the fact that Eddie and Tommy are friends opens up just SO many fun possibilities for this entire dynamic

I want to talk about ace Eddie so I’m going to talk about ace Eddie! this episode was absolutely delicious and I know many many people will tell me that I’m reading too much into this and it is simply what the show said: his catholic guilt. Which is compelling enough already but stick with me.
ace Eddie is so so near and dear to my heart and I enjoy analyzing his arcs and his relationships through that lens. The fact that ABC allows characters to have these candid conversations is !!!
this episode in particular is delicious in terms of ace Eddie (I’m sorry, I’m not wording this wonderfully, it’s been a very bad pain day). He initially says to Buck:
“I got here early to avoid not having sex” and yes, the reason he gives is his catholic guilt. But I also just want to pay attention to the way he was speaking about it after revealing to Buck that he was avoiding being home. He was purposefully using vague, almost immature (in the sense of the way younger people take about sex) language and justifying himself by saying that Christopher was away, so they had time to themselves so naturally… it felt very much like this was how he was supposed to be feeling and what he was supposed to doing because his son was away because they had free time, the natural conclusion to him was that they would have sex.
he also says “Marisol likes to have it in the morning” which, granted, could simply indicate that he prefers it at other times but if we look at it through the perspective of ace!Eddie indicates that they have sex when Marisol wants to rather than when Eddie wants to (if he ever broaches the subject at all). This also lines up with the way he spoke about having sex with Shannon which primarily centered around her desires and his ability to fulfill them rather than his own wants and needs. The discussion with Bobby only further solidified this. He suggests that this is simply Eddie’s reaction to moving too quickly, indicating that there was very little that he had heard about Marisol prior to her moving in. Now, and again I recognize I may be reading too much into it, but for me the way they framed Marisol moving in by opening with them having sex, it reinforces this idea that for Eddie, sex is easy and expected and there’s a natural progression of a relationship that he’s meant to follow (mentioned in his conversation with Bobby). He’s meant to have sex, enjoy sex, ask a girl to move in with him etc.
at any point in time, he could have texted Marisol or gone back to the house and simply told her that he didn’t want to have sex with her just then. If he was seriously concerned that she would be upset or ignore him, that’s a different issue entirely. However, he has so much anxiety over sex and his own role as a man in a relationship that he ignores this idea altogether. He would rather avoid her all day than face the idea of coming home and not being able to provide sex. Sex that he doesn’t even necessarily want. I also think that’s why it’s so important to his character that his restarting with Marisol wasn’t predicated on a sexual encounter but rather on his own terms. It’s the first time that we’ve seen him take the time to say ‘maybe this isn’t necessarily something I’m ready for.’ And it’s WONDERFUL to see that.
Eddie’s relationships and his relationship to sex specifically is something that is incredibly fascinating to me because it screams amatanormativity and over compensating for something you’ve been told you should want and provide. Noted, I don’t necessarily like Eddie and Marisol and I certainly don’t like Marisol’s actress (I truly hope she leaves the series soon). However, I do like what this relationship is teaching Eddie about himself. I like that he’s slowing down and taking the time to think about what he wants rather than what’s expected of him.

Buck and Eddie get trapped in an elevator, which would be fine except Buck’s skipped a few meals recently and he’s a little hungry. He’s also not exactly told his best friend everything about himself so the secret he’s been keeping is about to be revealed at the worst possible time in the worst possible way.
Buck can handle it though and if it comes to it he knows what he has to do to keep Eddie safe.
Eddie however has his own thoughts on the subject and sometimes secrets aren’t as secret as you think.
It was supposed to be an ordinary evening, one just like they have two or three times a month.
A bar, a few drinks, then back to his loft if Chris was busy or to Eddie’s if they had to get back for a sitter. Just an ordinary evening like so many others before it but tonight it’s gone wrong. So very wrong.
They’d reached his jeep and Buck had realised his phone was still sitting on his kitchen counter . He’d said wait here but no, Eddie had decided he’d come with him. He wanted to continue the conversation (argument) they were having about the best Italian to take his parents to when they visited in a few weeks.
So Eddie followed him and now Buck’s in an elevator with his best friend standing too close to him, smelling too delicious and smiling too brightly. He could have run up to his loft so quickly, true it’s a bit of a risk but no one else ever uses the stairs in his apartment block so no one would have seen him and Eddie would have just assumed he’d taken the lift anyway so no problem.
Normally he wouldn’t mind the extra time with Eddie but it’s been a bit too long since he’s eaten properly and he’s starting to feel it. He’s on a new feeding plan designed to help focus the mind on each meal, mindful eating it’s called, it’s supposed to help you feel more satisfied so you can wait longer between feeding. He’s not completely convinced but he had to try something new to take his mind off his rising desires and the fixation he’s developing on certain body parts; necks, wrists and well thighs too.
To be honest, its not exactly the body parts that are getting to him, he’s actually fine most of the time. The issue is more about a certain person's body parts.  Eddie’s to be precise. Tonight he’s not helping Buck’s increasingly problematic issue. He’s wearing a particularly, and Buck doesn’t like to think it but it's true; slutty, slightly see through top with a neckline that’s low already and an open button that makes part of it flop even lower. He’s trying very very hard not to look. Eddie’s been wearing tops like that more often and ignoring that kind of temptation is a challenge he’s not sure he’s up to especially with the close proximity of the elevator and the edges of his hunger Getting sharper.
It’ll be fine, it’s just a phase. He can cope.
Probably.
Possibly?
Well most of the time at least.
Ok, so the thighs are definitely a problem, he can’t even be in the gym with Eddie anymore, the shorts he wears are definitely getting shorter and Buck’s only human.
Well, not even that actually.
it’s all affecting his mood. Eddie’s been complaining that he’s grumpy recently, which is accurate. Buck had explained his food plan minus a few key details of course and Eddie had said it sounded like  a stupid fad diet. He’d insisted - not a diet, a food plan. Nothing wrong with that.
Maddie had also said it was a stupid idea. She’d said that he needed to eat properly, that diets wouldn’t work. He’d replied; not a diet, a food plan but his beloved sister had lifted a skeptical eyebrow and then told him he should just, finally talk to Eddie about it all. Tell him she said. He’d ignored her obviously but now as the elevator shudders to a halt he’s inclined to think she might have had a point. More than one actually.
Too late now.
Shit.
This might be a problem.

wondering if you've read any fics recently. I read this 40k won that had Eddie being mute cause of an accident and that was stunning that was great and then I read this one called A Date To Remember which I really liked as well.
Hi anon, I most definitely have! Excellent choice on your part to read @rewritetheending's silent!Eddie fic! Since you liked that, you can go and choose literally any of her other fics, they will all leave you breathless. In fact, read them all, would be my suggestion. Might I suggest starting with, for example, never felt this way before (yes i swear) the Dirty Dancing AU, if i told my secrets (if you knew the truth) in which Eddie tells Buck he loves him at the very beginning of the fic and they figure out the rest over the course of it, or turned around backwards (it's so much clearer) in which Eddie wakes up Buck in the middle of the night to take a trip down memory lane, while they're staying a night in El Paso during the crossover episode.
Since I'm not sure if you're looking for something specific, I'll throw out a mix of things I've read recently and eternal classics. So:
take you in and make you mine by @try-set-me-on-fire where they both get a little hurt in a fire and Eddie doesn't know what they're waiting for anymore. (4.5k)
in the night we trust by @glorious-spoon where they start sleeping together while quarantining at Buck's and it still takes them years to realize what it all meant to them. (29.2k)
let the world have its way with you by @shitouttabuck where Buck makes a bucket list to help see the joys in life again, and Eddie and Chris help him cross items off it. (54.5k)
and the light on the water gleams ch.4: sweater weather by @buckactuallys where they wear each others clothes and I completely melted over it. The fic is a collection of prompt fills, so you can read every chapter as a standalone story. (1k)
i don't swim and you're not in love by @hattalove where Ana is starting to take up more space in Eddie's life, and Buck wonders why he feels so miserable about it. Makes me lie on the floor and stare at the ceiling. (32.4k)
keep going, keep going come what may by @fcntasmas where Buck is the last man on Earth and keeps seeing visions of his loved ones talking to him. Maybe that sounds weird but I promise it's worth it, it knocks the breath out of me every time. (10.7k)
Like Any Unloved Thing by @hmslusitania, a noir urban fantasy AU where Eddie is a private detective that gets tasked with finding the missing Evan Buckley. Cannot say enough good things about it! (18.1k)
at the right time by @elisela in which Buck is a teacher and has Chris in one of his classes, but also meets Eddie in completely different circumstances and they start dating. Buck isn't allowed to date his student's parent, though, and there is much delicious yearning once they connect the dots. Happy ending, so no worries there. (24.2k)
Hope you like these, and feel free to ask for more recommendations!

For someone who didn't watch either show just an FYI you nailed McDanno and Chemford. For me also McDanno was to on the nose to bother with. It would have been aces, but it was to much like Turk and JD you know. The other reason I don't see mentioned as much is the fact that the other characters constantly teased them over their closeness. Which in the 911 universe doesn't happen. Why? In my opinion because when something is sensitive and you get the vibe, well you don't make fun of it. Outside of Maddie recognizing Bucks new relationship energy is regards to Eddie, and Bobby's knowing glances.
Also if you ever watch it you will love Tim and Lucy. Readers digest version is simple and yes they are Buddie.
Lucy admires Tim, he's a legend. She wants to work with him and earn it. It's handled so well and not in any way ever having Tim use the power dynamic against her that I'm confident in saying that as you watch her you always know there is some sort of crush in varying ways. The moment for me though was when he awkwardly asks her to save him a dance at an event. It was then that you saw though her expressiveness that, wait is there anyway he can like me too??? She's just so Buck that way!!
Then you have Tim, he has little patience for BS. He knows he's good. He reminds me of Eddie because he's sarcastic to everyone but different to her. And again it's not gross because you can tell he admires her for her brain and she challenges him.
Of course they have a scene of him literally digging her out of a grave. At that moment I was like so we are just having soul mates dig each other out of places now are we?
Hi lovely Nonnie! Thank you so much for this ask.
I’m so glad to hear you feel I got McDanno and Chenford right, without even having watched those shows. XD I think it’s always nice to hear your proficiency in “reading” TV couples is good.
Yeah, we got a bit of teasing at first from Maddie and A LOT of knowing looks, but nothing beyond that when it comes to Buddie. Even when we’re talking about Maddie’s teasing Buck regarding Eddie, I think the most significant thing is that it was happening as a parallel to Buck telling Maddie he could see right through Madney. Buck was Maddie’s truth teller when she couldn’t yet admit it, and so this parallel made her into her brother’s truth teller as well. That cements the teasing as being more telling than if it were just a group of friends joking around.
Thank you for the rec regarding Tim and Lucy! They do sound like an awesome couple, VERY similar to Buddie indeed (I love the tidbits you shared, especially the digging that parallels Buddie in 315), and from the little I knew about them already, a delicious slow burn. I am tempted to watch, but I also have so many other shows I’d like to see, for their gay / Jewish content, and there are just not enough hours in the day. :( So I have to be realistic and acknowledge my limits. However, if you continue to follow them and feel like updating me when there’s stuff that feels very relevant to Buddie, I would always love to hear from you about it! ;)
Have a wonderful day, hon! As always, here’s my ask tag. xoxox

