A/n: Ask and you shall receive! I have so many personal headcannons and I'm so excited to share it with you all. Maybe I'll incorporate some of these into oneshots one day. Who knows? But I'm really in the mood for Young!Daryl these days, so send in some requests for him if y'all wanna see more!

★ Your ages aren't specified, but I headcannon that y'all are 17-almost 18 in this au.

★ As mentioned in Through The Good Times And The Bad, you moved to the trailer park when you were twelve. However, Daryl definitely didn't approach you first. You had to go up to him and start talking to him.

★ You were exploring the woods behind the trailer park when you stumbled upon a river. There you met Daryl, and since he was the only kid there who was your age, you wanted to strike up a friendship, although it was difficult.

★ I also feel like Daryl definitely didn't talk during the first few weeks when you went up to him. With Merle and his father constantly ruining his self-esteem, he was sure that you would recognise what a screw up he was and head for the hills.

★ However, when a month passed with you showing up at the river and keeping him company, he found himself looking forward to seeing you, and with that knowledge, he slowly started warming up to you.

★ The first time he ever spoke a word to you was when you accidentally slipped on a wet rock and fell into the river. He snorted a laugh at your predicament, and couldn't resist the urge to tease you.

★ “Careful. Heard the rocks in the river ain't exactly dry.”

★ You had laughed at him and splashed some water at him, and that was the start of your friendship.

★ Although you quickly became close friends, it took almost two years for him to start opening up about his father.

★ His father's beatings had started to become way worse and he started leaving more visible marks, resulting in questioning glances from you, though you never pressed for answers. That made him feel comfortable enough to gradually start opening up to you.

★ By the time you were both 15, you knew all about his father, Daryl's past with his mother committing suicide and his asshole of a brother.

★ This is definitely the "she fell first, he fell harder" trope.

★ You had started crushing on him when you were 14. However, Daryl only started acknowledging his own feelings for you when he was 16 and you had saved up to get him a gift for his birthday.

★ His feelings had smacked him right in the face, and the rest is history.

★ Moving away from you and Daryl for now, it's pretty clear that your mom is yours and Daryl's number one shipper.

★ She knows about Daryl's abuse, but not to the extent that you do. She only knows the "basics", so to speak.

★ She's offered to talk to social services for him, but Daryl had refused, so she offered for him to stay over whenever he needed to.

★ She totally already sees Daryl as her son-in-law. She knows for a fact that you and Daryl are meant to be together, even if you're only teenagers.

★ This might only be me, but I headcannon that your mom in this was a teen mom—she got pregnant during her senior year in highschool.

★ She's implied to be a single mom, so the dad split when he found out she was pregnant.

★ She lived with her parents to raise you until you were 6. Her parents eventually kicked the two of you out and you've been in and out of multiple crappy apartments before settling on the trailer park.

★ She's the type of mom who tries to give you the freedom you desire while still being strict. Hence the "if anything happens, be sure to use protection" jokes. She knows she can't stop you from doing that, but she can ensure that you don't make her mistakes.

★ She definitely "secretly" buys condoms for you and Daryl.

★ During the first few months of your relationship, she noticed that the box remained untouched. Knowing Daryl's shyness, she knew that it wasn't because you and him were having unprotected sex. The two of you weren't like that.

★ When she noticed after a couple of months that there was finally one gone, she couldn't help the teasing she bestowed on you when Daryl went home.

★ She has met his father a number of times. The man has hit on her more times than one, completely unaware that she knew his son. However, since she was aware of the abuse, she's told him to "fuck off" every time.

Okay I kinda get being dissapointed at how they rushed the Sov sibling reconcilliation with just one conversation after drawing it out for months but y'all...this really isn't the end-all-be-all of Crow's character arc, nor is it necessarily out of line for him. His biggest weakness is that he's a bleeding heart who lets people walk all over him- remember how he decided not to get revenge on Spider despite Spider very literally keeping him as a slave? Or how he killed a psion because he was too empathetic to a hive guardian? As much as I love him, and as much as his love is a terrifying force when weilded correctly, he's soft and weak. He always has been. He was bound to forgive Mara eventually, esp. since they have a psychic twin bond going on.

