Anime Recs Pt 3

Hello hello! I’ve been sick on and off this month and had a blast revisiting my fave anime for this rec series. Following the queer friendly list and the sports anime list, I finally bring a selection of BL (boys love) titles. Most are Japanese 🇯🇵 except for Mignon 🇰🇷 and Tian Guan Ci Fu 🇨🇳 I’m not gonna lie, there’s a fair amount of adult themes and hardcore angst here, but you’ll also find sweet romance and a couple coming-of-age stories. One of my favorites from this list - Ai No Kusabi - is an old classic (I recommend the 1992 OVA series over the 2012 remake) and the quality is not the best, but all other shows are pretty recent and can be found online or on Crunchyroll. I initially planned for this to be my third and final rec list, but I got a few additional recs in the action/fantasy genre for a potential new list, if anyone’s interested? Stay tuned!

1. Ai no Kusabi (dystopian, tragedy)

Summary: This futuristic tale is set in a world ruled by a super computer Jupiter, where its cyborg creations, the Elites, rule over the human populace. Iason Mink, a high-class "Blondy" elite from the capital runs into Riki, a "Mongrel" from the slums, and makes him his "Pet". As Riki learns of the dangers Iason faces by keeping him, he finds himself developing feelings for his master.

2. Banana Fish (mafia, tragedy)

Summary: Set primarily in New York City in the 1980s, the series follows street gang leader Ash Lynx as he uncovers a criminal conspiracy involving "banana fish", a mysterious drug that brainwashes its users. In the course of his investigation he encounters Eiji Okumura, a Japanese photographer's assistant with whom he forms a close bond.

3. Doukyuusei (movie - school, romance)

Summary: Rihito Sajo, an honor student with a perfect score on the entrance exam and Hikaru Kusakabe, in a band and popular among girls, would have never crossed paths. Until one day they started talking at the practice for their school’s upcoming chorus festival.

4. Given (school, music)

Summary: High schooler Ritsuka Uenoyama is the guitarist for a band composed of himself, bassist Haruki Nakayama, and drummer Akihiko Kaji. He becomes a reluctant guitar teacher to Mafuyu Satō, a shy classmate, after repairing the broken strings on Mafuyu's Gibson ES-330. See also: Given movie.

5. Mignon (short series - vampire romance + the hottest smut you’ll see today!!!!🥵)

Summary: Centered on BL Vampire themes, the story portrays Mignon, an underground fighter in love with his doctor, who is coincidentally a vampire. The doctor's revelation triggers complications as their relationship unfolds.

6. Saezuru Tori Wa Habatakanai | Twittering Birds Never Fly (movie - mafia, drama)

Summary: The sexually masochistic yakuza boss, Yashiro, isn't the type to warm up to others easily. But when Chikara Doumeki, his newly hired bodyguard, catches his interest, he reconsiders his "hands-off" policy with subordinates. See also the side story: Don’t Stay Gold.

7. Sasaki and Miyano (school, romance)

Summary: Shy and easily flustered Miyano harbors an embarrassing secret - he is a "fudanshi", a boy who likes boys' love manga. Intrigued, the clueless delinquent Sasaki requests to borrow one, marking a shift in their strange dynamic.

8. Tiān Guān Cì Fú | Heaven’s Official Blessing (romance)

Summary: Crown Prince Xie Lian ascends to the heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules the ghosts and terrifies the heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

9. Umibe No Étranger (movie - romance)

Summary: On an island off the coast of Okinawa, two young men meet on a beach. Shun Hashimoto is gay and aspires to be a novelist. He is interested in Mio Chibana, a somber high school student, and starts to flirt with him. Day by day, the two of them grow closer, but then, suddenly, Mio decides to leave the island.

10. Yuri!!! On ICE (sports, romance)

Summary: Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki faces a crushing defeat during the Grand Prix finals and heads home, unsure of whether or not he wishes to continue his skating career. After a video of Yuri mimicking Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov's routine goes viral, Victor decided to become Yuri's coach, much to the dismay of his coach, his fans, and his fellow Russian skater Yuri Plisetsky.

Puzzle is Kiku's Zootopia OC. He is a Holland Lop Red fox hybrid. (in Kiku's personal Zootooia AU/headcanon hybrids are possible but not common and some mammals look down on them, especially predator/prey hybrids. And they aren't well known because they tend to keep to themselves.)

He's queer (ftm/nonbinary, aroacespec, and in his words "It's fuckin Complicated".)

He's multiply disabled, deafblind(myopia, CVI, mid-low range hearing loss, and capd) nonverbal/nonspeaking autistic, a full time AAC and mobility aid user (white cane, AFOs, forearm crutches, rollator, and wheelchair/stroller.) and has PTSD

He is a DJ/EDM producer (heavy focus on House (especially Big Room House) and Dubstep and graphic artist (traditional and digital).

He has Cerebral Palsy, EDS, pots, and other physical disabilities.

