he just wants his dad. w-when you were gone, I asked santa for you to come back, and you did.
which makes me wonder what time of year it was when eddie’s helicopter was shot down. did he arrive home in time for the holidays? with his wrist in a cast and his arm in a sling and propped up by a cane. wounded but alive. home for the holidays. which is all that would matter to little christopher. that dad’s back. dad’s staying. forever.
and since christopher’s wish came true before. since santa came thru before. why wouldn’t it work again? because christopher’s got his dad. a new life, in a new city, with a new best friend. and everything is perfect. everything except the lack of shannon. christopher misses his mom. so he forgoes toys and candy once again. goes with eddie and buck to see santa. I asked him to find mom. will he?
the answer is yes. because she’s already back. has been for a while. eddie’s just been reluctant to let shannon see christopher. because he’s scared she’ll break his heart if she decided to leave again. because eddie doesn’t believe in magic. and I think that includes happily ever afters.
but christopher believes in magic and wishes. and eddie knows that. and he’ll do everything in his power to keep it that way. cause he loves christopher more than himself. loves that he believes in magic and miracles and santa.
because it allows eddie to believe thru christopher. just for a second. but seconds accumulate. grow. build. into something magical all eddie’s own.
so they get another giant tree. cover it in ribbons and lights. turn the floor into a wrapping paper treasure map for christopher to follow into the front yard. where shannon is waiting. mommy! mommy! I missed you so much. I knew Santa could do it again.
and then so much happens. by the time next christmas rolls around shannon has died and christopher’s survived a tsunami. and eddie has to work thru the holiday. buck too. christmas is ruined.
we don’t see chris talking about santa this year. or to santa. I think that’s probably on purpose. this year is about the absence of christmas spirit. and how that absence radiates out into their lives. chris storming away. giving eddie the silent treatment. buck saying he’s working too.
missing pieces. lack of communication. absent people.
but you cannot convince me that when the holidays go awry. that christopher won’t turn to his old pal santa to fix this particular problem. that he won’t ask for another christmas miracle. that his family can be together for the holidays. christopher and his dad and his buck. it tracks with christopher’s history.
and the thing is. santa comes thru. via buck. who plans a surpise holiday party at the 118. ropes athena and maddie into gathering their friends and family all together. throws the biggest holiday party in the history of the firefam.
and now I’m thinking the s5 holiday episode would be the perfect time for buddie to go canon. buck and eddie have been getting closer since their begins eps. they’ve both grown as people. tried other relationships. neither of which work out. both of which they choose to end.
actually, yes. I am into this. and here’s how it happens:
the sniper and the blackout puts things in perspective. which leads to eddie to breaking up with ana. buck realizes where his priorities are and he breaks up with taylor soon after. that’s when the shoulder bumps and playful banter starts to ramp up. they’ve always been in each other’s space and at each other’s homes. now it’s just more. buck and eddie become buck&eddie.
there’s no big declaration or passionate kiss. 911 doesn’t really do that. what we will get is a buddie hug after a too-close call that lingers a little too long. and eddie doing his sustained eye contact thing. and buck reciprocating with his eye flutter thing. then eddie reaching with his hands. then buck’s blinding smile. then...
END CREDITS. because it’ll hurt so good.
mid-way thru the next ep we’ll get confirmation in the form of carla. she’ll stumble over buck coming out of eddie’s room. there will be a little light teasing. it’s about time interspereced with domestic fluff. they will keep it to themselves for now.
and then eddie’s parents guilt trip him into going to texas for the holidays. buck has a christmas eve shift, but has christmas day off. and plans with maddie, chim, albert, and the hans for jee-yun’s first christmas. plus holiday dinner with athena and bobby’s family. he’s not going to be alone.
doesn’t feel that way tho.
and then there’s a scene at the airport that mirrors the end of s1. only instead of abby leaving it’s eddie and christopher. with buck and eddie both pretending to be okay. neither of them are.
cue eddie in texas. where everything goes wrong. of course it does. helena and ramon keep making jabs about how eddie’s raising christopher. they will never think he’s enough. even worse they don’t treat christopher like an autonomous person. but a consolation prize. a parenthood do-over.
and eddie’s miserable. christopher’s miserable. they both miss buck.
there’s definitely a firefighter santa involved. a lesson about family being who you chose. christopher won’t stop talking about last christmas at the station. about buck.
which is why. when everything comes to a head over christmas eve dinner. eddie makes an executive decision. books a red-eye flight and bundles him and christopher off to the airport.
buck’s out on a call when eddie and christopher arrive. it was only a 2 hr flight but it’s still really late. they both conk out on the sofas. and that’s where buck spots them when the trucks pull into the station. he’s doesn’t go all the way over to them. just watches them from afar. like he’s always done.
until eddie wakes up. sees him watching. reaches his hand out to buck and drags him into their space. physically connects the three of them. kisses his hand. merry christmas buck.
neither buck or eddie notice that chris is also awake. watching them with a mischieveous smile on his face. because christopher believes in magic. the christmas spirit. santa claus. and apparently santa claus believes in christopher because that man has granted each and every one of his wishes.
dad. mom. family. buck.
christopher has been slowly building his own family. via christmas miracles and the help of his good friend santa claus.
outside the window it starts snowing.
and it feels like magic.

Oh god. No. Not here. Not now. Not with these people. Eddie can't breathe, but he can't let them know he can't breathe. He loosens his tie just a little bit - the one Ana went back for after Eddie was discharged from the hospital.  His nervous laughter is really a way to suck some oxygen back into his lungs, and when a heavy hand touches his elbow, and the smile on its owner’s face distorts. He's going to pass out if he doesn't move, doesn't flee from this spiraling, spinning disaster.
"Could you, uh, could you excuse me?" He asks and plasters on his best charming smile, hoping his voice isn't as high and squeaky as he thinks it is.
He catches Ana's eye from across the room as he moves through what feels like a sea of strangers. She's worried, but Eddie doesn't stop to explain anything and continues his way to the bathroom, where he locks himself inside and lets himself fall apart the way his body was begging to.
His fingers curl tight the porcelain of the sink, and he tries, tries to slow his breathing. Finally, he tells himself to stop it in the mirror, even smacks himself across the cheek, but nothing changes.
There's a soft knock on the door, and Ana's gentle voice comes through the cracks, "Eddie? Are you okay?"
"Fine," he grits out.
"Are you having another attack?"
"I said I'm fine!" his anger and frustration echo too loud against the tile of the bathroom. , get a grip, Diaz. "Can you just get Chris some cake? I'll be right out."
Ana's fading footsteps are the only answer he gets, and Eddie focuses back on himself. He tries to remember what the pamphlet from the hospital said, or rather, what Buck said it says the night he found it buried on Eddie's counter and read it to him, but his brain is just a white-hot sear of nothing. Eddie pulls out his phone and dials Buck - no time to look for his name in the phone book. He doesn't answer, and Eddie nearly throws the phone into the sink.
"Damn!"
But it's Sunday, and Buck said something about Taylor coming over on Sunday, so, of course, he isn't answering. Eddie thinks for a second, in desperation, he'll call Bobby, but then his phone vibrates, and he sees Buck's smile fill the screen. He rubs his thumb over it before swiping to answer.
"Buck?" He answers.
"Hey, you called?" Buck asks on the other end of the line, slightly fuzzy, but Eddie can hear the smile in his voice, and the vice around his heart loosens just a little bit.
"Buck?" He asks again as if he can't process anything else.
"Uh, yea. Are you okay?"
"No. Panic attack."
"But aren't you at that christening?"
"Yes."
"Shit."
"Buck, help.” He hates how desperate he must sound, but Buck’s already seen him at his most desperate, trying to hold onto his life and knowing, instinctively, that Buck would help him. He would save him.
Buck always saves him.
" What have you tried?" Buck asks.
"Not much. Nothing. I just, I called you.”
"That’s good. Where are you?"
"Bathroom."
"You need to focus on something besides the panic. So, find me four things you see, Eddie. Try to be specific."
"Okay,” Eddie looks around the bathroom. He sees a million times too many things, and it takes him a second to focus in on something, “Uh, a pink shower curtain,” like your pink sweater that you say is salmon, but Buck, it’s pink. “white rugs,” dazzling white like your teeth when you smile, and that patch of skin that sometimes peeks through under your waistband. “a bristly hairbrush,” god, you’re hair is always so perfect, “and, and curtains on the window. They’re sheer; pink too,” just like that sweater.
"Good,” Buck soothes, “now, three things you can smell."
"Umm, vanilla soap,” sometimes you smell like vanilla, and sugar - like an ice cream cone on a hot summer day, “cinnamon toothpaste,” like in your bathroom, crumpled up in the corner, “my cologne,” you bought me this bottle for Christmas.
"That’s good, Eddie. Two things you can hear."
"I hear people - outside the door."
"Not them,” Buck tells him, “Two other things. Ignore that sound."