couples cooking class au 👀
made with love [1.4k | alternate meeting | AU] tw: minor mentions of canon minor character death a/n: welp, this became much longer than it was supposed to be. set around season 2 sometime ish, but its an au so i made the timeline work for me😌. the title is well.. something... idk its the best i could think of🤣.enjoy!
Buck clicks off his phone with a sigh. He should have cancelled this stupid class the minute Abby had left him at the airport.
He looks around the room at all the couples setting up their stations together, tying each other's aprons, smiling, hands landing on the small of their backs as they pass each other, shoulder touches. Every little thing telegraphs to him that he is out of place without a partner.
His eyes finally drift to the front of the room, where the instructor is speaking with a man with brown hair that is perfectly coiffed, he seems like he feels out of place too. The instructor points towards Buck, and that's when Buck sees his eyes for the first time. Even from across the room they shine like honey, perfectly golden brown, and soft. He shakes his head, reminding himself that Abby is coming back, he just has to be patient. And in the meantime he's gonna learn to cook...for two...
His spiral is cut short by the man walking up to his station holding out his hand with a tight smile, and his eyebrows raised a little,
"I'm Eddie, Alice said you were also missing your partner today and that since the class is designed for two people that it would make it easier on both of us if we work together," his voice is soft, yet has an edge to it that has strength, everything about it seems contradictory. And God his eyes were even better up close.
"Makes sense. uh, I'm Buck," he takes Eddie's hand, and is again dumbfounded by the way in which his hands are soft and gentle, but are also rough and calloused.
They each tie their aprons separately and in silence. They stand there in silence, eyes fixed to the front of the classroom, waiting for Alice to start the class. |
They reach the portion of the class that is just waiting for the items to bake and they have been instructed to take the time to clean their work spaces. And they work in perfect tandem. It's almost magical.
"So, what brings you to couples cooking class solo?" Buck asks, finally acknowledging the elephant in the room.
"Uh, it was supposed to be a couples therapy exercise with my wife," Eddie replies, very focused on wiping the counter in circles, "but uhh, she asked for a divorce."
"Shit. Sorry, man. Why'd you come anyway?" He winces, his curiosity outrunning his filter.
"Figured that my kid deserves some good food whether or not we are still married I guess."
"You got a kid?" god damn it Buck, his inner voice chides him, it sounds a lot like Maddie.
"Yeah, Christopher, he's seven," he pulls up his phone lock screen,
"And super adorable! I uh love kids," he cringes internally again but hides it with a smile.
"I love this one," Eddie's smile is the first one that seems really genuine, "And what about you?"
"My girlfriend is traveling, finding herself. Forgot to cancel," he shrugs.
At the end of the class after they have tried their creation, which was delicious which was surprising to Eddie if his face was anything to go by, Eddie turns to him,
"Seeing as cooking with you I have made something that's edible that is beyond a bowl of cereal, you can have my back in the kitchen any day,"
"Or, you know, you could have mine," Buck smiles.
---
The next week Eddie teases him about his invisible girlfriend. And Buck tells him about how Maddie came back and immediately told him Abby was sleeping with other guys.
Eddie tells him how Christopher read him to filth over his cooking after he had tried to recreate their dish from last week and Christopher's science project for school.
---
The next time Buck sees Eddie is not in the classroom.
They are dropping off a patient at the hospital, when he sees him in the waiting room. His hair is a mess, and his eyes look haunted. His whole body is exhausted.
"Eddie?" he doesn't mean to let so much concern bleed through. Eddie looks up, "What are you doing here? Is everything okay with  Chris?" He'd never even met the kid and his pulse was racing at the thought.
"Buck? Christopher's fine. It's his mom," he wipes a hand over his mouth, "She's- They don't think she'll ever wake up. She's gone, but I still have to give them the go ahead. And then I have to tell him," he bites his lip and squeezes his eyes shut.
"Eddie, I am so sorry." It feels like nothing. He wishes he could do more.
"Buck, we gotta head out," Bobby says
"Do you need me? Cause unless it's a five alarm I think I need to stay here-"
"Buck you barely know me-"
"I said I have your back Eddie. I think in this case that extends to outside the kitchen."
Buck gives Bobby a look and he nods,
"Just let me know if you can make it back."
"You got it Cap! Thank you." Buck settles into the seat next to Eddie. “You don’t have to do this you know,” Eddie sighs after a few moments. “Felt like you shouldn’t be alone right now,” “You should be working, helping people,” “Are you not people?” “You never told me you are a firefighter,” Eddie deflects. “When did you eat last?” Buck asks ignoring Eddie’s observation. “Before I got here,” he replies, “Which was when?” “You don’t give up do you?” Buck just shrugs and gives him a pointed look, “I had some coffee this morning. But I think it’s almost been 24 hours since I ate something,” he finally admits. “All right. C’mon. Up. We’re gonna go get food.” “The cafeteria doesn’t have anything good Buck,” “Who said we were going to the cafeteria?” Eddie looks up at him confused, “You said it yourself, I’m supposed to be working, and it just so happens that Cap and I are making his signature mac and cheese for lunch today. I also happen to think you need to get out of here for a little bit before making this decision final, so you are coming with me. We also happen to have showers and I have extra clothes since I am basically living out of my car right now, not that I think you stink or anything.” And Eddie just keeps staring at him and he pulls out his phone to text Bobby and call an uber for them.
“You’re living out of your car?” Is what Eddie asks as he stands to follow Buck out the doors. “Yeah I finally moved out of Abby’s place. Broke up with her, officially. Even though I don’t think she was ever coming back.” Eddie hums. “Anyway, you don’t need to hear about drama and stupidity.”
“No, tell me. I need to think about something else.” So Buck launches into everything that happened. And then when that is exhausted, he tells Eddie all about who he’ll meet at the station.
—-
The next few weeks he cooks alone. He texts Eddie every now and then, just checking in. He even made him and Christopher a lasagna with Bobby and dropped it off. —-
About a month after their meeting in the waiting room, Buck walks into the classroom and finds Eddie standing at their station with a small smile. “Hey,” Buck says, “ I missed you,” he knocks Eddie’s shoulder, “Hi. Missed you too.” Eddie says, “Hey, uh, can I talk to you, after class?” And for the first time Buck hears nerves in Eddie’s voice. It reminds him of the time Rachel Barlow had asked him out in 9th grade. “Yeah, of course,” he smiles.
After class they end up next to Eddie’s truck out in the parking lot,
“What did you want to talk to me about?” Buck asks,
“Oh. I just. I wanted to say thank you, for everything you did for me that day. So, thank you,” he looks so intently at Buck, his brown eyes shiny,
“My pleasure,” and he takes Eddie’s hand in his and squeezes and before he can pull away, Eddie squeezes back, looking at him again, “I also wanted to ask, if you maybe wanted to go on a date sometime? It might be a little while until I’m ready, so I understand if you don’t want to wait-” “I would love to. Whenever you’re ready. Take your time, I’ll wait.”

♡ Word Count: 1.8k

♡ Summary: A long day takes a very sweet turn when you finally meet the blue eyed stranger from the ice cream shop.
♡ Note: For you @thatnerdemryn I hope you enjoy it :D Not beta’d
Tumblr media
Everybody has their own little ways of rewarding themselves for working hard at a boring job all day, studying non stop, and just getting through daily life.
One of your little pick me ups is stopping by your favorite ice cream shop—Benny’s—on the way home from work. It’s right on the pier, locally owned and has been around since you were a child. Store bought stuff simply can’t compare to the taste, and you just love it.
It’s a cozy setup, and they’ve got a few tables set up outside where you can eat your sugary treat and have a beautiful view of the glimmering ocean and sunset.
The perfect way to destress.
So here you are, after a long day standing patiently in line waiting for your turn. It’s a bit busier than normal as it’s a Friday, but you don’t really mind. There’s a jovial feeling in the air and it’s nice to see the pier alive.
Besides, you're a bit distracted by the familiar pair standing in front of you in line. A rather handsome, tall young man with dirty blonde hair and kind blue eyes, wearing a loose blue shirt and gray sweats with white sneakers. Whilst his son—at least you assume—is adorable with green eyes and fluffy hazel hair, dressed in a yellow button up, beige shorts, and brown sandals.
You usually see them here when you come, and they always look like they’re having the best time together.
Currently, the boy is talking about his latest school project in which he has to create a replica of a volcano erupting. He’s very excited about making it, and you can tell by the way his father replies to him, he is too.
It’s a very endearing sight that always brings a smile to your face.
And you’d be lying if you said you weren’t just a bit enchanted by the father. Not only is he very easy on the eyes, but he just has a very sweet friendly vibe. The two of you have never spoken, but you’ve shared a brief smile here and there, and maybe some lingering gazes.
Maybe you’ve got a little crush on the stranger, which you know is a bit silly, since he’s probably married or something, but oh well. It’s not like you have the courage to speak to him and find out either way.
The line slowly moves forward until they’re up and, and before you know, it's your turn and the familiar face of the ice cream scooper is in front of you.
A teenager who you noticed started working here the last few weeks named Gina. She has a peppy demeanor with bright red hair and almond shaped brown eyes.
“Hello! What can I get for you today?” She says cheerfully.
“Uhh,” you mutter, eyes roving over the multitude of delicious and colorful flavors displayed through the transparent ice cream counter.
You’re not sure why you even bother thinking about it, considering you always get the same flavor. “A strawberry double scoop, on a sugar cone, please.”
“Coming right up!”
By the time she finishes and you’ve paid, the father son duo are sitting together at one of the small inside booths, chatting together and eating their ice cream. You only mean to look for a second, but you notice the blue-eyed stranger has a bit of chocolate ice-cream on his nose from his cone.
He doesn’t appear to have noticed, and judging from the mischievous smile on his son’s face, he won’t be telling him anytime soon.
You chuckle, and wait for the moment he happens to catch your eye. Thankfully, he notices you rather quickly, and you bring a hand up to your nose poking it lightly and arching an eyebrow. Hoping he gets the message.
He understands easily enough, shooting you an embarrassed, but grateful look before dipping his head down with a smile and grabbing a napkin to dab the ice cream away.
How cute they both are. I hope they have a good rest of their day.
Putting your change into the tip jar, you toss a final thank you to the cashier before making your way out.
However, as you’re exiting through the front door, an older man trying to enter brushes past you abruptly, startling you and causing your ice cream cone to slip out of your hand and fall to the ground.
“Oh man, I’m sorry about that,” you apologize, despite them being the one who caused the accident.
He barely tosses you a glance before walking on inside, and gives you a curt, “Watch where you’re going next time.” Not an inkling of apology or regret in his voice.
A tinge of annoyance flits through you at his rudeness and the loss of your ice cream, which is now melting on the sidewalk as you let out a long sigh.
Your one treat of the day, and it was ruined before you even got the chance to taste it. Inhaling sharply, you make a conscious decision not to let his behavior ruin your day. It’s fine. You can just get back in line again, no big deal.
However, spending another ten minutes waiting again just doesn’t seem appealing at the moment.
Maybe you’d just take a minute to breathe first.
Shaking off the unpleasant interaction, you pick up the cone and toss it in the green trash can by the door before walking over to one of the empty picnic tables facing the ocean.
You sit on the seat backwards, lounging your back against the wood as you take a deep breath and let yourself bask in the cool evening air.
The sun is now setting, creating a stunning melody of orange and purple hues that reflect over the cobalt water. Seeing this picturesque view is a pick up in itself, and as you take it in, the days worries slowly melt away from your mind.
A few minutes pass by, before you hear the thump of two pairs of foot falls behind you.
You don’t bother turning around at first, figuring it’s just people passing by, until someone taps you softy on the shoulder.
“Oh,” you say in surprise, as you turn your head to the right to see the little green eyed boy from the line, and his handsome father standing behind him.
Both of them are smiling at you, and you notice he’s holding a Benny’s cup filled with strawberry ice cream and a spoon sticking out of it to you.
“Hi, I’m Christopher and this is Buck, and um… we noticed you dropped yours… so we got you a new one.” He says, giving you a shy smile and urging you to take the cone.
The sweetness of the gesture surprises you, a smile spreading across your face as you quickly stand up, and take it from him.
“Wow, thank you so much, Christopher. It’s nice to meet you both, I’m Y/N, and y’all didn’t have to do this, it’s so kind.” You’re not sure what to say, honestly so grateful and taken aback by this.
“It’s no problem at all, we noticed that guy bumped into you and didn’t even apologize.” The man you now know as Buck, explains as he shakes his head slightly. Disapproval clear in his voice.
“Mhm, that wasn’t very nice. I’m sorry.” Christopher adds, his brown eyebrows knitted together.
Ah, so they saw that and everything? They must have finished up and bought one for me right away… how sweet.
“No, it wasn’t, but it’s okay. I really appreciate you both doing this, and you cleary have a very sweet son, Buck.”
Confusion crosses Christopher and Buck’s faces as they glance at each other.
“Buck isn’t my dad, he’s my uncle, silly!” Christopher giggles.
“Oh!” You nod in understanding, “I’m so sorry, I just assumed from how close the two of you seem, and from how many times I’ve seen you at Benny’s together.”
“No problem at all. I don’t have any kids myself, though if I did, I’d be lucky to have one as great as Chris.” Buck grins, ruffling Christopher’s hair affectionately.
“I see.. I can definitely tell he’s a great kid. Well, at least let me pay you back?” You offer, already reaching into your back pocket for your wallet.
“No need, it’s on us.” Buck says quickly, waving his hand.
“Are you sure? Y’all got the flavor right and everything, it's the least I can do.”
“Buck said he notices you get strawberry all the time, so that’s why we picked it for you.” Christopher chirps.
“Oh?” You question curiously, tilting your head to the side at Christopher’s words, as you meet Buck’s gaze. “He noticed, did he?”
Buck immediately looks a bit embarrassed, his cheeks flushing as he brings his hand up to rub the back of his head. “Well, erm yeah, we’ve seen you here before as well, of course.”
There’s something about the way he says it, so adorable and shy, that lets you know, maybe you aren’t the only one whose noticed the other a bit.
Deciding to take a chance, you lean down a bit so you’re at Christopher’s height and whisper to him, “Hey, how would you like to play some games on the pier together, on me? My way of saying thank you for the ice cream.”
Christopher immediately lights up at that. “Yeah! Can we please, Buck?” He exclaims, turning around to face Buck with excitement sparkling in his eyes.
“Of course, bud!” Buck agrees happily, chuckling when Christopher grabs his arm and right away starts pulling him towards the game booths, which are located on the other side of the pier.
“Come on, Y/N!” The boy calls, tossing a look behind him to make sure you’re coming along with them.
You take a bite of your ice cream as you follow, matching Buck’s pace as you do with a smile on your face.
Buck’s blue eyes flicker to yours, eyeing you curiously, “You sure about this? I can get a little competitive, I won’t lie.”
“I think I can handle it. I’ve wasted more than enough money on these booths, but we’ll have to see. Maybe whoever loses the most, has to buy the other more ice cream?” You offer teasingly.
“Hmmm,” Buck humms thoughtfully for a moment, “make it coffee at a nice café where we could get to know each other a bit, and you’re on.”
Your breath hitches in your throat slightly at his words, knowing he was essentially asking you on a date.
His eyes shift away from yours and back to Christopher who is chatting excitedly about which game the three of you should try, but you can tell he’s a bit nervous for your answer.
You wait until Christopher has stopped in front of the booths before stepping a bit closer to Buck and nudging him softly with your shoulder, “You’re on, Buck.”
The shining smile he gives in response might just be the sweetest treat of all.

