Ironically, the most eventful day in the careers of Mr. and Mrs. Fenton had nothing to do with ghosts. The two had just returned from the supermarket and were carrying in the groceries, when the shadow in the corner began to speak.

"We need to talk."

"GHOST!"

The couple were on their back before they could draw their weapons.

"You are the foremost experts in the field of ecto-biology," said Batman as if he hadn't just brought down a three hundred pound man and a ninth-degree black-belt before either of them could realize he'd moved, "I have questions regarding your sponsor."

"Sweetie, is the Batman in our living room?" asked Jack.

"I do believe he is," replied Maddie as she stood up and patted the dust off her clothes, "you know, you could have called for an appointment. We'd have made time."

"In the 80's, the two of you had your doctorate studies rescinded due to your studies in what you called "ecto-science"," he stated, ignoring their indignation, "yet you now live in an upper-middle class neighborhood and spend thousands of dollars a year on technology that didn't have a proper proof-of-concept until recently."

"What's your point?" asked Jack.

"Where is the money coming from?"

"If you must know, we have a sponsor," replied Maddie, "after our dean proved to be too small-minded for our research, we were approached by a man who was more open to the possibility of inter-dimensional research."

"He wanted us to study ghosts!" cut in Jack, "He even gave us our very first sample of ectoplasm!"

"That one sample was the backbone of our research for years, until we got our portal running."

"You never asked where he got that sample from?"

"He seemed like a trust-worthy fellow," dismissed Maddie, "all he asks is for copies of our experiments and for ectoplasm from our portal."

"What sort of experiments?"

"Well, at first we needed to verify the psycho-active behavior of the sample," recalled Maddie, "if you give me a second, I have my research around here somewhere."

"You took the sample to several morgues," Batman told them, "the sample's most drastic and extreme behavior occurred when it was placed close to bodies who had a history of violent and anti-social behavior in life."

"Maddie, the League's reading our papers!" Jack giggled excitedly, "But yes, it's how we know that all ghosts are evil ectoplasmic scum!"

"You never questioned the origin of the sample?"

"It was the only sample we had," pointed out Maddie, "but it's properties matched all of our theories."

"The man you spoke with was Ra's al Ghul," he informed them, dropping a folder full of pictures and documents for them to peruse, "thousands of years ago, Ra's found a well of green water that is now known as a Lazarus Pit. Using its power, he has rejuvenated himself time and again to maintain his position as the head of the League of Assassins. After some experimentation, he found the same pits could keep his forces alive, even in death.

"Over time, the League came across a problem that threatened their continued existence. They were consuming the Pit's water faster than it was replenishing itself. After much experimentation, they found a solution. At the moment of death, when the human soul passes over to the Infinite Realms, what you call the Ghost Zone, a small amount of ectoplasm leaks over to our side."

"Wait, you don't mean...?" Maddie trailed off, horror settling in.

"Ra's killed people en masse to replenish his pool," affirmed Batman, "further experimentation revealed that people who died in a state of extreme fear or pain provided more ferocious soldiers. That is where your sample came from.

"In it's neutral state, ectoplasm reacts equally to all emotional ranges. Repeated exposure to emotional extremes will imprint the ectoplasm, causing it to react more strongly to a specific emotional range than to others. The negative emotions of Ra's victims imprinted on the ectoplasm, resulting in your skewed results."

"Wait, how would you know that?" demanded Maddie, "We're the foremost experts on ecto-science and we didn't know that!"

He pulled out a thick folder and slammed it onto the table.

"I had my research peer-reviewed."

"By who?" asked Jack, "We looked all over and couldn't find anyone in the scientific community!"

"You weren't looking in the right place. There is a branch of the Justice League that specializes in the supernatural, ghosts and demons chief among them. They want me to bring you in."

"Really!? Did you hear that Mads! We're being recruited by the Justice League!"

"They want me to arrest you," Batman corrected them, "for illegal poaching of innocent and neutral spirits, particularly after last week's attack on their newest member, Danny Phantom."

"The Ghost Boy!?" roared Jack, "That no-good ectoscum made the League before we did!?"

"I have watched his fights. He takes care to avoid collateral damage and only appears when other ghosts attack, sometimes at great personal cost."

"Look, Mr. Batman," sighed Maddie in a condescending tone, "we've fought the ghost boy for years. He has a history of crime and violence. If you look far enough, you'll find-."

Batman had no time for nonsense.

"The League has already looked into the incidents. All show indications of either coercion or mind control."

"Ghosts are deceitful and conniving-!"

"We have already established that your initial sample skewed your results," he cut Jack off, "this would imply that all of your research and experiments need to be reassessed, including your opinions towards ghosts in general.

"Regarding Ra's al Ghul, you will need to continue working with him. Cutting contact suddenly may put you and your family in danger."

That caught their attention.

"What do we need to do?" asked Jack, all jokes and outrage immediately tossed out the window.

"Keep doing your research with this new information in mind. Your experiments have been applied to the Lazarus Pits, resulting in unstable results. Recent subjects have come out in a mindless rage, while others have shown no effect on their mind, and yet others have had no effect. Ra's is already skeptical of your continued collaboration. If you provide him with research based off this new information, he may decide you are not worth his time or money. When it comes to Ra's, your best option is dismissal to irrelevance. You do not want to make an enemy out of him."

"It's not just that," admitted Maddie, "if we were the only ones being affected, we'd simply let him know we're exploring new horizons outside of ecto-science. The thing is, we have two children, one in college and one near graduation."

He gave them a card. "Call that number. All of their college expenses will be taken care of."

"I... Bruce Wayne?" read out Jack.

"We've collaborated before, he is trustworthy," he reassured them, "the next part is up to you. Will you be scientists, or poachers?"

Their lights flickered, and he was gone.

What Shame Leads To

So, it's August 5th in Australia at least, so I'm going to go ahead and post this now. This is for Day 5 of Angstfest: Everyone Knows AU - Shame .

@lexosaurus, thanks for letting me use your biology concepts! Also, this is your fault.

Trigger Warnings: Major Character Death, Dissection, Explosions, Surgery, Mass Casualties

Danny took a deep breath as he watched his mother prep the lab table for surgery. He held it for ten seconds, then let it out. Jazz said that deep breathing was supposed to help with anxiety, but his stomach was still tying itself in knots.

“Hey, Danno,” his Dad said from where he was kneeling next to him with an IV drip that was already ready to go. “Do you need to go over the plan again?”

Danny nodded, giving his dad a shaky smile. He was glad he told his parents about the accident. Really, he was. The fight with the lunch lady had freaked him out. There was no way he was going to be able to face that kind of thing alone again. He needed backup and his parents were ghost hunters… even if they hadn’t done anything the first time around.

His Dad nodded back, confident as ever. It was the kind of reassurance Danny needed right now.

”Right,“ Jack said, ”We’re having a hard time identifying the structures in your abdomen from out here, so we're going to go in and take a look.“

Danny took another deep breath. When he said it like that, it didn't sound so bad. It was just taking a look around and figuring out what was wrong.