"I hear - I hear crickets outside the open window, and I hear...you. Your voice in my ear, your breath,” I always hear you, even when I don’t want to.
"One thing you can touch," Buck says quietly, and Eddie takes a shaking breath, presses his hand over his chest.
"My heartbeat."
"Is it slower than before?"
"Yes."
"Good. Do you think you're okay?"
“Yea. I um, I’m probably just going to go home, sleep it off.”
“Good idea.”
“Thank you, Buck.”
“Of course.”
Eddie hangs up and slips his phone back into his pocket. He isn’t panicking anymore, but he doesn’t feel great. He splashes his face with water and tries to smooth down all the places he’s rumpled before he opens the bathroom door and finds Ana on the other side, Christopher sitting next to her on the floor with a plate of cake in his lap.
“Are you okay?” she asks, putting a hand to his cheek, and it burns where there was just cold air against the drying water.
Eddie nods, “I’m okay. But I think I’m probably gonna go. In case it happens again.”
“Let me get my purse.”
“No, you stay. It’s your family. Just tell them I got sick.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yea,” he leans down and kisses her cheek before helping Chris up.
Neither says much to the other in the car, but Eddie chuckles when Chris rips his suit jacket off the moment the door is closed. He sees the silhouette on the front steps against the fading sun before he gets the truck parked and shakes his head at the realization it’s Buck.
"What are you doing here?" he asks when Buck jogs up to him.
"I didn't want you to be alone when you got home,” Buck answers quietly and then turns his attention to Christopher once the back door is open, and he’s climbing out, “Hey, buddy, did you have a good time? You look pretty handsome in that suit."
Chris rolls his eyes, "that's what everyone kept telling me. But then they said I would have looked better if I cut my hair.
“Well, you know what? I like this long, floppy look,” Buck ruffles his hand through Chris’s hair. It had definitely gotten long, and maybe a little out of control, but he didn’t want to cut it, and Eddie only remembered being dragged to the barbershop every five weeks to have his hair clipped, no matter how much he begged to keep it just a little bit longer.
Chris smiles, “thanks, Buck.”
“Do you think you could give me a minute with your dad?” Buck asks when they all get inside the house. Eddie flips on the lamp by the door, and Christopher nods and leaves for his room, closing the door behind him.
“I’m fine, Buck,” Eddie says, walking further into the house, turning on lights as he goes.
“Okay, but do you wanna talk about what happened?”
“No.”
“Was it too many people?”
Eddie huffs out a laugh, “I’m half Mexican, Buck; I grew up going to huge parties, family and friends always over on the weekend. That wasn’t it.”
“What was it, then?”
“Why does it matter?” he doesn’t mean to sound as exasperated as he does, but sometimes Buck just brings it out of him.
“Because if you can figure out what’s triggering you, you can figure out how to control the panic better.”
“I don’t panic.”
“You didn’t, but now you are. So let’s try and figure out why.”
Eddie sighs, “can I have a beer while we do it, at least?”
“If I get one too.”
They go into the kitchen, and Eddie takes two beers from the fridge and cracks one open before handing it to Buck. He watches him take a long, slow sip. Eddie’s hands start to shake around the glass, and he forces himself to look away, down at the shine of his shoes to keep whatever is trying to rise pushed down.
“Was there like some kind of a loud noise?” Buck asks.
“No. It isn’t - loud noises have never bothered me.”
“Things have changed a little bit, though.”
“I don’t think they have anything to do with being shot. I know no one wants to believe me, but I’m fine about that.”
“Maybe no one wants to believe you because you were shot. That doesn’t happen to most people even once, and it’s happened to you twice.”
“I know, but I swear to you, I’m okay. I don’t think that’ what this about.”
“If you say so. Let’s recount the night then. What happened right before it started?”
“Ana’s great aunt, she - she said I was perfect for Ana -  a good addition to their family.”
Buck takes another swig from the bottle; his eyebrows are knitted in thought. If Chim or Hen were there, they’d make a joke about him not straining himself, and they’d only be kidding, but Eddie knows Buck has a lot of thoughts, a lot of good, deep ones, that maybe Eddie is the only one to have ever heard, “And didn’t you say the first time was after the salesman referred to Ana as Chris’s mom?”
“Yea,” Eddie says quietly.
“Do you think maybe you’re just having a hard time with how serious your relationship is getting?”
“It’s not getting that serious.”
“Eddie, she introduced you to like all her family, you went to an important family event, her great-aunt thinks your excellent husband material.”
Eddie’s breath catches in his throat, and he coughs, trying to force it out, but it sits there like a bubble trying to choke him, and the kitchen starts to spin, turquoise spiraling into stainless steel, spiraling into Buck.
“Stop, stop saying things like that,” he sputters out.
“You’re starting to panic again, aren’t you?” Buck asks.
“When the hell did it get so serious? I was just - I don’t know what I was doing. I liked her, but I didn’t mean-”
Eddie backs against the counter next to the sink, he tries to loosen his tie, but he can’t make his fingers work. Then Buck crosses the space between them and replaces Eddie’s hand with his own, pulling down on the knot and unbuttoning Eddie’s collar. “Breathe; breathe,” he whispers to him and puts his hands on Eddie’s shoulders, and he’s so close Eddie has no choice but to look at him. He feels his hand in Buck’s, slowly pressing against the other man’s chest.
“Breathe with it,” Buck says of his heartbeat, and Eddie closes his eyes. It takes a few moments, but soon his breath is in sync with Buck’s heartbeat, and he’s not sure he’s ever felt this kind of calm before.
“Okay?” Buck asks.
“No, but yes.”
“I’m gonna ask you something, and I need you to be honest - not for me, but for yourself.”
“O-okay.”
“Do you want Ana to be in your future? Your far future?”
“No,” he answers quickly, but it’s a question he’s asked himself before and was just too afraid to say out loud,  “but -”
“But what? Chris likes her?”
“Yes!” Eddie shouts.
“Maybe he does, maybe he even loves her a little, but he loves you more, and he wants you to be happy, and he knows you aren’t happy, and he probably knows it’s because of her.”
“He does?”
“Yes,” Buck takes Eddie’s hand away from his heart, but he doesn’t let go of it,  “your heart knows it too, and it’s screaming at you, Eddie, but you aren’t listening.”
“I wanted to be ready, to move on from Shannon, not just after she died, but long before that too.”
“I know.”
“Am I never going to be ready?” He can feel the wet of his eyes as he blinks up at Buck, vulnerable once again in front of him.
“I think you are, but not with Ana, and that’s okay. I mean, she’s the first person you seriously dated besides your wife, Eds. So it’s okay that she isn’t the right fit, and it’s okay if it takes you a little while longer to find who is.”
“Is Taylor your right fit?” Eddie blurts out, and it makes Buck let go of his hand.
“Whoah, we’re talking about you here.”
“Is she? It’s been four months, and you’re still together; she’s still actually here.”
“Yea, she hasn’t run away from me yet, and ya know, we have a good time.”
“She makes you happy?”
“Y-yea. I mean, am I ready to ask her to marry me? No, but I gave her a drawer last week.”
“A drawer?”
“Yea. She’s only got a few things in it; honestly, she lives more in the news van than anything.”
“You gave Taylor a drawer. In your loft?”
“Am I mumbling or something? A drawer, yes. In my loft.”
“That’s uh - that’s cool.” But, damnit, Eddie can’t do this for the third time. He doesn’t have the strength left. He grips the dishtowel hanging from the knife drawer just to ground himself to something.
“You okay?”
“Yep, yep.”
“You’re looking a little panicky. Maybe it’s not just Ana. Maybe you’ve just got a real fear of commitment thing going on. Even if it’s mine.”
“Shit,” his chest hurts this time, and his whole body is hot, but he’s shivering.
“Put your hand back on my heart.”
“No, no! God, that’s going to make this worse.”
“What? Why? It worked last time.”
“Exactly. And in the bathroom, it was you, so much you,” Eddie’s knees are weak now. He isn’t sure how much longer he can stay upright, and suddenly everything, fucking everything, smells like Buck.
“Eddie, you’re not making any sense.”
“I need you to go. Can you go, please?”
“I’m not going to leave you like this.”
And, of course, Eddie knows Buck won’t leave him. Buck will do just about anything Eddie asks, but he won’t do this. He won’t leave Eddie when Eddie needs him so badly.
“Buck, please, you’re making things worse.”
“How am I making things worse?”
“Because you’re the only one who can make them better!”
“Eddie, Eddie.” Buck wraps Eddie up in his arms before he can fall to the floor, probably hitting his head on the way down. The instant calm he feels with Buck’s body pressed hard against his, his soft breath hitting the curve of Eddie’s neck terrifies him. It isn’t a new fear, but it’s one he’s been feeling so much more lately, one he can’t seem to ignore. He’s so tired from his body trying to run away from everything; his bones ache, his chest is sore. Finally, he closes his eyes and gives in to the fear, stops trying to fight or flee, and just lets Buck hold onto him. His fingers rake through Eddie’s sweat-slicked hair as Eddie’s breathing starts to slow.
