OS2xBBS: My Overall Thoughts
This is severely overdue, but I wanted to distance myself from these episodes to make sure that 1) regency bias didn’t seep through and 2) my thoughts don’t get clouded by the cute, swoony moments (all the kissing!) in an attempt to mask deeper plot and characterization issues, and 3) with some difficulty, I try to set aside how desperately I wanted OhmNanon’s reunion with PatPran to live up to the OG series.
So, to address the last item, for the most part OhmNanon’s chemistry was still alive and well, save for a few hiccups. This is a testament to two very experienced professionals. That said, my biggest gripe with these special episodes was the treatment of the Pat and Pran characters that has nothing to do with the actors.
It didn’t feel like a true crossover of two beloved series but instead felt like Pat and Pran’s presence were more like afterthoughts thrown into an ATOTS script. Pat and Pran were merely there to serve Phupha and Tian’s story and that is were I take great issue. In this case, Ohm and Nanon should not have been billed as main leads but rather supporting characters that have extended guest arcs in an ATOTS sequel.
Maybe setting plays a larger role here. I’ve asked myself if I would feel this way if Phupha and Tian got thrown into Pat and Pran’s university life instead. But I can’t imagine a storyline where the inverse of what we got makes sense since PatPran are the more established couple and PhuTian have no reason to leave PPD.
My wish was that instead of a crossover, P’Aof would have let BBS stand on its own even if it meant we got two fewer episodes out of it. While we did get glimpses of Pat and Pran’s life three-years into their relationship, it felt watered down because they weren’t in their own environment but a borrowed one. So, really, more like seeing them while on vacation than anything truly concrete. A lot of ‘what have Pat and Pran been up to and where are they in their relationship’ was left to viewer interpretation, which is all fine and well if what P’Aof had to say about the state of their relationship made any sense.
Fake fighting and cute hijinks aside (Ohm and Nanon can sell these type of scenes in their sleep); what I’m after is the meatier stuff like the end of EP4, the entirety of EP5, EP10, EP11 and EP12. Where is the Pran that got choked up when Pat revealed he ran after him with his guitar; who gripped his hand when Pat volunteered to fake break up to win back Pran’s friends and wordlessly said I’m here to stay. Where is the “but I care about you more” Pran?
And where is the Pat who communicated so openly with his man? Who served as a walking advertisement of what it means to be a soaring green flag to all those who came before and after him? Why was he reduced to an amalgamation of Harry and Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber? Make it make sense, P’Aof. Pat never, ever, not once, came off as a dumb himbo in the OG series, so why was he reduced to that here?
The script could have been so much better, tighter, just more substantial. And we can't even say that P'Aof didn't have the space to include a meaningful story for them; I call bullshit on this notion. There's so much story that you can tell in a single hour. We've seen him do it with the BBS pilot.
It felt like so very little thought went into the BBS side of the story. Does P’Aof not know how to write established relationships in a compelling way? I know this can't be true because he gave us EP12, but why did it feel like he phoned it in with these bonus episodes? It’s like P’Aof knew he had both boys for a limited time and just threw the entire kitchen sink at them and anything that stuck made it into the final cut. Like, he relied heavily on the actors to bring it home for him. And that really wasn't fair to Ohm or Nanon who really did the best they could with what they were given.
I mean, even if he wanted to show the (realistic) cracks in their relationship, there were so many better ways to show this than have Pran essentially running away, avoiding Pat (basically regressing to who he was pre-relationship) and then treating Pat like a bumbling Barney Fife for following him? There was no fire in either of them to fight for or with one another. They were shown to have grown complacent (and dare I say taking each other for granted?) which is so at odds with what we got in the OG series that I was confused at what I was watching onscreen. It did not feel like a continuation of EP11 leading to EP12, in fact it felt very disconnected from their origin story.
Pat Jindapat. What they did to my guy was a travesty. They took away all his depth and cast him in the role of a bumbling idiot. Don't get me wrong, OG Pat had his comedic moments but I felt like OS2 veered so far into the extreme of 'lets bring the funny' that it fell completely flat. It was NOT funny. It was disappointing and sad to see one of my favorite characters reduced to this cartoon version.
More than senselessly reducing Pat to cannon fodder to merely serve as comic relief, I'm upset that Pran's growth from the series was essentially negated to where he became, in some ways, unrecognizable. More than once, it felt like Pran was just tolerating Pat's presence rather than basking or gravitating towards it. Again, so inconsistent for a guy who longed for his man for literal YEARS.
