It has come to my attention that SOME OF YOU who read my last Byler post remain UNCONVINCED. So I'm gonna tack onto it this:
I'm older than fucking God and air, and I've been out and proud since 2007. Yes, I know what homophobia is, and yes, I know what queerbaiting is. I know about Supernatural and Teen Wolf and Sherlock and blahdyblahdyblah. No new ground is being covered here. I thought I made that clear in the original post, but, clearly, I did not.
I am aware of queerbaiting and homophobia, and I'm still wholeheartedly certain in Byler being canon anyway.
Okay, so there are three types of relationship I want to discuss when it comes to queerbaiting. They're all, like, "queer relationships that could have happened, but didn't".
First off, queer-coding. This isn't really a thing so much anymore, but it still crops up every once in a while. I'd argue it probably happens most with male-male relationships in family shows these days. First example that comes to mind is Mr. Smiley and Mr. Frowny from Steven Universe. You can't make a relationship canon because some shitty overhead bastard overhead said no, so you get as close as you can without compromising the show. Can't make someone gay? Well, now their comedy routine is a blatant allegory for a romantic relationship. Boom-shaka-laka. This is something I don't see being a problem with regards to Stranger Things, but I want it to be there as contrast, a demonstration of one of many things queerbaiting is not. However, one could argue that, thus far, Will Byers is, canonically, queer-coded. It's pretty fucking heavily implied in the show, and the creators have confirmed it, and you're gonna be able to see it if you're not FUCKING BLIND, but word of god is not technically canon which means that interviews don't technically make something canon, blahdyblahdyblahdyblah, technicalities, Robin has been explicitly stated in the text to be queer while Will has, thus far, not, outside of good ol' Show-Don't-Tell. Of course, anyone with two brain cells to rub together can tell that that's going to change by the end of Season 5, but, hey, for what it's worth, I'm throwing this out there.
Alrighty, Thingamajingama Number Two: "Oops, I accidentally made the greatest love story known to man." AKA, a genuine, honest-to-goodness mistake. Unfortunately, we do live in a heteronormative society. Sometimes people who don't think about being gay much write a friendship that's incredibly compelling and don't even consider the possibility that it could have been read as romantic. Something something Top Gun something. This is, again, not queerbaiting. This is Steddie, this is Ronance, this is Elmax, this is your favorite flavor of non-canon ship this week, this is not Byler. The creators know DAMN well what they're doing. They've talked about it. We know this. Nothing new here.
Which brings us to the topic of discussion here. Actual queerbaiting. This usually starts out as an "accidental greatest love story", and then reacts to fan response. And when I say "reacts", I mean like a goddamn chemical reaction. Like bleach and ammonia, bitch. It's noxious and it's gonna kick your fucking ass without mercy. This is when a creator is like, "Hey, let's get our queer audience invested, but we're not actually going to give them what they want because our straight audience isn't here for that/we personally think it's gross/we don't give enough of a shit to want to research a goddamn thing to write a real gay character," blah blah blah whatever excuse they want to come up with this time.
And when you think "queerbaiting", I want you to think "bullying". Because that's what it is. It's lucrative bullying, like beating us up and taking our lunch money, but it's bullying all the same. And it's a real goddamn thing, even if people misuse the word a lot, often when they mean one of the two above, sometimes when they mean "bury your gays", which is another homophobic thing entirely that I'm not going to get into here. Queerbaiting is the thing we're focused on, and it's real, and it's bullying. And here's the reason I want you to think of it as bullying:
They
Think
It's
Funny.
They are actively making fun of us.
That's why Dean had the "Cas, get out of my ass," line in Supernatural. It's why the "Do you like boys?" line happened in Teen Wolf. It's why "Lie with me, Watson," happened in the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies. Because "It's just a joke, mate." "It was just a prank, bro." "You didn't really think it would happen, did you?" "You should see your face."
So here's probably the biggest reason I don't think it's specifically queerbaiting in this specific instance of Will Byers and Mike Wheeler.
Stranger Things has never, not once, made a gay joke. Ever.
Every single time queerness comes up, it's dead serious.
Lonnie calls Will a fag, and the show is not at all reluctant to show what a goddamn horrible person he is. And when Hopper latches onto that, it's not as "Hahah, is he gay, though?" It's because he's trying to determine a potential motive for Will's disappearance, and even if someone had interpreted it as a joke, Joyce immediately has a line that functions as snapping her fingers in front of the audience's face and yelling "FOCUS" when she says "He's MISSING." Basically outright saying "This isn't funny!"
Troy calls him a fairy, along with targeting Lucas and Dustin for their skin color and disability respectively, and Mike gets damn near murderous. Troy is portrayed as a goddamn monster and the show portrays it as justice when El makes him piss his pants and later breaks his arm.
Steve calls Jonathan "queer" as a slur and gets the shit beat out of him for it.
Billy's father is revealed to be homophobic and abusive in the same breath.
Mike says "It's not my fault you don't like girls!" and we're shown how devastated Will is and Mike immediately follows him to beg for forgiveness.
There is a joke in Robin's coming-out scene, but it's not at Robin's expense. It's at Steve's. Specifically for being heteronormative.
Jonathan has multiple scenes where he's trying so hard to tell Will that he's always going to love him as he is, whether he's gay or not, without pressuring him to come out before he's ready.
Even when there's a little bit of ribbing at Robin's expense, it's always because she's an awkward nerd who's nervous around pretty girls, just the same as Lucas and Dustin are teased when they both first develop crushes on Max, and even then, even then, it always comes as a package deal where they make fun of Steve's girl problems at the same time.
Stranger Things is an emphatically pro-gay show. It may not be the core point of the show the way it is in, say, Our Flag Means Death, but there is nothing less than respect for its queer characters. Its queer characters are always taken completely seriously. No one is making fun of us. They never have. That's why I have serious doubts that this is queerbaiting. It would come completely out of left field for the bullying to start in Stranger Things' final season.
So it's not at all likely to be queerbaiting because queerness is taken completely seriously. The creators have talked about Will's queerness, at least, so it's not an accident. And queer-coding would be silly to expect from this show when it's already on its final season. Like, what is Netflix gonna do? Cancel it? Not to mention all the explicit queerness that's in there already. And no one's gonna "What about the children?" a show that's had sex scenes in it since the first season.
There's no fakeout here. It's gonna happen. Breathe.

"But aro/ace people still can date" THAT IS NOT A VALID EXCUSE, MUCH LESS IF THE CHARACTER SHOWS REPULSION TOWARDS THAT TYPE OF RELATIONSHIPS.
"But the creator said we could ship him with whoever we wanted, it won't be canon anyway" OF COURSE SHE DOESN'T BOTHER THAT YOU SHIP HIM BECAUSE 1: IT BENEFITS HER BECAUSE IT ATTRACTS SHIPS FANS. AND 2: SHE DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY.