”Now, we're pretty sure all that ecto-radiation that's messing with the X-rays is coming from the blob right under your rib cage, so we're going to start there.“

Danny took another deep breath. He didn't like being reminded that there were unidentified things in his body now. Things that his parents couldn't identify. At least one thing that was spewing some kind of radiation.

”If we can verify that it's safe, your mom and I are going to remove the structure and put it in containment. Then we'll close you up.“

”And if it's not?“ Danny asked. He knew the answer. They'd been over it already. He wanted to hear it again anyway. He needed to hear his dad tell him everything would be alright.

”If it's not safe to remove,“ Jack said patiently, kindly, “We'll make as many observations as we can, sew you back up, and then figure out a way to remove it safely.” Jack laughed boisterously. “Either way, you'll be awake and eating ice cream before you know it.”

That was both a promise and an unfortunate reality. No matter what happened, Danny would be on a soft foods diet for at least a week and he wouldn't be able to go back to school until, well, that depended on if his parents were able to cure him or not.

He hadn't known for that first month, but there was a source of ecto-contamination emanating from inside him. It didn't just make him drop beakers and allow him to fly. It was potentially contaminating everyone around him and they didn’t know what continued exposure to ecto-radiation did to living people.

Of course, they had to tell the school. It wouldn't be right to just not tell people they were being irradiated. Everyone in Danny's class had to be checked over by a doctor and then by both Fentons because there was no one alive that had both a medical degree and enough expertise in the ecto-sciences to actually tell if someone was seriously contaminated. Thankfully, nobody was, but the fuss it stirred up was ungodly.

A lot of people wanted him kicked out of school and his parents charged with child endangerment. He didn't think Sam's parents would ever let her see him again. Tucker's were still allowing electronic communication, but nothing else. He wasn't going to be allowed back to school until they could prove he was decontaminated. Everyone knew and it was terrible.

He should have told his parents as soon as it happened. They could have kept it under wraps then.

”Dad,“ Danny said quietly, ”I'm sorry I didn't-”

“Hey,” his Dad said, softening from his earlier cheer, “I know we were mad that you didn't tell us. And, I'm not going to lie, your mother and I are still a little upset that you didn't trust us enough to tell us right away, but the important thing is that you did tell us. We can fix this now.” Danny smiled at his Dad. Of course, this would all be- “We just have to get that spook out of you.”

Danny's heart dropped to his feet and all the anxiety he'd been gradually releasing came back full force. That was the other thing he was trying not to think about: Phantom.

Danny had mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, he knew his parents were right. They were the experts. Being Phantom wasn't good for anyone, no matter how cool it was. On the other, being Phantom was the only reason he was able to get the lunch lady back into the ghost zone. He wasn't sure his parents could have done it even if they had known about the threat. And deep in his chest he felt a sense of dread so profound it made him want to run far, far away and never look back.

He didn’t like the way that his dad called Phantom a spook, either. Phantom was Danny. Danny was Phantom. The fact that it was easier to talk about Phantom as a separate entity didn’t make it true.

He looked at his dad. “What if this is a mistake?” Danny asked wearily, “What if taking whatever this is out hurts me.”

Jack's brow furrowed and Danny swallowed. “Danny...” he said, more softly than Danny had heard him get in a long, long time.

He jumped a foot in the air when he felt a hand on his shoulder. “Sorry sweetie, didn't mean to startle you there,” he mom said as she gave him a reassuring squeeze. He gave her a shaky smile in return.

“But, you're father's right,” she continued as she checked the monitors and the IV that Danny knew he was about to be connected to. “This is a good thing. We have a chance to fix this,“ she turned to look at him with a gentle smile, ”Besides, like we've said before, we'll stop if it isn't safe.“

Danny nodded, but he knew his nerves still showed. His mom knelt down beside him. ”Look,“ she said, looking warmly into his eyes, ”I know this is scary. I know it's hard. But, your father and I are going to be with you the whole way through. I promise, nothing is bad going to happen.”

Danny swallowed his fear. His parents were the experts after all. This would be good. He would finally be able to be around people again. He looked at his parents with as much confidence as he could muster. ”Okay, I'm ready.”

Jack slapped him hard on the back and Danny barely held back a grunt. “Thatta boy!” he said, back to his usual enthusiasm, “Now! Are you ready for the IV?”

The first thing Danny became aware of was the light. It was bright. So bright he could see it through his eyelids. He tried to move his hand to shield his eyes only to find that he couldn't move his arm. That was weird. He tried something smaller, just twitching his finger, only to find he couldn't do that either. He could feel the cool metal beneath them, but the motion itself was out of reach. That was the other thing. He was on something cold and metallic. That was weird.

There was someone murmuring to his right. Their voice was soft and familiar, but he couldn't make out the words. There was a soft clink of metal touching metal.

Danny looked towards the noise only to realize there was a mirror above him. Huh. Apparently his eyes were open. He looked at his face in the mirror. His eyes were closed. Weird.

Then he noticed his chest and his-. No, his breath didn't hitch. His breathing was normal. So was his heartbeat. His thoughts, though, those raced.

In the mirror, he could see himself cut open on the operating table. The incision went from his navel to his sternum and a retractor held his skin, muscles, and layer of fat back, leaving a four-inch-wide opening. He could see his muscles and organs moving inside as he breathed. His ribs peaked out right at the top of the opening. He felt sick and wondered if he would see his stomach move if he wretched.

A scream manifested in his mind, but not his body. Not so much as a twitch indicated his panic. His vitals stayed steady.

His vitals stayed steady and his muscles didn't move.

The most striking part of it, all of it, with all insides on display, was the glowing ball just beneath his lower ribs. It pulsed with a steady rhythm. It flared as he felt the phantom of a hitching breath.

”Remarkable,“ he heard his mother say. As she came into view, he noticed she was in full surgical gear. Her ecto-proof hood was drawn up and her goggles were flipped down. She was wearing a surgical mask. If he hadn’t already heard her speak, Danny would never have recognized her as his mother.

She was doing something with a scalpel and a test tube, but he couldn't quite see what with her hand in the way. He wanted to cry out. He needed to tell her to stop, that was awake, but he couldn't do anything.

His vitals stayed steady.

The little light right beneath his ribcage flared again.

”Absolutely remarkable,“ Maddie repeated, ”Jack come look at this.“

”What is it, Mads?“ Danny saw his Dad come into view. He, too, was dressed for surgery, PPE completely obscuring his face. Maddie pointed at something in his abdomen and Jack leaned over to take a better look, causing Danny to lose sight of them in the mirror as they crowded over him.

“The concentrated ball of ectoplasm here, it’s started to pulse.” She looked over at her husband. “You have the camera in your goggles recording, right?”

“Of course, Maddie,” Jack said, brushing her off with patient affection, “Just like the last few times you asked.”

Maddie sighed. “I know, it’s just, there’s so much to learn.” She gestured to the same place in Danny’s abdomen. “I mean, we’ve theorized about ghost cores, but look at this. It’s close to confirmation.”

