I was trying to do this for the @feanorianweek but I wasn’t able to finish it. and then I tried to do a more simplified Maglor (just as I had done with Maedhros). At this point I don’t think I’ll finish it.  Maybe I will, or maybe I won’t.  Looks promising.

I just want to finish it because it’s been long since I painted something as difficult (even more so, using the damned cintiq -which I kinda hate).

My graphic novel, The Black Violin, is due out on May 3th! It’s been a lengthy most complicated road I’ve tread since I started it, but next week I’ll have it on my hands. I’m SO excited I can cry of joy.  Here’s the cover for the first limited printing.  Done with pencil and colored with PS and Cintiq.  This is just the front cover. The illustration shown here actually goes front and back. ^^

After so, but OH SO MANY problems with Cintiqs, I could finally start to finish pending drawings (I need to update you guys on the cintiq issue). Anywaaaaay, these are two OCs of my new comic project as shown on their wedding date (the new comic is not a rom-com, no. But I though it would be cute to draw them when they got married. The comic will feature them almost 20 years after this picture). I’m happy that despite it all, I’ve been able to find a work around to paint on the Cintiq (which is why I bought it on the first place).  Even though it’s a simple drawing I kinda like how it turned out. Painted with PS and Cintiq 22 HD entirely on the computer.

(Eng / Spa) Scenes from my #graphicnovel . I wish I could post more sneak peaks but since this is totally a plot driven novel, panels are plot-sensitive and it will spoil A LOT of the fun. But here’s a sneak peek. My apologies for those who have been asking the release date. I am aware that it was meant to come out at the beginning of this year but publishing delays have made the whole thing harder. I’m doing the best I can to keep thing moving along! don’t despair. It will be published! I worked so hard for 2 1/2 years! It is set during the historian era and has a English Gothic flavor! ❤️. Esta es mi #novelagrafica! Mil perdones si no puedo postear más imágenes y a lo mejor ya vieron mucho de lo mismo pero me temo que les echaría a perder la trama si posteo otras viñetas. Done testing #shminckewatercolor. I took some photos of the process. The colors are super nice. I'd recommend this brand. Right next to my beloved Windsor and Newton set. I'll be uploading a video with the process tomorrow. Decided to do a little post about my favorite materials :D 

Sketching: 2mm staedler mechanical pencil, 2mm lead sharpener, 2mm HB leads. Derwent pencils (watercolor and sketching). Non-photoblue Col-Erase (for comic outline). Uni color leads for watercolor sketching (purple) and perspective sketching (Teal) -for this I use a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil. I like techniclick Pentel the most- and Hybrid pentel Japan pen (for storyboards or quick sketches).

Watercolor: for watercolor my absolute favorites are Windsor & Newton Watercolors (artist are shown here) and Schminke half pans (although I prefer the latter). Also, PH Martin’s concentrated watercolors. For brushes: Windsor & Newton Cotman Series (synthetic) and Series 7 (natural hair). My absolute favorite is round #4. As for waterbrushes I prefer holbain (for its larger water deposit). 

As you can see I listed gouache with watercolor. I recently started using it<3 . I’ve been using them for finishing touches  (gouache is an opaque type of watercolor. That is = not transparent). I favor w&N and Schminke gouache. 

For Masking fluid I adore the liquid schminke frisket. White touches are done with the Uni roll pen.  

My watercolor paper of choice: Arches (be it hot pressed or cold pressed / 300gms 100% cotton). I also like Baohong paper (chinese paper).

For colored pencils: Prismacolor premiere and Derwent (there was a time when I used prismacolor premiere exclusively). I know many of you favor Faber Castell, but I do not like them. Sorry! If you don’t like prismacolor, Derwent is a pretty neat brand. I recommend it a lot. Pretty consisted in quality standards. I use their drawing pencil branch for many things.

