Another challenge from artfol! Argo is probably my only OC that went through a drastic change in hair lenght, so I though he'll be a good candidate for this (who knows, I may do some other ones if I'll feel like it).
He basically used to have very long hair, until he's become a Wanderer's Apprentice, and it soon turned out that he couldn't keep up with the maintenance. He ended up cutting them off, and never grew them out again. The 'longer' hairstyle box is how he'd probably look like if he kept them long. Which, coincidentally, makes him look uncannily similar to his father.

I dare you to let me go
(This is part 1 of my Jameson x Avery/angst fanfiction. I love Avery and Jameson but there's little to no angst fics of them so I'm writing this. Also, like I said, I'm an Avery defender but I'm tired of reading all the fics out there where it's all Jamie in the wrong. So anyway I'm done ranting, enjoy reading!)
JAMESON
Jameson was greeted with a cool breeze as he stepped outside the elevator into the foyer of the top floor of the building. It'd been quite some time since Avery started her own foundation named after her mother, but she didn't get a building for it until a while ago, which explained the unnatural shine of the place that only new things had. Like putting on a brand new fake smile.
Like right now.
Once upon a time, Avery had made Jameson forget what fake-smiling felt like. Every smile was real.
But that was a long time ago. Now it was only a fading memory he wanted and, at the same time, didn't, want to forget. He clutched the take-out bag tighter, as if they'd slip out of his hand due to how lost in thought he was.
You're fine. You're totally fine.
He didn't snap out of it until he got to Avery's office and knocked lightly. It was always very quiet on the top floor. Only the directors, Grayson, and Avery were allowed up here, the floors down below had the same loud chatter any other business building had. Avery's introverted side was one of the few things that stayed consistent over the years.
"Come in!" Avery yelled. Jameson stepped inside and saw her- face hidden behind the laptop screen, desk clad in papers, and empty coffee mugs- and sat on the chair infront of her. He plunked down the take-out bag from Avery's favourite restaurant.
"Oh thank you, Jameson. You didn't have to come all the way here though, you could've just sent it here with someone" she said, with what seemed like genuine gratefulness.
"I could've, but that would've marked the 12th meal this week that you hadn't had at home."
He said and smiled. He smiled now like he used to when he met Avery for the first time. Not that she noticed. How could she with all that work hogging her mind?
"I know, and I'm sorry. I've been too occupied. Turns out there's a whole pile of public proposals we hadn't received. Now I have to-" she carried on ranting while opening the take-out box. Jameson just listened to her fondly while eating too. He loved this side of her.
And yet.
And yet he felt so far away from her, like there was this massive, sprawling distance between them. When had it become like this?
Stop. Stop thinking about it. You're fine.
After they were done eating, Jameson pulled out a card and kept it on her desk.
"I brought this for someone turning 22 tomorrow. Have you seen her?" He said in a playful tone.
"I might have." Just as she was about to pick it up, Avery got a call and had to go to the floor below. She gave him a perfunctory kiss and ran left.
------------------------------------------------
"This has to be the most romantic rooftop dinner plan ever," said Lyra. Although the newest addition to the Hawthorne family, Grayson's girlfriend Lyra Kane had grown on them all a lot in the last few years. He wouldn't admit it, but he really liked being family friends frenemies with her. She was infuriating, in a good way, just like Grayson. Perhaps that's why they got together in the first place.
The rooftop; complete with glowing fairy lights, roses everywhere, Avery's favourite cuisine, and wine, of course; was missing one thing- one person. His riddle for her had been fairly simple, too simple for her. She should've been out of work and here by now.
She'll come.
"You got her palm fruit?" Lyra asked, slightly weirded out, "nice. After eating the palm fruit, maybe she'll let you palm her-"
"Stop right there" Jameson held up a finger and gave her a look.
"Alright. No palm fruit puns for you. See you tomorrow. Have fun!" she drawled dramatically as she climbed down the ladder back into the house.
---------------------------------------------------
12:18.
It was 12:18 am. 18 minutes past midnight and over four hours past the time Avery was supposed to come.
Maybe she's stuck in traffic, he thought as he drowned the rest of his wine. After everything was ready, he started drinking a little to pass the time. He was used to waiting for Avery by now. The unopened wine bottle was a great vintage, Avery liked it a lot. He had brought it up there unopened, now it was almost empty.
"Hey," came a low, sweet voice. Avery's voice would've sounded sweeter in that moment. Unfortunately, though, it wasn't her.
"Avery texted. She had to fly to New York. She can't come back in time. I'm sorry."
She isn't coming.
The realisation hit him like a kick in the gut. Jameson sighed. "You're leaving something out, Lyra, and I'm way too drunk and way too tired to guess what it is. Spill."
"She told me she's going to make it up to you."
Ah, well.
She may as well have told him pigs can fly.
That's how much of a lie it was. Just another formality. How many times had she said it before?
"Why'd you get Avery palm fruit anyway?" She asked, trying to change the subject.
"She loved it on our last trip to Indonesia"
"Four years ago" she said, no, whispered it, "that was over four years ago. You know, when you actually spent time together."
She stared at him silently while he was searching for an answer. She wasn't wrong. Everyone knew that recently his relationship with avery had been… dry, Lyra just had the guts to say it, unlike his brothers.
"I'm fine. We're totally fine." He finally said, got up and started climbing down the ladder.
"Okay. Sure. Keep lying to yourself. But tell me this, how many times have you had your heart broken over the last five years?"
Jameson swallowed.
"I don't know."

The F@tT Fic Marathon: Catching up finally.
🎉I have officially read the full Friends at the Table AO3 tag!🎉
My very silly quest has reached its technical end point after EXACTLY 10 months of intensive reading! It has been sometimes grueling, often delightful, and led to me developing intense opinions in directions i never thought possible to myself. But I have done it, and I am extremely pleased with myself.
To get some housekeeping out the way, I usually give recs upon a writeup, but since there were only three fics left for me to read i'm just gonna shout them out generally.
Fics 1981-1983
Tumblr media
check out i'm too scared to say half of the things i do (when i picture you) by waltztangocache for partizan era Kal'mera Broun fantasizing about Valence and trying to keep from letting that slip through their telepathic bond
and if you like Christmas fic, fangirl_squee has got you covered with Fero "not liking Christmas" but being roped into it anyway, and the Bluff City Masks crew hunting down some Christmas mini-miracles
and like, if you're looking for something to read, remember every single writeup has come with at least one personal recommendation. it's all under the tag #fatt fic marathon (also a caveat that these recommendations come from my personal tastes, i might not have mentioned a fic during the marathon that's a favorite of yours and i hope you continue to deeply enjoy what you love even when it might not have hit where I would have liked)
if you would like to take a look at the massive spreadsheet I used to keep track of which fics I was set to read together, as well as other info like what season it was for, and word count, here is a link to it!
What next?
First of all, I'm gonna spend a good long time reading other things. I've accumulated a great big To-Be-Read pile of pleasure reading consisting of both real-ass books and other fanfic that have been put at a lower priority while I powered through this project. I have had fun, but it is high time for a Break to read and do other stuff for a bit. (*glances nervously at my unstarted secsam project*)
If you happen to like my thoughts about what I'm reading, this past year I tried to keep track with reading log posts. They got stripped down to the basics over the course of the year and Finals Season sorta took it out of me so there's nothing for the past couple weeks BUT. i like reading a lot and i like talking about it a lot. so that's all tagged as #cal reading log if you want to keep up with me and my reading
and, what shall happen to these writeups! I'm not interested in continuing these in perpetuity, but I may give a final send off one when the tag hits 2000 (i'm still deciding). otherwise, this is likely the end of them. I might still shout out inidivudual cool fics that get published as I read them, but that's just like, good fandom practice to spread around cool fanworks tbh, rather than this weird thing I've done. nonetheless, i hope y'all had fun watching this journey
and a final thank you to all of the lovely authors who have made fanfic writing their hobby and have chosen to share what they write with others. Thank you! it is extremely obvious that I could not have done this if they never put pen to page or fingertip to keyboard and did the dang thing in the first place. you've made some cool stuff and i like reading it.
Happy New Year Everyone!