“Yes,” Jack said, sounding pleased and proud, “Danny-boy really is something else.”

Danny could feel his mother frown in the silence that followed. He couldn’t see her face. “We have to get this out of him,” she said.

Danny was drenched in sheer, unadulterated panic. No, no, no, no. That was a bad idea. A bad, bad idea. He just knew it. Something bad would happen if they did that.

Jack hummed and furrowed his brow, almost putting his gloved hands on the mask covering his mouth before realizing he shouldn’t. “Is that safe?” he asked, “Look at all those tendons, it’s fused to his rib cage.” He pointed at something else. “And look at those glowing tendrils. I don’t even know what those are.”

“I don’t know,” she said, voice skeptical. She paused. “Maybe we could…” She trailed off, moving closer with her scalpel. All of Danny’s senses screamed in unison: Danger! Danger! Danger!

Maddie stopped and shook her “No, too risky. Even with this thing in him, he’s not in immediate danger.” She turned to her husband. “Jack, let’s just take a few samples and close him back up. We can try again when we have a plan.”

“On it, sweetums! I’ll get more sample bags,” Jack said and Danny felt himself relax. Terror drained out him even as his mind registered that it wasn’t actually good for whatever that was to be in him.

But, now, they were closing him up. It didn’t really matter if he should be relieved or disappointed. All they needed was a few samples and then they could talk about this whenever his muscles allowed him to move again. It would all be okay, just like they promised.

“Now,” Maddie said, narrating her process to her husband, “I’m just going to get a sample of the outer membrane of this-”

Danny felt all the panic flood back into his system. No, she couldn’t! She couldn’t touch it! Something terrible would happen! Everything would -

Her scalpel nicked the membrane of his core and everything went green.

Danny came to awareness drifting in a sea of green. He startled and and jerked. There were purple doors floating around him, structures building and destroying themselves in all directions. In the distance, Danny could see islands suspended in mid air. He swung his arms wildly and flipped over trying to orient himself.

“Careful there, dearie,” a familiar voice said from behind him.

Danny flipped himself around again to find himself face to face with the Lunch Lady. “You!” he shouted, getting ready to fight. He didn’t know where he was or what was going on, but he wasn’t going to let her hurt anyone.

The Lunch Lady put her hands up. “I’m not looking to fight,” she said, “I just wanted to see if you were okay. You reformed in the middle of nowhere, afterall.”

“I reformed?” Danny asked. His mind was spinning. What the hell was going on? The last thing he remembered was being on the operating table and then-

“When a ghost gets hurt badly enough, sometimes they’re core will react by taking them out of the mortal plan and reforming them in what you know as the Ghost Zone.” She put a hand on her cheek, looking thoughtful. “Though, for you, I guess this might be more like a first forming, since you first formed inside yourself and, after that, your mortal body can’t possibly exist anymore.”

Danny’s mind was reeling from the first sentence enough that it took him a few seconds to react to the last. He blinked. “What do you mean my mortal body doesn’t exist anymore.” He was wary. This sounded like a trap.

The Lunch Lady smiled sadly at him with kind eyes. “Someone nicked your core, dearie. It vaporized you.”

That was… There was too much going on there. One thing at a time. “What’s a core?” An image of his mom standing over him and talking excitedly about how this might prove their theories appeared in his mind’s eye. “Is that the glowing thing that was contaminating me?”

“Well, I would call it contamination, dear, it’s-”

“And what do you mean vaporized?” Yeah, okay. Screw one thing at a time. He needed to know everything now.

The Lunch Lady’s smile grew even sadder. “You had a lot of energy in your core, dear. That’s what gives you your form. When it was nicked, all that energy was released and I’m afraid not much can survive that much power. It really was impressive.”

Danny gulped. Okay. Did that mean he was dead dead? Not just kinda dead? Wait, if it vaporized him-

“What about my parents!?” Danny shouted. The Lunch Lady looked like she wanted to cry, but was holding on to her smile as a last facsimile of reassurance.

“I’m sorry dear, they were standing so close to the blast…” She paused, seemingly grasping for words. “It would have been quick,” was what she finally settled on.

Danny clutched at his hair in grief and frustration. “How do you know this?” he asked. Maybe she was wrong. Maybe she was trying to trick him.

The Lunch Lady looked uncomfortable. “Well, there were a lot of echos and I was right near the portal when it happened-”

“No. No!” That couldn’t be right. That had to be a mistake.

“-And ghosts are already starting to form from the blast. That was hard to miss.”

Danny stopped. “What do you mean ghost’s are already starting to form? Are my parents…?” He didn’t dare finish the sentence. He didn’t know how he would feel either way.

“I don’t think so,” the Lunch Lady shook her head, “They were so close to the epicenter and there was so much ecto-energy. They would have already started to form by now.”

An epicenter. Oh God. What did that mean? “What ghosts are starting to form?” he asked again, this time in a whisper. Did he take out the whole house? What Jazz home? Was someone walking by the basement windows? Was there shrapnel?

“I’m sorry, dear, it’s hard to say right now. Amity Park was a big town and-”

“Amity Park?” he asked, cutting her off yet again. She just smiled sadly at him yet again in an oddly patient way. Why did she keep doing that? Just the other week, they had been fighting.

“I guess I won’t be able to hide it forever,” she said. Danny’s heart stopped. Was this where the fight started? Was this all just a trick? “You have a powerful core, and it was even stronger before so much of it was released. Amity Park is gone, dear.”

No. No. No. This was so much worse. He looked at her same sad smile. This wasn’t a trick. This was pity.

She was talking again, but he couldn’t hear her. Why? Why did this happen? He just wanted to help his parents find a cure. He just wanted it to be safe for him to be around his friends. All he wanted to do was make his parents happy. He killed them all instead.

Danny turned away and wailed into the vast expanse of the Ghost Zone, tears streaming down his face.

Code Name: The Incarnation of Oppenheimer's Sin/ The Unsung Hero of Earth: Godzilla/ Gojira: King of Monsters.

Special Containment Procedures: Not only is containment of SCP-ABQ impossible, it is discouraged. SCP-ABQ is essential to the survival of the human race and the preservation of peace between humanity and the Large-Scale Class Anomalies located all over the world hidden under the crust and oceans. Instead, any Group of Interest or anomaly that attacks SCP-ABQ with the intent to kill it is to be met with extreme prejudice.

Description: SCP-ABQ is a Large-Scale Class Anomaly belonging to Species of Interest: The Titans. SCP-ABQ is about 108 meters tall which is typical height for the Titan species. Like most of the Titan species, SCP-ABQ is reptilian in nature with the basic appearance of an Iguana. SCP-ABQ's scales are a very dark gray with large plate-like spikes on its back, acting as intimidation appearance, defensive purposes, and as biological batteries. SCP-ABQ has the particular power to generate fusion based atomic energy within its body that gets processed through the plates on its back. Once it has generated enough energy SCP-ABQ is able to blast atomic fire resulting from the fusion energy within its body, out of its mouth. Quite similar to how a dragon has an organ in its throat that stores hydrogen gas to breath fire.