I’ve been thinking about episode names again recently (thanks May Day and Hero Complex) and finally thought I’d write a little about the topic, more specifically of how the names of the first episodes of a season seem to fit stuff that happens in the final episode of that season as well. I don’t know if someone has already talked about this before but here goes:
Season 1 doesn’t work quite as well here, because the first episode is simply called Pilot, but if we look at the first episode of the season which has a “proper” name then we have 1x02 Let Go, which is what I’ll be looking into here.
Now, in 1x10 we have a couple instances where the Let Go title could also work. The episode opens at Abby’s mom’s funeral, and we get to see the aftermath of her passing. In a sense, this episode is Abby “letting go” of her mom and the life she has in L.A. (sidenote: Abby’s mom died of a pulmonary embolism?? I never caught that before. Interesting. But I digress). Abby also let go of Buck to some degree at the end of the episode as she left (this is a little debatable as she may have thought she would come back eventually but I would argue that at least some part of her let Buck go at the airport).
Then later on we have Athena having to “let go” of May and Harry as they’re going to be spending time (and the night) at Michael’s new place. Then the episode ends with Athena going out with Bobby for the first time which could be seen as her letting go of the family unit that she had with Michael and the kids in order to build a family again but one that looks a little different than what she envisioned when marrying Michael.
So, in this way we have the start of the season bookending with the end of the season (I love it when shows/books/whatever do this, it’s always so delicious), which also seems to happen in the other seasons as well. (Can y’all guess where I’m going with this already?)
Moving on to season 2 and 2x01 which is called Under Pressure. Then in 2x18 we have the package bombs that have a lot of people “under pressure” to figure out who’s sending them and there’s also the threat of where will a bomb go off next. This of course leads to Buck’s leg being crushed under the pressure of the ladder truck.
Then there’s the Diaz parents of it all aka Ramon and Helena putting Eddie under pressure to go back to El Paso now that Shannon has passed and he’s a single parent again. (Sidenote again: Ramon saying “you could choose another one [life]” to our repressed king Eddie? yeah this hurts).
Then in season 3 we have 3x01 Kids Today. This is probably the flimsiest of these but, eh, whatever. Of course, in 3x18 we have the whole “is Christopher old enough to go to camp” discussion which has Bobby commenting that he started to go to camp when he was 8 and could read a little like “well if I could why not the kid today” (like I said, a little flimsy). Then at the end we have May’s graduation party and later we find out that Maddie’s pregnant. This could be a sort of a “one kid grows up, another is about to be born” sort of circle of life thing that includes some kids today (and tomorrow). I don’t know, this doesn’t fit quite as well as the other seasons but it’s sort of there with the focus on kids in both 3x01 and 3x18.
And finally, we have my beloved season 4 with 4x01 being called The New Abnormal. Now, 4x14 doesn’t exactly have a new abnormal in it because we don’t reach it quite yet in the episode, but it certainly puts some things into motion that bring change, namely Eddie telling Buck about the will and everything else surrounding the shooting. (One could argue that Buck knowing about the will does create a new abnormal and I think so too, I just think we see the effects of that better later on than in the episode itself.) Of course, we do have the “new abnormal” for a brief period of time when Buck stays at the Diaz house with Chris when Eddie’s in the hospital, but it doesn’t last very long so I’m not sure it counts. But the wheels for a new (ab)normal are definitely put into motions especially in regards to Buck, Eddie and Chris. Apart from the Buckley-Diazes, we also start to see the severity of Maddie’s post-partum depression in the episode as she quits her job which then leads her, Chimney and Jee into a new (ab)normal.
I think it’s really interesting how we’ve gotten these types of bookends every season in a show that loves its parallels. And I think the show is likely to continue with this (unless they want to break the pattern but I honestly don’t think it will).
So, what does this mean for season 5? I’d put good money on there being panic in some shape or form for one/some character(s) as 5x01 is called Panic if they continue with the bookends they’ve had going on pretty much the whole time. But what the panic looks like remains to be seen. Maybe we’ll get Bobby panicking over May and/or Harry on the heels of the dispatch fire? Eddie dealing with more panic attacks? Buck having a little gay panic? Something totally different? I honestly have no clue. But I think there will be something. And I can’t wait to see whatever it is.

Ah! I love your ideas for Eddie!the-most-controlled-and-loving-cook-in-the-universe. :D In the words of the famous chef: "Delicious! Finally some fucking good food!" :D
you know, I really really loved your "ya filthy animals" and just now, it made me think of how many other ways Christopher can be made to be a little gremlin child. one of which could probably be ringtones.
see, perhaps, if one Evan Buckley falls asleep after lunch, it may just be possible for one sneaky gremlin child to take his phone, unluck it via a facial recognition of the Sleeping Beauty and set the ringtone of one particular contact to "you are... my fiiiiiire. my one.... desiiiiire"
and it sure would be a shame if eddie called buck to help him look for his phone later, wouldn't it 😇
I am so sorry for taking a wee bit to answer this anon but please know i am kissing your closed eyelids before you have a nap with a winter breeze coming through the window but also i've made a hot water bottle for you to cuddle up to. ANYWAY. thank you so much for reading and enjoying ya filthy animals, i love little prankster Christopher so much.
i love your idea. concept, execution, perfection. I counter you however that he changes eddie's phone number, and the eddie who exists in my mind is a technophobic goober and has no idea how to change it back. but he can't put his phone on silent because what if there's an emergency. potential ringtones include: as you correctly said, 'I Want It That Way' by The Backstreet Boys; 'My Best Friend' by Tim McGraw (which Christopher only knows about because it's one Eddie's super secret country music playlist); or 'Sex on Fire' by Kigns of Leon (specifically, the chorus. you know the bit i'm talking about). Even better if Christopher sets it only for Buck's ringtone while everyone else is like, iphone default ringtone #4. anyway buck comes over one night and Christopher hides Eddie's phone and Buck offers to help find it. and Eddie looks at Christopher and Christopher looks back at him because they both know what's about to happen.
Anyway one option is that Buck literally does not even notice it's a big deal because my beloved is a himbo made of self-esteem issues. But he is very in tune to Eddie so immediately notices Eddie is very panicked about the ringtone. (Christopher threw it behind the fridge so like...it's playing for a while.) and then Eddie is like "Christopher is going through a pranking phase." Buck replies, "Uh, yes, obviously, there's been clingfilm on your toilet the past three times I've come over. I have PTSD." And Eddie is kind of relieved and says like, "He thinks it's hilarious to make fun of my feelings for you." Buck: "What feelings." Eddie: "My feelings. You know. You-are-my-fire-my-heart's-desire kind of feelings." And Buck did not know but now he does and he tells Christopher to go to his room right now he needs to kiss his dad.
Also Buck admits, to stop Eddie feeling embarrassed, that he has a spotify playlist literally just full of songs that remind him of Eddie - ranging from gorgeous meaningful acoustic tracks to a pop-punk cover of 'Everytime We Touch' by Cascada, at which point Buck is forced to admit that, like, every song reminds him of Eddie.

I’m sorry you’re in the hospital but I’m glad you’re okay! Here’s a fluffy little head canon for you: Eddie secretly has a huge sweet tooth. He especially loves chocolate and caramel, but he’s not super picky. He always throws in extra junk food in his grocery cart and stashes it away. He doesn’t like to admit that he has such a big sweet tooth, always claims the sweets in his house are for Christopher (who absolutely inherited Eddie’s penchant for desserts), or even throwing Buck under the bus when they get together (even though Buck is actually super healthy).
Buck teases Eddie about his sweet tooth a bit (especially when Eddie burns his finger’s on the cookie sheet Bobby just took out of the oven) but he also loves to bake, so having two very willing tasters in the house is honestly great. He spends a lot of time learning what Eddie and Christopher’s favorite confections are and perfecting them, and even asks Abuela to teach him how to make her Tres Leches cake (Eddie gives it a solid 8/10, because nothing will ever be as good as Abuela’s, but it’s pretty damn close). Buck also bakes for Christopher’s school bake sales (which of course means making an extra batch of cupcakes or cookies or whatever he’s making since Eddie always steals some and then pretends like he doesn’t know where they went even though there’s only two people who could’ve eaten them and Buck knows it wasn’t Christopher)
ahh thank you charlie! ❤ and that is the fluffiest hc ever?? eddie definitely has the biggest sweet tooth, but he has to set a good example for chris and he has an image™ to maintain so he hides it most of the time but there's an entire upper cabinet in the diaz kitchen out of chris' reach full of eddie's secret stash. and buck baking for eddie is my favorite thing ever!! and eddie would definitely be childish enough to steal a cookie or cupcake and then pretend it wasn't him asfdjkl. buck spends time with abuela and she teaches him a bunch of recipes and when eddie finds out he's like??? 'she doesn't even share those recipes with me.' 'that's because you can't be trusted in the kitchen, eddie.' 'hurtful.' and all the moms at chris' bake sales love the stuff buck bakes, and tells eddie that he's so lucky to have a husband who can bake such delicious treats for him and chris. eddie doesn't know how to correct them (nor does he want to) and he just ducks his head shyly and thanks them, and then goes right back to swiping cookies from under buck's nose, earning him the occasional smack on the hand.

