Some thoughts on houseki no kuni: mainly focused on Welegato/Cairngorm- Enma's toxic relationship and theories on what will happen to Phos

TW!!!: abusive relationship and phos wishing to die

So to start off, I've been checking in on HNKs page here and some of yall really like to argue and threaten others over fiction characters, like please stop and act civil these characters AREN'T REAL. it is not okay to threaten or insult others based on their opinion on fiction.

Okay, now to the story. As someone who has been in an abusive relationship, I see the same resemblance in Welegato's relationship with Enma. Enma acted like a "savior" to Welegato. and to all who say, "He wasn't manipulating Cairn" fail to notice the panels in which he states that he got Cairn away from phos on purpose to make phos a divine being to pray.

It is vague, but it is enough to realize Enma tricked Welegato and all the other gems to stay away from Phos. If you look at other parts of the story, you can see how Enma pushes himself onto Cairn, using their innocence and naivety to his advantage. Cairn/Welegato became a glorified trophy wife. In all honesty, I pity them more than I hate them because they never realized what was going on. They complied to whatever Enma said and wanted because they thought he truly loved them. For example, the scene in which he says Ghost is controlling him through Cairn's eyes. This made Cairn have a full-blown panic attack and shatter. What did Enma do to help them calm down? Nothing, he stood there, putting his plan into action. He did this because when He took out the quartz from Cairns eye, he knew Cairn would see him as someone who saved him from his long gone outer shell. Now to Ghost Quartz, in my opinion, was never abusive towards Cairn. they did the things they saw that were needed to stay in control of their body. Ghost may not have cared about Cairn inside them because they saw them as someone who got in the way of their life. Cairn was very violent, numerous times, we've seen them punch and break Phos out of anger. Even on the moon, they become cruel towards Phos and insult them numerous times. Enma just made Cairn/Welegato more spoiled and violent. That's the main issue. Bad relationships are hard to recognize until you see for yourself what you've become. In this case, Welegato never got to see how bad this was and stayed that way until they turned into nothingness. I'm very sad at this fact because Welegato had so much potential as a character. They have a good back story about identity and becoming something great, but it was washed down to a babied brat who turned their back on someone who needed them most. I think Welegatos' story is a story where the happy ending was never actually happy. They never got to realize who they could actually become, instead becoming controlled by another person.

With all that said and done let's move on to the next topic: Phos

Phos has said in the latest chapter (102, ps. spoilers ahead!!!) that they wish to eradicate their own existence. This can go either of two most likely ways. Phos fails to do this and learns to live with the human inside their inclusions or successes and goes into nothingness. There is a third was this can go, where all the lunarians are brought back or he finds out nothingness is an afterlife where all the others are. (knowing Ichikawa, this will NEVER happen :/). My next question is, how will this happen? Will Adamants brother be able to help Phos or will it not work? Until the next chapter we can only theorize.

not gonna lie have no idea how to use tumblr and this was kinda an impulse decision but here we go!!

WHG 19 - Day 7

The sun rises, and a booming announcement of a Feast calls throughout the arena. Needed supplies are at the Cornucopia. Who goes, and who will die getting what they need?

Most people are smart and don’t go! Lian ambushes Diggory, and Lyra ambushes Izzy, leading to the latters’ deaths. And Argent and Arthur fight over raw meat, and Argent turns out to be the winner! But Arthur just runs away. A pretty tame Feast, all things considered.

Wow! Death by tree today! Iris kills the biggest killer by falling on her, and Oliver just falls alone. Argent is careless and gets pricked, and some hunting and stalking take place!

We’re down to seven tributes left.

Two very different things happening! I wonder if the ghost stories were made even better by the screams of the fight? Ramona is able to get away, but Lyra isn’t, bringing Lian up to be the biggest killer in the arena!

Word search tag

Today’s quest brings us looking for tomorrow, communicate, comment, common, and recommend, thanks to the lovely @on-noon! ☕ today I went to a h u g e bookstore and nearly died of happiness right then and there, wandering around the cavernous shelves, and there was an a cappella group singing holiday songs--a lovely end to a busy morning! Here’s to hoping I can get some writing done later today :) 📚

Tomorrow:

“We need to get those papers back,” Velia spat. “Which means we need to work together, and well. No time for anything else. This train is here for twenty four hours and then it leaves again.”

Antonio nodded, turning to pace back and forth. “We can leave our belongings here, the room is mine for the next four days too. I have to check in with my contact—he’ll be expecting…Finton and myself. I’ll stall him. And then we’ve got the whole time—”

“I don’t have the whole time,” Fynn said quietly. “My family is arriving here tomorrow morning and I have to meet them.”

Communicate:

Velia bent and cradled her sore head on her hands.

She didn’t—she couldn’t communicate what was wrong. [Antonio had] shattered any sense of normalcy she’d had, and it was like waking up to a face full of ice water. Velia was not like everyone else, would never be like anyone else. Not unless she got those plans and disappeared for good.

Comment:

Paris straightened his collar, and marched off, determinedly not giving any indication that there might be someone following him. Velia crept after him, shooting dark looks at the important looking men who were noticing an interloper one by one, and raising their haughty brows to watch him make the trek down the hall.

The man who’d waved Crowley through looked the most displeased, when it became obvious that Paris was making straight for him. Velia glared daggers and dared him to make a comment.

He spoke, and to his credit, his voice only betrayed an ounce of annoyance. “What can I do for you?”