Surprisingly SCP-ABQ doesn't just make fusion based atomic energy but can also absorb atomic energy to regenerate from any wound. It can even grow stronger when it receives excess energy. Should SCP-ABQ achieve this, it will reach a critical point where its body is constantly releasing fusion energy with a temperature of 500,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot enough to burn everything around it and melt steel instantaneously. SCP-ABQ will also be able to release thermonuclear shockwaves all around it, vaporizing everything, even other Titans.

SCP-ABQ in particular is a Titan known as an Alpha, Alpha Titans rule over other titans without question. This is mainly thanks to the fact that, like all Alpha Titans, SCP-ABQ has the ability to release a frequency that both communicates with and gives commands to other Titans. Naturally this would make SCP-ABQ a hazard for an OK Class Omega Species Uprising Scenario as well as a possible SK Class Dominance Shift Scenario. However, that is not the case regarding SCP-ABQ at all.

SCP-ABQ, unlike most Titans, has no ill will towards humanity so long as humanity does not harm it. Instead, SCP-ABQ stays in the earth's oceans and swims around the world to guard all life on earth. Rather than a tyrant, SCP-ABQ acts as a guardian of earth, defending it from hostile Titans as well as other overwhelming anomalous threats. Though the Foundation and other organizations within the ACPA are grateful for this, why SCP-ABQ does this is unknown.

Futhermore, SCP-ABQ has the ability to spread great amounts of Gaia Radiation. Gaia Radiation, unlike normal radiation that inflicts sterility and increases occurrence of developmental abnormalities, heals and increases quality of life for all fauna and flora. Gaia Radiation is a form of non-electromagnetic radiation that acts like a super vitamin in energy form capable of reaching through any material to affect all living organisms. How exactly this works is not well understood as Gaia Radiation is extremely difficult to contain and often dissipates when it is. Though what is known is that exposure to Gaia Radiation includes nearly instantaneous regeneration and healing and even enhanced growth when exposed for extended periods of time; this applies to all forms of life exposed. Anywhere where a Titan like SCP-ABQ has been will start growing into a lush forest within a single month. It is because of Gaia Radiation that Species of Interest: The Titans exist as large and powerful as they do, despite our laws of nature stating they shouldn't even exist.

SCP-ABQ was discovered in 1954, residing on the deep waters of [data expunged] beach, of Hiroshima. Apparently, it had been there since 1945, absorbing the nuclear energy that did contaminate the city. It was because of SCP-ABQ that the city was able to be rebuilt in two years; however, it was also because of the bomb that SCP-ABQ was awakened. It was for reasons like this that the US Governments, like most governments in the world, are looked at with a negative light by the Foundation.

SCP-ABQ originated from SCP-[data expunged] only coming to the surface to feed on the sudden influx of atomic energy during World War 2. Since then, for better or worse SCP-ABQ has influenced the anomalous world. Please See Addendum X-23 for details

Addendum X-23

The following is a list of what SCP-ABQ has done since its awakening as well as the exact years of its activities.

1955 - SCP-3700-1 battles SCP-3700-2 but is nearly defeated especially with the growing population of SCP-3456 instances. However, SCP-ABQ intervenes and with its atomic breath, destroys all the SCP-3456 instances and greatly injures SCP-3700-2. From there SCP-3700-1 and SCP-ABQ fight against SCP-3700-2 and are overwhelmingly victorious. Afterwards SCP-ABQ leaves, and SCP-3700-1 proceeds to bring good weather to the area. SCP-ABQ was reported by Naval Task Force Delta-7 to have appeared quite a few times as the years went by. It always assisted SCP-3700-1 and completely obliterated SCP-3700-2.

1961 - Foundation staff discovered SCP-[data expunged] on the island of [data expunged] causing it to awaken not long after. SCP-[data expunged] forced all Foundation staff off of the island and later cocooned itself. After about a day, SCP-[data expunged] evolved into its second form. This was where SCP-ABQ rose up from the ocean and addressed SCP-[data expunged] with a surprisingly friendly manner.

SCP-[data expunged] and SCP-ABQ separated afterwards, Foundation staff returned to the island for further research. Natives of the island told Dr. [data expunged] that SCP-[data expunged] was Mothra, queen of monsters, meanwhile SCP-ABQ is Gojira, King of Monsters. Later the natives introduced the Foundation to historical paintings and records allowing Foundation staff to understand Species of Interest: The Titans.

1964 false - SCP-[data expunged] as well as many other SCP-[data expunged] instances awakened from the earth's crust or surface form SCP-[data expunged]. SCP-ABQ and SCP-[data expunged] battled them all while receiving reinforcements in heavy firepower by the Foundation and other ACPA organizations. SCP-[data expunged] was killed as a result and SCP-ABQ was recognized as the Alpha again. Unfortunately, the end result was 78% of the human population being wiped out. Under protocol "No Humanity" the remaining 22% was executed before the activation of SCP-2000.

1964 True - SCP-ABQ and SCP-[data expunged] were not affected by SCP-2000 and even became the unconditional Alphas of all SCP-[data expunged] instances. SCP-ABQ then ordered all SCP-[data expunged] instances to retreat into SCP-[data expunged] allowing humanity to thrive in peace.

1971 - Foundation researchers discover the island known as SCP-[data expunged] as well as SCP-[data expunged]-Alpha. SCP-ABQ arrives on the island and fights with SCP-[data expunged]-Alpha. However, their fight is interrupted by the sudden appearance of SCP-[data expunged]-1 instances. Once SCP-[data expunged]-Omega appears, SCP-ABQ and SCP-[data expunged]-ALPHA battle and are eventually victorious. Because of their victory an unspoken peace was established between the two as SCP-ABQ left the island.

1974 - Group of Interest: The Imperial Japanese Anomalous Matters Examination Agency created a mechanical monstrosity known as SCP-[data expunged] in the likeness of SCP-ABQ. It was unleashed on Japan and was meant to be a symbol of the rebirth of Japan's Imperialism over the world as well as its revenge for WWII. However, SCP-ABQ as well as SCP-[data expunged] fought against the mechanical monstrosity and after about a day it was finally defeated.

The result was several coastal Japanese cities being destroyed and the overall situation nearly leading to an MK Class Broken Masquerade Scenario. Thankfully though SCP-[data expunged] was defeated and a majority of its parts were contained within the Foundation. However there has been confirmation that other Groups of Interest managed to get smaller parts that might have anomalous properties. A Joint Task Force of Gamma-5 "Red Herrings” and Poseidon-3 "Otaku Heart" was formed to silence the media and erase the memories of the entire event. The cover story was that a horrible typhoon hit the coast of Japan resulting in the destruction of the cities.

1989 - SCP-722 woke up and wreaked havoc on the surrounding areas, this somehow resulted in SCP-3000 surfacing, leading to a fight between the two. The Fight led to the complete destruction of the island [data expunged] located in the [data expunged] ocean. The coastal city of [data expunged] was unfortunately affected by SCP-722's toxins and the survivors suffered from SCP-3000's Cognito hazardous effects leading to [data expunged]. They were later killed off by the Foundation since there was no way to save them.

