Aight, maybe I'm clinically paranoid or a little slow on the uptake (the former is more probable) but something just struck me about the episode Buried Secrets.
Donnie didn't believe Mikey, but he still went looking into Mrs. O'Neil??
Firstly, we can all agree that Donnie was bound to check out the data from the cryotube to figure out why Mrs. O'Neil was placed into stasis and left behind at the farmhouse (he's just thorough like that). However, what's interesting is that he doesn't seem concerned with the readouts until after he and the others had collectively yelled at Mikey for trying to attack Mrs. O'Neil in the dead of night. And, keep in mind, it was broad daylight when they found Mrs. O'Neil, still daylight when she told them her story, yet we don't see him messing with the cryotube's computers until nighttime.
Secondly, his demeanor towards who he believes to be Mikey is very unlike the rage he blasted him with during the interrogation scene (something that also happened at night but still preceded him checking the readouts). Maybe he's just in scientist mode and being civil, but other than appearing to be annoyed by the jump scare he received,he doesn't behave as though he's dwelling on what happened, nor does he add any input when April expresses her frustration like one would make him out to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thirdly, when Donnie speaks to himself outloud, he specifies that he's attempting to find out what the Kraang did to Mrs. O'Neil, not necessarily why she was left in the cryotube. The gang learned in the previous season from Kurtzman that April's mom was experimented on before she was born, therefore turning April into a Kraang-human hybrid. And now's his chance to finally find out what was done to her.
I know it's heavily debatable if Mikey influenced Donnie's decision, and obviously he could've been messing around with the cryotube's computer off-screen before Mikey tried to attack Mrs. O'Neil, but I'd like to believe Mikey's claims weren't being as readily dismissed as everyone thought they were being. As I've mentioned in another post, even though the boys have trouble believing everything Mikey says, they do have a tendency of checking out his claims in spite of their disbelief. The first and earliest example of this is in the first episode when Mikey tries to tell them the Kraang are alien robots. It's no surprise that they don't believe him one bit, though it is a surprise that they follow him anyway.
They saw how adamant he was in trying to prove he's being honest, and his urgency is enough to persuade them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though the situations vary each time, they continually do this all the way into the final season when Mikey claims to have seen the '87 turtles in their dimension. They question him again, not because they don't trust him, but rather to make sure he knew what he saw was indeed the other versions of themselves. After Mikey tells them the other turtles were taken to Chinatown, Donnie puts together that they must be the reason he was detecting energy from an interdimensional portal earlier, and they all go to investigate. Of course, it turns out that Mikey's eyes weren't playing tricks on him, and Raph makes a joke about Mikey being right again.
The guys have trouble accepting Mikey's words as the truth quite a bit, but the sheer number of times that they go running after him and giving him a chance to convince them is telling of how much they trust him.
As outlandish of an occurence as it was to believe that April's mom was the enemy, they all know Mikey well enough to give his words some thought, and Donnie likely took the unexpected attack as a sure sign that he should do some investigating of his own. Whether or not the others knew what he was doing in the Kraang ship is up in the air, but it'd make sense for him to be secretive about his actions since April would only get angrier at the idea of them not trusting her mom. That idea can potentially be supported by him obviously not telling her what he's doing.
Once again I've completely lost where I was going with this, but I like to believe that Donnie started to believe Mikey right before they were thrust into another horror night.

What Star Trek headcannons do you have?
*cracks knuckles* tng headcanons infodumping time (i havent finished tng yet but i have projected very very hard onto several characters and also made everyone on this ship bisexual bc i can)
picard:
worlds grumpiest polyam gray aroace bi man
i think if he had a grape fanta he would simply Die. not in a good way. actually any soda i think i could kill this guy with a baja blast
hes absolutely not dating riker but like half the ship thinks he is. also theyve screwed like twice but platonically dw abt it
hes dating both dr crusher and q. because i say so
riker:
TRANS MAN RIKER SUPREMACY!!! RIKER IS SO TRANS BC I SAY SO ‼️‼️
hes polyam and also arospec. i think hed like the label aroallo but gray aromantic allo bisexual is more accurate
hes dating like Everyone. data, troi, dr crusher, worf, geordi. my mans is absolutely rolling in romantic/sexual partners
he takes time to take every single one of them on dates catered to them and is absurdly romantic whenever he gets the chance. think rose petals and chocolate and violins
he doesnt ENCOURAGE rumours that he and the captain are dating but he doesnt DISCOURAGE them either
geordi:
pathetic little bisexual man. puts him in the oven
hes dating riker (everyone is dating riker lmao) and in a borderline romantic qpr with data (he calls data his boyfriend but also likes to clarify its not quite Dating since data is aroace)
data and geordi have sherlock holmes rp date nights. this one isnt even a hc actually pretty sure they literally do this in canon
worf:
aroallo bi worf is real and true i would know i was the enterprise
he acts like he hates rikers stupid romantic bs whenever he takes worf on dates (usually they end up just going to a holodeck and duking it out homoerotically afterwards anyways) but then he lays awake at night thinking about riker like 😳
i think he likes drawing skulls. i have exactly 0 canon to back this up but i think he would enjoy drawing skulls
data (can you tell hes my favourite lmao):
spends literal hours researching romantic/sexual relationships so he can be a good partner to geordi and riker even tho he considers himself aroace. usually comes up with something stupidly cheesy (even worse than riker) for dates and they both absolutely adore him for it
polyam aroace bi, and also he/him agender. because i said so
data likes to bonk his head on his partners as a show of affection. its like a kiss on the cheek/forehead except youre getting BONKED by an android
one of my moots (data la forge maybe?) said something about data purring and like thats actually canon as stated before i would know i was the enterprise
also he likes to lay his head on geordis lap. because I Said So
he is included in Girls Nights. he and keiko and troi and dr crusher all get together and he listens to their gossip while they paint his nails and do his makeup
troi:
troi tops. 100%
shes in a relationship both dr crusher and riker, and also had a thing going with tasha yar before she died
i think she considers herself poly bi with a preference for men, but she usually ends up in lasting relationships with women
i feel like she and riker are more of a qpr/fwb situation rather than a romantic one. theyre besties who are also soulbound and also love each other and also fuck nasty sometimes
dr crusher:
pansexual. did you see the way she literally did not care about gender when her parasite lover became a woman?? this is a pansexual
she likes helping data get ready for dates n stuff. they hang out in her quarters and she does his hair and picks out outfits and gives him advice
wesley:
him and his gf from that one episode (robin i think her name was??) are t4t. i base this on my Divine Intuition
summons a large eagle to carry him off into the night
q:
i want to call this man every slur i know. horrid creature. kisses him on the forehead
has no connection to gender identity or sexuality. hes probably aspec but identifies only as queer bc Q
he and picard have fucked nasty at least once. theres no way they havent

Ask me Anything -- Tal Smithson
Have you heard of the magical girl genre?