“Shh, it’s okay,” Buck whispers into Eddie’s throbbing temple.
“It’s not okay at all.”
“Why not?”
“Because I’m in love with you,” he rushes out in one broken breath, “it isn’t just that Ana feels wrong; it’s that you feel right. You’ve always felt right.”
Buck is quiet for what feels like a hundred moments before he finally seems to have something to say.
“Huh,” he breathes out from the back of his throat.
“That’s all you have to say?”
“What would you like me to say?”
“I don’t know. You could say that I’m insane, that you love Taylor, that you’re not into men, not into me.”
“I could say any of that, but then I’d be lying to you.”
“What?”
“Look, Eddie, I-I don’t know if I’m in love with you, but I feel something. Something more than I’ve ever felt with anyone, and I kinda keep thinking it’s going to go away, but it never goes away.”
“Huh.”
Buck laughs and gently sits Eddie up, tangled across Buck’s long legs, still safe in his arms, “are you okay?” he asks.
“I think I am.”
“Good.”
Buck presses a kiss to the tip of Eddie’s nose, and Eddie smiles before he tilts his chin, so Buck’s lips fall against his. It’s a slow, quiet kiss that lasts only a few seconds before they both pull away.
Eddie is so tired he can barely keep his eyes open, so he lets them slip closed, lets Buck hold him closer in the middle of the kitchen floor until he falls asleep.

66???
66. "i want you to meet my family"
it seems like a great idea all the way until the night before, when eddie suddenly isn't so sure. he tries to swallow down his doubts, because he doesn't want buck to think it's about him, but—it's buck. of course he figures out that eddie is on the verge of spiraling.
"you're about to freak out, aren't you?" he says, settling next to eddie on the couch.
"i'm... not not about to freak out," eddie allows.
"do you want to call it off?" buck asks, no judgement in his voice. "adriana's gonna be here for, what, two days? i can easily stay with maddie and chim for that time."
and eddie knows he means it, and he loves buck for it. eddie knows that if he asked, buck would go to maddie's and lay low the entire time adriana is visiting, so that eddie could keep letting his sister think he's straight by way of lie of omission.
but despite the not not freaking out, it isn't actually what he wants.
"buck, no," eddie says, reaching for buck's hand. "you live here, i'm not gonna kick you out just because i'm a little nervous."
"it's not kicking out if i volunteer to go," buck offers, squeezing eddie's hand.
"it's not even about that," eddie says. "i don't want you to go. i want you to be here. i want you to meet my family."
"technically, i've already met them," buck points out. "after the special deployment."
"you know that's not what i mean."
"i know," buck says softly. "if it's really what you want, eddie, of course. just—i'm not gonna hold it against you, you know? if you change your mind."
"i'm not gonna change my mind," eddie says firmly. "i might—i might freak out about it a little, but i'm not gonna change my mind. you're the best thing that's ever happened to me—except for christopher, obviously—"
"—obviously," buck agrees.
"—and i want my family to know that."
"okay then," buck says, and leans over to kiss him.
eddie picks up adriana on the way back from taking christopher to school, and she doesn't even blink when eddie opens the door and shows her into the kitchen where buck is still finishing up breakfast.
"hey, buck," adriana says, accepting the mug of coffee buck hands her and sitting at the table. then she looks back at eddie. "figured it out, did you?"
"i—what?"
"please," adriana says. "i saw the way you two were looking at each other that time at mom and dad's. it was just a matter of time. big sisters know these things, you know."
"... oh."
"as for you," adriana says, turning back to face buck. "has anyone given you the shovel talk yet?"
buck grins. "carla, pepa, abuela, christopher, half of the 118..."
"okay, good," she says. "then i don't need actually pretend to be threatening this early in the morning, but consider my name added to that list."
"will do," buck says, bright and cheerful, and eddie blinks.
"what—buck, why are you so happy about multiple people threatening your life?"
"people only give shovel talks when there's a potential for real hurt," buck says. "so it's like... a tacit acknowledgement that this is serious."
"yeah, pretty much," adriana agrees, and snags the remaining half of buck's pancake.
"i could have just told you it's serious," eddie says. "without needing to threaten anybody."
"where's the fun in that?" buck asks, and adriana points her fork at him in agreement.
eddie just shakes his head and ducks down to drop a kiss on buck's forehead on his way to pour himself a cup of coffee.
the idea of telling his parents still stresses him out, but at least now he knows for sure he's got adriana in his corner.
send me a prompt from this list of ways to say i love you!

would you love me for the hell of it?
buddie (2.4k) (read it on AO3)
As stupid as it seems now, Eddie always thought they’d have more time.
He should know better. If the bullet wounds that riddle his body weren’t evidence enough, the scarring that he knows twists across Buck’s leg should have been. It wasn’t, though. Despite everything they’d been through, Eddie always thought they’d have enough time.
Now, though, as he opens the door to find Buck already standing in front of it, he knows they’ve finally run out. Eddie draws him into a hug without a second thought. There’s no space left for pretenses.
“I didn’t even knock,” Buck says into his shoulder. Eddie can hear the unsteadiness in his voice and it breaks his heart all over again. None of it was supposed to happen like this.
“I was coming to find you,” Eddie says thickly. “You weren’t answering your phone.”
“I couldn’t stop checking the time, so I turned it off,” Buck admits. “I’m sorry.”
Eddie let’s go of Buck, but only long enough to grab his hand and pull him inside. “It’s okay,” Eddie says softly. “I get it.” And he does, god he does. He’d unplugged the microwave hours ago, just so he didn’t have to see its mocking green numbers staring back at him.
“Buck!” Christopher exclaims from the living room floor.
“Hey, buddy!” Buck says, crouching next to him. It amazes Eddie that, even now, Buck manages to exude the bright, beautiful energy he always has in front of Christopher. He kind of loves him for it.
It’s not the first time Eddie’s had the thought, but it might be the first time that he has no urge to run from it or to push it down until he can put Buck neatly back into the best friend slot he’d occupied in Eddie’s mind for so long. What’s the point in all that now? Whatever he’d been afraid of losing, there’s a countdown on all of it now.
Christopher’s explaining his drawing in detail to Buck, and it makes Eddie’s heart ache. Sure, Chris has been growing like a weed lately, but Eddie’d figured he had a year or two left of this at least.
Maybe time has always been the enemy, and he’s just the last one to work it out.
Thank god for Buck. As much as it hurts, knowing with certainty now just how good Buck is at pretending to be okay, Eddie can’t help but be grateful for Chris’s sake. He sits down on the couch next to them and puts his hand on Buck’s shoulder, just because he can. Buck looks up at him questioningly, and Eddie offers him a small smile. Buck nods and smiles back, but Eddie can read the sadness there.
“Can we watch a movie?” Chris asks eventually.
“Yeah, mijo, pick one out,” Eddie says, opening the Netflix app on the TV and handing Christopher the remote. “Me and Buck will make snacks.”
He stands, knowing Buck will follow.
In the kitchen, Eddie allows his facade to crack, just a little. He rests his head tiredly against Buck’s shoulder, smiling a little when Buck’s arms automatically encircle him.
“I thought you’d be with Maddie,” he says softly.
Eddie feels Buck shake his head and swallow. “I saw her, Chim, and Jee this morning. But I needed -- god, Eddie, you have to know.”
Eddie pulls back and looks Buck in the eye. He sees love reflected there, just like he always has. “I do,” he says softly. “Me too.”
Buck lets out a wounded noise and pulls Eddie back into the embrace.
“I’m glad you’re here,” Eddie whispers, eyes burning with unshed tears.
“No place I’d rather be for the end of the world,” Buck jokes weakly. His hands tremble against Eddie’s back.
None of it was supposed to happen like this. The comet was supposed to pass close enough to Earth to be a spectacular show for anyone in the Eastern hemisphere, then continue its way around the sun and back out into the Kuiper belt. Hell, Chris has been excited about it, Buck too. They’d been talking about it for months, Buck helping Christopher learn everything he could about where comets came from and what they were made of.
And then something happened. Eddie doesn’t really understand it, but he keeps hearing words like dark matter and quantum mechanical black hole and gravity wells. The gist of it, though, Eddie gets. Something changed the path of the comet, and instead of passing them by harmlessly, it’s now on a collision course. The entire world got less than two week’s warning.
The comet is something like eleven miles wide, he’d heard on the radio. Large enough for an extinction-level event, Buck had told him quietly.
He knows that there are people around the world frantically working to prevent that. He also knows that the odds are bleak. It all came down to time, all over again. There wasn’t enough. There never is.
“Am I doing the right thing?” Eddie asks Buck softly. “Not telling Christopher?”
The fierceness with which Buck answers surprises him, though perhaps it shouldn’t. “He doesn’t need to know. You’re doing the right thing, Eds, he shouldn’t have to face this. Either the world doesn’t end, and we scared him for no reason, or…” Buck trails off, but Eddie gets his meaning.