Before the rampaging could continue Mobile Task Force Apollo-1 "Orion's Belt" tried to bombard both entities, forcing them back into the depths. However, SCP-3000 somehow knew of the MTF Apollo-1 ships moving into position of engagement. It retaliated by screaming into the sky, directly towards the MTF Apollo-1 ships, with a sonic vibration capable of various Cognito hazardous effects. Most Foundation staff, MTF units, and pilots died upon contact while others suffered heavy brain degradation similar to Stage 5 of Alzheimer's Disease. This resulted in MTF Apollo-1 suffering over [data expunged] in casualties as well as losing a total of [data expunged] ships as well as the SCPSS "Victory" and the SCPSS "Armageddon" both of which where GBSWD-53 "Black Hole" dreadnought class ships.

With nothing to stop them, SCP-3000 eventually overpowered SCP-722, forcing it to serve under SCP-3000. SCP-3000 and SCP-722 moving fast with its trajectory destination being Site-[data expunged]. It started traveling via SCP-[data expunged], this action alone angered SCP-ABQ causing it to act. SCP-ABQ intercepted SCP-3000 and SCP-722, being immune to both of their anomalous attacks. SCP-ABQ quickly overwhelmed the two with its strength as well as its atomic breath. Once SCP-3000 and SCP-722 were stunned due to massive injuries, SCP-ABQ tried to secure the kill until [data expunged] appeared. [data expunged]; afterwards, it healed SCP-3000 and forced SCP-722 back to slumber. SCP-ABQ and SCP-3000 left each other in peace and [data expunged] vanished from sight.

It is unknown as to why Site-[data expunged] was SCP-3000's destination, though Dr. [data expunged] believes it might be related to SCP-[data expunged].

1990 - SCP-5514 construction is complete however at the same time SCP-ABQ starts heading to Site-[data expunged] where it is being held. SCP-5514 was about to be deployed into battle but instead MTF High Commander Yōsai gave the command to have SCP-5514 bow to SCP-ABQ upon arrival.

SCP-5514 met with SCP-ABQ at the coast of [data expunged] afterwards SCP-ABQ started roaring to which SCP-5514 bowed to it as MTF High Commander Yōsai commanded. Like he predicted, SCP-ABQ accepted and returned to the ocean instead of fighting. MTF Gamma-5 worked around the clock to distribute amnestics to everyone while Mobile Task Force Dionysus-1 "Fake News" intercepted all newspaper outlets to present the leaked photos of SCP-ABQ and SCP-5514 as leaked special effects from an upcoming movie "Godzilla: King of Monsters vs the Dragon Slayer." TriStar Pictures was asked by the Foundation to create this movie to make the lie more authentic. They successfully created the movie in 1998, it was a massive flop at the box office.

1997 - SCP-169 started becoming active and moving at slowly increasing speeds. SCP-ABQ swam to SCP-169 and grabbed onto its stomach area where it started draining its body heat. Doing this slowed down SCP-169 allowing Mobile Task Force Gamma-6 "Deep Feeders" to attach the Large-Scale Anesthetic Injection device into SCP-169's gills without worry. Ensuring SCP-169 would go back to sleep. SCP-ABQ noticed the MTF Gamma-6 submarine but only glanced then swam away.

2000 - The Global Occult Coalition and Eight Wings of Mekhane created their own equivalents to SCP-5514 in preparation in accordance with ACPA protocol "The Bigger Boot". SCP-ABQ appeared before both of them as well, the Eight Wings of Mekhane had their giant mech bow immediately while the Global Occult Coalition nearly decided to just kill SCP-ABQ. It was only thanks to [data expunged] that they stopped themselves and their mecha finally bowed as well. Afterwards MTF Gamma-5 and MTF Dionysus-1 did the same procedures as the first incident with SCP-5514. It even led to the Global Occult Coalition to asking Legendary Entertainment to create "Godzilla & Mothra VS The Living Fortress & The Living Temple" since they bought rights to the "Godzilla Brand" after the TriStar Pictures flop. They finally succeeded in 2014, it was also a massive flop at the box office with critics asking, "Where do they come up with these stupid ideas?" and "The Robots look so stupid, there's no way any government in the world would create something so ridiculous". Several GOC representatives were especially annoyed upon hearing that.

2006 - SCP-ABQ was wandering the oceans of [data expunged] until it found a dying SCP-[data expunged] with what was clearly some eggs belonging to the species. SCP-ABQ seemingly roared out and SCP-[data expunged] appeared from the oceans seemingly by using SCP-[data expunged] as transportation. SCP-[data expunged] released a harmonic song that eased the SCP-[data expunged] instance as it died. Afterwards both SCP-[data expunged] and SCP-ABQ carried as many eggs as they could and transported them into SCP-[data expunged]. As of 20[data expunged] the species of SCP-[data expunged] now thrives well within SCP-[data expunged].

2011 false - Instances of SCP-[data expunged] started waking up all over the world. As a response SCP-ABQ, SCP-[data expunged], SCP-[data expunged]-Alpha, and several SCP-[data expunged] instances went out to fight the emerging SCP-[data expunged] instances. SCP-5514 as well as the GOC's and EWM's mechas were deployed in the "Infected" areas. Unfortunately, the conflict ended in 82% of the world's population being wiped out. Under Protocol "Last Chance" the remaining 18% were evacuated from earth and sent to Site-AI as well as other Foundation off earth colonies. Afterwards SCP-2000 was activated and rebuilt the earth without affecting SCP-ABQ or the others.

2011 true - The remaining SCP-[data expunged] instances that did not surface were collected and contained by newly constructed underground Foundation recon bases around the world. Those that couldn't be contained were killed on sight. Unfortunately, several SCP-[data expunged] instances have been sighted within SCP-[data expunged]. Efforts to purge them and stop the "infection" are ongoing.

Side Note: In their victory SCP-[data expunged] and SCP-ABQ mated, which was very surprising since one is an insectoid and the other is reptilian. However, it was proven possible as SCP-[data expunged] started laying eggs the year afterwards. The eggs are located in [data expunged].

2013 - The first instance of SCP-[data expunged] manifested but was killed off by SCP-ABQ almost immediately, thankfully before it reached the surface. From that point on every six months either SCP-ABQ or SCP-5514 killed any SCP-[data expunged] instance that appeared.

2021 - A secret base at the island of SCP-[data expunged] owned by Group of Interest: Anderson Robotics developed a new instance of SCP-[data expunged], including old pieces from the original instance. It quickly goes out of control after being fueled by [data expunged] as such SCP-[data expunged]-Alpha fights in but is quickly overpowered. Thankfully SCP-ABQ shows up and saves him and once again the two work together to fight SCP-[data expunged]. However, even then they are close to losing, forcing the Foundation to deploy SCP-5514, finally giving them the winning tide until they are victorious. Once again, they leave one another in peace.

