The Jiang Cheng Research Experiment Poll
Hello everyone! I'm running a pure curiosity experiment to see if there's any correlation between a mdzscql fan's sibling status and how much they like/dislike Jiang Cheng! Results will probably be shared sometime next week on this account to allow for adequate response time.
Here's the link to the form! It's totally anonymous and very short (only 2 required questions), so I would really appreciate it if you filled it out and shared it wherever you can!
Thank you!

It really bothers me when people deny or downplay JC putting WWX in a room with a dog, that it doesn't "qualify" as torture. WWX fears dogs more than he fears death. And JC knew this and put him in a room with one.
Torture isn't always blood and bodily injury. Psychological torture can be just as effective. JC knew that there would be no harm done physically, and that more traditional torture wouldn't confirm his suspicion that MXY was 100% WWX anyway.
Torture is torture is torture, even if you believe he wasn't truly being malicious with said torture.

MDZS Fanon Peeve: WWX and JWY Reconciliation (🤢🤮)
Warnings: Opinionated and probably biased JC bashing. Some cursing. Read at your discretion.
As much as I despise JWY he was a perfectly written character. As perfect as you can write an unhinged insecure megalomaniac underneath the facade of a political leader with their flaws(a lot of flaws).
But lets talk about the ending where people think JWY has changed for the better. Enough change that despite the unlikelihood there is a possibility for reconciliation which is to say none on my part. Which also infuriates me when browsing for fics.
One encounter can definitely change someone's perspective but that doesn't change every aspect of their world view. Especially someone late in their life and as set in their ways is as JWY.
Sure the Golden Core reveal and encounter with JGY might have JWY rethinking of his treatment of WWX during his first life.
But what about his anger about the burning of Lotus Pier, his sister's death, his distaste for LWJ and WWX's relationship? Don't tell me his entire world view just flipped just because he recognized WWX leaving the sect was as his fault? Don't tell me he learned to be a better uncle to JRL because he realized he was a terrible guardian and role model? No one shall dare tell me that JWY stopped being homophobic after the book. Would he actually be a better person just because he learned that the origin of the core he received was falsified?
That encounter had no repentance to the 13 years of hunting "demonic cultivators".
That scene had no realizations about how badly he messed up JRL. In fact he even uses JRL as an excuse to further attack WWX stating the JRL was parentless because of him. JWY literally pushes and shouts at JRL everytime he tries to help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this is being a good uncle, then JGY was a f***ing saint to JRL.
What we got out of it was him still feeling that WWX was the cause of the Massacre and the catalyst for his sister's death and how he betrayed him for the Wens. And how shitty he treated his own nephew who was just worried about his health. Oh and his inferiority complex the size of the Pacific.
He spits all that gasoline to set fire to already charred wood.
WWX: Take it as my repayment to the Jiang Family
JWY: Repayment, to my father, my mother, my sister?
WWX: Forget it it's all in the past, let's not mention it again.
Tumblr media
He still had the f***ing gall to ask more from WWX as if those people were still alive and that his Golden Core and sufferings weren't enough. As if WWX needs to do more to recompense for the abysmal treatment he received in Lotus Pier. At least WWX has enough emotional maturity for the entirety of the story.
Tumblr media
Boohoo. Spare me the tears. That was probably the most unsympathetic and pathetic waterworks I have seen to date.
All he learned was to leave WWX alone. Because nothing good comes out of trying to take what was never owed. a debt that was already paid.
So yeah. There's no changing angry toxic grapes so late in life. We get sh**** wine from fermenting wrongly from the start.
Just because they've agreed to forget doesn't mean they will ever forgive. What JWY became and what his part in the demise of the Wen Remnants is unforgivable to WWX. And to JWY, WWX's 'betrayal'(I laugh at JC stans in my head) is unforgivable to him.
Don't ever mention any possibilities of a WWX and JWY reconciliation to me. That tag should burn.

