Claudio Gentile da 17 anni si chiede perché lo abbiano fatto fuori dalla Nazionale: dalla Under 21, che allenava, e dalla Nazionale A che gli avevano promesso. Se lo ripete ogni giorno, si può dire ogni momento. E non ha risposta.

Perché è successo, secondo lei?

"Avevamo vinto l’Europeo, avevamo conquistato il bronzo alle Olimpiadi, una medaglia che mancava al nostro calcio da 70 anni. Sette miei giocatori formavano l’ossatura dell’Italia campione del mondo nel 2006, ma io venni cacciato dalla sera alla mattina senza una spiegazione. Ma non senza un motivo".

Dunque, un sospetto lei ce l’ha.

"Avevo minacciato di denunciare alcuni procuratori che volevano offrirmi denaro, molto denaro, per convocare in Nazionale i loro giocatori. Li cacciai tutti! Io stesso non ho mai avuto un agente. Guarda caso, da quel momento qualcuno me l’ha giurata".

Ha in mente un nome e un cognome?

"La risposta avrebbe dovuto darla Guido Rossi, che era commissario straordinario della Figc e decise di farmi fuori: ma purtroppo è morto. Potrebbe chiarire qualcosa Demetrio Albertini, al quale spiegai che avevo ricevuto l’offerta di un club importante (la Juventus, ndr) e che mi invitò a rifiutare. “Abbiamo progetti importanti per te”, mi disse Albertini. Come no! Il progetto di distruggermi la carriera. Da chi prendevano ordini quei dirigenti? Sono stato ingenuo a non firmare un altro contratto e a non abbandonare la Figc. L’ho fatto per troppa correttezza".

Lei come reagì?

"A Guido Rossi ne dissi di tutti i colori, e sono parole che non posso certo riferire. Ma era il minimo. Eppure, lo giuro, io non ho mai avuto neanche un nemico".

Da quel momento, Gentile non ha più allenato in Italia.

"Ricevo ancora messaggi di persone che mi chiedono perché. La gente a volte mi ferma per strada e mi dice: “Ci sono asini che allenano e lei no, come mai?” Non so cosa rispondere. Eppure, questi asini li vedo andare e venire, cadere e ritornare in ballo: questione di scuderie. Ma io ho sempre fatto da solo, e da allenatore ho permesso a tanti ragazzi di crescere e diventare uomini. Soltanto con uno di loro non è stato possibile, eppure passava per un genio del calcio".

Di chi stiamo parlando?

"Lasciamo perdere che è meglio".

Non le è bastata una medaglia olimpica?

"Quando a casa passo davanti a quel cerchietto di bronzo, mi girano soltanto le scatole. Ci sto ancora male da morire, forse più di prima. Sono vittima di una cattiveria gigantesca. Cosa ho fatto di male nella vita? Voi che siete giornalisti, aiutatemi a trovare una risposta. Forse ho vinto troppo? A chi ho dato fastidio?".

I procuratori erano una lobby così potente?

"La parola che mi viene in mente è mafia, senza neppure un Totò Riina al quale dare la colpa: io non so chi mi abbia fatto saltare in aria. Rubavo? Ero corrotto? Ero antipatico? Me lo dicano. Almeno, dopo quasi vent’anni saprò finalmente qualcosa in più. Ma poi si preparino alle denunce dei miei avvocati".

"Tutto passato, ed è un passato che non torna. Adesso ho solo un enorme nodo allo stomaco. Alcuni miei compagni e amici di allora hanno avuto altre occasioni, penso a Zoff, Tardelli, Oriali, Cabrini, Antognoni, Bruno Conti, Bettega, Graziani. Perché Gentile no? Ma io avevo vinto più di tutti sulla panchina azzurra. Sarei rimasto volentieri all’Under 21, non ci stavo male, anche se ormai la Nazionale A mi faceva gola. E invece mi hanno tolto di mezzo senza un perché".

Review of Bound by Honor by Cora Reilly.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Premise: This book follows Aria Scuderi the mafia princess/oldest daughter of the Chicago Outfit and Luca Vitiello the mafia prince/oldest son and future Capo of the New York Famiglia. Aria is known for her beautiful looks and is thrown into an arranged marriage with Luca in order to strengthen the bonds between Chicago and New York to protect themselves against the Bratva and the Taiwanese. Aria is terrified of Luca because he is known for being a cold monster who choked his cousin to death with his two hands. However, Aria realizes that the cold exterior doesn’t exactly have roots inside his heart.