2023 - The eggs started hatching leading to the birth of SCP-[data expunged] and SCP-[data expunged]. Surprisingly SCP-[data expunged] ended up bonding with [data expunged] who was only 5 years old and was there out of coincidence. This was especially alarming as it related to the mural found in [data expunged], said to be a prophecy.

NASA image release April 27, 2012 The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has been at the cutting edge of research into what happens to stars like our sun at the ends of their lives. One stage that stars pass through as they run out of nuclear fuel is called the preplanetary or protoplanetary nebula stage. This Hubble image of the Egg Nebula shows one of the best views to date of this brief but dramatic phase in a star’s life. The preplanetary nebula phase is a short period in the cycle of stellar evolution, and has nothing to do with planets. Over a few thousand years, the hot remains of the aging star in the center of the nebula heat it up, excite the gas, and make it glow as a subsequent planetary nebula. The short lifespan of preplanetary nebulae means there are relatively few of them in existence at any one time. Moreover, they are very dim, requiring powerful telescopes to be seen. This combination of rarity and faintness means they were only discovered comparatively recently. The Egg Nebula, the first to be discovered, was first spotted less than 40 years ago, and many aspects of this class of object remain shrouded in mystery. At the center of this image, and hidden in a thick cloud of dust, is the nebula’s central star. While we can’t see the star directly, four searchlight beams of light coming from it shine out through the nebula. It is thought that ring-shaped holes in the thick cocoon of dust, carved by jets coming from the star, let the beams of light emerge through the otherwise opaque cloud. The precise mechanism by which stellar jets produce these holes is not known for certain, but one possible explanation is that a binary star system, rather than a single star, exists at the center of the nebula. The onion-like layered structure of the more diffuse cloud surrounding the central cocoon is caused by periodic bursts of material being ejected from the dying star. The bursts typically occur every few hundred years. The distance to the Egg Nebula is only known very approximately, the best guess placing it at around 3,000 light-years from Earth. This in turn means that astronomers do not have any accurate figures for the size of the nebula (it may be larger and further away, or smaller but nearer). This image is produced from exposures in visible and infrared light from Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.

Can you tell me a bit more about Fae in Cold Iron? How common are they, what powers do they have, just what flavour of Fae are they?

It's very important to me that the Fae not be sexy magical elves, but have the air of mystery, lack of logic, and general danger that one gets from older legends or, say, @elsewhereuniversity. So Fae all look different than humans with no real pattern and no regard for genetics. They are generally humanoid but their skin can be different colors and textures, their eyes range from differently colored to blank and empty to full of stars, they may have horns or claws or fangs, numbers of appendages are negotiable, etc. Some of them have hollowed out backs full of plants. Some look almost human but just different enough to seem Wrong and dangerous but also painfully, enticingly beautiful.

That last bit is mostly glamour. Fae as a general rule twist the truth rather than lying, but it doesn't hurt to make yourself more attractive to gain trust and distract the target. It's also part of the image of beautiful and intimidating beings and they have a reputation to maintain.

Fae are made of dreams and nightmares and lore, so they can change. Most of them don't know this. They spend most of their time in their own realm (in which dream logic applies, twig forts seem like castles, clouds are made of cotton candy, and Things lurk behind every corner--it can drive an unprepared human mad).

Human children are prized, and it depends on the Fae how they are used once acquired. Some are mere servants who grow at a human rate but are status symbols because of the sacrifice and difficulty in obtaining one. But they've never known any other life and, honestly, they're more second-class citizens than slaves. They work hard and can't leave but have time to themselves and their own social structure, although the Land of Faerie is extremely dangerous to them. Other humans are treated more like adopted children or entertainment. It is not uncommon to freeze their aging based on what they are wanted for, and eternal human children with all their laughter and innocence are particularly popular.

Fae are not immortal, by the way. They just may as well be. As long as they live in their own realm, time bends and stretches and loops around and passes so differently that they might take a nap and have 100 years pass among humans. Fae that leave their own realm to live here have lifespans of anywhere from 300-2000 years, but they do age and die.

Which brings me to Wild Fae and changelings. It is the ancient rule that human children may not be stolen, only traded. This may be through deals or the trade of something so precious it needs no deal--their own children. Fae children are not common or it would become too crowded, but they do exist. It is usually the weaker ones that are given up in trade, so many of them die a natural death young and the human parents never know their child still lives. Sadly, most of the remaining ones are mistreated from the moment their parents realize that their own child is gone. They appear as human babies and the truly noticeable Fae traits don't begin until they are they reach 8-12 (this is true only among Fae children raised here, as their true appearance is masked with a complex glamour that wears off over time). But their behavior and needs are not quite human and others can tell they aren't right. Very few of these children live to be old enough to discover that their aging slows when they reach 15. Generally after that, they will age 1 year for every 2-5 that pass. Changelings that live longer than 500 years are unheard of even in the best of circumstances, what with all the iron exposure in our world. Adult changelings provide some proof that Fae can change their nature, if anyone were to look at the data: they tend to have more human motivations than is in the nature of other Fae and, more obviously, they can lie. One of Shakatra's main tricks is to order something and then convince the person they already paid for it.

Wild Fae are very different but there is a bit of overlap. These are Fae raised in their own realm who chose to move to ours. These are not the Fae that wander the woods tricking people, providing a night of passion with eternal debt or making impossible deals with desperate humans. Those tend to be more noble Fae with more freedom and power (the more magical power a Fae has, the more social power they have. This is a direct correlation because horrible things tend to happen to someone who tries to take more social power than they can fight to hold onto). Wild Fae may be after wealth or the kind of power they cannot get at home, but most of them live on the fringes, preying on vulnerable people and living in rough groups. Most of them were either banished for an offense or treated so poorly they would rather be anywhere else, because most of our world is poison to them for long periods. I need to figure out more of what they do with their time later, but I do know that sometimes they take in abandoned changelings, but they don't treat them kindly. Kris ran away from such a group when he was 7 because being alone was preferable.

Annnnnnd I just re-read your ask and realized I didn't answer either of the questions you actually asked. So: all Fae have some glamour ability, some Sight (not necessarily of the future, but of the truth of things), and a natural tendency towards trickery. Most have some other magical ability, but they vary widely, from fire/ice/other elements to plants to speaking with/controlling animals to making words/images become real to shapeshifting, and on and on. They follow no more logic than their appearances, but generally there is overlap between the weakest Fae magic and the abilities of the strongest human sorcerers. Shakatra, having honed their ability in a fight-to-survive kind of way, is strong for a changeling but that still puts them on par with the lowest of the 9 noble ranks. Changelings build up some immunity from direct iron contact, but the constant exposure keeps them relatively weak.

As for how many, it is literally impossible to say how many exist, but there are small clusters of Wild Fae in most human cities. Few people notice them and they tend to cause fairly minor mischief.

Oh, and of course Names have power. So every Fae has a true name--which tends to be long--and something they are called. Fae have a natural attachment to a single true name and do not need to change their moniker, but changelings and humans with common Fae interactions do because we are likely to get attached to something we are called for too long until it begins to describe us.