Fuck yes, have you read Sailor Nothing? World-changing. Preneek. Literature. I mean we only have two thirds of it but they were a great two thirds.
If you had awoken in Captain Aspen’s situation, would you have waited as long to wake others up?
I wouldn’t have woken anyone up. I don’t think it would even have occurred to me.
Do you feel more lucky or guilty that you’re the only one to survive your Ring’s ejection? Sorry if this one is too personal.
Why would I feel guilty? I was asleep.
If this is not too rude to ask, could you tell me a little about the Brennan gender identity, and grammar around pronouns?
I don’t know what you’re asking. It’s just a gender. Some people are men and some people are women and some people are brennan. And some people are something else I guess, like Aspen or the Friend.
Did you have any pets, or tend to animals growing up?
I had a pet monitor lizard named Cthulhu.
Have you done any work salvaging preneek data?
Yeah I used to be involved in tracking down and scraping old hard drives and servers for any possible recoverable data. Fillmore! Episode 5, Red Robins Don’t Fly? That was me. I found AND recovered that. You’re welcome.
Would you download a car?
I did once but the machine shop wouldn’t build me anything from unverified files. Also I don’t drive, obviously. Also I have nowhere to put a car.
What is Neocambrian meme culture like?
What’s meme culture?
Do you think the developments with Amy are as wild as I do?
Amy makes no fucking sense, my entire life since waking up on this ship has been a fever dream. In fact I’m not entirely convinced it isn’t a fever dream. Possibly I went to sleep and the neurostimulator started making me dream to preserve my brain on the trip and that’s what’s still happening right now. We’ll all wake up at Hylara super disoriented and filled with years’ worth of false memories.
What do you think should be done with the colonists that are too affected by Amy when the ship reaches Hylara?
It’s hardly up to me, is it? They’re going to die. I’m not a necromancer.
Do you ever worry you are in some sort of preneek science fiction novel, or movie?
What kind of weirdo would write something like this?
You are good at being a cybercriminal, how did you get caught?
The police, as it turns out, are also good at catching a cybercriminal.
If you could bring sometimes from earth with you, what would you pick?
Reget Bryce. Fucking arsehole. I hate that guy. He should have to be on this ship.
Do you want to give some of your dreams to Amy?
No, I’m very glad to have woken up before that could happen. Although maybe if she had a brain that knew literally anything about computers she wouldn’t be such a fucking mess in there.
What you hate the most?
People who think Star Trek and Star Wars were alternate names for the same franchise and totally fuck up our databases through unnecessary combinations. No Spock wasn’t a Force user. That took so many months to fix.
Are you scared of being made into a slave when you land?
I honestly don’t see how things are going to be significantly different to our current situation, except that we will be on the ground and presumably have less gaming time.
Kill someone innocent or be killed? Choose one.
We’ve got like four thousand spare innocent lives on hand, it’s not like it’s a limited resource. I probably will end up fucking up and killing at least one of them anyway. Just based on probability and this fucking nightmare of an AI.
Have you even be out of Texas?
Yeah I went on this submarine trip once to follow an old internet cable we discovered in the hopes that it would lead to some interesting server with some interesting information. It didn’t. It just lead to a small bunker from the time of the collapse, a seal had been breached and the entire thing was flooded. Nothing electronic was recoverable. There were some cool skeletons in there though.

ok, tng update time. friday we did "the offspring" and yesterday we did "sins of the father" and "allegiance."
the offspring: WHAT THE FUCK.................................
ok, as previously noted, this was the first episode of tng to make me cry for purely tng reasons (the bones thing doesn't count bc that's crying over tos, technically). i love data SO MUCH this episode was incredible
ok, admittedly, lal was a little hard to watch at times, the acting on her part was not super great, but the storytelling was very solid, and the situation data found himself in was such. a situation
i liked picard's arc in this, actually. he started kinda freaked out by lal and thinking of "it" as a poorly-thought-out invention of data's, and by the end he was fighting for her rights just as hard as he fought for data's in measure of a man, right up to being willing to put his own career on the line
the thing is, he was sort of correct...like, nobody else on the ship needs picard's permission to procreate (and what a wham line that was, even i had been thinking he should've consulted someone first before he did anything until he said that!!) - BUT because of data's unique situation and how tenuous it is that he even has rights as a living being at all, it puts him in the position of: if he does choose to have children, that child will immediately be in the same kind of dangers he himself has faced
also, how stupid that starfleet wasn't ok with having both androids on the staship when it was fine for the ONLY android to be on one...like, it kind of proves that a lot of people still don't think of data as being real or alive in their hindbrains, even if they use the right lip service. like i said, even picard AND EYE PERSONALLY were shocked he did this without consulting someone when we wouldn't have the same kind of shock if it happened to a human
though come to think of it i definitely don't think starfleet officers should be getting pregnant in space either no children should be aboard a starship human or not but that's a different story
it's WILD that she surpassed him, learned to feel feelings (and i still blame the starfleet dude for giving her a panic attack or w/e), and then he's got what's left of her in his own brain. 8in theory, he should know how to access a feeling...but can he, without being destroyed...that's twice now (her and raina) that we've seen androids be destroyed by their ability to feel emotion. i wonder if data realizes that what he seeks is actually very dangerous to him...
anyway, what got me was "thank you for my life." it was so short and most of it wasn't even fun but she was glad to have experienced it and AAAAAAAAA. god. 10/10
sins of the father: i was looking forward to this one bc of the title, and SO pleased it turned out to be good. worf fucking rules, i love him so much
i was so worried that secret brother was gonna be a liar or double cross him, because it seemed SO obvious, but once again i was pleasantly surprised not to be able to predict the plot (although i did see lal dying horribly coming from a mile off, lol).