"We have not deleted the representation, it is still there, it is canon in the show. We just want to have fun, the things the fandom does do not have to be faithful to the canon and do not affect the canon" SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LISTEN. IN THE FANDOM THERE ARE PEOPLE FROM THE AROACE SPECTRUM AND IT ANNOYS US THAT WE CAN'T ENJOY A CHARACTER THAT REPRESENTS US JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN ENJOY THE CHARACTERS WITHOUT SHIPING THEM. ALSO IF YOU CAN'T WRITE CHARACTERS OR RELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE NOT ROMANTIC/SEXUAL OR THAT ARE NOT FAITHFUL TO THE CANON THEN LET ME TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE A VERY CLOSED MIND AND YOU'RE LACK OF IMAGINATION. THERE ARE ALSO MANY CHARACTERS THAT ARE NOT AROACE THAT YOU CAN SHIP, WHY DO YOU CHOOSE THE ONE WHO IS AROACE?!! US AROACE PEOPLA ALSO WANT TO HAVE FUN, WE ARE ALSO IN THE FANDOM, AND WE ENTERED THE FANDOM EXPECTING TO SEE THAT THEY RESPECT THE ORIENTATION OF THE CHARACTER AND REFLECT OUR OWN EXPERIENCES IN HIM, BUT WE FIND OUT THAT THEY DON'T GIVE A SHIT, AND WE FEEL BAD WHEN SEEING THAT YK. IT'S THE SAME SHIT AS MAKING A GAY CHARACTER STRIGHT.
"I'm dating someone who is ace/I'm on the aroace spectrum/I'm ace/my partner is on the aroace spectrum and in my opinion there's nothing wrong with shipping him" ...REALLY? JUST. REALLY?! LOOK AT ME IN THE EYES AND TELL ME YOU'RE NOT A TROLL, BECAUSE SERIOUSLY. FOR THE ARO/ACE PEOPLE WHO ARE MAKING THESE COMMENTS LET ME TELL YOU THAT YOU LOOK LIKE THOSE HOMOPHOBIC GAY WHO INSULT THEIR OWN COMMUNITY FOR THE APPROVAL OF STRAIGHT PEOPLE.
"If they want representation so much, why don't they make their own content and their own shows with Aroace characters?" ...YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS EITHER. YOU ARE A TROLL, RIGHT? AND IF YOU'RE SERIOUS... DO YOU THINK IT'S THAT EASY TO MAKE CONTENT (BOOK/COMIC/TV SHOW/MOVIE/ETC)???
Edit:
OH AND I FORGOT THE WORST ONE, SORRY.
"Aro/ace people can also want and be in a romantic/sexual relationship, you are erasing people from your own community just because you don't want us to ship it" ...FIRST OF ALL DO YOU THINK AROACE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THOSE RELATIONSHIPS FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH YOU USING THEM AS A CHEAP EXCUSE? YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE, YOU JUST CARE ABOUT YOUR DAMN SHIP, STOP USING THEM AS AN EXCUSE. AND SECOND, I THINK YOU HAVE A VERY ALTERED PERCEPTION OF REALITY, BECAUSE THE ONE WHO IS ERASING AND DISRESPECTING THE AROACE COMMUNITY IS NOT US, IT IS YOU DAMN IT.
End of the edit.
PEOPLE ON THE SPECTRUM GET VERY EXCITED WHEN WE SEE A CHARACTER THAT REPRESENTS US, AND I THINK WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO GET ANGRY IF WHEN WE ENTER THE FANDOM WE FIND THAT PEOPLE DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THE ORIENTATION OF THE CHARACTER AND SHIP HIM, AND TO GET WORSE THEY GIVE US SO BAD EXCUSES OF WHY WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS PERFECTLY FINE. LOOK, DON'T YOU THINK THAT IF AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY IS UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THOSE SHIPS THEN THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG? NO? HAVE YOU NOT THOUGHT ABOUT IT? THEN YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR HEAD TO SEE IF YOU REALLY HAVE A BRAIN!!! IT'S SEEMS YOU HAVE IT OFF BECAUSE IT IS NOT WORKING.
AND YES I'M TALKING ABOUT HAZBIN HOTEL AND ALASTOR BUT THIS ALSO HAPPENS WITH MANY OTHER AROACE CHARACTERS (UNFORTUNATELY). AND IT'S SO FRUSTRATING. DO YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THAT REPRESENTATION HAS TO BE JUST THE CANON OF THE SHOW? DON'T YOU THINK THAT AS A FANDOM YOU SHOULD MAKE THE PEOPLE OF THE COMMUNITY WHO ARE IN THE FANDOM FEEL COMFORTABLE BY RESPECTING THEIR ORIENTATION AND MAKING FANFIC AND FANARTS ETC THAT REPRESENT THE CHARACTER AND HIS IDENTITY?
Tumblr media
(AND THOSE OTHER CHARACTERS I MENTIONED ARE NOT CANONICALLY AROACE, BUT THEY ARE EVIDENTLY CHARACTERIZED AS SUCH, BUT THE FANDOM MAKES THE EXCUSE THAT "THEIR ORIENTATION IS STILL NOT CANON" TO SHIP THEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS EVIDENT THAT THEY ARE AROACE AND THEY REPUDIATE SEX AND LOVE. AND NOW THAT WE HAVE A CHARACTER CHARACTERIZED AS AROACE WHO IS CANONICALLY AROACE AND SHOWS REPUDION TOWARDS SEX, THEY CONTINUE LOOKING FOR EXCUSES. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ALL?! IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO RESPECT THE AROACE COMMUNITY??? )

since there's a lot accounts that either don't have a dni, or will say something vague like, "just be nice", and i don't want to risk reblogging any selfship posts from antis/people who will be rude or violent towards me and other proshippers for interacting:
if you are not proship and make selfship posts, but are fine with proshippers interacting with you, please in some way interact with this post! like it, comment, reblog, whatever—feel free to even specify that you're not proship, just fine with us interacting if you want to make sure your followers don't get confused
but also, if you are proship and you make selfship posts, feel free to interact as well! i just want to expand the amount of people who i'm reblogging from because i feel like i'm only reblogging from the same handful of folks, and well, i want this be a blog that showcases the welcoming and kind side of the selfship community as a whole—proship or not 💛
also, for those who don't know what the proship stance is, or those who have been misinformed, here is the definition of proship and an explanation of what being proship means:
proship means you pro/for shipping, the same way someone who is pro abortion is pro/for abortion, "pro" is not short problematic like some will try to say it
this is a belief that people should not be shamed or harrassed for the ship dynamics they like or engage in with fictional characters, even if those dynamics are ones you find disgusting, squicky, or triggering. blocking, blacklisting, and or just ignoring tags and users is encouraged
it does not mean that you like every ship dynamics, or even the people who ship those dynamics, it just means you acknowledge the fact that while fiction affects reality, it does not do so on a 1 to 1 ratio
like how watching a horror movie may upset you or may make you excited, it is not going to make you a murder, or even make you want to murder people. and in the very rare case that someone does decide to commit a murder after being inspired by a horror movie, the blame still lies fully on them because they still made the choice the murder, the movie may have caused inspiration but it did not force them to act on those inspirations. giving any blame to the movie in this case is saying that people are not responsible for their actions, that emotions and feelings are understandable excuses, removes accountability from and give justification to abusers, and allows other kinds of abusers to use similar means of defense such as "well, she was wearing a short skirt and i couldn't help myself!"