Thank you! I'll take a moment to talk about a topic I'm super passionate about which is suicide prevention and mental health awareness so this is warning it's gonna get really sad

This song always makes me think of his as he was such a gifted piano player and so graceful like the song but the dissonance slowly breaks your heart

Luke was one of the most most gentle, considerate, and talented individuals I've ever had the pleasure of sharing space with. He was brilliantly smart and played piano, cello, keyboard, and clarinet. We talked often in our classes together and back stages making jokes when waited for shows to start, and bring raised religiously, he had lots of questions about the real world and my exposure to it.

Our sophomore year, on a vacation to Nashville, Luke was harassed by several boys our year for taking photos at the pool. While I don't condone taking photographs of unaware people, it should be known that same year our varsity quarterback was expelled for actually taking pictures up a teachers skirt, so when they took video cornering him in the hotel until he admitted he was gay...

He struggled with his sexuality and depression for so long, and I was just a teenage girl myself. It wasnt always easy being Luke's friend. I had my own shit to sort, and Luke sometimes felt like the little brother nagging you to be better. The day he asked me to smoke weed for the first time sent a chill down my spine. He was hurting so bad, he'd given up on his ethics and moral code to soothe the pain.

I've seen many reactions to getting stoned, but I was so hurt when he was angry with me.

" give me that shit. stupid ass drugs "

In my anger I hadn't realized how scared he must have been

I took him home to sleep it off

And he started to get much more distant, but still around like a shell of his old, bubbly self

His first attempt was in the garage; he left the car on with the garage door closed.

His little sister found him, pulled him out and called his parents

She just graduated holding his picture

His second attempt, he did at school; he took half a bottle of caffeine medication, and collapsed. He was ambulanced to the hospital and there for three weeks for treatment. Medications and therapy and isolation

When he came back, so behind on class, and unfamiliar with his pieces for band, he looked me in the eyes and said,

" i go to where I want to die and look sometimes. If I try again... I'm going to succeed."

I have never hated someone so much as that moment. To put that on my shoulders when I can barely spend a night sober. I don't want you around me so I can influence you, and now Im responsible for keeping you alive

I went to an adult at the school, one of the only ones who truly knew what was going on, and she told me,

" you hit rock bottom and came back up. Sometimes you just have to let them ride it out. "

This is the same the woman who I told I was being abused and replied, " no you and him don't have the healthiest relationship but it could be worse!!"

On Monday, November 17th, 2019, he sat down at his table of 4.0 math whizzes and said,

" what would happen if you jumped off a bridge?"

And unbeknownst to those poor boys, with their textbooks and brains, they would go through gravity and angle prospects with a boy who would jump from an interstate overpass less than a mile away in less than 12 hours.

Our last interaction, in 7th period, study hall, that day, he asked me to borrow my computer charger, and instead of coming to sit next to me, he took it back to his seat. He brought it back at the end and he stared blankly at the wall before final bell.

I bump his shoulder and ask if he's good

Luke's last words are ones I cant say alone to this day

"it's just one of those days, I guess."

He didn't not leave a note, or a text

He did not say goodbye to me

He is buried in a graveyard less than 1000 meters from my mother's house

This song is the only real memory of the time I have after; its the only thing that helped my out of body feeling

I have never been the same without him, and will always wonder if I could have done more.

I miss him and go sit with him and talk with him alot.

It was painful to write this. I am crying. But you should be too. Everyone should. Luke deserved better and my community failed him.

I would do anything in my power to ensure no one else has to experience this pain. Because it hurts today just as awful as it did years ago.

Please, if you are struggling. Think about your loved ones and those who love them. Your pain will not disappear. It will transfer to everyone around you.

I genuinely would rather hear you rant, cry or scream than hear your obituary

I feel like you’d give good advice so here goes nothing

there’s this girl I’ve known since kindergarten. We were super close our whole life, we’ve always gone to the same schools. In elementary and middle we were best friends but she grew up super religious (and she’s scared of her parents punishing her they’re really strict) and around eighth grade she started saying things I disagreed with, so freshman year I grew apart. This is the first year since then we have the same classes, and I was planning on being polite but not close friends, but it seems she’s trying hard to change? Like she’ll say something and then catch herself with a “they’re just living their life sorry, idk why I said that”. We’re also in a few of the same clubs so this past year we have grown back together but idk how to feel about it, she still has a lot to go, and I don’t know how she’ll react if she find out about my bisexuality. I really do care about her but idk if I should kind of let it go. She really has made a huge change in terms of acceptance.

I can only share my thoughts and how I would approach a situation like this; no advice I give is official, so please take and leave what you want at your leisure. I will do my best, though.

The first things I'd say are that there's no one right course of action, and there's no right way to feel about it all. All you can do is weigh the variety of reasonable options for you and pick what works best according to what you're comfortable with and suits your needs/wants. And not knowing how to feel about it is okay and perfectly understandable. You're not alone in trying to figure out what to think and feel about people you care about who hold/have held hurtful beliefs.

I would say that if you want to hold onto this relationship, and you feel comfortable enough to give this person the attention, time, and work it may take, then do so. People can and do change, and past actions aren't permanent indicators of their present. She may have further to go, but it sounds like she may be on the way to going that distance. Your presence and input may even help and encourage her on that path--but do not mistake this as an obligation. Exposure and direct learning can be an invaluable tool for those correcting themselves, but it is no way a responsibility you must bear. Only take it on if you want to and are up for it, and there's no shame in backing out.

There is also no shame in acknowledging that you're hesitant and uncomfortable about this relationship. Even as and once people improve, they are not owed space in other people's lives who they've hurt. If whatever she's said in the past is significantly important for you that you decide you don't want to continue, that's okay.

I think perhaps in thinking this over (because I can't tell you what to do), you could ask yourself: do I want to be her friend still, is that safe and possible, what would that require from me, and how much of all this thought do I want her to know? I personally think as much forthcoming honesty with the other party as possible is usually ideal, but I know it's not always possible. But be as clear with her as you can be, I would say.

There are, of course, questions beyond that you can consider, but they're a few to get you started. What do you want, how can that be achieved (if it can be), etc. Hopefully that will help make your path forward and what you should do for your ideal outcome clearer. I don't know how much help this all is, but I hope some of it is of use, and my asks are always open if you'd ever like to talk further :)

Seeing the Kimono Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was nothing short of fascinating. The craftsmanship that went into these garments is jarring to see up close, and as a designer it inspired me to explore more ancient garments like the Kimono. The silhouette of the Kimono (Japanese), was developed in the Heian Period, and was also known as the straight-line-cut method. This gave flexibility in terms of sizing, and fitting everyone’s body shape. They were also made using breathable fabrics such as linen in the warmer months, that could then be layered for warmth in the winter. As time went on and the Kimono became a staple in the Japanese daily life, colors were explored. Depending on seasons, political views, or class, color combinations were pinpointed for the Kimono Garments. Speaking of social class, the Japanese also changed the silhouette of the Kimono depending on societal rankings. Everyday citizens had straighter, more classic sleeves that made it easy to move around (mobility). High class individuals wore flared sleeves, and more accentuated kimonos that were more difficult to move around in. As shown in the 3rd photo, China also took inspiration from the classic Japanese garment. This piece is actually called a ceremonial robe, but you can see the similarities with silhouette and embellishments in comparison to the traditional Japanese Kimono.