He has apraxia/dyspraxia, is unreliably and minimally speaking, and communicates using his communication device (the zootopian equivalent of an Accent), several ipads, his phone, letterboards, core boards, communication cards, picture cards, tactile symbols, sign language, and noises and gestures. He's also suprisingly vocal for a rabbit. (rabbits IRL don't make a whole lot of noises, mostly squeals and screams when greatly distressed, hind paw thumps to warn of danger, and tooth purring (they grind their back teeth together when content, in a sound that resembles other mammals purrs) and one of the biggest tells he has that he isn't Just a rabbit is all the noises he makes.

Physically he's a pretty even mix of rabbit and fox, although he's a bit big by rabbit standards for a holland lop he's much smaller than most red foxes. He has both bunny and fox teeth, his muzzle is longer than most bunnies but shorter than most foxes and he has a bunny like nose. His hind legs and paws are shaped more like a fox but he can suprisingly still hop like a bunny and he's also suprisingly fast running on all four paws. Although running without his AFOs isn't the best idea because of his unstable joints (CP and EDS) and tight leg muscles. He can move without his mobility aids but it results in pain that gets worse the longer he goes not using them.

He also likes to dance and sing but doesn't do so professionally, because he thinks he isn't very good at it.

He is an omnivore and eats meat. But he also has arfid so his diet is pretty restricted (he eats a lot of processed chicken, like chicken nuggets and tenders, fish, and certain veggies (carrots, broccoli, squash) and fruits (strawberries, bananas and watermelon).

His favorite colors are pink and purple.

He loves dressing up and looking pretty and wears a lot of crop tops. Although he usually wears baggy cargo pants that hide his AFOs.

He's very sascastic and can come off as rude to mammals he doesn't know but he's actually just guarded and trying his best to pass as male (he didn't pass as well when he was younger, before his top surgery. He still has his dewlap, although it's not very prominent and he just looks really fluffy.) He has large floppy bunny ears and a very fluffy fox tail. Although unlike some lops, he can stand his ears straight up or airplane them.

Banana Joe = Monkey D. Luffy (both are goofballs who aren't the sharpest tool in the shed, and fit with Ocho/Zoro and Tobias/Sanji as a trio, which we see little snippets of in the Gumball episodes like "The Moustache" "The Worst' and "The Pact")

Ocho = Roronoa Zoro (both are violent and edgy, and are humorously shipped with Tobias/Sanji by their respective fan-bases)

Tobias = Sanji ( both fancy themselves "ladies men" but never get anywhere with it; they primarily simp for Masami/Nami also, and shipped with Zoro/Ocho quite often as already stated; also both Tobias and Sanji tend to be the butt of the jokes)

Masami = Nami (both are materialistic, Masami comes from a wealthy family, and Nami loves money; they have atmokinetic abilities, and are scary when angry)

Clayton = Usopp (both have a habit of lying, and it's attributed to their insecurities and low self-esteem)

Anton = Tony Tony Chopper (admittedly the similarities are kind of scarce, but Anton has a cloning ability which is somewhat like a devil fruit, and both are susceptible to being in large bodies of water for too long on account of being a devil-fruit user, and Anton is a literal piece of bread and becomes soggy when left in the water for too long, also it fits aesthetically as their both small, brown little guys with high-pitched voices and both can occasionally be a little gullible and ditzy)

Clare = Nico Robin (both of them are gloomy and reserved, that's about it)

Bobert = Franky (not much to say in terms of personality, but both are pretty daffy; then there's the more obvious similarity in that Bobert is a robot, and Franky is a cyborg, those two things go hand in hand for obvious reasons)

Razor = Brook (They're both the undead, and have skull-faces; Brook is a musician and Razor is in a band called "Soldiers of Pain")

Rocky = Jinbei (Admittedly, I know that you could make a case for Darwin being Jinbei given that Darwin is a goldfish, and Jinbei is a fish-man, but Darwin is too cutesy for somebody like Jinbei; Rocky & Jinbei are like big brother/mentor figures to the Students and the Straw Hats; (yes I know Brook is technically older than Jinbei, but Jinbei’s the most mature) Also, Jinbei is the school’s bus driver, while Jinbei is the Thousand Sunny’s helmsman; Rocky is often seen hanging out around the school’s pool, has cosplayed as Darwin in “The Genius” and this is just speculation, but Rocky has similar mannerisms to that of a stereotypical surfer, so perhaps he does a little bit of surfing as a hobby? granted, Jinbei doesn’t act like a stereotypical “surfer” the point is I’m trying to describe how Rocky could be loosely associated with water for the sake of finding more connections between him and Jinbei)

Penny = Nefertari Vivi (They’re both just sweet and kind girls. nothing more, nothing less; also Penny has a pet spider Mr. Cuddles, who you could say he’s like Karoo)

Fuck me, so I got into Stardew mods, right? On this my second modded run, I add LoveofCooking and pretty much the whole PPJA suite. Amongst others, but let’s focus here

BECAUSE I ENJOY COMPLETIONISM, I want to get Perfection from Qi, right? Requiring all shipped things, all cooked things, etc

