THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED (1988)

Finally finished Part I! Here are some of my pretty unorganized thoughts.

(Spoilers ahead) (tw mention of incest)

PART I: THE ROAD TO THE VAMPIRE LESTAT

A lot going on. It was actually hard to keep going at some point, a lot of exposition and it was frankly very boring at times. The entire Baby Jenks chapter could have been skipped. The biggest thing I’ve taken away from Part I is Anne’s obsession with red hair. Anyway, here are some of the things I liked!

Truly unhinged intro from Lestat where he literally says, “hey remember me?? left you on a cliffhanger there!! also let’s switch to third person bc the story just flows better that way.”

Marius trapped under the ice where he belongs.

Pandora chapter was like a fever dream. And also damn you eat like that?? Literally ripping hearts out, but lowkey that’s such a goddess move.

Got to the famous Devil’s Minion chapter!! I was really excited for this one.

It was very sweet actually. Armand is a terror, but his intensity is what I love about him. Loved him since the iwtv book, what a character. Him finally turning Daniel, that whole scene was heartbreaking. Also what does Armand need 8 phones for? Love how they kept his love for tech in the show lol he’s always on that iPad.

Finally introduced to the Talamasca. I assumed from what I occasionally saw online that they were this like all powerful group that had like a one-up on the paranormal creatures that they investigate (or like some sort of council for anything supernatural), but I was kinda let down when finding out they are humans with just a little bit of psychic powers. But I’m pretty sure I don’t know the full story yet.

Also it’s cute that Anne starts every chapter with her husband’s poetry. Though they’re not all my cup of tea, I liked the one at the beginning of the Jesse chapter.

I like Jesse! This chapter reminded me a lot of the Mortal Instruments actually lol, both Clary and Jesse join a supernatural related order and are unknowingly related to supernatural beings (and both have red hair lol). I like that Mael makes a reappearance, he was the only part I liked about Marius’s backstory from TVL. Also, Anne Rice try writing a close familial relationship without making it weirdly incestuous challenge impossible. Maharet’s attitude towards Jesse made me wildly uncomfortable.

The part where Jesse goes to New Orleans was true horror. I was shaking in my bed sheets reading it, seriously. Claudia haunting the New Orleans townhouse, my poor baby. Hope that more of the diary gets revealed in this book.

And that’s about it!

For such a long part that’s honestly all I’ve got to say. I’m glad to finally be done with it tbh and we can finally get to the present day. I learned from Jacob’s podcast appearance that Anne did not have an editor which explains a lot lol. I fear for what is awaiting me.

Predictions: I had thought that Maharet was actually Pandora, but then read back and saw that Pandora has brown hair so I guess not. If a character has red hair Anne will let you know multiple times. Which is why I feel like Armand might be part of the Great Family. Or maybe his red hair is garden variety type, idk.

I will probably post chapter by chapter going forward! Or however I please I guess lol. Excited to start Part II: All Hallow’s Eve!!

Review:

For fans of the Clarice x Hannibal or Will x Hannibal pairing, this is the ULTIMATE book for you. I ATE THIS BOOK UP. A enemies to lovers story about a potential killer and a criminal profiler who are forced to work together to catch a ritualistic killer while dealing with their obsession and yearning for each other? This is so good. Halen is a criminal profiler/psychologist who is grieving the loss of her fiance and child, she's consumed by her cases, particularly the case of Kallum Locke, a handsome professor who is involved int he Harbinger killer case... she put him away... but now she needs his knowledge to catch a new killer. Kallum was obsessed with Halen from the moment he met her, her pain, her grief, is the muse he wants. He'll do anything for her, to be near her, to taste her, and to play the game that their dynamic has brought forth. He knows she's desperate for answers to the Harbinger killer case and that she thinks its him, but he'll bide his time and play his hand, all so he can capture her for himself. This is the first book in a series and I can't wait to start the second one!!

Lestat and David and an act of self-condemnation:

Okay, one more post about “Tale of the Body Thief” and then I’m off to start “Memnoch the Devil” later tonight.  Be still my heart, lol.

But I just wanted to talk a little bit here about why Lestat does what he does at the end of TotBT, why he turns David against his will into a vampire.