I think y'all are also forgetting the fact that Mara has had quite a bit of character development over the past year or so and has very notably been more open about her emotions and better about keeping herself out of Crow's life- because she got bitchslapped by the reality of what she'd done to him in Season of the Lost and then got shaken to the core by her confrontation with the Witness in Witch Queen. She hasn't been 'defanged', she realized that the way she was acting qualified her to be a Disciple (aka the worst of the worst, the enemy she'd been hellbent on fighting this whole time) and that in tandem with Crow's rejection upset her deeply enough for her to change her behavior, which hasn't been as apparent until now. Idk how y'all can forgive how Uldren Sov slaughtered hundreds of Awoken citizens and wreaked havoc on the Reef but is changed as Crow without also acknowledging the fact that Mara herself changed as well. It's not as dramatic of a difference because it happened more gradually and without intervention from a Taken Ahamkara and the Traveller, but its still there and is the most apparent its ever been right now. It wouldn't surprise me if the reason why Crow is forgiving her now- apart from the fact that he's a softie and discounting potential Riven bullshit- is because she's proven she's changed by both keeping her distance and being more emotionally open with him, as well as open about how she knows she fucked up. That's the second thing Uldren wanted other than her approval, after all.

Also, it's been like, 2 years of Crow being pissed at Mara and avoiding her, so them starting to make up now is kinda necessary even if it feels a bit rushed. I personally would have loved to see more snark and nettling from Crow's end, bc I love conflict and sibling angst, but it really isn't out of character nor is it throwing away Crow's character arc. It would have if Mara hadn't changed, but she has. And while I myself love storylines where victims don't need to forgive their abusers and can exert their wrath upon them as they wish, the fact of the matter is that how such a situation needs to be dealt with varies immensely on a person-to-person basis, which the writing team has already proven they're capable of understanding. Just look at Calus's and Caiatl's relationship! That ended with no reconcilliation because Calus simply refused to change, while Mara has spent the past year trying to get Crow to feel comfortable with her as an equal in conversations and open up to him more and trying to break her habit of watching him like a hawk- aka, acting like an actual sister rather than the pseudo-mother figure she'd picked up from Osanna. Ofc Crow the softie is going to respond to that, esp. since he's got a psychic connection to her via Awoken Twin Magic and seems to have been walking Uldren's memories as of late. He just genuinely is really fucking bad at holding a grudge.

(And while its easy to go 'oh the writing is lazy and rushed', I also think its kinda sus that Riven specifically talks about the human wish to reconnect with family right after the Sov sibling talk happens. It wouldn't surprise me if she picked up on Mara's desire to reconnect with her brother and pushed Crow towards forgiving her. It seems like she's been trying to pull Uldren's memories to the forefront everytime she talks with him and that could be a big factor as to why he's been reflecting on them a lot recently)

to elaborate more on why i think exile is a case of non-sexual grooming, it’s bc it hits all the fucking beats. c!tommy was carefully selected as a victim. c!dream targeted him after a long period of observation and planning to get away with manipulating him. c!dream integrated himself into c!tommy's life before the manipulation began, and he made himself a trustworthy figure to the adults around him. he used that to isolate c!tommy in various ways, and positioned himself as the only person c!tommy could rely on, conditioning him into a dependence, as he desensitised c!tommy to the purpose he had in mind for him- namely, being an obedient ally- gradually through escalating emotional abuse he positioned as normal. he broke c!tommy's self esteem down and then used kindness to make him feel special and appreciated to get him to aid in his Very Illegal Plans. and like, grooming a kid to do a terrorism is absolutely grooming like it’s legally something you can be charged with. c!dream didn’t want c!tommy as an ally to tend to his fucking garden or whatever he was going to manipulate and abuse him into committing crimes.

like, genuinely, the tactics c!dream used to manipulate c!tommy are textbook grooming tactics, and grooming isn’t suddenly okay if you’re doing it for a non-sexual purpose. and i don’t think shying away from the word does any good, because it's important to shine lights on less common and well known forms of abuse! while it’s becoming more well known non-sexual grooming (especially for free labour and criminal acts- both of which were what happened to c!tommy) is a thing that exists, as well as grooming of older teenagers and vulnerable adults, it’s still not talked about very much, and i think that using plain and frank terms around it even in fictional contexts does far more good than tiptoeing around the issue and refusing to acknowledge that most abuse tactics are much more flexible and broadly defined than we'd like to think (because it means we can ignore our own trauma, or trauma we inflicted on others).