Tumblr media
A bit of jc stans love that may be a bit out of topic at times
And also the tiniest bit of actual canon jc discussion if you're lucky to stumble upon it!
Have a safe trip and beware of the wild antis just waiting for a chance to misinterpret the novel on your notes!

saw someone call jc the "most successful man" in the story... what kind of nonsense omg
Okay that says something about their understanding of the story 😂🤣.
First, Wei Wuxian's involvement in the war was a huge help for the jiang sect . Second, unlike cloud recces, where it burnt, his sect wasn't in a dire situation. Thirdly, rather than placing his people first, he was constantly grumpy and preoccupied with pursuing mo dao cultivators. In the end, his people became weary of him and grew frightened of him, preferring to seek assistance from outsiders rather than him.
♡If people can't understand that this is a major red sign that revealed his incompetence, I don't know what more to say.♡

Fanon Petpeeve: Lotus Brained Wei Wuxian
Next up on my ever growing ilst of things I'm getting tired off seeing in fanfiction is the fanon is that Wei Wuxian wants to go back to Lotus Pier, that he never stops thinking about Lotus Pier, that Lotus Pier and the Jiangs are on his mind 24/7.
I see it most prominently in fics that are set in the Yiling Laozu days. Wei Wuxian regrets saving the Wens to some extent (they don't outright say that, but they always have paragraphs about how he misses doing certain things- or having certain things- with Jiang Cheng and Yanli that he can't do with the Wens now that he's a wanted criminal). Wei Wuxian will also bemoan his living conditions, but not for the fact that he's living in the burial mounds, he would feel that way in any place that wasn't lotus pier because lotuses! "Attempt the Impossible"! Lotus root and pork rib soup!
In these fics, his relationships with the Wens are thrown away, getting stuck in a protector watching over a set of cardboard figures type of situation. Wen Qing is the mean doctor who nags, doesn't listen to anything Wei Wuxian says cause he's "stupid", and will metaphorically ditch him to keep the rest of the remnants safe. The only thing Wen Ning knows how to say is "Young Master Wei" and is a brick wall until they need Qiongqi Path Part 2 to happen, then he's a sulking brick. And Wen Yuan and granny are there with the rest of the cardboard wens.
---
In fics that happen post ressurection, Wei Wuxian is made to be guilty over the events of his first life, constantly thinking about how he's wronged Jiang Cheng and the fall of Lotus Pier is his fault and Yanli's death was his fault and if only there was a way for him to make amends.
These fics also soften Jiang Cheng into the caring guy who only says but doesn't mean the harsh words he says. They even have a scene where he stabs Wei Wuxian (whether its a flashback to the siege or at Carp Tower) but it's okay cause he was crying while the blood stained his sword. Wei Wuxian is fine with being stabbed, good job little brother.
---
In post canon fics it's normally a short line, maybe a paragraph, about how living in the Cloud Recesses bogs down Wei Wuxian and if only he could visit the sun shining lotus pier with lotues and Jiang Cheng maybe he'd be able to feel something again. He misses Lotus Pier so much, he misses his home, he wants to go home sometimes!