Common:

Antonio having a rather awful track record at ideas, Velia’s hope weren’t very buoyant as he led them through the city, first on another trolley car and then on foot, muttering repeatedly that they ought to be close by now, this was really the right part of the city. The right part of the city, was apparently a decently well off area with brightly lit streets and cafes and restaurants, and even a movie theater, which certainly weren’t commonplace.

Recommend:

“If you want to explain yourself, then do it.” [Antonio said.]

Velia didn’t want to, not without the others, not before the others were ready. “What I want is you to consider what your true motives are. And what your father’s might be. I recommend you figure it out before our meeting in three hours.”

Alright y’all

I just got done rewatching Over the Garden Wall and I NEED to hear some theories!!

I’ve watched it a number of times, and I always absolutely adore it, but, though I’m usually quite good with symbols and deeper meanings...every time I watch it I feel I only have the vaguest senses of the symbolism, especially in regards to individual episodes, and it drives me a little up the wall.

Then when I try to look up theories, while I still love them, they’re almost always about the plot as a whole, not individual episodes.

I really want to hear people’s deeper thoughts on what individual episodes, characters, and items mean.

I know full well the answer could just be that it’s not supposed to make sense/is nonsense, but I do feel and hope there’s a deeper meaning to them, and that’s what I’m personally here to discuss.

I also haven’t done too much research on tumblr yet, so my apologies if there are theories galore here I just haven’t seen!! And please do feel free to link me to them if so!!

So, a very brief summary of some theories from other people that I’ve heard/read (spoilers ahead!!):

The Unknown is purgatory/limbo, or a purgatory/limbo of sorts. Asides from them being between life and death, this is especially evidenced by images like the trees being like those who committed suicide in Dante’s Inferno (and they are indeed people who lose hope in OTGW), and the fact that they have to pay a coin each to get onto the ferry, like the river Styx. (I’m sure there’s many many more but those are the ones off the top of my head).

The Unknown is a place where all stories exist. At the end it becomes clear Beatrice made up a story that her family became bluebirds, not that it was their punishment is some purgatory. Much of the episodes can be thought of as the stories people made up (wanting animals to talk, the cat could have thought up Pottsfield, Quincey creating a beautiful ghost out of his loneliness, Fred wanting to talk...)

The seasons: it starts with autumn because autumn is a symbol of life waning, and then it becomes winter when they are truly starting to die.

The Beast is a symbol for despair. People turning into trees is very clearly a symbol for lost hope. The lantern is a blind sort of hope that can people going with despair ever at their shoulder reminding that person what would happen if that hope goes out. (And Wirt proves a number of times before the actual scene he’s not the kind of person to follow blind hope.)

“Over the Garden Wall” could refer to the fact that the graveyard is called “Eternal Garden” and they go over the wall. Or it could refer to the comics and how The Woodsman tells his daughter not to go past the wall and into the unknown (I’ve not read the comics, just heard people mention them in theories. Anyone have links to where I can read them online?)

Personally I’ve also always wondered if some things in individual episodes are more literal plays on things that really happen:

Like I can definitely hear old ladies saying “close the door, I’ll catch my death of cold!” And I’m curious if Adelaide is a more literal play on that (I suppose that could be a story she would be telling herself—she told herself she’d catch her death of cold and did).

Lorna and Auntie Whispers seem to be a play on the Puritans. They’re wearing Puritan garb, and “don’t do XYZ because it’ll cause you to become evil/an evil spirit to take you over” seem true-to-form for Puritans. It seems like a play on that where there’s actually an evil spirit. (And again, could be a story they told themselves)

But for the most part those don’t answer much of what happens in individual episodes:

Why does the big pottsfield pumpkin/aka the cat say everyone comes to pottsfield eventually a) if only a few people are there, and b) if the story theory is true rather then the purgatory one?

Just...what is up with everything in the school episode, especially with regards to symbolism?

What’s the symbolism of everyone having an occupation in the tavern?

Is there any symbolism in the Quincy episode or is it just a cute little story?

Why can Fred talk?

What’s the symbolism of Greg’s frog being able to sing in that one episode? Is it just a funny unexpected thing? And why are there no other humans on the ferry if the coin thing is common knowledge?

What does it mean (literally and symbolically) that Adelaide does what the beast commands? She’s not a lantern bearer nor a tree yet she’s his follower, what does that mean?

What’s up with the threads in her house? Is it an old lady knitting thing or a Moirai thing, or something else ?

If Wirt has such a strong crush on Sara why does he seem attracted to Lorna that way? Is Lorna a symbol for Sara herself?

What does it mean that Adelaide and Auntie Whispers are sisters? (And is there a significance to both of them being voiced by male voice actors?)

What the heck is up with Cloud City and how is the Cloud Queen able to grant wishes? The North Wind being the real north wind upon them is really the only thing about that episode that makes sense to me. (Though Greg being able to bottle it makes less sense)

What’s the significance of Greg stealing the rock?

Is there symbolism behind the frogs name changing every episode, and then landing on Jason Funderburker or is it just a funny little throughline?

How can the bell be inside the frog if the Unknown isn’t a physical place they were in, either way?

And for the love of all things holy what do the black turtles mean?! This drives me absolutely bonkers every time I watch it. Why does that dog become so feral and beastly when it eats one turtle (not to mention look like it’s dripping with Edelwood oil), as well as have the same eyes as the Beast, but Autie Whispers just looks uhh...weird when she eats a bunch, but remains in possession of her faculties?
