As a fan of six of crows for years and years who rereads them regularly it really makes me sad to see what they did with shadow and bone. I have not read Bardugo's other works nor do I plan to, I've long accepted that it is this particular batch of characters and plot that struck a chord with me. (be warned this is a bit of a rant)

Going into shadow and bone I was tentatively optimistic because the casting choices were fucking superb- every single actor is not only a great visual of the character (save for nina but fatphobia do be real), but you can see how much they're trying to bring this character to life. And watching the show for the first time, I thought that this might be able to work, that they could include Kaz, Inej, and Jesper into the first trilogy's story and have it still read coherent into a hopeful SoC adaptation. Only no they decided to compress all 4 books into 1 show and both stories are suffering for it.

SoC is by far the more popular of the two series, understandably so, but watching Shadow and Bone steal its chapter titles for episode titles without ever planning to adapt the *actual* scene where "every heart is an arrow" comes from is fucking criminal. And it suggests to me that Shadow and Bone was expected to not even stand without filching from SoC, as if that story doesn't have its own merits. Instead they have to borrow from its sequel to get people invested. In the first season I was also put off by what they did with Inej and Nina/Matthias specifically. I didn't like that they made it so she's still under contract with the menajerie (bc literally it makes no sense if she was still owned by them why the fuck is she out romping with kaz she would still be IN there). I also didn't like that they tied up her killing for the first time with Kaz- its awfully romantic blah blah blah- but hear me out: SoC was amazing in that Inej and Kaz were well rounded characters with meaningful arc not related to their romance. This includes Inej's moral confliction with her lifestyle amd her choice to become a murderer as part of the crows. While Kaz is of course tied up in it as the person who freed her, her choice to kill is not only about protecting him. Nina and Matthias I dislike because 1) their inclusion makes no fucking sense in the timeline, 2) feels rushed as all hell , and 3) tones down their first meeting *significantly* to make it more palatable. Which in all fairness would have likely happened regardless of adaptation but it still makes me sad. Yes I understand that fans have issues with their relationship but I think it was handled with astonishing maturity in the book to sell you on it.

I haven't watched season 2 nor do I plan to ever because I know that I will only find more problems with it (they fact that there was apparently a Jesper/Wylan romance is making me grind my teeth because literally why are you not only adapting SoC crows if you want its characters that badly). I shall have to make do with watching little clips of them because I really and truly and in love with this casting choice.
