#b99 discourse

Sure, baking biscuits every single day for your boss is peak platonic behaviour. Sure, offering millions of pounds and finding a job for your ex-wife is peak platonic behaviour.
If Ted and Rebecca had been gorgeous twenty-somethings I bet the overall we-should-have-more-platonic-male/female-friendship-onscreen discourse would have not even emerged....

It's kinda funny that (in my opinion) B99 basically stopped being funny as soon as they made the switch to NBC. You either go out a beloved show that got cancelled before its time or live long enough to see yourself become the main target of copaganda discourse I guess.

But is astv on the same level of copaganda as b99, where do you draw the line
If I can be honest with you—really, sincerely honest with you—I care much more about How people are engaging with art than what art they are engaging with. I can try and get into the moralizing tango with you of what exactly makes something ethically okay to watch, but, truly, if someone is actively recognizing the qualities & ideologies of a piece of art, critically examining the impact of those qualities/ideologies, and making personal judgements on them based on their understanding, I am much happier than if people like everything I like and hate everything I hate. Critical discourse will always be more productive than labeling a piece of art as “morally irredeemable” or whatever.

Pride HCs! (all agents) 🌈
happy pride month :D here’s a fun little compilation of my personal headcanons for the agents/ if they were queer. obv all of the HCs are meant in good fun/ are my own thoughts so i’d love to hear y’alls thoughts or feedback :)
Word Count: 1500+
Warnings: slight NSFW mentions (not too graphic), including slight discussion of kinks
Astra
Astra probably doesn’t define herself purely within Western queer discourse
Despite this, she’s one of the best to talk about general queer crises as she’s very secure in herself— she’s always there with a grounding comment
She’s very open with her love
If she did identify with something, it’d probably be sapphic because she likes the ideology behind it
Breach
Breach figured out pretty early on that he was queer
Being an international criminal definitely gave him room to experiment, though not always in the safest ways
Like Astra, doesn’t really care about the specifics— he likes who he likes. Likewise, definitely down for a poly relationships
Part of the reason he was drawn to Raze when they met was not just because they were fellow engineers but because queer solidarity
Brimstone
Bear— need I say more?
This man definitely had a relationship/ pining with the guy in the photos in his office
The majority of the time he served, the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy was in place, and it weighed heavily on his mind as a gay man
If he has to act like he’s attracted to women, I want him to act like Captain Holt (B99)
Chamber
I saw the post about Chamber just being an “America-core Frenchman” and I agree so hard
Yes, he may put on airs of arrogance and superiority, but this man is the whiniest. Bottom. Ever.
He’s always so perfectly in control, in his manner and appearance, he enjoys letting go sometimes. Would enjoy being tied up and gun kink (enough said).
Also, trans (“Vincent” literally screams Victorian child wannabe)
Would use gold tattoos to decorate his top scars
Cypher
Omnisexual/ bisexual— I think the true tragedy of Cypher being forced to hide his identity is that he can’t have relationships/ hookups with everyone he finds attractive (which is, to be fair, a lot of people)
Though, assuming Nora is his wife and still alive, Cypher would remain faithful
He isn’t above flirting with other people though
Very slight voyeurism kink
Fade
Definitely a lesbian catgirl