AGAIN, ENGLISH MAY BE MY FIRST LANGUAGE BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IM GOOD AT IT(AGAIN, JUST MAKE THIS CLEAR, I AM INDEED A NO SABO KID🥴)

over time, you and miguel had.. unexpectedly started to bond more and more, which surprised a lot of spiders. the two of you were both equally closed off, but even then miguel had interacted with more spider people than you had. since your arrival, miguel had been the only spider person you had interacted with due to your mistrust.

most of the spiders had decided to simply not acknowledge your new friendship with miguel..simply because miguel had scared them off for you.

with you and miguel forming a new bond, he started to notice something about you..

while you enjoyed all types of cooking and baking, you never really ate much. miguel had chosen not to acknowledge it because he thought you just had a smaller appetite than most spiders, and he also thought his judgement was just clouded due to the fact that he had to eat more than most spiders did.

maybe your portions just looked small because of his size? he glazed over the thought, but it didn't make much sense, he ignored until..

your eating habits became worse, he had now come to the realization when he decided to treat you to a hamburger and you only ate a couple of fries..days later he noticed that when you had cooked something for the rest of the spiders, you hadn't plated any food for yourself. he felt a heavy pang in his heart, he knew the signs, because he would often neglet his humger needs due to his work.

when he brought up his concern that you were not giving yourself food you simply pulled out your cards, flipping to a card that said "no" and another that said "hungry". (A/N-i refuse to believe that reader would have "not" on their card bc "no" is way more conventional so pls dont come at more for this)

miguel heavily sighed, if course he didn't believe you, he could see the fear and sadness in your eyes. when he saw that look, he knew he had to do something.

a couple days had passed and you had stopped cooking and baking all together. you were simply just sitting on a couch that was placed in the HQ living quarters for everyone to use when suddenly you saw a large figure in your peripheral vision. you instantly knew that it was miguel. (A/N: MANS LITERALLY WEARS HIS SUIT EVERYWHERE OK?😭)

once he was in front of you, you decided to look up to him, furrowing your eyebrows to indicate your confusion. he wore an expression that you still were not used to identifying.

sympathy.

he pinched the brige of his nose, this was going to be harder than he thought, "we have to talk, mijo".

you pulled out your phone, getting your acc app ready incase if you need to respond to whatever he was about to announce. trying to do so calmly, as to not make him worry.

you gave him a nod, as to let him know that you were listening. he moved in order to sit next to you on the couch, his weight making a significant shift on the cushions.

"i need you to look at me alright? you don't even have to give me eye contact" he didn't want to pressure you, because he knew how much stress eye contact gave you at times.

you looked in his direction and tilted your body towards him.

he took another deep breath in and out before saying, "i noticed that you've been.. eating less, i mean, eating less than you usually eat.." he trailed off, he had to think carefully about his next words.

as soon as he said this, you looked away with a pained expression on your face.

he touched your cheek, and you flinched at the movement. "hey, none of that alright? i just want to make sure that everything is fine, mijo. has there been something on your mind recently?" he removed his hand from your cheek, wanting you to be able to fully process everything.

you let out a sigh and clicked one of the words you had preset on your app. "family" the robot voice spoke.

miguel nodded, although he hadn't seen everything that had happened he knew that overall, it wasnt the best situation. there was a pause before the robot voice began to speak again.

"food. bad" miguel's heart broke, and his strong stature had softened. he wanted to hug you, but he wasn't sure if he was overstepping your boundaries.

he carefully thought over his words before speaking, "never let anyone ever tell you that good is bad for you, alright mijo? it gives you strength, and helps you live" he looked right at you, making sure you digested every word he had said. he could see you blinking tears away, but they just continued flowing.

abruptly, you began to hug him. miguel was caught by surprise at this, as you buried your head into his chest. he awkwardly patted you on the back.