Eddie swallows and nods. “You’re right,” he says. “He doesn’t-“ he cuts himself off and shuts his eyes tight.
Buck squeezes him again. I’m here, the gesture says. Eddie squeezes back.
The movie Christopher picks is one they’ve seen before, and Eddie’s grateful. It’s easier to tune it out, to keep his eyes on Christopher and Buck instead.
When they’d returned with snacks, Christopher had immediately asked if he could sit with Buck. Buck had turned to him, expression stricken. The sentiment was obvious.
“Only if Buck sits with me,” Eddie’d replied. They’d ended up pressed together from their shoulders to their ankles with Chris sprawled out across both of them.
It’s the kind of domesticity Eddie’s caught himself daydreaming about more than once.
When the movie ends, Chris asks to stay up and wait for the comet. Of course he’d remembered it’s tonight. Eddie doesn’t know why he expected otherwise.
“No, buddy, we’ll watch the video tomorrow,” Eddie says. The lie tastes like ash on his tongue.
Chris begins to pout, but Buck steps in.
“Trust me,” he says. “If we wait until tomorrow, we’ll get to watch the best video, instead of some shakey news camera. You wouldn’t want to spoil that, would you?” Buck asks, pasting on his most infectious grin. Knowing it’s fake makes Eddie’s chest ache.
“Tell you what, though,” Eddie says, “how about we all have a sleepover in my room tonight?”
Christopher cheers at that.
Eddie smiles. It’s small and it’s watery, but it’s real. Buck presses his shoulder further into Eddie’s, a comforting pressure.
“Go get ready for bed and pick out a book, okay?”
Christopher grins and slides off the couch. The tears that have been threatening at the corners of Eddie’s eyes all night long return with a vengeance, and as soon as Christopher disappears around the corner, they finally fall.
His shoulders shake silently, and Buck pulls him to his chest. Buck’s warm fingers card through his hair, and he could swear he feels the ghost of a kiss pressed against the top of his head. Under any other circumstance, the thought would be electrifying. Now, though, it just makes the ache inside him grow.
In another lifetime, they could have had this. Decades, maybe, of unrestrained affection. Love. God, what had they been waiting for?
He feels the unsteadiness of Buck’s breath and knows without looking that he’s crying too. Mourning the same thing, Eddie suspects.
He hears Christopher making his way back towards them, and reluctantly pulls out of Buck’s embrace. He does his best to wipe the tears away and school his expression, but if the way Christopher frowns at him is any indication, he isn’t successful.
“What’s wrong?” Chris asks, looking between them.
Eddie pulls him close and presses a kiss to his forehead. “Everything’s okay,” he says softly.
“Your Dad and I were just talking about something sad,” Buck says, “but you don’t need to worry about it, okay?”
“What was it?” Chris asks.
Buck looks panicked and desperately sad, all at once.
“There were some people we couldn’t save,” Eddie says. This, at least, feels something like the truth. “And that made us feel sad, buddy.”
“It’ll be okay,” Christopher says seriously, looking at both of them in turn.
“You’re right,” Buck says, sounding a little choked up. “As long as we’re all together, it will be.”
They settle in Eddie’s bed and read a chapter from Chris’s book, the fifth in the Percy Jackson series. They’re barely halfway through it, but part of Eddie wants to push through the rest. He wants to know how it ends. Wants Christopher to know. Christopher should get to —
Eddie screws his eyes shut. Christopher should get to graduate, to fall in love, and to have kids of his own. He should get to grow old and gray and he should get to finish his damn book.
It’s not fair. None of this is fair.
All of the things Chris has been through - losing his mom, the tsunami, nearly losing Eddie - what’s the point of it all if he doesn’t get to grow from it, to heal past it?
Eddie wants to scream and cry and punch something. Instead, he keeps reading, steadily as he can, until Christopher is fast asleep between him and Buck.
After a few minutes of silence, both of them watching the steady rise and fall of Christopher’s chest, Buck taps Eddie’s wrist and nods towards the hall. He slips out of bed, and Eddie follows, careful not to jar Chris.
He finds Buck leaning against the wall, head tipped back, eyes closed. Eddie stands next to him, mindless of personal space. It had always been an afterthought between them, anyway.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck says casually, after several moments of silence. He opens his eyes and tips his head forward, gaze landing on Eddie. “I can’t even remember why I was so afraid to say it.”
“Me too,” Eddie says. He laces his fingers with Buck’s. “I’m in love with you too. I have been, I don’t even know how long.”
Buck chuckles softly, sadly. “We have the worst timing,” he says, turning his entire body towards Eddie.
Eddie turns to meet him, and Buck’s hand comes up to graze Eddie’s jaw.
“Can I kiss you?” Eddie asks, surprising himself. It shouldn’t feel like such a leap, but it does. It’d be terrifying, but Eddie’s always trusted Buck to catch him when he falls.
Instead of answering, Buck leans in and brushes his lips against Eddie’s, soft and gentle and everything and altogether not enough. Eddie chases him as he pulls back, capturing him in a deeper kiss. It’s hard and desperate, yet somehow achingly tender as if their bodies know that their first kisses will almost certainly be their last.
Buck lets out a half-choked sob and buries his fingers in Eddie’s hair. He doesn’t let go, even as they break the kiss, just leans their foreheads together. Somewhere along the line, Eddie’s fingers have fisted in Buck’s shirt. He doesn’t let go either.
“Eddie,” Buck says, raw and grief-stricken.
“Evan,” Eddie whispers. It’s only the second time he’s used Buck’s given name. If the way Buck’s breath hitches is any indication, he notices too.
Buck kisses him again then, filthy at first, then slowing into something sweet. In another lifetime, Eddie could spend hours like this, trading kisses with Buck. In this lifetime though…
Eddie cups Buck’s jaw and pulls back. “I love you,” he says because if this is his only chance, he’s not going to let Buck doubt it for a minute.
“I love you, too.”
Eddie takes Buck by the wrist and pulls him back into the bedroom, turning off lights as they go. They break apart just long enough to settle on either side of Chris, facing one another. Buck throws an arm across both of them, and Eddie brushes an errant lock of hair from Buck’s forehead.
The minutes tick by slowly as they lay in the dark, until Eddie finally speaks.
“If there’s something after all this…” Eddie whispers, “Promise you’ll find me?”
Buck lifts his arm and holds out his pinky finger. Eddie wraps his own around it.
“I promise,” Buck says.
It means something. It has too.
Eddie doubts he’ll sleep, but somehow, in between listening to Christopher’s breathing and watching Buck watch him, he slips into a dark, dreamless slumber.
The sunlight that wakes Buck is warm on his face, just like the sheets that pool around his waist. He wants to luxuriate in it, to let the sweetness of sleep pull him back under, but this time of year, if the sun’s already out, he’s late for work.
Buck’s eyes fly open. The sun’s out. He’s in Eddie’s bed. He’s late for work. Holy shit. He doesn’t even try to contain the grin that spreads across his face. He rolls over and shakes Eddie’s shoulder.
“Eddie, Eddie, wake up,” he whispers excitedly.
Eddie lifts his head, looking rumpled and adorable. He grumbles something completely unintelligible, and the smile on Buck’s face gets even wider.
“We’re late for work,” Buck says, practically bouncing.
“Shit,” Eddie says, scrubbing a hand across his face.
“Eds, you don’t understand. We’re late for work.”
The sleep clears from Eddie’s face almost as quickly as it had from Buck’s. “Oh my god,” he says, taking in the decidedly intact world around them. “It missed. Buck, it missed!”
Eddie surges forward, mindful of the still-sleeping Christopher between them, and kisses him square on the lips. They’re both smiling too hard for it to go anywhere, but it’s still the best kiss of Buck’s life.
Eventually, they’ll get up. They’ll distract Christopher with pancakes and turn on the news to learn that the global joint effort to divert the comet (“They nuked a comet, Eddie! That’s insane!”) was a success. They’ll find Christopher the video they promised, in a press release from NASA. They’ll let him see the comet’s bright blazing path across the sky, but they won’t tell him just how close it came. They’ll text Bobby to let him know they’re running late. They’ll receive a reply to let them know that, just this once, it’s okay. They’ll do all of these things in time, but for now, they bask in the simple joy of being alive and together.
Another lifetime, Eddie had thought the night before. No, he’s going to make this one count.

The Castle Operation
Alright I posted it on AO3 like one hour ago and I’m already overwhelmed by the comments you guys are crazy but I’m so grateful. I was feeling very insecure about my writing and all the comments made me smile like an idiot.
Find it on AO3.
Christopher sighs as he chews on his pencil.
This Math exercise is hard and he’s been working on it for more than half an hour. It’s a long time, and if he gets stuck any longer then he won’t have time to play video games.
Buck is usually the one to help him with his homework. Especially Math. His father is very bad at Math and Buck is not very good at it either but they usually manage to get through it together, as a team.