Gone are the days of "I'm done adapting" or adoringly staring at the space Pat used to occupy with heart eyes. I just don't get how we went from that Pran to this Pran to the Pran who readily committed his life to Pat in EP12. This in-between Pran is a stranger to me.
Final words: I'm both grateful that we got extra scenes with our boys but at the same time wish P'Aof had left them untainted.

"Bill & Ted Face the Music" was one of my favorite movies that I saw during lockdown. I saw many better films too, but there was something about the eternal optimism and good nature of William S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves) that made them feel like the kind of heroes we needed during a pandemic, one of the weirdest and most uncertain situations many of us have ever experienced.
Stuck at home for far longer than natural, it was comforting to hang out with old screen pals in lieu of our real-life friends. This may be why the era of COVID-19 also saw the unlikely phenomenon of people binge-watching old episodes of "Columbo." Perhaps there isn't too much difference between Bill and Ted and Peter Falk's shambling detective. The movies and the show are set in sunny California; the stakes are low; and the protagonists are unassuming, friendly, and most importantly of all, kind.
Aside from the cozy factor, the third installment of the "Bill & Ted" franchise also came as a surprise because it wasn't sh**e. Released almost 30 years after "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey," it was remarkably consistent in tone and spirit to the original movies, obviously a labor of love for everyone involved. Unlike the embarrassing spectacle of watching Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in their mid-50s reprising their roles as Lloyd and Harry in "Dumb and Dumber To," Winter and Reeves slipped back into their old characters with ease, making it seem totally believable that these were the same dudes who once rocked out in their garage as Wyld Stallyns and dreamed of jamming with Eddie Van Halen. If only they could have persuaded the legendary guitar hero to appear in the movie...
EDDIE VAN HALEN'S INFLUENCE ON BILL & TED
A few years before everyone was rocking out to "Bohemian Rhapsody" in their cars and shouting things like "Schwing!" and "Party on!" you had the air guitar from "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure." Unlike the ironic knowingness of "Wayne's World," there was an innocent exuberance to the gesture, which Bill and Ted used as an expression of happiness, agreement, or triumph.
While Bill and Ted may have been the ones who helped spread the air guitar into popular culture beyond rock music, they were by no means the inventors. The history of the air guitar can be traced as far back as the 1860s when pretending to play an invisible instrument was regarded as a sign of mental illness, while Joe Cocker miming the opening notes of a tune onstage at Woodstock in 1969 is regarded as the "formative moment" of the gesture.
Skip forward another 20 years and the boys' use of the air guitar is clearly inspired by their taste in music. As Southern Californian lads growing up in the '80s, we're talking AC/DC, ZZ Top, Kiss, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Frank Zappa, and, of course, Van Halen. Alex Winter explained (via Rolling Stone):
"The image that Eddie had runs through all of our movies. Bill and Ted are supposed to be into hard rock. But were these sunny, optimistic California guys. And that's really embodied by Eddie Van Halen. We talk about Iron Maiden a lot, but I think we would have come up listening to Van Halen and the positivity that was infused in the music. [...] And I always thought of Eddie's incredible physicality with the air guitar stuff, and just the way these guys would have seen him and how that would have impacted them."
EDDIE VAN HALEN WAS APPROACHED FOR ALL THREE BILL & TED MOVIES
It's always a thing of pure joy watching a musician with absolute mastery of their instrument, both fully in command while also completely surrendering themselves to it. If you watch a video of Eddie Van Halen performing his epic solo of "Eruption," you'll see the motion that Bill and Ted mimic so often in the movies: Yanking the fret skywards, fingers flying along the fret as if wrangling a powerful beast, perhaps a Wyld Stallyn. Yet for all his virtuosity, Eddie Van Halen was a modest, laidback character in contrast to David Lee Roth, the extroverted, pouting, poodle-permed frontman of the band.
Van Halen was so important to the vibe of the "Bill & Ted" trilogy that attempts were made to cast him in all three films, most notably as Rufus, the duo's time-traveling guide. Unfortunately, the sleeper hit original didn't have the budget for a rock star of Van Halen's status at the time. Alex Winter remembered (via Rolling Stone):
"We tried to get Van Halen into each one of the movies. [Laughs]. We asked him, but he said no. A very 'Spinal Tap' moment. [Laughs]. He was a famously private person and he wasn't, you know, the front man. He was extremely charismatic and he was always very genteel, but he always turned us down."