"from now on, i'll help you out" he stated. he felt you nod your head in agreement, head still buried in his chest.

from then on miguel made sure to coach you during mealtimes, giving you praise when you started to eat normal portions. (a/n hes channeling his inner sport mom vibes🥰). with miguels help, you started to feel more comfortable treating yourself to small treats, and even eating infront of people without caring what they thought about you.

at this moment you realized that, miguel might be your true family.

There is not NEARLY enough appreciation for how pivotal it was for El to be able to stand her ground against brenner multiple times while he was using all of his fucked up manipulation tactics and constantly triggering her past trauma.

And then, like the queen she is, el actively chose to not forgive him and say she understood him just bc he was dying. All she said was “goodbye, papa.” Acknowledging their relationship for what it has been, and refusing to let him guilt her into putting up with his abuse anymore. That was SUCH a powerful scene and we should talk abt it more bc as someone who’s been abused, I actually CRIED I was so proud of her.

So TIRED of everyone only focusing on the Mike part of El’s s4 arc, she was so fucking amazing this season and finally found her independence from the manipulative, and in brenner’s case ABUSIVE, men in her life. I love Mike but this ain’t abt him anymore. I’m done with El’s arc being abt him in any way.

(Omg yay a rare question:3 no one ever acknowledges 30 year old Toby! Kinda sucks bc I think his story as he grows up is so cool! Like man literally gets possessed and almost dies or dies depending on how you look at it. Anyway onto the hcs. There’s gonna be some canon stuff mixed in too :3)

🪓 After being taken in by Slender at 17, and continuing to kill people for most of his life, he’s become so desensitized to danger and violence

🪓 I mean he got mixed in with killers and criminals at 17 and solidified his space within them by 25

🪓 But Toby is full of himself. Cocky. Obnoxious. Cold. He thinks he’s untouchable due to his strength, being good at fighting and his CIPA.

🪓So when he flies too close to the sun and gets caught and taken into an asylum at 30, it’s almost like he doesn’t believe it. This isn’t really happening to him is it?

🪓So when he gets strapped down to a table like an animal and put in a straight jacket, it still doesn’t make sense to him. He’s untouchable.

🪓 Since the people who work at this asylum don’t really see him as human or care, they experiment on him

🪓They play in his body and mind like a playground

🪓They took one of his eyes out without putting him to sleep. He can’t feel it anyway right?

🪓 The treatment is brutal. The treatment is cruel. It takes what little sanity he had left.

🪓 Not because it hurts, obviously, but because it reminds him of that helpless feeling of abuse

🪓 He was a man now. Not a 17 year old being abused by his dad. So why was he in this helpless position?

🪓 Was all that killing he did to get stronger and to feel more powerful for nothing? Was he always meant to be controlled and abused by other people?

🪓 This is the point Slenderman helps him get out. Toby is an even more perfect puppet now.

🪓 Toby tries to let go of anything connecting him to his humanity. He believes it made him weaker.

🪓 Gets more brutal with his killing

🪓 Almost like a wounded animal lashing out, because he is. His pride is hurt. And ironically, his heart is hurt

🪓 Being in that asylum really brought back memories of his dad and how he’s one of the reasons he’s in this fucked up position in his life in the first place

🪓He’s even more pissed that he has one eye now

🪓 Everyone makes fun of him for it causing more violent episodes

🪓 Doesn’t want to be seen as weak or less than. So he uses violence to assert himself. He’s more insecure than ever about it now

🪓 He won’t be under anyone or be bullied by anyone ever again. Or be beneath anyone ever again.

🪓 Still has a sliver of empathy. In his own way, still doesn’t want to be like his dad

🪓 Refuses to trust anyone except for the people closest to him

🪓Assumes most people want to hurt him or take advantage of him

🪓 His whole life is miserable. Why is he even here?

🪓 Has tried to kill himself multiple times, but Slenderman has “blessed” him with immortality. Lucky him.