ooh for the july prompt list can you do 28 + buddie
For you, darling, anything!
July Prompt List
28. “Just by existing and by letting me speak to you, you give me an immense amount.”
Without Question
“No, no, I’m serious, Eddie.” Buck let his beer slosh over the coffee table as he emphatically pointed at his best friend. He could clean up later; there were more important things happening at the moment. “You, need to get laid.”
On the carpet across from him, Eddie threw his head back in a groan of frustration. “Not this again, Buck, I told you.” He had, in fact, told Buck three times since arriving and subsequently leaving the bar with their friends, but it bared repeating. “I am not interested in hook-ups. I need a relationship – with someone Christopher would approve of.” At least, Eddie hoped that’s what he said (words were a bit fuzzy in his head at the moment). “I don’t need to get laid; I need to get married.”
That seemed to sober Buck just a little, his mouth drooping downwards. “You’re ready to get married again?”
Eddie found himself doing his best impression of that singing bass (weren’t brains funny at 3am?), thinking of the right answer. “No. Yes? Maybe. I hadn’t really thought about it but yeah” he eventually decided. “If I’m going to put myself out there again, it’s going to be with someone I can see a future with.”
“How are you supposed to know that on a first date?” Very good question, Buck. Eddie’s face scrunched in on itself as he sought the answer.
“I don’t know that I know what it would look like to meet that person.” Buck’s eyes were really blue when his face was red from too much alcohol. They were like an ocean in a storm. What?
“Okay.” Buck slammed his bottle onto the coffee table with so much force, it shattered their eardrums but he was already crawling to his feet.
He was halfway into the kitchen when Eddie finally realized that Buck was gone and called out “where did you go?”
Suddenly Buck was back where he started (had he even left?) throwing himself to the ground, now with a pen and a piece of what looked like old mail. “That looks important.”
“This is important-er” Buck insisted, leaning his weight against the edge of the table, giving his full attention to the paper stuffed under his forearm. “We’re going to figure this out.”
“Figure what out?”
Buck rolled his eyes and nearly hit his head on the table in the process. Should they really be doing this now? Well, if not now, then when?
“We’re going to figure out the perfect person for you” he declared with the confidence of a man who would have a splitting headache and a few bruises in the morning.
“You have a rolodex of every person on the planet that we can go through?” Eddie scoffed, taking another ill-advised drink.
Buck stared at Eddie too long for either of them to properly see straight, eyes forced wide before he inevitably fell asleep. “A rolodex? What are you, fifty?” Before he could process Buck’s words, they were moving on. “No, we’re going to write down exactly what you’re looking for in a partner, so that when you do meet someone, you’ll know they’re the one.”
Seemed reasonable enough. Buck was so smart sometimes, but sometimes he was an idiot (like that time he tried to pet a dog after they found it covered in – what they thought at the time was – blood. It turned out to be ketchup from where his owner had collapsed from a heart attack in the middle of making lunch). Buck was probably the dumbest smart person he knew. But in a really smart way.
“Okay.” Eddie leaned forward to match his friend’s position across the coffee table. “What’s first?”
Buck squinted at the paper, waiting for it to reveal its secrets. Just as quickly, he perked up and began to scribble.
“Number one: good looking.”
Eddie scoffed, wiping his spit from the table with his sleeve. “Why is that the first thing on the list?”
“Because” Buck drew out emphatically. “The whole goal is to get you laid. If you don’t find them attractive, then this whole experiment is for not.”
It was Eddie’s turn to roll his eyes so hard he felt dizzy. “Now who’s fifty?”
In lieu of a response, Buck went back to his scribbling. “Number two: they have to love Christopher.”
“That is an absolute must.” Anyone he was with had to love Christopher the way Buck did – with his whole heart. He really was a great person.
“Three: someone who understands your schedule. Being a firefighter is not a 9-5 thing; they have to be prepared for late nights and crazy danger.” Buck’s face twisted as he wrote, into something Eddie recognized as hurt. It took him a little longer to realize why that sadness was marring that pretty face. He slowly reached out a hand to touch his wrist. Buck shouldn’t feel like he was alone, or that Ali leaving was his fault. He deserved to know that there was someone who wanted to be with him – despite the schedules and the dangers. His eyes really were so perfectly blue; even when they were starring at him hopefully. Especially then.
Eddie opened his mouth but nothing came out so he closed it again, hoping the lack of oxygen would help him remember. He didn’t remove his hand right away.
Buck spent the next forty minutes emphatically telling Eddie exactly what his ideal person would be, with Eddie adding commentary here and there to make sure Buck got the wording right (maybe, things were still a bit hazy).
At the end of everything, there were ten items on the list. Ten items for the perfect partner for Eddie. Now all he had to do was find that person. He stared at Buck, proudly handing Eddie the paper for him to tuck into his back pocket, and something of a smile rose to his lips. Finding that person would be the easy part, thought Drunk Eddie. All he had to do was remember the list and even his sober counter-part (as obtuse as he was – excellent word choice, Drunk Eddie) would able to figure it out.
Just to be sure, Eddie waited until Buck stumbled towards the bathroom for the third time, before he retrieved the list from his back pocket and added an eleventh item.
There. Easy as pie.
Thoughts of delicious, sugar-filled pastries, had Eddie stumbling up the stairs to the master bathroom. Why did he think getting drunk at Hen’s birthday party was a good idea? He was not in his twenties anymore. This shit had consequences.
Of course, he expected those consequences to be a massive hangover and some second-hand embarrassment (which he did have). What he wasn’t expecting, was to wake up with his arm around the waist of a half-naked Buck.
Well that was new.
The soft smile on his face as he watched Buck’s even breathing, so calm and safe, was also…not that new. Certainly not one he’d ever experienced while sleeping shirtless in his best friend’s bed, obviously; but being happy that Buck was peaceful and all right was something Eddie experienced on a daily basis.
He carefully pulled his arm away from that – surprisingly soft – abdomen, and rolled onto his back as naturally as he could without waking the other man. If Buck woke up to them cuddling like that, there might need to be a discussion about why he felt so comfortable like that; and morning afters were not the time for existential wanderings.
Not that this was a ‘morning after’. It was the morning after a night of heavy drinking and clearly neither of them were fit to drive, let alone sleep on the couch without hurting themselves. Buck’s bed was big enough for two grown men to rest comfortably (not that they seemed to be using half of the space) so it made sense that they would share.
Yup, perfectly reasonable. Anything else – like his heart beating out of his chest with longing – was just an aftershock of the abhorrent amount of alcohol they’d consumed.
Who thought any of that was a good idea?
Oh right. Christopher was away at camp and Buck had dragged him to Hen’s birthday party; where she’d loudly declared that for one damn night, she wanted to celebrate everything she’d accomplished with her closest friends, consequences be damned. Which, of course, meant that several rounds of tequila shots were ordered in honor of the birthday girl. He vaguely recalled Karen getting exasperatedly drunk beside her wife, which encouraged Eddie to drink his loneliness away. Which seemed to have led back to Buck’s apartment.
There were definitely some dots missing there.
Namely, why he’d let himself sleep in his jeans but not his shirt (in Buck’s bed!).
Before he could even attempt to make connections, the body beside him began to stir, and the peaceful rest on Buck’s face soured into disgruntled pain.
“What died in my mouth?” He chewed on the words as they left his lips, leaving Eddie to dodge a few flailing limbs as Buck returned to the living. A few more scrapes of his tongue against his teeth seemingly had Buck satisfied that he wouldn’t get the taste out of his mouth without help, so he rolled over to check the time on his phone, only to find a body in the way.
“Eddie?” he groaned against the morning light through his window. “What are you doing here?”
The firefighter tried to shake his head but found it only made his stomach protest harder than it had been already. “We are too old to be drinking this much” he hoarsely declared.
Buck’s reply was swallowed by his retreating form as he stumbled towards the bathroom to empty the contents of his bad decision. Eddie let his head fall back against the pillow, the only sounds in the apartment becoming Buck’s retching, and Eddie’s painful decision to forget everything about last night.
Stumbling through the door of his bedroom a few hours later (Buck had insisted on taking him out for a greasy breakfast before dropping him off at home), Eddie had just enough mental energy to toss his clothes vaguely near the hamper before jumping in the shower and then straight to bed. He had never been so grateful for a day off in his life.
Much like the night before, Eddie remembered very little of the day he slept away; those 24 hours became a blip in the string of time that carried no real significance in his life and was happily forgotten.
When doing laundry a few days later, he did find a piece of Buck’s mail folded into the back pocket of his jeans. So, he tossed it onto the ever-growing pile of things on his dining room table colloquially called ‘things that need to be returned to Buck’s eventually’, and thought nothing of it.
It would be another month before Eddie thought about the letter or the night that time forgot.
Hosting random get-togethers for the firefighters and paramedics of the 118 (along with their families, of course) was practically a bi-weekly tradition at this point. Whoever was available would offer their space, and everyone was welcomed in, bringing food and drinks and games. It was one of Eddie’s favourite things about being a part of the 118: the inherent companionship. He had never been a part of anything where it was just assumed that he would have a babysitter, or someone to barbeque for two dozen people in his backyard, or drive him to the hospital when his grandmother broke her hip. No matter what was going on, they could always rely on each other.
He loved the family he’d built at the 118.
So what if he was a little lonely sometimes; he was never alone and that was just as good. Still, maybe it was time for him to put himself out there again. The idea of dating – of random hookups and dead-end dinners – felt exhausting (and not at all what he needed). What else could he do, though?
Luckily, it was his turn to host, so no matter how he was feeling, it would soon be replaced with joy and contentment and laughter. But first, he needed to clean up.
As was tradition, Eddie grabbed the pile of things on his table lovingly titled ‘things that should get back to Buck’s but likely never will’ and shoved them onto his bed until their guests had left for the evening. One of these days, he would remember to tell Buck about all the things of his that had accumulated at the Diaz house over the years (a spare charger, a hat, a few bits of mail he would bring over when he was helping Eddie with tax season – or Eddie was helping him, they weren’t really sure). Small things that might not be missed, but also a spare tooth brush, a pair of sweatpants, and a book he’d only ever seen Buck read at his dining room table while Christopher did his homework.
Maybe he should just get Buck a drawer for his things and then he wouldn’t have to lug it around every time he had company over.
The doorbell rang, sending Eddie sprinting to throw everything onto his bed so he could answer the door in a timely manner.
He loved having a full house. It made everything feel lived in. Sure, he strived to ensure that Christopher’s room (and any room his son spent a lot of time in) was warm and inviting. But there was something about 20 people crammed into the small sections of his house, filling the air with love, that made his house feel like home.
It also meant that there was a mess everywhere. He really didn’t mind it – part of having a big family was accepting that there would be a mess sometimes. With so many little ones running around, however (especially one who wasn’t so steady on his feet), it was best to keep the floors and corners tidy as much as possible.
That was when Eddie noticed a folded-up piece of paper on the floor of the hallway leading to his bedroom. It must have been a some of Buck’s mail that fell when he ran to get the door. An easy enough fix. Curiously, he unfolded the paper for the first time, just to see if it was something important.
Just a flier for some new gym Buck was on the mailing list for. Nothing special.
He turned it over to see the writing on the back, expecting contact info for a trainer or something equally relevant.
1.       Someone good looking (you have to want to bone them or it’s all for not don’t make fun of me for using that phrase it’s rude)
He recognized Buck’s messy handwriting straight away. What he couldn’t remember was why he’d written some sort of list on the back.
2.       Someone who loves Christopher (obviously that kid is your whole world so he has to be theirs too)
Okay, so this had something to do with Christopher, it probably had something to do with Eddie, too.
3.       Someone who understands your schedule/lifestyle (your job is important to you and you need someone who gets that)
Eddie stared at the page, memories of too much tequila and not enough inhibitions flooded back to him.
4.       Someone who will make you a priority (you need to make you a priority too you know)
Buck had written him a list of things he should be looking for in a partner, that much he remembered now. The commentary scrawled beside the list, however, was new.
5.       Someone kind (you’re so kind you need someone whose just as kind and appreciates your kindness because you’re so kind)
Eddie found himself dragging his feet towards the sounds of people, eyes still glued to the page.
6.       Someone smart (not like a doctor or anything but you have to be able to hold a conversation obviously)
He’d laid it out so simply that night; told Eddie exactly the type of person who would make him happy. How could Buck know that?
7.       Someone loyal (you deserve someone as loyal as you Eddie you stick by people even when they’re awful jerks who almost screwed up the best thing they ever had)
Eddie couldn’t breathe, head buzzing with the sincerity in Buck’s words, even sloppily written on the back of a flier.
8.       Someone who makes you laugh (I wish you could laugh more I like your laugh)
Someone called out to him – maybe the real Buck – but he was trapped in the memories of this world of possibilities.
9.       Someone who can read you (not read to you idiot you need someone who knows what your face means because you don’t always say things out loud but you do say a lot)
The new voice was in front of him now, reaching out to him, trying to pull him to the present, but he refused to leave.
10.   Someone who makes you feel safe (you make me feel safe)
And there it was; the list of qualities for Eddie’s perfect partner. The person who he could marry – because he remembered telling Buck that he wanted someone he could marry (that’s where the list had originated). It seemed an impossible task to find someone who fit all ten items on the list.
And yet.
Underneath it all, Eddie recognized his own handwriting, as messy as it was. The note he’d written himself so Sober Eddie would remember who it was that fit every criterion.
11.   Someone who’ll stay
When he finally found the strength to raise his eyes to meet the real Buck’s, he was breathless all over again. The concern, the absolute care on his face, tipped Eddie over the edge.
“It’s you.”
Buck ducked his head but didn’t physically retreat; he was still so close, all-encompassing – the same way he’d ingratiated himself into the Diaz family long ago.
“What’s me?”
Wordless, Eddie presented the list for Buck to read. He watched the journey of emotions play through like a slideshow from confusion, to embarrassment, to realization, to confusion once again, mixed with painfully unending hope.
“I didn’t mean me when I wrote this.”
How had he not seen it before? How could Eddie have been so blind?
“But I do.” His eyes really were like the ocean, weren’t they. Even sober, he could stare into them forever.
“Marry me?”
Buck’s chest expanded with the weight of Eddie’s question, eyes wide in a disbelief that made him feel giddy; knowing Buck was just as stunned by these turn of events as he was. The fact that neither of them had run away screaming in horror, had to be a good sign.
“What the hell is going on?”
In hindsight, Eddie should have known better than to have his earth-shattering realization in front of their friends and family. Everyone was too nosey for their own good. Just because he’d suddenly proposed to Buck despite the fact that they were not dating.
He’d just proposed to Buck despite the fact that they weren’t dating.
Athena called out to the boys again when neither answered. “Does someone want to clue me in?”
Buck turned back to Eddie, a calm smile on his face – the same peace that he’d had when they were lying in bed together (visions of memorizing his sleeping face filled his hope to the brim).
“Eddie and I are getting married.” Buck spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear, but his announcement was just for Eddie. The only word he had left to describe his beating heart was ‘disbelief’.
He’d just proposed to Buck despite the fact that they weren’t dating. And he’d said yes.
He should be more panicked. He should run away screaming. Ask to take it all back. What the hell was he thinking? Asking his best friend to marry him because of a list that seemed too good to be true. Just because Buck ticked every box that said they were perfect for each other. Just because Buck wanted him back, just as deliriously.
How could he not embrace it all?
The noises that erupted from their family was drowned out by the thrumming of his heart when Buck pulled him in for a kiss punctuated by the infectious laughter bubbling in his chest.
The list floated to the floor as Eddie wrapped both arms around his fiancé (holy shit, he had a fiancé), to be retrieved after everyone had gone home. Buck and Eddie would talk about everything – sit Christopher down with them to make sure he was as happy as he seemed as well – and the list would eventually make its way to their bedside table.
On their first anniversary, Eddie would present it to Buck in a frame, and they would hang it in their bedroom as a reminder of the night their drunken selves figured out what it took them years to discover.
Their perfect partner.