It is absolutely wild to me how people can equate JC's and WWX' journey throughout MDZS and be like "They BOTH went through terrible things and sacrificed a lot for each other!!!1!!1 They should leave the past behind and make up!" Or even worse, when it's suggested that JC has any right to be mad or grieve over the golden core reveal and it will completely reverse their roles when WWX finds out about JC's sacrifice.
Yes, they have both sacrificed for one another and have wronged one another. But there are NUANCES here - one is not like the other!! WWX has carved out the very essence if himself, cultivated over decades in an excruciating, life-threatening procedure over the course of 3 days to save JC's life and legacy. Yes, he lied about it. Yes, he lied about it for a long time. Yes, the lie entailed a not inconsiderable amount of shame for Yunmeng Jiang through his "disrespect" as head disciple. No, this does not even out the sacrifice made.
First of all, the lie was as necessary for Yunmeng Jiang's survival as it was for WWX' and JC's dignity. The sect just rebuilt with the most powerful person alive as head disciple - this very head disciple is coreless? Very killable if you get half a chance? Powerful yes, but more vulnerable than previously thought possible. The sect leader of this sect uses the golden core of the son of a servant? Couldn't even keep his own? Vulnerable, vulnerable, vulnerable. Something all JC stans agree, Yunmeng Jiang couldn't afford at the time. And I can't believe it has to be said but having sacfriced something like a golden core and being lied to about it are NOT equally terrible things happening to a person! Plus, JC was only lied to about the specifics - he knew the core was not his. Does the transfer entail a whole lot emotional baggage that would have influenced his decision on it big time? Yes!!! But the general idea is not news to him.
And yes, JC distracted the guards from WWX, losing his golden core as a result. Did he intend to lose his golden core? NO!!! Would he have done it if he knew what it would cost him? Maybe. Personally, I'm leaning to No given his state after the loss, but one could argue probably along similar lines for WWX and his decision was a measured, deliberate one, even discussing it with others beforehand. Point being, JC did not sacrifice his golden core for WWX. He impulsively distracted the guards, resulting in the loss, but he never made a conscious decision as WWX did. And he did blame WWX for it. He never told him but he blamed him for the fall of Lotus Pier and everything else that happened after.
WWX was bitter over JC losing his golden core for something he thought was a reckless stunt. Which it was, but for him, not for his parents. Which WOULD change much about his perception of himself and his position in his former sect, but not all of it. The point remains that JC chose to let him go. JC chose to blame him for everything that happened to him and his family, while knowing it was wrong. JC chose to lie to himself and blame WWX because it was easier for him to cope. JC chose to lay siege to the Burial Mounds to kill his former martial brother and dozens of innocents because he refused to confront these lies.
These are things not like the other and when comparing their respective actions it's clear that it's a whole pile of a toxic mess - lies, sacrifices no one asked for, bitterness and longing. But but - there is a clear cut who acted consciously to damage the other and who sought to protect the other - in toxic ways, yes - but with the best tools he had at the time.

JC stans starting their regularly scheduled shit in a tag not meant for them is in the most JC type behavior they could have. They're really encapsulating JC well. Hopefully, they can get to the part of his growth where he let's go of his delusional bitterness a bit.