my one gripe with this episode is that i wish riker had been worf's uh, i forget the klingon word but his second. picard is fine and all but he felt kind of redundant here. nobody needed him to be a captain and picard himself said he wasn't as young or as strong as another man on the ship, and riker having been exposed to klingon culture and also generally being down to clown would have been a way more fun choice. i also think riker would have objected more strongly to the ultimate resolution, and it would mean more coming from him to have told worf's brother "don't forget and don't let your children forget" because he would have been way angrier, and we rarely see riker with that kind of righteous anger that picard does so well. like, picard does it all the time so it didn't feel as noteworthy, but if riker had done it, it would have stood out in a big way
also, i liked the part where worf backhanded that guy bc he knew he was better than him lol
anyway i really hope that plot comes back someday, it fucked
allegiance: this episode fucking sucked. they strung us along for like 35 minutes without giving us any clues to solve the mystery ourselves and then revealed PICARD worked it out by using facts we don't know anything about
also, logistics. they have food in that place but i didn't see water or a bathroom and they were in there for DAYS
i didn't like the fake picard either...he was not very much fun to watch. him interrupting the poker game made me want to die of secondhand embarrassment. also, it was never explained why he wanted to fly the ship into a sun...whats the point of creating a double if he does suspicious and noticable things like murder-suiciding an entire starship lol
THAT SAID. this episode is saved from total dud status because of the mutiny. i LOOOVE when they do mutiny on star trek. this one was SO fun fake picard literally gave worf an order and he went into parade rest and stared into the middle distance and obeyed riker instead. WORF/RIKER/DEANNA IS REAL I'M TELLING YOU. whew <3

I swear, some of the rudest and most obnoxious MASH fans are the BJ fanatics. Heaven forbid some people just plain don’t like that character!
i received this ask last night and it's a perfect example of why i don't want to rehash the 'what episode do you start from' debate anymore, even from a purely analytical perspective. it is a discussion that is only pretending to care about situating first-time viewers. it's not about which cast you like more, because there's a negligible amount of henry vs. potter discussion out there. everybody acknowledges that it gets messy and needlessly upsets everyone, and it's always immediately followed up with a bunch of smug posts like 'the correct way to watch MASH is while your married same-sex roommate rails you from behind as your tent is being shelled' which would be funny if it weren't for the convenient timing.
for the record, i'm not saying there isn't a good-faith conversation to be had and honest arguments to be made or that the question should not be asked, i just don't think that is what happens. it's a ship war. okay, so just ask the real question: hawkeye/trapper or hawkeye/BJ. the problem with that though is that you'd have to actually watch the whole show to enter into that debate without feeling like an asshole. additionally, people would be more likely to point out that the resulting data is flawed because the question (like the 'where do you start' question) merely implies that you must've seen the whole show, and the sample contains a good amount of people who haven't seen the whole thing.
and i use 'feeling like an asshole' because it's a self-imposed expectation which is sometimes enforced by others. i personally believe it's completely valid to like one ship without even considering the other. i'm not sitting around all day getting my feelings hurt thinking about who's sucking hawkeye's dick, i've got bigger dicks that need sucking.
i could (and i do) look the other way on ship wars, but this is tumblr.com where people are increasingly inclined to justify their personal preferences by virtue signalling, at which point it becomes painfully obvious to me how insufferably white this fandom is. a bunch of white people sitting around talking about how hurt their feelings are by trapper and henry cheating on their fictional off-screen wives while potter calls klinger a donkey or a house pet and hardly anyone blinks.
and i've put my time in explaining why and how this is regressive and hurtful using patient, respectful, intellectual words. so if something somehow slips past my filters and i see the equivalent of '3rd wave intersectional feminists wrote welcome to korea' ever again i'm just gonna do as i always do in every arena of my life: mutter 'okay whitey' and move on.
anyway anon, i don't endorse these kinds of blanket statements even if i understand where they come from - and that's not to say i agree with what's you've said, it's just that if you're in a space with one dominant stance that you do not align with then yeah, you're gonna be annoyed. please do that somewhere other than my ask box.

1.) FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into "flight" or "fight 2.) MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them? 3.) CROWN - what does your oc want to be remembered as? why?
For Quintus!
😨 FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into "flight" or "fight"?
quintus' usual reaction to a threat is to shut down and put walls up. he's pretty distant most of the time, but in a pressured situation he gets even more so. "if i don't respond they won't realise they've got to me" sort of thing. however, there is a point at which even those defenses will fail and he'll snap and lash out. this hasn't properly happened in game yet, but i'm looking forward to when it does! there is a LOT of anger bottled up in this bland little man.
🌌 MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?
a number of concepts got smushed together to make quintus! a large proportion of his vibes come from radio-related stuff, especially number stations (specifically that one magnus archives episode! his surname is taken from the statement giver!) there's also a lot of more broadly maths-related stuff in there. i am no mathematician but i wanted to explore a more logical/academic character. on a surface level, his first and middle names are both mathematical - quintus is a number name, fourier is after the mathematician and also. four. that's a number. there's ALSO the mathematical/philosophical themes of his derangement and his "work". i don't know if i've talked about this much here but quintus is a firm believer in determinism, the philosophical view that all events are determined by previously existing causes. i do not know much about philosophy so i have been researching as i go to understand quintus' beliefs and the historical context of them better 😅 how this links back into the maths theme is due to his derangement! quintus believes in determinism, and he also believes that he is constantly picking up signals from the world around him (background noise, his radio, numbers written down or in speech). his "big theory" is that he can somehow gather and record all this data (what he writes down in his notebook) and plug it into a mathematical formula, that will give him... the answer? the secrets of the universe? if pressed, quintus doesn't really know what he's looking for. he just knows that it's important. this isn't entirely baseless, as he does have premonitions and visions from malkav - it's not an unreasonable conjecture that there are signals he can receive to calculate some greater answer. anyway this was a lot of rambling about maths and philosophy but quintus' whole vibe spins around this concept! i basically created his backstory and touchstones to support it and give him some more depth, but it's the core of who he is as a character.
👑 CROWN - what does your oc want to be remembered as? why?
quintus does not hugely care about how people in general remember him. there are three (3) people whose opinions he really cares about, and his legacy to them is less important than the connection they have now. i don't think he's really thought about what people would think of him after he dies? i don't think the idea of dying is one he puts a lot of contemplation into. too busy!

Reviewing Star Trek TNG - S3E24 "The Best of Both Worlds - Part 1"
Tumblr media
Ah, we've finally reached the end of season 3. Only took me...
Tumblr media
Christ, that hiatus did not help. Anyway, we're here now!
And yes, I'm splitting this across two reviews, cuz this is always listed as two separate episodes, plus the second part is the first episode of season 4. Even if there are versions of this which just stitch the two parts into a single feature-length episode.
THE PREMISE
The Enterprise receives a distress call from a Federation colony and arrives to discover that it has been completely removed from the landscape. They suspect that the Borg may be responsible. Despite knowing about their approach for over a year now, Starfleet is still unprepared for a potential invasion. Admiral Hanson (George Murdock) arrives with Borg expert Lieutenant Commander Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy, though how she can be an expert on the Borg when only one crew has encountered them and lived to tell the tale) to lead the investigation.