You and I make a great team – that’s what Buck told him a few weeks ago and Christopher doesn’t understand why he’s not around anymore. He used to be there all the time after his dad got hurt. He used to make breakfast and drive him to school and help him with his homework and read him stories just before nighttime. But that was before.
He’s alone again with his dad now. And Christopher loves his dad. In fact, if you’d ask him he’d say he’s the best dad in the world, for sure. But he thought that maybe this time Buck would have stayed. He thought that maybe his dad would want him to stay.
But his dad never asked.
Christopher presses his small hands over his face and rubs his eyes. He’s tired and he wants to sit on the couch and play video games and talk with his friends but he’s stuck on this chair because of this stupid Math exercise. He doesn’t even like Math.
“What’s going on in there?” Carla asks after a few seconds. She sits down next to him and Christopher drops his pencil on the table.
“I don’t like Math.” Christopher only answers, shrugging his shoulders. He raises his eyes and sighs when he realizes it’s only 5pm. He still has to wait two hours for his dad to come back and maybe then he can ask him if Buck can come too, for a movie night.
“Why do I feel like there’s something more than that?” Carla asks, raising her eyebrows. Christopher doesn’t like it when she does that. She always knows when something is bothering him and he can never lie to her. He tried before but it never worked.
“I miss Bucky.” Christopher says, slowly.
“Oh honey I miss him too.” Carla answers. “But you know he’s not far, right?”
“I know.” Christopher whispers. “But he used to be around all the time. He used to be around all the time and now he’s gone.” Christopher adds, taking the pen to scribble on his notebook. “I don’t understand why Dad didn’t ask him to stay.”
“Did you want him to stay?” Carla asks, smiling.
“Of course I did.” Christopher frowns. “I want him to stay forever.” He clarifies. Because he thinks it’s important, for people to know that Buck belongs here with them. Not in his own flat. Not with anyone else. Here . With him and his dad. “And I know dad wants that, too. He didn’t ask him to stay but I know he wanted to. I’m not stupid. He’s always happy when he’s around. He smiles all the time and sometimes he looks at him the same way he used to look at Mom.”
“Oh, Christopher.” Carla says, wrapping her arms around his back. Christopher sniffles and hides his face on her chest, closing his eyes. “You’re too smart for your own good.”
“So you see it too, then?” Christopher moves away from Carla’s embrace and adjusts his glasses on his nose.
“I do.” Carla agrees. “Very much so.” She adds. “But maybe your dad hasn’t seen it yet.”
“But that’s not possible.” Christopher shakes his head. Surely, his dad has seen it, too. His dad notices everything. He always does.
“Maybe it’s easier for us to tell because we can see it from a distance.” Carla explains and Christopher frowns.
“What do you mean?”
“You remember the Lego castle you built with Buck?” Christopher nods and smiles. It was a very big castle and Buck and him had taken an entire afternoon to build it. It was very complicated and messy and his dad had even said they could take some snacks upstairs in his room so that they could be done before diner. But it was a long time ago and Christopher doesn’t understand what it has to do with anything.
“I do.” He says, looking down at his hands.
“And when you stand very close to it, you can’t really see everything all at once, can you?” She asks and Christopher nods again. It’s true – he thinks. He usually has to move his eyes a lot if he wants to see the whole thing. “Maybe you can see one of the windows very well, or even a tower or the drawbridge.” She continues. “But the only way to see it all, the only way to see the whole castle is if you stand a bit further.”
“But I don’t want Buck to go anywhere.” Christopher argues.
“And he’s not.” Carla reassures him, ruffling his hair. “He’s not going anywhere. He’s always gonna be there, Christopher. But maybe that’s why you can see it so clearly and your dad doesn’t.”
“Because I can see the whole castle.” Christopher smiles. “That’s okay, then.” He says.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” He nods. “Dad can only see the drawbridge.” He says. “But I’m gonna help him see the whole castle, too.”
                                                      ---
Christopher spends a lot of time thinking about it. Whether it be in his bed, on the couch, in the play-yard or even in his classroom. He knows he’s supposed to listen to what his teacher is saying but he just can’t help it.
It’s only for a few minutes though, and Buck told him the other day that sometimes it’s important to take small breaks in order to be more focused on the problem at hand afterwards. And that’s what he does, taking small breaks, thinking about something else than what the teacher is saying.
So really, he’d say it’s even a win-win situation. He gets to reflect on the Helping Dad to See the Whole Castle situation and he’s then more concentrated on his exercises.
It’s only two weeks after his conversation that he comes up with a plan. A very good plan – he thinks. He’s not exactly sure it’s going to work out but he owes it to his dad to at least try, right? His dad’s happiness is at stake so the least he can do is give him a little push in the right direction.
The plan comes to him one day when he’s seated at the table inside the fire station, drawing a picture for Buck. Hen and Chim are comfortably seated on the couch next to him and Uncle Bobby and Buck are in the kitchen, cooking mac and cheese for the whole team. Christopher can hear them talking but he’s much more focused on his dad.
Because his dad is leaning against the fridge and he’s looking at Buck again, with the same expression he used to look at his mom with. He’s smiling and his eyes are so bright Christopher honestly thinks the whole thing is ridiculous. Surely his dad must know he’s in love with Bucky.
And that’s when he hears them. Hen and Chim. They probably both think Christopher is too engrossed on his drawing to notice they’re talking but he can hear them loud and clear.
“When do you think he’ll finally realize?” Chim asks, his voice low, almost whispering.
“I have no idea.” Hen answers. “But it better be soon because you and I both know Buck’s never gonna make the first move.”
Christopher frowns. First move? But to do what? He thinks. From the way they’re talking in hushed voices, he knows it must be important and so he keeps on drawing and listens carefully to the rest of the conversation. They seem very serious. Which Christopher decides is weird. They’re usually always laughing and sharing jokes but this time he can feel it’s more important.
“You know for a while I really thought it was one-sided.” Chimney says.
“Well you know Eddie. He’s never been very vocal about these kind of things.”
“I mean does he need to?” Chim asks. “I mean, look at him!” He adds, louder this time.
Christopher turns his head until his eyes fall on his dad again. He’s still in the kitchen but this time he’s whispering something in Buck’s ear, his hand holding Buck’s arm. They’re both laughing, and that makes Christopher smile. No one makes his dad happier than Buck does. Except him, of course.
Then his dad taps Buck on the back of his neck with his hand and Buck only sticks his tongue out.
“Oh come on!” Hen exclaims and Christopher almost jumps in his seat. “I swear to god if they don’t come to their senses soon, I’m locking them in the closet downstairs.” She adds. “They’re literally acting like a married couple, Chim!”
And Christopher’s smile only gets a bit bigger at her words.
They see it too – he realizes.
They see the whole castle.
And maybe that’s what he needs to do. Maybe that’s what his dad needs.
And so he takes another piece of paper his dad brought with them and starts writing:
Castle operation:
Start telling people about it. But who?
My teacher.
The nice lady of the supermarket.
Uncle Bobby and Aunt Athena?
Abuela.
Find out if Bucky knows about the Castle.
Wait for dad to see it too.
                                                         ---
The first people Christopher tells are Uncle Bobby and Aunt Athena. He’s standing up on a stool and he’s helping Bobby making soup from scratch. Chicken soup. His dad’s favorite because they’re celebrating him coming back to active duty tonight and Christopher wants everything to be perfect.
He stirs the soup with the big spatula Bobby gave him a few minutes ago and smiles at the scent. It smells just like when his Abuela does it. That’s why Christopher knows it’s gonna be good.
“Where’s Bucky?” Christopher eventually asks after a few seconds. He usually always helps in the kitchen and he can’t see him anywhere.
“He’s talking to your dad in the garden.” Bobby answers, pointing at the glass window. “Look, right there.” He adds, making Christopher look up.
And here he is. Buck. He’s standing next to his dad but Christopher can instantly see that something is wrong. He seems sad. His dad seems sad, too. He’s running his hands through his hair and Christopher knows his dad always does that when he’s nervous about something. It doesn’t happen often but he always notices it.
Christopher tries to keep his eyes on the soup but his curiosity eventually gets the best of him. He darts his eyes towards his dad again and that’s when he sees it. His dad takes a few steps backwards but Buck catches his wrist before he has the chance to walk away.
Christopher squints and even from the kitchen, he knows what Buck is saying must be very important because he looks at his dad in the eye and the next second he wraps his arms around his shoulders and gives him a hug. He even kisses him on the hair and Christopher thinks that’s obviously something he needs to write down on his Castle Operation journal tonight.
“My dad and Bucky are in love.” He only says and doesn’t miss the smile Uncle Bobby shares with Aunt Athena who just joined them in the kitchen.
“You think so?” Uncle Bobby asks, tasting the soup with a spoon.
“I don’t think, I know.” Christopher clarifies. “They just don’t see it yet.” He adds. “But that’s okay. I’ll make sure they do.”