Countries such as China and Korea were the first to produce silk, the upper-class fabric used to make Kimonos. The production of these elite-targeted garments brought foreign influences, and techniques throughout the years. Besides the high demand for silk, brocade-weaving and tapestry-weaving were also introduced. Different dyeing techniques using wax, or paste-resist methods were also used to create the vivid colors. Over the years, technology has advanced due to the exposure of new cultures, and the increased trade with the west. The loom was introduced, creating even more complex fabrics for the Kimono.

While we explored the Kimono Exhibit, I was really intrigued by the use of modern-day designs to showcase how the traditional Japanese Kimono has influenced designers today. As shown in the last photo, Comme de Garçons was showcased, with their Spring/Summer 2018 piece entitled: Ensemble. The modern, playfulness of Japan is apparent with the print design and color scheme, however the classic Kimono silhouette shines through it all. I also have to mention the beautiful artwork entitled “Seashell” by Issey Miyake (1985). As you can tell, the dimension of the jacket is incredibly futuristic. Almost like a sculpture, the ribbed lines act as contours. Issey Miyake was a prime example of taking his Japanese roots and amplifying it for the future. As a young designer who is still learning about costume history, I find it so fascinating that all of the classics still play a key role in our industry today.

When we’re on the treadmill, we’re more likely to be thinking about what SZA track to queue up or whether we’re going to make it another mile than what’s in our workout clothing.

But your favorite sports bra or well-worn pair of leggings is likely to be made from synthetic fabrics like Spandex, nylon and polyester, all of which are essentially plastics. These materials are made from petrochemicals and are often formulated with harmful chemical additives like phthalates and bisphenols.

Now, new research shows sweat leaches chemical additives from plastics and those chemicals are then available to be absorbed through our skin.

What Did The Study Find?

The study focused on a class of compounds called brominated flame retardants (BFR), which are used to prevent burning in a wide range of consumer products including fabrics, and are linked to adverse health effects such as thyroid disease, hormonal disruption and neurological issues. Researchers at the University of Birmingham found that because sweat contains oil, and oil has a lipophilic chemical nature that encourages the chemicals in plastic to dissolve and diffuse, the oil in your body can leach chemicals from the plastics you touch.

In short, oily substances in our sweat “help the bad chemicals to come out of the microplastic fibers and become available for human absorption”, says Dr Mohamed Abdallah, an associate professor in environmental science at the University of Birmingham, and the principal investigator of the study.

The Birmingham team focused on flame retardants, which are added to some fabrics but not particularly associated with sportswear, and ran test cases based on how much sweat and plastic interface when people are just sitting around at home. Further research is required to establish the type and quantity of chemicals a sweaty gym-goer would absorb from their synthetic workout wear and the gym environment.

But Abdallah says the study implies that other chemical plastic additives, like bisphenols (which have been found at up to 40 times the safe limit of exposure in items from popular sportswear brands), phthalates and PFAS, “may leach out into sweat and become available for dermal absorption”. These findings can be “logically extrapolated in terms of someone who is running and sweating intensely”, he notes. Essentially, the more you sweat, the more chemicals you could absorb.

Why Does This Matter?

Previously, researchers have tended to focus on our exposure to plastic through diet, but the Birmingham study raises awareness that humans can be exposed to plastic chemicals through our skin, too. And because harmful chemicals in plastics bioaccumulate – or accrue slowly and stick around in our bodies – repeated and multi-source exposure can result in having high concentrations of chemicals inside us, potentially contributing to health effects.

New research published in the journal Environmental Pollution last month found a total of 25 flame retardants in the breast milk of 50 US mothers; every sample included certain flame retardant compounds which the US began phasing out a decade ago due to known harms. Another study this August found increasing rates of cancer among Americans under 50, particularly women, with gastrointestinal, endocrine (including thyroid) and breast cancers rising fastest. Although the exact cause of this surge remains undetermined, experts speculate that exposure to a wide range of harmful pollutants and carcinogenic chemicals is a contributing factor.

Alden Wicker’s 2023 book, To Dye For: How Toxic Fashion is Making Us Sick, delves into the many ways we’re exposed to chemicals through our clothing. According to Wicker, workout wear, especially clothing marketed as “sweat-wicking” or water-repellent, often contains PFAS, the notoriously carcinogenic and pervasive family of “forever chemicals”. Due to industrial contamination and widespread use in everything from frying pans to toilet paper, you can find some quantity of PFAS just about anywhere, but they can appear in high concentrations in clothes treated with certain high-performance, water-resistant finishings. “Things like Gore-Tex, that’s just pizzazz,” she says. “That’s just a type of PFAS coating.”

Wicker notes that polyester fabrics are usually colored with disperse dyes – a family of chemical colorants used on plastics that are known skin irritants, particularly for children and people with sensitive conditions like eczema.

And that’s just the toxins we know about. “Research shows that many more chemicals are present in everyday plastic products than ‘just’ the notorious ones, such as [flame retardants],” says Martin Wagner, a biologist studying the effects of plastics on humans at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, who is unaffiliated with the Birmingham study. “The latest estimates indicate that there are more than 13,000 plastic chemicals. Since most of these are not investigated for their health or environmental impacts, there is an urgent need to improve the safety of plastics,” he wrote in an email.

Opaque supply chains mean that even manufacturers aren’t aware of everything that is in their plastic products. “Most fashion brands do not know who is dying and finishing and manufacturing their materials,” says Wicker. “And those suppliers will be incentivized to do things as cheaply as possible, to get cheaper chemicals from uncertified sources that could be contaminated with heavy metals and other hazardous substances.”

What Should I Do About It?

An easy way to avoid exposure to these chemicals is to wear clothing made of sustainably produced, minimally processed natural textiles, which don’t contain the toxins associated with plastic materials. Check fabric labels for items that are predominantly organic cotton, hemp or merino wool (some percentage of elastane or Lycra in workout wear is almost inevitable, for stretch). Seek out meaningful designations from third-party textile certifiers like the Global Organic Textile Standard (Gots) and OEKO-TEX, and visit brand websites to see if they make an effort to list their suppliers; they best know where their products come from, down to their dye houses and mills.

California’s Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. But stricter federal legislation is needed to ensure consumer products do not contain harmful chemicals regardless of which state they are sold in.

One recent brand survey found that 72% of respondents would buy plastic-free sportswear if it was readily available. Yet, even with the best intentions, “it can be expensive to get rid of all your synthetics and overhaul your wardrobe”, says Wicker. “I would say do it a little bit at a time unless you have chronic health issues, serious concerns or you react to some of these materials.”

Abdallah says he minimizes synthetic fabrics in his home and works out wearing natural fibers like cotton. “Why be exposed to these chemicals at even low levels?” he says. “Why not avoid the risks?”