I think, obviously, Lestat wanted from the beginning of the story to make David his companion.  That’s a recurring theme throughout this book, and indeed, all the books up to this point, that Lestat keeps choosing the wrong people to serve as his companions, people who don’t really understand him or can’t relate to him, people who will eventually turn away from him, and he’s sort of obsessing over David being his companion, because he sees a great deal of himself in him.  His courage, his strength, his will, his will to action, etc...  So obviously, that desire plays a part in it.  But I don’t think it’s actually the reason Lestat does it, at the end here.  It would have been the reason he did it with David when it was Raglan James occupying his body.  I think when Lestat bit him then, it was fully because he simply, desperately wanted David to be his companion.  And I’ve already gone into the implications of that experience in my other post on these last chapters of the book, so I won’t repeat myself here.

Nor do I think it was what David accuses Lestat of later, that being a petty cruelty and meanness, wanting to take David’s happiness away because he was able to succeed in this body that Lestat “didn’t have the strength to endure”, as David puts it.

What I think it really was, was an act of self-condemnation and self-recrimination.  I think it was Lestat condemning himself into darkness, and in so doing, sealing himself off from any possibility for self-delusion or ability to hide from the choice he had made, that choice being to once again become a vampire.  Lestat sees that choice as proof of his evil, and his conscience in the form of Claudia throughout the story is him tormenting himself over what he believes is his own hypocrisy and the falsity of his grief and guilt.  He’s asking himself over and over again what kind of person is he, that he enjoys being a vampire.  That he likes being this monster that he is, and that he keeps bringing others into it with him.  He’s suffering from immense guilt over that specifically, over his ability to thrive in and enjoy his vampirism, but also his inability to live without someone to share his life with, and tragically, he doesn’t see how that very fact proves him wrong about this negative self-image he has, this belief of himself as an irredeemable monster.

In the moment Lestat attacks and turns David, he’s playing a role.  He becomes this viciously cold, unfeeling and cruel person.  He’s acting like a true villain, like the very devil himself.  I’ve never seen Lestat be so mean.  And that powerfully contrasts with the person we see him as throughout every book up to this point, which is this sort of ill-tempered, but ultimately good-natured and positive person.  A kind of childlike innocent, almost, a sort of bumbling, impulsive and lovable rogue.  Someone who, at his core, is actually kind of a sweetheart.  Lestat’s behavior with David in this scene is so contradictory and so unlike how he is, throughout all the books, even IWTV, that it  strikes me completely as a performance.

And again the question comes of why.  Immediately after the act, Lestat reverts back into how he’s been throughout the story.  He’s deeply remorseful, guilt ridden, ashamed and miserable.  He begins to cry again.  The seeming relish and enjoyment he appeared to display during the attack is gone.  He hates what he’s done.  He hates that he did this to David.  He knows it was wrong and he thinks he deserves nothing now from the world but to be treated with evil.

I think this was Lestat punishing himself, in a way.  Forcing himself to face and accept his own monstrosity, and giving himself no place to hide from it, no place in which to seek solace from the torment of his own self-loathing. 

These are the final words of this story

“I wanted to say something to her as I held the locket; I wanted to say something to the being she had been, and to my own weakness, and to the greedy wicked being in me who had once again triumphed.  For I had.  I had won.

Yes, I wanted to say something so terribly much!  And would that it were full of poetry, and deep meaning, and would ransom my greed and my evil, and my lusty little heart.  For I was going to Rio, wasn’t I, and with David, and with Louis, and a new era was beginning...

Yes, say something- for the love of heaven and the love of Claudia- to darken it and show it for what it is!  Dear God, to lance it and show the horror at the core.

But I could not.

What more is there to say, really?

The tale is told.”

He’s disgusted with himself for his ability to carry on, to continue to not just live, but thrive, even in the face of what he believes is his evil.  He thinks he should remain in misery, that he should suffer and sink and self-destruct, and that he doesn’t is somehow proof of his evil, proof of his villainy and wickedness.  That is, after all, what he’s been told all his life by pretty much everyone.  That his eternal hope and optimism is, in fact, an engine of malice and destruction.  That his strength, his will to win, his refusal to “go down” is somehow indicative of wrongness, something obscene and unnatural and greedy, a weakness of character, a deep lack in his person. 

He condemns himself throughout these last chapters for his ability to be happy, to find happiness in the midst of his monstrosity, for his ability to rise above.

