Barbie's Pride Ward(a)robe, Part Five

2023 is all about the cultural phenomenon that is Barbie, but as much as I consider myself a collector, I've never been into pink. Nor am I excited by many of her fashions. As there is one colour palette I'm passionate about, for @aggressivelyarospec's Aggressively Arospectacular I'm posting my biggest crafting project yet: clothes and accessories for dolls who want to make fashion all about our aromantic pride.

The goal: a collection of mix and match pieces so my dolls can glory in a variety of aro-themed outfits.

The result: a seven-part post series detailing my misadventures in hand-sewing a 65-piece summer ward(a)robe.

Today's post shows off a selection of T-shirts in aromantic colours and the garments I used as a pattern base ... as well as discussing materials, cross-stitching on knit fabrics and my embroidery patterns.

i know it was a good selfless thing at the time to donate my childhood toys, a decision i made as a teenager. but as an adult now, i regret doing that. i miss playing with my toys and i still search for people selling some of the ones i had, but they're either way too expensive or were already sold.

i don’t expect a ton of success with this post but i was trying these random doll clothes i had in a bag on my barbie looks doll to see what fit and decided now would be a good a time as any to ask for identification help!!

primarily for the white dress she’s modeling in the first photos, it’s very lovely, although needs washed and some repairs in the back! but i’m also curious about the other clothes, and then i decided to empty my little bin of miscellaneous doll accessories to see if any of them could be identified!! i would guess it’s vastly barbie but there could be other things lol

other notes are:

• i thought the hibiscus print clothes could potentially go to a hannah montana doll i thought i had as a kid but i couldn’t find a similar one so i’m not sure

• i think i took the purple dress off a doll i found a long time ago with a broken leg who i also didn’t recognize, but she was very pretty and i remember wanting to make her a prosthetic so she’s still around if it’s the correct doll. she was paler than your average barbie i believe and blonder as well

• i have a few other accessories that i believe match the little golden hairclip! they just are somewhere else because i remember thinking they were cute, i believe they were a very tiny brush and a handheld mirror

• as far as shoes i figure they could go to a lot of things if the molds are reused especially barbie shoes but i’m curious regardless! especially about the pairs and the darker pink boot

• it says malaysia along the edge of the sole but that’s all i know

• there’s a few britney spears things i would assume go to a britney doll so i clumped them together but that’s not my forte and i know very little about them/her so i included them anyways!

thank you in advance if anyone can offer any help!! i probably have some more things around but this is all i’ve got rn, and i definitely have some actual barbie’s that need identified too but i would have to pull them out lol

despite how shitty that meeting was this morning, the rest of my day was surprisingly nice actually

I had a good cry about it, then we went to a nearby town and walked around for a few hours. I bought a Barbie doll (it was on sale, there was only one model and it was one I'd been looking at online for a while, so 🤷) and pink yarn that I want to knit a hat with.

then we went to a thrift store - we got two board games, a pretty red glass vase (for my collection of colourful glass things lol) and a salt lamp (I've been looking for one for a while), all for 7€.

when we came home I had a nap. I felt so much better after that. and now we just watched Jaws - I had never seen it before and oh my god I loved it so much?! I had no expectations because it doesn't sound like something I would like, honestly. plus, our music teacher once showed us some scenes from old horror movies/thrillers that are famous for their scores. that was in 5th or 6th grade so we were like 11. that kind of made me want to never watch those movies for a long long time :') (though I'm pretty sure I've seen all of them now)

#I guess I like barbies now?#I kinda wanted to get one for years but felt like that would be silly #but then we saw the barbie movie and sadly it seems to have been very effective #but I mean. I wasn't allowed to play with barbies when I was little. I really wanted to. and eventually I got a couple as presents from #other people (so my mother couldn't say no).#but I didn't get to choose any of them. and I generally never got to choose any toys #and now I'm an adult and I can buy barbies if I want :) and pretty clothes for them and silly accessories and tbh I really love it #anyway!#that was a very long way of saying I feel better 😄#personal #posts about my thesis

In this series I discuss making patterns from pre-existing doll clothes, hand-sewing techniques and many acts of repurposing human-sized clothes, jewellery and accessories. Aside from a sheet of water-soluble canvas (for cross-stitching motifs onto doll T-shirts), I've avoided specialised or difficult-to-source materials. All the findings, beads, sliders, hooks and snaps mentioned can be purchased cheaply from chain craft, dollar/discount and department stores. Anyone looking to make more than a couple of pieces, however, will need to gather a variety of oddments prior to crafting. This absurd project is best for folks already possessing--or happy to add to--a sewing supply stash!

Today's post focuses on doll bodies and sizing, doll clothing as a base for your own patterns, and the scarcity of green knit fabric.