ATBB's Future
Hiiii y'all, its uh. been a minute huh
Now that it's been a bit over a year since I put this blog on hiatus, a loootta stuff has happened and changed and i've been doing a loootttta thinking!
Looking back on it, like really really looking, my biggest reason for the hiatus was that at some point the blog just kinda became more of a chore than something I wanted to work on for fun. Ask blogs are a lot of work, even when you're just using talking portraits rather than drawing out every individual answer, and with how much ask culture on tumblr has died out over the years there just wasn't really enough payoff to make it feel worthwhile to keep burning myself out.
I think it's a really good thing I stopped it when I did, because having to deal with all that in my senior year of high school would have been a nightmare. I've actually just finished up my first semester of college now, and there's no way in hell I would've been able to keep up at any rate! With all of this in mind, I've gained a newer perspective about how to approach things going forward.
I'm still really attached to this story. With how much time I've spent thinking about it and developing it in my head, I can't let it go, even if the blog isn't really working out anymore. I keep thinking of different ways I could fix the decisions I made early on, as well as the super cool directions I could take it in in the future, and I just. I GOTTA.
So, I've decided to reboot it entirely as a fic series!
This means that, unfortunately, there won't be nearly as much artwork to accompany it, but it's far more likely for the story to actually progress! Writing is way less draining for me and once I get going I can do it much quicker than art anyway, even though I do still sorta wish I had the spoons to just turn it into a full-blown webcomic instead haha
This DOES mean that updates won't be nearly as linear as they were here, seeing as right now I've mostly been working on backstory fics that took place before the blog's main story, but that can at least give you guys more context for how the characters interact with each other! I'll also state that while I do write faster than I draw, I still do it a hell of a lot less, so updates will still probably be pretty infrequent. But at least they'll happen at all, right?
As for the state of this blog itself, obviously I'm going to leave it up! I still love looking back on the old interactions you guys had with my characters and your reactions to certain plot points (your reactions to Fluff tagging along with the rest of the group were my favorite by far) and I think it would actually kill me to erase them. I'll be posting the fic updates here too, just like I did for Self Hatred!
And even if it's not going to be an ask blog anymore, because of how much I still miss that kind of interaction with you guys, I think I want to do a sort of "last hurrah" event, to finally send off the asking format with some good vibes.
You see, there's a character I made up around this time of year two years ago. He's a pretty cool guy, but he doesn't actually show up until a specific turning point later in the story. I've been excited for you guys to talk to him since the day I made him, but a little bummed lately that you may not ever get the chance. I still need to get a lot of stuff prepared, so I'm not quite ready to announce or start anything just yet, but there's a reason I waited until my winter break to start thinking about this seriously.
I think you guys would really like to meet him.
But anyway, that's about all I wanted to say for now! This is a very long post already so it's time I start wrapping it up. As always, thank you all so much for sticking with me, even though I really haven't been consistent through the years. I hope this change doesn't come as too much of a disappointment, and that you'll keep sticking around for the reboot!

Becoming Elizabeth: the autopsy
I just realised I never did a review of episode 8. Lol. Lmao even. This isn't an episode review but rather a discussion of the show upon rewatch.
Basically this is a show where the whole is not equal to the sum of its parts.
When I talk about the problems with the writing, I generally mean the narrative choices. The literal writing itself is good. Particularly for Tommy S, because those funny and witty/endearing lines explain his charm and why he is able to win over people and make them think he's a nice guy he's a funny guy he's a lovable rogue he's an adventurer. Tommy S does need to have some charm/charisma in order to be an effective villain. He can't go around being obviously evil.
There are still too many F words, but i was pleasantly surprised that there weren't as many as I remembered. And some F words I couldn't bear to part with: "The fuck is that?" And "what the fuck is wrong with you?!" In episode 5 for example.
I've seen some people say that the quality of the writing dropped in the episodes that aren't Anya Reiss but.... I think the quality of the writing was consistent. The iconic "I wish to take my c***ing bath" was not in an Anya episode, and neither was one of my favourite scenes in the whole show (yes it's the Dudley swordfighting training scene but it's an objectively good scene and not just because it's cute boys in fencing gear).
I initially thought episode 7 was my least favourite episode, but looking back there isn't really a good episode or a bad episode. Every episode has something I like and a bunch of stuff I'd change. If I had to pick 2 favourite episodes I'd pick 1 and 6. But because the problems are with narrative choices they're spread across the series. Even in episode 1, we have Elizabeth "I said at 9 i didn't want to marry so a lot would need to happen to change my mind" Tudor suddenly deciding she wants to marry a man she barely knows because hormones and they had a nice conversation one time. The rot set in quickly.
After the first four episodes I started skipping Mary and Tommy S scenes. I won't say any more on Katherine Parr because I've already said all I have to say on her characterisation. I did do some soul searching because I wondered if my dislike of her was subconscious internalised misogyny, given my affection for morally ambiguous male characters. But no, she really does lack both charm and depth.
So why is Becoming Elizabeth so narratively unsatisfying? Aside from Elizabeth being OOC, I think it's that the story feels like it's going around in circles.
Jane and Elizabeth clash. They make up. Then in episode 7 they fall out again. Mary and Edward fight, make up, fight, make up, fight again. Elizabeth realises Tommy S is dangerous, then she forgets, then she realises again. Mary scolds this character and they don't listen and then this character and they don't listen.
Yes character development isn't linear but it isn't circular either. It GOES somewhere. Setup and payoff are mutually reinforcing. It's fun to watch the setup because you know what's coming as a result of it. Payoff is fun because you saw how we got here. But it isn't satisfying to watch something that you know won't result in anything permanent. I don't feel anything watching Jane be tactless to Elizabeth in episode 1 because I know she'll be even MORE tactless in episode 7. And I don't feel anything seeing Elizabeth reach out the hand of friendship to Jane after the recital fiasco because I know in episode 7 they'll just fall out again. Whereas with Mary and Elizabeth they at least end the series with their relationship in a different place (hell).
And I have every sympathy with the writers because I'm up to my eyeballs at editing and I know what it's like to take historical events and try and make a plot and character arcs out of them. But the letter subplot and the Danish marriage subplot were largely fictional anyway. And they kinda went nowhere.
I understand that the showrunners wanted a complex villain in Tommy S. I get it. My favourite characters in this show are people capable of great love and also great harm. But to humanise him you only really needed that conversation with Elizabeth in episode 1 establishing his uncertainty and confusion, and the excellent "goshawk hatching out of a goose egg" scene with Jane. That establishes that he has the ability to be good he just chooses to be awful. So yes, the show really did give him too much screen time. He's not the main character, Elizabeth is! He should not have screen time comparable with her and her siblings! This wasn't supposed to be the Tommy S show! Nobody asked for that!
Gardiner is another problem IMHO. Setting aside the fact he's way too young to be the real Gardiner. He really shouldn't be here. He spent Edward's reign in the Tower. I know he shows up as a result of the fictional plots... so why write those fictional plots to the point you have to bring him in?? Cranmer IS important. You could have had Cranmer pushing Edward to be radical, Ed pushing him to be more lenient, and Daddy Dudley balancing the two. Voila, a dynamic!
And I get that Elizabeth wasn't doing much politically 1550-3 but you could still show her reacting and learning from events around her rather than warping Edward's reign completely out of shape AND making her a side character in her own story.

a/n : my previous rindou fic got overwhelming likes thankyou sm 😭 so here another rindou fic hehe <3
summary : just wild dancing with rindou in the club (inspired by)
youtube
Tumblr media
wc : 821
roppongi was ruled by the haitani's. the siblings was the leaders of the pact there so when you stated your intention to have fun time at the party, your boyfriend rindou agreed to it. except that, it wasn't fun and he was guarding your drink all the time so you won't be too drunk.
"rindoun c'mon i've been drinking coke all the time" you complained when another coke was served to you on the bar. he took the glass and pushed it in front of you. "i don't know what you're saying, i just don't want you to get too drunk. you're horrendous when you're drunk"
he said while sipping the alcohol in his hand. it isn't fair how he could drink the substance but you couldn't when you've been wanting to loose some screws in your head. upon drinking too many coke, you stand to head to the bathroom. by the corner of your eye, you saw rindou following you. "it's okay rin, you can see the bathroom from here i'll be fine" you assured your boyfriend.
you knew he was doing this because he was worried you might bump into some shady guys in the area although no one was stupid enough to mess with rindou haitani's girlfriend.
after using the toilet and sighing heavily, you were washing your hands until you saw a cup of liquor on the sink. you were so curious of how it tasted like, one sip couldn't mean any harm.
"woah there sorry that's my drink" a girl approached you while holding a blunt on her hand. "oh sorry, i was curious how it taste like. my boyfriend doesn't let me drink"
"excuse me?" her friend, you assumed asked you while staring at you through the mirror. she was holding a red lipstick and a small pocket mirror. it's then you realized that the girl had her own group consisting of four to five people who had drinks in their hands.
"wait hold on that can't happen stay here i'll grab something from the bar to freshen you up" the third girl said, makeup in hand. "oh you poor thing, came to the club but couldn't drink. you know what? ditch your boyfriend for a bit, hang out with us" one of them said while fixing her lashes.
"i don't think i can. my boyfriend is like right there watching the door. he'd noticed" you heard she said a tsk before suggesting "then let's get you drunk here"
you drank at least five shots of the strong liquor with them in the bathroom and as they were very chatty, the water was affecting your system pretty quickly. you were giggling a lot so they smiled at you sweetly "oh look at you all red. let's get you back to your boyfriend, he must be worried" she held your hand but you refused. what's the use if you came here but didn't had fun anyway.
meanwhile outside rindou was talking to ran until he heard a commotion on the dance floor. he didn't mind it, it was normal to him anyway. but something caught his attention. a short figure wearing a black dress was wildly dancing and he didn't need to glance twice to confirm that was indeed his girlfriend.
he rushed towards you who have been swaying your hips to multiple directions while bobbing your had to the music the dj was playing. rindou tried stopping your body from moving but you caught his hands and placed them on your waist while you slithered your arms on his neck. he saw in the club lights that you were red all over leaned towards you "how many have you been drinking?" he asked with a frown. you giggled "mmf enough" you answered with a playful tone.
the dj then changed the music to an edm song. it was one of your favorite songs so stopped your movement and bent over a bit to take off your heels. bare foot, you jumped with the bass boost of the song that was echoing while offering rindou another hand of yours. "c'mon, rinnie the night won't last forever" you said with hiccups.
rindou that tried to drag you back home gave up and just danced there with you. everyone in the club was jumping to the exciting beats of the song and one of the people there sprayed a bottle of beer on the dance floor. rindou was lifting you in the air since you were two seconds from collapsing but you were the most happiest at the moment. happy, with your boyfriend, in his arms. rindou was content on seeing your face.
you couldn't sleep last night and talked all night long when rindou took you home. he kissed your forehead and put a blanket on your body which you snuggled comfortably. he'll return next morning because he oh just knows that you'll have the heaviest hangover.