Meanwhile, Riker has once again been offered command of the USS Melbourne, and Admiral Hanson suggests that this time he take it. Knowing this, Shelby attempts to persuade Riker to accept the command so that she can replace him as the Enterprise's first officer.
MY REVIEW
In hindsight, it's a bit weird that an episode based around the Borg is technically a Riker episode. Fortunately the conflict between Riker and Shelby is entertaining, with Shelby reminding him of the kind of career-driven mindset he'd once had.
Tumblr media
The tension between them only increases when she takes Data down for an investigation without notifying him and confirming that the Borg were responsible.
“Data was available. I took him, we came.”
Tumblr media
Riker discusses this with both Picard - who advises that he reconsider his decision - and Troi. Riker notes that he's sacrificed a lot to get to this position - possibly even implying that he ended his romance with Troi, though it wasn't getting much focus anyway - and yet he continues to hesitate. Troi tries to reassure him that this just means he's more mature and comfortable with himself, but he's not entirely convinced.
Meanwhile, having received report of another starship encountering a familiar cube-shaped vessel before going missing, the crew is working around the clock trying to prepare for their encounter with the Borg, pushing themselves to their limit even though they have no idea if they'll even stand a chance. There's a sense of grim reality to the situation as Geordi informs Picard that it's really the best they can do.
Soon they reach their destination. Even with almost a whole season having gone by since their last encounter (hell, for all we know this could be the same cube), they still feel unprepared.
"Mr Worf, dispatch a subspace message to Admiral Hanson. We have engaged the Borg."
Tumblr media
Strangely enough, the Borg seem exclusively interested in Picard this time around, possibly even implying that they'll leave the Enterprise be if he surrenders himself. Though this is the Borg we're talking about, so that's very unlikely.
Picard obviously refuses, and we get our first proper skirmish against the Borg... which ends with the Enterprise failing to do any damage and Geordi being forced to evacuate the Engineering section.
Tumblr media
I know this GIF is tiny, but I put a lot of fucking effort into finding it, so it's going in, damn it.
The Borg traps them in a tractor beam, but the Enterprise is of course able to break free and flee into a nearby nebula, where they can hide from the Reliant- I mean the Borg without being followed.
Tumblr media
Have I mentioned that this episode does a great job at constantly escalating the stakes?
Speaking of which, Riker, Shelby and the engineering team realise that a concentrated phaser beam temporarily disrupted the Borg's systems. Geordi and Wesley propose that they fire the beam from the main deflector dish (which is currently the closest we've gotten to them bouncing a graviton particle beam off it), but Riker and Shelby clash over whether to separate the ship's saucer section, with Shelby so infuriated over Riker's stubbornness that she takes the plan to Picard, who tells them that her plan should be kept as a failsafe.
To be honest, I almost get the sense that Riker is disagreeing with Shelby purely out of spite, which I believe was the intention.
The two of them step into a turbolift, where tensions between them finally boil over.
Riker: You disagree with me, fine. You need to take it to the captain, fine; through me. You do an end run around me again, I'll snap you back so hard you'll think you're a first-year cadet again.
Shelby: May I speak frankly, Commander?
Riker: By all means.
Shelby: You're in my way.
Riker: Really? How terrible for you.
It's just occurred to me that is probably the most personality that we've ever seen Riker have. It's great.
One great scene is followed by another, with Picard visiting Ten Forward to talk with Guinan, being less than confident about their chances. Once again we get to see behind that stoic façade, the side he can't afford to show to the crew.
"I wonder if the Emperor Honorious, watching the Visigoths coming over the seventh hill, could truly realize that the Roman Empire was about to fall. This is just another page in history, isn't it? Will this be the end of our civilization? Turn the page."
Still, she assures him that no matter what happens, humanity will survive as her people did.
Tumblr media
Suddenly there's an explosion, and Worf calls Picard to the bridge.
Turns out that the Borg have found a way to fire upon them, and the Enterprise books it from the nebula. Once again, the Borg hits them with a tractor beam, this time beaming drones on board. Though Worf disables the first one, he and Riker are incapacitated by a second drone beams aboard and kidnaps Picard.
Tumblr media
That's right. The Best of Both Worlds ain't fucking around.
The Enterprise gives chase, unable to beam Picard back due to interference. It gets even worse when Worf reports that the Borg's current course has them en route to Sector 001 - AKA EARTH.
Over on the Borg cube, the collective informs Picard that he's been chosen to be a liaison between them and humanity and expedite humanity's assimilation.
I believe this is the first time the concept of assimilation is ever discussed. And speaking of firsts...
Tumblr media
"I have nothing to say to you! And I will resist you with every ounce of my strength!"
"Strength is irrelevant. Resistance is futile."
Tumblr media
The crew prepares to board the cube, with Riker remaining on the bridge while Shelby leads the away team - consisting of Worf, Data and Dr Crusher - armed with newly retuned phasers.
In the meantime, Riker informs Hanson of the current situation. The admiral tells them that he's gathering his fleet at Wolf 359 to make a stand against the Borg. And any fan of Deep Space Nine will know exactly how well that goes.
The away team heads over, with the Borg ignoring what they don't perceive to be a threat. They find Picard's uniform and combadge (which his signal had been coming from) but no sign of the captain himself. They destroy several distribution nodes and make the cube drop out of warp while Riker prepares to use the beam.
The away team disables several Borg before they adapt to the phaser frequencies, and finally find the captain.
Tumblr media
Well, shit.
The away team is unable to recover him, and they're forced to beam back so that they can use the weapon, since it'll be useless if the Borg regains their warp drive. Shelby suggests that they try to sabotage the cube again or consult with Admiral Hanson, but Riker refuses both options - they're simply out of time.
Suddenly the Borg hails the ship.
youtube
Look, as great as this cliffhanger is, I can’t help but feel like this could’ve been even more impactful if this was the first time we'd seen Picard in his assimilated form. Still, it's one hell of a way to end a season.
Fans back then had to wait four months for a resolution to this, while y'all had to wait four months for me to finish reviewing this goddamn season. It's sort of like poetry, it rhymes.
8/10 - A classic which deserves its reputation as one of the series' most popular episodes. But this is only half of the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is by far the most effort I've ever put into a single joke. I spent ages searching for the exact font (it’s called Ad Lib, BTW) just for a silly little review. And it was worth it.
But yeah, first imma do the season overview. That's going up tomorrow.

For the ship ask game: Worf/Bashir; Deanna/K'Ehleyr; The O'Brien's/Data; Kasidy Yates/Ro Laren!
Ooooh thanks for all these interesting picks!! (What I'm learning is, either you guys are just extremely good at coming up with ships, or I am a chaotic multishipper who will ship literally anything fhjdskhjfs)
Worf/Julian Bashir- ship it
What made you ship it?