Contrary to her abilities, I doubt she’s into BDSM/ heavy kink— she’s experienced so much horror in the eldritch realm, I imagine she just wants really caring sex/ relationships and isn’t as much into control play
Does really subtle things to celebrate pride, like rainbow studs or painting her nails rainbow
Jett
Jett would likely take a long time to come to terms with her sexuality, with her parents being a bit more conservative (let's go Asian parents!!)
Being at the VP was her first opportunity to really experiment and naturally, she latched onto the person she had grown closest with— Phoenix
My favorite HC is that Jett and Phoenix getting together was what made both of them realize that they prefer the other gender
I think Jett would like to be a bit more flexible with her own label, seeing herself as a sapphic
KAY/O
Kay/o gives demisexual vibes, as he would take a long time to process that he even liked someone and that it was possible with his programing
Given the theories about Kay/o being based off one of Brim’s old friends (and with all the imagery of them carrying each other) — perhaps romance could bloom there?
If he found he enjoyed sex, he would be incredibly disappointed he can’t give oral (like really just absolutely torn up about it)
Killjoy
Panromantic asexual— I think KJ is just someone who’s not that interested in sex, but romantically a lot of people
Obviously, I love KJ and Raze being girlfriends, and so I think Killjoy would be willing to have sex/ enjoys pleasuring Raze as she’s not sex-repulsed, just wouldn’t seek it out if her partner didn’t want it!
Would be interested in using different toys to see how Raze reacts
Neon
Bisexual queen— enjoys relationships with all people
Also trans, using she/they pronouns! It took them a long time to come to terms with being bisexual and trans, but they’re truly happy now, being able to do the work they love and be themself
Despite her electric fast abilities, Neon’s a hopeless romantic and enjoys taking relationships slow
A bit of a classic bisexual in that they’re constantly worrying that they’re faking it— what if they’re actually straight? Or just gay? All she knows is that she loves who she loves and tries to find solace in that
Would try to paint her surge protector rainbow
Omen
Omen is genderqueer (using all pronouns)— as their old life fades from their mind, I think they could find solace in gender expression and how they present. They’ve been called a lot of things— demon, a hollow shell of a man, but none of those feel quite right. Being genderqueer gives Omen a sense of control and for the first time, a label that feels right to them
Even though he can struggle with corporeality sometimes, he really enjoys giving hand jobs— it gives them something to focus their form on (though if Omen gets really excited, he might disappear into smoke a bit)
They are the ultimate malewife in the relationship
Phoenix
As said with the Jett HC, they were their realizations that they were queer
On Phoenix’s half, I see him as bisexual, with a leaning toward men (as for Jett, it just wasn’t the right fit— but it was being with her that made him realize he had a much larger potential for who he could love)
He would bug Yoru into showing him his drag fits and want to try it out
Raze
Lesbian all the way! Raze loves the deepness and explosivity of relationships with other women
Very respectful of KJ’s asexuality and they’ve had long talks about what each of their needs are
Doesn’t want to push KJ to have sex with her, but finds it amusing that KJ can make sex enjoyable for herself by making Raze the test subject
Not to get into explicit detail, but let’s just say Killjoy has definitely kept Raze up way longer than she expected
Reyna
While she may not identify as the term exactly, I think Reyna could be a graysexual lesbian, in the sense that she isn’t attracted to men, and doesn’t entirely enjoy sex