“You do that, kid.” Athena says with a laugh, ruffling his hair.
                                                     ---
Christopher is lost in the supermarket. It’s a big one and he can’t find Buck. They were doing groceries shopping in order to surprise his dad and cook him his favorite dessert and the next thing Christopher knew he was alone, looking for Buck.
It’s okay, though. Christopher is not scared. It’s not the first time he gets lost in here and it already happened a few times with his dad. He would usually roam around the shelves and look at his right, and then his left, until his eyes fall on Buck but this time, he decides to choose a more direct approach.
He thinks that’s a perfect opportunity to tell the nice lady about Buck. Him and his dad always go to her checkout because she’s always giving him a lollipop. He walks away from the refrigerated shelves and heads for the entrance of the store.
She’s here, at the checkout 6 as always and there’s no-one paying or placing their items on the conveyor belt.
“Christopher!” She exclaims with a smile. “You’re here with your dad again? Where is he?”
“I’m here with Bucky!” Christopher says excitedly. “He’s my second dad. We wanted to buy chocolate chips because we’re going to do a brownie for my dad. It’s his favorite dessert. But I lost Buck. I don’t know where he is.”
“Do you want me to call him with the loudspeaker?” She asks and Christopher nods vigorously. He thinks that’s en excellent idea. Like that, so many people will know that Buck is his dad. It doesn’t matter whether they know him or not. Christopher doesn’t care. In fact, he would happily scream it on the rooftops if it meant his dad would finally realize he’s in love with Buck.
“Christopher Diaz is waiting for his dad next to Checkout six.” She announces and Christopher smiles big at her words. “Alright Christopher, which one do you want today?” She asks, pointing at the bowl filled with lollipops.
“Cherry!”
“Cherry it is, then.” She says, handing it to him. He’s about to thank her when-
“Christopher!” Buck exclaims, rushing towards him, his eyes big, his face wrinkled in concern. “I looked everywhere for you, buddy.” He adds.
“That’s okay Bucky, I was right there.” Christopher says.
“Another lollipop?” He sighs, smiling at the nice lady. “God, you’ve already eaten at least six of these cookies this afternoon, your dad’s gonna kill me.”
“Well he doesn’t need to know… Does he?” Christopher asks cheekily and Buck laughs.
“You know what? You’re absolutely right. Let’s keep it a secret, yeah?” He asks. “Now come on, let’s find these chocolate chips, alright? We don’t wanna be late to surprise your dad.”
                                                          ---
“Goodnight, superman.” Buck whispers a few hours later, kissing him on his forehead.
It’s late and Christopher is tired but he knows his dad is in the shower and he’s pretty sure now is the best time to figure out if Buck is also seeing the Castle for what it really is. And so he just says it.
“Buck.” He calls him, waiting for him to sit back on his bed to continue. “Do you love my dad?” He asks and watches Buck as he opens his eyes wide, his mouth agape. He seems surprised. But Christopher doesn’t look away.
“Hum I- Of course I love him buddy, he’s my best-friend.” He says. “After you, of course.”
“That’s not what I mean.” Christopher insists, sitting up straight on his bed. He rubs his eyes with his hands and holds back a yawn. “I’m asking you if you’re in love with him.” He clarifies.
Buck doesn’t answer anything. He stays very quiet and for a few seconds Christopher thinks that maybe he didn’t hear him. He’s about to repeat the question but then Buck lets out a small laugh and looks down at his hands, like he’s scared.
“Would-would that be a problem?” Buck asks, meeting his gaze. “If I said that I was?” He asks. “In love with your dad, that is.” He adds. “Would that be okay?”
“Of course.” Christopher only answers, frowning. He doesn’t understand why Buck needs to ask him that question.
“Then I- yeah.” Buck admits. “I am. I’m in love with your dad.” He smiles. That makes Christopher smiles too and he nods as he wraps up warmly in his blanket.
“So you see the castle, too.” Christopher states, his eyes watching the lego set standing in the corner of his room.
“The castle?” Buck tilts his head with a confused smile on his face.
“You and dad.” Christopher explains, his voice tired. “You guys are the Castle.” He says. “Carla said I could see it because I was standing further away.” He adds. “She said my dad was too close and that’s why he couldn’t see it. But I don’t think she was right.”
“No?” Buck encourages him, running his hand through Christopher’s curls.
“No. I think he’s exactly in the right place.” He goes on. “He’s just too scared to see it.” His eyes are closed now. But he pushes through the fatigue and says the next few words anyway. He needs to stay awake. At least only for a few more minutes. Because this conversation is too important.
“And why do you think he’s scared to see it?” Buck asks, curious.
“Because he’s afraid it might break if he gets too close.” He says. “So he doesn’t look at it. He doesn’t touch it either. Maybe he pretends it isn’t there, too. Like that, he’s sure it can’t break.”
Christopher falls asleep. But he stills hears Buck’s answer.
“Or maybe he just thinks there’s no Castle to look at in the first place.”
There are two last thoughts crossing Christopher’s mind before he lets himself fall completely into Morpheus’ arms.
Buck definitely knows about the Castle. He’s just afraid his dad thinks it doesn’t exist.
Adults are too messy and complicated. Being a kid is easier.
                                                      ---
Christopher is at his Abuela's with his dad. He’s sitting on the carpet in the living-room, his Lego bricks scattered around him. He’s trying to build the fire station but it turns out to be much more complicated than he expected it to be.
His Abuela and his dad are in the kitchen and Christopher isn’t planning on eavesdropping because he knows it’s a bad thing but his name suddenly comes up in the conversation and if what they’re saying concerns him then it must mean he has the right to listen, right? It only makes sense.
“So, is Christopher excited about his summer camp?” His Abuela says.
“Yeah I think so.” His dad answers and Christopher nods vigorously even though they can’t see him. His dad is right. He is very excited. All his friends are going to be there and he knows he’s gonna have the best of time. He’s just afraid not to have the time to make his dad see the Castle before he goes. Because school ends in a week and then it’s only two days before the summer camp starts. It’s not much time and Christopher already tried to make a lot of allusions about the Buck situation in front of his dad but he’s afraid his dad might need a lot more help than he initially thought.
“It’s gonna be good for him.” His abuela answers.
“Who gave you flowers?” His dad asks, pointing at the stargazer bouquet placed on the table.
“Your boy brought them to me this morning.” She says and Christopher frowns. Your boy? Is she maybe talking about B-
“He’s not my-" His dad starts but marks a pause. “Buck brought you flowers?” He asks and Christopher’s smile only gets a bit bigger.
“He did. I needed to change a bulb on my bedroom ceiling light but I didn’t trust myself to do it.” She says and Christopher thinks it’s very nice of Buck to have come help his Abuela, like he does with him every day and like he did with his dad after he got hurt. He’s always taking good care of his family and if you’d ask Christopher, he would say that’s probably the reason why he loves him so much.
“So you called Buck?” His dad asks incredulously. “Why didn’t you call me? I would have come.”
“Oh I would you would have, Eddito.” She answers and pats his dad on the cheek a few times. “But you were already busy with Christopher’s medical appointment." She says. "Besides, Buck was already supposed to come so I could give him the tamales recipe.”
Chris opens his eyes wide and whirls his head around towards his Abuela, his Lego set long forgotten.
His Abuela was very secretive about her recipes. Especially the tamales one. Christopher knew her own dad taught her how to cook and she always refuses to share the recipes with anyone who wasn’t family. Even Miss Flores didn’t have the recipes privileges. This was very sacred. And if Buck could have them then it could only mean one thing: His Abuela definitely knows about the Castle too.
“You-” His dad says but stops mid-sentence. He seems very surprised, just as much as Christopher. “You shared that recipe with him?” He asks. “I thought- I thought it was only reserved f-”
“Only reserved for family?” His Abuela cuts in. “Eddie, are you really telling me this boy is not family? After everything he’s done for y-”
“No, no I know.” His dad says. “And he is.” He adds. “I just-”
“You just what?” His abuela asks. “You know, I never really understood why you wasted your time with that girl.” She continues. She’s talking about Miss Flores – Christopher thinks, sticking two Lego bricks together to pretend he’s still very engrossed in what he's doing – but really all his attention is focused on their discussion.
“Ana?” His dad asks, his eyebrows raised. “What about her? I thought you liked h-”
“I did.” His Abuela answers. Christopher did, too. She was very nice, and she was always helping him with his homework. But Buck was Buck. Nobody would ever measure up to him. Nobody could ever measure up to him “She was a very nice woman. But I knew it wouldn’t last. Not as long as Buck was there.”
“Abuela, I-”
“Edmundo, this boy is a ray of sunshine. Agradezco a Jesus que lo encontraste todos los dias.” She says. “Es perfecto para ti y sé que lo amas.”
“He’s too good for me, Abuela.” His dad admits and Christopher frowns.
“That’s not true.” He says in a whisper even if he knows his dad can’t hear him.