 THE SIGHTS OF CHRISTMAS
They’re going to be late, Eddie realizes as he glances at the clock in the dashboard/panel behind the steering wheel. He hopes that they’ll be late enough that everyone is already deep in conversation or too engaged in their drinks, food, or the music to pay much attention to them entering, so he can just set down Chris with the other kids and silently slide onto the bench next to Buck who’ll greet him with a soft smile.
Finally, he pulls up in front of the karaoke bar, taking note of the nicely decorated tree someone has put up next to the entrance. On the other side, they’ve put a giant blown-up Santa Claus and Eddie can’t help but shiver. It’s a nice idea that Chimney came up with, suggesting that they all get together at his and Maddie’s favorite karaoke bar for the Christmas themed family evening on their free day. He’s heard a lot of good things about it from Buck, who Eddie knows has been there with them already. Eddie just wishes he were in a better mood to enjoy it today. Which is one of the reasons why he’d like his team and their families not to pay too close attention to him.
He sighs, putting his car into park and turning the key in the ignition. He turns back to look at Chris in the backseat. Seeing his son looking outside with excitement in his eyes lifts his mood a little. He hopes Chris has fun tonight, even if he doubts that’ll apply to himself.
They have to pass the creepy Santa figure to get inside but once they do, Eddie finds that the decorations become a lot more tasteful. There are colorful lights, mostly, but also a few small Christmas trees in the corners. The music is turned lower in benefit of the children and the bar and the tables are lined with fir branches interspersed with ornaments in silver and red. Eddie likes it.
Chris moves away from him, prompting him to do the same but not waiting on him. Eddie follows Chris’s line of sight and sure enough, they’re all there already, sitting, talking, eating, and drinking at one of the tables. Two, no, three tables, pushed together.
It looks cozy, all of them huddled closely together on the chairs and benches surrounding the tables. Like a family, Eddie can’t help but think. It’s a thought he’s been having a lot lately. And he enjoys this little family that they made for themselves amongst the team.
 THE SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS
There’s still place on the bench right next to Buck. Eddie exhales in relief when he notices. Buck’s talking to Karen and Chimney but his eyes move through the room when he isn’t talking. Eddie doesn’t think they’re searching for something in particular but still, they lock onto Eddie’s as soon as they find them. Buck’s face breaks into a wide smile and he waves Eddie over to sit next to him. As if Eddie would choose to sit anywhere else.
He slides into the free seat and gets their group's attention as soon as they realize that Buck’s focus has shifted away from their conversation.
Chimney exclaims: “The lost son has returned!” the table erupting in laughter. It’s too much attention for the way Eddie is feeling today but Buck is still smiling at him, making it a lot more bearable.
“You came just in time. Athena and Hen are taking the stage to sing.”
Eddie lets his eyes wander across the room, taking note of the karaoke set up on the stage where, as Chimney said, Athena and Hen are picking up the microphones and getting ready to sing.
The music starts to come out of the speakers and it only takes Eddie a few seconds to recognize it.
 “Is that      ‘Feliz Navidad’    ?”
Buck laughs, letting his head fall onto Eddie’s shoulder. “Just wait what the others have chosen,” he murmurs in Eddie’s ear, careful that no one else hears it.
“So bad?” Eddie can’t help the smile that spreads over his lips. He finds that Athena’s and Hen’s singing voices might actually be good if they weren’t spending most of the time trying not to laugh. It’s lifting Eddie’s mood considerably seeing the two of them goofing off on stage.
“Not bad, just… you’ll see what I mean.” Buck nudges him with his leg. “You wanna order something in the meantime?”
Eddie looks over to where Chris is sitting with the other kids and takes note of the full glass already in front of him.
It seems nothing escapes Buck’s notice because he’s following Eddie’s line of sight and sighs, nudging him again. “Relax, they know not to serve the kids any alcohol.” He smiles. “Besides, he’s a responsible boy, he’ll probably only order soda the whole evening.”
 “That’s what I’m worried about.”
Buck laughs again. “We’ll make him sing a few songs at the karaoke machine and once you leave you won’t even notice his sugar high anymore.”
Eddie pretends to weigh the pros and cons of it but figures he can allow Chris an evening of way too sugary beverages.
Buck reaches for the menu and sets it down in front of him. While Eddie is sifting through the options, the last few notes play and Athena and Hen are leaving the stage. They are greeted by cheers and whoops from their group, accompanied by a few laughs, most of all Hen herself. There’s the sound of rustling of coats and scarves and bags all around and Eddie thinks it’s too much to be just from the two of them sitting back down. Looking up, he manages to catch Maddie grabbing Chimney’s hand on their way to the other end of the bar.
“Another one of ours?” Eddie directs towards Buck who only chuckles.
Eddie contemplates if Buck is already tipsy or if he’s just happy today. He hopes it’s the latter and not all of it is due to selfish reasons like liking the sound of his laugh.
Eddie doesn’t expect anything but a pretty good performance of the two of them after what he’s heard from Buck’s retellings but still, the performance blows him away. Their love and coordination translate directly to how their voices work together and harmonize. It’s obvious that they have some practice.
The song on the other hand…
“It’s very cliché,” Eddie admits just as Chimney’s belting “but this year I’ll give it to someone special”.
“Isn’t it a breakup song though?”
 Karen snorts.
“Don’t say that so loud,” Buck says, barely containing his grin, “and don’t tell them.”
 Eddie motions zipping his lips.
“I thought it was about finding new love after a breakup,” Karen chimes in, “and that’s rather fitting, isn’t it?”
Buck points a finger at Karen like she’s made a good point. Which she has, Eddie must admit. It      does     seem rather fitting when you look at it that way.
 THE SMELLS OF CHRISTMAS
He takes note of the menu that’s still in front of him. He’s skimming through the options again, just as clueless about what to get as he was before.
“What are you drinking?” he finally asks Buck.
“Oh, mulled wine,” Buck slides his mug over, “you can try some.”
Eddie lifts the mug. Long before it touches his lips, he’s already assaulted by the smell of cloves, orange, and cinnamon above the slightly acidic smell of wine. It smells good, and once he nips at it, it tastes just as well, but he knows he won’t drink any more of it.
“Oh, you need to drive,” Buck remembers, pulling the mug back. “Apparently the hot chocolate is not too bad here, if you want something festive.”
 Eddie nods. “Sounds good.”
Just then, a waiter comes up to their table, leaving a few platters of food behind. It smells delicious, and Eddie’s thinking of getting something to eat too. But he’ll ask Chris about it first. For now, he merely catches the waiter before he leaves and asks him if he can order a drink.
Buck digs into his own plate, as do all those who have ordered food. It’s quieter once half of their table is eating, but the conversation is still lively and Eddie notices that he doesn’t mind any longer. They’re his family, and even if he arrived not feeling well, he enjoys their company enough to be in a slightly less foul mood.
 THE TASTES OF CHRISTMAS
“You want some?” Buck asks and lifts his fork in Eddie’s direction.
It’s instinct, really, nothing he actively thinks about when he opens his mouth and bites into the brown mass sticking to Buck’s fork. The chocolate is melting on his tongue, sweet and soft. Eddie wants to ask for more until his brain catches up.
 “Is that fudge?”
 Buck grins.
“You eat fudge with a fork?”
Buck’s brows furrow in confusion and it’s cute. Eddie stifles a laugh.
He feels like Buck would follow this up with a remark of his own if the waiter hadn’t interrupted them by bringing Eddie’s mug. If he were at home he would’ve put more marshmallows than he got but it’s still enough to melt into the cocoa and alter the taste. There’s a hint of cinnamon too. After taking a few sips of his own, he dutifully slides it over to Buck. It’s only fair after Buck shared his own with him.
“Mhm,” Buck sighs, “it really is good.”
“Don’t finish my drink. Leave some for me.”
Buck turns to him with a twinkle in his eyes.
But Eddie doesn’t get to hear what he meant to say, for Chris appears on his other side with a question on his lips.
“I forgot my bag in the car.”
Ok, it’s not exactly a question, but Eddie still hears it loud and clear.
“I’ll get it for you, mijo,” he says, already reaching for his coat.
“I’m coming with you,” Buck joins in and sure enough, he follows Eddie when he excuses himself from the table and soon the two of them find themselves outside of the bar.
 THE TOUCH OF CHRISTMAS
The air is still as cold as it was when they arrived earlier, sending a chill through Eddie despite the fact he's wearing a coat. It annoys him that he even has to wear one at all.
“You think we’ll have some snow this year?” he can’t help but ask.
Buck shrugs. “None that would stay on the ground.”
“Hm.” Eddie clicks his car keys. “Chris would love it anyway. And if it doesn’t stay on the ground, even better. That would be a rough shift.”
Buck laughs, leaning onto the top of the car door once Eddie opens it. “Can you imagine working somewhere up north like New York?”
"Work would be hell during winter,” Eddie agrees. He grabs Chris’ backpack from between the seats and goes to close the door again. The metal feels icy. He clicks his keys again before looking up at Buck expectantly. There’s something weird happening on Buck’s face, Eddie can tell.
“Are we missing another performance?” he asks instead, neither of them leaving their place.
At that, Buck comes alive again, scratching his neck. “I’m not sure. I lost track.”
 “Did you sing already?”
“Why?” A dangerous glint appears in Buck’s eyes, “you wanna sing with me?”
“No,” Eddie laughs, “I’d rather leave with my dignity still intact.”
“Come on, Eddie. We’re gonna sing ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ and you can let out all your frustration over the cold weather.”
Eddie levels him with a glare but he feels that he doesn’t quite mean it. And Buck knows it if the grin on his face is any indication.
“I’m not frustrated with the cold weather,” Eddie deflects, “and that’s not what that song is about.”
Buck smirks. “So what song would you rather we sing? ‘Driving home for Christmas'? ‘Santa Baby’? But we’re not singing the ‘Santa Buddy’ version.”
“Oh God no,” Eddie groans, “none of them. What about ‘All I want for Christmas is You’?”
Buck gapes at him. “That’s your choice?”
 Eddie shrugs.
“I thought ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ was too romantic for you, and you’re choosing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’?”
 Eddie smiles. “I don’t mind.”
He starts to move back towards the bar but when Buck doesn’t seem to follow him, he grabs Buck’s hand. It’s cold, and Eddie might be frustrated with the cold weather after all. But this time Buck follows him back inside.