MDZS Fanon Pet Peeve: the Jiang heir
Warning: Some cursing and expletive language.
I just noticed/realized is that there are fics out there with JWY, the bane of all matchmakers and decent women in all the land, would actually make his head disciple or any other person who wasn't Jiang blood into his heir.
Yes the classist, bigoted, JWY, naming some cultivator he recruited in the war to inherit his position as Sect leader.
I'm sad to know that there are actually fics out there that portray JWY as someone who could care less about the background of their heir and choose them for competency. Or worse. Choose them because they were apparently surviving Jiang disciples that WWX had trained because apparently sentimentality (which JWY never had).
I think worst of them all is when they think JWY would actually appoint WWX as the Jiang heir especially post canon.😱
See where I'm going here? That just goes to show how those writers understood him. Which is to say not at all.🧐
That's why I'm always struck by some fics that show JWY as dying a bitter single unlikeable person that he truly is at the end of the book. Those were particularly good 😊. I found more realistic compared to the drivel that I cannot unread.
I sometimes wish my brain can do selective amnesia so I can unread all the OOC JWY fics I've read in my dark history. 😓
Let's take a look at why he would never allow someone who was at least not his own child or blood relative to become an heir of YunmengJiang and why he shall remain a bachelor for the rest of his lonely angry lifespan.
First of all, I don't think it was really mentioned, but I doubt JWY is the last Jiang besides JL.
He might be the last main line Jiang there is within immediate succession. Maybe he had relatives who married out to come back to bolster the ranks or there were non-clan Jiang disciples who were not prevented from nighthunting were out on a hunt and escaped the massacre to rejoin the sect.
How many besides the main clan are actual gentry? Not a lot unless they married in or they were civilian gentry that joined (I'm calling it civilian gentry cause there was the Mo Family who were a non-cultivation family ruling their village)
I'm guessing not a lot in the Jiang Clan too. The Sect more or less survived the war but the Jiang Clan was probably down to JFM, JYL, and JWY. With JYL marrying out and JFM and YZY dying, the Jiang Clan was unfortunately left with JWY to continue the bloodline. Sucks for them.
YZY would probably roll in her grave, claw her way out of hell, and become a fierce corspe just to make sure that no one other than her children or her grandchildren were to inherit the throne of sect leader. And I believe JWY would think the same as her or seek approval from his parents even after death. Nor would he grant the Jiang name to anyone that wasn't his blood related family. Plus I think he'd rather slit his own throat than adopt some child.
Another thing is the tag Adopted WWX that gets me annoyed sometimes. In the novel he was never adopted he was just taken in as a ward and treated like nuisance. So it confounds me that people actually write how WWX was always in the clan registry or that JWY had the option of naming WWX as Jiang Heir.
If in the novel JFM couldn't deign to give WWX at least legal familial support through adoption why would JWY?
JWY who blamed WWX for a lot of things he never did and still blames him. Who couldn't even look at WWX's relationship with LWJ without sneering in disgust. Would actually give him a position of power that means the most to his egotistical life. Yeah nuh uh. 😑
As for a Jiang heir, he also would never appoint any of his disciples that position. Much less if they were rogue cultivators or backgroundless civilians that he recruited during the war. Much lesser if they were trained by WWX of all people.
He treats all of his disciples like subordinates where his command was unquestioned. What WWX was not are the qualities he looks for in his disciples. JWY would prefer all of his disciples to stay far away from any behavior WWX had. His disciples didn't blink an eye to when WWX was being dragged into an inn to most likely be tortured to death.
As long as JWY lives and breathes and has the final say so he would never appoint, WWX or any of his disciples Jiang heir. Only by some miracle he actually gets married and has a child will the Jiang Clan have an heir because he is mostly like to die single. Also YunmengJiang sect would probably be fine under temporary leadership of someone who is not the Jiang Clan heir.
So why would he forever remain a single fermented grape?
JC stans are probably the only ones that would marry him and those don't exist in the MDZS universe.
One. He was blacklisted by all the matchmakers in Yunmeng.
I would say it takes skill to become rejected by an entire region of eligible families and their daughters. But no he is just an ***hole who can't keep his opinions to himself and aims to be as rude and derisive as possible towards perfectly fine ladies. In the audio drama he insulted a lady's choice of colors and perfume for smelling like, and I quote, "noxious poison". I mean wtf?! If that's how he treats all the females then it's no wonder he's not married yet. Plus three more off screen blind dates that went horrible.
Two. He will never marry because he has standards.
Standards he will probably not budge on. Those were: naturally beautiful, graceful and obedient, hard-working and thrifty, coming from a respected family, cultivation level not too high, personality not too strong, not too talkative, voice not too loud and must treat Jin Ling nicely.
The last one is the only relatively reasonable standard he has set. The rest is just him being picky he might as well get a doll dress it in red and marry it.
Three. No one in their sane state of mind would marry someone with the reputation of a rabid dog.
JWY, has gone on to torture people of inconsequential backgrounds, to death, for years. I say inconsequential because I doubt he would target people who had societal backing. People like Xue Yang who was under the Jins and proven to be a homicidal demonic cultivator with a record of massacring entire clans who he did not pursue because he is a coward.
The slightest suspicion not always with verified proof a person gets dragged to Lotus Pier to be flayed to death with a lightning whip. He barely even proves any of his victims to be demonic cultivators before whipping them or interrogating them further. Lots of firm connotations and even secondhand accounts of people being violently whipped on the the docks of Lotus pier.
WWX as MXY was already allegedly proven to not be possessed but JWY still insists on dragging him to Lotus Pier.
WWX dodged a bullet when LWJ was there to protect him.
Someone tell me if I'm not too far off and this is a viable argument that JWY will remain heirless or at least single for the rest of his f***ed up natural life? And would never name a Jiang heir that doesn't meet his requirements. Maybe even add to this discussion. Much appreciated 😌.