“You deserve nice things, Edmundo.” Abuela concludes, patting his dad on the cheek once again. “Don’t forget that.”
“I wish you could see the whole Castle.” Christopher tells him later when his dad tucks him in.
“The whole Castle?” His dad asks, his smile confused. “What do you mean, mijo?”
“I can’t tell you, yet.” Christopher says, closing his eyes. “You need to figure it out on your own."
                                                        ---
It’s the last day of school and Christopher is running out of time. Buck hasn’t spent a single night with them this week and his dad seems sadder than usual. Or maybe not sad – Christopher thinks, but distracted. He always has this faraway look in his eyes, like he’s thinking of something very important but he can’t make a decision.
Christopher wishes he could help but he knows his dad doesn’t really like to talk about himself and how he feels. And so he observes him quietly from afar, trying to find ways to make him feel better. That’s why he convinced his dad to invite Buck for a movie night after school. Because there’s no one who can cheer him up quite like the way Bucky does.
He’s seated on his chair and he’s drawing a picture of himself with Buck and his dad. He’s been drawing a lot of pictures just like this one for a few weeks because he will be away in that summer camp for Buck’s birthday and so he decided to do a drawing for each day he spends without him to make up for it.
“That’s a nice drawing you did there, Chris.” His teacher says, squatting down next to his table.
“That’s for my second dad.” Christopher nods. “For his birthday.”
“Oh so that’s the famous Buck I keep hearing about.” She says, pointing at the person standing next to his dad.
“Yes, that’s him.” Christopher nods excitedly. “He’s the best.”
“I’m sure he is.” His teacher agrees and turns her head when someone knocks on the door. “Oh, looks like your dad’s here.” She says. Christopher whirls his head around and smiles wildly at his dad who starts conversing with his teacher.
“Are you and your husband going to join us for the end of year picnic tomorrow?” She asks and Christopher smiles cheekily while putting his stuff back in his schoolbag.
“My- my husband?” His dad asks. He sounds very confused.
“Your partner?” His teacher corrects herself. “I’m sorry, from the way Chris talks about his Bucky, I assumed you guys were married.”
“Uh no we’re not- we’re not married. He’s… He’s just my f-” His dad starts but marks a pause. “We’re not married.” He says again.
“My apologies. But you should bring him anyway.” Ms. Walker says. “We’d love to meet him.”
“Uh yeah I- I’m sure he’d like that.” His dad says with a smile.
Christopher follows him out of the classroom and to the car. He fastens his seat-belt and takes the book about space Buck bought for him a few weeks ago. He’s still not done reading it and he really wants to finish it before summer camp so he can discuss it with him.
“Christopher.” His dad calls him from the driver seat. “Why does your teacher think Buck and I are married?” He asks. Christopher was scared his dad would be upset but he only sounds curious. Confused, too.
“Because I told her he was my second dad.” Christopher answers matter-of-factly.
“Why… Why did you do that?”
“Because he is.” Christopher sighs, pressing his hands over his face.
Christopher thinks his dad is going to say something else but he stays very quiet instead. The whole drive is silent until he parks the car on the driveway where Buck is already waiting for them in his truck. He waves at Christopher excitedly and engulfs him into a hug as soon as he’s out of the car.
“Buck!” Christopher exclaims, his smile big. “You’re here early.”
“It’s never too early for my favorite Diaz boy.” He answers, ruffling his hair.
Once inside the house, Christopher lets go of his school bag, takes off his shoes and sits at the table. Buck serves him cereals with milk, accompanied by a glass of orange juice. His dad is seated at the table but he’s still very quiet and for a few seconds Christopher is afraid he might have done something stupid but then Buck slides a second bowl filled with cereals and milk in front of him and his dad smiles softly at him and rolls his eyes.
“What?” Buck defends himself. “I know you’re a sucker for cereals when you’re all cranky.”
“I’m not cranky!”
“Right.” Buck answers, raising his eyebrows, unimpressed. “Eat your cereals, Diaz.”
“Yeah dad.” Christopher repeats. “Eat your cereals.”
Christopher spends the next half hour telling them about his school day and then Buck tells him all about a documentary he saw a few nights ago about the Egyptian Pyramids. Christopher thinks it’s fascinating and after making both his dads promise they would take him in the Egyptian Museum in San Jose, he sits down on the sofa and goes on reading his book about Space.
“Bucky.” He still says after a while.
“Yeah, buddy?”
“I have a drawing for you. Wait here.” Christopher answers. He stands up and opens his school bag, taking the drawing he did in class while he was waiting for his dad to pick him up. He wanted to give it to Buck just before leaving for his summer camp but he feels like maybe it needs to be given now. Maybe that’s the only way for his dad to see the Castle.
Because it is . A Castle. Chrstopher drew a big one at the center, with him, his dad and Buck standing next to it, all smiling.
Christopher gives it to him and he can instantly see a soft smile breaking in on Buck’s face. His dad is watching too over his shoulders, and when Buck looks up at him with a knowing look on his face, Christopher smiles too. He knew Buck would understand.
“It’s… It’s the Castle.” Buck says. Christopher can see that his eyes are filled with tears and so he wraps his small arms around Buck’s shoulders.
“You know about this?” His dad asks after a few seconds, his eyebrows raised in confusion. “You know about the Castle metaphors?” He add. “I mean he actually explained it to you?”
“Uh… Maybe?” Buck says, apologetically.
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“Well I’m not sure you’re quite there yet.” Buck answers and Christopher nods sadly.
“What do you mean I’m not quite there yet?” His dad asks, exasperated. “Can you both stop talking in riddle and tell me what’s going on?”
Christopher signs and looks down at his hands. Maybe this has gone off long enough – he thinks. Maybe it’s time to tell him directly. Maybe that’s what his dad needs, for Christopher and Buck to tell him that’s it’s okay, that no Castle is too big for him. And so he takes the sheet of paper and turns it the other way, revealing what’s written on the back.
“Me and my two dads.”
“That’s the castle, dad.” Christopher finally says. “You’re the castle. You and Bucky.”
“And you too.” Buck adds with a smile and Christopher just nods.
“Hum I- I still don’t get it.” His dad admits and Buck lets out a small laugh. But Christopher can see he’s scared too. He knows it because he doesn’t look at his dad in the eye. He looks down at his hands instead.
“Of course you don’t.” Buck still says with a smile.
“It’s our family.” Christopher clarifies. “And Buck is a part of it.”
“Of course he’s a part of it Chris, but what does it have to do with anyt- Oh.”
“Buck’s been inside the Castle for a very long time, dad.” Christopher explains. “I thought you knew it too. But then you started dating Miss Flores and it wasn’t fair to Bucky.” He adds. “I- I’ve never been mad at you for dating again, dad. I was mad at you because I thought that Bucky was the only one with the key to our Castle but then she was there and he was gone. I felt like you were replacing him and I didn’t like that.”
“Christopher, I-” His dad starts but marks a pause, letting his eyes fall on Buck for a few seconds. Buck is still very quiet and his eyes are bright with tears and they’re still fixed on the few words written on the back of the drawing. “Why didn’t you tell me?” His dad asks.
“I tried.” Christopher says with a small voice. “And Miss Flores was nice.” He adds. “She was nice and I liked her very much but she was-”
“She was never Buck.” His dad finishes for him and Buck whirls his head around to look at his dad in the eye. “What? He’s a smart kid.” His dad says.
“The smartest.” Buck chokes up and tears are rolling down his face. But that’s okay because his dad places both of his hands on his cheeks and wipes them with his thumbs.
“Buck was scared you thought there was no Castle to see.” Christopher explains but frowns when that only makes Bucky cry harder.
“Of course there’s a Castl- Dios.” His dad says, pinching the bridge of his nose with his fingers. “Buck.” He goes on. “Evan.” He adds, and Buck finally looks up at him. “Of course there’s a Castl- god, I’ve had enough with these Castle references.” He says, and Buck laughs through his tears. “Of course you’re a part of this family, Buck. You always have. Always will.”
“Always.” Christopher agrees, placing his small hand over Buck’s. “You should kiss him now, dad.”
“I should, right?” His dad says cheekily, cradling Buck’s chin with his right hand and pressing their lips together. Only for a few seconds, though. Otherwise that’s just too gross – Christopher thinks. His dad then whispers something along the line of Christopher was right and you do have the keys to my heart and Christopher doesn’t really understand what that means but Bucky throws his head backwards, laughing, so Christopher only guesses his dad must be doing something good.
“You didn’t just say that, Diaz.” Buck says. “That’s sappy as hell, even for you.” He adds and his dad taps him on the back of his neck again, still smiling.
Christopher eventually looks away though and focuses on his book about Space once again because his job here is done:
The Castle Operation is officially a success.