In the morning light
Part 2 of The Great Outdoors fic - read part one here.
Summary: A new day brings new opportunities.
***
The morning sun was warming up the tent in a beautiful glow that Eddie wanted to bask in for a while. He woke up before the other two.
First, he checked in with his son as he always did. Christopher was wrapped up like a caterpillar in its cocoon, buried deep within his sleeping bag. Then Eddie’s focus turned to Buck. His best friend was fast asleep like his son, except he had kicked all of his blankets off and was on top of his bag. His lips were parted softly, and the sun was hitting his profile just right. The guy was beautiful. Eddie stared at him longer than he wanted to admit. But he couldn’t help it. Sometime during the night, he had woken up and noticed he was holding hands with Buck. He had managed somehow to move his sleeping bag closer to Buck’s during his sleep. The two of them had been so close, that Eddie could feel the warmth coming off of his strong body. He had wanted nothing more than to kiss Buck at that moment, sliding into his friend’s sleeping bag, so he could embrace more than just his hand. He wanted to hold him in his arms, kissing his neck as he acknowledged they would have every day to do this. That’s what he had wanted. They were spread out a bit further apart in the morning when Eddie had opened his eyes a second time. But his hand still hummed with the promise of what could be.
***
Buck felt good, like really good, as he stretched. One should probably not feel that good after sleeping on the hard ground all night. But he did. It was probably because he was able to hold Eddie in his arms during the night. He had woken up holding Eddie’s hand still, yet what was more, was the fact that Eddie had somehow gotten closer to them. Buck had maneuvered in such a way, that he was up close to Eddie. It wasn’t everything, but it was enough. Now he was waking up to an empty tent. But that’s when he heard Christopher’s laugh from outside of the tent. God, he could get used to them, the three of them. The family of his dreams. Buck put a pair of sweat bottoms on and a sweatshirt to block the brisk morning air. Eddie was no longer around to keep him warm, so he had to make do with what he had… even though it didn’t compare. Christopher and Eddie were by the portable grill making what appeared and smelled like a delicious breakfast. “Look at that!” Eddie looked over and Buck’s heart pounded, the way it always seemed to do lately around the guy. “Someone’s finally awake. Thought you were going to sleep the day away.” “What can I say,” Buck said with a grin, “there’s something about this mountain air that rejuvenates me.” “Oh, I’ll agree with that,” Eddie nodded, taking some hash browns into his mouth. Buck couldn’t help watch the way his lips move around his fingers, and he flushed from the sight of it. “So, what are we cookin’ up here boys?” Christopher looked over at Buck and smiled, “Eggs, hash browns, and bacon! I even let dad crack the eggs!” “Yikes, a bit unwise, my friend. You sure that was a good idea?” Chris laughed as he pushed around the scrambled eggs, while Eddie secretly slipped him the middle finger. “You’re quite the little chef, buddy,” Buck said as he ruffled Christopher’s hair slightly. “Smells delicious. Can I get a sample of some bacon?” “Here.” Eddie reached down to grab a piece and then hovered it over Buck’s mouth. His best friend raised an eyebrow and his mouth twitched with a hint of a smile. Buck opened his mouth as the delicious bacon hit his tongue. “Mmm, that’s some good bacon!” He tried to ignore the thrill he felt at Eddie feeding him and failed miserably. There seemed to be some sort of unspoken connection just then between the two of them. Buck couldn’t help but wonder, if Eddie felt something more, too. *** Another day was coming and going rapidly, but Eddie was enjoying every moment with his boys. They had enjoyed breakfast telling stories of the weird dreams they had the night before and decided to explore the wilderness surrounding them. Up the trail they went, spotting colorful birds, and beautiful flowers and trees. They went slowly, as to not push Chris too far, but once again, his son impressed them both by taking the lead. Christopher’s eyes captured the wonder of everything he saw. It was breathtaking to witness. As the evening sun was setting, they settled in with their music and dinner. Buck and Christopher, we’re playing a round of Go Fish, and Eddie was catching up on the latest chapter in his book. However, he paused and took it all in. Why did this feel so… natural? Maybe that’s how it felt with a best friend, one who had your back. But this was all he had ever wanted in life. Something that felt...effortless. They could just be in the moment so well, minding their own business yet feeling the peace of being together. It had never quite felt like this before. He’d always felt like anxiety bloomed beneath the surface, wanting desperately to escape. Now he wanted to do anything but escape. If this was all there was to be between them, then that was okay. But Eddie couldn’t help but hope for a bit more. *** Eddie was reading Chris a bedtime story in the tent, while Buck sat by the fire, drinking a beer, and feeling a whirlwind of thoughts. This little getaway was so eye-opening on what life could be like. A preview of contentment and happiness of ease. It was all he had ever wanted. When Chris was asleep, Eddie emerged from the tent, zipping it shut. He made his way over and Buck handed him a beer. “Thanks, man.” “Yup.” Eddie sighed, “I don’t want to leave in the morning.” “Me neither. But duty calls.” “Yeah,” Eddie nodded. “It sure does.” “I just hope Chim isn’t making a mess of things,” Buck sighed with a grin. “But I’m sure Hen will keep him covered.” “As long as he doesn’t borrow my cologne in my locker, I’d say he’ll be alright,” Eddie laughed shaking his head slightly. “That would be a sin to steal that. You smell too good! Believe me, I’ve noticed.” Whoops. The words had left Buck’s mouth before he had realized what he’d said. He noticed Eddie stiffen next to him, but took a swig. Buck tried to play it cool even though he wanted to kick himself, “I just mean, when you work with a guy you get close to him and—“ “Buck,” Eddie winked, “you don’t need to explain it. It’s the truth. I am a good smelling guy.” Buck laughed with ease as he released a sigh. These feelings were toying with everything, weren’t they? It was making him on edge 24/7. “Better than a guy named John that I used to work with. Phew.” They both laughed and talked about stupid stuff, but the conversation Buck really wanted to have with the guy, was scared to come out...ironically. Dammit. Eddie yawned, and Buck rubbed a hand on his head, “I’m looking forward to sleep. I meant it, I slept so damn good last night.” “I could tell,” Eddie replied as he clasped his hands together. “You were sound asleep when I woke up in the night.” “Yeah,” Buck said, taking a bit of a risk, “I noticed we were holding hands when I woke up. Our little handshake must’ve stayed glued that way because we were both out like the log Chris wanted in the fire.” He laughed without humor feeling the nerves tingle his body. Eddie looked over at him, “I think that’s why I felt so at ease last night. I must’ve, um, scooted closer or something in my sleep.” “What can I say? I’m irresistible when asleep.” Buck shrugged, playing it cool as he wiggled his eyebrows up-and-down. “When you’re awake, too.” Buck gasped and looked at Eddie. His eyes were wide. Had Eddie just said…. “Listen, I need to talk to you,” Eddie pressed further. “It’s something that’s recently come up and I… I’m just trying to figure out what to do about it. This whole time away I’ve wanted too and I think it’s time.” Buck was frozen but somehow managed to nod. Could he be talking about what Buck was hoping he’d say? “I don’t want to ruin what we have here, you’re my best friend. So I don’t want things to change.” Buck looked down at his feet. So Eddie could sense what he was feeling but didn’t want that…he didn’t know whether to talk or cry at that moment. “But…” Buck’s head moved up slightly. Eddie cleared his throat as if he were nervous, “I have feelings for you, Buck. Deep feelings and I get this probably feels out of the blue or somethin’, but I just thought it was important you knew.” Buck was lucky he could find his voice, “It’s not out of the blue.” “It’s not?” Eddie replied with what looked like to be hope. Buck shook his head, “No. It’s been like this for me for a very long time. I wanted to tell you so many times, especially on this camping trip, but I was afraid...really afraid.” “So…what you’re saying is that you like me, too?” Taking a deep breath, and gently reaching over to hold Eddie’s hand once more, he said, “I’m saying that I'm in love with you, Eddie.” Eddie’s face lit up in the most beautiful way, “Really?” “Yes,” Buck nodded, “really. I fell so hard around the time we started getting close. I tried to push it away because of fear, but I don’t want to hide it anymore. I love you and I love Chris. Being around you both, it’s a sense of family. You’re my family.” “You’re our family, too,” Eddie said, leaning in slightly to touch Buck’s face. His skin warmed from the gentle touch and his eyes flickered shut slowly. “I was scared to express how I felt because I didn’t want to lose that.” “You’ll never lose me.” Eddie’s eyes filled with tears, “Good, because I don’t think either of us,” he motioned towards the tent, “could handle that.” “I’m not going anywhere,” Buck reassured as he touched Eddie’s hand still cradling his face. “I love you, too, ya know,” Eddie whispered with such clarity. “It all clicks together when I’m with you.” Buck couldn’t believe this was happening. He felt like he was floating in the sky among the stars they had wished on the previous night. “I’m not dreaming, am I? I was pretty damn comfortable by the fire just now. I could be asleep.” “You’re not asleep, I promise,” Eddie replied with a laugh. Buck smiled slowly, “Prove it?” “Gladly.” Eddie closed the distance between them, and their lips gently pushed together. Buck immediately felt the fire within him blaze brightly. This was what felt right. This was what he had been waiting for. It all made sense now. The kiss deepened and their lips moved together in harmony like the stream moving through the rocks. It was perfect in every way. That night as they slept in their sleeping bags, they held each other and this time, it was on purpose.

YOU ARE MADE OF STARDUST
(Part 1/?)
Evan: I'm craving for cheesecake. I'm going out to get some. Do you want any?
Eddie is helping Hen stocking up the ambulance after their last call depleted 'em dry when the notification came in. His eyebrows shot up after reading the message.
Eddie: You know you are not allowed to drive yet. I'll get you some later.
Evan: :( But the doctor said I'm clear for light activities. I'm driving. Not running there. :<
Eddie: Which is still a bad idea with your condition.
Evan: But I'm dying for a cheesecake. How could you. :(
Eddie: You will not die from a cheesecake craving.
Evan: Meanie. I'll have the bed for myself tonight. >:(

Eddie can't help but to let his eyes roll so far, he thinks he saw his brain back there. He can actually hears how Buck is huffing in displeasure right now, looking like a kicked giant golden-retriever. He knows Buck is joking with the "d" word, but after experiencing how near death is always lurking around, the word just send shudders to his spine.
He can hear Hen snorts in amusement beside him. "Already looking for trouble, that husband of yours?" Hen teases in mirth.
Eddie just shakes his head in resignation. "According to him, he's dying for a cheesecake and wanted to drive out to get some. And now I'm the bad person for not allowing him to." Eddie rants, hands swinging around to make his point.
Eddie understands the house rests are driving Buck crazy. Not allowed to do everything he usually does himself must be frustrating. If anything, Eddie is actually proud with his husband for not throwing much tantrum in the course of his healing. Eddie's eyes proceed to linger on his phone's wallpaper, the recent image of Buck and Chris snuggled in their blanket fort acts as a reminder for him that Buck is still here.
Hen, blessed the patron of observance that she is, notices how Eddie's facial expression suddenly falls. She gingerly moves closer to Eddie, patting his back in an consoling motion. "Eddie. Buck is okay. Little scratch there, but he is fine." Hen enunciates to Eddie slowly, like she usually would when comforting the distressed victims during calls.
That makes the wall Eddie has build so thick and high crumbling down.
"But he almost not be." Eddie chokes on tears. "He almost leave us, Hen. Buck almost died." Eddie swallows the bitter taste on his tongue. Oh God. Saying that out loud just make the whole ordeal more concrete. More tangible than Eddie had previously perceived. He was in a state of constant obscurity after the doctor delivered the news when Buck was admitted to the hospital. Feeling like the color of the world seeped out from the corner of his eyes, leaving only grayish fog in his view.
Hen is now hugging Eddie, letting him to cry out his burden away. "Hey now. It's okay. Everything will be just fine."
"But what if it's not? I kissed another woman on the night before he collapsed, Hen." Eddie admits. He never tell anybody about that night, too ashamed of himself. But also afraid of the judgment that may come with it.
Hen stalled. Her face morphes in confusion.
"But isn't that the night of the parents-teachers conference?" Hen frowns, recalling her memory to that day. It's not like Eddie goes to a bar or something.
Eddie nods weakly.
"Who?" Hen queries. Her face returns back to neutral and it make Eddie queasy in his stomach even more.
"Ana."
Oh boy. Hen knows Buck is insecure about Shannon, uncomfortable with the thought that he is replacing her in the Diaz's household. Hen also knows other women that Buck are still insecure about are Lena and Ana, both of different reasons but it is not her place to say.
"Have you talk about it?" Hen then pries. She is still regretting the day she decided to cheat on Karen with her ex, and the downfall Denny might has to suffer. She knows what had happened between Karen and her was bad, so she is confident Buck and Eddie will come back from this, seeing that Buck didn't kicked Eddie out of his hospital room once he woke up actually lucid.
"He forgives me, Hen. Easily." Eddie sighs. He still feels like he doesn't deserve love from Evan Buckley. Evan Buckley-Diaz now. "He forgives me too easily." Eddie murmurs under his breath, not intending for Hen to hear, but she heard them anyway.
"If Buck forgives you, then maybe you need to  start forgiving yourself too." Hen offers.

"We're only humans floating on a rock
But I think that you are made of stardust
Unconditional, you put up with so much
I can never repay the way you love
Back to the sky, we all have to fly back home, back home
The sweetest goodbyes are never with smiles at all"

///

Eddie swings open their house door without any grace, blaming his occupied hands. He can hear the clacking sound of his son's crutches and the stomping of Buck's socks-clad feet coming towards him. Within seconds, his once full hands are left empty when the box exchanged ownership. The duo are gone as fast as they come, robbing the cake away from Eddie.
"Well hello to both of you, too." Eddie huffs in mock annoyance.
The boys are too busy in deciding which flavor of cheesecake to start off with to even acknowledge Eddie's jeer. Eddie just smile fondly, not slightly bothered. He then snakes his hands around Buck's waist and pulls on his stomach so that Eddie's chest collides with his husband's back, tendering a chaste kiss to the corner of Buck's full lips.
"Kiss later Daddy. Pops and I need to choose now." Chris admonishes him, as if Eddie just disrupt their very top-level mission.
"Listen to our son. You know how much this decision is important to both of us. And you have me tortured all day craving for these." Buck teases, fluttering his eyelashes sinfully.
"Well, sorry for missing my husband." Eddie pulls his lips downwards, feigning hurt but tighten his hug regardless.
"You know I miss my cheesecake more than ever today. So can you please go take a shower while we plate this. You stink." Buck continues to bat his eyelashes, poking fun at Eddie.
Loosening his hold on his husband, Eddie reluctantly walks over to their bedroom, ready to wash away the day. Being alone in their room, Eddie remembers what Hen had said. Forgiving himself. Eddie never thought that is an option until Hen had spelled out to him today. It is a nice concept. Nevertheless, Eddie cannot see himself doing just that yet. Eddie feels like if he ever forgives himself, then whatever Buck has endured is meaningless. Eddie does not deserve the salvation, what more from himself no matter how nice the sentiment is.
Eddie is brought back to the reality when his phone vibrates in his back pocket.