and for an example specifically about not liking ships, i do not like ships featuring any child aged characters, including child x child/teen/adult, loli, shota, etcetera, but i do not harrass, shame, and or accuse these people of being pedophiles or anything. i block people who ship these ships and block any related tags to avoid seeing this kind of dynamic but that's it. i acknowledge that people who like seeing murder in media most often have no desire to see murder in real life and that this same logic applies to other crimes depicted in fiction, such as incest, domestic abuse, and yes, even pedophilia
being proship also doesn't mean shutting down discussions around media, it just means not censoring that media so that those discussions can take place. to give an example, i find racist and homophobic stories, movies, etcetera disgusting but i do not want them censored, because if we censor them we remove our means to analyze, debate, and discuss these stories/etcetera and the people who make them
take the phenomenon around the popularity of Fifty Shades of Gray where suddenly there was a lot of new easily accessible information on how those scenes were wrong, but here's how to do kink properly and safely. if we had censored Fifty Shades of Gray out of fear people would have began sexually abusing each other, we never would have gotten all the wonderful education and discussions that we did
also, proship refers solely to the belief, not the dynamics of certain ships often associated with proshipper. either you are proship, a proshipper, or you beliving in proshipping, but you cannot ship a "proship" nor is there such thing a "proship ship" since proship is a belief, not a dynamic
*note, if you wish just to reblog the definition and explanation of proship that i gave, you can find it here: [○•♡click here♡•○]

there is always going to be something a little off-putting to me about claiming a definitive canon sexuality for a character that doesn't actually have one.
like, we all have our headcanons, of course. and that's fine. but there's a world of difference between "i headcanon this character as gay" and "this character is gay in canon", and so frequently the latter isn't even true. if it's not stated in the source material nor by the creator, then it isn't canon. and that's okay!!
like, okay, it doesn't affect me anyway because no listed sexuality could ever stop me from shipping what i want to, but also... this is so often just an excuse to be mad at people for shipping "the wrong thing". it also tends to dip really uncomfortably into biphobic/panphobic territory.
to use a relevant example, unless ryoko kui has officially stated marcille and/or falin are lesbians (i don't think she has?), you cannot act like they are canonically. not only do they have no in-canon definitive romance (because dunmeshi is not a romance story), but even if you interpret their bond as queer (and like, most of us do, i certainly do), that doesn't for sure mean they only like women. you can headcanon that they do, but you can't harass other fans for not treating them that way. you have to accept that they will both be shipped with men, and it's not homophobia unless the shipper in question is actually, you know, being homophobic about it.
nothing another fan does will ever change what happened in canon, nor alter your own fanwork. you can do whatever you want forever. if someone making your fave blorbo a sexuality you don't agree with pisses you off, block them. if they ship things you hate so much that it makes you mad, block them. you're allowed to. this is your space to curate as you please.
people on the other side do it, too. "ummm chilchuck has a wife" is something i've seen slung at m/m ships for him. not only does his canon wife (who, you know, left his ass, stop acting like shipping him with anyone else is unreasonable on that alone) not preclude headcanoning him as gay if you want to, but it ABSOLUTELY doesn't preclude him being bisexual. for fuck's sake. gay and straight are not the only sexualities. i'm going to drop the contents of a dirty litterbox on your head.
like... genuinely, headcanon whatever you want. you could make everyone in the cast the same exact sexuality if you wanted to. what you shouldn't be doing is acting like anyone else is beholden to your ideas. or, hell, even canon's ideas. fandom is about the freedom to do what you want with your blorbos. have fun with it and stop blaming other fans for not making the content YOU want.

For decades slash fandom made art and fic about masc cishet characters in gay relationships and begged on their hands and fucking knees for a gay character and then the second they got a real fag they immediately accused him of being an interloper, made excuses as to why he would be against kink or call the cops on drag queens in a modern au or whatever bullshit they think, did olympic level mental gymnastics to explain why he's actually a man's man despite canonical dialogue to the contrary and the entire narrative of the show he's in hinging on the fact that he can't even fake it, and shipped his leatherman boyfriend (who they also character assassinated, this time for racist reasons as well as homophobic ones) with the nearest subtexually gay homophobic masc4masc (in a show where everyone is gay mind you) they could fucking find despite the fact that said boyfriend doesn't even like the guy and I'm never gonna let yall live it down as long as I fucking live. Here I was thinking you actually gave a fuck about gay men instead of just getting your rocks off to the idea of two hetties making out. If you wanted to do the subtext puzzle forever you should have never left the supernatural fandom. Go ship those fucking metalheads from stranger things and leave us alone.
Just, it has become abundantly clear to me that there was always a reason you fuckers were into Hamilton instead of Rent, and did the most to turn Captain America: Winter Soldier into a tragic romance between Steve and Buckey instead of a superhero action movie but never fucking bothered to watch Moonlight. It's because you don't actually like gay men. This is the reason that Destiel is still the top ship on AO3 to this fucking day. It's because none of you can handle real gays.

Hoooooooooboyyyyyyyyy...
Tumblr media
I've spent most of my years in the gravity falls fandom as a kid/teen.
And I kinda resent seeing adult fans turn a comforting kids show about embracing your inner kid and not being ashamed of fun, into a dramatic, petty morality obsessed, soap opera...
Like- its really uncomfortable the way most of the adult characters are depicted in fanon, it doesn't feel "more realistic" it feels like the adult fans are kind of ashamed of any interpretation that isn't "acceptably mature".
______
For example: The way Stan and Ford are turned into the worst versions of Batman.
Stan and Ford are often depicted with a subtle but important edge that isn't necessarily present in canon.
Especially in fanworks wich focuse on them instead of the broader family.
As if their softer, goofier sides are just a front for the sake of the kids rather than fundamental parts of who they are as characters.
They're not.
They're just as important as their more "serious grown up moments"
Stan and Ford aren't adult characters in an adult show, they're adult characters in a kids show and their silliness is essential.
Their approachable, softer, kinder, moments, are vital, as authority figures in a show where the intended audience is expected to relate to the children they are responsible for.
Their vulnerability and screwing up is an important aspect of the show, showing kids that adults don't know everything and it's important to question them when they make mistakes.
"Adults are often just as afraid as you are and it's OK for them to express that, it's also important that they don't make it you're responsibility to deal with" is at the core of the way Stan, Ford and most adults in the show are depicted.
It's a comforting and affirming theme to have in a show about two kids on the brink of losing that childhood wonder, or at least afraid of losing it.
As Mabel says:
"They got... stupid. Promise me we won't get stupid."
______
I've seen so many adults make these characters more "adult" to appeal to them and it isn't even bad, it's just uncomfortable... it feels wrong.