🪓 Part of him wants to stop and try and get better but he knows he probably can’t. So he delves even deeper into the violence. He’s miserable.

🪓Any healing and progress he’s made through his relationships romantic or not is completely gone.

🪓 He’s colder, crueler and meaner than ever

🪓Not because he hates the people he cares about, but he’s doing it to protect himself in his mind. He’s just terrified of loosing them or being hurt. Or his worst fear, hurting them. Especially if it’s a romantic partner.

🪓 “It’s a waste of your fucking time, trying to care about me. We both know there’s no hope for me” He tells them as he glares with the one eye he has left. And he means every word.

🪓 Pushes everyone away from him. He can’t handle the thought of his progress and the people he cares about being ripped away from him.

🪓”God, someone help me” he often thinks to himself. But he knows no one’s coming. He knows no one can save him. Despite how bad he wants it.

🪓So he’ll “help” himself. More killing. More violence. More bloodshed. More sex. More everything. Just to have control over something. Anything.

tangentially i think that is something that makes the turn towards portraying bruce as a more physically and verbally abusive figure so hysterical too. someone who values control to the point of (1) refusing to allow himself to willingly kill even the most despicable villain; and (2) suppressing his emotional turmoil and keeping it from anyone and everyone who may care about him bc he fears burdening them, is for some reason interpreted by writers as someone who would suddenly forget that control when it comes to matters with his children. all it does is reinforce how the problem behind portrayals of bruce as an abuser not only lie in white machismo but also in the constant devaluation of bruce's relationships with his children and the resistance to acknowledging those relationships as real bc they're not related to him biologically

Nothing was ever good enough for him. No matter how hard you tried to predict his wants and needs, he found something to make you feel inadequate. And yet when he was kind to you, he knew all the right things to say. He had a power of you - one of which you were somewhat aware, but refused to acknowledge - to make you feel like both the most special person, or the lowest, most unworthy of love depending on his mood.

You’d distanced yourself from most of your friends since starting the relationship, becoming dependent on this man for so much of your needs that it was difficult to let him go. Today, you were being punished for whatever minuscule infraction you had apparently committed against him. Overwhelmed with self-loathing and loneliness, you sought out comfort the only way you knew how: in the warm Terrasen sun.

Finding a lush green meadow, your legs gave out under you from the relief. You laid down among the wildflowers and closed your eyes, basking in the sunshine as you felt like you could breathe for the first time in weeks. The further you relaxed, however, the more your doubts and tangle of emotions swirled in your mind. Tears threatened to spill as you struggled to keep your thoughts from spiraling, when a shadow crossed over your face, blocking the sun from view.

Opening your eyes, you saw Gavriel standing over you with a soft smile that did little to hid the concern in his eyes. “Hey, Gav,” you whispered up at him through a sniffle. “Hi, angel,” he replied in that soft, deep voice as he sat down with you in the grass.

You watched him as he picked a small flower, twirling the stem in his hand before tucking it in your hair. You smiled at that, for the first time in what felt like forever, and took Gavriel’s hand in yours as you absentmindedly studied his features - the broad, calloused hand you were holding, his tanned skin and golden hair, his kind eyes that were studying you just as you were him.

“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked so gently, so purely without judgment, that for the first time in months you felt as though you did want to talk to someone. It was difficult at first as you explained your tumultuous relationship with another man - feeling silly evening mentioning someone like that in someone as incredible as Gavriel’s presence - but once you began talking, the words poured out of you.

Gavriel listened patiently, letting you nervously fidget with his hand as you spoke - showing no judgment, only the brief flash of anger in his eyes when you spoke of how you had been treated. After you were spent from sharing everything that had happened, you looked to Gavriel nervously, awaiting what he had to say. He simply took your hand that was holding his and lifted your knuckles to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss.

Looking into your eyes with an intensity that made your stomach flip, Gavriel spoke with a contagious sureness in his voice. “You deserve better than that. I am sorry that I allowed him to keep you away from your friends and those who truly love you for so long, but I will be by your side to help you see how incredible you are - how beautiful, and kind, and loved.” Your eyes welled with happy tears, heart swelling as you listened to Gavriel’s words - the affirmations that you had not heard in so long, and needed so desperately.