Evan: Better be quick. I'm not to be accountable for a sugar-high child tonight. ;)

Eddie lets out a chuckle, his self-loathing forgotten for a moment.
***
Showered and shaved, Eddie steps out to the kitchen where Chris and Buck are still sitting around their plates of half-eaten cheesy and sugary goodness, chatting about something school related. Seeing Eddie, Buck immediately stood up and walks towards the oven, pulling out Eddie's share of dinner, still perfectly warm when Eddie took the plate from Buck. What has Eddie done in his previous life to deserve this man.
Sitting down next to Chris, Eddie can see the anticipation bubbling from Buck's face as he scoops up a hefty serving of lasagna with his spoon. Eddie doesn't need to pretend. He actually  honest to God lets out a huge appreciative moan when he took the bite. No offense to Bobby, but Buck is surpassing the Captain in no time in the cooking department.
And there are the twinkles again.
The twinkles that Eddie has longed before and now seeing them making their comeback just make Eddie's appetite that somehow was lost to grow.
"I love you." The words automatically fall out of his mouth, despite being loaded with food. He can imagine Abuela scolding him for talking with his mouth full.
Buck's cheeks tinted with pink. "You only love my cooking." Buck flusters, eyes looking everywhere but Eddie. His forks keep poking the remaining cheesecake in his plate. He's used with Eddie's declarations of loves, but often they are done privately. Other time is just chaste exchange of kisses and hand-holding or sometimes they were said in playful banter. Not in serious manner as how Eddie just did.
Chris, blessed his innocent soul supplies, "No Pops. Daddy really loves, loves you. He's very sad when you're sick." Oh. Buck knows Eddie must be worried, but he is good at masking his emotions especially in front of Chris. For Chris to be able to see that, Eddie must has shown his vulnerability, which is unusual. Now the pink has changed to red.
Eddie think it is impossible for Buck's cheeks to get redder than this. Eddie can actually see the flush travels down his neck to his chest and he tries his best suppressing the urge to imagine how far the tint goes like they usually does when they are in their bed. A child is present, Eddie.
"I, I... I love you, too." Buck finally confess shyly.
Chris cheers in delight while finishing his last bite of cake in one inhale.
"Am I still on the couch tonight?" Eddie wiggles his eyebrows seductively which only successfully making Buck to blush deeper.
"You are."

"But when our lives are running out
And your heartbeat has taken the draw
Could you try to look around?
I'll be there to pull you back up
I'll be around you
I'm nothing without you
I won't leave you alone
'Cause when the stars are falling down
There's love in the dark (I'll be there) (I'll be there)
There's love in the dark (I'll be there) (I'll be there)"

///

Eddie in fact did not end up on the couch.
Waking up to some delicious smell is not foreign in the Buckley-Diaz household now Buck has taken over the position as their chief chef. Buck literally is their savior, saving Chris and him from the damnation cereals, frozen meals and takeouts.
Eddie rubs the sleep off his face, still feeling the leftover fatigue from yesterday. A 48 hours shift will never get easier no matter how accustomed his body might be.
No matter how inviting the smell is, he knows he needs to wash up first or else Buck will dismiss him from the kitchen. "We don't mix filth and food at this table, Eddie." Not that Buck really mind when Eddie christened the kitchen, making Buck bending over the dining table some times ago.
Later Eddie will find vast array of baking ingredients on the kitchen counter still unpacked in the shopping bags.
"What are you doing?" Eddie asks once he steps into the kitchen.
Buck turns around from the stove. "Erm...French toast?" He then expertly flips the toast to its other side. "Yours will be ready in a minute."
Eddie shuffles closer, stroking Chris' hair who is happily nibbling at the toast Buck had prepared for him.
"No, Evan. I'm talking about the baking ingredients. Did you go out to buy all this?" Eddie's voice full of concern.
Buck proceeds to transfer the toast to an awaiting plate before turning off the stove. "What if I did?" He challenges defiantly.
"Evan, you know you shouldn't drive by yourself. Not yet." Eddie pulls Buck's hands into his.
Buck's face breaks into mischievous grin. "No, you worrywart. Carla brought this over when she stopped by this morning."
Eddie doesn't realise he was holding his breath. "Why didn't you ask me to buy them for you?"
Buck actually scoffs. "Because you will mess with the list, opting sub-standard brands in favour for cheaper ingredients. Which I will not tolerate because this is too important."
"And what is this that is too important to not have subpar ingredients in them?" Eddie knows Buck loves to bake, more than cooking actually. But the amount of ingredients on their kitchen counter is almost equivalent to what a bakery needs daily.
That only makes Buck to grin even wider. "Tell your Daddy, Chris." Buck calls out.
"Bake Sale!" Chris shouts in excitement from his chair, hands high in the air cheering to the news.
///
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Eddie chance a glance to Buck who is still unpacking the ingredients from the shopping bags, separating them from dry to wet. They have enough ingredients to bake almost anything, so Chris is in the living room, tasked to research on what will they bake for the school's Bake Sale.
Buck looks at Eddie with confusion etched on his face. "Why wouldn't I be?" Buck asks without hesitation.
Eddie exhales. "Ana will be there." Now Eddie wish for a hole to swallow him down so he doesn't have to face his husband scrutinizing eyes.
Buck pauses. "So? Why is that a problem?" Buck replied back, tone almost challenging.
Eddie doesn't really know how to react to Buck's questions. He then clears his throat. "I...I don't want you to get uncomfortable." He stutters, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
A beat of silence wash over them.
After a moment, Buck closes their distance, pulling Eddie forward. Buck smells like cinnamon and powdered sugar.
"Maybe I want to be there." Buck honest to God smirks at him. "Maybe I want to stake my claim." He whispers behind the shell of Eddie's ear, making him shudders in delight and terror. "Maybe I want to show her that you're mine. That I'm yours." Buck continues boldly, slyly.
Eddie feels the heat burning him all over. He takes a shuddering breath, all while thinking about Chris in the living room to prevent him from grinding their hips together. Oh God. Is this how Buck will punish him from now on? To let him succumbs to blue balls?
"Pops, I found it!" Christopher pipes in from the living room, yelling in delight.
"I'll be there in a second, buddy." But Buck's seductive smile doesn't falter. In fact, he proceeds to wet his red lips sinfully before kissing Eddie deeply. It takes all of Eddie's willpower not to moan, but as fast as the kiss start, Buck breaks apart with teasing grin and a wink. Eddie's mouth went dry.
Dear, Lord.
Eddie then is left alone in the kitchen with a hard on. Why does Buck likes to torture him this way? If this is the path to his salvation, dear God please help him.
///
Just like the weather forecast had predicted, it's raining cats and dogs that night. Eddie leaves the couch and walk towards Chris' bedroom to check on his son in case he is woken up by the thunder and lightning dancing outside their windows. Seeing that Chris is still sleeping undisturbly, he decides to settle for the night, switching off the television and checking at all the locks again.
When he enters their bedroom, he can see Buck's messy curls poking out from under the duvet. Buck is sleeping in the center of their bed, leaving little to no space for Eddie to squeeze in.
Eddie stroke the soft curls lovingly. Usually that does the trick to wake Buck up. "Hey, darling. Move over a little will you." Eddie pulls down the duvet, but Buck doesn't budge.
"Evan, you need to move over a bit so I can slide in." Eddie slowly shakes his husband gently, trying to rouse the man. Still no response.
Worry immediately creeps into Eddie. He ungracefully kneels beside the bed, half of his body on the bed. "Please Evan, open your eyes. Hey, Evan. Wake up." Eddie craddles Buck's head in his hand, tapping his cheek firmly. Yet Buck's eyelids remain glued shut.
"Sweetheart, please wake up. Please." Eddie pleads brokenly, still shaking Buck's shoulder. When Buck's head lolled back, his features slack and unmoving, Eddie can feel his heart stutters.
No. Not again. Not yet. Not like this. God. Oh God.
"I'd do anything to relive our memories
And listen to your songs play in my head
'Cause I hate the silence, it's the only thing I get
I wish I could hear your voice once again
And your heartbeat, all of the small things, oh, oh
The sweetest goodbyes are never with smiles at all"

Siren and a Sailor 😩🙏🏻💗💗💗💗💗
The one thing Eddie hated about being a Seal was that long leaves. Being shipped off to god knows where, without any notice. He hated having to leave without saying goodbye to Christopher. Hated having to leave him with his abuela. But he loved his job. He loved that he was making the world safer for his son. Take now for instance, he was in the middle of nowhere on a boat heading to stop some military arms dealer. At first, it was like any other trip until two days ago when Seals started disappearing. Everyone was at a lost of what was happening. These were good men that would never go AWOL. Eddie was worried. Something wasn’t right. He was on the deck watching the skyline when a soft melody caught his attention. He made his way to the back of the ship. The melody was entrancing as he got closer and closer to the railing.
“I wouldn’t get any closer if I were you.” An amused voice called out and Eddie turned to see a man sitting crossed legged on a jagged rock sticking out from the sea.
Eddie blinked and wondered if he was hallucinating this very attractive and very naked man.
“What?” Eddie slurred confused and the man smiled at him.
“My sisters would love to get their teeth into you so I wouldn’t take another step towards the edge.” The man smirked as he played with something shiny.
Eddie recognized the medal that belong to one of the Seals that went missing.
“Where did you get that?” Eddie asked fighting the fog in his brain.
“Somewhere you wouldn’t want to visit.” The man smiled at him and Eddie frowned.
“Who are you?” Eddie asked grasping his gun strapped to his thigh.
“My name is of no importance, Eddie Diaz.” Eddie frowned at him.
How did he know his name? Eddie wondered as he brought his gun up.
“Tell me where you found that medal.” Eddie growled and the man raised an amused eyebrow.
“In my sister’s den.” He answered vaguely and Eddie glared.
“Where is that?” Eddie asked and the man pointed down into the dark sea.
Eddie scoffed at him.
“What exactly are you saying?” Eddie asked and the man just uncrossed his legs and Eddie got a delicious view of his…Eddie shook his head focus.
Eddie watched as the man dipped one toe into the water and his lower half transformed into a black scaly tail. The man’s eyes turned red and when he smirked he had fangs. Eddie took a startled step back.
“Mermaids…” Eddie whispered the man scoffed and pulled his tail out of the water transforming back into the handsome man he was.
“We prefer sirens, thank you. You’re brothers in arms were taken by my sisters after falling for their siren calls. The very same you almost just fell for.” The man smiled softly and Eddie gasped.
“You stopped me. Why?” Eddie asked and the man shrugged.
“Your little one needs you.” The man shrugged and Eddie froze.
“How do you know about my son?” Eddie asked and the man smirked.
“I can see your thoughts, he plays a huge role in them.” The man stated and Eddie blushed.
Shit, if he could see his thoughts than he could see what he thought of when he looked the beautiful siren. Eddie saw the man smile.
“You are quite the exquisite creature yourself. You should tell your superiors to leave this place. My sisters are unable to control themselves.”
Eddie nodded as the man jumped into the water, when he resurfaced Eddie stared into his red eyes as he looked up at him.
“See you around.” The creature muttered before disappearing under the water.
4 Months Later.
Eddie was at the beach with Christopher. Eddie had just joined the 118 and they were celebrating. Eddie had turned his head for a second to answer a quick email on his phone and when he turned around Christopher was gone. When Eddie found him he was near the water holding a very large black shell.
“What is that? Where did you get it?” Eddie asked confused and Christopher smiled.
“Buck gave it to me.” Christopher looked out into the water and Eddie froze.
“Buck?” Eddie asked swallowing.
“He had red eyes and a black tail. He had a red mark above his eye.” Christopher smiled and Eddie felt his heart accelerate.
“What did he say?” Eddie asked and Christopher tilted his head.
“He said that it was nice to meet me and that if I ever needed anything to blow into the shell and he would come and help.” Christopher said and Eddie gulped.
“Can I see?” Eddie asked as Christopher handed him the shell.
Eddie brought the shell to his ear.
“Firefighter. Interesting. See you soon, Eddie.” The voice sent a shiver of pleasure down his spine as he looked out into the water.