Headcanon that she faced a lot of pressure from being a conventionally attractive, authoritative latina— which pushed her into realizing she doesn’t enjoy male attention
If she is sexually attracted to someone, she’s into switching. She finds being top fun, but it’s a turn off if that’s expected of her all the time. Sometimes Reyna just wants to be taken care of :(
I think the Reyna/ Sage pairing is cute and could make for an interesting “coworkers to enemies to lovers” dynamic. They clearly have a lot of emotions toward each other, and their powers poetically contrast each other
She can be a bit of a sadist, especially if it’s a hookup, but tries to tone it down for Sage as their relationship develops
Sage
Didn’t think about sexuality for a long time, with pressures from her family and work
Following the first light incident and the awakening of her radiant abilities, Sage begins to finally self-reflect internally and honestly
Identifies primarily as gay/ queer. For all the nuance of Sage’s advice to others, she finds it enough to acknowledge that she loves differently and whom she loves is not who her parents expected of her
At the same time, Sage is the most likely to read up on queer discourse— she finds it interesting to see how others have grappled with the questions she has and how perspectives have changed over time within the LGBT+ community
Surprisingly really enjoys being a top and in control. It helps her relax and gives her a feeling of agency
In a pre-relationship to Reyna, perhaps Reyna was the first to realize her feelings, yet still acted aggressively. Sage took a long time to unwrap her identity and then eventually reached back out to Reyna, healing their past relationship
Skye
Queer and polyamorous— Skye loves to just go to a bar and meet others, have an adventure
While she doesn’t have particular kinks, she’s a very flexible and caring partner, would be happy to experiment with whatever
Most likely to settle on a farm with her partners, two dogs, and a myriad of other animals
Sova
The sort of person who always secretly knew he was gay. Also could see Sova as nonbinary, using they/he pronouns!
Didn’t really have to work through a lot of toxic masculinity to get to these realizations, as while sexuality/ gender aren’t really discussed where they’re from, it just wasn’t the focus
His hometown was so far north and cold that whoever brought in food was appreciated, regardless of gender. Survival and family was the largest emphasis
Enjoys wearing fur heeled boots as a treat to himself (also just when it’s cold enough to even warrant the boots they have from home)
They’re definitely either the gentlest top, or a power bottom
While enjoying some classic vanilla sex, is also into being tied up
Viper
Not asexual, but highly touch starved from isolating herself in her work
Bisexual, with a leaning toward women/ nonbinary folk. She’s had relationships with men but they just don’t satisfy her the same way (also she’s tired of being underestimated in science because she’s a woman)
Strong dom, takes care of her partners well (as meticulous as she is, not a detail goes out of place with aftercare). Also would be into breathplay
Yoru
I’m sorry, but he gives “you’re gay because you like men, I’m gay because I hate women, we are not the same” energy
With his interest in fashion and makeup, Yoru would enjoy drag, putting his own spin on it with Japanese culture— he’s more flattered than he’d like to admit when the other queens compliment his outfits and makeup
Honestly, he would struggle a lot with dismantling internalized homophobia and the toxic self expectations he has for himself— this would come out in inadvertently being an asshole on dates by accident
Yoru does get better over time, even supporting Omen while they were figuring out their gender crisis. The two of them have always bonded in their teleportation abilities and this solidifies their relationship further