That dart board scene from Way of the Warrior. I didn't even particularly want to ship it, I just have eyes😂
What are your favorite things about the ship?
Yes, Worf's canonical opinion of Julian is "He is a child who plays with toys", but I actually think- if the right situations arose and he got to see Julian as more than just "arrogant chatterbox" and "guy who still has feelings for Jadzia"- Worf would realise to his horror that Julian has a LOT of qualities he's consistently been shown to admire, even some he wishes he could exhibit so readily, like the fearless opposition of authority figures (remember the TNG s4 finale when the Klingon High Council asked Worf to kill that kid saying it was "the Klingon way" and he said "but it is not MY way"? Julian does this kind of thing all the time lol! And with little to no hesitation. Worf is rarely around to witness it, but it's so funny to imagine him being caught off-guard like 👀... girl that honour tho👀 👀)
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Idk if it's unpopular necessarily, but I love putting Worf in polycules and I disagree that he's too monogamous to make it work! I think Worf gets jealous and possessive when someone he's agreed to a monogamous relationship with starts flirting with other people, but if these were always the terms right from the beginning, he'd honour them. Anyway I enjoy a LOT of Worf polycules haha, but the ones that involve Julian are Worf/Dax/Bashir, Worf/Dax/Sisko/Bashir, and (my new personal favourite) Worf/Martok/Garak/Bashir. (Mutual who infected me with that last one, thank you, you know who you are😂)
Deanna Troi/K'Ehleyr- ship it
What made you ship it?
TROI: I didn't know it was possible for a human and a Klingon to produce a child.  K'EHLEYR: Actually, the DNA is compatible, with a fair amount of help. Rather like my parents.  TROI: I know exactly what you mean. My father was human and my mother is a Betazoid.  K'EHLEYR: Really? It was the other way around for me. My mother was human. You must've grown up like I did, trapped between cultures.  TROI: I never felt trapped. I tried to experience the richness and diversity of the two worlds.  K'EHLEYR: Perhaps you got the best of each. Myself, I think I got the worst of each.  TROI: Oh, I doubt that.
The first time I watched this, I took Deanna's comment at face value- but, both earlier and later episodes explicitly state that Deanna often felt out of place on Betazed, & her sheer discomfort every time Lwaxana comes on board (especially with the way she talks telepathically, which Deanna considers "rude") suggests that she isn't being completely honest here. Which is fascinating! (Truly, having 90s Trek women blorbos is taking inconsistencies and building elaborate webs of explanatory insecurities lmaoo)
What are your favorite things about the ship?
I am a sucker for alien cultures and worldbuilding and the internal worlds of characters who inhabit and oscillate between those worlds, & I've noticed most of the ships I think about a lot are either human/alien or alien/alien (I can project way more easily onto those haha). So Deanna/K'Ehleyr is a goldmine in that regard
(Also, I just love dynamics where a "tough" character has a surprising amount of respect for a softer, more empathetic character)
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I don't know the prevailing opinions on this ship, so I shall once again invoke the Worf Polycule Rule and say K'Ehleyr should have lived and been a recurring character and Deanna's "we hook up every time you're on board the Enterprise" and she and Worf would still have needed Deanna's help raising Alexander S5 onwards so this eventually would've led to Worf/Troi/K'Ehleyr
Miles O'Brien/Keiko Ishikawa/Data- ship it
What made you ship it?
I'm gonna be honest- I had never even thought about this before today, so it was in fact this ask that made me ship it. Thanks!😂
What are your favorite things about the ship?
Well, it allows me to reinterpret a lot of the early Miles/Keiko content in a less "traditional married couple" way, which- as presented on the show, always felt a bit dated for the 24th century lol.
Okay, I'm thinking... We know Keiko was Data's friend first, and it was him who introduced her to Miles, right? So what if she and him originally met because Data was experimenting with having a love life and Keiko saw his profile on Enterprise-D Tinder or whatever and thought "hey, that sweet android man from the arboretum! Why not?" And they ended up making dinner in each other's quarters, infodumping about plants, having sex a few times, no strings attached (I genuinely feel like Keiko would be one of the least weird people about Data's whole No Emotions thing). Meanwhile Miles is grumbling in Ten Forward after a music recital that his life is sort of at a standstill, and he's a bit lonely, he just wants someone to come home to- and Data (the only person listening, naturally, which leads to a one night stand lol) suddenly has the thought- why not set him up with Keiko? And thus- the iconic, infamous, two-show-spanning O'Brien polycule begins.😂 (Jokes aside, Data probably steps out of this arrangement after a bit, once he realises they are deeply in love and headed towards an eventual marriage-with-children situation, and that's how he ends up giving Keiko away at the wedding)
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Are there even... opinions on this one? I guess I could voice what is perhaps an unpopular opinion about Data, which is- I don't actually think he and Geordi ever slept together at any point during TNG. To me, they are one of those "they've never kissed but they are married" situations- like they are way too dependant on each other to risk their friendship like that! I do think Data could've been hooking up with more people than shown in canon, but it was always arrangements like this- ones he could end at any point with minimum damage and no hurt feelings. Geordi is much too close to him for this; but being the O'Briens' third from time to time? Definitely could happen
Kasidy Yates/Ro Laren- ship it
What made you ship it?
Writing a fic about them! (It is one of the many, many Fully Written Fics I Cannot Post, and I am so annoyed with myself hahaha)
What are your favorite things about the ship?