Fiddleford is another adult character that I often see treated like this:
A lot of depictions of younger fidds I've seen (especially within the context of shipping him with ford) basically turn him into a conflicted love interest lady having an affair with her negligent boss in a stupid 80s movie-
I'm not getting into how fiddauthor is being used as a "safe ship" by the broader fandom and being stripped of its nature as a character dynamic and used as a tool to excuse morality based shaming and harassment by grown adults over stupid cartoon men-with cucumber shaped noses
It gives off similar vibes to certain queer peeps appealing to homophobes by throwing less "digestible" queer people under the bus and its not that serious its cartoon shipping for fucks sake
it's so uncomfortable when you remember he's a silly little hillbilly man.
His name is FIDDLEFORD.
MC. GUCKET. (•□•)
He's got depth and serious moments for days but he's also introduced screaming and jigging and slapping a sandwich out of someone's hands.
He contains multitudes withing his vegetable shaped head.
He's not Ford's frustrated underpaid secretary (as funny as that sounds)
______
Emotional depth and maturity aren't exclusively adult things.
The bloody "Goofy Movie" isn't suddenly an adult film because it has moments of quiet maturity and melancholy, along-side the expected goofyness.
That sense of quiet maturity isn't age locked in reality and I'm so tired of it feeling like it is.
It's not wrong or bad to depict more mature things with a story and characters aimed at kids.
But I think it's very disingenuous to dismiss the lighter elements in favour of the moments that "go over kids heads" they don't.
Even if the kid doesn't understand the adult joke, they can tell something is off and it's annoying how smug grown ups are about it.
I know Gravity Falls itself has that tone so I might aswell be complaining about fire burning or ice melting.
But it's taken to such extremes that it makes my inner kid feel like grown ups are twisting one of the few things I have and making it about themselves again... that's uncomfortably personal and petty I know.
But the reality is, that's been my experience for the majority of my time in this fandom.
Only in the past few years have I grown out of the "baby fan" vibe and it's going to shape my reactions to fanworks regardless.
______
For another example cartoon characters swearing isn't bad.
But it's jarring when adult behaviours (which more often than not means behaving like an ass) are superimposed onto child friendly characters, and these behaviours are taken for granted as "more realistic and natural" it's just... like no that's not true.
There are adults who don't like swearing or drinking or smoking, there are kids I knew when I was little (11 - 14) who enjoyed doing all those things for better or worse.
Seeing Teenagers complaining about 40+ year old characters being "infantilised" or "UwU-ified" as if grown ups can't be vulnerable is just saddening.
Adult female fans complaining that male characters aren't "man enough" is kinda scary to be honest, especially when those softer depictions are usually from teens and maybe even young boys/men in my case.
The problem is behaviours and perspectives are so strictly coded and enforced that even in a sub-community of a sub-community you get people enforcing arbitrary codes of conduct or depiction.
It's a kids show.
Relax.
He said to himself as much as whoever bothered to read this far.
I'm gonna go have a glass of water and some fresh air, if you've read this far I'd recommend doing so too but also, despite the tone of this wall of text, I'm not your dad.

Me waiting for homophobes to come up with a better excuse than, "why can't they just be friends" because I can easily counter with, "bitch, you say this everytime you see a gay ship. Why can't they just be dating?"
Like, people turn down ships just because they are queer more than people can ship queer things now. I'm not sorry I want to see people like me on tv. And, when people say, "this queer agenda/media is being shoved down our throats"....WHERE?! SIGN ME UP, PLEASE CAUSE EVERY SLIGHTLY HOMOEROTIC SHOW I LIKE IS CANCELLED OR WRITERS DENY ANY HOMOEROTIC SUBTEXT THEN ADD LINES TO MAKE THE AUDIENCE FEEL LIKE SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN BETWEEN A QUEER SHIP JUST TO CALL US CRAZY AND SAY IT NEVER HAPPENED AND KEEP US WATCHING.
I'm sorry, but so many fandoms and shows I'm a part of don't seem to realize that people shipping your characters in a way you don't want them to isn't an excuse to bash the people who are supporting what you create. Thats why I so heavily appreciate shows like Good Omens. the main characters are in love. And people are allowed to ship. And make fanart. And write fanfiction. And the cast supports it. I am so grateful for this fandom cause it showed me that I'm not a freak for shipping something just because it is queer.

Can't we respect peoples opinions without being hateful?
Reminder that I used to ship Mileven and then I went onto Pinterest and it slowly started feeding me Byler stuff and then I was like... ohhhhhhhhhhhh thats so true!!
Because I'm OPEN to the idea of change and open to people being LGBTQ+ in shows.
What I'm trying to say is that a lot of Mileven shippers aren't open to change or are homophobic, and obviously some of them aren't problematic, but heaps of them are, and idk just like
You can ship Mileven and be a good person. You can CHOOSE not to send hateful anons to people who are just expressing their opinion.
You can CHOOSE to mind your business when a post doesn't apply to the ships you prefer.
You can CHOOSE to not call people awful slurs and insults because you don't like a specific ship.
You can CHOOSE to be a nice person. Can't we all be nice to each other?
You have NO right to be spreading hate just because you cant handle the fact that your precious ship is being "threatened" by others.
Heres an example of a nice, respectful, civil, response to a Byler post!
"Oh, I personally don't ship Byler, i like Mileven more, but I respect your opinion!"
And some of this does apply to Byler shippers as well! There are toxic shippers in every fandom.
EVERYONE!! There is no need to go onto a tag or post and spread hate just because you don't like the ship. Keep your hate to yourself.
Of course, in some cases, arguing your point is ok. If the person who posted has invited debates, or if they are being homophobic or bigoted, then sure. Make your point. All I'm saying is that there is no need to spread hate on a post that doesn't relate to you.
BUT, it is a totally valid excuse to fight with romantic Stobin shippers, I don't care what you say to them, because what the fuck are they doing, SHE IS CANONICALLY A LESBIAN.
All in all, why the hate? Can't we choose to be a nice person?
I didn't want to make a serious post, but there has been so much hate lately, (on both sides, but mainly Mileven as far as I have seen, especially with the hate anons,) I just wanted to say this and get it off my chest.
Hopefully people take something from this, idk what I'm doing.

Oh Goldy I've seen literally every explanation and excuses from this 'fandom' on why Jkk decided to enlist together
They've tattoos, they are same hometown, they didn't had option, it's fanservice, it's because Jin is there, JK is forced, they are real brothers
"Do you think it's a gay bar for gay couple to go together ? If anything this canceled Jikook ship as a whole as a couple in homophobic country won't enlist together"
How shitkookers feel after saying this: 🤡💪
If 2017 GCFT was what made them mental retraeds for 1st time... this enlistment is making them totally lose it. I hope bt travel show coming out they'll consider jumping off the cliff 🥺🤞🤞🤞 because it's better not to be alive as a tkkr to face post military jkk lmao...
They are grasping at straws because they have nothing to stand on. The best they can do is troll. That's all they doing is trolling 🤣 😂 💀
They sound as if Gay men don't go to the military together all the time. It's mandatory service they won't be exempt just because they are queer.