Just saw some b99 discourse on Twitter and remembered the episode in which Jake Peralta fucking deported a man for the lulz and wow if that wasn't one of the shittiest, most bizarrely fascist pieces of television I have ever seen

For the people who defend the comment that Gina makes in episode 2x18 of Brooklyn 99, the one about "Asexual nerds", I wasn't ever upset that Gina said those words, I get that it's within her character to say something like that.
I'm upset because A) for a show that boasts representation and inclusion, even writing something like this and adding it into the show, was a bad move. They talk about POC issues, WOC issues, women's issues, LGBTQ+ issues, and so much more, but they still somehow have the attitude that a joke like that was okay?
And B) for the asexual people who are basically saying, "Well, I'm asexual and I wasn't offended." That's just like saying, "Well I'm a woman and nothing a man has ever said to me was creepy." Or Yt people saying, "Well I've walked down the street and the police have never profiled me." Like, just because it didn't happen to you, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Just because you're a part of the community and you aren't offended, doesn't mean other asexual people aren't offended.
Don't get me wrong, I love this show, and still do to this day, but the fact that that comment was blown over like it was nothing, and the fact that there are Ace community members that have a toxic stance on this, made me want to say something.
- Sincerely, an Asexual

Ok ok ok I know pretty much all of what I’m about to say has been said a bunch, but I need to say this and get this out (and to any poc reading this if I slip up in my assessments of this issue I’m so so sorry, obviously you can call me tf out) – there are two aspects/layers of this.
First of all, there’s the obvious fact that we need to acknowledge: b99 is a fictional show set in a fictional universe and it in no way reflects real life cops. If you’ve let it affect your real life perception of cops, you need to seriously think about the way you consume media.
There’s that separation – but then there’s the second issue. Even though it’s not real, it does affect real life. There are definitely parts of the show that promote the “a few bad apples” narrative and other toxic narratives – the way they arrest people without evidence and are presented as being in the right, the way defence attorneys are demonised, the way the bad cops are out of the precinct, separated from our main good guy cops.
As a fandom, we should acknowledge these issues and understand that it’s not right. And tbh, we can do that whilst still loving the show – and if we truly do love it we should want to look at the ways it could be better. That doesn’t necessarily mean picking out and calling out every single slip up (although obviously you have a right to do that if you want to). It just means thinking a little more, rather than promoting a blanket idea that b99 is this perfect, unproblematic show that can never do any wrong.

Will you feel comfortable watching B99 with the BLM and anti-police thing going on? I'm trying to feel okay about the show but I just can't :(
i’ve thought a lot about it and i’m super biased because it’s my favourite show and i don’t think anything would stop me from watching it but yes of course i am.
first of all, as long as you engage critically with the show and recognise that it isn’t an accurate portrayal of the real world then its okay to watch it. news flash - sometimes its okay to watch a show that isn’t totally realistic, know and acknowledge that this is the case, and then switch off your brain and just enjoy it!! do we really believe that all crime stops on halloween for their heists? no, but we go along with it anyway.
which next point - its fictional. i don’t know when we started looking to a fictional show to be a moral compass but that’s wrong. of course there are bits that are uncomfortable and wrong (hello, gintars) but sometimes things can be just enjoyed as a form of escapism because if it were realistic then you may as well watch the news.
and the last thing i’ve come to realise is that every tv show positions its main characters as heroes. parks and rec makes you root for a bureaucrat, glee glorified a sociopathic bully in all the characters santana lopez, and like even gossip girl started with chuck bass sexually assaulting a girl, and yet we’re positioned to root for them. thats just what fiction does. as long as you know this is the case and critically engage then thats the main thing.

Hey please don’t feel bad about posting b99 content. If you work hard on something, esp if it’s for Pride, post it. Watching a show about fictional cops doesn’t make you less of an ally. The fictional characters you love doesn’t take away from your support for Black people. I know your hearts in the right place but concern over edits is the lowest priority. Don’t be ashamed of your edits as long as your activism is there.
Hey anon idk if you’re sending this to everyone or if you mixed me up with someone else. I haven’t made an edit since like February because I’m a very lazy person lmao. Just wanted to let you know in case you sent your message to the wrong person.
Regardless of that, I agree with your sentiment. I don’t agree with people shaming creators for posting b99 pride gifsets when that is such a huge and important part of the show. We do this every year and we should be proud that the show we love has representation like that. That being said, I also understand that a lot of people don’t want to see gifs of the show right now and there’s a time and place for everything. I really don’t have a solution for this and what we should and shouldn’t do as fans of the show. In all honesty, I kinda hate how so many people, me included, have spent so much energy on debating this topic. I know that fandom is such a big part of our lives but it honestly seems so unimportant at this moment. Obviously I believe that this discourse needs to be discussed. I’m also super glad that this fandom for the most part has acknowledged that this show is indeed cop propaganda and has delved into what that means and how that can affect the real world. We HAVE to discuss it. We HAVE to look at the media we consume with a critical eye so that we can learn from it. And by learning from it, we can make better and more educated choices of what we want to support and how we want to support it. We have to take this knowledge and reflect on it because what is the point if we don’t. That being said, seeing all the debate on whether or not the show should be cancelled, or whether people are gonna keep watching the show, or whether the cast/writers should do something, or whether b99 fans should be shamed for liking something problematic just feels like noise right now. No one has the correct answers to any of this. The shows not even on right now. We don’t even know when they can start production for season 8. I believe in the importance of discourse and discussion, now more than ever, but I just really hope everyone’s doing their part in this movement and not just worrying about a tv show because believe me, I’m struggling right now with that too.