[spoilers for DS9: For The Cause and TNG: Preemptive Strike below]
They are both so unapologetic about their Maquis collaborations it makes me insane! Like, when Ben finds out, Kasidy is sorry about the lying to him part- but the show never makes her realise she was wrong to help those people, or even apologise to him. Same with Ro- when she betrays the crew, Riker just sort of understands (and doesn't even seem that surprised when she turns her phaser on him!) She regrets having to let them down, but not what she felt she had to do for the Maquis (and the Bajorans in it). It's really fun to imagine their paths crossing at some point- maybe Ro was captured by Starfleet and they end up in the same prison after 'FTC'; maybe Kasidy and Ben just never fully rekindle their relationship (not even necessarily because of her betrayal, there's also her clear disapproval of his actions in 'Rapture' and 'TDDUP' to consider) and she finds a much freer existence in the Maquis with Ro? (Breaks my Sisko/Kasidy heart a little, but still. It's interesting🥲) Of course, if we want a less messy more wholesome alternative, she and Ro only meet post-canon - Ro's lost her Maquis family and wants to help deliver aid to the Bajoran diaspora & victims of the Dominion War, Kasidy's trying to pick her life back up after Ben left her. They go on to have many adventures together in their freighter🥰
(The freedom they could give each other to be unrepentant about their criminal behaviour, basically! Literal #BeGayDoCrime ship)
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Despite everything I said above, I think they would actually have their fair share of disagreements. They're both in so much pain! Maybe Kasidy wants to deliver supplies to the civilians suffering on Cardassia Prime, and Ro isn't happy about it. Maybe Ro tries to comfort her with the idea that Ben's still around as a borhya, and it massively backfires. Maybe Kasidy finds Ro's guilt over letting Picard down grating, maybe she projects some of her anger at Ben onto Ro. They'd probably have a lot of weirdly cutting guilt-trippy arguments and passive aggressive makeup sex. But they would still give each other the space to talk, and cry, and like, be angry

SaL anon here friend and I'm glad I got my rage ask out yesterday because there is soooooo much good OG stuff to talk about!! Never thought these are things i'd get to say but Buck getting lightninged and Eddie screaming his name as he climbs up the fucking ladder to save him feels like fucking Christmas (bonus if he does it over Bobby's orders)!! We are gonna live on Monday, i can feel it. I scheduled my check-up that day so I have an excuse to be useless, no idea what I'll come up with for
Tuesday yet. And apparently I'll need a plan for the next week too since we're then getting coma!Buck imagining he was never a firefighter!! So here's some hopes/speculation on how this plays out. I definitely feel like we're going to get an appropriately traumatized Eddie in the first of these episodes (especially if he has to tell Chris), but maybe not as much in the 2nd (though if they don't take this chance to finally work in a Eddie and Maddie talk I'll riot) since it's KR, who the aftermath of Eddie's shooting was a perfect time for BT to get together (meaning I'm keeping my Buddie expectations tempered). But that doesn't mean there aren't other things I hope for. First, we can FINALLY get Maddie out of dispatch and interacting with the firefam. Even better if the Buckley parents are there and everyone just glares at them. As for the coma dream itself, i'd love it if this became a chance to refocus on Buck and Bobby's relationship. Hear me out, Buck might change his dream career but he can't change his childhood or how his parents act. So i'd love to see moments of Buck's dad being proud or giving advice in his dream it it comes out wrong, or goes against the things Bobby would say and Buck pauses and feels it's off somehow. Hell i'd love for the dream to have weird funhouse mirrors of everyone (like Maddie has a not-Chim husband who everyone says is funny but Buck just doesn't get why) but i'd really love to take the comparison between Bobby and Buck's dad specifically. And if this isn't what finally gives us some realization for Buck about happiness, and what that really means to HIM, I'll declare the writers and KR incompetent because the setup is RIGHT THERE. I won't speculate about how this could tie into that other thing, we are taking the next two episodes as a win!! Plus we have some new SaL songs coming and I can't wait to see if we can use them so good luck to us surviving!
Me, seeing your ask pop up and getting ready to indulge in some good old fashioned 911 feels:
Tumblr media
Like, what is even happening right now?! We are getting fed?! So well?! I don't even know what to do with all the excitement! I am going to be distracted Monday but I know I'm gonna be absolutely USELESS on Tuesday. If I was working at home at least I could pretend I was getting work done and not on my phone all day. No such luck anymore! 😭 At least my data will be back and I won't be yelling "let me iiiiiiiin" to my phone screen as ever screen takes 10 minutes to load.
So I'm also trying (and failing, badly) to manage my expectations re: Buddie because we KNOW KR hates those on-screen interactions and conversations and the 2 that came out of the shooting were not her idea to include. And honestly we have been begging for a Maddie/Eddie conversation since s2! It's tiiiime! If not now, then when?! I'm ready for it!! I'm also ready to see the firefam at Buck's bedside FINALLY which we haven't gotten since Bobby in s1 and even that had really weird "are they gonna put Bobby and Abby together?!" vibes. Still eternally baffled at what TF Carla was doing there to talk to Maddie instead of literally anyone else in the firefam who just rescued Buck. ANYWAY. Moving on.
I am DYYYYYYING for some Buck/Bobby father/son goodness and this whole situation better fucking deliver. That dynamic has always been one of my favorites and I HATE that s5 told us Buck called Bobby to watch Eddie but didn't SHOW us a single instance of Buck and Bobby talking about what was going on with Eddie. Jail. So I'm also hoping for some Bobby stuff around this whole situation and if it can contrast Buck's own parents? Even better. And I know we're all talking about Bobby but whooo boy do I want to see a reaction from Athena too. GOD if we get coma dream mixed with present day and get to see each of the firefam talking to Buck at some point?! Hearing them all call him "Buckaroo"?! I'm going to eat DRYWALL.
I'm resolutely NOT thinking about that other storyline because that does not spark joy, but I'm VERY interested to see what Buck learns about his life and the secret to happiness through all this. As for songs, I'm begging for "In Another Life" to give us the Learning Curve discussion of our dreams because it's RIGHT THERE. And as low as I'm trying to keep expectations, they cannot have Eddie screaming for Buck and putting himself in danger to rescue Buck and NOT give everyone ideas so.....*manifesting 6b 3rd party confession*
Cheers my friend, we are not ready for this!!

Digimon Ghost Game episode 29 thoughts + Fanart under cut cause man do I have thoughts and also the fanart is very spoilerly
Tumblr media
Did this in an hour while tired...I just had to draw something...
BUT ANYWAY EPISODE THOUGHTS CAUSE A LOT OF THINGS HAPPENED
-THETISMON EVOLUTION!!! Okay so most people have noticed, including me, that Thetismon is more "mature" or "calm" than Jellymon and that's So Interesting when we compare that to Kiyoshiro who got some good Character Growth in this episode, I love his and Jellymon's relationship...and also he's my favorite so it's really nice to see this.
-Actually Kiyoshiro in general in this episode is really interesting, glad they finally remembered Kiyoshiro isn't a coward all the time, even excluding integer overload moments, like at the start and end, which actually on Integer overload, it's interesting to note it seems like he momentarily forgets what he was doing, I think this happens during most integer overload moments but he does remember vaguely later on.
You know how sometimes when you go through something REALLY STRESSING you just, forget about it until something reminds you of it, it feels like that, it feels like Kiyoshiro fainted, adrenaline kicked in, then he realized a child is here and he's the only one who can do anything and just all panic thoughts got shoved to the side and then All The Panic Just Kicked In At Once.