There’s shit you CAN’T GET in the game but are REQUIRED for Perfection. When I say “can’t get” I mean either the recipe is broken, there ISN’T a recipe, or there isn’t a recipe AND you can’t buy the fucking thing. I don’t code yet, but I can adequately poke shit until it works, so I went into the various .jsons to figure it the fuck out. SUCCESSFULLY, much to my satisfaction

Buuuuuuut at least for the PPJA stuff, there’s no section I can find anywhere to post my solutions for whomever else is losing their mind? Maybe there’s a discord I’m ignoring, but on Nexus the mod authors took away the posts/bugs tabs, and I didn’t see any comment sections on any of the, like, five or eight semi-defunct wikis and githubs and everything. Love the PPJA stuff, it’s a massive endeavor. Probably stripped out the interaction options because they have enough to do, but it definitely leaves the users in a “figure it out or get fucked” situation

So anyway here’s some of my fuckin notes, added as I find and figure them out

”Broken” = recipe / producer rules exist in .json, but can’t be used in-game (for machines, sometimes because of duplicate InputIdentifiers)

hi sorry if this is overstepping but i really needed to tell you how much i appreciate that response you just posted (to that ask about if death was a better option for ash). i, like you, am nineteen and have some sexual trauma that really haunts me, and banana fish really kicked me up the ass and made me acknowledge a lot of it. i debate on whether it was a good thing or not, because it was definitely at a time when i wasnt ready but im also the kind of person who needs a tough shove in the right direction otherwise i simply would Never Address Anything, but the fact remains the same that coming into the fandom and seeing people so shamelessly debate trauma i very much saw myself in, asking things like 'is it even worth living after experiencing that?' when i was sat there relating to it - it wasn't pleasant. the fandom has a habit of doing that in what is just casual discussions between users but to victims of sexual trauma is so triggering, because like you said they're talking from a place of privilege (and im so glad you worded it that way because i never thought of that!). like discussions on if ash will ever enjoy simply being touched again or if he's 'ruined forever' etc etc, it's all so inadvertently insensitive and it's so nice to just find people who feel as i do, even if it is awful that we even feel like that at all. like actually we aren't ruined or bad or dirty and we do deserve the time and energy of a happy ending instead of a cheap death in the last ten minutes. so just yeah. thank you so so much for being brave enough to share your experience and putting it all in such a kind way. i hope things get better for you and im so proud of the progress you've made so far.

There is such a privilege in viewing media like banana fish as something purely fictional. The fandom definitely has a habit of taking real life experiences and turning them into angst fueled or hurt comfort scenarios—seeing Ash as something beautifully tragic and a romantically star-crossed queer—rather just some teenager who experienced a nightmarish amount of pain and who deserves to spend the rest of his life healing. Just like us. We arent ruined or incapable of intimacy or broken, we are just people. We can have happy lives, and we will.

Thank you for this ask my sweet love! Im proud of you too. Healing from this is just as difficult as it is possible (both are guaranteed but worth it)

story.

Chelsea was raised in what was originally an almost annoyingly loving home. Her parents had strict standards for her, but unlike many of her friends seemed to shower her with attention and adoration. Her whole world shifted at age eleven when her parents divorced and her mother remarried only two months later. Chelsea chose to stay with her father, and easily fell for his attempts to alienate her from her mother. 

At Hogwarts, she initially struggled with all of her studies except Herbology where she excelled. She was diagnosed with ADHD but her father wouldn’t medicate her because “the King family can’t show weaknesses”, because of this Chelsea developed anxiety, a fear of failure, and became obsessive with creating multiple series of routines, steps, spells, alarms, and anything else she could think of to keep herself on track, essentially boobytrapping her way into succeeding (she still does this but they are hidden very well now. She considers it one of her best kept secrets.) 

She maintained mild popularity in school, which fueled her ever growing ego and as soon as she was able she followed her fathers footsteps and joined the Death Eaters. While she doesn’t necessarily believe that all people with muggle lineage are lesser, she firmly believes those who can yield magic are better than those who aren’t. 

After graduating school, her mother attempted to contact her and was met with a brick wall. Chelsea, realizing her mother wanted to be apart of her life, instead cut her off completely and blocked her everywhere she could. She doesn’t flaunt it, but she is still very emotionally attached to her father and considers him her only family now that her grandmother who she was also close to passed. She often says she hopes to have a happy, pure-blood marriage like her parents once had, but adds that she won’t fuck it up like her mom. 

Once out of school, Chelsea’s love for herbology turned sinister in many ways as she started becoming fascinated not only with plants to help in her bakery but in toxic, poisonous, and otherwise dangerous plants. She cultivates them in her greenhouse and garden areas in case the DE should ever need them. 

Despite the fact that she’s an adult and tries her best to come off as completely independent, most of her lifestyle is funded by her father and she still makes most of the important decisions in her life in an effort to make him proud, however she has been working on truly living for herself. This has backfired and instead she makes a lot of reckless and impulsive decisions without very much thought. None of these decisions have had any horrible outcomes yet, so she’s unlikely to stop until they do.