More b99 discourse I guess
One of the reasons I’ve been calling out b99 more than other shows is because they put in effort to call stuff out. Captain Holt will often comment about his past in the NYPD and how he was mistreated by fellow police officers. They’ve done the Very Special Episodes about racial profiling, sexual harassment etc. Which means they’ve put in the work in starting important discussions. But it also means they have more of a responsibility to talk about this than others.
A show that problematises racial profiling can’t turn around and have a throwaway line about celebrating high arrest numbers
A show that problematises sexual harassment in the work place should also talk about how the 23 out of 25 largest police departments (NYPD included) have no policies regarding sexual misconduct towards the public
A show that features and celebrates LGB characters and talks about the homophobic nature of the police in the past must also address the modern homophobia in the police and that police continue to be a source of brutality and terror for the LGBTQ community
To me the point isn’t to stop watching the show, there’s many cop shows out there and there will be many more. But critically engaging with B99 is important and I feel like saying “well at least b99 talks about social issues” is a failure in realising that that’s a huge part of the problem

Brooklyn 99 just completely fucked up Amy's character, and I'm so angry about it. Amy would NEVER have behaved the way she did in Casecation.
Like... threatening to leave your partner for not immediately wanting to commit to a major life decision, blackmailing/manipulating your partner in order to get what you want...
If I knew someone whose spouse did that to them I would tell them to get to a marriage counselor immediately. (That's a lie, I'd tell them to get a divorce) It was so gross and I CANNOT believe they would do that to Amy's character.

A Hot Take on Brooklyn Nine-Nine
okay so
There has been a lot of Discourse, with the cancellation and then the rescue of this lovely lil’ show, about whether it’s all Ideologically Acceptable to root for a show about cops. With a big argument being that B99 subscribes to the “not all cops are bad, it’s just a few rotten apples” argument, which, yeah, indeed, is Bad, for I hope pretty self-evident reasons
Thing is, I really don’t think that’s accurate. Yes, the show does have positive characters that are cops - but the point feels much less “not all cops”, and more “all cops, just not these ones”. And there’s a big difference there.
I mean, look at the five series and 100+ episodes of the show. Outside of the main squad, how many positive figures have you seen in the police force ...? There was the lady running for captain in the latest batch of episodes, true - who was stopped at every turn by the system. I guess you had that big name detective at the end of series 2, but even him seemed more interested in getting into Amy’s pants and being a walking Cool Stereotype.
Literally every other figure of authority in the show is rotten. Wuntch? Obviously. The commissioner is obsessed by fame and wants to get credit for catching serial killers more than anything (cf. “The Oolong Slayer”). Prisons are petty hellholes; other captains are nuisances, when they’re not in the pocket of the mafia. The elite taskforce charged to suppress gangs robs banks and frames innocents. Good cops like Holt face discrimination and harassement; all the characters, in some form or another, end up in conflict with the larger hierarchy at some point.
B99′s point isn’t that cops are nice people, deep down. It’s that it’s worth it to strive for good in a fucked system. I mean sure, it doesn’t exist in isolation, and in a world that’s filled to the brim with shows about Heroic Cops, its very existence and aesthetics can sort of feed this narrative. But it’s a lot smarter, and a lot better than that.

This probably has already been said
But I’m not known for being original, so here it goes.
The fact that Jake Peralta is comfortable talking about males and appreciating them without fear is not only important because it implies that he is bisexual (that, in my opinion he is, but that’s another post) but is also important because it opens the possibility that men can appreciate other men and not be ashamed of it.
In general girls are allowed to comment on others girls bodies without fear, you could say that it’s even normal. But men are only allowed to talk about female bodies (and the more brute and rude the comment, the better).
So the fact that Jake is constantly dropping comments on how he sees and appreciates men’s bodies opens up a new world of opportunities. Men shouldn’t be ashamed of observing other men.
So from the comfort of my kitchen chair I personally wanna thank Jake Peralta for being such an amazing human being.