After Van Halen's death in 2020, screenwriter Ed Solomon revealed that the guitarist had once again been approached to play a part in "Bill & Ted Face the Music," but his representatives turned them down without revealing why. Solomon surmised that Van Halen's battle with throat cancer may have been the reason. It is sad that Bill and Ted never got to play alongside their hero; but with Van Halen's influence on the three movies, they still pay a fitting tribute to the legend.

Dumb and Dumber 3 Is Happening, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels Returning
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are confirmed to return as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne for Dumb and Dumber 3 Is Happening, continuing the story from 2014's Dumb and Dumber To. Despite mixed reviews, the sequel was financially successful, paving the way for another installment in the iconic comedy franchise.

Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (634): Mon 11th Dec 2023
Re-watched the classic comedy Dumb and Dumber tonight. I saw Jeff Daniels interviewed about the movie once where he said the reason Jim Carrey insisted on having him play Harry in the movie is because he wanted someone who was going to help him flesh out the jokes rather than just try to top his. I can totally see what he means because if there had been another comic opposite Carrey then they would have just tried to out-Carrey him, namely by trying to be as over the top and wacky as he is which I think would've got annoying after a while. The best example is where Harry is reacting with horror upon finding out that Lloyd sold his dead bird to a blind kid. I think another comic would have reacted by saying what sick thing THEY did to raise money that was worse than what Lloyd did but Daniels just goes with it by acting completely flummoxed and it makes the reveal of the dead bird with it's head taped back on even funnier. One aspect of the movie that I think is overlooked is the soundtrack, not only the screwball comedy style track that accompanies the more comedic scenes like Lloyd running through the airport or the more sinister track whenever the hitmen are featured but also the actual songs by bands. Crash by the Primitives, Where I Find My Heaven by Gigolo Aunts, and Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison, man the Farrelly's have great taste in music. Finally something I never noticed before is that Harry and Lloyd's falling out in the middle of the movie lasts less than a minute. It's like the Farrelly's knew that in every movie there has to be a part where the two leads have a falling out that often drags on so this is their way of getting it over with which was great. I don't know if I would call this my favourite movie of all time but it's certainly my favourite comedy and if I had one of those memory erasing gadgets from Men in Black I would erase the memories I have of Dumb and Dumber every night and in the morning there would be a note saying "Watch me" lying on top of the DVD so that I could have the thrill of watching this perfect comedy for the first time every single day.

Jim Carrey Once Pitched A Dumb & Dumber Found-Footage Horror Movie
Jim Carrey Once Pitched A Dumb & Dumber Found-Footage Horror Movie
Jim Carrey wanted to make a found-footage horror movie on the set of Dumb and Dumber To. One of Carrey’s many iconic comedies from the 1990s, Dumb and Dumber stars him and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two dimwitted yet well-intentioned pals who embark on a cross-country road trip to return a suitcase full of money to its rightful owner, not realizing it was actually left…

Which actor played Harry Dunne in the 1995 film 'Dumb and Dumber'?
Tumblr media
'Dumb and Dumber' is a 1994 American comedy film about two dim-witted men from Providence, Rhode Island, who are both roommates and best friends. The two friends, Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey), set off on a long journey to Aspen, Colorado, to return a briefcase to its owner, not realising it was full of ransom money.
The film received very good reviews and was a box office success. Nearly ten years later, a prequel called 'Dumb and Dumberer' (2003) was released, followed by a sequel called 'Dumb and Dumber To' in 2014. Although 'Dumb and Dumber' did not win any major American film awards, readers of 'Total Film' magazine voted it the fifth greatest comedy film of all time in a poll conducted in 2000.
Nicolas Cage was the original choice for the role of Harry Dunne, but after he tried to negotiate a $2 million increase in his fee, the producers dropped him and signed Jeff Daniels instead. Born in 1955, Daniels had starred in a handful of minor films before starring in 'Dumb and Dumber', which was his first great success. He has since starred in several notable films, including '101 Dalmatians' (1996) and 'Steve Jobs' (2015), and television series such as 'The Newsroom' (2012-2014) and 'Godless' (2017).