You always say you're going to take me there for dinner and then you always cancel at the last minute
man, husbands of river song is going to pull a double by giving me a character-farewell that I... actually like. for a character that I've criticized pretty heavily. twice in a row, who'da thought, but yeah this episode, like hell bent, is messy, but it's mostly enjoyable messy rather than nonsense messy, youknow?
anyway, brace yourselves... I'm about to give a m*ffat episode... a good rating
sexism rank objectification (female character is ogled/harassed/turned into a sex joke by the doctor and/or a lead we’re supposed to root for and/or the camera): 5/10
sexism rank plot-point (lead female character is only there to serve plot, not to have her emotional interiority explored, or given agency to her emotional interiority): 7/10
interesting complex or pointlessly complex (does the complexity serve the narrative or does it just serve to be confusing as a stand-in for smart, this includes visually): 7/10
furthers character and/or lore and/or plot development (broader question that ties into the previous ones, at least two of these, ideally three should be fulfilled): 7/10
companion matters (the companion doesn’t always have to be there, but if the companion is there, can they function without the doctor– and overall per season how often is the companion the focus or POV of the story): 10/10
the doctor is more than just “godlike” (examines the doctor’s flaws and limitations, doesn’t solve a plot by having it revolve entirely around the doctor’s existence): 9/10
doesn’t look down on previous doctor who (by erasing or mocking its importance, by redoing and “bettering” previous beloved plotpoints or characters, etc.): 5/10
isn’t trying to insert hamfisted sexiness (m*ffat famously talked a lot about how dw should be sexier multiple times, he sucks at writing it): 5/10
internal world has consistency (characters have backgrounds, feel rooted in a place with other people, generally feel like they have Lives): 6/10
Politics (how conservative is the story): 6/10
FULL RATING: 67/100 (if I can count….)
see what I mean? messy, but fun. also greg davies is there, mostly yelling and being large or uh... being a disembodied head and still yelling
OBJECTIFICATION: because this is a river song episode, it does unfortunately fuck up on this point again, because if there's one constant for river song episodes it's that she's Sexy in a dom mummy kind of way, but it's Empowering because she's the one who casually dismisses and objectifies men, she ooowns her sexuality, which just so happens to be the kind of woman that m*ffat thinks is hot
it's actually not so bad once you get past the first bit of it. once the doctor and river song are in the tardis things get a lot better and then stay relatively even for the rest of the episode. and then the ending is. actually quite moving
PLOT-POINT: this could go both higher and lower. lower, because I think if there's one thing that bothered me throughout river's whole narrative it was the way she clearly never had a positive view of her relationship with the doctor, always defining herself as someone who couldn't help but love someone who was so far above her, so brilliant, so amazing, so extraordinary, that nobody could hope to be on their level -- not to mention all the stuff (which isn't in this episode thank goodness) about how once the doctor sees you age, it's over
and now we've reached the end of the story, this core of river, the whole... thing of having been groomed from birth to revolve entirely around the doctor, to never feel worthy, to think the doctor is just plain "too good" for her, is confirmed for good to be simply the way this story is, without further analysis or deconstruction
that being said, this episode gives us more crumbs than any before. the doctor is incredibly kind towards river, in a way I don't think eleven ever really was outside of a small handful of moments, and it's confirmed that they've been avoiding the singing towers and that if it were up to the doctor they'd never go there, but then the universe decides on it, so the doctor pulls out all the stops (in a doctor-like way, not in a "godlike unknowable being" type way) to make it a good last time for them. so in that sense, this episode manages to be all about river in a way I don't think any previous ones have been
for once it's the doctor revolving around her, not the other way around. this also further by showing little tidbits into river's life outside of the doctor, and the doctor being confused (and jealous, sure, but... ehhh lower-and-higher rating, it's complicated, it's kind of het but also kind of not) about her sheer amount of other spouses that she never mentions. so the doctor is crashing into her adventure basically, not the other way around. if this had been the template for river song episodes, i might have liked them better. the closes we get to something like this is back in s5 with flesh and stone/time of angels, but after the beginning it very much became about the doctor and not about river. this story is firmly river, the entire way through. all it took was for it to be her very last flipping episode
COMPLEXITY: I'll call this one doctor who complex. it's silly, it has various locations, kinda takes you for a spin, but it's quite simple and doesn't try anything clever where it's not needed. this episode is a romp, and it remains a romp right until the end, where it's a sweet story about a long long goodbye
CHARACTERS/LORE/PLOT: river song has gone to the library to die. i don't think this technically means she could never come back, because m*ffat utterly fucked the whole "we meet backwards" lore. they definitely just meet out of order, not in strict reverse linear order
but. but. I get that this is the big goodbye, you'd want it to remain that way. also it introduces nardole who is with us throughout s10
I don't... love nardole. i think he was good comic relief for this episode, now that I'm watching s10 I think he's too comic to be able to carry the dramatic scenes, but yeah. he's fine here
COMPANIONS MATTER: it's fuckn river song's episode, we're just gatecrashing it! this will be the second time (after the girl who waited) that this point gets a rating like this, and while there have been a few scattered episodes with 7/8 ratings, it on average sits firmly at a 5 or below so just... bask in it for a second after five seasons of companions being sidelined the majority of the time
“GODLIKE” DOCTOR: the doctor is doing some smart things here and there, but again, it's firmly river's episode and that's really really ever-more striking the more I think about it. so much of this era of doctor who consists either of The Doctor Is Always The Centre Of The Universe Narrative type episodes or the doctor enters someone else's story and then takes over
it's so very refreshing for the doctor to let river do her thing, it's what we've been told is so great about her as a person, but I think far more seldomly seen
PREVIOUS DOCTOR WHO: there's a lot of river-and-doctor history which, because river only really occurred multiple times in eleven's arc, means we don't actually go back very far. it is one of those things that weakens river's character, and yes yes I know in audio books she meets previous doctors (further weakening the whole "meeting in reverse linear" idea), but in the show she never does, making it odd that she'd be prepared to meet any of the other faces
I think river could have been so much stronger as a character if she'd not been presented as The character. the one who knows the doctor best, who is the best, who was created For the doctor, etcetc. broken record I know. but it's little things like this that hammer it home
and ofc we already have this character, it's the master, and gomez!master provides a far more compelling "version" of what they were trying to do with river being a mysterious femme fatale. there were just things that could have been done differently to ground her more, and that feels very obvious when trying to do callbacks here and you're like... your callbacks happened two-three seasons ago
actually noticed just now that the master and river never met, which also, the other thing being that river is very disconnected from the rest of doctor who mythos. sure she's mentioned to know various aliens and she's there in the pandorica episode, but her main stories aren't ever putting her in a wider context of the story. if river song episodes were totally excised, then apart from the odd mention of the doctor having ostensibly been "married" she may as well not exist
“SEXINESS”: there is some stuff. Idk whether this belongs in objectification as well or not, but m*ffat gets some last digs in with his favourite historical women he loves to objectify, because the doctor married Elizabeth 1st, Cleopatra, and Marilyn Monroe -- these were all eleven-doctor episodes, so more of a uuuurgh in hindsight about some of the ways this was written, because flipping 12yr old looking eleven was too much to resist for these women.
I lie, because actually Elizabeth married ten (in day of the doctor, so eleven era), but it was an egregious mischaracterisation of ten as well. and ofc. the fuckn jokes about all of that. finally, Elizabeth the first, whom I have no flipping opinion about usually, because who tf cares about the royal family (well, apart from the Shakespeare play versions of them + Lion in the Winter), is free from this hopefully
there's a bit of "sexy voice" going on at times, but that's just par for the course with river song episodes, and again, it's not too egregious in comparison to usually
INTERNAL WORLD: yeah, fun, silly, simple stuff, good times good times. nothing massive and complicated, but then steven not everything needs to be so damned massive and complicated all the time, does it????
POLITICS: still question the politics of river and guns. will do so forever. look, i know the doctor isn't so pacifist as all that, but there was a lot of gun-related arcs in nu!who era that was often quite complicated (for example eleven in town called mercy or twelve in hell bent) and it never seemed to apply to river
it's actually another way she sometimes felt disconnected from everything else. there's doctor who with its themes, and then there's the doctor and river adventures, and they never quite meet up
there's also ofc the ongoing silliness of "marriage as concept" and unexamined amatonormative + heteronormative ideas, but like. do I expect them to know what that means, never mind how to do an interesting exploration of relationship dynamics unless it's by accident? so I take what I want from it on that front
FULL RATING: 67/100 (if I can count….)
on the whole a fun episode and I was very prepared to not enjoy it, because I haven't been the biggest enjoyer of river song as character in the past + I obviously am not a fan of attempting to make the doctor alloromantic, which arguably... they also didn't manage to do
and if that felt strong with eleven, oh boy does it go through the roof with twelve! now I've had "aplatonic doctor" as concept put into my brain, it applies so strongly to twelve (as well as eleven) and I can absolutely read this episode through that lens and come out with a great deal of enjoyment for it
on the whole, this is a story about the doctor doing things for river, which is a rarity. it's a fun adventure between the two of them, which is also rare. and it's a neat little exploration on the themes of ending and putting off that ending (which also exists in clara's story), and how endings may be sad, but there's all the bits that come before that and that's important. and also ofc it's slowly gearing up to saying goodbye to this era's doctor -- the ponds have left, clara has gone, and now river...

