I feel like Martin could’ve been a really interesting character in tma but so much of the content about him is about jmart and being like “oh he’s so nice!”. Character who should be put on a high up shelf for a tiny bit while the fandom considers it a little maybe. He has a bunch of moments I really liked but I’m not a huge fan of the interpretations most people have.
I got somewhat more rambly than usual and most of my mutuals probs don’t want to see this so:
YEAH SO TRUE!! He is literally so compelling in s4!! There is so much to like about him!! There’s so much I want to know more about and an arc I wish so badly that he’d had!!!…..
But then he just. Kinda didn’t? Like they put a bunch of cool ideas for him on the table then pushed them all off in s5 by giving him nothing to do except nag at Jon which did nothing but make him sound really annoying. Plus like…. He was framed more righteously than before y’know? Like the narrative was leaning into those ‘cute little UwU bean’ interpretations and it just came across as so…. !!!! Like!! Annabelle Cane literally talks about how good of a web avatar he would make so why didn’t we spend ANY of s5 exploring that!! Why did we barely get to explore him at all outside of like 2 lonely based episodes!! Why is everyone convinced that he’s both super smart AND the epitome of moral righteousness!! We’ve only seen him be manipulative once (which lead do the end of the world) and then got a whole bunch of lip service about it and we were straight up told that a lot of his fluffier qualities are a straight up lie!! And nothing interesting comes of this AUGHHHH!!
Sorry for rambling a bit, I just remembered how much wasted potential Martin had and it hurt.

Sometimes I think jmart is cute. Then I see jmart shippers romanticizing the most boring edition of codependency ever. How can you go uwu for the kind of relationship your neighbors who want a divorce but won't admit it because they're scared of being alone have? Where was that post saying jmart shippers will never be in a loving, healthy relationship.

wait wait wait we've seen this before. we've seen someone ignore the fears so hard that she survived a ritual. sure, alice is flippant like tim, but the way she just ignores and compartmentalizes the horrible things she's forced to witness is so much like basira.

very very funny how intersex transfems are by far the most vocal haters of tme/tma as binary terms because of the way that perisex people use them to discredit intersex trans people's complex experiences. but sure it's just those horrible afab trans people again!!
[Plaintext: very very funny how intersex transfems are by far the most vocal haters of tme/tma as binary terms because of the way that perisex people use them to discredit intersex trans people's complex experiences. but sure it's just those horrible afab trans people again!! End Plaintext.]
(also do not fucking try to witch hunt these people. i will block you on sight, i cropped out the urls for a reason)
edit: reminder that this post was made first and foremost about intersexism, and while it's okay to discuss other forms of oppression in the tags and reblogs (especially since i tagged them as such), please stop trying to brush off the original point.

I like that: "why don't you just quit" is part of the lore of the Magnus Institute, not because it particularly adds to spookiness, but because it just emphasizes the Evils of Capitalism.
Because I've had tons of terrible jobs. I've been lucky enough to find better safer jobs and be able to quit. But so many people it's not an option.
If you try to leave the institute you start dying, and really that's the bottom line for many people in the real world, not only that, it's not only you that's dying but also potentially the family you're trying to support.
And it's not one job, sometimes it's multiple jobs.
And your life has become about a company that doesn't care about you, treat you well, or even compensate you enough that you can afford to take your chances elsewhere. Society undervalue and looks down on your job despite the hard work you do, despite how tired you are. Despite how it's led to health problems that you can't afford to report, so places that do accept the skills on your resume are just as bad.
I know season five especially was very clear on: one of the greatest evils is capitalism and how it allows people to benefit off the suffering of others.
But I just think about Magnus Archives a lot. How often it's an understanding I've felt with a statement giver because I've felt what they've felt on a smaller scale. Or one just as horrifying but absolutely in a mundane sort of way. Which I think a lot of times is the point.