First Impressions
Yesterday, I reblogged this long post that gave heaps of examples of people being nice humans to each other, despite their outward appearance. And the last paragraph, where a girl with a cold goes to convenience store and has a chat to a friendly giant of a man, just struck a chord. And then this inukag oneshot happened.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tumblr media
Kagome cracked open one eye, clutching the blanket tighter around her as she shivered. She really shouldn’t be surprised. All day yesterday she’d been feeling like crap. She’d put it down to the stress of moving into a new place, but nope. She had a cold. And probably not just a sniffle considering she was both shivering and sweating. She swallowed, then wished she hadn’t – it felt like she had a golf ball lodged in her throat. A golf ball covered in broken glass, serrated knives and acid.
“Sangoooo?” she moaned pitifully, not wanting to move from her balled-up position under the covers. No answer. Then she remembered. Sango had gone out last night, after failing to coax Kagome to come out and meet her friends for their regular Friday night drinks at the pub. Kagome had taken a rain check, feeling exhausted after moving all her stuff into Sango’s apartment and had just wanted an early night.
Come to think of it, she hadn’t heard Sango come in last night. Surely, she should be back home by now? She pushed one arm out of her blanket cocoon, patting the bedside table to find her phone with shaky fingers, then pulled it back inside, squinting at the brightness of the small screen with scratchy dry eyes.
She had three missed texts from Sango.
Kagomeee! If you change your mind hon, we’re at the pub a couple of blocks down – Three Blind Mice. Come out and drink with us! Me and ma boys! We gotta celebrate you moving in! Don’t be a party pooper!
Are you coming?! C’mon, we’re going dancing! You love to dance!
Gon crash at Mirokuuus. Bit tipssdfy. lOve ouup Kagsssss xxxxxxxxxdsklfsx
Kagome snorted. On the upside, it looked like she wouldn’t be the only one feeling like crap this morning. On the downside, it meant she had to fend for herself. She lay there feeling pathetic. Tried whimpering a little to see if it made her feel better. It didn’t. She wished that a glass of water would miraculously appear on her bedside table, complete with flu medication and a box of tissues. It didn’t. She tried engaging her usually happy go lucky personality. C’mon Kagome! Buck up, it’s just a virus. You’re not actually dying. Lots of people have it worse off than you… probably.
Finally, she dragged her sorry self out of bed, shivering as her feet met the cold wooden floor. Note to self. Buy slippers. She had no idea where any medicine she owned might be in her half-unpacked boxes of possessions, so she dragged herself into the bathroom and opened the mirrored cabinet to see if Sango had any. Lots of eyeshadow. Eye make up remover. Some nail polish that looked like it had gone a bit clumpy. Some bedraggled looking fake eyelashes that had seen better days. But no medication. Not even a cough drop. Note to self. Buy the entire contents of a pharmacy.
She shut the door of the cabinet and recoiled at her own reflection. Gah, she looked disgusting. Her face looked deathly pale framed by her blue-black hair, which seemed to look greasy and lank, even though she’d washed it yesterday. Nose and ears bright red. Blue eyes now watery. Even her lips looked chapped.
“Uuuungh”, she moaned, and wished she hadn’t as the demon that had taken up residence in her throat commenced merrily stabbing her with a pitchfork without restraint. She leaned her head forward on the cabinet with a dull thud. There was nothing for it. She was going to have to go outside and engage in conversation with actual people to buy something to make her feel human. Dammit.
Trudging through the snow wearing her only pair of tracksuit pants, her only pair of boots, nearly every shirt she owned and Sango’s puffy jacket that she’d pilfered from the hall closet, Kagome was bitterly regretting her decision to move to New York from California in late autumn. Who does that? Her joy at finally being able to move in with her best friend Sango after securing the job of her dreams in New York was definitely being overshadowed by her physical misery at the moment. Her shivers were reaching the proportion of actual earthquake tremors, and the cold air was making her throat feel even worse. She hunched her shoulders against the cold wind, both hands shoved in the pockets in an attempt at keeping them warm. Note to self. Buy a woolly hat. And gloves. And a scarf. A trickle of dampness invaded her suede boots, which were very cute, but obviously not waterproof. And new boots.
A small eddy of frozen air whistled around her, the cold breeze managing to poke it’s frozen fingers down the back of her neck. She whimpered, and then made a determined face. C’mon Kagome. Think of the pioneers. They didn’t have puffy jackets, and they survived. Mostly. She’d been walking for twenty minutes and she still hadn’t found somewhere that sold over the counter cold medicine. Now she’d settle for just Tylenol, anything to dull the pain in her throat and the increasing thump in her head.
She spotted a convenience store on the corner and decided this was it. Whatever they had would be good enough until Sango got home. She shuffled in the door, scrubbing the snow off her boots on the mat and swiftly closing the door behind her. She could have wept in relief. It was warm in here.
Her ears were burning with the cold, and she wished she’d had the sense to buy more cold weather clothes before she moved. She was pretty sure her boots were going to be ruined, her socks were soggy and freezing. It was only mid-November, she didn’t think it would be snowing already, but apparently according to the weatherman, she’d moved in the middle of some freak early cold front. Figures.
Rubbing her ears gently to try and defrost them, she walked over to the shelves that had looked like they had medication stocked on them, glancing at the guy standing behind the counter. She stopped. Wow.
He was tall, really tall. And muscular. The red flannel shirt he was wearing did nothing to disguise the width of his shoulders. But what really made him stand out was the long silver hair, pulled back at the nape of his neck. And… omg, were they puppy ears?! Kagome nearly squeaked. She’d only met a few demons in San Diego where she’d previously lived, mostly ones that had an affinity with water, seeing there were so many jobs available that centred around the fishing industry. She’d never seen anyone like him before. One pointed white ear twitched, obviously listening. Gah, so cute!
Kagome realised she had been blatantly staring when he turned his piercing amber eyes her way, his expression a little stern, and she quickly whipped her gaze to the shelves in front of her, cheeks burning with more than the cold. Focus Kagome! Don’t bother the nice demon. So what if he’s the most spectacularly beautiful person you’ve ever seen. She picked up some Tylenol, then grabbed a basket and trailed around the little store. There wasn’t a huge amount to choose from, but she added a couple of bottles of Gatorade. That would have to do.
She approached the counter with some trepidation. At 5’2”, she knew she wasn’t the tallest person around, but next to this guy she felt miniscule. A tiny pathetic, wet kitten sized ball of sickness. He was leaning back against the wall with his eyes closed and arms crossed, looking like he wanted to be anywhere but this convenience store, and she couldn’t really blame him. She’d done her time working in customer service and it sucked. She quietly put her items down on the counter.
“Um, excuse me?” Ouch. She almost whimpered at the ripping feeling in her throat as she spoke.
He turned towards her, uncrossing his arms, his amber eyes almost seeming to possess their own glow.
“Hey, you okay? You really don’t sound so good.” His voice was like melted honey, a rich baritone, and the gaze of those golden eyes was focused directly on her. A double whammy that had Kagome feeling a little weak in the knees. Usually she would have brushed off a stranger with a bland ‘I’m fine’, but something about that voice and the concern in those amber eyes made her tell the truth.
“Not so good. I woke up with a sore throat; I think I’m coming down with the flu.”
He looked her over and Kagome felt like a deer caught in the headlights, mesmerised. Like she’d accidentally come in contact with some ancient demigod doing his best to blend into modern society by wearing a flannel shirt and jeans and failing miserably because he was just too goddamned beautiful. She tried to get her shivering under control, so she didn’t look quite as pathetic as she felt, but that seemed to make it even worse.
“Have you eaten anything today?”
Kagome shook her head, unwilling at this point to speak and risk more punishment from her throat. His throat rumbled; it was an obvious reproach, a resonating grumbling growl that woke up tiny butterflies in Kagome’s insides.
“You need to eat if you’re sick. Would ya like a chicken sandwich? They’re warm, and they’re pretty delicious.”
Kagome’s stomach spoke for her as if on cue, and he grinned at her, a sharp fang poking over his lip, the golden eyes squinting in amusement. Her cheeks heated even more, and the butterflies turned somersaults in her stomach and woke up their friends.
“I guess that’s a yes then.”
Kagome nodded again, gripping the edge of the counter for support. She wasn’t sure if it was the flu or the aura of the man in front of her, but she was feeling a little light-headed. She watched as he carefully wrapped up the hot chicken sandwich and scanned her other items, placing them all gently in a bag, handing it to her after she’d paid.
“You be careful out there, okay? The slush on the corners can be really slippery after it’s stopped snowing. Have you got far to walk?”
Kagome shrugged. “Not too far”, she tried to say, but all that came out was a creaky whisper. Great, now her voice was disappearing altogether. She swallowed with an effort. “Thankyou.”
She opened the door and stepped back out into the cold, and the wind seemed to cut into her like a knife. She smothered a small whimper and began trudging away from the store, hunching her shoulders in an effort to keep the small amount of warmth leftover from being inside still had safe, when a sudden hand on her shoulder made her freeze.
She turned, only to see the dog-eared demon from the store. With a bright red woollen beanie in his hands. Which he suddenly plonked down on her head.
“Ya know, only an idiot would be going out in out in weather like this without a hat, especially if they’re sick”, he said conversationally, tugging down the edges to make sure her ears were covered.
Kagome stared at him open mouthed.
“Either you’re an idiot, or you’re delirious. Which is it?” He placed a hand on her forehead, checking her temperature. “Dammit, girl, you’re burnin’ up! I was just jokin’ with the delirious crack, but maybe you really are!” He stared at her seriously for a moment, then seemed to come to a decision. He poked his head into the store, hollered that he was leaving for the day, grabbing a jacket and a scarf that was near the front door, then walked back to her side.
“C’mon, I’m walkin’ you home”, he said, shrugging on the jacket. “You said you didn’t have far to walk, right? Can’t be good for business to lose a local customer.”
Kagome looked at him uncertainly. He certainly didn’t look like a serial killer, but she got the impression that most serial killers didn’t go about announcing their intentions either. And he’d seen that she didn’t have much money – she’d dumped the fistful of change on the counter when she’d bought stuff, with only a dollar or two to spare. What if he were some kind of pervert?
While she was trying to make a decision, he commenced winding the scarf around her neck gently, tucking the ends in her jacket. He must have noticed the hesitation in her gaze, because he took a step backwards out of her personal space.
“Hey, I promise I’m not tryin’ to take advantage of ya. I’m not that kinda guy. And even if I was, which I promise I ain’t, you really look terrible at the moment.”
Kagome glared at him. That may be true, but he didn’t have to be an asshole and actually tell her. She was tempted to rip of the scarf and hat and stomp home, but her ears had only just begun to thaw out. And to tell the truth, she was feeling so ill that she was actually beginning to wonder if she would actually make it home, stomping or otherwise.
The dog demon clicked his fingers, and Kagome noticed the long pointed nails at the ends of his fingers. “I know. What if I call a friend of mine? To vouch for me. She’s the type a girl to tell it to you straight.” He dug into his jeans pocket and pulled out a phone and dialled a number.
“Hey Sango”. Kagome’s eyes rounded in surprise as she watched him speak on the phone. He sniggered. “You sound terrible… Yeah sorry to wake you. Actually no I’m not… That’s what you get for listenin’ to Miroku – I thought you were smart. Anyway, I want you to speak to a girl I’m gonna walk home, let her know I’m trustworthy… Shut. Up. Not like that! Okay, thanks… wait, what? Oh, I dunno, guess I’d better ask huh?”
He turned to Kagome. “Sorry, just realised that I never asked your name.” He bent his head down so he’d be able to hear her soft voice over the wind whistling around them in the narrow street.
“It’s Kagome”, she whispered, almost giggling as the demon’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Wait, you’re Kagome?! Sango’s new flatmate?” Kagome nodded, shivering violently as another breeze whistled around the corner, and he the golden eyes narrowed in concern. “Shit, we’d better get you outta the wind and home before you get any sicker.” He turned his attention back to Sango on the phone. “Hey Sango, it’s Kagome. She’s actually sick, she’s lost her voice – I was gonna walk her home because she looks terrible. Can you talk to her, let her know I’m okay?”
He handed the phone to Kagome. “Here, listen to Sango for a sec.”
“Kagome?” said Sango, “is that you?” Kagome made an incoherent creaking sound. “Oh, hon I’m so sorry you’re not well and I wasn’t there this morning. Listen, let Inuyasha walk you home. He’s one of my best friends – you would have met him last night if you’d come out with us. He may look grumpy, but he’s just got resting bitch face – he’s actually a sweetheart when you get to know him. I’m gonna have a shower here and I’ll be home in an hour or two, okay? Love you!”
Kagome handed back the phone. “What the hell Sango? Resting bitch face?” he grumbled into the phone. “Yeah right, sure, when hell freezes over. Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of her. See ya later.”
The walk home ended up being a bit of a blur to Kagome. She was sure she was actually leaning on Inuyasha at one point, and he may have piggy backed her up the stairs. They finally made it back to the apartment, and after he’d taken the key from her shaking fingers and opened the door, he insisted she take some Tylenol straight away and have a shower to try and warm up.
The warm water burned at first against her frozen skin, but finally she managed to thaw out. The medication must have started working because the thumping in her head had decreased from kettle drum sized down to a small set of bongos, and her shivering had almost stopped.
When she tottered back out to the lounge room, dressed in her pj’s and thick socks with her quilt wrapped around her, dragging on the floor behind her like a royal train, she found Inuyasha waiting with two bowls of instant ramen.
“Hey Kagome.” He examined her carefully, then smiled, holding out a bowl to her. “You’re actually lookin’ a little better, but you still need to eat somethin’. I put your chicken sandwich in the fridge for later, but I thought this might be a little easier on your throat. If you can’t eat the noodles, at least drink the broth.”
Kagome plonked herself down on the sofa across from Inuyasha and reached out for the bowl and chopsticks, breathing in the steam and wrapping her hands around the warm of the bowl. She smiled at him gratefully. “Thanks Inuyasha”, she whispered. “How did you know that I love instant ramen. Did Sango tell you?”
Inuyasha shook his head and returned her smile with a toothy grin, picking up his chopsticks and watching as she greedily slurped the noodles from her quilt cocoon. “Nuh, she didn’t. But it looks like you and I are gonna get along just fine.”