So I just read that scare actor eddie fic nad it was awesome, I loved it.
And it got me thinking of reader being really scared of Haunted Houses and Eddie being really excited to go to one so she convinces her to use a remote control vibrator to distract her and make the experience more enjoyable 😉
iiiiiiiiiiiii went overboard and i hope that's ok. also this has been all i've thought about since you sent it and i would've written for it sooner except this was a week from hell and i didn't have time to write until tonight (even though i should have used tonight to try and catch up on nanowrimo OOPS) ANYWAY PLS ENJOY THIS (it had a mind of its own when i started writing it so it's a bit much...)

You’re currently holding Eddie’s arm in a death grip for two reasons. One: despite how much you hate horror and are a wimp with scary things, you let Eddie convince you to walk through a haunted house with him tonight. Two: despite you saying that you will go for him but won’t enjoy it, you let Eddie convince you that said Haunted House would be more enjoyable if he held the remote control of the vibrator currently situated between your thighs.
“It’ll be nice,” he said with his chest to your back. “You’ll be distracted enough to enjoy walking through the Haunted House with me.” “But Eds, I don’t know,” you whined, looking at him in the mirror in front of you. “For me?” he asked. His head rested on your shoulder. “I don’t want you to hate it, let me help you enjoy it.” You watched in the mirror as his hands moved from your hips to your panties. Fingertips slipping past your waistband, palms following, warm and gentle as he used two fingers of one hand to open your lips and uncover your clit. His other hand placed the small vibrator in just the right position to press against your bud when he removed his hands and cupped your sex over your panties. He met your eyes in the mirror and kissed your shoulder. “I’ll put it on low so you can get used to it on the drive over, ok?” You nodded. Mouth dry, you licked your lips and swallowed, “when will you turn it up?” Eddie smirked. “When I think the time is right.” He turned on the vibrator as soon as you got in the car, making you yelp at the new sensation. Sitting was…good, but not good as it put more pressure on the vibrator than just your tight black jeans had. You tried not to shift during the car ride, and Eddie noticed. You’re pretty sure he didn’t go slow over potholes or speed bumps just to get a reaction out of you. There was a particularly harsh bump that he hit at almost full speed that had you gasping and moaning at the pressure and friction on your clit. One hand shot to the door and the other between your legs before you squeezed your thighs together to try and chase the pleasure that was starting to be a low thrum in your stomach. Eddie tried to hide his laugh, and when you looked over at him he had the biggest smile on his face. You pulled your hand from its place between your thighs and punch Eddie’s shoulder. “You did that on purpose!” Eds broke out in a full laugh at that. “I want you to be having a fun time before we get to the Haunted House. Had to do a lil something to get it going.” You laughed with him and soon after you were pulling in to the parking lot.
The thrum in your panties was indiscernible to anyone who passed the two of you but consistent to you and not enough. Eddie had helped you out of the van and you had yet to let go of his arm; the constant stimulation beginning to make your head fuzzy and your hands itch to help chase your pleasure.
The two of you were standing in line. Entry was staggered so no groups collided as they walked through.
“Sorry folks, no more after this couple,” the entrance worker said to the small group coming up behind you and Eddie in line. “We gotta close up for the night after they get their walkthrough.”
Despite your pleasure warped mind, you clear your throat and ask, “how long is the walkthrough? And are there any scare actors or is it just rigged jumps?”
“You’re a lil on the scared side aren’t you? There are 7 rooms, usually takes around 30 minutes for people to walk through depending on if they have any easily scared people. Those groups can be out as soon as 15 minutes since they usually run after the scared one,” the worker laughs. “No scare actors, just rigged stuff. Y’all will go in in about 5 minutes, we give everyone 15 minutes between just in case there’s a runner.”
Eddie rubs your hands resting on his arm as you wait. “Ready?” He asks, searching your face for any hesitation. “Comfortable?” He whispers with a smirk.
You gasp quietly as the vibrator moves up to the next intensity. You shift on your feet, biting back a moan as you nod yes to Eddie’s questions. The vibration is more than before; not by much, but enough to have your thighs clenching.
“Alright, lovebirds, go ahead. Door is gonna shut behind y’all. So don’t be alarmed.”
Eddie walks first, almost dragging you in since it takes a minute for your feet to work. As soon as you cross the threshold the door behind you shuts with a loud bang making you jump.
“My little scaredy cat,” Eddie coos, leaning down to kiss your temple. “Don’t worry I’ve got you.”
You walk together in silence for a bit before a skeleton pops out of the wall to Eddie’s right. You jump away from Eddie and scream—of course—but that scream turns into a moan as the vibrator moves up to the next setting: a stronger vibration that now pulses on your clit.
Eddie smiles mischievously as he pulls you back into his side by your belt loop. You lean on him as pleasure courses through you with every pulse between your thighs. “You’re doing so well,” Eddie praises. “We have to keep walking through, baby.”
You’re holding on to Eddie’s arm much more than before as pressure builds and the coil in your stomach begins to tighten. The next room brings another jump scare, scream and new level of the vibrator.
“Eddie,” you moan and grip his hand harder, as the pulse pattern changes and the vibration speeds up.
“How’s my girl, holding up?”
You realize now that every jump scare and scream means more torturous stimulation to your aching clit.
By the 4th room, you’re knees are wobbly and its hard for you to walk. You’re on the precipice, thighs clenching in an attempt to reach satisfaction. Eddie notices and pauses your walk through the house. He pulls your face towards his before shifting his hands to your ass to pull you against him. He dips his head, taking your lips in a soft, knowing kiss as he presses the button on the remote control again putting the vibrator a mother level higher. You moan into his mouth and come undone, his hands on your ass and your hands on his shoulders are the only think keeping you standing as you ride your orgasm through.
Eddie pulls back from this kiss and your head falls to his chest as you try your best to steady your breathing.
“Good girl.”
You hum, hands twisting in Eddie’s shirt as the vibrator continues to assault your now oversensitive clit. “Eddie,” you moan.
“We have three rooms left baby you can make it.”
You whine but let him take your hand and lead you to the next room.
Another room, another jump scare, and another level on the vibrator. The stronger vibration has you cry out in pleasure and slight pain, Eddie pulls you to him and kisses the moan from your lips. “Gotta be a little quieter, sweetheart.”
“Eddie, baby. I need-“
“What do you need?” He asks as he holds you close and leads you to room six. With the thrum between your legs, your eyes closed and Eddie’s cologne in your nose you don’t notice the jump scare in this room so he didn’t tick up the toy in your now soaked panties.
“You, I need you.”
“Fuck baby,” Eddie groans. “That’s fucking hot. We’re almost out okay? Then you can have me, promise.”
“Promise?”
“Yes baby.”
Eddie moves the two of you quickly through the last room, eager to get you out of the Haunted House he so badly wanted to go through. As soon as the two of you left the last room, Eddie hollered a “good night!” to the workers and you headed quickly back to the van. He helps you into passenger side before hopping into the drivers seat and starting the engine.
“Don’t wanna make too much noise here baby so I’m gonna drive us to the lake, its only 5 minutes away okay?”
“Mhm,” you moan. Eddie looks over at you and catches you grinding down into your seat to get more stimulation from the vibrator.
“Fuck, okay okay were going.”
Eddie speeds to the lake, finding the nook where you’ve parked multiple times to make out and make love when Wayne is home at the trailer.
As soon as he parks and turns off the lights and engine he’s unbuckling both of you and grabbing your face in a heated kiss. It’s all tongue and teeth and wet as he helps you stand up and backs you into the back of the van. Eddie’s hands move in a flurry, shedding you of your jacket and shirt and him of his own. He kisses down your neck as he unclasps and removes your bra, moving his way down to kiss your now bare breasts. He drops to his knees, kissing just above your pants button as he works to rid you of your jeans, leaving your panties on.
He stands, reaching into the pocket that the vibrator’s remote control had been stored after each jump scare and turns off the toy. The onslaught of stimulation to your clit ceases but the pressure from the toy itself still sits heavy at the apex of your thighs. Eddie then removes his own jeans. Though your mind is fuzzy from continuous stimulation you notice his erection straining against his black boxers. Your hands move to stroke him through the fabric but he catches your wrists before you can.
“Let me take care of you baby,” he says laying you on the blankets that always line the floor of the van. Eddie kisses your lips and then kisses down your body, pausing to lavish your tits with wet and warm kisses and light bites; sucking on your taught and sensitive nipples until you’re crying out for him.
“Eds please.”
He continues his kisses down your stomach, stopping above your panties. You lift your hips as he pulls them down. Vibrator leaving its place against your clit as he does, you whimper at the loss.
“Fuck these are soaked,” he groans and then looks at your bare pussy. “Poor abused little cunt.” He runs his thumb up your folds, putting a little pressure on your engorged clit. “Did so well with that toy between your lips, huh? My good girl, you want something else? I can see you clenching around nothing, you want my big cock now?”
“Please,” you beg, hands reaching for the waistband of his boxers. He removes them and strokes his already hard cock a few times. Eddie leans above you while he runs his dick between your slick folds, grinding down on your pussy, the head of his member catching on your clit  and eliciting a moan from your kiss-bitten lips.
“I’m gonna slip in so easy, won’t I baby? You’re so wet, fuck.”
Eddie captures your lips in another kiss and you swallow each others moans as he enters you to the hilt in one thrust.
“Fuck, you’re so warm,” he groans as he pulls back to thrust in to you again. “Always so perfect for me.”
“So full, Eds,” you moan in response and wrap your legs around his waist, the new angle letting him hit deeper. “You feel so good.”
He pistons in to you deep and hard, quickly finding and continually hitting your g-spot. His heavy balls slap against your ass with every thrust. Already close before from the vibrator, your second orgasm of the night hits you like a freight train. Eyes screwing shut as you clench and flutter around Eddie’s cock. Seeing white behind your eyes, you’re moaning Eddie’s name over and over like a prayer.
Eddie fucks you through your orgasm and keeps going, chasing his own and determined to get you to finish at least one more time tonight. He leans down to kiss and bite and suck on your nipples and the swell of your breasts. Your hands tangle in his hair and pull his mouth to your own. Sloppy kisses ensue between heavy breaths.
When his lips and teeth nip at your neck your nails rake down his back, surely leaving marks and definitely making him moan into your skin. The soft mewls and quiet noises leaving your parted lips have Eddie lifting his head to look at you. Eyes closed, mouth open, cheeks pink and forehead wet with sweat; you look cock-drunk and fucked out and Eddie spurns on, thrusting into you at a rough pace.
The air is warm and full of sex, and all you can hear are the wet sounds of Eddie’s cock moving in and out of you and both of your heavy breathing. As Eddie’s thrusts begin to falter and slow, he reaches a hand between you to rub rough circles into your abused clit.
“Too much, Eds,” you whine and try to push his hand away. “It’s too much.”
He moves his hand back to prop him up and uses his non-dominant hand to hold both of your wrists above your head before placing his thumb right back onto your bundle of nerves. “You’ve got one more in you. I know you do baby. You gonna be my best girl and come for me one more time?”
Eddie’s deep thrusts and relentless touch have you convulsing in pleasure as your third orgasm hits and you gush around his cock one more time. Your pussy tenses around him and Eddie’s hips meet yours as his own orgasm hits, filling you up with spurts of his cum.
He kisses you, his lips hot and red, as he slowly pulls out. You can feel your mixed releases dripping from you and making a mess on your thighs and ass. Eddie reaches over you and under the backseat to pull out another spare blanket to use to clean up. He wipes you off first in soft, gentle strokes before cleaning his softened member of your release.
Reaching back under the seat again, Eddie pulls out a small duffle bag and removes a clean pair of boxers and a clean shirt. You sit up and he helps you into the boxers and slips the shirt over your bare chest before putting his boxers and pants back on.
“What are these from?” You ask, looking down at the Hawkins t-shirt you now wore.
“I always keep a spare pair of clothes in here just in case I get too sweaty at the gym or have an unexpected sleepover.”
You laugh, “with how many times you’ve slept over unplanned that makes sense.”
Eddie helps you stand and then sits longways across the backseat with his back against the wall of the van and pulls you between his legs. You lay your head on his chest and cuddle together.
“Love you, bug,” Eddie says, planting kisses on your head. He laughs lightly, “thank you for going to the Haunted House with me.”
“Love you, Eds,” you respond, lifting one of his hands from its place rubbing circles on your stomach to kiss his palm. “It ended up being rather enjoyable,” you laugh.
You sit and hold each other in silence for a few minutes before settling back into your seats and heading to the trailer to sleep.