Lestat doing what he did to David was, I think, a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Believing himself so evil, and so beyond redemption, he chooses instead to embrace his damnation, and seal it in stone, refusing himself in the process any escape from his own torment.  If he does this thing, then he can no longer live in any kind of illusion as to who and what he is.  He can no longer lie to himself, he can no longer see himself capable of good or believe even that he ever wanted to be good.  And so I think he does this because he wants to suffer.  He wants to be punished.  He wants to remember, even in his moments of happiness, that he doesn’t deserve to be happy.  To remind himself that he’s the kind of person who would thoroughly betray and violate one of his very best friends, and so he doesn’t deserve love then either.  In a way, I feel, it’s his attempt to sink, to go down, to self-destruct, because, through all of this, he’s been made to believe completely that his great will and courage and ability to win is the very thing that marks him as a devil.  That it’s his very core, his very self, that is the true source of wrong in him.  And so maybe, if he’s forced to acknowledge that, if he’s forced to accept that, then that will somehow, at last, defeat him.

1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?

There were some k-pop ships I used to ship but as time went by I just stopped. Maybe because I’m not as much into k-pop as I used to be.

I also don’t ship any of Hetalia’s characters anymore.

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

Stella and Brandon from Winx Club or Kevin and Gewn from Ben 10: Alien Force. That was even before I was aware of what shipping was.

While I was aware, I think it was Shizaya? Durarara was one of the first animes I watched. And Heiwajima Shizuo and Orihara Izaya's love-hate relationship was so good for a 12-year-old me.

Or it could be SasuNaru…

3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

Written it was Merciless. 

But read? That was so long time ago...

I remember I found some Ben 10 stories on the Internet and I read a lot of them as a kid.

But when I read and I was aware I was reading fanfics it was most likely SasuNaru or Darry. It was most likely still on Wattpad or fanfiction.net. On or those self-publishing blogs. Those were popular back then.

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

Probably SasuNaru. Or another ship that was popular at the beginning of the 2010s.

5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?

I try not to. I mostly believe that fiction is fiction and when I don't like something I just don't read it.

I like to read people's points of view though.

6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently?

Not really. I used to hate UkFrance from Hetalia but now I just don't care. And I never really shipped Destiel. But I'm not sure I would call them a no-otp.

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

A new chapter of Merciless fic that I'm always waiting for was published. It's called Hidsight by duty_free. AND IT'S AWESOME, GO READ IT. It's a wonderful continuation to The Merciless that can actually fix those two morons (I have hope, it's still ongoing)

Before it, my friend @frayed-at-the-seams published her fic about Junho and Hoyeol from D.P. It's called Dogs and Cats. It's an interesting supernatural spin on the original story and it allows Junho and Hoyeol to be cute ❤️

Zeke x Levi from Shingeki no Kyojin. I used to not be much into it but there is an amazing reincarnation comic AU on twitter (here) with them and I have to say that they have a potential.

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be canceled over?

Not sure... There were some ships that I wasn't aware of age. I don't mind ships with big age differences but I like for both parties to be over 18.

So maybe as an example Levi x Eren? Eren was 15 and now looking back I'm not sure if I would ship it. 

12. What was your favorite crack ship?

Tried to think of something but my head is empty. I don't believe I don't have any crack ships!

13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of?

Shizaya, GinHiji or ChanBaek. They have big fandoms so I could just move from one fic to another. 

Also YoonMin. I used to ship them a lot but now not really but I read a lot of fics with them.

14. What most of your ships usually have in common?

They usually banter or tease each other. Those love-hate relationships are my favorites. And more of them lately have an age difference.

15. What you absolutely hate in a ship?

Lack of chemistry? I hate too much drama but also don't like where everything is fine. And cheating.

"Good morning, gentlemen!" Sirius exclaimed loudly, closing the door behind him, his hair tousled and his lips slightly swollen.

“Where’ve you been?” James asked groggily, getting up slightly and raising his head to look at Sirius. “That Charms study session that Moony has way too early for his own good?”

Sirius nodded, flopping himself in bed next to James and rubbing his scalp in soothing circles. “Since when are you so interested in where I’m going, Prongs, my dearest?

“You’re the best at Charms in our whole year, Pads. There’s no way you’re actually going to learn something. You never even study! And, besides, you smell like those awful cigarettes that you smoke.” James groaned, pinching his nose dramatically.

“Oh, fuck off, I smoked one yesterday!”

