I am right there with u about the wanting to write dark stuff bestie I feel u
Yeeaahh, like thematically dark and serious fanfiction can be a lot of fun to write and read, if you're into that! I know a lot of people prefer fluff, and that's completely reasonable. There's something cathartic about dark stuff to me. Especially if the canon material is rather dark already, I find it like a sort of refreshing change from a lot of fluff, let's say.
I will always encourage people to write whatever they wish, so long as the dark story in question isn't, y'know, deliberately offensive, exploitative, or racist/phobic in any way. Beta and sensitivity readers also help with catching stuff like this, and therefore are always wonderful to have. I think there are people in every fandom who write dark stuff for the sake of being upsetting or shocking, so to be clear that's not what I mean (nor is it what I think you mean, nonnie) when I say I like to write dark stuff 😅 I just enjoy the violence, fear, grief, anger, etc. It shows up in a lot of my writing and it really helps me get through some stuff.
But yeah, I always say write what you want! Even if only five people read it. (This advice does not apply to me because I have self-esteem issues with my writing lol). I have read some of the most gorgeous fics in the tog fandom that are pretty dark. Not necessarily angsty all the way through, just dealing with serious themes in a way that's very true to canon. This is just me telling a general audience that it's possible to write dark stuff without being offensive and upsetting and exploitative. Give me more canon-typical violence and horror and anger! And of course it's always important to be kind and tag your works correctly!

Hot take? Unpopular take?? Imma try to get somewhere with this point but like. I really think reading fanfiction inherently increased my standards for literature.
Cause for a while now I've only solely read fics in the past few years, like probably finished like two published books a year maybe (even though if I count my fic reads I'd easily be in the 100s from word count alone) and like. Recently got into the YA side of booktok, tried reading several of the most popular ones cause i kinda miss published books, and I just. side eye that shit?? Best example is ACOTAR. Read like 4 books in that series. Kinda get why it's popular cause the overall the main plot points (hot romance and kinda Mary sue protag) are good enough to get you into it but like. I genuinely had to force myself to finish it?? I have no idea why this is so popular.
Cause literally when I hold the ACOTAR up to my top 20 fics. Nothing. Not even my top 50 fics. Cause first off the plot is good enough but it's not something I've never seen before either. Same with characters. The writing style?? Straight up nope. Like. Is this really the standards for a good story?? There's so many good authors that write excellent smut and plot and characterization and just FANTASTIC writing style and overall quality of work and just. I don't get it.
I'm assuming this is a me thing, because I tried going through several YA novels and just. The quality of writing reeeally leaves a lot to be desired. The best thing I can come up with for the reason behind me feeling like this about YA is that the last time I was reading insanely, I was a teen, and now I'm in my early 20s so there's a good possibility that the same things don't intrest me anymore. But I keep circling back to the level of writing cause like. Idk. Just. I feel like while the plot and characters for a lot of these novels are good, what falls short is how it's written??? Like wtf.

do YOU have any fic recs? I’m new to this fandom and idk how to find fics
I know it sounds weird but I only read bottom Ro 😭 so if you have any fics where he is a bottom (with anyone, any sight) I’d love that!
why thank you for asking anon yes i do >:D
i also have an obsession with bottom ro so i totally got you. here's a few (all are mature/explicit):
under a spell, you're hypnotized by chipskylark - ambreigns, one of my absolute favorites from one of my besties
more i get through the gears by chipskylark - ambreigns
splash by cookiethewriter - ambreigns, omegaverse
Lace by n/a - ambreigns, roman in lingerie
(Leave Me) Breathless by countmeaway - ambreigns
Don't Overthink Things Baby by jollytimes - roman/seth/dean, bdsm
Mortal Kings Are Ruling Castles by n/a - roman/finn, a little supernatural since it's the balor demon and werewolf!roman
there is also Keep Me In Close Orbit by valmontheights (which i'm currently rereading for the millionth time) and please mind the tags but it's roman/triple h and one of the best bottom ro fics ever
lastly i have to recommend just ambreignstrain altogether. not exclusively bottom roman but i love ALL of their fics so i have to include them <3