Standing up from the grass and wiping off his pants, Gavriel reached out his hands to yours. “Come on, let’s go inside,” he said as he hauled you up, keeping a hand on your lower back as he led to the castle.

You went in through the servants’ entrance to the kitchens, in need of water after all the talking and crying. Expecting the space to be empty, you jumped when you heard a gruff voice ask, “who do we need to kill?” You turned to see Lorcan and Rowan lounging at a table, Lorcan sharpening his sword as Rowan’s eyes bored into you, assessing your puffy eyes and flushed cheeks.

You laughed, “no one. It’s just a stupid male.” Aelin flitted into the kitchen, sitting in Rowan’s lap as she grabbed the apple he was eating out of his hand. “That would be all of them,” she said, earning a warning growl from Rowan that she returned with a wink and a kiss to his cheek.

Gavriel handed you a glass of water, returning to his protective stance with his hand on your hip as he asked if you needed food or anything else. You noted Lorcan’s gaze as he looked up from sharpening his blade, his eyes settling on where Gavriel’s hand rested - a subtle smirk forming on his lips before he returned his attention to his sword. Lorcan sighed, standing up as he appreciated his handiwork, light glinting off his blade. “Rowan’s offer still stands, just give us the name,” Lorcan winked at you, making a show of flipping the sword in his hand before holstering it in his belt. He nodded at Rowan and Aelin, the couple taking the hint to leave with him as they cleared out of the kitchen, leaving you alone with Gavriel once more.

You sighed, turning around to face Gavriel so that you were sandwiched between the kitchen counter and his massive frame. You craned your neck up to look at his face, instantly comforted by his mere presence. Sighing you dropped your head against Gavriel’s chest. “What do I do, Gav?” You felt two warm hands cup your face, gently tilting your head to look at him. “You rely on me, on the cadre, on Aelin, and those who love you. I will not let that male - or anyone else - treat you poorly, ever again,” he swore with that same contagious sureness from before.

You melted into the comfort of his touch, gazing into Gavriel’s tawny eyes for a long moment before a feeling washed over you. Unlike anything you had experienced before, the world suddenly tilted, pushing you towards Gavriel. You felt like a golden thread was pulling you into him as you gasped, searching his face as you struggled to remain tethered to reality.

Acting on impulse, you reached up and pulled Gavriel down towards you, your lips less than an inch from his as you took in his wild expression. Gavriel closed the gap, his warm lips kissing you with a reverence, a passion unlike anything you had felt before. You pulled away from him, staring in awe as you fumbled for words. “You, you’re-“

“I’m your mate, angel,” Gavriel whispered with a nod, and you felt a sense of peace that made every challenge you had been through in your life worth it, because it led you here.

now, about the double edged blade…..

as previously established, Uther is a fucking dick and wants his children to obey him but also adore him. with this behavior, the Pendragon siblings react in two ways: with anger & contempt or submission and remorse

way #1

i’m gonna start with Morgana because anger is the easiest to pick out throughout the show. in the first episode of the first season, our introduction to Morgana’s character is her lecturing Uther about executing the man Merlin witnessed upon entering Camelot (such a warm welcome for Emrys, mh?)

MORGANA I just don't think chopping someone's head off is cause for a celebration. That poor mother. UTHER It was simple justice for what he'd done. MORGANA To whom? He practiced some magic, he didn't hurt anyone. UTHER You were not around twenty years ago, you have no idea what it was like. MORGANA How long are you going to keep punishing people for what happened then?

early on, it is easy to pick up on Morgana’s resentment and anger at Uther, who she believes is blinded by his fear of magic and his need for control (which she isn’t wrong about). also, we find that she isn’t one to back off when poking the bear (Uther). she does it constantly in seasons 1 & 2

MORGANA (1x03 Mark of Nimueh) Why would she kneel on a cold stone floor morning after morning when she could make these things happen with a snap of her fingers? Like an idle king!