“As if you ever smoke just one,” James cackled, and Sirius grabbed his friend’s pillow and hit him square in the face. “Hey! Is this because you know I’m right?”

“What the fuck are you talking about!?” Peter moaned, covering his head with the duvet. “It’s like seven o’clock in the bloody morning, no one should have the right to be this loud at this devil hour.”

“Okay!” Sirius exclaimed, clasping his hands together. “Now that Sir Sleepyhead’s up as well, we shall talk about Halloween costumes. I was thinking maybe singers? Peter, you can be Janis Joplin.”

“Why Janis Joplin?” Peter moaned, getting up from bed and rubbing his eyes. “My mum’s obsessed with her big time, she was her biggest fan in the whole world, went to Woodstock and everything, the last thing I need is you sending her a picture of me with long hair and dressed as a hippie.”

“Oh, come on, she’ll love it!” James wheezed, clutching his stomach as he erupted into fits of laughter. “I bet!”

Peter grumbled something that seemed to be some profanities, but then slipped into James’ bed. “Fine then, Macho Man. What are you going as? Padfoot, if you’re not making him dress up as Jim Morrison, I swear I’m not coming to the party.”

“Either Freddie Mercury or Jimi Hendrix, I know he likes the latter more than the first one, but still, maybe he wants to be Sexy Mercury.”

James’ eyes lit up and he pumped up his fist victoriously; Peter slapped Sirius’ back playfully, then let his head hit the bedpost.

“Oh, so I’m the one you’re taking the piss out of!? Why can’t I be Roger Taylor and we can just go as Queen? Do I have to be the one who’s dressed up like Janis Joplin? Why don’t you go as her, Sirius?” Peter sighed dramatically.

“Because I’m not a blonde,” Sirius grinned, leaning forward. “I think I’ll go as Mick Jagger, and Moony’s said he’ll be David Bowie. So we’re both sexy musicians, and Prongs will be The Jimi Hendrix.”

“Didn’t they say that Bowie and Jagger hooked up?” James asked, his brows furrowed. Sirius looked up to him, fiddling with his black lighter, and just winked; his friend stuck his tongue out.

“Why am I a dead woman!?”

“‘Cause you’ll be dead if you keep asking so many questions,” Sirius blew Peter a raspberry, fishing for a cigarette from his jeans’ pocket.

Absolute classics, fast paced, and intense. I also really love James Dean of course… and every other song because it’s really good lol. Neither are very pg though 🫢

A City Dressed In Dynamite

My personal favorite album, and two of my #1 songs! I’m normally not a fan of slower songs, but GOD do I love Reagan’s Kids. It hits so hard. Squares is really fun, and the instrumental is really good.

The Heart Goes to Heaven, The Head Goes to Hell

Honestly not my favorite album because there’s a lot of slower songs, but these two specifically did it perfectly. This one was hard to pick from for sure, but these ones make me the most emotional lol (do NOT mention Charlie’s Inferno 😡 there are other songs!)

Drugs & Guns For Everyone

Probably my second favorite album, every song has it’s own unique feel and are fantastic. I’m OBSESSED with Goldfish Brain. The second one was harder to pick, because there’s so many good ones. And a lot of them are really growing on me

Your Parents are Sellouts

Ugh this album is also so good! Definitely the hardest to pick, so I chose Shutup You’re Stupid because it was one of the first ones I liked and La Di Frickin Da because I’ve been listening to that one a lot lately. The instrumental in this album is so good omg

Karaoke Burial isn’t on Spotify, but it’s my favorite of the 5 extra ACDID albums! Then Powderbomb, then Atom Shell, then Romance is Dead, and then Power Drunk. (Fantastic songs. I’m still mad they aren’t on Spotify)

In canon, is it ever known how Palpatine became a sith? I’m guessing he became a sith in his 30s and that’s when his obsession with immortality started

We do not.

So far, all we know is that Darth Plagueis died earlier than he did in the Legends book Darth Plagueis, I seem to remember Pablo Hidalgo tweeting about that once or twice (then again, Hidalgo himself insists that we shouldn't take his word as law in these cases).

There was also this live-action TV show George Lucas was working on, Star Wars: Underworld. It was being developed in parallel to TCW but in the end he left it alone. You can see test-filming for it here.