sorry but if anyone in their generation is going to cultivate to immortality its going to be jiang cheng and hes going to do it out of sheer spite
like nobody things its going to be huaisang, including huaisang, thats fair
but EVERYONE says surely it'll be the twin jades of lan. but xichen doesnt want to cultivate anymore post-guanyin temple and wangji doesnt see a point of immortality if wei ying cant be by his side
but nobody says it'll be sandu shengshou, despite his reputation for being ruthless, powerful, and able to build himself and his sect up from literal ashes. people are already talking about the next generation, perhaps lan sizhui or jin rulan
of course jiang cheng wants jin ling to cultivate to immortality, but he's pissed off that nobody thinks he can do it, (even with wei wuxian's stolen core) despite the fact he hasnt aged a day since the sunshot campaign
so jiang cheng decides fuck it, fuck you, fuck all yall, i dont even particularly want to be immortal but im doing it just to prove you fuckers wrong

in awe of the donghua for slapping "Jiang Cheng had to give up his dogs as a child so that Wei Wuxian could live with him in Lotus Pier" into the same episode as "Wei Wuxian refuses to give up the Wen dogs Clan Remnants so that he can live with Jiang Cheng in Lotus Pier".
Really hammering that nail home about how Jiang Cheng has repeatedly given up everything he reasonably can for Wei Wuxian, and how Wei Wuxian (with one major exception) simply does not do the same. Wei Wuxian does whatever he thinks is right, and does not evaluate the collateral damage of those choices.
His major exception, his one major sacrifice that's done explicitly for Jiang Cheng, is something that he grapples with for the entire rest of the story and which Jiang Cheng is barred from knowledge of until the end, preventing Jiang Cheng from being able to feel that there's been any kind of reciprocity between them. From his perspective, he has given and given and given while Wei Wuxian has simply done whatever the fuck he wants forever, and the second that interfered with the Jiang Clan he... simply left the Jiang Clan. From his perspective, actively prevented from knowledge that would prove him wrong (which he WANTS, by the way, he WANTS to be wrong), Wei Wuxian has taken and taken and taken, and then fucking left.
Anyway they're both right and they're both wrong and I love their messy complicated relationship and the donghua's choice to put these two scenes back to back was HUGE brained

I think it’s both equal parts amusing and frustrating how people write Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian’s relationship in fanfiction because they clearly know how Wei Wuxian acts with the people he loves-
He’s clingy, teasing, praises them often, generally thinks the world of them and constantly says as much, always keeps their comfort in mind, and whines to them constantly about things that don’t really bother him because he knows they will indulge him.
-And yet they somehow fail to notice, even while including all these things into their relationship in their story, how Wei Wuxian fails to demonstrate any of these same actions with Jiang Cheng in the novel.
I wouldn’t say Wei Wuxian doesn’t care about Jiang Cheng at all but how he treats Jiang Cheng can really not be compared to the way he treats Jiang Yanli or Lan Wangji.
That play whining he does with Jiang Yanli and Lan Wangji? He does that because he trusts them to indulge him and receive the comfort and affection he’s asking for. Wei Wuxian complains to Jiang Cheng plenty but I can’t recall a single moment in which Wei Wuxian went to Jiang Cheng for comfort, support, or displayed any kind of vulnerability to him on purpose.
There’s isn’t even really any friendly bickering or teasing between them in the novel. There’s Jiang Cheng criticizing Wei Wuxian and complaining and Wei Wuxian waving off his comments.
Even Wei Wuxian’s biggest show of care to Jiang Cheng, giving up his golden core, feels to me like it never would have happened if Wei Wuxian hadn’t been raised to feel indebted to the Jiang’s and like it was his responsibility to keep the sect going.
It’s just… jarring honestly.

JC anti: "If Jiang Cheng knew he'd lose his core whilst saving Wei Wuxian, he wouldn't have sacrificed himself for him!!" "Jiang Cheng is so selfish!! He only thinks about himself!!!!!"
Meanwhile, this scene also exists:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bro jumped in the way of the core melter hand.. THE CORE MELTER HAND! He knew what he was putting on the line here, both in this scene and in the scene where he saves WWX. And yet he didn't think twice about doing it.. Why? BECAUSE HE FUCKING LOVES HIS FAMILY!!!!
Honestly, if you read between the lines and look beyond WWX's pov, you'll see that JC is actually one of the most selfless characters in the book.
He puts himself between others numerous times throughout the story without a second thought, be it to save WWX, save JL etc..
Granted, it's only for family and those he cares for. But that's okay?? How many of you will willingly take a bullet for your family? Or run out to fight enemies head-on just to keep your family safe?? How many of you will do all this for complete strangers?? Be honest.