And yes, they are going to be under close scrutiny especially on mere suspicion of their sexuality- their privacy will be violated, people will be suspicious of them- unfortunately all that will happen because that's just what homophobia is and from what I hear it's quit prevalent in the SK military and even straight dudes who get suspected of being queer get burned.
The difference here is, Jikook have some clout and some privilege going in there. I don't expect them to be given special treatment just because they are the most successful boy band on earth right now but that type of success comes with social clout and currency.
Unfortunately they won't tell us the struggles they face in there because of their fame, looks, sexual orientation, skintone, height, features- even if we know they do face these micro discriminations- I mean we know they make fun of eachother jx because they get tanned etc.
I'm being sensitive because I find a lot of these things triggering for me. It's giving boarding school all over again.
We might wait have to wait for their memoirs and autobiographies for their honest thoughts and experiences of these things in their lives.
Whatever it is, I still stand with them.
But for me, being queer, having experienced bullying, homophobic violence and knowing the grave danger queer people face in certain unwelcoming spaces I wish people would understand just how terrified I am for them right now. And it's not just for them, but for every single queer individual that has to mandatorily serve. The stories that come out of there is brutal.
This is the most stressful moment of my life in this Fandom. And I think some of us are rightfully concerned for their safety- as any one who thinks they are queer should. Hopefully, nothing happens to them. At worst, they get outed for being queer and get prosecuted for having gay sex while in the military.
And what these dummies don't understand is- its immaterial whether they think Jikook are a couple or not. What is at stake here is, even if they should individually have sex with their "boyfriends" off duty off base- they will still be prosecuted for having gay sex while serving.
So yes, even if you think Jikook are not a couple- if you believe they or anyone in BTS is queer at all- you should be very much concerned for their safety and human rights regardless.
If they are queer, them enlisting will not make them straight and is certainly not evidence of they are straight because there are gay men, Trans and non-binary individuals in the south Korean military. Enlisting into the military is not some magical test of straighthood. All that enlistment means is enhanced risks for the queer individuals who actually enlist- but no, of course that's not what people are concerned about.
Like I said in an earlier post, I haven't come across any gay law/ regulations that prohibit queer couples from enlisting together or at all. If there is then Jikook would be violating those laws as closeted gay men which only put them in graver danger.
If such a law exists at all its cruel, draconian, machiavellian, and outright discriminatory and I don't know why people would use that as plot device in fan/ship warfares. It's downright stupid and insensitive, and oppressive against LGBTQIA's.
In times like this I think we can appreciate the privilege of silence, of being closeted, of being straight passing- because it becomes easy to move through a world that caters for straight people and is designed for them.
Not gonna lie, I find the minimalizing and trivializing of the risks Jikook face IF THEY ARE INDEED QUEER, insensitive and disgusting.
Because I'm sure parents siblings and friends of actual queer men- shit their pants, pour ash on their heads and quiver at the knee at the thought of their gay relations going into the military.
Some of you will never know how it feels and to that I say, it's not fair😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
The fact I even have to explain the reason for the fear anxiety and worry makes me sick in the stomach 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I don't hate straight people but also I do😭
Hate you all 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hi Roski! I have a question, would you mind to help, please?
Okay, so the other when I was wandering through the shelves of my local library I found our that they have a copy of Madeline's Miller Circe... And I was thinking that maybe I should give it a try? 😅
I know that it's not mythology accurate but as long as the plotline is well-written... Idk maybe I will enjoy in spite of it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Do you is it a good idea?
I just wanted to know if you believe is worth the time or nor
Also, same goes for Achilles's song. They don't have it at the library, but I thought that if I enjoyed Circe I should try it to? 🤔
girl.... i used to be a HUGE madelline miller fan *vaguely gestures at her short story about galatea i still have in my bookshelf for some reason* but, um. i realized she kind of. sucks.
it's not about her writing, (it's excessively "poetic" and decorated in my opinion but that's subjective) it's that her interpretations are kind of, uh, bad.
SRSLY I HAVE A LOT OF BEEF WITH HER... I'M GONNA ELABORATE UNDER THE CUT ABOUT WHY I DON'T LIKE HER (tw for potential madelline miller hate, long rant and *mentions of s/a*)
-she victimizes her female main character and makes her go through traumatic experiences to erase and excuse all the bad stuff she's done... "circe turned odysseus' men into pigs bc they tried to assault her" yeah. no. she forced odysseus to sleep with her and turned his men into pigs because she felt like it. i understand you want a feminist badass witch but just. no. she isn't a cute uwu unfairly exiled goddess. what she did to odysseus is sexual abuse.
-she apparently hates women that aren't circe. made thetis, i repeat, our thetis, MOTHER thetis, a homophobic and overprotective mom who wants to kill patroclus in SOA for some reason (wasn't she literally the one who sent patroclus to the war with achilles..... miller..aren't you a classics major..). she did to her what other adaptations do to demeter, basically. and for no reason at all. but i guess her cute baby achilles who is doomed by the narrative can't have a nice mom who let him do whatever he wanted to because that would make him RUDE and EVIL and her character(s) can't have bad qualities. she also made achilles's wife, deidameia, who in some versions is raped by him, a “slut that gets in the way of your gay ship” archetype. she also made her rape achilles for some reason??? and that is fucking horrible man like wtf.
-baby-fied patroclus. he speaks like a stupid teenager girl stereotype in soa and is pretty much a useless human being whose entire personality is simping for achilles. that is not him. he DID fight in the trojan war, he was a SKILLED fighter, not a useless twig, he is described as tall and handsome, he healed some warriors, he is SAVAGE, bro literally broke kebriones's head with a rock in front of his brother and made fun of it??? he tried to climb the walls of troy and conquer it by himself??? he told achilles to stop being a bitch and move his ass??? and then in soa he's a useless piece of shit who DIDN'T EVEN FIGHT IN THE WAR, thinks of himself as weak and was thinking about achilles until the moment he died. sorry to break it to you but his last words in the iliad weren't "omg achilles no😥😥". he threw a whole essay at hector about how he didn't kill shit, it was apollo who beat him and hector's about to get dragged. and when his ghost came back to talk to achilles, it was to tell him to STOP CRYING and KILLING PEOPLE and BURN HIS BODY ALREADY. she completely erased his character. sorry.