It was loosely tied with the game Star Wars: 1313, which would've delved into the eponymous floor of the Coruscant underworld. Apparently, the show tackled a young Palpatine falling in love with this female gangster, and how she just destroys him as a person. The name "Sheev" didn't just come outta nowhere, it is the name Palpatine would've had in this show, according to James Luceno.

Edit: I'll add that I don't think it matters so much how he started. Symbolically-speaking, Palpatine's meant to be the Devil. I'd rather not see him as a sympathetic figure. There's a certain fairy-tale aspect to Star Wars that I appreciate, and the Emperor being a particular brand of evil is something I like.

Review:

The final book in the trilogy and Halen and Kallum's story is finally at it's end, facing off against a dangerous cult, the secrets Kallum is still keeping, and the question of whether Halen can embrace the monster within. Halen's memories have finally been unlocked and there are still monsters in the town that Halen has to catch... all the while dealing with her feelings and new relationship with Kallum. Kallum's obsessive nature and mental state is questionable at best yet his only goal is to be with Halen. He'll protect her even if it means he'll have to bloody his hands which leaves Halen with the question... can she embrace their love or will she run away again? Halen will have to face her own first crime... the one she asked Kallum to erase from her memory and now she has it back... how far will she go to solve her new case? Can Halen and Kallum be together or are both their hands too bloodied? I have loved this series from the first book and this ending was absolutely perfect. I loved Halen and Kallum's relationship, their love for each other and just how far Kallum was willing to go to twist fate to make Halen his. Their story was so enticing and it was a thrill ride all the way until the end. Halen has to face her demons and embrace her own darkness if she wants to find the new killers and to figure out how she can really love Kallum. Truly, this is a fantastic series and perfect for fans of dark romances and romances with similar vibes to Hannibal ( you know who you are haha). This one was perfect for me and I can't wait to read more books by Trisha Wolfe!

27 Dresses (2008)

While cynics may scoff at the tropes found within 27 Dresses – the couple who dislike each other at first, the obligatory lack of communication that causes the breakup, the moment the guy realizes he’s in love so he goes on a chase to get the girl, etc.  - those beats are what its intended audience want to see. A better criticism is the ridiculously contrived and improbable premise and the fact that, in the end, the picture is forgettable.

Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) has been a bridesmaid 27 times. In fact, she’s obsessed with weddings. While begrudgingly helping her younger sister Tess (Malin Åkerman) get ready for her own ceremony – during which she’ll be marrying Jane’s secret crush and boss, George (Edward Burns) – she meets cynical wedding columnist Kevin (James Marsden), who is secretly writing an article about the woman that is always a bridesmaid, but never a bride.

27 Dresses feels less like a movie and more like an excuse to have stuff happen. Jane has been instrumental in helping couples tie the knot since she was 8 years old… but what does she do for a living? She’s working in an advertising department. Her career path makes no sense, particularly considering she’s got no hobbies other than weddings. She’s crazy about them. She’s cutting out newspaper articles to keep, has held onto every single dress she’s ever worn as a bridesmaid, and keeps in touch with the women she helped along the years. That’s the first improbability of many we encounter. Some you can excuse because otherwise this plot wouldn’t happen. I wouldn't criticize Spider-Man for detailing the character’s origins, introducing a villain he’ll go up against, and ending in a big confrontation between the two. Similarly, I’m not going to tear apart 27 Dresses for following some of its genre's conventions… but my good will only goes so far. A woman like Katherine Heigl would hardly have trouble ensnaring a man. Compare this story to another written by Aline Brosh McKenna: The Devil Wears Prada. Where’s the wit, the subtlety, the subversions?

There’s not much else to say about 27 Dresses. The leads have decent chemistry. If you like seeing pretty outfits, there’s a nice montage of them about halfway though. These do not make up for the lack of romance, sweetness, or laughs you would expect from a rom-com. I suppose it could be entertaining to show this picture to easily enraged feminists, as every single woman in this film (save for Melora Hardin’s character) has no other ambitions in life besides finding a man, getting him to propose, and then living the rest of her life blissfully married. You might get some laughs if you jump through those hoops, but not many, and you'd have to suffer through it too, so who's winning, really?

The only thing memorable about 27 Dresses is its ridiculous premise. Even if you are the kind of person who would see beyond its flaws and enjoy the film, you won’t remember it a week after the credits roll. (Full-screen version on DVD, November 15, 2017)