Neon a question: what genres of music/artists do you think Joe would vibe with?
i think joe is just generally a Music Fan. he has the most eclectic music taste you've ever heard. he'll play classical and edm and hiphop and folk and heavy metal all in a row and give you genre whiplash but enjoy it all equally. in all seriousness tho i think he just loves that music is so accessible now (he wouldn't have been able to listen to this much for so long!! nicky bought him a walkman when they first became a thing and joe carried it with him pretty much everywhere for about a month until it was damaged during a mission). in their safehouses they have various different selections of cds/cassettes/vinyls depending on what kind of player they have. if not joe has a couple ipods dotted around. he just likes music a lot
that being said i think joe likes blends of folk/traditional music or instruments with modern technology + styles especially, because he likes hearing how music grows and develops and how the instruments and styles he's heard for centuries are built on and adapted. (personal favourite examples are release by afro celt sound system which is a neat blend of electronic/celtic/african music and it slaps, literally any mashrou' leila song but especially taxi, shum by go_a and stefania by kalush orchestra. additionally kai tangata by alien weaponry for the maori metal which barely qualifies as an example but its cool and i'm on a roll.) hes also a big queen fan
i cant come up with an actual list because it will be heavily skewed towards me specifically (as a general Music Enjoyer). but yeah joe and music is important to me. i also think he's a big fan of any kind of love songs even the sappiest most terrible one you've heard in your life. he thinks theyre neat

📓: College!AU
OKAY FUCK THIS IS ACTUALLY REALLY HARD BECAUSE I HAVE A FEW COLLEGE AUS THAT I LOVE
I’m gonna cheat slightly and rec a series (3 parts, ~12k words total) instead of one fic and say The Spicy Six GC by beetlesandstars & witchjeons!
Look. It’s texting fic which I know is not everyone’s cup of tea, but personally I’m quite fond of them (and also I’m a little bit feral about any fic that’s written in an epistolary-esque format, tbh). This series is SO FUCKING FUNNY and I can visualise these interactions playing out So Clearly. Plus the vibes are just So Correct to my own experiences in uni that I can’t help but love it.
Ask me for a fic rec!

Friday recs!
It's second friday! IDK what you named the days of the week, here we call it second friday. Here we go, hold onto your socks times are wild.
TV show: [i just typed all this out and then tumblr ate it]. The Confessions of Frannie Langton, you can watch it in the UK on ITVX, click here. An adaptation of the book (same title) by Sara Collins (click here to find on The Storygraph), it's a four episode miniseries about Frannie Langton, her trial and as per the title, her confession. People said it's a love story, which I guess it is. The relationships between the characters are compelling, the cruelty is all mixed up with, maybe love isn't correct but something.
Book: Not really a book, but I was down a rabbit hole and came across The Sins of the Cities of the Plains, which is gay erotica from 1881. I haven't actually read it all, it's pretty much lots and lots of sex. It is super interesting to read the later parts about Sodomy and Tribadism, I know a bit about these definitions from other research but I like reading about the definitions in this sort of text, where it's written about sex. Most of my contemporary sources when I was researching this were sensational, medical, tracts against the acts, or court documents. Anyway, you can read it on Wikisource.
Please note, it is explicit, not safe for work, about sex, men have lots and lots (and lots and lots) of sex. Now you know, you can click here.
Radio: I've been listening to Jeeves and Wooster radio plays with Michael Hordern (Jeeves) and Richard Briers (Bertie Wooster). I like Mr Hordern being Jeeves very much, he's very funny, and I really like the interplay between their Jeeves and Wooster.
Fanfic: whose history, waiting by dotsayers, click here. It's, uh, Hot Fuzz, Rivers of London, and The Ritual, I don't know all these, I read a Hot Fuzz fanfic once, I have no idea how I ended up there but it was super cool! It is third in a series, I didn't read the others. It's a great vibe, mundanity and Sublime, a creeping edge of horror. Lovely!
Music: I been listening to Fire in the Wild album by Wild on Bandcamp recurrently (click here), super dreamy and nice.
That's it! Second Friday! have a good weekend!
If anyone has recs, I'd like to hear, tell me about cool things. Especially this week if anyone has recs for queer kids books for gifting. Not like, Tango Makes Three, just take it as read I know the basics and so do the small people in my life.