Inking: I rarely ink (not even comics) but when I do ink I use the following: Pigma micron and copic multiliner. I prefer a series 7 #2 brush for inking. Cuiloa is a mexican ink but oh god! it’s so* worth getting your hands on it. It’s really black and waterproof. All markers are waterproof as well (good for me since I do watercolor).  As for white ink, I like PH Martin’s white ink.

Sketchbooks: I use several depending on what I want to sketch.  Regular sketches are made on the huge one below (the one with the 3 characters). It is a strathmore notebook  (36 x 30 cms). For watercolor I prefer moleskine all the way. Look no further. For storyboard and comic planning, I like Canson sketchbook notebooks. Cheap and they do endure a lot of handling. I use a fixative to prevent pencil from fading out, specially on comic notebooks (although nowadays I use my trusted hybrid pentel pen to do all the storyboards). 

For Digital: I have a wacom 22 HD but before, I used to get by with my trusted intous 3. Now I have a Cintiq and I use it with photoshop mainly. I have Clip Studio but I do prefer photoshop. I use a purchased color wheel (coolorus). Since this is the only feature I do miss when working on photoshop.

Also, I prefer traditional over digital. Most of my comics are done traditionally (perspective also is done traditionally). I only use computer to color them for time saving purposes.

Announcement and Cintiq update (after almost a year of use)

ON TO THE ANNOUNCEMENT well, I have an account in DA (Devian Art). I don’t like free DA. I really hate it and having my card cloned after trying to pay for a subscription again pushed me over the edge and prompted me to leave for good. So, I am permanently moving here for better or worse. I’ll soon be moving all my stuff here, hoping my DA followers will follow me here (not saying I’ll move all my gallery. Most of the stuff posted there is SO OLD and nowadays I’m focusing on making comics. But some drawings will be posted here)

I’m not gonna close the account in case I change my mind but I do recommend you to follow me here because I am not uploading anything there anymore.

Please, be a little patience.  I am still figuring out tumblr because I’m thick and the system is... different :P. I’m also figuring out a schedule to post because I started working on my second graphic novel and my web comic. I really want to be constant in updating this blog. I have lots of drawings (especially watercolors) that never ever make it to the web but I want to change that. I want to be a disciplined artist and most of it all show you what I had hidden under my work desk

I probably will alternate languages. So if you speak spanish don’t fret, I’ll post in spanish as well.

In the meantime I cross post from Instagram (which are basically sketches and photos. you can follow me there as well :) I’m super active there because it is easier to take a picture and upload it. `

I also posts live streams in FB but most of them are in spanish. I’ll start making them in English as well. But first things first and that is I am moving to tumblr.

Cintiq update.

Turns out that my Cintiq 16″ pro was defective and had to return it.  Not just once but twice. I already uploaded a video on my youtube channel (subtitles soon) about what had happened and why I ended with the 22HD instead -plus a wacom colorimeter-.

I’ll be brief in case you run into this situation because I believe people should be AWARE of this situation. Wacom advertises that the new pro line has to be used/connected through an usb-c port OR a wacom link (a native adapter). They say using the wacom link will have the wacom run half its capacity (decent hd, however. Believe me, the screen looks amazing at half its capacity) . However the wacom link has a great impact on color. Color will hardly match (great disparity in colors). My Cintiq, for example, had a missing part of the color wheel. While the first one I had showed all colors desaturated, the second one didn’t have purples. All the purples were missing and were shown BLUE. Imagine that!

Overall, the 16″ pro has many problems. I experienced issues with touch and the cables. The screen would flicker every time I leaned on the screen to draw. The cables when plugged were loose. It was a mess.

Service in the country I live at at the moment is a mess. Nothing but unprofessional and I had the most horrible experience through Wacom LatAm. Thankfully my nightmare ended when wacom agreed to replace my faulty device with a cintiq 22HD.