Like previously in the episode and during the Toropiamon fight, that wasn't Integer Kiyoshiro, that was a very scared and panicked Kiyoshiro trying to keep up a brave face so he could actually Do Something, To Be The Person He Wants To Be, and I think this just makes more sense with what we've seen, especially in this episode with the "Genius" hero thing
And on the Genius thing....do you guys remember that Kiyoshiro graduated from American Graduate School and he's 14? I Do, We really don't know why Kiyoshiro is...yknow, a student at a Japanese School when he's already graduated and all that, and I know that Jellymon said it was because he read a bunch of manga and wanted to experience that (Which is...really sad when you think about it) so I'm just...70% sure there's more than that.
And I'm sure it's connected to the bandages in some way, we got some bandage teasing in this episode and I'm just waiting for those to finally get off his hand, Jellymon says he puts them on for said manga reasons, but I just feel like there's some sort of tragic backstory "Why Kiyoshiro Acts the Way He Acts" connected to it and the school situation and I Am Just Waiting, that hand has gotten way too much hinting at for it to not be important, the school not so much, but I just feel like there's some connection here, this is the series willing to threaten to eat the heads of these children, and also poison them terribly, and maybe freeze them to death, I would not be surprised if Kiyoshiro has some sort of trauma that he just, repressed really badly, I've been there, this makes perfect sense to me, still not sure what his hand is, but I'm just saying if his hand just doesn't exist and is made of data, or has a Digital hazard on it, I'll scream.
Though I would like to mention this caused me to make a crack theory/AU where Kiyoshiro is actually an amnesiac Lucemon that whoever Digimon God is here, turned human, I have only circumstantial evidence for this and it's super sparse, but I will die on this stupid hill. I will make art for this, the pure comedic potential of Digital Lucifer being this cowardly 14 year old who's being bullied by a sentient jellyfish is worth it.
-I actually don't have much thoughts about the digimon of the week, I like the story, it was tense, I liked the child, seeing Herrismon was nice. THE FACT JELLYMON IS ON THE GODDAMN NEWS FEELS EXTREAMLY IMPORTANT, Uh, I just like Kiyoshiro and Jellymon A Lot.

alright. gotta say this. I am super creeped out by the tng episode ship in a bottle. which I realize is incredibly funny to say considering the two episodes right before it. but this post is not about them.
so we get moriarty, right, a holodeck character from acd's stories who gained consciousness and wants to be free. picard knows this and acknowledges it. granted he only calls him a new life-form when he thinks moriarty managed to leave the holodeck, but him having this ability, having a physical body, shouldn't really matter; his consciousness, self-awareness is still undeniable. he is a life-form in a way the enterprise crew recognizes.
three or so episodes prior data realized lil robots used as tools have self-awareness, enough of it to have self-preservation. picard commands the robots stop being used during a super important project until they're able to determine if they really are conscious. the robots are recognized as a new life-form eventually and presumably are not to be put to work again, iirc.
and then they have moriarty. who passionately argues for his freedom. and yeah, I'm not saying he's like, good, he does literally take the enterprise hostage (but also they did kinda. leave him in a holodeck for four years. and he was apparently aware of the passage of time. i'm sorry but 'oh yikes sorry we didn't know' seems kinda funny here.) in the end they trick him and trap him in a simulation that he believes is real - which, fair, it was necessary to secure the safety of the ship. but then. then they stand around and joke about it, picard says how moriarty & another being like him are going to live their lives in this simulation unaware they've never really left the program, and that's it. they leave both of them there. problem solved. two apparent persons who desperately wanted freedom are forever trapped instead, made to believe their wish was granted. this is to be the fate of the new life-forms, that picard talks so much about discovering and how it's the enterprise's main mission (it is also literally in the epic opening of the show). moriarty should face consequences for what he's done, but with all rights and protections that are ensured for any other sentient being. where's the curiosity towards him?? concern for his self-determination??? IT'S STAR TREK I'M ALLOWED TO OVERTHINK THIS ULTIMATELY SILLY EPISODE.
I'm stubbornly headcanoning that picard was 100% truthful (and why wouldn't he be) when he said the starfleet scientists were working on figuring moriarty's situation out, and that they'll continue to do so. but even so trapping him like this in an elaborate fantasy that he so desperately wanted to escape is just creepy!! and an antithesis to the show's repeatedly established ethics!
anyway, holodeck is evil.

What if the writers at CME still are planning on Garvez being end game, but they're doing all this the draw it out. They know people love garvez and they're doing this to make people watch and drive up their viewing numbers? I could see that being true. I mean i kept watching before for Garvez, I'd still do it now if they left me with any hope
Hey, Anon!
I understand your (and even the point of view of many people) thought. I don't say I'm not agree with you, I mean, it's possible that they give us crumbs to make garvez shippers watch.
But, the thing, in my opinion... hope I will not seem "brutal", because it's not my intention, but I have to be honest.
I was talking about it yesterday, with @veronicafiore88 . I just guess, because I don't have any data. And I guess that we, the true garvez shippers were... not even a quarter of the whole audience who watches Criminal Minds (Evolution and the previous seasons). Maybe even less.
But. There is a but. If they finally make garvez totally canon (because for me is already canon, even the triangle thing that Messer mentioned in last article... is a weird way to imply they are (canonically) romantic involved...
Anyway, I was saying... if they would make garvez canon, I think that 90% (probably more) of public would be happy for that. They are funny and cute. It's a fact. I speak considering the tweets and opinions I read/saw in years about them, written by not garvez shippers.
But if they don't... the "not-garvez-shippers" would just say... "oh, too bad" and keep watching.
Like my mother. She thinks they are cute but is not crazy like me. She watches CM for the crime, as for the all CSI series. She can ship sometimes, but she focuses especially on the crime part. I started watch CM for same reason (I made her watch CM, to be honest XD) and then I fell in love with characters.
I know that I will keep watching until they are on the same series and both alive. This is my decision, but I understand who thinks the right opposite. I will watch it for the whole BAU family, for crime and for garvez. And if you read any of my post you know how much crazy I'm for them.
But I decided, in last years, to not let a show (and not also other things) take me down again. So, I just take the good things I get, I focus on them, instead of the bad. I swear I do the same in real life for harder situation. And it helped me a lot. Like, for last episode I thought, the day before: okay, so if we don't get anything, as I guess, I will not have to spend all afternoon making my analysis... but then, if we get it... too bad, I'd have to. 😂
This doesn't mean I'm totally happy that they decided to take this direction, when in 15x10 it seemed canon confirmed, and not only in the show, even in all the followed interviews. But I really enjoy to see them on the screen. And I think that we got a lot in this finale. From Penelope side. She is about to join him.