JAMAIS VU | TEASER 2
Tumblr media
Namjoon & A-Young
Kim Moon-Jae - Two years old
He was born in September, just like his dad and Jungkook
Namjoon had wanted to become a dad so bad, he seamlessly welcomed his role and made it look easy, the way he took care of his little boy
Ever since he was a newborn, Namjoon would take him to the studio and put him to sleep in his little Moses basket while he worked
it wasn't long before Joon discovered he liked Mono and he tended to leave his phone next to his song with the playlist playing while he worked on something else
Jungkook dotes on the boy
literally won’t put him down
from the day he was born, JK would just look at him while he slept with his big doe eyes, he sometimes sings to the baby too
Moon-Jae is a very calm baby, even in his terrible twos
he’s happy with just sitting with his toys and looking at his mom while she moves around the house
he started babbling when he was barely six months old
when he said his first word, A-Young was busy with Jimin and Tae’s sons and he screamed EOMMA at the top of his little lungs
we could say he is a bit of a mom and dad boy
he loves laying in Namjoon’s chest while he reads his bedtime story
(most of the time they both fall asleep together and A-Young finds them in the nursery chair knocked out)
He’s the closest in age to Chimae and Sangwoo, but he’s a little jealous that his cousins can do things that he is not allowed because he’s younger
he can drink from a glass, the baby cup is for BABIES
so he just gravitates towards Nabi, Sangwoo’s older sister
Jin & Yura
Kim Yoojin & Kim Yoosun (Twins) - Seven years old
after saying time and time again that they were okay with only one child twins came along
Jin would be lying if he said he wasn't thrilled but it was scary at first
he was the first one of the seven to become a dad, to twins no less, might scare everyone
but when his baby girl Yoojin was born and, ten minutes later, he held his boy Yoosun, he just knew he would do anything for them
they were born in the middle of August, much to Yura’s relief, if she had had to carry them for longer she would have cried
the boys loved how, since it was so hot that summer, Jin had them in their crib in diapers
Yoongi adored looking at them cuddle together and caress their little arms and tummies
he loved their smooth baby skin
as they grew up, Yoosun became a really bright bean, a people’s little person while his sister became more like her mom, calm and with very intelligent eyes
they both love their parents equally but each one gravitates towards either Jin (Yoojin) or Yura (Yoosun)
since they’re the oldest of the bangtan babies, they like to take care of their small cousins
in their seven years of life, they have spent a total of a week apart and they don't want to try that again
like EVER
NEVER EVER AGAIN
Yoongi & Hyejin
Min Ara - Six months old
Yoongi and Hyejin waited a few years to try for a baby after they got married
then baby Are came along
when they told the boys and their families they were pregnant a lot of people cried
they had seen how deeply Yoongi loved all his nephews and nieces, how his face filled with adoration when he held them
they respected his and Hyejin’s wish to wait to start a family, but everyone wanted him to become a father deep down
Ara was born in January and his uncles Jimin, Hoseok and Namjoon, who only had boys, bought her the pinkiest fluffiest coats they could find
for a couple of months, the baby looked like she was drowning in pink furs
now that she’s six months old, she sleeps through the night and she is just at that age where she doesn't understand when she has a sleepover with her cousins
Jin absolutely adores Ara
after his little-not-so-little Yoojin, Ara is the apple of his eye, and it is strange the day he doesn't visit Genius Lab too see his little niece
either that or he calls Hyejin non-stop when they have a schedule to coo at the baby
you would think Namjoon is not allowed to hold the baby, but nothing further from the truth
Yoongi trust him with his life when it comes to his daughter
the first time she smiled, Joon was holding her to his chest and moving her little hand to say hi to her dad
Yoongi cried a little that day
Hoseok & Haneul
Jung Hyuk-Jae - Four years old
are we even surprised this boy is the happiest little boy on earth
he was born in November, a year after his parents got married
he was the first boy to be born after Yoosun and his cousin was so happy to finally be a hyung
his eyes were always open, inquisitive and taking everything in the world in
his mom loved strapping him to her chest and dance around the house while the two were alone, the baby moving his little legs and waving his little fists around
Hoseok would return home most days to a similar picture, feeling energised after a long day only by looking at them
Hyuk-Jae can't fall asleep without his parents caressing his chest and arms
(are we reminded of someone else)
when he feels tired, he nests into Hoseok’s chest and caresses his lips with his little finger, that’s how his dad knows he’s ready for bed
he loves drawing with his cousins, and loves teaching Moon-Jae all the letters that he has learnt in kindergarten
when he grows up he wants Uncle Yoongi to show him how to make music and become a rapper just like his dad
when he comes from kinder, he doesn't let go of his mom for a little while, needing to spend a little quiet time so he’s ready to play with his dad when he comes home
Jimin & Kae-Hwa
Park Chimae - Three years old
Chimae was born two weeks before Sangwoo, Tae’s son, in May
their wives tease them constantly about this, asking if they were so sneaky they planned to have children at the same time so they could be vmin 2.0
they deny it (even if they were so happy when they told each other they were having babies at the same time oooops)
Chimae is the sweetest little boy
he is just like his dad, all fluffy cheeks, smily eyes and the happiest giggle in the world
even if him and Sangwoo are not blood brothers, Jin likes to tease their fathers telling them that the babies are even closer than his twins
good luck separating them, boys
Chim ADORES his parents and his uncle Joon, always gravitating to them in a loud room, seeking comfort and warmth to cuddle
oh yeah, he’s a cuddle bug, doing that little thing, rubbing his cheek against his uncle Joon’s chest and nesting against him
he loves falling asleep between his mom and dad, holding one of their fingers in each tiny fist and feeling them close
his mom loves to buy diminutive versions of Jimin’s outfits to have Chim dress like him
they would both enter the studio hand in hand, sporting identical Chanel jumpers, jeans and Gucci sunglasses and no one would bat an eyelid
the poor thing has two left feet, but that doesn't stop him copying his dad’s moves to the best of his abilities
Taehyung & Iseul
Kim Nabi - Five years old
now, when Tae said he wanted a big family he wasn't joking
he and his wife were pregnant within a month of their wedding
Nabi was born in February, a few days after her uncle Hobi, which guaranteed huge birthday parties when she got old enough
she wanted a princesses-themed birthday party, uncle Hobi got her the dresses and was the first one there, dressed as Elsa from Frozen
she was a fussy baby, which didn't sit well with her mom, but her dad was there at all times
his insomnia actually got better once he matched his sleeping schedule with his baby’s
in a good night she would wake up maybe a couple of times, and there was Tae, bottle at the ready, singing lullabies for his little girl in his deep voice
in a bad night, well, let’s just say Tae was used to functioning on little to no sleep
even if she is the closest with Yoojin, her best friend is her cousin Nari
she insists it was fate (not her mom’s intentional choosing) that their names match so well
she has always had a soft spot for Moon-Jae and you can often find them both playing together when Chimae and Sangwoo run off somewhere to stir trouble
Kim Sangwoo - Three years old
two years after Nabi was born, just when she was starting to pick up a normal sleeping schedule, Iseul found out she was pregnant with Sangwoo
she was expecting another difficult baby and she couldn't be happier to have been wrong (at the beginning, lol)
he was quiet and happy
he loved just lying there between his sister and Chimae, babbling away
The two boys seemed stuck at the hip, if you so much as lifted one to change his diaper, the other would scream his little lungs out
then he started crawling and OH BOY
he found out that he could see Chimae from his dad phone in the screen so he started sneakily trying to find it to call his best friend... he was only eighteen months old
where Chimae was calm, Sangwoo compensated being an active little firecracker
if you wanted to know where the two were, you just had to wait until Chimae pulled your jean leg because he thought Sangwoo was doing something dangerous
most times those dangerous things were stealing cookies from the kitchen cabinet, but our Chimae here is an innocent little angel
Jungkook & Mi-Hi
Jeon Jina - newborn
Jungkook and Mi-Hi were still young when they got married, so it made sense to wait
besides, if an occasional burst of baby fever struck, either one of them could just call any of the other parents and offer to babysit
it stayed like that for almost six years, both Kookie and Mi-Hi being the fun aunt and uncle who bought the children candy, took them on fun rides to the park or to the beach
they were each child’s first time on Disneyland
well, it lasted until Namjoon and A-Young had Moon-Jae
Jungkook went mental for the child, he wouldn't know how to explain what went through him, but he just couldn't put the baby down
he loved all his nieces and nephews equally, but just looking at his hyung’s baby moon...
he would come home only talking about babies, showing Mi-Hi the countless pictures he had taken of Moon-Jae
she would sense that characteristic baby smell in his clothes when she hugged him
it reached a point when both of them sat down and admitted to each other how badly they wanted to start a family
it took them a while, but after nearly a year and a half, they were happily announcing they were expecting a little girl
Jina, being the youngest of the family, has everyone wrapped around her little finger
it would be difficult to tell which of her uncles is more whipped for her, Hoseok going so far as to admitting to JK that after spending so much time with the little girl, he wanted to talk to Haneul about trying for a girl
it is still way too soon to tell who she takes after, but what’s for sure is that she got her dad’s doe eyes