-glorified achilles wayyy too much. one thing that i hate about her is how she can't let anyone make mistakes. girl, achilles isn't “noble and doomed by the narrative”. he knew pretty well where he was stepping in and didn't give two shits. he literally says in Iliad book 1 he's there for the mass murder, glory and nothing more. “why would i kill hector what has hector ever done to me” MY ASS. he also was kind of an insufferable bitch in the iliad. i'm tired of people making his decision of stop fighting look “heroic/noble/tragic/etc bc agamemnon is evil” because it was not. he stopped fighting for selfish reasons, treated everyone really bad and let his friends die. also, agamemnon isn't “evil” and achilles isn't “good”. they're both war criminals who act like 8 year olds and kidnap women. every achaean character is a bitch, has killed at least 6 people and enjoyed it. yes. even babyboy patroclus (book 16)
-i'm not even saying this as a person with greek ancestry or a pagan, because i am neither, but her depiction of the gods is TERRIBLE. just what is that whole thing of "gods want mortals to fear them so they worship them"??? that's not even how religion works??? gods can be and in fact are very nice to their worshippers?? why would you villainize cultural figures like that?? and why tf it always gotta be a EVIL FEMALE GODDESS trying to fuck up her main character's life for some reason?? athena wants to kill circe's son in circe and i'm pretty sure they don't even interact in the odyssey?? (maybe they did, i don't remember, but if it happened it was definitely NOT because of that) and why is hermes a manipulator?? and why is ODYSSEUS a manipulator??? girl you literally sexually assaulted him??? HELLO????
idk, it just feels like mc victimization and random female character villainization (she also put the whole blame of the trojan war on helen because she was “vain” and “selfish”??? didn't she spend the whole iliad blaming herself for the war and wishing to die??)
i don't really like it. it's not a good adaptation
also i'm not the best person to expand on this topic because i am not a gay man/mlm/nblm but some people on tumblr have explained why tsoa is basically mlm fetish and wattpad fujoshi looking crap and they do have a point (the relationship is so stereotyped tbh) so i encourage you to read their posts. i don't have them rn but i can dm them to you later if you want
AND finally, most people in her fanbase can't separate a wattpad fanfic (because that's what tsoa is) from the original text and think tsoa and circe are just like what homer wrote. “hector didn't know it was patroclus” HE FUCKING DID PATROCLUS KILLED 20 PEOPLE IN FRONT OF HIM IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE “patroclus died bc he wasn't a skilled warrior” HE HAS THE SECOND HIGHEST KILL COUNT IN THE WHOLE ILIAD AND WAS FULL OF HUBRIS. HE DIED BECAUSE HE TRIED TO FISTFIGHT A GOD “deidameia raped achilles” “thetis is homophobic” “odysseus is evil” “it was all helen's fault” “circe did nothing wrong” “athena is bad” no (and they act like not shipping patrochilles makes you homophobic which is. cmon. i personally think they def had something going on but it's never explicitly stated and you can't act like it is)
ik i got too aggressive but it's just bad imo, if you want to enjoy a good iliad/odyssey adaptation go play hades or listen to epic the musical or even play limbus company because i swear lc's odysseus, a literal old woman who committed identity fraud, is at least 80 times more in character than miller's babyboys
ADDITION: no i'm not going to dismember you for liking tsoa or circe. this is just a personal opinion. enjoy whatever you want i'm just a little guy and i can't stop you. have fun!

I think it's important to remember that homophobia and trasnphobia are just as shitty as heterophobia is shitty.
I have been a supporter of queer people for years and I will continue to be, but I often witness that queer people sometimes insult heteros from below. "Hah you are cis what do you understand" "ughh why are these stra8ts like this 😩" And when you tell them that they is making hate speech about it, they say that you are emotional or that they is playing the victim because you are hetero. But they do the opposite. They accuse you of homopfobi in everything, even in the most irrelevant issues. Especially this happens a lot in fandoms. If you ship a character with a woman, they put you in a ridiculous situation by attributing you with strange things, and they call you homophobic again from the bottom and call you "cis", that vile word again. I hate that word so much that I heard it was a term for pedophilia that a professor used to use in the past.
This kind of propaganda and toxicity has increased so much that I realized that now they want superiority rather than equality and awareness. And I think it's not just hetero people, but some queer people are also being discredited. An acquaintance of mine told me that her gay friend had thrown away the flag of honor in his home because of these toxicities, and that he no longer participated in activities, that he was now neutral on these issues and wanted to stay away.
There are two kinds of queers. One is wrong and one is normal. The unjust ones are the twitter addicts who insult and insult people. You have no right to call us cis (pedophile) just because of our biological sex or orientation. If we respect your choices and orientations, you have to do the same without discrimination.
If you think that because you are an LGBT person you have the right to insult someone's choices and sexuality, and that you are superior, you are wrong. We are all equal and human here.
I want to talk about fandom again. You've seen that a male character who is usually approved as straight and has a romantic relationship, you've seen him ship as gay in fandom and nobody says anything about it. But if you ship a gueer character with a woman, most people label you as homophobic.
I see this happening with Levi too. Even if he's not in a romantic relationship and his sexuality is not approved, if some people see him as queer, that's fine, but they bully people who see him as straight. That's why most people who send Levi with a woman are afraid to call him straight and they pan, bi, ace, him in their Hc.
Finally, do not insult anyone because of their sexual orientation. This includes heteros.
Boo-fucking-hoo. Sit down. I'm also hetero. There is nothing inherently wrong with being straight, and I never implied being straight is wrong, nor have I explicitly said that.
If you actually think that the prefix 'cis' is an insult, slur or a synonym to 'pedophile', I'm going to need you to back off, log out, and go outside. I don't know why you're trying to tell me, a cisgender woman, why being called 'cis' is apparently the worst thing to be called. I can think of far worse things to be called than a Latin prefix that has existed for centuries and has been traditionally used in a scientific context.
I don't get why you're also talking down to me about the whole dilemma of toxic mlm fans falsely accusing fans of straight ships to be homophobic. Don't patronise and lecture me about the harassment that I, as someone who writes Levi x fem!Reader, have faced. I fucking know. I've talked about this problem multiple times. I get it. But being harassed by toxic Eruri trolls is not, and never will be, an excuse to assume that there is 'propaganda' and that cishet people in fandom are being oppressed by LGBTQ+ people in fandom. Of course it's shitty to automatically assume that everyone who ships a straight ship is homophobic. I never said otherwise. If someone is falsely being accused of homophobia, yeah, that fucking sucks, because nobody in their right mind would want to be called this. But in Juri's particular case, she openly and proudly admitted to being a homophobe, and then cried and said that everyone 'calling her names' was a heterophobe. That's pathetic. Especially because heterophobia doesn't threaten the lives and rights of straight people in the way that homophobia threatens the lives and rights of LGBTQ+ people.
And have you considered that those who headcanon Levi as pan/bi/ace/etc do so because... they actually see the potential of this headcanon and enjoy viewing him that way, or ship him with multiple people of different genders? It's almost as if other sexualities outside of gay and straight exist but they are constantly erased and invalidated constantly, and it's almost as if people can have different headcanons and can multiship. Shocker, I know, I'll give you a moment to process that. It's just really gross of you to say that the only reason that some people hc Levi as bi/pan/ace is because they're scared of being called homophobic. Do you even hear yourself? Your claim isn't even remotely true.
I also think it's really insidious of you to say that LGBTQ+ people can be divided into 'normal' and 'wrong'. This a very slippery slope of thinking. Ask yourself this. Do you really think that members of a minority or margnalised community has to fit a particular set of standards, set by the majority/privileged class, to deserve acknowledgement, acceptance and basic respect?
