Read something along the lines of Rome killing his twin brother and another headcanon that was very Romano centric - my mind immediately incorporated it as a headcanon that Rome found Romano first (which is why he's the 'big brother' in the first place), and it already was a struggle for Nations to accept the inevitability of their deaths but he loved Romano immensely and even gave him that name as a token of his affections and expectations.

But then Feli popped up and Rome had a momentary lapse of crazy that he immediately went 'I can't let my baby Romano die so I'll kill the other one immediately' but fortunately that did not actually happen but instead, he was in a bit of a tough spot because Romano would not hesitate to point out if Feli 'mysteriously dissapeared', so instead Rome was absolutely on guard with Feli and ended up paying overt attention to him to see if he's growing any 'killing brother' vibes because he doesn't actually want them to kill each other, been there done that it doesn't feel good and will haunt you till eternity. He'd rather Romano hate Rome than hate himself.

Rome does grow to love both of his grandsons, it's just that knee jerk reaction definitely throws him for a frenzy sometimes, and to make matters worse, Romano is getting distant with him while he has to keep checking on Feli with the same feeling of 'I left my stove on' so that's another thing to worry about.

Rome died really worried (if he wasn't he wouldn't try so hard to return to check up on them).

(That risk never actually existed in the first place other than in Rome's mind and if the two finds the journal Rome kept all those thoughts in, they'd be very aghast and upset).

It was odd, but you understood. Hey, at least it was a new gateway to doing… Other things…

South Italy/Lovino Vargas: Lovino would sputter indignantly, pulling away with a quick tug before asking you what exactly the hell you were thinking when you did that, assuming you had no idea what the hair curl did. Cursing and swearing, he would be bright red beyond possible reason and when you asked what was up, he would adamantly refuse to tell you.