This model has its issues as well (apparently after two months of use, spots tend to appear inside the LCD screen. Which  are covered by the warranty, but still. One does wonder about the quality control of this expensive devices. Are they really worth all the money they ask for?). However, and despite all the little things I’ve found here and there, the 22HD IS an improvement from the nightmare I was experiencing with the 16″. Reds are a bit orangy when compared to my 5K monitor though and the surface is nowhere near as the one I had with the Pro. But well, at least the color wheel is complete. This experience has turned out to be one of “You win some you lose some” kinda thing. In the end I did not want to loose money. I was very concerned about it since these are not cheap devices at all. 

Wacom USA offered me a good deal and I was and am thankful for it.  

I can’t lie. I miss my little Cintiq. It was the perfect size. Portable and with an amazing surface to draw on. But I have to say I also regret buying it. And not just because the device was so faulty. But because my whole experience was a sour one.  Wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. It’s that simple. I was happy drawing with my intous tablet. I don’t know what came into me when I decided I wanted a Cintiq. “Be careful what you wish for” I guess would be the moral here.  Well, now I’ve got a more expensive device.  Can’t lie. I’m pretty happy drawing right now. At last I have a device I can draw with! I’m crossing my fingers I won’t have extra issues with the cintiq pertaining to warranty (that, and I’m hoping I’ll get used to working on this huge screen). I don’t want to end up calling wacom again *cries in spanish*

And well, that’s it for the Cintiq rant/warning. You have been warned. 

In the meantime I leave you guys with a crappy photo of my brand new Cintiq. The new 22HD model is lighter and thinner :) Wish me luck!

Well, so I kinda thought this would be fun. My friends uploaded their answers on their fb pages, but I hate mine :P so anyway, here it is. 

1.- take a picture of your workspace.

I’m only showing part of my worksape. this for comic and traditional art. It’s a little messy because I’ve been working on the novel and studying for freaking finals. There would be my desktop computer on my right. I barely use it nowadays. 

1.- Show your pencilcase and what’s inside

Ok, so this is my pencil case. This is a brand new pencil case given by two dear friends. I actually drew the owls printed on the pencil case (I could be wrong though. in any case I work for the company who does the advertising for the brand. So there is a pretty good chance I drew that). I usually carry with me my watercolors, brushes, mechanical pencil, sharpener, lip gloss, a hair band, scissors, and a set of rules for perspective. 

1.- Show a thing you last drew, no matter how small or a doodle it is. 

Oc of a friend. He still needs a lot of work. :P But I got the nose right, bitches. 

4.- Lineart of coloring?

well, it depends how I want the final piece to look like. I do not ink, so I guess, color?

5.-Who/what inspires you?

Books most definitely (I’m an avid reader) and documentaries. Listening to people about their relationships it’s usually a free pool of ideas for new stories. 

As for artists. I would say… right now? I like @hamletmachine ‘s work. I recently discovered her artwork and even though it is yaoi, I really like it a lot. @beckycloonan, also. Other than these two incredible female artists, I like classical art. and I get frustrated for not painting like those artists and always always, end up with my animation style crap :(((

6.- Draw a same pic with your dominant and not dominant hand.

really? this is imposible. see for yourself.  I was laughing halfway through.

7.- Do you have any Ocs I could fill tumblr with a list of my Ocs, but I’m just gonna upload a photo of one of the latest created oc.  She has given me so many moments of true deep relaxation. I swear. Drawing her is a lot of fun. Her name is Eudoxia and here is a drawing that I did just two days ago. she’s dressed as a boy. 

8.- Do you Listen to music when you draw?

Usually, but it all depends. Sometimes I need silence to concentrate. Since I discovered spotify I play on the radio or listen to classical music. 

9.- Favorite things to draw?

Horses and pretty boys (see my instragram :P ). 

10.-Least favorite thing to draw?

mmmm…. Maybe cars? I like to draw spaceships, but cars… they are too boxy.

11.- Draw a pic of yourself like how you look just now.

It so happens that I’m wearing the same clothes when I drew this picture of myself. I am still struggling with the damned thumbnail. agh.

12.-Any weird artist behavior you admit doing?

mmm, I have to put on lipstick before I sit down to draw. My place has to be in  perfect order before I sit down to draw. Otherwise I go nuts.