My Thoughts: This book was the first book I’ve read by Cora Reilly and it will definitely not be my last! This book was addicting from start to finish and I finished it one day. It had a good amount of action and wasn’t super intimidating or gory. I loved that Aria never gave up on Luca and had the courage to make their marriage work. I also loved how Luca didn’t force anything against Aria and was considerate of her thoughts and feelings. I appreciated that Aria wasn’t a very whiny character and she was a headstrong heroine. I’ve added Luca to my list of book boyfriends already. He is such a charming character once you get to know him, and the way he acts toward Aria melts my heart. His character development is amazing!!! I can already tell that Luca and Aria will be my favorite couple in the Born in Blood Mafia series. 💞

Cons: -Not much plot (really didn’t mind it though and actually kinda loved it) -Aria’s siblings were kinda annoying honestly but it didn’t really deter my love for this book.

Final Thoughts: I loved it and would recommend it to anyone. This is a great first book to read if you’re jumping into the mafia/mob romance category. The steamy scenes were also very... *blushes*

Cora Reilly’s Born In Blood series, its Camorra Chronicles sequel, and the next generation sequel series Sins of the Father are so damn good. The romances between most of the couples are wonderful and most of the sibling relationships are awesome too.

Born In Blood Mafia Chronicles

- #1 Bound by Honor - first two months of Luca Vitiello’s and Aria Scuderi’s arranged marriage. Luca is the heir to and eventual leader of the mafia in New York.

- #0 Luca Vitiello - Luca’s POV of Bound by Honor, written a couple of years after the start of the series.

- #2 Bound by Duty - first year of Dante Cavallaro’s marriage to his second wife Valentina Aresco. Dante is the head of the mafia in Chicago. He’s 35 when he marries 23 year old Val.

- #3 Bound by Hatred - Gianna Scuderi, Aria’s sister, runs away before her arranged marriage to Matteo Vitiello, Luca’s brother, despite the fact that they like each other and made out at Aria’s and Luca’s wedding. He chases after her for months, catches her, and they marry.

- #4 Bound by Temptation - Lily, Aria’s youngest sister, and Aria’s bodyguard Romero Cancio fall in love and have to overcome the marriage her father arranged for her to a man his age.

Camorra Chronicles

- #1 Twisted Loyalties - Fabiano Scuderi (younger brother of Aria, Gianna, and Lily, and who is now the enforcer for the mafia in Las Vegas) meets and falls in love with Leona, a nice but destitute girl who knows nothing about the mob.

- #2 Twisted Emotions - Nino Falcone (second in command to his brother Remo) considers himself a sociopath and does not feel. He’s cold and clinical and speaks and thinks like a robot. Until his arranged marriage to Luca’s cousin Kiara Vitiello. Kiara is severely traumatized from being raped by an uncle at age 13 and being emotionally neglected by her family before and after. Nino is super gentle and kind to her, and they fall in love with each other, with Nino eventually admitting that he’s *feeling emotions* for the first time since his childhood.

- #3 Twisted Pride - Remo Falcone (head of the Las Vegas mafia and aged 24 at the time) kidnaps Serafina (aged 19 and niece of Dante, the head of the Chicago mafia) on her way to her wedding for an arranged marriage. He keeps her captive for two months, psychologically torturing Dante and his family with phone calls, photos, and letters that make them believe Serafina is being raped and tortured. In reality, Remo thinks rape is too easy and likes a challenge, so he sets out to seduce Serafina into willingly having sex with him.

- #4 Twisted Bonds - Kiara wants kids but she and Nino have trouble conceiving. It covers everything after Twisted Emotions, during Twisted Pride, and a couple of years afterwards from their POVs.

-#5 Twisted Hearts - Savio Falcone’s life is devoted to fighting and fucking. Gemma, his best friend’s younger sister, has been infatuated with him since the day they met when she was 10 and he was 14. She’s had a very religious conservative upbringing and she’s not only saving sex for marriage, she expects her first kiss to happen on her wedding day after saying ‘I do’ while Savio is in his own words a “man whore” who has sex with any girl who’ll have him.

-#6 Twisted Cravings - Adamo is the youngest of the four Falcone brothers. He’s not as “dark” as his brothers and wants to be a nice guy. He’s wanted love and monogamy since was a kid. He loves car racing and devotes himself to illegal street racing, avoiding mafia activities he finds distasteful. Dinara, daughter of the head of the Russian mafia in Chicago, saunters into his world as a fellow street racer and Adamo quickly falls in love.