MORGANA (1x08 The Beginning of the End) How can this child be your enemy? He's just a boy. UTHER He is a Druid. MORGANA Is that such a crime?…What have these people done to you? Why are you so full of hate?

UTHER (2x04 Lancelot and Guinevere) How many men would you have me sacrifice to save a servant? MORGANA As many as it takes!

to be honest, i wouldn’t be surprised if screaming, arguing and berating Uther about his morals and ethics is her way of proving that she is not weak or submissive to his actions. i mean, Morgana grew up in a household the complete opposite from her time in Camelot. Gorlois, the man whom Morgana considers to be her father and one and only family member, was said to be “just” and “kind” and someone that Uther even considered a good friend who openly kept him in check. Morgana, until the age of ten, understood parental love and empathy unlike Arthur, who spent his whole life without any good or healthy substance of it.

the culture of Camelot and Uther’s wrath is not something Morgana was ever able to fully acclimate to as Uther himself pointed out in 1x12. She “was at odds with [him] since the beginning” and could never picture herself as a Pendragon (point further proven in 4x05: she looked revolted when Queen Annis compared her to Uther) because she didn’t share in their idea of magic = evil and a king = absolute control.

ironic in terms of future plot events, isn’t it :’)

compare that to Arthur: man’s respressed af. keeps all his emotions under lock and key if they are anything but haughty and serious. y’all, Arthur even says it himself how he “[can't] disagree with Father [Uther] in public.” whenever Arthur finds himself at odds with Uther, he holds his tongue and waits until he can disobey secretly (2x05 when he leaves to rescue Gwen, 1x08 when he helps Morgana sneak out Mordred in the dark of the night, 2x08 when he sneaks out to meet Morgause for more info about his mom, etc). it is only the rare moments when Arthur feels impassioned enough to speak up without fearing any retribution does Arthur talk back at him (so satisfying 👌)

ARTHUR (1x03 Mark of Nimueh) [Morgana’s] right, Father. You hear the word magic, you no longer listen.

ARTHUR (2x08 Sins of the Father) This is what fuels your hatred for those who practice magic. Rather than blame yourself for what you did, you blame them….You hunted her kind like animals! How many hundreds have you condemned to death to ease your guilt?!….You speak of honour and nobility! You're nothing but a hypocrite and a liar!

ARTHUR (3x10 Queen of Hearts) You can't forbid my feelings any more than I can. I won't deny them any longer, I love her. I love Guinevere.

we can even compare how the two react to Uther’s violence towards them

on the left, you see Arthur’s face right when Uther crushes the morteus flower needed to heal Merlin (his manservant/friend/????) and on the right, is Morgana after Uther discovers she was harboring a Druid child in her chambers and she refuses to listen to his reason.

notice how both faces are remarkably similar 👀

however, Arthur’s look of shock and dismay come from his hope that Uther would do the right thing. that he would help save Merlin’s life from dying of poison. that he wouldn’t use this as a method to teach Arthur “what it means to disobey and cross the king.” he truly did hope, just like he always does with the people he holds close. Arthur cannot help but hope and trust that those close to him will not betray him and yet so many do. hence the remorse

looking at Morgana, her shock comes from the fact that this might be the first time Uther reacted to her words and actions in a physical manner. my suspicion is that most of the time, all Morgana previously got was Uther reprimanding her and yelling at her to stop questioning his methods (bc, let’s be real, she was the favorite child.) never has he lifted a finder on her like Arthur and i have proof (cue transcript!)

AND! and, Arthur is constantly warning Morgana about not angering Uther any further because of the consequences she might face (consequences this boy is very familiar with) when Uther deems it necessary to “teach” his children obedience.

UTHER (1x04 The Poisoned Chalice) You have to learn there's a right and a wrong way of doing things. I'll see you're let out in a week. Then you can find yourself another servant.

UTHER (3x10 Queen of Hearts) You have caused this to happen, Arthur. My decision is final [...] This is for your own good. - UTHER She will die. The enchantment will be broken. You'll see I was right.