Jmart isn't revolutionary. It took years to do what WTNV did on Episode 1. Jmart isn't more narratively interesting or more healthy or more forefront than Cecilos. How dare TMA-onlys act like Jmart is somehow culturally significant AND narratively important AND a great model for ideal relationships.

im honestly really sick of people acting like trans men are basically the same as cis men. u really think trans men have societal power and are an oppressive class over trans and cis women?? u think we have male privilege just because we’re trans men?? yeah. definitely a thing. if we pass we automatically adopt all the privileges and power of a cis man forever and always. thats definitely the reality we live in.
trans men do not hold privilege over cis or trans women for being men. we have to fight daily for even a scrap of respect. passing and closeted people only experience privilege if they stay closeted.
like come the fuck on-- society doesnt give a shit if we’re men-- they see us as other. trans men, trans women, nonbinary people: we are all other. none of us are more accepted than the other. we are all “degenerates” in their eyes. sure, theres specific ways we might be treated, but the bottom line is: we’re gross we’re unnatural we’re dangerous we’re unwelcome. thats it.
it’s not misogynistic to say trans men face struggles because we are men who are trans. it’s not leaving out transfems, it’s not disregarding their experiences-- it actually may include them! point is, acting like trans men have societal power is really fucking stupid. its shitty and only erases our experiences.
infighting helps no one but the oppressors.

i think i've mentioned The Magnus Archives before, but i wanted to talk about it again, in connection with Catra's redemption. The Magnus Archives is a fictional horror podcast with an overarching storyline and amazingly written characters.
[spoilers for TMA below]
one of the themes that was briefly explored in the final season was about forgiveness. it was a very brief moment but it really stuck with me so i'll share it with y'all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this right here was so important. for context, one of the characters, Daisy Tonner, was a cop who frequently engaged in police brutality. there was nuance to this since she was an Avatar of the Hunt but simply put, she thought she was doing the right thing. regardless of her intentions, a lot of people were killed or grievously harmed by her. for similar reasons, she tries to kill Jon, the protagonist.
later after disconnecting from her entity, Daisy realizes her mistakes and feels painfully guilty about everything. she couldn't bring back the dead, she couldn't reverse anything that she had done. all she could do at that point was to just stop engaging in violence and try to be a better person.
she bonds with Jon after some time of mutual awkwardness. Jon, being lonely himself, wasn't entirely opposed to talking to her and they even form a friendship of sorts. for context, Jon has hurt people too and he could relate with Daisy's guilt and her attempts at redemption.
in the transcript i shared above, Jon is discussing her crimes with the other characters. the thing that was so refreshing about Daisy's redemption is that Jon wasn't forced to forgive her. she put him through an extremely traumatizing and agonizing situation that he couldn't forget. his trauma was taken seriously and while he had begun to consider Daisy as his friend, that doesn't mean he forgave her. and she knew that. she understood that she didn't deserve forgiveness, but she still worked on trying to be a better person.
and later on in the series, Jon even expresses his appreciation for her friendship and admits to wanting to say goodbye to her.
Tumblr media
i feel like this is the best way to write a redemption arc. of course it's nice seeing the bad guy being forgiven and accepted by the other characters. but sometimes you have to acknowledge that some people go too far and while they deserve a redemption, they don't deserve forgiveness. the other characters can still appreciate and respect their attempts at redemption, and even become their friend but without being forced to forgive them.
contrast this to SPOP where literally all of the characters have to forgive Catra after everything she's done to them. it doesn't matter how much damage she caused, as soon as she expresses the tiniest bit of guilt, she is instantly forgiven. there's no question of how the other characters feel, their trauma is not valid.
also, i have a feeling that if any of the characters refused to forgive Catra, she would have immediately thrown a hissy fit and spiralled right back to square one. i mean, look at her reaction to Frosta punching her.
by the way, i want to add that Daisy was also a traumatized character. she was also a sympathetic antagonist and she was partially controlled by the Hunt (whether the entities controlled their avatars or not was an unanswered question but it was confirmed that the Avatars were at least 80% in control of themselves). but she still did what she did and no amount of tragic backstory could justify her actions. if only the writers of SPOP actually stopped to think this through, instead of just hyperfocusing on getting Catra and Adora together.
anyway, if you like cosmic/existential horror, lots of angst, deep psychological stuff, complex morally grey characters, and queer representation, i highly recommend TMA! it's the whole package.