In 2020, Daniels endorsed Joe Biden in the presidential election. He narrated a campaign ad for Biden titled 'America Needs Michigan'.

Best New Heavy Metal Releases Week of May 27th, 2022
Got a bit overloaded this week. There was a LOT of new releases this week and if you add some releases from previous weeks that I could finally find streams of, it was more than I could actually get through. I stopped this week after 127 albums and still had about 40 to go. If I didn’t stop when I did, this blog post would have been late and the key to doing anything like this is consistency. The albums I did not get to from last week will just bleed over into next weeks.
Being overloaded was not just the amount of new releases, but also the amount of fantastic new releases. If there are a lot of albums with terrible production or terrible vocals, I can just listen to about 10 minutes and then move on. There weren’t a lot of those this week so there were a lot of albums that got full listens even if they ultimately did not make the cut for the list. Add to all of this that there were more than a few that could have gotten the 2 star designation as best of the week regardless of genre and things got way past my normal cutoff time of early Sunday evening. Sounds a bit like I am whining but in all reality I view all of this as an excellent thing. It shows how strong the Heavy Metal scene is which will always put a smile on my face. I once again will not do a full write up on each of the 2 star albums to avoid this from becoming a wall of text, but if the album has 2 stars, it is DEFINITELY one of the best releases of the week. So let’s get to it.
Madvice-Under the Burning Sky (Melodic Death)**
Really catchy Melodic Death Metal out of Italy. I love how they incorporate moments of groove in the riffing that you normally find in Thrash Metal bands with the more polished sound. Adds that extra dimension that makes this stand out from the pack.
Iatt-Magnum Opus (Melodic Death/Black)**
This is labeled as Melodic Death/Black but I could also add Avant Garde, Progressive, Technical, and even Jazz and Classical as descriptors. This album is all over the place and yet it works incredibly well at mixing all of these parts together that REALLY should not work and yet it does. I had to look up who the drummer is on this and it is a guy named Paul Cole. Never heard of him before as the band itself is new to me, but wow, just wow! I could go on and on gushing about his work on the kit, but let’s just say this is an absolute master class of drumming. Cheers, Paul! Excellent work!
Lord Belial-Rapture (Black)**
Lord Belial has been around since the 1990s and if you enjoy violent yet still melodic Black Metal played at a VERY high level, this is the band for you. To me, this one is possibly the best of their career. Lots of variety in the songwriting that does a great job of breaking up the album and keep it from sounding like a wall of sound. Something that earlier in their career was a bit of a problem. Fantastic production on this one as well.
Desert Near the End-The Dawning of the Son (Melodic Death/Power)**
Melodic Death Metal with moments of Power Metal? In any case, it’s what it sounds like to me. I guess you could say it is a lighter form of Melodic Death or Power Metal with harsher vocals but it doesn’t really come across that way. There are parts that are straight up Power Metal riffing and vocals that sound like Hansi from Blind Guardian with a cold. Whatever it is, the result is an absolutely fantastic album.
Decapitated-Cancer Culture (Death/Progressive)**
Another band with a rich history. I have to admit I wasnt a big fan of their last album in 2017 so I went into this one with a bit of trepidation. Well, after the first listen, I was like Harry talking to Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber. Decapitated has TOTALLY REDEEMED THEMSELVES. This album is great all the way through. Riffs for days, drumming that you feel in your chest, shredding guitar solos, and songs that are aggressive but with just enough melody to keep them from feeling kind of “samey”. Great guest vocals from Jinjer and Machine head don’t hurt either. Fantastic album and one that is currently on the way to me on vinyl.
Qvintessence-Qvintessence (Hard Rock)**
There have been quite a few Hard Rock albums that have caught my attention over the last month or so and here is yet another one. Just like last week and Crossbones’ Creed, this is catchy as hell and incredibly well done. A little more aggressive than most Hard Rock but that little bit of edge is what really makes it stand out. A band from Italy that sounds like they would be right at home at the Whiskey in Los Angeles.
Now you see why I had to cut this back a little. The post is already longer than I really want it to be but hey, good music is good music and deserves to be talked about. If I would have done writeups on the other bands that were deserving (Obscene, Ribspreader, Urkraft, Bloodhunter, Elusive God and Tempest) this post would have easily been the longest one I have ever done. Don’t let those pass you by just because I didn’t write about them. To more than a few people, those could very well be their album of the year.
Until next week and, as always,