Most-Listened of October 2023
(via stats.fm/spotistats)
[last month]
What a sleepy month... as in, I've been sleepy and haven't had much interest in new releases. (Except IVE. I have been listening to wayyyyyy too much IVE.) Hopefully I'll have some energy back in time for the RV album, and to really enjoy the Weeekly comeback (finally!!!) that just happened!
1. Lux Aurumque -- Eric Whitacre, Eric Whitacre Singers
Eric Whitacre (and a song from the same album as the last one, too??) on the top of the list two months in a row! Deserved. This is basically the same song as "Sleep" for me, but they both have just so much emotional value so I don't really mind!!
2. Invisible String -- Taylor Swift
This ended up being a theme song for my big creative writing project this month--I really don't think I've gone a day without listening to it, and I'm still not tired of that soft guitar. It’s so perfectly cozy :)
3. Either Way -- IVE
Another theme song for the writing project--I love how this song proves that sounding ‘gray’ doesn't have to be unappealing. If you liked this, you’ll probably like Dvwn’s “Yeonnam-dong”!
4. Siren -- Taeyeon
I hate that this song perfectly captured my mood for more than half of October, but thank the gods I had a song that described that mood perfectly!! If I’m stuck feeling stressed and glum (a REALLY weird combo), at least I have Taeyeon to keep me company :)
5. Chili -- Hwasa
This was GREAT. I mean it’s me, so I'll listen to Hwasa sing anything, but this instrumental really hits, especially compared to the abomination of an instrumental that was "I Love My Body". With the killer combination of Hwasa & the beat, “Chili” was an instant 'leave on repeat until I can no longer physically stand it' classic.
6. Here We Go Again -- Jini
I talked about this album, right? It carried my month!! It's not my favorite of the year--there are definitely some really messy parts (that I think will get worked out in Jini’s discography over time)--but the commitment to making catchy, energetic songs that feel mature but still youthful, and to keeping a consistent aesthetic throughout the album, is something I really appreciate. This is my favorite song from it--Jini does a great job with such a fun chorus! Can I call this my favorite NMIXX song?
7. Bad Reputation -- Jini
MORE JINI !!! The way the piano in the instrumental reminds me of Katy Perry's "Roar" is unfortunate, but "Bad Reputation" is too genuinely sweet for me not to enjoy. I LOVE TOO LITTLE JUST A LITTLE TOO MUCH <3
8. Thursday's Child Has Far To Go -- TXT
Sorry, new TXT album. I'm happy with my comfort song!!
9. Psycho -- Smyang Piano
Writing project soundtrack! This has been on one of my favorite lofi mixes for forever, but I never bothered to seek it out on its own until this month--I'm so glad I did!
10. Teenage Dream -- Olivia Rodrigo
Writing project soundtrack! A solid 3/5 for good atmosphere + some standout lyrics!
11. Quimera -- Alba Reche
One of my favorite songs of all time, here to make the cold-season days a little bit softer, as it always does. At this point, "Quimera" is a seasonal tradition for me.
12. Biriken -- Creepy Nuts
Creepy Nuts!!! Okay, so… I don't enjoy this song, like, at all, but I keep finding myself drawn to just how intensely it makes me feel. I find it so viscerally terrifying and unpleasant that it's much more compelling than a lot of other songs this month! And I think that's what really made me a fan of Creepy Nuts in the first place--I find their music so interesting, even when it isn't pleasant. I can’t look away, and that’s what happened with “Biriken” this month.
13. Mr. Blue Sky -- On The Rocks
This a cappella arrangement is so glorious. Like oh my GOD if I still did arranging, I would be taking notes on every second of this. (I'm still probably taking subconscious notes, anyway, considering how many times I've listened to it this month.)
14. Pink Venom -- Blackpink
I really don't remember listening to this one that much? But I do love it--it's my takeout cheeseburger of songs, and it's always a good fast-food meal.
15. Big It Up -- Ailee
This song is fine! I like it a LOT more than the title track, at least.
Five-Star Songs This Month:
Chili -- Hwasa (yep this is back! favorite release of the month, sorry IVE & Sunmi I STILL LOVE Y'ALL I PROMISE)
Holy Moly -- IVE (had me from the moment that low drum kicked in. even the weird glitch sound in the chorus doesn't faze me anymore!!)
Wonderland -- Aimer (okay this is late. i've loved the walpurgis album since it came out, but i didn't appreciate this song specifically until a walk a few weeks ago--and now it feels like a crime not to give it five stars.)
Dalala -- Yuju (can't believe i missed this when it came out?? this is my "off the record." yuju makes every song feel so high-class, so impeccably put-together, just by being on it.)