This sounds a lot like the way some white people talk about East Asians being a model minority in the West - which is a myth, by the way. "Why can't all of you POC/BAME be like the East Asians? They aren't loudly protesting in the streets for their rights, they aren't making a fuss or making ridiculous demands, they don't ask for anything, they put their head down and work hard. See? Look how studious these Asian kids are! Look how much these Asian people are earning! Look, non-white folk can do well in a predominantly white society, if they work hard enough! East Asians can get over their past history of oppression, why can't you? Society is equal and there are no problems, the rest of you are just lazy and aren't working hard enough! You don't care about equality, you want POC/BAME supremacy! There is equality, the system is fine, and the success of these East Asians are proof! Be more like them, be grateful with what you have and pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get to it!"
That's a fucked up thing to say, isn't it? Implying that there can only be one right way of being a minority and dismissing other ways. This is harmful to all POC. It's harmful to the East Asians being held up to a ridiculous false standard and being lumped together as a monolith, and ignores that they are not immune to racism. It's harmful to other POC who are being told that they're lazy, complain too much, just need to 'get over it' and work harder and be thankful that they have rights at all, etc, when they have so many barriers in place and the system puts them at a disadvantage.
To me, this is how you sound when you say that. Listen, I know every community has its bad apples, including the LGBTQ+ community, but that does not give you the right to say that there can only be one right, 'normal' way of being a minority and that everybody else is spreading 'propoganda' of 'LGBTQ+ supremacy' and is out to get all straights. Once again, heterophobia is not a systemic issue.
Don't send stupid shit like this to me again. The least you could do is to not hide behind anonymous, if you're going to send me a condescending essay in my ask box and make me waste my time reading and answering it.

Choosing to not educate yourself and not watch OG content is a choice. Choosing to hate someone cause someone else does, is a choice. Choosing to ignore Tae telling you to get out of your imagination, is a choice. Choosing to ignore JK telling you things was awkward, is a choice. Choosing to turn a blind eye to all the red flags from your ship for years, is a choice. Choosing to ignore what JK has done with JM for years, is a choice. Choosing to sit in GC's and DM's hating on JM & going along with nasty, vile, filthy, inhumane, homophobic, degrading, defaming comments, is a choice. Choosing to blindly believe others, is a choice. Choosing to be a disgusting human being, is a choice. I was lied too, manipulated, I'm young, I was vulnerable, I was lost, I was brainwashed, this is all excuses & it doesn't excuse you for being horrible people. If you see the light, it still doesn't erase the damage done. To Jimin's reputation or to his soul. You think JM hasn't sat and probably cried to himself or to JK or the other members about how targeted and bullied he is, esp when he gives his all to this fandom? You think JM doesn't see that he has been called a predator and assaulter for years & its changed how he reacts with JK or even the other members? TKK are the #1 drivers of this hate campaign against JM and they are still doing it today. Look at Vkookdaughter, making threads all week, still including JM in her delusions with 1000's of miserable Tkk hyping up her lies and trashing JM. It doesn't matter if 100 TKK leave. There will be a 100 more ready to pick up where it was left off and continue the lies and delusions and hate against JM. They are not Army. They are not here for BTS. They are here for two men, well one actually, cause they also hate JK, he's just used a ship tool. Taekook is not real, never has been real, never will be real. I'm sorry, but no amount of apologizing will ever erase how they treated JM and for that, they can all burn in hell. It doesn't cost a thing to be a good human & I haven't met a decent TKK since I've been here.
A decent tkkr?
Tumblr media
I'm yet to meet one. Not even one. If in order to be a tkkr u have to hate Jimin we ain't never gonna find one. Ever.
I agreed with everything u said. Except for the part about Jimin changing how he behaves with JK and members because of the hate. I don't think that's the case at all. He's changed how he behaves with members but I think that's more to do with Jikook than fake Army.
But yes to everything else 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I will not tolerate any interaction with any of you. I hate you and want you very far from me /srs
This also aply for neutral/"anti-anti" people. I don't care what excuses u use, being tolerable and apologist for all this stuff is not okay and just as wrong as them. Stay away.

On a lighter note, I don't have anything against NSFW artists who do safe, sane stuff with adult characters. Y'all are cool.

Would unironically love to see a writeup about the anti-rpf movement and how it connects to ableism. Homophobia I can kind of see, people seem to take way more issue with m/m rpf than of f/m from what i've seen, especially in classic rock. But ableism? (Genuine curiosity btw! )
-a curious rpf lover
so i normally don't get into shipcourse, but this is something I actually feel passionate about. RPF writers and readers are attacked for a lot of reasons, some of them fair and a matter of personal opinion, a lot of them very obviously bigoted. (also I will be reblogging this on my discourse blog @political-faggotry, if you want to send me asks in response to this post send them there!)
People take way more issue with m/m and f/f RPF than m/f RPF, as you said. This is because fanfiction and other forms of "shitty literature" have always been associated with queer people. This has been the case since at least the 1960s, when queer authors were forced to write shitty tragic stories that can't really be classified as love stories in order to have their stories told at all. A lot of queer-coded media was like this too, and cishet people caught on.
My informed opinion is that modern-day RPF was created because of an intersection of neurodivergence and queerness. Basically, ND queer people who felt out of place in society came together and formed fandoms around bands, actors, celebs, etc. Due to the increasing popularity of fanfiction in the 2000s, it was only natural that this would eventually bleed into fandoms of bands.
I think that the reason that M/M RPF fic was/is so popular is because of the trans eggs in fandom that 1) liked to project onto male characters and 2) viewed women as competition. Back when I was an egg, this was definitely what drew me to RPF. I did not like reading about Pete Wentz with his actual girlfriend, or with some female OC, I liked reading about him with a man I could project onto and who didn't feel like competition.
Anti-RPF "movements" during the 2000s was very obviously homophobic, misogynistic, and transphobic. Readers & writers would regularly get called homophobic slurs, get misogynist and transandrophobic comments, and otherwise be attacked for being queer and/or perceived female.
In the late 2010s was when the rise of calling things "problematic" because cringe culture died truly happened. Instead of saying "I don't like what you write because you're a faggot", people would say "actually you're problematic for writing that". It was literally the same shit we would get told in the 2000s, replacing words like "faggot" and the r-slur with "problematic".
I'm not saying that all people who call media problematic are like this - far from it. I call some media problematic too! However, media perceived as queer was targeted with accusations of being problematic far more than media without queerness attached, and many people who were already homophobic used this as an excuse to be homophobic while still being seen as "progressive".
I have an entire other rant about how non-MLM "progressives" can be and are homophobic sometimes, but I don't really have the spoons to write all that out right now - I will do it later though!
It would be misleading of me to not also talk about how TEHMs played a big part in the homophobia and transphobia that was directed at the (queer) RPF community. For those unaware, TEHM stands for Trans Exclusionary Homosexual Male. They are basically the TERF lesbians of the MLM gay community. They believe that gay trans men, especially nonbinary trans men and autistic trans men, are straight female fetishizers trying to invade the gay community.