UTHER (2x08 Sins of the Father) I am protecting you from your own foolishness!

so educational 🥰 but see, because Uther presents his punishments as lessons, Arthur himself views them as just a fucked up but meaningful way of his father’s concern because “yeah, I am the first born son and only heir to the throne. of course I need to learn not to do silly things like disobey, talk back to him, be my own person.” <- I’m paraphrasing here

Arthur does and has never seen a way out of the life thrust upon him by Uther (see 3x06). succeeding Uther as king, marrying a noblewoman of high standing for heirs and alliance strength was always expected of him. Arthur never saw a way out of this. even when he and Gwen were in their secret relationship phase, Arthur had to remind himself that this would never last. he loved her and knew she loved him, but there was always that reminder (that sounded a lot like Uther) in the back of his head telling him that it would never last so long as he was prince. he had a duty (constructed by Uther) to serve Camelot and going against his father would mean (in his eyes) that he is going against Camelot (as Uther always presented it to be).

so unlike Morgana, he did not kick and scream but stood firm because that was what he believed was stronger. if he stayed in his lane and did his part, then he would be a good king, maybe even a better one than his father, for Camelot. however, the show proves that differentiating himself from Uther actually made him the better king and more respected, but this is not the meta for that. I am getting side tracked.

OK: so we’ve established parental issues between the two siblings. now onto their very complex, complicated yet beloved dynamic

sO, as i mentioned in this post (because i am lazy and too tired to copy/paste the evidence from there), these siblings do care for one another. they just go about it in the most hilarious and repressed and in-denial way (hilarious to me 😤)

when we meet them, it’s established that these two have known each other for some time. enough for them to bicker and have banter, you know, as you do with a Pendragon. also, should add, neither character are ever aware they are blood-related until s3 (because of some weak-ass bitch named Uther), so you have that very, uh, interesting subplot in s1 that everybody forgets about until you rewatch it. (honestly, I have so many questions. number 1: why???? number 2: it’s only in s1—was it scrapped??? is it like it never existed???? what was its purpose to the plot??? bbc explain yourself—)

however, despite how much it is shown that they do care for one another, they’re relationship in s1 is still undefined and vague as if they also don’t know how to accurately define what the other means to them. it’s very similar to the whole “i really love this person so much but is what i’m feeling platonic, familial, or romantic?” because….you know, guy and girl besties who are close are typically expected to grow romantic feelings for each other, so tbh i would not be surprised if both mistook their love as romantically inclined in the beginning bc, reminder, neither of them were aware they were siblings until much later.

[and this is ALL i am saying on this subplot. i do not want to cause any negative discourse, so if anyone has a few choice words about it, either keep it to yourself or feel free to talk about it with people you know. personally? not a fan of the ship and never will be, but i am not here to post about that.]

Morgana is very aware of Arthur’s trusting nature. Arthur is very aware of Morgana’s empathy and righteous nature. they understand each other so well which is why Morgana knew just how to harm Arthur in later seasons and why Morgana’s betrayal hit Arthur so hard. it’s also why he never stopped trying to reach out to her in s4 & s5. as @merlinemrys said in this lovely post, the show’s driving force is love. love of all kinds. whatever conflict it is, love is there at the center of it all and, in Arthur and Morgana’s case, it does not save them (just like how love does not save Merlin or Arthur from what lies ahead, as the op of the post pointed out).

that is what makes their relationship/love be like a double edged sword!! that is why they are edges of the same blade!!! they protect and fight for what they believe in and for the people they love, but the same blades cut deep and twist their wounds into a lasting scar.

it is because of Arthur’s love for Morgana that he cannot help but hope and mourn the woman he once knew. it is because of Morgana’s love for Arthur that her feelings of hatred are so strong and ugly.

like honestly,

look at them T^T compared to before

their relationship is so tragic T^T because we knew them before it all went wrong. we knew they cared and understood each other. we knew that for some time, they only had each other to rely on for a friend, a crutch, a breather for when the royal life was too much. both of them were fighters and strive to honor their values. both of them had once leaned on the other for support, had wanted nothing but happiness for each other.

fuck, they didn’t even get the chance to really be siblings because they found out too late, and by then Morgana was on a war path and Arthur only found out at the last minute.