I survived my visit to Plastic Beach
all i got was employment...
Anyways, minor update, I got employed, and I work evenings, these posts are now going to be more prone to changing post time, but they will still be out every week.
Tumblr media
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 out of 5 stars)
Yeah, this album is a Gorillaz album, there's so many things to love and every song is unique yet ties in so well, lots of great names on this album too. I had a lot of fun!
Pretty much, if something is a 5 out of 5, I do see myself consistently coming back to it over time; as I see myself in the future with this album.
The big reason I had never properly listened to this album was that my parents did not have the CD and therefore I did not know this one existed until I was given internet access and I wasn't all that interested once I did. (Don't fight me but I've only really heard self-titled, Demon Days, and Cracker Island, and of course now, Plastic Beach)
Opinion Time! (as always, album order, not exactly any ranking order)
Briefly interupting my opinions I would like to share I will not be counting the orchestral pieces on this album within my rankings, they hold a special place in my heart and I love all of them, they all win/hj
"White Flag (feat. Bashy, Kano and the National Orchestra For Arabic Music)" is a super cool track, it has a lot going on and I find it to be pretty much the identity of this album. It's super cool, it incorporates everything on this album really well, and it's a super cool way to expose the setting of the album. I like it a lot, I like the orchestra stuff on it, I find the lyrics to be quite clever while still being cheeky and definitely Gorillaz.
"Superfast Jellyfish (feat. Gruff Rhys and De La Soul)" I pick out because I like the rap portions and how they work with Damon's choruses. I think this is another very Gorillaz song and it's very fun to listen to. I like that it has lots of noises and how they work in the song as well as the effects used on Damon's voice for the last chorus. I love music that sounds weird, you can't blame me.
"On Melancholy Hill" I picked out because I think I would be crucified if I did not. It's one of the big Gorillaz songs, and I'm kind of surprised I didn't know it better. It's a cool song, much more mellow (hah. I guess why/rh) and I like the role it takes on in the middle of the album and how it flows into "Broken". It's also nice to see a just Damon Albarn/Jamie Hewlett song. Damn good synths on this track too.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
OK, I have a lot, this is a long album with loads of good stuff.
"Rhinestone Eyes" has lots of good sounds and noises and the melody in the "That's electric" portion on this one gets stuck in my head
"Stylo (feat. Mos Def and Bobby Womack)" I like the chorus on this one, I enjoy the whole composition n this song and the LAYERS wow.
"Empire Ants (feat. Little Dragon) I gotta give the song with a Latin beat a shout, I like the way it uses it in a more subtle way, it's fun. I also love how tender this sound sounds and then the transition and juxtaposition to Little Dragon's section.
"Some Kind of Nature (feat. Lou Reed)" I just love how their voices mesh together and I like the piano on this track.
"Broken" I like how it flows from "Melancholy Hill" I think it complements this song really well, yet it still is distinct in its identity.
"Sweepstakes (feat. Mos Def. and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble) has more noises and I just love how this one sounds, it's eerie in a really good way. I also love the band coming in at the end, this song sounds so full in the best way.
Yeah I like Gorillaz, shocking./j

《我是歌手》 Season 1——Thoughts and Feelings
I finally finished rewatching 《我是歌手》 season 1. It only took me 4 months...
Anyways. I've put together some thoughts I have on this season (with some spoilers about eliminations and whatnot).
Here's a link to the YouTube playlist of every performance from this season (I'm pretty sure I got them all). It's 111 videos. For some reason, the 芒果TV account had like none of 羽泉's performances posted (maybe a copyright thing?), and they were missing a few other performances, so sorry if the quality on a few of the videos isn't the best. I went with the best versions I could find on YouTube.
Here's where I watched this season. It was actually kinda difficult to find a place to watch this season for free; a lot of the other seasons were on YouTube for free when I first watched them (though some have been removed since then). Thankfully I found this site, and the quality is really good. There's some funky sound editing moments, though it's unclear if the original recording is bad or if it's the video on this site. Either way, it's the best quality version I've found to date.
Also, advanced apologies to any 沙宝亮 fans out there.
The singers in this season all seemed to be more established and well-known. I mean, 齐秦 alone is wildly famous, and then there’s 羽泉 and 黄贯中 (from Beyond). That’s not a bad thing, since all of them were really talented. However, I personally think the show is at its best when there are a few newer or lesser-known singers thrown into the mix. It makes the competition even more unpredictable, and a lot of these singers bring some pretty unique performances to the stage. I think the only reason I have this preference and this stands out to me is because I watched all the other seasons before season 1, so my expectations of the show had already been set based on what they’d done in later seasons. So I’m not judging season one too much for this, and I understand production would want to do what they could to ensure a decent viewership.
One of the things they did this season that never shows up again in other seasons is have one episode where everyone spins a wheel and picks their next song that way. I thought it was an interesting one-off episode idea, and it gave us a lot of great performances. It pushed some of the singers kinda far outside of their comfort zones, and I always like to watch when singers pick challenging songs. A really great episode came out of this idea. As much as I love the singers getting creative freedom, sometimes it’s fun to watch them struggle a bit. Idk, maybe that’s mean of me to say lol
There was also one episode where each singer picked one of 齐秦’s songs to perform, and it was sort of like a tribute episode since he had to leave the season early? And at the end 齐秦 performed his return song, which he never got to do when he left. I liked this episode since I’m not super familiar with 齐秦 (I’m more familiar with his sister, the absolute goddess 齐豫), so I got to hear more of his songs. As much as I liked it, I don’t know if it’d work every single season.
胡海泉 was also a really good host. I found all of his mistakes really relatable because I, too, cannot fucking speak.
In terms of the singers, the ones who stood out the most to me were 林志炫, 黄绮珊, 尚雯婕, and 杨宗纬. I already knew about 林志炫 and 黄绮珊 before starting this season, so I knew what to expect from them. Every performance from 林志炫 was perfect (what else would you expect from the One Take King?), but my favorite performance of his (and actually of the whole season) was 《没离开过》. 黄绮珊 was also really great to watch. Even though I personally didn’t like a couple of the songs she chose, she was consistently killing every performance, even when she was sick. 尚雯婕 was pretty unpredictable in terms of genre, but I liked a lot of her performances. My favorite from her was 《Dog Days Are Over》, and I think it’s a shame she didn’t get to perform that before she got eliminated. She was really creative with her picks, and I really respected the risks she took even if I didn’t fully enjoy it sometimes. (Also, she was definitely this season’s fashionista. Those shoes, man) 杨宗纬 was a really unexpected favorite, since he wasn’t around very long before the resurrection round. But he really chose some good songs and put his everything into the resurrection round, and kinda won me over at the last minute.
The rest of the singers were good, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say I really loved or hated them. With one exception, that is.
Tumblr media
沙宝亮 is a very talented singer, and I think he put on some very good performances. However. I personally could not stand the man. You know how sometimes you just see a person, and immediately think, “I do not like this person”? No good reason for it, there’s just something that you personally aren’t a fan of? Yeah, that was me with 沙宝亮. Every time he was onstage, I felt uninterested. Each time he spoke on camera, I did not care. This man did nothing particular to earn this from me, yet here we are. I was glad when we didn’t win the resurrection round, only for him to come back and torment me in the final episode. Despicable. Since I just spent this whole paragraph trashing him, let me be kind and say his performance of 《Someone Like You》 was quite good.
Now that I’ve discussed all the singers, let’s give out some “awards”.
My favorite performance: 林志炫《没离开过》
Best Fashion Moments™: 尚雯婕’s ensemble in episode 7 (非常的French), 沙宝亮 in episode 9 (it was just ugly, sry), 周晓鸥 in episode 10 (that snakeskin vest? thing? was a Choice), 黄贯中 in the resurrection round (zero effort put in to covering that tattoo and it’s pretty funny imo)
Best hosting moments from 胡海泉: episode 1 mixup between 字zi/zhi, episode 3’s ze样一首歌, doing tongue twisters as prep in episode 4, this quote from episode 5 “看完明姐的表演,我宣布辣妈时代正式到来”, and episode 10 when the subtitlers really committed to spelling out every mistake he made
Most noteworthy episode: episode 5 (lots of great performances, the aforementioned 辣妈时代 comment, the lights in the confessional scene needed to be adjusted bc 周晓鸥’s bald head was too shiny, the guitarist Tommy was not wearing glasses/sunglasses which dealt me a deep psychic blow. 我是歌手 superfans will understand)
So overall, I did enjoy this season. I liked a lot of performances, and hated very few. Even though it was pretty good across the board, I don’t think it has a lot of rewatch value for me. There are certain seasons I know I’m excited to see again (like seasons two and three 👀), and I don’t think this would be one of those. Instead I’m probably going to just return to a few standout performances and rewatch those (I’ve already watched 《没离开过》 an embarrassing number of times).