And... they are just working on the scripts... all is still possible. I just wish and pray that writers (and Messer) will understand that make them a real couple will not "ruin" their dinamic... I mean... they know how works a real couple? My husband and I have a garvez dinamic and we still teasing each other, arguing...
One Italian series (because if you don't know, I'm Italian) I watched, have writers with the same "concern". I mean, they were scared that putting the protagonist and the man that was in love with her since first episode (she reached him slowly) would make people stop to watch. That the pleasure was in the waiting. Then... don't know what made them change their mind. But they did it. They given us 1,5 season with them as a couple and... this was a partially crime show. The dinamic was still there. The protagonist is a teacher that ends to solve crime. She met this charming commissar and... you know. She made her life at risk many time. And... ops, she did it even when she was with him romantically. The dinamic changed, yes. Because when they were a couple, he had the right to be so worried for her, while, before... he could do just like Luke, holding himself to not do more (because she was married and has a daughter, but her husband betrayed her two times...). I lost the path, as always. The point is: the writers of this series got that couple doesn't mean end of teasing. I wish that CM ones will do the same.
And meanwhile I will rewatch garvez scenes many times and making my stupid and also seriuous stuff.

What makes you think Pulaski fits the definition of 'radical feminist'
I'd say the whole Kyle Riker thing kinda refutes that massively
No, I don't think so? Mostly because someone (Berman?) went out of their way to put a very 80's/90's feminism dialogue in the episode between Deanna and Pulaski about the MEN being STUPID. Also because she treats the relationship with Riker Sr as a sort of... I don't know. Sexlessly forbidden because... his adult son wouldn't approve? That kind of self-imposed misery and weird tension strikes me as very 'radically feminist'. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the Kyle Riker thing.
In general? She believes that she is right at the cost of all else (TNG S02E07 "Unnatural Selection") and refuses to listen to others when they disagree with her. I have talked about her treatment of Data before and her dehumanising behavior (TNG S02E01 "The Child", TNG S02E03 "Elementary, Dear Data") towards him. I was also kind of uncomfortable with how she was strongly leaning on Geordi to be 'normal' with the operation she suggested (TNG S02E01 "The Child") but that's something that has come up a few times. She was very much talking about the wonder of motherhood and femininity that Troi was undergoing, and was derisive of the security team setting up (and Data holding Troi's hand) during "The Child" despite it being a Weird Situation. Riker explaining his frustrations with his father led to her giving him her point of view regarding Kyle-- but what did that really add to the conversation besides her telling Will that he was wrong?
TLDR; the character is refuses to listen to other people's point of view, pushes her views on others, is generally dehumanizing of 'others', does the 'men are so stupid and women are so great' thing. Altogether, it does not add up well for her.
The thing is, she never apologized for any of her actions, or snide little comments. She was like, ":/ consequences" for "Unnatural Selection", but that was because she was looking down a barrel at death. She's part of the gang later at Data's going away party in "The Measure of a Man" (which is also an incredibly fucked up episode regarding Data's autonomy and I hate hate hate Maddox as a character but that's not the issue at hand) so apparently it doesn't bother Data or anyone else the way that she has behaved. This was just a Thing back then.
Anyway, as always, thank you for taking the time to talk to me! I really do mean that, and you can DM me if you want! This was a fun opportunity for me to look up episode names and numbers, instead of just being like, 'the one where there is a trial to see if Data has human rights or should die for the crime of not being human'.

tng update time, brief because i am BUSY. two nights ago we caught "contagion" together, yesterday i watched "the royale" on my own, and just now i finished "time squared."
contagion: don't know why this one was recced by so amny people because it was VERY boring. because it had romulans in it? it's not even unwatchably bad or anything, i just...didn't care
did like that the romulan commander was a woman though. just like the enterprise incident. where's spock when you need him
the archaeology angle was stupid. "oooh i have to go i've been studying them since i was a lad" you literally do not have to go "well china was thought to be only a myth until marco polo traveled there" bitch, not to the fucking chinese. get a grip.
the fakeout data death...girl we know he's going to be fine! i did like him throwing geordi around though he made the little faces <3 and i was very proud of him for continuing to work when he had a little computer virus. aw. maybe less glad that picard didn't give him any extra priase for doing so but whatever we can't have high expectations for this ep
anyway it was all just very overly contrived. and i was bored.
the royale: this had a great setup because i love when star trek talks about nasa. that made me really excited for what turned out to ultimately be a holodeck episode
played this one on 2x speed genuinely (my deepest dishonor - bad ones get 1.25x, really bad ones get 1.5x, and horrible ones alone get 2x speed)
like, if you changed it a little, you could say the holodeck is broken and won't let you out until you pretend to be investors and win big in the casino! it's the same thing. i guess they didn't want people thinking the holodeck was dangerous and unreliable, which it is
anyway, i liked data blowing on the dice. that was all though
time squared: this one blew my tits clean off. amazing. 10/10. it's like the immunity syndrome, enemy within, and doomsday machine had a time traveling baby
there is like a little bit of time travel technobabble that makes no sense whatsoever. and i did get the final twist spoiled for me. but it doesn't MATTER. neither of those things mattered because i was still sitting there with my jaw on the ground after the end
like, one website called this one confusing. sure yeah a little bit. they were playing very fast and loose with both their own rules established in the episode and the greater rules of the franchise as a whole. but the point is the character arc
like. picard sees himself make a decision that will destroy his ship. he sees himself fail utterly to do everything he holds sacred - he did not even GO DOWN with his ship. he is facing a matt decker doomsday machine of a situation. remember when kirk pitied matt decker because he saw his whole crew die and was helpless to stop it but was also a little put off by him because he couldn't possibly imagine himself in that situation? but with picard IT IS himself. it's green shirt john crichton and black shirt john crichton. they're BOTH the real picard but one of them has been through something unimaginably horrible
AND WHEN THAT PICARD. ENDANGERS THE SHIP. like. IN COLD BLOOD our picard chooses to kill him. and in my personal interpretation he thinks of it as mercy. but like he still shot him while looking directly at him and NO ONE knows what he did because he DIDNT TELL THEM except he called the fucking doctor for some reason
like at the end he's just staring out of a window. and riker is like hi im here to let you talk about it! and picard doesn't talk about it and riker goes away and in the end he is just staring out of the fucking window and they just ROLL CREDITS a real "anyway! these are the voyages of the starship enterprise" of a situation aka what i always loved about tos episodes (honorific)
i THINK this is a cross-section of drag me to hell and there was no laugh track but further contemplation required. straight banger i fucking loved it
i still have to do "the icaurs factor" and "pen pals" alone, but then we get to do "q who" together WHICH IS THE BORG EPISODE i cannot wait. nobody tell me ANYTHING.