TEHMs often come after transmasculine fans of yaoi anime, queer fanfiction, and yes, RPF. TEHMs will claim that the fact that transmasculine people tend to be in fandoms with a lot of M/M ships somehow "proves" that we are just fetishizing. So. Fucking. Many. Of the most common anti-RPF arguments use TEHM talking points, either intentionally or unintentionally.
TEHMs make use of dogwhistles to spread their messages even to people who are often trans-inclusionary. Claims of fetishizing MLM relationships are more often than not TEHM dogwhistles. A very common claim that I see among people who are VERY anti-RPF (not as in "i do not think RPF is good, but i don't really care all that much", but more as in "if you have ever read RPF in your life you should die") is that RPF is basically sexual assault.
Why would you accuse an entire fandom of young, queer, transmasculine people of sexually assaulting people who are usually 20+ years older than them? This is TEHM rhetoric.
I also want to touch on the ableism a little. Many RPF writers are neurodivergent, as one might expect. The majority of the ones I've interacted with are. The internet loves to get mad at neurodivergent people for having "problematic" interests, and with RPF it is no different.
We are singled out and our interests are seen as inherently disordered, immoral, etc. Those who are very strongly against RPF either do not know this, or they know this and are fine with harassing neurodivergent people over what amounts to a non-issue.
Now, that's the end of my point, but I have a few things to clarify. I am not trying to say that if you personally don't like RPF that you are actually transphobic, homophobic, and/or ableist. You are allowed to dislike anything for any reason and I don't care. My problem is with the people who hate RPF so much that they believe that reading it is a moral failing, or that it is okay to harass those that like it.
It is incredibly important to have boundaries writing RPF, which means not doing it anywhere that it is likely the people you are writing about will see. It is also okay to believe that RPF is inherently breaking a boundary; I disagree, but I see where your (not at anon) opinion is coming from and I respect it. It is not at all bigoted to dislike a thing for those reasons, as they are valid reasons to dislike something.
There is also a larger discussion to be had about the commodification of humans themselves in the music industry, but that is beyond the scope of this post.
I really only have a problem with the people who believe that it is a moral failing, or literal sexual assault, to be in a mostly harmless community that has been historically associated with queerness. That is all.
Please don't bring proship/anti discourse to this post.

I can't say how long it's been this bad with A/eons bullying and harassing people who ship anything but A/eon [I've been in and out of the fandom over the past few years, but after RE4R, I got hyperfixated on RE so I've engaged more with the fandom lately than I ever have in the past], but coming from fandoms outside of RE (where what ship is endgame doesn't matter), I feel like at least a good 95% of the bully A/eon shippers came from those outside fandoms too where canon endgame ships seem to have more bearing on that media's quality than what the relationships in RE have. For example, Stranger Things is about one of the WORST fucking places for ship wars I've ever seen because the narrative of that show puts a lot more importance on character relationships and whether or not they'll work out than Resident Evil does. People in that fandom are used to fighting for their lives in ship wars over what ship should be the canon endgame for each character because they stress the importance of relationships and community between characters in that show so much. So I feel like it's possible that some of the newer A/eon shippers could've come from fandoms like that where they think they have to fight for their life for the endgame ship, because that vibe just feels so similar between fandoms. A/eon and Cl/eon are the new Twilight love triangle it seems. But regardless, it's no excuse for them at all to bully fans who don't ship A/eon (I've seen them bully some Cl/eons off of Twitter before even and now finding any content for that ship is so scarce over there these days). And I feel like with Death Island coming up, another piece of RE media like Infinite Darkness where Leon and Claire are present in the same location together and Ada is no where in sight and hasn't been since RE6 [aside from the remakes], it feels like they're losing some false hope for A/eon being an endgame ship when Capcom isn't about the romances in RE for the most part in the first place.
This has been going on since 1998 and I'm not joking.
And you know what other huge video game fandom was in vogue in 1998? Final Fantasy VII, which has the nastiest ship war in all of video game fandom history that still goes on to this day. Old Guard Aeon fandom was forged in the fires of ship wars, and they are stuck in their ways and will never, ever change.
You might think it's bad now, but you have absolutely no idea how bad Aeon vs Cleon actually was back in the day. You literally could not engage with the fandom as a Leon fan at all without taking a side. Those were your only two options. And, for someone like me, who didn't really fucking care about either of them, it was so, so exhausting.
There was no Leshley. There was no Chreon. There was no Serrennedy. Those were not options that were available to you. In fact, Resident Evil fandom (and survival horror fandom in general lbr) was actually very homophobic for a very long time until RE5 turned Chris Redfield into a gay icon with two of his alternate costumes (1, 2), and all of the gays finally started flooding in and saving this fandom from itself.
So, pre-RE5, you were either Team Aeon or you were Team Cleon and you kept your fucking mouth shut if you liked anything else, because you would get booted the fuck out of communities on LiveJournal if you mentioned it -- and, back then? That's all there was. You didn't have tumblr AND twitter AND tiktok AND whatever the fuck else. Fandom lived on LiveJournal. Period.
And don't misunderstand me. Back in the day, Cleon fandom was just as batshit crazy as Aeon fandom is today. I feel like Cleon fandom has mostly chilled the fuck out these days because the vast majority of them have accepted by this point that they lost the war, but back in the mid aughts? Oh, dear god, they were insufferable and just as cult-like.
Degeneration poured so much gasoline on the fire that RE4 started, especially when the director of that movie, when asked why Ada wasn't in it, responded with "She cannot be in everything."
And then Darkside Chronicles happened and made it SO MUCH WORSE because Aeon fans were pissed off that Claire was Leon's co-op partner for the RE2 campaign, and then Cleon fans were pissed off because the Leon/Ada kiss happened, and I just.
Seriously thank god for every single person who started playing these games solely because they wanted to take Chris to pound town. They are the real, true heroes of this fandom, and I am so, so, so, so grateful for them.
And, idk, maybe that's a huge part of the reason why Aeon fandom is still feeling so insecure -- because there was a fairly significant amount of time when it was possible that Capcom was going to tip the scales in favor of Cleon. Damnation and RE6 finally squashed that notion, and the ending of Infinite Darkness coup-de-grace'd it, but it was a real thing for many years.
And now with Leon/Ashley now also being a canon ship of sorts... all that shit is probably bubbling right back up to the surface. Because now, Aeon isn't The Only Canon Ship in Resident Evil anymore. Hell, Aeon isn't even the only canon ship for Leon anymore.
And after taking eighteen years of abuse and shaming and knowing just how nasty RE fandom can get, Leon/Ashley fandom better stay the fuck humble. I swear to god. Y'all motherfuckers just keep your fucking heads down and nod politely and say "Thank you, Mr. Capcom, for this wonderful gift." because no one in a million fucking years would have ever thought that we'd be the ones to become Leon's secondary canon ship.
And this next part isn't directed at you specifically, anon, but at all of my followers and especially the ones who've been contributing to the discussion tonight:
DO NOT fight with Aeon fandom, because I DO NOT want to see us become them -- or even become the second coming of Old Guard Cleon Fandom. Block them and let it go. I mean it.