Davies era recap?
sorry i've been procrastinating on this one so bad. i spent three weeks in costa rica thinking about jurassic park. tbh i don't know what to say about the specials or the era overall that i haven't said already
nine feels so beautiful post-time war, traumatized and snappish but also light and warm and kind. he was once a father and grandfather and now he is neither but he is still a doctor!! s1 feels so much richer after having seen "day of the doctor" tbh i know how we got here! it was hard, agonizing, impossible choices. yet he's still here, and he chooses love every time. a coward. he would rather doom the entire universe as long as it kills him too; he cannot survive another genocide. he can't see it happen again. if he can't prevent it, he just wants to not see it. i love nine so much
and then ten. ten is more built from nine than ANY other regeneration i can think of. ten is rose, he's bad wolf, he's nine. he's the echo of donna, of tentoo. ten is someone struggling to find his place between "where he's already been, as remembered by rose" and "where he is destined to go, via donna" like he is so dragged along by fate. mf is a full on greek tragedy, he does NOT know what is going on
that's what makes the specials such a wreck (good/bad). when he was with rose, they were a painful but understandable match. with martha, kinda middle ground. with donna, it was fate. after them? after tentoo, after the most important woman in all creation? he's adrift. he clings to randos, he tries to be the hero so hard. and he fails. he trips and cries and sobs like a huge loser, over and over again. i do love him (and tennant is fully failed by 2/4 specials) but he's unraveling! little baby duck imprinted on their mommy who is gone. what's left, after that? martyr/savior complex and dubiously gay shit, i guess
tennant is a marvel, i have to say this. eccleston too, in different ways. davies has such a wonderfully human touch with these characters, iirc moffat draws a lot from fairy tales while davies pulled a lot from modern social commentary. jack is... something, but it was a different time. ten/master is sooooooo much. this era ended more than a decade ago
all in all, davies era is beautiful, it's decadent. it's complete nonsense bullshit a good chunk of time, but i don't think that's a negative; doctor who is like star wars to me, where i truly genuinely believe it's at its best when it's kind of bad. i mean, late 60s is MY era of who. base under siege nonsense galore. farting aliens. doctor who should be bad, in order to be good. i mean this, genuinely. attack of the clones is great. you get it
i feel more comfortable leaning into this ending knowing what comes later; knowing that davies comes back, knowing that ten becomes fourteen eventually and cleans up his shit, knowing that donna gets a better, more complete ending. it's honestly hard to say what i would think about this era without knowing about the 60th; i do think "journey's end" is a nonsense bullshit episode that is nonetheless very fun to watch, however cruel an ending it is for donna. very grateful we got a redux. moffat is writing for this new davies era too i'm so excited i want to throw up
anyway! excited to re-enter the moffat era but davies had so much sway over the new tone of the show, so much feels so dated but there's no denying the impact his episodes had at the time. there were cat people. it was thematically consistent. god i love it all so much. quel domage!

On OC best friends...
I realized that over the years I've created original character best friends for both Asami Sato and General Iroh. They don't appear often - OCs as big parts of fics aren't usually popular - but when they do they have consistent characterization and I fully believe that they exist in that world. And I was thinking about them today, as one does about OCs, and realized who I decided would be my blorbos' best friends says a lot about how I see their characterization.
Asami Sato's Best Friend: Tachi Hamada
Tachi Hamada, the son of the Fire Nation ambassador in the United Republic and reluctant Fire Nation spy, is the perfect friend for a character like Asami because like her he straddles multiple worlds. A third culture kid who mostly grew up in the Northern Water Tribe during his father's previous assignment, he belongs everywhere and nowhere and uses his fun-loving nature and fierce intelligence to milk Republic City's elite social scene of politically useful tidbits. Yet he himself cares little for politics and even less for the Fire Nation. Instead Tachi trades his tips and secrets for his father looking the other way when he refuses to marry and sleeps with men and pretends to have a career at the Embassy while mostly spending his fortune on lavish parties. In short, he's buying his own freedom.
The first thing that struck me about this is that Asami's best friend is a dude. But I tried writing her with female OCs and they all wound up shallow and catty. In Tachi Asami finds a fellow high-EQ nerd (they met in math club at school) who loves fashion and food and culture. Similar background. Same schools. They have complicated feelings about their fathers and always feel a touch out of place as only-children with trust funds who face hardships few can relate to while forging their own paths. Asami's upbringing is so different from the rest of the Krew. Also, Tachi is fun. Because Asami is fun, and I wanted her to have a fun friend who can make her laugh and take her out when she's down but who isn't a vapid waste of space.
General Iroh's Best Friend: Commander Hartok
Now for something completely different. Commander Hartok is the no-nonsense legal counsel of the United Forces. Water Tribe and a decade older than Iroh, he's had different positions over time, starting as Iroh's young Legal Ethics teacher at the United Forces Academy all the way up to succeeding as UF JAG. Blocky, burly, and good-humored, Hartok seems to spend most of his time telling Iroh "no, that's illegal" and "get your head out of your ass" and "your odds will improve if you at least talk to a woman" - occasionally in the same sentence - while playing Pai Sho or dragging him to social events Iroh would otherwise skip. He's bright, successful, ambitious, but is entirely self-motivated in these things, and can sometimes use that perspective to help Iroh sort through what he actually wants versus what he thinks the world expects from him.
To me, General Iroh always seems a bit lost. He's far from home, thrust into a position of significant power at a young age, and faced with threats none of his predecessors had to face. He has few peers. Commander Hartok - older, rational, kind, funny, a philosopher, happily married, and unfailingly honest - is both best friend and brother, someone he can come to with problems that would scare the shit out of others or at least violate security clearance. It also helps that he's within the United Forces, and while not in a combat position understands the life and compromises that come with that kind of service.
Anyway I should write these guys more.

sims tag!
tagged by @simmer-until-tender & @themeasureofasim (so long ago, whoops) thank you!
Favorite sims death?
I've only ever seen drowning, fire, and old age in my game (so boring, I know) but I think I have to go with Murphy Bed for sheer "unlikely but plausible" horror.
Alpha CC or Maxis Match?
Maxis Match with a little soupçon of semi-realism, particularly with hair. I just love that classic Pooklet shine.
Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?
No way -- the Townie Body Diversity Project is one of my favorite mods for a reason! We need more fat sims! If I could have one no-questions-asked Sims 2 wish granted, it would be more diverse bodytypes for all existing meshes (dream on, I know).
Do you use move objects?
Who doesn't? I basically only have it off to place diagonal doors and windows.
Favorite mod?
This is such a hard question because there are /hundreds/ of tiny QOL mods that add up into such incredible gameplay. But I'm going to go with either the Community Time Project or Skilling on Community Lots! The latter especially makes so many community lots... actually worth it. I don't think I could play without it. Why bother otherwise?
First expansion/game/stuff pack you got?
I think I actually got Nightlife before University and I loved it. Everyone was a vampire and had the most expensive car. Life was simple and good.
Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing?
Live as in "we're going live!" The other way feels so bizarre in my mouth.
Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made?
I will always have a soft spot for an alien sim named Laika from many, many neighborhoods ago. She was my icon for a long time!
Have you made a simself?
Only when I was younger! I like The Sims (and most media, tbh) to be as indulgent and escapist from my own life as possible. Like, what am I doing there?? I have the same reaction to self-insert fanfiction too. What is my purpose in this narrative? No thanks.
What sims traits do you give yourself?
For TS2: Lazy, Playful, Pleasure Aspiration.
For TS3: Vegetarian, Absent-Minded, Good Sense of Humor, Neurotic, Over-Emotional 🥲
Which is your favorite EA hair color?
I assume this is a question tailored to one of the other games, lol. As a kid I always loved shortslick in red because it was a slightly different shade than the other red hairstyles in the game, and it felt like the closest I could get to a new hair color without CC (which I didn't know how to download).
Favorite EA hair?
I really love the paperboycap hairstyle that came with Apartment Life! I wish there were pookleted defaults of it that just retextured the hair and kept the hat. Sometimes I use it anyway even though it doesn't match the rest of the hair in my game. It's cute!
Favorite life stage?
I actually really, really love the Child life state! There is so much that children can do (painting! gardening! cooking!) and it feels like after a toddler life state that doesn't have much variety between sims, you finally get to get a feel for what kind of person they're going to be. Plus, so many cute social interactions between other children and their parents. I'm always sad to see them grow into teens :(
Are you a builder or are you in it for the game play?
Both! I'm honestly not a very good builder and often get impatient because I just want to play and take pictures. But then if the world doesn't feel "real" or visually appealing enough, I get frustrated because the gameplay isn't as satisfying. I constantly have to force myself to stop and focus on building so I don't overshoot on the playing in a way that feels dissatisfying. Fun hobby.
Are you a CC creator?
No, but I have a lot of practice downloading things :)
Do you have any simblr friends/a sims squad?
I've never been in the Sims community consistently enough for that, but there are plenty of names that give me the happy little "ah, you! 🥰" thought bubble over my head for when I see them on my dashboard!
What’s your favorite game (1,2,3,4)?
Must you even ask?
Do you have any sims merch?
I have a pair of plumbob earrings! They're understated enough that I feel like I can get away with wearing them to work. Someone actually correctly ID'd them once, too!
Do you have a youtube for sims?
No, editing pictures and posting here is enough of a timesink on its own. But I love watching speedbuilds!
How has your “sims style” changed throughout your years of playing?
Wow, so much. If this is about visuals, I didn't really have a cohesive style until I stumbled upon GOS in 2007 or so. The grungy look and my emo phase were like a wine & cheese pairing for the ages. When I got back into the Sims again in college in 2012, I'd shifted to a brighter style bordering on cartoonish (hello snapdragoned psd!). I think now I'm a sitting somewhere a little more muted, but hopefully still fun to look at 😬
If this question is geared more towards play style, I'm playing in rounds for the first time in... ever. I used to just wander into households and play until I got bored, or focus only on one family. What a difference it makes! I don't think I've ever been so hooked/consistently eager to play.
What’s your origin ID?
You people still use Origin?
Who’s your favorite cc creator?
Don't make me pick! There are a mind-boggling number of active creators out there still making beautiful, functional content. I adore and appreciate all of them! The game still feels so new and fresh. It was such a treat to come back to after a long hiatus.
How long have you had a simblr?
...eleven years 🥲 My GOD, do you ever feel old?!
How do you edit your pictures?
I should have read ahead before I mentioned the PSD, lol. I use Greenshot to take screenshots, then manually resize them in an old, super legal copy of Photoshop. Then I run a batch Photoshop action (sharpening, brightening, making colors more vivid) on them. Done and dusted.
What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next?
I guess I'll use this section for my dream mod. I would love more crafting benches/craftable items and more hobby options for the Freetime hobbies! Or a new Supernatural life state.

OC Tag Game
tagged by @raven-of-domain-kwaad - thank you, Raven! 💚💜
tagging @teetertottertales and whoever else wants to do this! (bc most of who I'd have tagged are tagged already haha)
I'll be sticking to SWTOR characters for this, just for consistency
Tumblr media
Favorite OC: Rediaex'aere'zortiea
This was a difficult one, but I think I've got to go with Xaerez. I've really enjoyed developing him over the last few years, and I always enjoy writing fics for him, answering asks, or just doing Certified Oliver Ramblings about him. The way duty contradicts morals for them (A Lot) makes them a lot of fun; I always enjoy thinking "ok, this is what he Wants to do, but this is what he's Going to do" when it comes to the various situations I shove them into whether they Want those situations or not.
Tumblr media
Newest OC: Fower Vek
I believe it's Fower ("Flower"), from the Rediscovery Era crew! Like Farsc, she's a professor - they worked together at a university on Coruscant, so that's how Farsc ended up going to her to get her on the crew and in on a little grand theft auto to steal the Star Hopper from a museum oops. She's an astronomer and cartographer, so makes sure the crew doesn't get lost while they search for where the Alliance disappeared to all those thousands of years ago. I like to think she's an ancestor to Lina and Varrich.
Tumblr media
Oldest OC: Synnda V'ehsz
I have many OCs much older than Synnda, but in keeping it to SWTOR, he was my very first. ...Probably not surprising, considering my legacy name haha - although he was named after my legacy, instead of the other way around. I did (and still kinda do) self-project a lot onto him, but I've developed him a lot over the years and he's very dear to me. I've got a Synnda clone on just about every server if that says anything - including 2 versions of him on Star Forge alone.
Tumblr media
Meanest OC: Ehna'dissen
Ehna, hands down. (Commander!Varrich comes in close, however) She's an interrogator, and enjoys holding power over others. It's because of her that Xaerez's Castellan restraints get re-triggered. Because of her Synnda eventually loses his life. Because of her that the Cadera siblings nearly tear each other apart as she watched on. She's absolutely horrible, she knows she's horrible, and she thinks it's all just a fun game that she's winning.
Tumblr media
Softest OC: Parrakh Djal
He just wants to be a healer, help others when he can. His life had an unfortunate start, but he finds his place as one of Synnda's students.
Tumblr media
Most Aloof/Standoffish OC: Anaehr Cadera
The youngest of Terrin and Torian's kids, Anaehr was already distant from his older siblings who were less than a year apart. He distances himself from his family as he grows jealous and angry of his siblings' success, makes terrible mistakes for it, but stands his ground and refuses to feel guilt for the actions that make him Dar'manda. He doesn't let anyone get close to him; his anger becomes numbness, and he becomes a cold and hateful man.
Tumblr media
Dumbest (Affectionate) OC: Jen Sept
My Voidhound. Need I say more? ajksl;djaskld Jen is. A lot. He can walk into a trap, know he's walking into a trap, and continue to walk in with zero plan anyway. It's....a good thing he has Risha and Kitty to steer him in the right direction, or this cat man probably would have gotten himself killed a long time ago.
Tumblr media
Smartest OC: Kitty
While Synnda and Qizulth are both extremely intelligent, their knowledge is a lot more limited to their interests. Kitty? He learned to survive during over a decade on the run after sneaking out of the academy on Korriban. Medicine, cultures, languages, mechanics, history--chances are if you ask him something, he can at the very least point you in the direction of getting the right answer even if he doesn't know it himself. Good thing, too: Marrying the Voidhound means someone needs to have the braincell or they're doomed.
Tumblr media
Horniest OC: Jen Sept
Jen again! He kinda just. Slept his way through the galaxy until he met Kitty. And now that they're together, Jen likes to experiment in bed, and sometimes they'll bring in a third for the night, too. With Jen having so much power in the underworld, it works Mighty Well for getting other bosses to cooperate with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OC You'd Bang: Aaz'n Tarnak or Lina Tophrik
I like strong women OKAY don't look at me
Tumblr media
OC You'd be Friends With IRL: Kidak Hess
He's just a very gentle person, and the thing about him is he Knows How To Be Friends With Introverts Without Being Overwhelming. He's totally chill to just be in someone's company without needing to be Doing Things. He's happy to talk about his own interests for hours, but at the same time he'd be happy to listen to someone else ramble about theirs while he he just soaked up everything they said. He'd just be really nice company, and the exact type of person I'd love to hang out with.

20 questions for fic writers
technically my sideblog @youthereader was tagged by @indulgence-be-thy-name - thanks bb ❤️; and like Em I'll be answering for both accounts
Tumblr media
How many works do you have on ao3? youthereader - 4 grimeysociety - 171
What's your total ao3 wordcount? youthereader - 17,245 grimeysociety - 2,299,669
What fandoms do you write for? MCU - almost exclusively Darcyland, a teeny bit of Stranger Things and RPF (Cillian Murphy characters mostly...I've barely begun though)
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? I can only answer this from grimey so... The Comeback Kid Among Wolves Damn, I'm In It I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm Heart to Break
Do you respond to comments? Why/why not? I always reply to comments unless they're the rare dickish one (I delete those, that's always fun). I reply to everything to thank people for interacting in the first place. I like it when I get a reply from authors, too. I'm very grateful.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I think it was one with Shieldshock and hacking, post-Infinity War, so everyone was dusted except for Steve and Darcy. It was kind of Schrödinger's ending because it might have been happy? I left it open (and I won't ever tell the 'real' ending).
What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of mine do. I can't help it. Especially since the 'happy ending' tends to be because of sex. I mean...
Do you get hate on fics? A couple times but it was really insignificant and swiftly deleted.
Do you write smut? If so, what kinds? I write it all. Kinktober was kind of my 'thing' for a few years, as in, some followers looked forward to it each October. I rarely don't have some form of smut in a fic. The filth is fun, and so is the intimate erotica type of stuff. The fluff is great, but I have actually written one that had no response whatsoever and I think it went a little too far for my regular readers.
Do you write crossovers? I think some of my Darcy fic count so I'm going to say yes. I've written her with most Chris Evans characters, like Ransom Drysdale to name one. It counts, right?
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yes and it's still up lol
Have you ever had a fic translated? I've had a couple translated into Russian but can't recall which, it's been a few years.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? I had someone ask me to ghostwrite their fic ending and then when they weren't happy with what I'd written they said 'no thanks' and haven't spoken to me since, does that count?
What’s your all time favorite ship? I will never be able to decide this, sorry. It's been years and I can never pinpoint it. Literally hundreds of thousands of words written over the three particular ships I'm thinking of and there's no way. There's just no way.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? The Americans. It's been nearly 2 years since I updated and I think it's been forgotten about anyway, so that's me off the hook.
What are your writing strengths? I can't answer that. I have no idea.
What are your writing weaknesses? My pacing is the worst. I repeat myself. I don't think I'm consistent in any way. I get impatient and hardly edit sometimes, which bites me in the ass later. I am bad at a lot of things.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I've done it and it's fine. It's my average high school level French, but it's passable. Literally I passed high school French.
First fandom you wrote for? Kingdom Hearts
Favorite fic you’ve written? The Comeback Kid because it seems to be everyone else's favourite, too.
Tumblr media
I will tag @sarahbeniel & @aimmyarrowshigh
